Two weeks after Apple TV+ joined the streaming fray, there comes another 800-pound gorilla – or in this case, mouse – into the room with the debut of Disney+.
Signing on Tuesday, Nov. 12, the new ser vice – which costs subscribers $6.99/month or $69.99/year – will at launch offer up about a dozen original series and movies plus more than 30 other original productions to be rolled out over the next two years. That’s in addition to the more than 7,500 episodes of TV series such as “ The Simpsons,” “Amazing Planet,” “Wicked Tuna” and “ That’s So Raven” and the 500 or so movie titles including “Iron Man,” “Toy Stor y,” “High School Musical” and the first seven “Star Wars” movies that become available this week.
Speaking of “High School Musical,” that 2006 feature film is the inspiration for one of the original entries available Tuesday “High School Musical: The Musical – The Series” is a 10-episode scripted series that follows a group of students as they prepare for opening night of their first-ever production of – well, see the title. Joshua Bassett, Olivia Rodrigo, Kate Reinders and Sofia Wylie head the cast.
In that same vein on launch day is the unscripted series “Encore!” from executive producer Kristen Bell, which reunites former castmates from a high school musical and tasks them with re-creating their original performances, with all the emotions, rivalries and faded friendships that might entail.
Also starting up Tuesday is “ The World According to Jeff Goldblum,” in which the Oscar- and Emmy-nominated actor does a deep dive into such commonplace items as
sneakers and ice cream and pulls up some surprising facts, revelations and histories.
If it is holiday fare you seek, the comedy movie “Noelle” stars Anna Kendrick as the title character, Kris Kringle’s daughter, who must take over the family business when her brother (played by Bill Hader) goes missing.
Other originals available on opening day include “ The Imagineering Stor y,” a documentar y series chronicling the 65-year histor y of Walt Disney Imagineering; “Mar vel’s Hero Project,” spotlighting the difference young heroes are making in their communities; “ The Mandalorian,” an action series from the “Star Wars” universe starring Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers, Gina Carano and Giancarlo Esposito; the animated short “Forky Asks a Question,” in which the character from “Toy Stor y 4” explores questions about how the world works; and the movie “Lady and the Tramp,” a retelling of the 1955 animated classic.
Later in 2019 and into 2020 and 2021, subscribers can look for ward to more original fare such as “Lizzie McGuire,” in which Hilar y Duff reprises her role from the 2001-04 Disney Channel kids show; “WandaVision,” starring Elizabeth Olsen in a new Marvel Studios offering from the “Avengers” franchise; “Monsters at Work,” a “Monsters, Inc.”inspired animated series with voice work from Ben Feldman, Billy Cr ystal and John Goodman; “(Re)Connect,” an unscripted offering in which troubled families are forced to shut out outside distractions and devices and address their issues; and “Be Our Chef,” a competition show hosted by Angela Kinsey (“ The Office”) in which contestants are tasked with preparing Disney-inspired dishes.

Pie-making is raised – literally and figuratively – to
an ar t form on ‘Thanksgiving
Pie may be one of the purest forms of comfort food but it’s also art, and it’s at the center of a holiday competition series coming up this week on Food Network.
On “Thanksgiving Pie Fight,” premiering Thursday, Nov. 14, four top amateur pie bakers endeavor to create pies that not only are pleasing to the palate but also intricate, imaginative and outrageous in their designs, with some stacked up to over a foot in height. The winner, as determined by a judging panel of Nacho Aguirre (“Girl Scout Cookie Championship”), Scott Conant (“Chopped”) and TV/movie producer Jessica Clark-Bojin, wins a $10,000 prize.
The first part of the competition is called the “Pie-scraper Challenge” – a play on “skyscraper” –about which host Sunny Anderson (“The Kitchen”) explains, “Obviously for that one, we’re looking for height (and if it is) sturdy so it travels well or moves well from table to table. You know, you’ve always got to transport (the pie) and that was always one of my most favorite parts about watching shows like this, where they built something gargantuan. You know, can it move?”
And the pie must look good – and not just from the front.
“Think about 360 degrees,” Anderson says. “So you could turn the pie around and every single side of it is beautiful, and sometimes the pie-scrapers, they’ll give them like a back and so you have a faceforward, more of a presentation side. But some of these pies are just truly spectacular and definitely go over a foot, so it’s something to watch.”

bit more stress, a lot more adrenaline and time flies like you wouldn’t believe. Then in addition to that, you’re not even in your own kitchen. You know, you’re on a stage, a set that has been built and they put a kitchen together for you but you’re a little bit out of sorts. So we give the bakers enough time to create and that’s really important.”
Still, Anderson reports, time management was an issue for some.
“There were a couple of other moments where we’re like, ‘Oh my goodness, are they going to finish? Are they going to get this thing done? Or is it going to fall over?’ ” she says. “And we had a couple of catastrophes, I can’t give it all away but it was truly fun to see in person. ”

When Nick (Jesse Metcalfe) loses his all-consuming corporate job as the holidays approach, he resorts to working at a Christmas tree lot owned by a warm-hearted widower (Clarke Peters) and meets Julie (Autumn Reeser) an astronomy teacher currently being hounded by a ruthless financial institution. Julie’s optimistic manner makes Nick want to help her, but as the two start to get close, she discovers that he once represented the firm who is making her life a misery. Trouble ensues in this 2019 Christmas romance.
