The CW’s superheroes unite in the crossover saga “Crisis on Infinite Ear ths,” which star ts Sunday on “Supergirl.”

The CW’s superheroes unite again to face a ‘Crisis’

The CW ’s annual superhero-show crossover events always gather familiar faces, but this year’s includes some blasts from the past.

Past incarnations of Clark Kent and/or Superman – those played by Tom Welling on the series “Smallville” and Brandon Routh (more recently The Atom on “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow”) in the 2006 movie “Superman Returns” – appear in “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” an adaptation of a DC Comics series that starts on “Supergirl” Sunday, Dec. 8, then continues that week on “Batwoman” (Monday) and “ The Flash” (Tuesday). The saga concludes Tuesday, Jan. 14, with episodes of “Arrow” and “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.”

Advancing elements of last year’s crossover, “Elseworlds,” the stor y keeps alternate universes integral to the plot ... also indicated by corresponding Lois Lanes for the multiple Supermen. Elizabeth Tulloch returns as The Daily Planet’s ace reporter to “Supergirl” guest Tyler Hoechlin’s Man of Steel, and Erica Durance comes back as Lois to Welling’s Clark Kent.

The crossover gave Routh a sense of completion to the Superman chapter of his career “After finishing that film, I thought I would be doing at least one more, so saying goodbye to the character had not been something that was in my mind,” the pleasant actor reflects. “ That has caused some emotional ups and downs for me since then, so this process has been really healing

for me. And also, I think it will be validating for some fans. So many people come up to me and say, ‘I don’t care what anybody says. I love ”Superman Returns“!”’

Though Durance also has been a “Supergirl” guest star, she hasn’t played Lois since “Smallville” ended in 2011. She says it was “awesome” to reunite with Welling, reasoning that “it’s like seeing family again. We worked really well together, and we hadn’t seen each other for a long time, but it was like we hadn’t missed a beat.

“Now we’re parents and we’ve got little kids,” adds Durance, “and we talked about how neither of us sleeps very much anymore. And Lois Lane is a great character.”

Among others back in their DC guises for “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” Ashley Scott again takes on her “Birds of Prey” role as Helena Kyle (alias The Huntress), and Johnathon Schaech continues his “Legends of Tomorrow” portrayal of Jonah Hex. Also, Cress Williams brings his Black Lightning character from his own CW show into the supersized superhero fest.

Durance confirms that being amid a plethora of costumed heroes and heroines was something special. “ There were so many of us, we didn’t all necessarily get to connect,” she reports, “but it’s neat to see how they’ve pulled it all together and created these shows that the fans enjoy.”

And my better half and I are not reality TV watchers but we became obsessed with ‘Below Deck.’ It’s inexplicably addictive and we got so caught up in ‘Below Deck: Mediterranean,’ which I highly recommend.

By now, you’re probably knee-deep in menu ideas for your holiday party At least, we hope so If not and you find yourself at a loss for what to make, look no further than Food Network and Cooking Channel for suggestions that will keep your guests clamoring for more and put your bash on everyone’s must-attend list for Decembers to come. If that’s what you really want.

An excellent place to start would be Sunday, Dec. 8, on Food Network as “Barefoot Contessa: Cook Like a Pro” finds host Ina Garten sharing recipes and pro tips for a seasonal brunch, including a shakshuka with feta cheese, smoked salmon tartines with gravlax sauce and a fresh fruit platter, all washed down with a spicy bloody mary. Sweet and savory.

Immediately following is “Giada’s Holiday Handbook,” in which Giada De Laurentiis invites her cousins to bring appetizers for a Christmas party and the results are sumptuous and eclectic: a pomegranate glazed pork, braised escarole with olives and raisins, baked penne with squash and goat cheese and a colorful cherry and cranberry cobbler

Earlier that day, Molly Yeh is celebrating Chrismukkah on “Girl Meets Farm,” and that means down-home comestibles including chicken and apples, a brussels sprouts salad with cranberries and dijon dressing and pistachio linzer Christmas cookies with tahini hot chocolate – because those Minnesota winters can be awfully cold.

Jumping ahead to the morning of Saturday, Dec. 14, it’s “The Pioneer Woman” and host Ree Drummond, who is hard at work making hearty foods that warm the insides and are cooked in one

Then on “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen,” Trisha Yearwood goes to Nashville to meet with a friend and gather ingredients for a warm, comforting meal consisting of a tea-poached pear and goat cheese galette, mushroom and butternut squash risotto, a flavorful spice-rubbed roast chicken and for dessert, dark chocolate chai cookies. Ribeiro has been hosting for only for five seasons, however. When the show premiered in 1989, “Full House” sitcom star Bob Saget was at the helm, later followed by a brief tenure with co-hosts John Fugelsang and Daisy Fuentes. Tom Bergeron, Ribeiro’s immediate predecessor, began a 15-season stint as host in 2001.

When she isn’t working as an editor at a book publishing company, Maggie (Emily Rose) amuses herself by playing matchmaker for her friends, but she’s thrown for a loop when her old college boyfriend Jaxson (Corey Sevier) shows up at her office as a recently signed author. He immediately catches the appreciative eye of Maggie’s boss, Amanda (Melanie Nelson), so it’s clear to Maggie she’d better figure out how she feels about Jaxson sooner rather than later in this 2019 holiday romance.

Many of the voice-cast members of the 2016 “Trolls” movie reprise their roles in this sequel of sorts. Poppy — voiced again by Anna Kendrick — becomes determined to restore holidays to her world, and specifically to the Bergens, who don’t have them. Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse also return vocally. A number of the other creative talents who worked on the movie are back for this effort as well.
