Austin Dillon looks for ward to his ‘chess match’ at Daytona

Austin Dillon will be the first to tell you that winning last year’s Daytona 500 was the highlight of his season, if not his career.

The trouble is, the 28-year-old North Carolina native and driver of the No 3 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing couldn’t maintain that level of success into the rest of the 2018 Monster Energy Cup season, ringing up only seven more top-10 finishes, one more top-five and no wins in the ensuing 35 races. Winning at Daytona got him to the postseason but he wasn’t much of a factor there, getting eliminated in the Round of 16 to finish 13th in the final Cup standings.

Now Dillon is rested, relaxed and smarter for his struggles as he and 39 other series drivers gear up for the 2019 Daytona 500, the Cup Series season-opener that airs from Daytona International Speedway Sunday, Feb. 17, on Fox.

“It’s a long race and you know guys are coming off of the winter break,” explains Dillon, the grandson of team owner Richard Childress, “ever ybody’s pumped up to go out there and compete hard. So people are being aggressive early on and you’ve got to be smart.

“It’s a chess match,” he continues. “It’s really like playing chess at 200 miles per hour. Daytona is one of those places that sometimes things can go outside of your control and you’ll be caught up in something that you weren’t really a part of And you just have to

have a little bit of luck but also put yourself in a smart position.”

In last year’s race, Dillon benefited from a little of both. He managed to sidestep three massive wrecks that eliminated many of the strongest cars in the field to come from one lap back of the lead with 20 to go and wind up directly behind leader Aric Almirola. As Almirola tried to block him in the last lap of overtime, Dillon tagged his rear bumper and sent him spinning into the wall, thus enabling Dillon to speed past for the victor y.

And he did it in Dale Earnhardt’s No 3 Chevy, 20 years after Earnhardt’s first and only victor y in the 500 and 17 years to the day the NASCAR legend was killed in a last lap wreck on the North Florida tri-oval.

“ The No 3 car has always been historically famous at Daytona,” Dillon says, “and there’s everything that Dale Earnhardt was able to accomplish. And when he won 20 years ago from when we won, it was really cool ... to go back to Victor y Lane with the No. 3. There’s so much histor y at Daytona and the No. 3 car has so much histor y, it was very special.”

“I mean, that’s a championship race right there,” he continues, “and not many races where they say after wards ‘champion.’ So you know it’s the Super Bowl of our sport and to cross the checkered flag, it just felt so good to bring it back to all of our employees at RCR and my grandfather, my family It just felt good.”

Celebs who cook: Talented on screen and in the kitchen

We’ve all heard the term “ starving artist,” but clearly that doesn’t apply to these folks – at least not now.

Many actors and musicians have waited tables in New York or Los Angeles until they got their big break, some have even cooked professionally and still others have gotten training. And it’s a skill they’ve used since, either by writing a cookbook, hosting a cooking show or just preparing meals for their friends and families. Their love of the culinary arts is plainly front and center

Take, for instance, Emmy Rossum of “Shameless,” airing Sundays on Showtime. She’s a regular viewer of cooking shows, has taken classes at Le Cordon Bleu and admits to being somewhat of an experimenter in the kitchen. Not a fan of baking, she prefers cooking because it doesn’t require so much precision and it allows her to be what she calls a “creative mess. ”

Trisha Yearwood, by contrast, has had no formal training but is clearly an accomplished chef The award-winning singer and wife of fellow country artist Garth Brooks evidences a passion for hearty fare on her Food Network series “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen,” and in her two cookbooks “Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen” and “Home Cooking With Trisha Yearwood.”

Valerie Bertinelli of “Valerie’s Home Cooking” is another Food Network personality whose skills came by doing. She learned to cook as a child at the side of her grandmother and aunt, watching them roll out gnocchi and cappelletti, and the lessons stuck. A cooking series and several cookbooks later, it’s fair to say the Golden Globe-

winning “One Day at a Time” actress has found herself a second career.

On the lighter side foodwise is Gwyneth Paltrow The Academy Award-winning “Shakespeare in Love” actress is a dyed-in-the-wool home chef, author of a number of food-related books and cookbooks and an advocate for healthy eating. She also runs the lifestyle website Goop.com, which touches on food issues.

Another Oscar winner with chops in the kitchen is Emma Stone, for whom food prep is a passion as well as therapy The “La La Land” actress turned to baking to manage her anxiety growing up and it turned into something more. She’s even talked about opening her own bakery one day Kris Jenner of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” fame came to her love of the culinary arts by necessity. A wife and a mother at a young age, she needed to pick up skills to feed her family and herself That led her to go to cooking school and eventually write the cookbook “In the Kitchen With Kris.”

Music icon Elvis Presley was not a performer known for doing things halfway, and this joyous two-hour tribute to the singer — who died at age 42 in 1977 — takes its inspiration from one of Presley’s biggest TV triumphs: his 1968 comeback special. A diverse and stellar lineup of artists recreates the musical program from that legendary presentation.
