Existing stars and ‘A Star Is Born’ factor into 91st Oscars
For any and all aspects the 91st Oscars may have, the event also is being defined by what it won’t have.
For instance, Kevin Hart as host.
And a “popular movie” Oscar that was postponed after a major outcry.
And a running time that overshoots the scheduled three hours ... though that remains to be seen.
The film industry’s top celebration has lurched toward its ABC air date Sunday, Feb. 24, when it again will be broadcast from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. Once more, the independent-film world and movies backed by streaming services play significant roles – but there’s still room for such blockbusters as “Black Panther” and the latest “A Star Is Born.”
Content to be a spectator this time is filmmaker Jennifer Todd (“Jason Bourne,” the “Austin Powers” movies), who produced the past two Oscar shows with Michael De Luca. “Doing it for two years is a lot,” Todd confirms, “but I love the show, and I’m sure the people in charge (producer Donna Gigliotti and co-producer and director Glenn Weiss) will do a great job.”
Two years ago, the Oscars famously ended with the wrong movie announced as best picture (“La La Land,” when “Moonlight” actually won), and Todd says she now thinks about that moment “ not that often. ”Obviously, it was weird when it happened, but then I also did the (Oscar show) after that. It’s the beauty of a live show, and I’m happy it wasn’t my fault! At least I did nothing terrible to destroy the Oscars.“

I definitely am. I can get ahead of a lot of things because of the experience that I had the previous season. I do the math, so now I know it’s going to be 12 little movies if somebody makes that decision (to renew the series).
I know how to ask for what equipment I want, how to troubleshoot actors’ schedules and how to enable ever ybody on the cast and crew to work at the highest frequency they can in

the least amount of time, so that we can all go home at the end of the day
What makes you able to deal with so much at once?
My script super visor will say, “I’d like to speak to Pamela the actor now.” And my first assistant director will come up to me and say, “I’d like to speak to Pamela the director now.”
There’s a danger of doing all the jobs so that you can be doing too much, so I know how to say, “Let’s sidebar that.” That’s one of my superpowers. You have to get to it, but there’s a time and place for ever ything, and you can’t juggle too much at one time.
Your daughters Odessa (“Fam”) and Gideon (“The Mustang”) now have their own acting careers. Are you happy about that?
I love it when my kids have a purpose and a place to be. They’re working, and my other daughter is in high school.
I don’t believe in being one of those parents who says, “I want my kid to act.” They’re 21 and 18, and they can do whatever they want, but I just want them to be confident and healthy and to feel secure. And to allow themselves the space to fail and to keep going.

‘FBI’ is expanding to hunt the ‘Most Wanted’
Q: I’ve heard that there’s going to be a spinoff of “FBI” already. Is that true? – Jeff Phillips, via e-mail
A: It’s all but cer tain, though a pilot has to be made first – and that will happen as an episode of CBS’ parent “FBI” show before that series ends its current freshman season. That might seem a little fast, but with the Missy Peregrym-starring “FBI” being so successful in its first year executive producer Dick Wolf made no secret early on that he wanted to build out the franchise (as with his NBC “Chicago” shows) if that happened. The spinof f will be called “FBI: Most Wanted,” named for agents go by in pursuing the criminals they most want to capture. CBS already has made a series commitment to it, so if the network ultimately decides not to go with it, that would be a huge payday for Wolf. In other words, expect to see it next season.

A: As of the time this was written, the finale of the award-winning NBC drama’s Season 3 was set to air on April 2. That’s pushed back a bit from the originally scheduled date, since the recent cancellation and rebooking of the State of the Union Address wrought mayhem – to put it mildly – on the broadcast networks’ Tuesday schedules over several weeks. With many shows, especially serialized ones like ‘This Is Us,“ it was thought safer to stick with repeats until things settled down.

A feast for the eyes: 10 foodie movies you can stream right now
Dinner and a movie: It’s one of the great American pastimes, right up there with shopping, posting to social media and wandering into traffic while staring at your cellphone.
But what if you can’t afford dinner? Or a movie? Or both? Or maybe you just don’t feel like going out? Well, perhaps dinner in a movie is the answer And if you happen to subscribe to a streaming service such as Netflix or Amazon, you’ll find a number of films revolving around food, restaurants and eating to sate whatever your appetite needs. Because nothing satisfies like watching other people eat a delicious meal on a flatscreen.
“Julie & Julia” (2009, Netflix): Nora Ephron directed this drama that stars Amy Adams as a food blogger who endeavors to prepare all 524 recipes from “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” by Julia Child (Meryl Streep in an Oscar-nominated turn) in the course of a year
“Big Night” (1996, Amazon/Starz): On Amazon’s Starz channel is this superb drama about two brothers (Stanley Tucci, Tony Shalhoub) trying to save their failing 1950s New Jersey restaurant by preparing a sumptuous Italian feast for crooner Louis Prima. Minnie Driver, Isabella Rossellini and Marc Anthony are also in the talented cast.
“Burnt” (2015, Netflix): A chef (Bradley Cooper) who destroyed his Michelin-starred career with drugs and prima donna behavior seeks redemption by taking the helm of a top London eatery in this fine comedy/drama from director John Wells (“August: Osage County”).
“Tortilla Soup” (2001, Amazon): Hector Elizondo (“Last Man Standing”) does typically solid work as a Mexican-American chef who continues to prepare elaborate meals for family and friends despite having lost his senses of taste and smell following his wife’s death.
“Jiro Dreams of Sushi” (2011, Netflix): This outstanding documentary profiles 85-year-old sushi master Jiro Ono, owner of the three-Michelinstarred Toyko restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro, and his relationship with his son and heir Takashi.
“Eating: A Very Serious Comedy about Women & Food” (1993, Amazon): From French filmmaker Henry Jaglom comes this arthouse favorite that explores food and life through a birthday party for three women turning 30, 40 and 50. Nelly Alard, Mary Crosby and Frances Bergen star
“The Founder” (2016, Netflix): The story of Ray Croc, who turned two brothers’ innovative burger operation into the fast-food giant McDonald’s, is told in this solid biographical drama that stars Michael Keaton as Croc.
“The Hundred-Foot Journey” (2014, Netflix): Helen Mirren was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance as the owner of a Michelin-starred French eatery whose hackles are raised when an Indian restaurant opens across the street.
“East Side Sushi” (2014, Amazon): A sushi chef (Diana Elizabeth Torres) is rejected for a job at a Japanese restaurant because of her Mexican heritage and gender in this underrated indie drama.
