ecognized as one of the greatest screenwriters, Paddy Chayefsky gets a two-night tribute Classic Movies starting Wednesday Dec. 6, with one of his most famous works. “Martelevision play starring Rod Steiger before it became a 1955 film, with Ernest Borgnine role of a lonely Bronx butcher and winning an Oscar for performance that transfrom the bad-guy roles he largely had been playing. The movie also earned Acadebest picture, director (Delbert Mann) and Chayefsky’s adapted screenplay generally hangs out with his pals after work, but a visit to a dance hall introduces him to (Betsy Blair), and they take a real shine to each other but the critical comments buddies make him doubt pursuing a relationship with her The picture is alternately heartbreaking, but always affecting. “Leave the World Behind” is written and directed by “Mr Robot” am Esmail, who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter in Ocabout adapting the novel shortly after it was published during the COVID-19 pandemic. Esmail shared, “It was a crazy time, those early days [of the pandemic], and when I read the book what really resonated for me was this idea that in a moment of crisis, just how easily we could forget our common humanity.”

Stillman (“Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” 2020), Nick Krishnamurthy and Barack and Michelle Obama (“We the People”). Esmail also shared what it’s like to collaborate with the former president and first lady, saying, “They gave notes on everything from the disaster elements to the characters.” The director added, “It’s a highlight of my career that I got to work with the Obamas. They’re some of the most brilliant minds on the planet and I’m really grateful for their involvement.”

Christmas confections: ‘Elf on the Shelf ’ comes to life in new baking competition
There are all sorts of elves, but only some ented enough to make cookies for Santa. series puts confectioners to the test, as “ Shelf: Sweet Showdown” continues with airing Sundays on Food Network.
Hosted by Duff Goldman (“Holiday pionship”), this five-episode, Christmas-themed boasts chef Kardea Brown (“Delicious M and pastry chef Ashley Holt (“Bake Squad rounding out a team of Christmas-loving
“Santa and his loyal Scout Elves, along of legendary cake master Duff Goldman, lenge six teams of sweetmakers in a competition of surprises. Finally, the remaining three teams will square off in a super-sized season finale, just before the Scout Elves head back to the North Pole to help Santa prepare for his big night. The flight home is long and cold, but the Elves fly over some of their favorite places on Earth in the meantime, and the remaining bakers pay homage by “elf-ify”-ing a famous landmark in their honor.
After the final round of eliminations, one team — and their very special elf — will earn the ultimate Christmas gift: $25,000 and the title of The Ambassadors of Confectionery Concoctions.
Sugary sweet and full of Christmas magic, “The Elf on the Shelf: Sweet Showdown” airs an all-new episode Sunday, Dec. 3, on Food Network.

“Bullitt” (1968): If McQueen hadn’t already been legendar y for earlier films, this one would have done it for him. One of the truly iconic police thrillers, the drama casts him as a self-styled San Francisco police detective ... and involves him in one of the greatest car chases ever filmed.
Turner Classic Movies shows the picture overnight Tuesday, Dec. 5, into Wednesday, Dec. 6.
“The Reivers” (1969): McQueen tried something different with this adaptation of a William Faulkner stor y about a youngster’s (Mitch Vogel) coming of age during a road trip with a folksy handyman (McQueen).
“Papillon” (1973): Incarcerated on Devil’s Island, Henri “Papillon” Charriere McQueen) plots his escape in this compelling true stor y that also stars Dustin Hoffman as a fellow convict.
“The Towering Inferno” (1974): McQueen met the disaster genre in producer Ir win Allen spectacle that returned the actor to San Francisco, as a fire chief leading the charge against a blaze in the world’s tallest skyscraper.
“The Hunter” (1980): McQueen’s final film, based on experiences of true-life bounty hunter Ralph Thorson, offered lots of the star’s wr y humor amid the action sequences.
