‘Nutcracker’ builds on tradition

Annual

Sadler Arts holiday performance seen as gift to community

Tradition begets tradition and among the top recurring holiday themes for many families is watching a performance of Peter Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite.”

The story centers on Clara, a young girl played by Mabry Duncan, who receives a nutcracker as a Christmas gift. In a dream, the nutcracker comes to life as a prince, who takes her to a magical city where they are entertained by a variety of magical characters.

Ronia Davison, principal at Sadler Arts Academy, said the institution’s annual “Nutcracker” performance has indeed become a local tradition.

“We always see it as our gift to the community, which is so tremendous in supporting our students,” she said. “This does a lot for our students, but we like to think of it as our gift back to the community.”

She has been with Sadler Arts Academy for 22 years with the annual holiday performance of the Nutcracker entering its 21st year. Davison said the

performance and all that goes into putting it on, from hours of rehearsals to choreography, music, sets and costumes, plays a part in the school’s curriculum.

“We love building and honoring tradition,” she said. For the students, their participation “is a beautiful memory in their hearts” they will likely look back on for years to come.

Davison said the hours of planning and all other aspects that go into the production result in a payoff for both students and the attending public.

The murals of Muskogee

Splashes of color help tell the community’s past, present and future

The murals of Muskogee add a quality of life aspect to the community through splashes of color with a purpose.

Muskogee area artist Becky Lucht said the city’s several murals help the community share its story.

“I love murals and think they’re a magnificent addition to the community,” she said. Lucht added she would like to see more mural projects in Muskogee in the future.

“They add a sense of place and history and can help tell the story of where we came from,” Lucht said. “They’re like a mission statement for the community.”

One of the artists involved in creating a couple of Muskogee murals, Lance Hunter, said murals can become an attraction for a city while spurring on development.

“I have seen outdoor murals become a catalyst for revitalization in downtown areas, a source of civic pride, historical awareness and a visual oasis for many people in their travels through a region,” Hunter said. “Several cities like Lompoc, California, and Toppenish, Washington, have encouraged the creation of outdoor murals as a premier attraction for tourism.”

The Head Start building at Sixth and Denison streets had a large mural painted in 2005 by Lance Hunter, then an associate professor of art at Northeastern Oklahoma State University. The mural, titled “Our Future,” measures 24 feet by 35 feet.

It depicts youngsters dressed as

a future physician, musician, scholar and emergency services worker/ firefighter.

Hunter and student artists also were responsible for the mural on the side of the Gaddy Drug Store building, 1126 W. Broadway.

From an artistic standpoint, he said murals present a different set of creative challenges for an artist.

“A large mural has obvious challenges with scale which exceeds what most artists are familiar or comfortable with,” Hunter said.

“The quantity of paint, lightfastness concerns, physical and environmental challenges along with safety and liability considerations are issues many studio artists rarely face.”

If not done right, Hunter said an amateur exterior mural that is poorly designed and executed can quickly become an eyesore that often has aesthetic and longevity issues.

In October, Lucht attended an Oklahoma Art Conference where one of the presenters was from Philadelphia, a city hit hard by a number of economic setbacks. The city’s art community has joined together there to provide groups and family units with a type of 5-footby-5-foot panels of a material called parachute cloth which can be painted inside under controlled conditions and then applied to the sides of buildings in a series of panels linked together to form a larger mural.

“It has been a very healing project for the community there,” Lucht said. “They’ve made murals

throughout the city a tool for building community unity.”

Parachute cloth is an inexpensive silk replacement material coated to form a strong but lightweight surface. It is an ideal fabric for art designers crafting photo-shoot screens, event display banners and stage backdrops, said supplier Chicago Canvas.

Among the advantages of that type of application is that the exterior surface the panels will be applied to do not have to be in good shape. In Muskogee, an example of an aging mural falling into disrepair is one called the “Postcard Mural” in the 200 block of Broadway.

It was one of the larger undertakings that came on the local arts scene in 2001 when the Muskogee Area Arts Council com missioned Palmer Studios to spruce up the looks of the Square Deal Music & Sound building.

After the tear-down of an adjacent building, the exterior wall serving as the

west side of Square Deal looked “barren and grisly,” according to published reports at the time. Dr. Bob Palmer, who is an artist and former professor at University of Central Oklahoma, and his students painted this set of 11 historic scenes on the building’s original plaster, depicting aspects of Muskogee history.

The “Postcard Mural” is located at 212 W. Broadway with individual vignettes showing the city’s history.

Palmer also is responsible for the large wild horses mural off the 200 block of North Main Street.

Other samples of outdoor art can be seen on the west side of the Roxy Theater with a depiction of the Broadway play “Oklahoma!” and on the garage on the alley behind a residence at 1004 W. Okmulgee Ave, where a likeness of a large dog tagged with a “Superman” dog tag stands watch.

Arts Academy,” she said. “A lot of planning goes into it before it ever hits the stage.”

Davison said work on the production is something the entire Sadler staff and students buy into each year.

“We normally sell out all three shows with packed houses for all performances,” she said.

In some years, an extra night time performance has been added to meet demand from the community.

Sadler staffer Beverly Dorn said there will be a 7:30 p.m. performance Saturday; a 3 p.m. show on Sunday; and a 6:30 p.m. performance on Monday. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $10 for reserved seats.

However, Dorn said the reserved seats for Saturday’s performance were sold out.

“Tickets are going fast,” Dorn said. “It really is a tradition, so if people want tickets they should get them early.”

Tickets can be reserved by stopping by the Sadler Arts Academy office at 800

Altamont St.

Melissa Curtis is directing the performance for the eighth year and said while the “Nutcracker Suite” is an annual production, each year is different.

“We like to change things up some every year,” Curtis said.

Part of the process for Sadler students is going through the audition process.

“Everything here at Sadler starts with a great book, so there is background exposure of getting the kids to understand what we’re creating on stage,” she said. “Obviously, any time children work in a cooperative setting to put something together that has an artistic root, their brains grow so much throughout the entire endeavor.”

She said nearly every student in the school above the kindergarten and first-grade level who wants to participate has that opportunity.

“It has a very meaningful purpose here for all of us,” Davison said. “It’s always inspirational to see how the community supports us.”

Murrell Home hosts open house

Mansion features period architecture decorated anew for holiday season

A holiday tradition of touring the decorated antebellum George Murrell Home is one many eastern Oklahoma residents look forward to each Christmas.

The Hunter’s Home Open House is set for 1-4 p.m. Sunday. The family-friendly event is free to the public.

The mansion has come to be known for its period architecture and ever-expanding interior furnishings, which in themselves tell stories of history. But whatever the season, none are quite as beautiful as the home dressed in its Victorian Christmas finery.

Open House has been going on for several years, and Frazee said they have had quite a few special guests.

“St. Nicholas has shown up a few times. We’ve had traveling musicians regale us with 19th-century songs, and, of course, our mainstays who play piano and sing Christmas carols with everyone. We’ve even had traveling friends put on their 19th-century best to spend the holidays with us,” said Frazee.

She said the food is fabulous every year. Staff and volunteers supply the recipes.

The Christmas Open House at the George Murrell Home will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday and it is free and open to the public.

Every year, a few new decorations are added, a variety of refreshments are served to visitors, and the home gleams with happy memories and visitors admiring the mansion that was once a fine hunting lodge and agricultural plantation.

“Our Christmas Open House this year will show our expanded decorations of the house,” said Jennifer Frazee, cultural interpreter.

Not only will visitors be able to tour the home all decked out in Victorian holiday splendor, they will also be able to tour the general store. Warm refreshments will be available for any who wish to tour the grounds and would like to come in to warm up by the fire.

“We will decorate the general store again, a little differently than last year, and, as always, the decorations in the house change from year to year,” she said.

“We encourage everyone to come out and sample some tasty treats while mingling with staff and volunteers to learn about the history of the place, as well as any new happenings,” Frazee said.

“Some of the yummy treats we have had are the fabulous date bars, as well as delicious cornmeal cookies,” she said. “You wouldn’t think the ingredients to cornbread could be made to compete in deliciousness with chocolate chip cookies, but our Friends of the Murrell Home members have managed it. We have also had sugar plums. Last year, we were able to serve visitors boiled peanuts as a treat when they came to the general store to warm up by the fire.”

As a college student, Frazee began volunteering at the historic home, and now she looks every forward to her job a cultural interpreter every day.

“I love working at the Murrell Home because the history is fascinating and the place has a way of getting under one’s skin and working into a person’s heart,” said Frazee. “It is great to stand in the doorway of a room and imagine the people who have lived here moving about as they carry out their daily tasks.”

She said Hunter’s Home Open House is a wonderful time to work at the home, because they get to share that passion and wonder of another time with the visitors.

“Of course, it’s always wonderful to meet people as visitors and have them leave as friends,” she said. “Many people who come to spend time with us during this event really enjoy the decorations, the food, and the festive air. Even if they’ve toured the house several times throughout the year, they find something extra-special about it in the holiday season.”

Frazee said volunteers are always welcome to join the fun, as the site offers events year-round.

“Our upcoming events are May Day, so everyone should get ready for that. We will begin the planning for that in the middle of January, so if anyone would like to volunteer or get involved, they only need to email us.” Frazee said.

Stefani makes her first TV special ‘Feel Like Christmas’

W hether it’s making a record or designing clothing, Gwen Stefani has an implicit trust in the creative process. And it’s what guided her through the at-time daunting challenge of making of her first solo special for NBC, “Gwen Stefani’s You Make It Feel Like Christmas.”

“You have to start at the bottom of the mountain,” she explains, “and just (take) little baby steps, and it started just coming together. And it was really just coming down to ‘Who am I and what am I trying to say?’ And it just was like developing over time and it was like meeting after meeting of what I don’t want to do and what I do want to do. And ‘What is the message I’m trying to make?’ And those kinds of things.

“And then it just turns into a budget issue just like everything else,” she adds with a laugh, “so that kind of edits things out. And then you try to get really creative within a budget problem, which is what I do with designing as well, which is part of the creative process. And you start to get really creative then.”

The hourlong program, which airs Tuesday, Dec. 12, sees the Grammywinning singer/songwriter and former coach on the Peacock Network’s “The Voice,” performing selections from her new album “You Make It Feel Like Christmas” as well as classic holiday fare. There are also holidaythemed sketches and guest appearances by Ken Jeong (“Dr. Ken”), talk-show host Chelsea Handler, actor/

comedian Seth MacFarlane and recording artist Ne-Yo. Stefani also performs a duet with Blake Shelton, the country artist to whom recent reports have linked her romantically, and it’s a song he wrote for her Christmas album.

“I guess when he started hearing about the kind of record I was going to make,” Stefani explains, “he was so excited about it. And he was on his tour bus and he came up with this idea. And he was funny because he sent me a voice message and it was like, ‘OK, I was thinking about your record and I was just sitting around. I kind of came up with this. I don’t know if there’s anything here.’ But it was basically like, ‘I wanna thank ...’ ... ‘You make me feel ...’ I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! What a jerk!’ Like he’s

Jane Levy will be the first to admit she knew very little about the Johnny Carson-era “Tonight Show” before she began filming her new Hulu dramedy “There’s ... Johnny!”

And that’s not surprising, considering the former “Suburgatory” and “Don’t Breathe” actress was born only three years before Carson’s 1992 farewell.

“You know, all these late-night talk shows I grew up with,” the native Californian says, “I didn’t know that that whole style was invented by somebody named Johnny Carson. ... Johnny was so good at being present and commanding a room and a show and getting performances out of comedians. Needless to say, it was a world I didn’t know about because I’m in my mid-20s.”

Created by frequent Carson guest Paul Reiser, the half-hour series goes behind the scenes of the NBC late-night show circa 1972 to follow the coming-of-age story of Andy (Ian Nelson), an innocent Nebraskan who shows up at the show’s offices seeking a job.

He strikes up an immediate rapport with Joy (Levy), an assistant talent coordinator trying to live down the fact that her father got her the job while fending off the sexual innuendos coming from the writers room.

“She just is a really full, rounded woman character,” Levy says, “who I thought would be a lot of fun to play and have like a really good time enjoying her complexities of being really smart

so talented. He just sends me a hit like right when I’m trying to write this record. So I knew automatically that it was so good ... .”

Stefani also gets to perform in comedy skits, something at which she has limited experience. Though she’s happy with her performance, she’d just as soon stick to recording, touring and designing and leave the acting to the professionals.

“It was really unexpected, something I never thought I would do in my lifetime,” she says of the Christmas special, “but really up my alley, like everything I love. So it was really fun to sit down and be creative and figure out a way to do it where it works for me creatively and represents my point of view and things that I love. So it was a really fun project.”

and really capable and good at her job but also really privileged and kind of spoiled but hard-working but entitled. I just related to her anger and confusion and passion, and there was a lot to sink my teeth into as an actor.”

Bastianich meets veterans who turned farming in

‘Lidia Celebrates America:

Homegrown Heroes’

With the holiday season in full swing, Lidia Bastianich comes forth with a tribute to our troops that’s as uplifting as any conventional Christmas special.

In “Lidia Celebrates America: Homegrown Heroes,” airing Friday, Dec. 15, on PBS (check local listings), the chef, author and self-styled “food ambassador” travels across the country to places such as California, Kentucky, South Carolina, West Virginia and upstate New York to meet military veterans who have turned to farming after returning from active duty to help them assimilate back into civilian life.

“One of the things that was amazing that came out in each one of them,” Bastianich explains, “was the fact that they said, ‘You know, we were in two, three, four deployments and we saw a lot of death and we saw a lot of destruction. And when we were there, that was our duty and we did it with all our heart, giving all of ourselves. But I’m interested now to see things regrow, the birth of new things.’

“So it was amazing how these young men and women returning home, they feel comfortable returning … literally to the land, to the dirt, and make it happen.”

Each of the eight men and women profiled have their own unique challenges, be they emotional trauma, battle scars or physical limitations. With the help of the Farmer Veteran Coalition, they were able to get up and running in areas such as growing food, beekeeping, raising livestock and maple sugaring.

And as it turns out, many of the skills and traits developed through military training – hard physical labor, teamwork, perseverance, seeing a mission through to its conclusion no matter how difficult – also apply to farming. Combined with the fact that farming also gives a sense of purpose to people who often exit the military without one, and it’s easy to see that this is an ideal marriage.

“They still give and in a sense nurture these people that they protected,” Bastianich says of the veteran farmers, “and now they’re back here home and they’re still nurturing. They still have that need to take care of somebody.”

“There’s no greater purpose than growing food to feed another person.”

What book are you currently reading?

“It’s an old book … ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover.’ … One of my friends gave it to me. … So I just began on that one.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“I was in Kansas City at Lidia’s Kansas City and we did a dinner for my latest book. ... And so we did a whole dinner from my book … and one of the offerings was a turkey breast … and I did it with an apricot sauce. So I had a little bit of sliced turkey with apricot sauce and I had acorn squash and I had some salad, a nice Caesar salad with kale.”

What is your next project?

“I’m actually writing a memoir and the memoir is coming out in May, I think. ... It’s all finished, so it’s in the actual last editing.”

When was your last vacation, where and why?

“My last vacation, I was in Italy, actually. … I was with my family in Cividale del Friuli in Northern Italy. We have a home and a winery there ... and a little B&B and a little restaurant, so I have a lot of fun. The kids come and we cook and we have fun.”

With the holidays nearly upon us, Fox gets into the spirit of the season with a pair of specials on Thursday.

Taraji P. Henson hosts “Taraji’s White Hot

Holidays” Thursday

Dropping Friday, this six-part docudrama examines the lengths to which people will go to find the truth through a man’s 60-year quest to find out the details behind the mysterious death of his father, a Cold War military scientist involved in a secret biological warfare program. Directed by Errol Morris (“Gates of Heaven,” “The Thin Blue Line”), the series stars Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Blake Nelson and Molly Parker.

Up first on the night of Dec. 14 is “Taraji’s White Hot Holidays,” in which Taraji P. Henson hosts an hour of comedy and holiday music performed by recording artists such as Chaka Khan, Ciara, Faith Evans, Fergie, Jussie Smollett, Leslie Odom Jr., SaltN-Pepa, and the Ying Yang twins. There will also be guest appearances by DJ Khaled, Taye Diggs, Jay Pharoah Method Man, Tituss Burgess and Niecy Nash, plus a few surprises.

It’s the third straight year the “Empire” actress has fronted the special and the first where she says she’s happy with the balance of music and comedy.

“I wanted it to be more like a ‘Sonny & Cher’ or a ‘Carol Burnett,’ ” Henson says, “where it was more about the comedy sketches with some music. Because if you put a lot of music on a variety show like that, then it just looks like another music show. So I wanted it to be very clear that this is a comedy sketch variety show, so we finally got it three years later.”

Henson’s favorite sketch of the evening is one that combines both forms called “Prancer-ton,” which she explains is “totally a rip-off of ‘Hamilton’ ... and it’s about the feud between Prancer and Rudolph because Prancer thinks she can lead the sled. And so we do this whole big number very a la ‘Hamilton’ ... that is really funny. We have Leslie Odom Jr. starring in it

Stand-up comics Dan Perlman and Kevin Iso are the creative forces behind this new series in which they star as Dan and Kevin, two introverts whose jobs — as a public school teacher and a restaurant delivery man, respectively — force them to climb out of their heads and relate to those around them in their gritty neighborhood in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, N.Y.

and we have Jay Pharoah, me playing Santa and Tituss Burgess as Rudolph, so it’s really funny and actually it’s a phenomenal number, very Broadway-esque.”

Immediately following is a special Christmas edition of “Showtime at the Apollo,” hosted by Steve Harvey from the legendary Harlem, N.Y., venue, where musical acts such as Snoop Dogg, Boyz II Men, DMX and Fifth Harmony will take to the stage to perform renditions of their favorite holiday classics.

There will also be the amateur talent competition featuring musicians, stand-up comedians and other acts, all performing before the audience at the Apollo, renowned as one of the most brutally honest and vocal in the entertainment industry. So don’t expect any Christmas

warm-and-fuzzies to extend to this portion of the hour.

“When you come up here to do the Apollo,” explains Harvey, who launched his career here in the early ‘90s, “especially for the amateur competition, you don’t have to worry about the (holiday) theme. You need to come up here with your A-game, your best act, your best song, your best trick –something, set yourself on fire, do something that’ll hold their attention.”

“You know, people like to see success come from everyday people,” he continues, “and when a person comes out here and does it big at the Apollo, it’s really a heartwarming thing. And then at the same time, when you don’t make it, we kind of like that, too. That’s what the Apollo is.”

“The Grand Tour: Season 2,” www.amazon.com/gp/ video/detail/B0731XBJBV

The second season of this comedy/talk series follows hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May as they continue their trek around the world, visiting locations such as Mozambique, Croatia, Spain, Switzerland, Colorado and New York, to drive amazing cars, have unusual adventures and continue their ongoing argument as to whom is the biggest idiot.

Anthony and Thunder searching for winning formula

Call it a divorce that has been beneficial for at least one party. The jury is still out on the other.

When the New York Knicks finally traded Carmelo Anthony to the Oklahoma City Thunder in September after months of acrimony between him and former Knicks President Phil Jackson, it brought mercifully to a close a disappointing seven-season run that saw New York make the playoffs only three times and Anthony unfairly taking much of the blame for the team’s lackluster performance.

And while the Knicks appear to have prospered from the parting of ways with their All-Star forward in the season’s first month, boasting a winning record behind the play of young star Kristaps Porzingis, Melo and the Thunder at this writing have struggled to gel, with star point guard Russell Westbrook seeming too deferential to Anthony and the team’s other prized offseason acquisition, former Indiana Pacers All-Star forward Paul George. The result has been a team out of synch and nine Oklahoma City losses in its first 16 games.

For his part, Melo has played reasonably well, especially for a 33-year-old, 15-season veteran with a sore back and knees, averaging 20.1 points and 6.1 rebounds in 32.1 minutes per game, not too far off his career averages of 24.7, 6.6 and 36.1. And he seems to enjoy playing for the appreciative fans in Oklahoma City.

As the Miami Heat proved with LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, great players will eventually figure things out, come together and dominate as they did in making the NBA Finals four times and winning two league titles from 201014.

The Thunder and their fans hope their “Big Three” are good for at least one championship.

PBS’ ‘Inspiring Woman’ shares stories of success and perseverance

With stories of sexual harassment in the worlds of politics, entertainment and sports front and center in the news these days, a web series about female empowerment is well-timed. And that’s where “American Masters” comes in.

In “Inspiring Woman,” which recently began streaming on the PBS series’ online platform, six innovators share their stories of success and explain how they’ve disrupted and changed their respective industries.

The six-episode series is a part of “American Masters”’ yearlong campaign InspiringWomanPBS, based on themes central to the lives of poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou and playwright Lorraine Hansberry, both of whom have been profiled by the broadcast series (Hansberry’s story airs next month), and it comes courtesy of a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

“We decided in conjunction with CPB,” explains “Masters” executive producer Michael Kanter, “that it was really important that we expand our web presence. And we were already doing that but we came up with, among other things, podcasts and I guess it could be called crowd source but where we ask our audience to submit their own stories about inspiring women. And the webisodes ... were a sort of premiere part of that.”

“But of course in anything we do in public television, finding diversity is key,” adds supervising producer Kait Hoehne, “not just racial diversity per se but also diversity of talent and diversity geographically and what have you.”

In the 5-6 minute webisodes, viewers are introduced to Tracy Clayton, a writer and co-host of the BuzzFeed podcast “Another Round”; Angie Mar, owner and executive chef at New York’s The Beatrice Inn; Sara Chipps, JavaScript developer and co-founder of Girl Develop It, which teaches women to be web and software developers; Molly Soda, a web-cam performance artist; Rakia Reynolds, founder of the multimedia agency Skai Blue Media; and Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, visual artist and creator of a street-art series that addresses gender-based street harassment.

The stories of Clayton, Mar and Chipps are currently streaming with ensuing webisodes dropping every two weeks into early January.

“You can talk to someone who is an entrepreneur and started their own company in PR and you can talk to a chef and they’ve all jumped over a lot of the same hurdles,” Hoehne says, “and they all kind of have this same attitude of positivity and resilience that I found really encouraging and amazing. ...”

“I just want women who may be tuning into our material for the first time to see themselves in what we’re putting out.”

“American Masters”’ executive producer Michael Kanter Answers: 1) Walt Disney
2) Davy Crockett
3) False. It was named after the Roman god of the underworld.
4) Mickey Mouse
5) Goofy
6) M-I-C-K-E-Y M-OU-S-E!
