Boulevard youth present

‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’

Community invited to rediscover meaning of Christmas, help donate to food pantry

A familiar story of a boy, a woebegone tree and the meaning of Christmas comes to Boulevard Christian Church this weekend.

So do holiday singers and a World War I flying ace dog.

Church youth will present “A Charlie Brown Christmas” at 7 p.m. Friday and Sunday.

The play is based on a television Christmas special that’s played each year since its 1965 debut. The show features characters from the “Peanuts” comic strip.

Director Kerry Huffer said the show is the top animation special of all time — and for good reason.

“The thing about Charlie Brown Christmas is they do tell The Christmas Story,” Huffer said. “Charlie Brown asks what Christmas is all about and Linus says, ‘I can tell you what Christmas is all about.’”

In the cartoon, Linus quotes the Bible story of Christ’s birth, found in the book of Luke.

Huffer said the story remains appealing because of “the childlike quality of the characters.”

ADMISSION: Free. Donations of canned or nonperishable food to Muskogee Community Pantry are encouraged.

These “childlike” characters have adult problems.

Brady Gallaway, who plays Charlie Brown, said his character is “just a depressed kid.”

“He’s in a lot of trouble because he thinks nobody likes him,” he said.

Gallaway said he had “key points” already memorized after watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas” so many years.

Meanwhile, DeNario Shoates didn’t have to memorize anything to play Snoopy.

“I do sheep noises, cow noises and laughter,” Shoates said, adding

Okie Holiday Showcase offers variety

Holiday, country, Red Dirt and traditonal all on the line-up

Holiday favorites, country, blues and a little Red Dirt are on tap Saturday at the Roxy Theater.

The Okie Holiday Showcase will be 7 p.m. Saturday.

Prducer Michael Anthamatten said the Showcase will feature holiday, country, Red Dirt and traditional music.

He said the Showcase features past and present performers with the Catch a Rising Star program. Anthematten, the Rising Star director, said budding musicians perform through the year, but Christmas is something special.

“The end of the year program is a chance for them to really celebrate and come together and do something different,” Anthamatten said. “And the holidays always are a great celebration. Throughout the year they put on so many different types of programs, doing different charitable programs. They get to go to Memphis and Nashville.”

The show also offers a reunion.

WHAT: Okie Holiday Showcase.

WHEN: 7 p.m. Saturday. WHERE: Roxy Theater, 220 W. Okmulgee Ave.

“All the youth come back for Christmas,” he said. “That’s when families get together and the youth come back from school. So, it is a reunion for them as well.”

Tulsa musician Dylan Whitney is among those slated to return.

He said people can expect high energy and excitement, even when he performs Christmas music.

“I try not to specialize myself,” Whitney said. “We play mostly blues, yes. But we also play country, rock, stuff like that ,as well, and gospel.”

Anthamatten said the Roxy Theater offered Whitney one of his early breaks.

“We discovered him playing in a Mexican restaurant in Okmulgee at 14,” Anthamatten said. “He said he wanted to make it a homecoming moment because that (the Roxy)

was his first stage.”

Singer-songwriter Jana Cox of Wilburton said people can expect a lot of different artists at the Holiday Showcase.

“Each person has their own thing,” she said. “One person will be singing more Red Dirt country. One person may be singing rock. It’s always unexpected.”

She said she plans to sing some traditional and newer Christmas songs.

“I’m going to be doing ‘O Holy Night’ and I’m going to do a song that’s not very well known. It’s called ‘Lamb of God,’” she said. “It’s a beautiful song. I wanted to do it because it’s not widely sung.”

Cox said she began singing at age 11 and has

performed with Oklahoma Kids. She later got involved with the Rising Stars program.

“And I ended up loving it,” she said. “I love the people. They are all so supportive of each other’s talents.”

that he also makes noises when Snoopy goes after the Red Baron.

Kayleigh Langley plays Lucy, who offers Charlie Brown “psychiatric help” then charges five cents.

“She’s snobby, obnoxious and full of herself,” Kayleigh said.

“She’s happy about other people when they screw up.”

Huffer said the church did “A Charlie Brown Christmas” a few years ago with adults.

“We had high school students who came out and auditioned for it this year, so that’s who we have,” Huffer said.

She said the church seeks to capture the essence of the cartoon.

For example, she said characters “move their arms around a lot.”

“When they walk

they kind of walk with a bounce,” she said. “When they turn, they all turn at the same time. That kind of adds to the charm.”

The show also includes the jazzy Christmas score, Huffer said.

Boulevard’s production goes longer than the original cartoon.

“‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ is only about 30 minutes long,” she said. “So we’re doing a few little scenes like Charlie Brown with Peppermint Patty and Charlie Brown with the Little Red Haired Girl, Snoopy and the Red Baron. Between those vignettes, we’ll have a couple of musical acts. We have a couple of guys playing a piano duo. We have the choir singing Christmas songs.”

Admission if free, but donations to the Community Pantry are welcome, Huffer said.

Snowflake Ice Rink open until Jan. 2

Visitors can make trip to Tahlequah to skate, shop and eat

Snowflakes may only float gracefully from the sky a few times this winter, but skaters can glide around the Snowflake Ice Rink in downtown Tahlequah under the Morgan Street Pavilion until next year: Sunday, Jan. 2, 2018.

Festive lights glow and laughter spikes the air as skaters slip and slide, and wobble and right themselves moving around the rink. It’s entertaining to watch skaters – some beginners, and others confident with experience skating backward, circling around other skaters, gliding expertly and spinning to a stop.

Children learn fast and parents often try to keep up, or patiently teach small children to balance and trust feet to stay in place. Couples hold hands, arms entwined, keeping warm and casting shy looks or gazing admiringly at each other. A string of children hold hands in hope of making a turn around the rink.

It’s affordable fun family and friends can have together, and a fabulous way to create holiday memories.

Some visitors make a day trip to Tahlequah to skate, shop and eat.

Couples can find the ice a good reason to hug in hopes of not slipping and sliding. Frank and Larkin Wofford enjoy a sunny day of skating at the Snowflake Ice Rink.

“It’s a good time! Because of its location, people can make more of a trip out of it, visit local shops, get coffee or a sandwich,” said Mercedes Goins, destinations marketing coordinator with Tour Tahlequah. “They can make a day out of it – enjoy time

From a tourism perspective, it’s a great draw of residents from surrounding Tahlequah – Hulbert, Fort Gibson and Stilwell – and that’s in addition to bringing together all the children in town

Fox’s holiday gift? A live-musical take on ‘A Christmas Story’

It still has the leg lamp, the “triple dog dare” and the caution that “You’ll shoot your eye out”: This holiday season, television is offering another version of “A Christmas Story.”

In addition to TBS’ and TNT’s traditional 24-hour marathon of the original, Jean Shepherd-inspired 1983 movie on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Fox is presenting “A Christmas Story Live!,” a production of the stage musical that the film inspired. Airing Sunday, Dec. 17, it features Andy Walken – a Seattle youngster discovered in a nationwide casting search – as Ralphie Parker, the everoptimistic youngster who hopes to be gifted with a Red Ryder BB gun, despite his mother’s (Maya Rudolph) warning that it’s dangerous.

Matthew Broderick will serve as the tale’s narrator, with other roles filled by Chris Diamantopoulos (“Silicon Valley”) as Ralphie’s gruff,

furnace-battling father, Jane Krakowski (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “30 Rock”) as schoolteacher Miss Shields, and Rudolph’s fellow “Saturday Night Live” alum Ana Gasteyer as the mother of one of Ralphie’s friends. “In Living Color” veteran David Alan Grier returns to Fox to play the piece’s Santa Claus.

The musical first was staged in Kansas City in 2009, then played Seattle and had a national tour before its 2012 debut on Broadway, where original “Ralphie” Peter Billingsley was among its producers and it garnered three Tony Award nominations.

“For years, our Christmas movies were sentimental and sort of cozy and warm, and here came this movie that wasn’t that,” says executive producer Marc Platt, who also oversaw last year’s “Grease Live!” for Fox. “It was subversive and funny and sort of recognizable (in) all the family experiences each one of us have. We could

relate to it. In taking it from the stage to the live television event, we’re going to first and foremost deliver the humor and the comedy of the movie as it’s represented on stage.”

Then there’s the work of composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, also of the Plattco-produced movie “La La Land” – which brought them Oscars for the song “City of Stars” – and Broadway’s “Dear Evan Hansen,” for which the duo earned Tony Awards. Platt explains, “We’re going to take fantastic music that (they) wrote that leads into the subversive comedy, but also extracts from the subtext the warmth of that family ... and there will be new music as well. So we’ll deliver the ‘A Christmas Story’ story, but it’s a live event.”

Also the co-composer (with Pasek) of songs for the new Hugh Jackman movie “The Greatest Showman,” Paul reasons that Ralphie makes an ideal musical character through “his fantasies and his

wild imagination, and those are sort of screaming out to become musical numbers and to be realized on stage with choreography and production values that are very different from the classic film. That’s why it felt to us like, ‘Oh, we’re not just taking this great, wonderful title and this story that everyone loves and throwing it on stage, but we can make things special about it that are just for the stage.’

“I think similarly, that’s what we’re also planning on doing with the television broadcast,” Paul notes, “what can we do that’s just for TV that’s very special with the same story, because it does ‘sing’ so much. There are characters who are larger than life. There’s a larger-than-life imagination at the center of the story. And it’s a kid with a really big want at Christmastime, and those wants sing in a really special and exciting way, at least for us as songwriters.”

SANTA CLAUS

His parents and sister died when he was only 6 years old, and he was raised by several families in his small fishing village. It’s hard to believe that a child with such tragic beginnings grew into a man who brings joy to children all over the Earth: Santa Claus.

“As with most things, I sort of fell into the job,” Claus says. “I began making toys that first year after my parents died. I wanted to give something back to the families who cared for me, so I began carving wooden toys for the children. Every year I would deliver the toys to more and more children. The next thing I knew, I was making toys for the whole village.”

Claus hired some elves, bought some reindeer and began developing ideas for new toys for children. Fifty years later, his generosity has grown into a worldwide effort.

He’s often asked how he makes it to so many homes in one night, and whether his reindeer really fly. “A man has to have a few secrets,” he says with a mysterious smile. “The children who believe know in their hearts I will find them.”

up; Santa’s watching.’ Then they expect the little darlings to walk up and sit on my lap at one of those malls. There is sheer terror in their eyes. I know I’d be more than a little scared of some guy who watches my every move and then decides if I’ve been good or bad.

“Christmas is about celebrating love and joy,” he continues. “Parents need to understand that our children are the most important reason any of us are here. Show them you love and appreciate them, and watch them grow into wonderful people.”

Marital status: Married. “She knows I’m not going anywhere. I’m addicted to her creamy hot chocolate and sugar cookies.”

Film: “Well, I have a fondness for holiday films. My favorite was probably ‘The Santa Clause’ with that Tim Allen fellow. The idea that a novice could take over this job made me belly laugh the whole way through.”

Music: “We go for variety here at the North Pole. The elves play everything from Ricky Martin and Smashing Pumpkins at our after-Christmas party. My wife loves Andy Williams.” Checking in with

Claus says he isn’t really happy about parents using his name to help promote good behavior. “All year these kids hear, ‘You better straighten

Prado gives up law to go ‘Baked in Vermont’

Imagine giving up a successful law career and running a production company to become a full-time baker. You’d have to be pretty passionate about all things related to butter, flour and eggs to make a change so drastic.

But that’s exactly what Gesine Prado, host of the Saturday Food Network series “Baked in Vermont,” did to pursue what she gradually realized was her first love. And she hasn’t looked back.

“I’ve baked my entire life. There was not a moment that I didn’t bake,” Prado explains. “Like during college, during winter finals, I was making gingerbread houses instead of studying, and instead of studying for the bar, I baked. And I actually passed on the first go and I tried to convince people that baking was the key. ... And all those things should have been clues from the very beginning that my calling was, you know, everything other than what I was doing – it was the baking that was my calling.”

In each 30-minute episode of her midday series, Prado walks viewers through the various steps in preparing the recipes that she herself developed, be it a Charlotte Royale chocolate cake with homemade caramels, a chocolate yule log, a turkey pot pie or a hearty pork pie with a big green salad.

All episodes are filmed at her 18th century farmhouse in Hartford, Vt., which is attached to the cooking school she runs, Sugar Glider Kitchen. The sister of actress Sandra Bullock, she’s also an instructor for King Arthur Flour and Stonewall Kitchen, has written four baking cookbooks and a memoir and owned and operated a bakery in Montpelier, Vt.

What book are you currently reading?

“I am reading a book by a writer named Attica Locke called ‘Bluebird, Bluebird.’ And I’ve known her personally for years. I discovered her when I was in my other life running an entertainment company reading stuff, and I read her books and scripts and it’s one of the few times that I was like shot out of my job and was just reading for joy.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“We did a sous-vide wild salmon and ... a faro and microgreen salad and a vinaigrette.”

What is your next project?

“I am working on a book on cakes – surprise, surprise. It’s about fantastical cakes using my knowledge as a pastry chef to kind of guide bakers of all knowledge or no knowledge in making fantastic or gorgeous cakes.”

When was your last vacation, where and why?

“It wasn’t a long one but it was for my husband’s 50th birthday in September and we went to Quebec to Manoir Hovey ... . It’s on Lake Massawippi – and I just like saying ‘Lake Massawippi’ – and it’s a fantastic food destination. So it’s this old bit of a manse right on the lake and then they do fantastic meals. So we just sat and ate for days. ... It was fantastic.”

Thanks to colorization, what’s old is new again ... though the two classic sitcoms involved never have gone out of style.

CBS has given “I Love Lucy” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show” new hues before, and with the end-of-year holidays approaching, the network again adds that treatment to two of the most popular series in its history. Boasting two colorized episodes each, new editions of the “I Love Lucy Christmas Special” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show – Now in Living Color!” air Friday, Dec. 22.

A different “Lucy” episode is paired with that one each year, and this time, it’s “The Fashion Show.” Lucy participates in the title event, but only after overspending massively on a dress for it. All friends of Ball, the wives of several top film stars of the mid1950s appeared as themselves in the story, including the spouses of William Holden, Van Heflin and Gordon MacRae.

‘Lucy’ and ‘Dick

Van Dyke’ get colorized again

Net Picks

“The Indian Detective,” www.netflix.com

Canadian comic Russell Peters is front and center of this fourpart fish-out-of-water dramedy, in which he stars as a suspended Toronto cop who heads to India to visit his father and becomes embroiled in a murder case that leads him to uncover a dangerous conspiracy involving a billionaire developer (William Shatner). Dropping Tuesday, the limited series also stars Anupam Kher (“Silver Linings Playbook”), Christina Cole (“Suits”) and Mishqah Parthiephal.

In a real way, both telecasts also serve as tributes to a couple of their key talents who passed away this year. Bob Schiller was a frequent writer of “I Love Lucy” in its later seasons, having worked with longtime creative partner Bob Weiskopf earlier on “Our Miss Brooks.” And of course, the death of Mary Tyler Moore hit hard for “Dick Van Dyke Show” fans who adored her as Laura Petrie, as well as the countless admirers of Moore’s eponymous 1970 sitcom.

Indeed, Schiller’s credit is on “The Christmas Episode,” which has become something of a viewing tradition again since it’s been part of every “I Love Lucy Christmas Special” to date. The tale is marked by flashbacks that recall milestones in Lucy Ricardo’s (Lucille Ball) pregnancy with Little Ricky, including the ever-touching scene in which her nightclub-star husband Ricky (Desi Arnaz, Ball’s thenspouse) sings “We’re Having a Baby,” scanning the audience in search of the person who’s expecting ... not realizing it’s his own wife.

“The Wine Show: Season 2,” www.hulu.com

The South of France is the backdrop for Season 2 of this culinary series, which sees returning host Matthew Goode (“Downton Abbey”) joined by James Purefoy (“Hap and Leonard”) to trek around the picturesque region in search of wines to match a six-course French lunch prepared by Michelinstarred chef Stephane Reynaud. Along the way, they go on adventures that include rounding up bulls on horseback in the Camargue and cooking their own lunch in the sweltering kitchen of the legendary Palme d’Or restaurant in Cannes.

Not surprisingly, the “Dick Van Dyke Show” episodes were selected by series creator Carl Reiner (an executive producer of the special) to spotlight Moore. First is “My Blonde-Haired Brunette” in which Laura changes her hair color in a bid to spice up her marriage to variety-show writer Rob (Van Dyke). Then, “October Eve” finds Laura horrified to see herself without clothes in a painting she posed for, with Reiner (who usually was seen on the show as TV star Alan Brady) playing the artist.

While the colorized editions of “I Love Lucy” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show” remain broadcast-network events, the two comedies often are available for viewing regularly. “Lucy” has been a Hallmark Channel staple (though it’s getting a rest during the holidays for the channel’s abundance of Christmas movies), and both shows also have had recurring runs on MeTV.

For now, though, they’ll bring seasonal color to CBS again – and, in turn, CBS will bring color to them again.

“The Last Post,” www.amazon.com/Season-1-Official-Trailer/dp/B077KPYRNF/

“The Night of” executive producer Peter Moffat is the creative force behind this six-episode dramatic series set in Aden, Yemen, and centering on the lives of a unit of Royal Military Police officers and their families. Dropping Friday, the series stars Jessica Raine (“Call the Midwife”), Jessie Buckley (“War and Peace”) and Jeremy Neumark Jones (“Denial”).

Prescott shoulders the load in BIG D

The Dallas Cowboys are in the midst of finding out the character of their second-year quarterback Dak Prescott, who leads the Cowboys when they visit the Oakland Raiders on NBC’s Sunday Night football on Sunday, Dec. 17. Both teams can only wish they were having the seasons they were a year ago, when at this time in the season they were headed for the playoffs. Now, both are fighting just to sneak in as a Wild Card team.

After a brilliant 2016 season in which he was honored as the NFL Rookie of the year, Dak Prescott has faced much adversity this season. Although the pass rush has improved, the Dallas defense has been dismal, putting more pressure on the offense and the sophomore quarterback. Toss in running back Ezekiel Elliott’s sixgame suspension, which extends through this game, aging receivers, and injuries on the offensive line, and much of the load falls to the young quarterback. To his credit, Prescott is poised to match or exceed last season’s yardage and touchdown numbers, but he’s also thrown twice as many interceptions as in 2016.

The Cowboys coaching staff has appeared to utilize Prescott more to manage the game than to try to win it. If he is to be their franchise quarterback of the future, as many feel he is, the time has come to not only capitalize on his known skills, but to find out if he does or doesn’t have the potential to be a long-term NFL quarterback.

CANADIAN STAND-UP PETERS TAKES IT TO MUMBAI IN NETFLIX’S ‘THE INDIAN DETECTIVE’

William Shatner is acting royalty in Canada, the type of icon often mentioned in the same breath with Celine Dion, Wayne Gretzky and James Cameron as being among the country’s most important cultural exports to America.

So when it came time to act in a scene with the “Star Trek” legend in the Netflix fish-out-of-water dramedy “The Indian Detective,” Toronto-born and -raised comic Russell Peters was understandably verklempt.

“I was so geeked to be working with him,” Peters admits. “... And I got caught up when I first saw him on set. We were doing a scene together and he’s saying his lines and I’m just staring at him like a fan, and he’s waiting for me to reply with my lines. And I’m like, ‘Oh s...! Sorry, we’re acting. Let me get back to that.’ He was really cool and the guy’s a pro.”

Filmed in Toronto, South Africa and Mumbai, produced in Canada and dropping Tuesday, Dec. 19, the four-episode limited series features Peters (“Source Code,” “Life in Pieces”) in his first scripted-series starring role as Toronto cop Doug D’Mello, who heads to Mumbai to take care of his father, Stanley (Bollywood star Anupam Kher, “Silver Linings Playbook”), after an apparent heart attack.

Except it wasn’t a heart attack, just bad gas. But while there, Doug gets caught up in a murder case that leads him to uncover a dangerous conspiracy involving a shady real estate developer named David Marlowe (Shatner). As he investigates the case and deals with his ambivalence toward a country where, despite his heritage, he feels like an outsider, he catches the eye of a pretty public defender, Priya Sehgal (South African model/actress Mishqah Parthiephal), who suddenly finds herself questioning her life path.

“Doug D’Mello is a cop who’s ... got good instincts and he’s got a good heart but he sometimes makes bad calls and poor decisions,” Peters explains. “And ultimately he gets in trouble and has to pay the price for it by getting suspended for a month.

“And while he’s suspended –and demoted, by the way,” he continues, “he goes to visit his father in India since he’s got the time off anyway. And while he’s there, he meets a very attractive lady who is a public defender and asks him to help her with a case that she’s working on. And I solve the case and upset the local corrupt cops. And the hilarity and drama ensue.”
