Old time rock ‘n’ roll fans can have some happy Holly days at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
A concert combining Christmas music with a tribute to Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Richie Valens will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door, with proceeds benefiting Muskogee Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program.
Muskogee musician Jim Blair will don Holly’s thick black eyeglasses and play such hits as “Peggy Sue,” “Oh Boy” and “Maybe Baby.” He will be joined by Tommy Cummings as the Big Bopper and Andy Sanchez as Richie Valens. Blair, Sanchez and Cummings had earlier played the rockers in the 2013 Muskogee Little Theatre production of “Buddy — The Buddy Holly Story.”
Holly, the Big Bopper and Valens were killed in a plane crash after playing a played a concert in Clear Lake, Iowa, in 1959.
Blair said the second part of Friday’s show will evoke that final

“It ventures a little bit, because we still try to do some Christmas music. We want to keep it festive,”
Blair said. “You’ll hear the big hits of Richie Valens, the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly as it winds down.”
Ironically, Buddy Holly didn’t live long enough to cut a Christmas record, Blair said.
Sanchez said portraying Valens is a dream come true. Sanchez recalled the 1987 movie “La Bamba,” which profiled Valens’ short life.

Muskogee will reach around the world to spread holiday cheer this Saturday.
“An International Christmas” is the theme for this year’s Muskogee Christmas Parade, 5 p.m. Saturday. The route which goes from South Main Street, along Broadway, then to Muskogee Civic Center. It is a different route than past parades.
Main Street Muskogee Executive Director John Newby said he ’s hearing a variety of ways parade entries will go international. “ There’s going to be several floats,” he said. “I know there’s going to be one Caribbean. I think there’s one from Europe. It’s a pretty broad topic.”
The parade will show its global flavor early on as saxophonist Jermaine Mondaine plays the national anthem.
A marching bagpiper group will lead the parade, Newby said.
“There’s about eight of them,” he said.
Muskogee native Lonnie Barker — also known as the Christian “hip hope” artist L Boogie — will be parade grand marshal.
Newby described Barker as a “Grammy Award nominee, husband, father and community servant.”
“The Muskogee native comes home regularly to work with many of the youth here in Muskogee,” Newby said in a media release. “Also known by his performance name of “LBoogie,” he delivers a message of “HIP

Fire Dancer Zaya Starr will demonstrate some of his blazing routines along the route, Newby said.
The parade also will feature the Northeastern State University marching band, as well as the award-winning Oktaha High School marching band.
The parade is just the start of the festivities, however.
The Christian group Cloverton will start its a free Hallelujah Chr istmas Concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Civic Center.
According to Cloverton’s website, the group hit the music scene in 2011. Since then, the group recorded one of K-LOVE radio’s top loaded songs, “Take Me into the Beautiful.” The group has appeared on Glenn Beck’s The Blaze network, as well as CNN, according to the website.
They also released a Christmas set, “We Sing Joy.”

Newby said the band also is known for its Christmas-tinged cover of the Leonard Cohen song “Hallelujah.”
“They do some soft rock, something pretty much everyone likes, appeals to all generations,” Newby said.

At the end of the concert, Muskogee singers and wannabe singers can join in a flash choir.
Newby said Cloverton performers will ask audience members to join them in a song, likely “Hallelujah.”
“They’re on the concert stage, and they invite e veryone to join them,”

Newby said. “They basically lead the audience along. That’s why I call it a flash choir. It’s kind of an impromptu thing.”
He said the flash choir likely will be recorded and put on YouTube.

Richie Valens (Andy Sanchez, left) and Buddy Holly (Jim Blair, second left) rock on in a recent tribute concert. They are joined by, from third left, Elizabeth Escobar, Angelina Cummings, the Big Bopper (Tommy Cummings) and Micheal Rappe.
Great 1950s rock ‘n’ roll is recreated by musicians, from left, Jermaine Mondaine on saxophone, Jim Blair playing Buddy Holly, Elizabeth Escobar, Angelina Cummings and Micheal Rappe. The group will perform Friday at Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

that’s what Richie Valens did in the movie,” Sanchez said. “Never in my dreams did I think that would happen until Muskogee Little Theatre in ‘The Buddy Holly Story.’ Now, here we are, four years later, we’re still recreating that final concert on stage.”
He said that, as a performer, he wants to show his children “it’s possible to make music, have fun and enjoy doing it.”
Blair said performers want to do more than spread memories and Christmas cheer.
“To create an event that benefits these children, these angels, makes it worth that much more to everybody,” he said.
Muskogee Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program encourages people to “adopt” a needy child, veteran or senior. Angel Trees, located at Arrowhead Mall, feature names and wishes of the children, veterans or seniors (called “Elderberries”). Prospective donors can take an ornament and buy presents for the person named.
Friday’s benefit won’t be the only time the three get together as Holly, Valens and the Big Bopper.
They will perform in “Deck the Halls with Buddy Holly,” 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Legacy on Main Street in Eufaula.
The group also plays a tribute show 7:30 p.m. Dec. 22 at the Roxy Theater.

McDowell has spoken to several marching bands, but has received no applications so far.
“We waive the fees for marching bands, so we’d love to have them all,” she said.
Early bird registration of $15 ended Nov. 21, and it’s now $30 for the entry fee. A second check is also taken, McDowell said.
“It’s a deposit if $50 that is returned if you attend the Dec. 5 meeting; it’s about safety procedure, like do throw candy,” she said.
People walking can give out candy.
“You just can’t throw from a vehicle, and it’s important to clean up the staging area where a float is put together,” McDowell said. “I’m so excited to see the unique and fun floats. I think it’s going to be a good year. And the 5C’s Car Club is always in it; we’re so excited to have them.”
Announcers will be Jami Murphy, with the city of Tahlequah, and Ward 3 Tahlequah City Councilor Stephen Highers.
Rockin’ R Farms will be entering a Hay Rack Ride and Barrel Train in the parade.
“It’s out first time to be in this Christmas parade,” said Richard Roberts. “We had such a great success with the corn maze and pumpkin patch, we want to tell the community thank you from the parade.”
It’s pretty unusual to see a hay rack ride, Roberts said.
“I took a load of hay, filled it up with square bales, added wooden benches and rails to be safe, and steps on the front for everybody,” he said.
It’s also a first for Roberts.
“I’ve been in other parades, but it’s my first time in a nighttime Christmas parade with lights and decorations,” he said.
This will be the 11th year for Elizabeth Bird to volunteer with the event.
“I like the excitement of the parade, seeing the floats; they’re spectacular every year,” said Bird, whose job it is to corral the floats until it’s time for the parade to begin. “I’m amazed what people come up with.”
By the time every parade entry is in place, and they pass Bird on their way to Grand Avenue, their lights are on and all the bells and whistles are ready to go.
“It’s excitement when they reach me for the parade and to be finally moving,” Bird said. “I also love that it’s such a big parade. There are always at least 90 entries, hundreds of people in the parade, and thousands who come to watch it.”

Fifty years after her classic comedy-variety series debuted, Carol Burnett is still so glad she and viewers had that time together.
The entertainment icon returns to the soundstage where she and comrades Vicki Lawrence, Harvey Korman, Tim Conway and Lyle Waggoner did the show in CBS’ two-hour “Carol Burnett 50th Anniversary Special” Sunday, Dec. 3. Lawrence and Waggoner also appear in the program, though Conway was “under the weather” per Burnett at the time of the October taping.
The late Korman is recalled by guests including Jay Leno and Bill Hader in a segment devoted to his antics, and many others participate in helping Burnett mark the half-century milestone. Among them: Bernadette Peters (who was
the first guest ever booked for the series), Jim Carrey, Kristin Chenoweth, Harry Connick Jr., Martin Short, Jane Lynch, Stephen Colbert and Maya Rudolph. Bob Mackie, who designed countless costumes for “The Carol Burnett Show,” also appears.
“It was pretty overwhelming,” the ever-friendly, much-honored Burnett says of doing the special. A winner of 20-plus Emmy Awards, “The Carol Burnett Show” ended its run in 1978, and the title star has returned to its studio a number of times since: “We did some specials and the 25thanniversary reunion show there. Still, every time I go back and get on that stage, I think of all the wonderful memories that I have.”
Some of those, naturally, are related to the questionand-answer session Burnett
always opened her program with (and which she still does in the in-person show that she tours with). She has another of those openings in the new special, and she reveals of the questions, “Two of them are asked by Tom Selleck and Pat Boone! They were in the audience. And then, a lady asked about my grandmother and my pulling my ear. I didn’t do a lot of those, though, because the show was so chock-full of stuff we had to get to.”
That includes Burnett’s eventual rendering of “I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together” (written by her then-husband, “Carol Burnett Show” executive producer Joe Hamilton), and she notes that someone sings it with her for a special reason. “Harry Connick Jr. was born the day the show premiered – Sept. 11, 1967 – so I said, ‘Will you

(From left) Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Lyle Waggoner, Vicki Lawrence and Carol Burnett appear in “The Carol Burnett 50th Anniversary Special” Sunday on CBS.
join me in the theme song?’ And he said, ‘I’ve been waiting 50 years to do this.’ And he flew out (to Los Angeles) to do it. I was so thrilled.”
A sitcom pilot Burnett made for ABC (with Amy Poehler as an executive producer) is being redeveloped, but “The Carol Burnett Show” remains present in home-video releases, on YouTube and in repeats repackaged as “Carol Burnett and Friends” and shown weeknights on Me-TV.
“As a result, I’m getting fan mail from 9- and 10-yearolds,” she muses. “They’ll draw me pictures on their lined school paper, and it is so cute! And when I go out and do live shows every so often, I get audience members ranging from 9 to 90. I’ll keep doing those as long as I’m mobile.”

Tom Cullen is quick to note that playing noble Templar Knight Landry on the History drama series “Knightfall” was the hardest role of his career, mainly because of the physical demands.
After all, in how many other acting jobs does one don 50 pounds of aluminum alloy armor to run, jump, ride horseback, fight and do many of the things the 14th century English knights did, often in 100-plus degree heat during 12-14 hour shooting days? Little wonder then that the 32-year-old Welsh actor emerged from the project hardened though thoroughly exhausted.
But he readily admits that’s nothing compared to what the real Knights Templar did.
“The real Templars,” he says, “they were wearing steel and they were fighting all day for real with the adrenaline of fighting for one’s life in 100-degrees. But they were a different breed of man. I mean, they were extraordinary.”
The 10-episode series, which premieres Wednesday, Dec. 6, follows the medieval politics and warfare of the Knights, the most powerful military order of the Middle Ages, who were charged with protecting Christianity’s most sacred relics, particularly the holy grail.
As Landry, Cullen (“Downton Abbey”) plays the leader of the Templars, a headstrong knight obsessed with finding the lost cup of Christ. Simultaneously loyal and duplicitous, he’s the type of conflicted character Cullen embraces.
“(Landry is) struggling with his humanity and his faith,” he says. “He’s having an affair with a woman yet he’s in this brotherhood where he has to be celibate. And he’s lying to his brothers and he’s got to be loyal. And he’s this fearless warrior yet he’s beginning to get a sense of his own mortality.
“And from an egotistical point of view as an actor,” he continues, “I read that and I was like, ‘Oh my God! This is so challenging.’ And that’s something that really excites me and kind of turns me on.”

Talk to any competitive eater and they’ll tell you that, much like a professional athlete, what they do requires training.
They work out, watch what they eat, get plenty of rest and hydrate. A lot.
Same holds true for someone who eats large quantities of food for a living, as does Casey Webb, who returns for his second season as host of the Travel Channel series “Man v. Food,” starting Monday, Dec. 4. In taking on the show’s culinary challenges, be they downing a 2 1/2 pound burrito complete with scalding hot sauce or consuming a plate-sized prime rib, he finds having a healthy routine invaluable in attempting something that is by definition unhealthy.
And like a professional athlete, a good shot of adrenaline helps, too, in getting him to the finish line. That’s where the crowd that attends these tapings comes in.
“I kid you not,” Webb says, “the crowd really makes a difference between winning and losing and at least going the distance on these challenges. They really bring it and they bring it even more to the point where I rallied when I thought I wasn’t going to finish something and I have and I was able to just, let’s say, defeat it. ... “The Crown: Season 2,” www.netflix.com/title/80025678
The second season of this drama about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) continues with more political and social events that marked the second half of the 20th century, including Britain fighting an illegal war in Egypt, a scandal that took down Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and the revolutionary era of the 1960s. The 10-episode season begins streaming Friday.

Maggie Lawson already was “Psych”-ed for the holidays, but now, she’s even more excited to have cable movies debuting virtually back-to-back.
Seen in recent television seasons on such shows as “Two and a Half Men:” and “The Great Indoors,” the actress returns to her former cast-mates and series role – and USA Network – when “Psych: The Movie” revives the offbeat comedy-mystery (and, as fans would expect, its pineapple motif) Thursday, Dec. 7. Then on Saturday, Dec. 9, Lawson returns to Hallmark Channel as an actress trying to help save a theater threatened with closure in “Christmas Encore.”
“It was so much fun,” the friendly Lawson says of reuniting with “Psych” colleagues including such fellow stars as James Roday and Dule Hill, and creator and executive producer Steve Franks. “What an experience and what a time We bonded so much as a group and a family around our love for Tim (co-star Omundson, whose work on the film was relatively limited due

to a stroke he suffered last spring), and how much we missed him.”
Lawson maintains the presence of Omundson, alias uptight police detective Carlton Lassiter to her eternal-optimist Juliet O’Hara, “is one of my favorite things about the script” written by Franks and Roday.“ However, the actress adds Juliet is very much her own person: ”When we finished the show, she went to San Francisco, and she’s begun a new adventure. I love that Steve and James’ writing plays into that, because she has grown up and she’s a chief detective, and there’s a responsibility that comes with that.“
Particularly pleasing to Lawson was the chance to work more with Kirsten Nelson, still playing Juliet’s boss, Chief Karen Vick. “That relationship was really fun to explore,” Lawson confirms, adding her appreciation for the involvement of such additional returnees as Corbin Bernsen (as Henry Spencer, ex-cop father of Roday’s fake psychic Shawn) and Kurt Fuller (quirky coroner Woody). “We are a team in this,” notes Lawson, “and it was
“Inspiring Woman,” www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/inspiringwoman/ PBS’ Emmy-winning arts program “American Masters” comes forth with its first web offering, a six-part documentary series spotlighting inspiring female influencers. fun to shoot so many scenes with everyone together as a group.”
With “Christmas Encore,” Lawson returns to Hallmark Channel (after last June’s “My Favorite Wedding”) in a tale loosely patterned on “A Christmas Carol.” She explains her character “has been a struggling actress in New York City for a while, and she gets an opportunity to go into the corporate world in Chicago, then this chance comes along for her to do this play. She’s reunited with an old friend from her acting-school days (played by Brennan Elliott of ‘UnREAL’) who went on to become a big star and is directing the play, and they have to deal with their stuff.”
As for “Psych,” which still repeats weekdays on ION Television, Lawson has learned never to say “never.” She reasons the franchise could keep going “as long as the Psych-O’s (the show’s devotees) will have us, and we want to keep it alive for them as well. The whole reason this movie came about was because of them, and it feels like their love is only growing. We’re so lucky.”

“Shut Eye: Season 2,” www.hulu.com/shut-eye
The second season of this drama finds Charlie Haverford (Jeffrey Donovan) still plagued by visions as he attempts to get away from Fonso, Rita (Isabella Rossellini) and Eduardo (David Zayas). Meanwhile, wife Linda (KaDee Strickland) struggles with her concern over Charlie’s sanity and her grief over Gina’s death. The 10-episode second season begins streaming Wednesday.

At 7-2 and sitting atop the NFC South as of Week 10, the New Orleans Saints own one of the best records of the NFL, and are regularly mentioned as a Super Bowl contender.
Much of their success is attributed to an offense that ranks second in the NFL with an average of 402.4 yards per game and is captained by veteran quarterback Drew Brees, who is enjoying a fine season (266 yards per game; a 104.0 rating) though one not typical for him in his years in the Big Easy.
While past seasons would see Brees rack up more than 5,000 yards in a pass-heavy scheme, this year’s edition of the Saints’ attack is more run-oriented, with much of the load falling on Mark Ingram (672 yards; 4.7 yards per carry) and rookie Alvin Kamara (417; 6.5), thus cutting Brees’ total through nine games down to 2,398 and putting him on a pace for more than 4,200 yards through the air.
Yes, the Saints are less reliant on the passing game and that likely is due to the
status of Brees himself. While the Texas native has said he’d like to finish his career in New Orleans, the numbers are working against him. He’s in the final year of his contract and the Saints are unlikely to shell out big bucks for a passer who will be 39 next training camp.
So as the postseason beckons, Brees may be looking at one last hurrah in the Saints’ gold and black, one that could end with a Lombardi Trophy.

If you missed it in its premiere on Sundance TV this fall, a gentle new comedy from Australia currently streaming on Sundance Now could prove to be worth your attention.
In “Rosehaven,” comedians and real-life best friends Luke McGregor and Celia Pacquola created and star in this series about 30-something longtime pals grappling with adulthood in a rural town on the Aussie island of Tasmania. While uber-earnest Daniel (McGregor) has returned to Rosehaven to work for his domineering mother’s (Kris McQuade) real estate business after failing to make it on the mainland, free spirited Emma (Pacquola) turns up on Daniel’s doorstep after herself being dumped by her husband during her honeymoon.
Both are thrown into the dynamics of small-town life, with Daniel being confronted by ghosts of his adolescent past in a town that hasn’t moved on. Emma, by contrast, feels freed by her life on the lam and her anonymity in this strange burg populated by the charming and the eccentric. Both find their sanity and their friendship tested.
The series was filmed in several locations in Tasmania, from where both comics hail.
“When you grow up in a small town,” explains Pacquola, “it feels very specific being with the people who are actually (from that town). And (there are) a lot of similarities, just things like everyone knows each other really well, sort of traditions are formed, small things become really big things and it affects everyone. I just thought the quiet is something I really remember in a small town, the boredom and sort of finding things to do and to fill the time with. So that’s why people could really get into crafts, things like the town fair because people really got behind it because your whole world is this little place.”
“It almost reminds me of school in a way,” McGregor adds, “where you kind of have to get along with everyone because if you don’t all of a sudden you don’t have access to a service or a shop or something like that.”
As Daniel toils for his mother, evicting tenants and trying to be ever the adult, Emma embraces her inner child and simple pleasures. They’re polar opposites who lean on each other to get through life’s trials. But both actors make clear that no romantic feelings will develop and this relationship will remain platonic.
“We think it’s something more interesting to tell that story,” Pacquola says, “particularly in your 30s where platonic friendships are sort of harder because people have families and sort of move apart and career and whatever, so you usually don’t spend this much time with a buddy. ... And their characters really complement each other, where they meet in the middle. ... They both think that the other one is their sidekick.”
“Yeah, they both think they’re Batman, basically,” McGregor says with a laugh.
