Kelsey Grammer, Jess Salgueiro and Jack Cutmore-Scott in “Frasier”

The doctor is in again: Kelsey Grammer returns as ‘Frasier ’
“The Apar tment” remains well wor th visiting c lassic corner

Jack Lemmon and Shirley Maclaine in “The Apar tment”

Still one of movie history’s greatest comedies, though it has its share of pathos as ell, “The Apartment” claimed the Oscar as the best picture of 1960. An MGM+ rive-In attraction on Monday, Oct. 9, and Tuesday, Oct. 10, director and co-writer Billy Wilder’s tale casts Jack Lemmon as an office drone who’s quite popular with much of the management at his workplace … thanks to his relatively tiny apartment, which he loans out to the bosses so that they can have romantic trysts there. The company’s main chief (Fred MacMurray) discovers what’s going on and cuts himself in, but his affair is with the office building’s elevator operator (Shirley MacLaine) – who is greatly liked by Lemmon’s character, forcing him to develop more of a conscience about what he’s been facilitating. This simply is a great film that not only has held up on its own over 60-plus years, it also inspired the hit stage musical “Promises, Promises.” The excellent cast also includes Ray Walston, Jack Kruschen and Edie Adams.

There’s been room for “Frasier” ever since the original series ended, so there’s certainly space for a revival.

After winning four of his five Primetime Emmys for playing the title part, Kelsey Grammer returns as the high-minded chiatrist in a new Paramount+ version of “Frasier” that starts streaming Thursday, Oct. 12 (CBS will give the revival’s first two episodes a broadcast run Oct. 17.). Originated by the actor a supporting character on “Cheers,” Dr Frasier Crane returns that show’s Boston setting, with an outline of that city replacing that of his hometown of Seattle (where the first “Frasier” took place) in the opening credits.

Also mostly new is the supporting cast, which was the case when Grammer initially transferred “Frasier” into his own show. uch figures as Frasier’s brother Niles, played by David Hyde ierce (“Julia”), who chose not to return, and his father Martin, played by John Mahoney, (“Moonstruck,” 1987) who died in 2018, are now absent, as are Martin’s caretaker and Niles’ eventual wife, Daphne (Jane Leeves, “The Resident”), and Martin’s frequent-Frasier-nemesis dog, Eddie. However, Peri Gilpin (“Scorpion”) and Bebe Neuwirth (“Julia”) — alias, respectively, rasier’s radio show producer Roz and his ex-wife Lilith — will back on a recurring basis.

Among actors joining “Frasier” for the first time are Jack Cutmore-Scott (“Oppenheimer,” 2023) as Frasier’s son, Freddy, and new actor Anders Keith as David, the son of Niles and Daphne (born in the finale of the original “Frasier”). Nicholas Lyndhurst (“Only Fools and Horses”) is also a regular cast member as a college pal of Frasier’s who is a professor now. Among the aspects etaining familiarity, though, will be a new rendering of the theme song (“Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs”) recorded by rammer, who also remains an executive producer

The first “Frasier” continues to be seen regularly in repeats, and having yielded more than 250 episodes over 11 seasons, its successor has a long and celebrated legacy to live up to – encompassing its Primetime Emmy wins for outstanding comedy series five consecutive years (1994-98). Much as the first show was, the new one is an exploration of Dr Crane starting over. When last seen, he was headed for Chicago, presumably for him to be together with the girlfriend he had at the time (played by guest star Laura Linney, “Ozark”). That became his destination after let go of a San Francisco television job he had gotten. utting Frasier back in Boston is bound to give interesting twists to the premise in which viewers first got to know him. At least on a steady basis, he’ll be without Sam Malone (Ted Danson, “The Good Place”), Diane Chambers (Shelley Long, “Modern Family”) and the others he commiserated with regularly at the bar “where everybody knows your name.” Much as he did upon his move to Seattle, he’ll be surrounded by a fresh group that the new “Frasier’s” makers clearly hope will catch on with viewers in the same way Niles and others did.

“How the West Was Won” (Turner Classic Movies, Monday, Oct. 9): Launching a two-night “National Parks and Landmarks” event that concludes the following Monday, this 1962 epic handled by multiple directors (John Ford among them) originally used the Cinerama process to tell several stories of the Old West, underscored by truly majestic settings. Spencer Tracy narrates the picture, whose huge cast includes James Stewart, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Debbie Reynolds, Karl Malden, Robert Preston, Gregory Peck, Carroll Baker, Richard Widmark, Carolyn Jones and George Peppard.

“Frasier” (Cozi TV, Tuesday, Oct. 10): In the week when a revival of the “Cheers” spinoff begins on Paramount+, the first episode of the original version gets a repeat. Kelsey Grammer relocates his character, Dr. Frasier Crane, from Boston back to his hometown of Seattle — where his reunions with his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and their father Martin (John Mahoney) aren’t exactly conventional. Griffin Dunne and Linda Hamilton were the first actors to provide guest voices as callers to Frasier’s radio show.

“The Simpsons” (Freeform, Wednesday, Oct. 11): The “Treehouse of Horror” episodes have long been traditions of this animated series during the Halloween season, and a mini-marathon compiles several of them. Each contains multiple stories, many of them spoofing actual horror movies, as Homer (voice of Dan Castellaneta) and his family assume different roles to generate laughs as well as potential chills.

Creepy confections: ‘The Big Bake’ returns with a Halloween-themed season

Dig into some deadly delights as a new “The Big Bake: Halloween” airs Monday Food Network.

The series, hosted by Brad Smith (“Eddsworld welcomes returning “Big Bake” champions ans, each looking to redeem themselves than-life, “Halloween”-themed event.

Food Network describes: “In each episode, professional baking teams have five hours bake and decorate a grand-scale cake creation on a particular theme. These bakers need and bold, blowing up their designs to gigantic portions and thinking outside the (baker

As “Big Bake” competitions take place out the year, this iteration celebrates the and scariest season of them all, tasking eye-popping and downright dreary challenges feature spooky Halloween treats, creepy fa-boo-lous shrieks, scares and costumes

So far this season, the teams have been create cakes of the best “boo-ticians” in town, decorated with their creepy clientele, and then made their way to the carnival, where funhouse screams were on the menu as Smith asked the baking teams to create some spine-chilling desserts. But fear not. The scariest snacks are still to come.

During this upcoming episode, Food Network promises that witches will be the “talk of the town,” as a description for the challenge shares that “Brad Smith asks the baking teams to wave their magic whisks to create cakes featuring the queens of Halloween.” In the following weeks, the competition continues, as bakers serve some “big bog bakes” with swampthemed cakes and later tackle their fears by making creations that feature thrill-seeking monsters.

bestof ...

As tension rises and suspense builds, bakers must do their best to impress this season’s judges – pastry chef Ron Ben-Israel (“Cake Wars”), cornerback-turned-chef Eddie Jackson (“Outchef ’d”) and internet personality/cookbook author Danni Rose (“Danni’s Juke Joint Comfort Food Cookbook: Modern-Day Recipes, Ole Skool Flavas,” releasing in November 2023) – and avoid elimination, making it to the end of the competition, where the most ambitious (and terrifying) baker will go home with a $10,000 prize.

Jam-packed with creepy confections, taunting treats and bizarre baked goods, new episodes of “The Big Bake: Halloween” air Mondays through October on Food Network.

BEST EDGAR ALLAN POE-INSPIRED MOVIES

“Phantom of the Rue Morgue” (1954): The success of “House of Wax” the previous year made Warner Bros. eager to release another thriller in 3D, and Poe’s “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” became the source of this melodrama starring Karl Malden as an experiment-immersed professor

“House of Usher” (1960):

“B”-movie legend Roger Corman began a series of Poe-inspired films by casting genre staple Vincent Price as a member of the allegedly cursed Usher family who tries to ward off a would-be in-law (Mark Damon). A new version of “The Fall of the House of Usher” starts streaming Thursday, Oct. 12, on Netflix.

“The Premature Burial” (1962): An Englishman (Ray Milland) with a continual fear of being buried alive eventually suffers that fate ... only to be saved, setting him on a path of vengeance.

“The Raven” (1963): Corman teamed Price with two other horror-movie legends — Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre — in this saga of battling sorcerers, one of whom (Lorre) has been transformed into the title bird. Jack Nicholson stars as Lorre’s son.

“The Oblong Box” (1969): Price stars again, along with fellow horror great Christopher Lee, in the stor y of a man who has his brother (Alister Williamson) put into a death trance and confined to a coffin (or “oblong box”).

“Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1971): The Poe tale got a big revision in a screenplay about an acting troupe performing the stor y – and becoming murder targets themselves.

“Two Evil Eyes” (1990): Genre veterans Dario Argento and George A. Romero each directed one of the two Poe-inspired stories combined in this feature, featuring Adrienne Barbeau and Har vey Keitel.

“The Raven” (2012): John Cusack plays Poe himself in a stor y that really links to the title tale in name only, as it follows the author through the last days of his life while he chases a serial killer
