Keith Urban appears on “NBC’s New Year’s Eve” Monday
Carson Daly and Keith Urban share NBC’s New Year’s Eve duties
This year, NBC’s New Year’s Eve party returns Carson Daly to the festivities – and it also involves Nashville substantially, thanks largely to Keith Urban.
Recently named entertainer of the year at the CMA Awards, Urban will appear from the countr y-music capital’s Bicentennial State Park during the celebration Monday, Dec. 31. However, much of the program – one hour in primetime, then another surrounding the midnight ball drop – still will originate from New York’s Times Square, where “ The Voice,” “Today” and “Last Call’s” Daly will be joined by Chrissy Teigen and “Saturday Night Live’s” Leslie Jones. Diana Ross, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend (Teigen’s husband), Blake Shelton and Andy Grammer also will supply songs.
Urban has been elsewhere on the dial on New Year’s Eve before, and he says,
“It’s a long-term plan. I love bringing in the new year in our town, and Nashville needs that singular, big New Year’s Eve show. We’re just going to keep building it, year upon year, if we get the chance.
“My drive is to have people all around the world see Nashville as a destination for New Year’s Eve,” Urban adds. “Everyone instinctively thinks, ‘ The ball drop is in New York, so that’s where we gonna go,’ but Nashville has grown in leaps and bounds. And what an incredible destination for people to come to and bring in the new year.”
Daly took last New Year’s Eve off, and he notes that with only one other exception, “I think I’ve been (on TV for it) every year since 1998. That started with MTV, when their studios were right there in Times Square. Last year was lovely because I was with my wife and my family at home, which was a nice change, but it was almost weird. I felt a magnetic pull to Times Square. I was almost itching.”
Last month’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was the coldest on record, and Daly has sampled just about every outdoor condition possible on New Year’s Eve. He maintains he’s ready again.
“I’ve been out there for some recordbreaking cold temperatures,” he recalls. “I feel like this time, it’s going to be unseasonably warm, and maybe that’s just wishful thinking. It’s been a pretty mild December, so I’m really holding out. ”
Daly expects some warmth to be supplied by the “great group” he’ll be surrounded by: “Chrissy and I did the show together in part a couple of years ago John Legend has become a good friend, and he’ll be on ‘ The Voice’ for Season 16. We love Leslie, and I’m so grateful Keith has decided to go with us; the party he’ll host in Nashville will give us a not-so-New-York-centric feel for the show.”

This being the final season of “Gotham,” how do you think you’re going to feel when it’s time to say goodbye to Bruce Wayne for good? Have you processed it yet?
Not fully I don’t really want to. I’m a believer that ever ything happens for a reason and of course this era of my life will forever have changed me. I mean, I can see already it’s changed me in countless ways. I feel like anything that happens during my teenage years are some of my most formative years and my teenage years, the past five years, were spent on this show and I’m so grateful for this experience. I know that I’m going to miss it to death once it’s gone but at the same time I’m excited for what’s next.
But “Gotham” is always going to have a really, really special place with me because it showed me things, it’s exposed me to things, it’s taught me so much about life, about the business, about acting, about my craft, about other people. And like I said, I’m going to be forever grateful. I’m always going to miss it.
In playing such a dark and tortured character, can you put him away when they say “cut”?
It depends on the scene. I mean, I’m not Method in any way, shape or form. I usually tr y
possible. Because my philosophy, what I found works for me in acting is to kind of get in the space and feel what’s right.
But we have done some scenes – there’s a scene in Season 3 where I stab Alfred I probably could say that was the hardest scene I’ve ever done, it was so emotional. I distinctly remember that day It was hard for me to get out of it. I went up to my room and just star ted cr ying because of it, which never happens. I’m usually smiling and goofing of f right up until “action!” and as soon as they say, “cut!” it’s back to that again.

A: He was, since the film was released in 1987 and the NBC series ran until 1989. In fact, most of his hiatus periods from the show were filled with making movies and sometimes, he managed to do both at once, as with the original “Back to the Future.” Other Fox theatrical features from that period included “Teen Wolf,” “Light of Day,” “Bright Lights, Big City,” “Casualties of War” and the two “Back to the Future” sequels, which famously were filmed back-to-back.

Gordon Ramsay has seen it too many times. Restaurateurs become complacent and lazy and they stop paying attention to the competition. Often, cleanliness in the kitchen suffers and the food goes downhill. And if the business is family-run, there are likely morale issues as well, as no one wants to speak up for fear of ruffling feathers.
It’s a downward progression of events that usually ends with the eatery going under – and family relationships fractured.
“The first question I ask,” Ramsay says, “is: If this chef wasn ’ t your son or daughter, would you fire them? Immediately, yes they would. And if your mother wasn ’ t the manager, would you fire her? Yes, I immediately would. So they forget the importance of there’s no family when you run into that business. ... Yes, you can love and support one another but you need to make decisions.”
In Season 2 of “Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back,” which commences Wednesday, Jan. 2, on Fox, the chef, author and restaurateur comes to the aid of more eateries suffering from morale, management, food and/or cleanliness issues that threaten to force their closure, giving the place a makeover over the course of one full day that is designed to get the place back on its feet. This season, he works his brand of tough love on businesses in New Orleans, Kansas City and Connecticut, among other locales.
But to be able to properly identify the issues, Ramsay can ’ t go as Gordon Ramsay, so he’s walked into restaurants dressed as everything from a woman from a local charity event to a police officer to a baggage handler Hidden cameras capture the reactions of staff and customers when he unmasks himself
“Screaming, people standing up cheering, ‘holy s...!,’ ” he says. “And I’ll start peeling off my beard, my nose, my ears, my cap, and then they are f freaking out. ”
In the end for Ramsay, it’s all about getting the business – and in some cases the family – back on track.
“That’s the bit for me ...,” he says, “honestly handing those keys back over to those owners and seeing their faces, they’re asking to hug and they’re asking me to stay And 23 hours prior to that, I’m called (many profane names) and oh my God! So to get through that process is quite an extraordinary turnaround.”
“So that’s when I get happy,” he continues, “watching them fall back in love with their restaurant. They’ve been given this incredible, brand new fitout. The restaurant ’ s décor is in keeping with what it should be; it has an identity And then of course, it’s (been given a strong presence on) social media and we have local critics coming in.
“So they are back on the map.”

Alyssa Milano returns to host the seventh and final season of this fashion competition series, as 14 talented designers — all previous winners of “Project Runway” seasons around the world — vie to be named the world champion of the catwalk. The pool of contenders includes seven winners from the U.S. “Runway” and seven international designers from international editions of the show, from Australia, Brazil, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Canada. Isaac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman also return to join Mliano as judges.
