‘Meaning of Life’ could mean another Grammy for Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson has one Grammy nomination this year, and to her, it’s the one that really counts.
Now a coach on “ The Voice,” the first “American Idol” is up for best pop vocal album for “Meaning of Life” at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, which someone else with a “Voice” connection –Alicia Keys – will host from Los Angeles’ Staples Center in a live-across-the-country CBS broadcast Sunday, Feb. 10.
“ When I started making this album, this literally was my goal,” friendly three-time Grammy winner Clarkson admits of her current bid. “I love dancing, but I don’t do lots of choreography or pyrotechnics, so my (live) show is about musicianship and about the singer. Whenever I make an album, I want it to be really solid vocally, so it’s always my favorite thing when I get nominated for it.
“I know most artists want album of the year or record of the year,” adds Clarkson, “and those are awesome and really incredible, but it’s always amazing to get a vocal nomination when you’re really striving for it. So much has been going on, I forgot when it was even being announced, but I’m very excited about it.”
Others up for the best pop vocal album Grammy include Camila Cabello (for “Camila”), Ariana Grande (“Sweetener”), Shawn Mendes’ (for his eponymous “Shawn Mendes”), Pink (“Beautiful
Trauma”) and Taylor Swift (“Reputation”). Clarkson is encouraging appreciation of everyone in the categor y – and, for that matter, the entire event – no matter who wins.
“It’s hard to compare me and Shawn Mendes, or me and Kendrick Lamar,” she reflects. “I think people get into this competitive thing that says, ‘ This person’s better because they won.’ Well ... no. I’ve been in the same categor y with the Beatles and Bonnie Raitt before and won, so it has nothing to do with who’s best. It just happens to be that the moment is that person’s moment, for whatever reason. ”
Married mom Clarkson is anticipating potentially her busiest year yet: Her Meaning of Life Tour launched recently and continues through March; her third season on NBC’s “ The Voice” starts later this month; she’s in the voice cast of this May’s animated movie “UglyDolls”; and her syndicated weekday talk show debuts this fall.
“We took the longest vacation I’ve taken in a very long time for Christmas and Ne w Year’s,” Clarkson says, “and my family and I were all talking about how huge 2018 was. Then my husband and I started going over the schedule for 2019, and I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I think 2019 might kick 2018’s a... !’ It’s a big year, and a lot of goals are being accomplished, which is really cool.”

At this point of “Manifest,” how do you view your character Michaela?
She’s a bit of a tragic character because she keeps tr ying and she keeps messing up, but her relationships are ever ything to her I don’t know what she would do without her brother or the love that was there with (her ex-fiance) Jared, so it’s fun to explore that.
What do you think about Michaela’s relationships revealing so many different sides of her?

The great thing is that a lot of these relationships are so awesome of f-camera as well, it’s such a safe space to explore the depth of each of them. With Josh (Dallas, who plays her brother Ben), he and I have become like brother and sister, so that dynamic is there. And with J.R. (Mar tinez, who por trays Jared), we’ve gotten really close, so for that friendship to translate on-screen as well is great.
And with Victoria (Car tagena), who plays Lourdes (Michaela’s former best friend who’s now Jared’s wife), she’s just down-to-ear th and game for anything. She’s been a blast to play with.
Do you enjoy the range of emotions that “Manifest” gives you to play?
Oh, totally! We all joked when the show first star ted that if these characters existed in real life, they’d all be in the psych ward. You don’t go through something like this and come out normal, so with what Michaela is experiencing on the screen, it’s the simplest version of what really and truly happens.
You can’t be blubbering your way through ever y single episode, but these moments get the best of her, for sure. We see that with Ben, too, with his struggle with his family and tr ying to do the right thing there. Both characters meet their breaking points ever y once in a while.

Cooking and banter fill the air on ‘Just Eats With Chef JJ’
Chef JJ Johnson believes that the recipe for a successful dinner party is equal parts stimulating conversation and great food, which he endeavors to convey in a new series airing on CLEO TV
In each episode of “Just Eats With Chef JJ,” airing Saturdays on the newly launched cablenet, the New York-based chef and restaurateur hosts a dinner party for family and friends at his hip, trendy loft in the Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem, preparing dishes from his restaurants and personal collection, serving cocktails and wines and just conversing with those hanging out in his kitchen.
Think of it as a hipper, more intimate and urban version of “The Chew.”
“There’s no television show out there like it,” Johnson says. “... We’re having these amazing conversations about everyday life, things that are going on in the guests’ careers. And then there are some issues that they just want to talk about. In one episode, we talk about the Women’s March and what it has meant to the world. We talk about relationships. We talk about religion. We talk about education and we truly have these great conversations. And what I’m showing is that food is the narrative of the best conversations you’ll ever have or the best moments. ”
More a talk show than a how-to, the series does offer up food info as Johnson prepares dishes such as a chipotle barbecue shrimp, a collard green salad, a lobster pot and his childhood chicken parmesan, and he directs viewers who want to know more
about them to recipes on his website. There are also segments on mixology and wine selection.
“I’ve been able to bring a sommelier on,” Johnson says. “There’s an episode where we drink some Turley from Sonoma Valley, which is my favorite red. We drink some Italian white. We do have a really nice wine selection. We drink some Japanese whiskeys on the episode. So just try and have some educational moments with food and alcohol to make sure everybody can swag up their kitchen.”
Guests appearing include rappers Yandy Smith and David Banner, actors Laz Alonso (“Fast & Furious”) and Naturi Naughton (“Power”), and former NBA star Stephen Jackson, all of whom eat, drink and are merry in Johnson’s kitchen.
“I hope people come away with that they can go home in their kitchen and do exactly what we’re doing,” Johnson says. “Invite their friends over, download some of these recipes, pour a glass of wine, have a great time and some amazing conversation.”
