Gilded Age”

Operatic opposition: HBO period drama lifts cur tain on Season 2

is here again classic corner

Nick Castle in “Halloween”

“Halloween”

Though it’s a potent chiller anytime, there clearly isn’t better scheduling for director and co-writer John Carpenter’s original 1978 thriller “Halloween” than the week of trick-or-treating itself. AMC gives the scare show a eal workout by showing it Sunday, Oct. 29, Monday, Oct. 30, and Tuesday, Oct. 31 – along with several of the sequels, which were guaranteed when the first movie became one of the most profitable independent films of all time.

Recent Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis secured her “ scream queen” label as Laurie Strode, the babysitter who ends up in a battle for sur vival against Michael Myers (played mainly by Nick Castle), a sanitarium escapee who targets various people in an Illinois town. Donald Pleasence also stars as the masked and highly lethal Michael’s psychiatrist, who does what he can to recapture the killer Carpenter also composed the memorably minimalist music score.

first heard as a quippy one-liner from famous New York humorLebowitz (“Pretend It’s a City”) or read in Esther Crain’s book “The in New York, 1870–1910,” there is little doubt you’ve heard York City’s penchant for change. Per Crain’s aforementioned eleased in 2016 and available through most major booksellers, “the common observation about New York is that it never stops evolving.” especially true in the HBO series “The Gilded Age,” premiering its home network and the Max streaming service Sunday, Oct. Carrie Coon (“Gone Girl,” 2014), Cynthia Nixon (“Sex and and Christine Baranski (“Mamma Mia!,” 2008) as some of New wealthy gossips, the series follows a group of business moguls socialites as they work hard to make a name for themselves and build an New York City during the turn of the 20th century. stars as Bertha Russell, a “new money heiress” who caused some maSeason 1 alongside her husband, railroad tycoon George Russell pector, “The Plot Against America”), and her fellow socialite Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy, “The Nanny Diaries,” 2007), the leader of social society called The Four Hundred. With her own societal foremost in her sights, Bertha often stirs up more trouble than is get what she wants.

blame for her fair bit of trouble is Marian Brook (new talent acobson), who fell on hard times when her father died in the premiere and began Season 1 by moving into her estranged aunts’ bit of a lifestyle makeover in the Big Apple. Marian’s aunts, (Nixon) and Agnes Van Rhijn (Baranski), both belong to old-money world and thus have very particular views on how things done among New York’s finest. While Marian does her best to aunts, she has also learned that not everyone subscribes to her conservative school of thought.

eturning alongside Coon, Murphy, Jacobson, Nixon and Baranski 2 is Denée Benton (“UnREAL”), who plays highly motivated eggy Scott, who moved from Pennsylvania to New York City with Despite holding down a job as Agnes’ secretary, Peggy is of resocietal standing herself and has come to enjoy the company of friend in a new city. She also enjoys testing the boundaries set in those in high-up positions, often complicating matters for herself closest to her into the show’s second season, the Primetime Emmy-winning ws more of the petticoat-clad drama that comes along with Gildexpansion. This time, according to the official HBO trailer, it seems bulk of the hullabaloo centers on the world of the operatic arts. specifically, it likely revolves around the 1886 closing of the Metropolitan Opera House.

As newcomers to the show (and maybe even some avid fans) may not yet know, “The Gilded Age” takes many of its plot lines from the annals of history. While hardly to be considered a true story, the first season held to realities of the robber barons of the late 1800s, like the railroading Russells. (The Astors were also a real family, fictionalized for the series.) Now headed into its second season, “The Gilded Age” is placing its focus on the so-called “Opera House War” of the 1890s and the subsequent end of the “Knickerbocker era. ”

more retro rewinds

“ The Nightmare Before Christmas” (Freeform, Sunday, Oct. 29): Produced by Tim Burton, this bizarrely and famously unique 1993 story centers around Jack Skellington (voice shared by Chris Sarandon and composer Danny Elfman), the offbeat leader of annual celebrations of trick-or-treating. He also wants to honor Christmas, but others don’t know how to separate the spirit of that occasion from the Halloween events they’re used to, to the degree that a plot to kidnap Santa Claus is hatched. Catherine O’Hara and Paul Reubens – alias “Pee-wee Herman” – also are in the voice cast.

“Buck Rogers” (Turner Classic Movies, Saturday, Nov. 4): A fun element of weekend mornings on TCM is the inclusion of old-time serials, and this 1939 sci-fi saga gets another showing from the beginning with the chapter “Tomorrow’s World.” That title describes where dirigible crew members Buck and Buddy (Buster Crabbe, Jackie Moran) end up after being caught in a storm and placed in suspended animation for five centuries. The world in which they revive is overseen by the sinister Kane (Anthony Warde), but they find allies in a so-called “hidden city.”

Inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel of the same name, this series follows a group of fun-loving young American girls as they explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. Taste and talent: Peruvian chef Franco Noriega sizzles in ‘Hot Dish’

Good food and good stories — that’s a perfect meal. And having tried everything from acting to modeling to competitive — before becoming a professional restaurateur Peruvian chef certainly has both to share. episodes of “Hot Dish With Franco” air on Food Network.

During this series, “Franco shares personal stories of his Peruvian and Italian roots as delicious dishes with his signature flare for Food Network describes. “From quick and night meals to brunch and classic Latin dishes twist, all of Franco’s food is easy, accessible people together.”

Even before the show’s premiere, Noriega asm for the program was evident. “Delicious always been central in my life as some of memories have been in the kitchen eating ing with my family and traveling across the joying fantastic meals. Now, I’m thrilled my favorite recipes and lifelong passion for cooking with Food Network viewers,” he recently shared.

Throughout the series’ six half-hour episodes, Food Network promises that “Franco takes viewers on a culinary journey, sprinkling in tidbits of his Latin American and Italian background along with cooking tips and tricks,” exploring everything from cheese-covered Arepas with Chorizo and Vegetable Ceviche to Crispy Parmesan Lemon Asparagus, Deconstructed Tiramisu and ooey-gooey Lava Chocolate Chip Cookies in previously aired episodes.

During the season’s fifth episode, chef Franco invites viewers to taste a Peruvian-inspired feast — what he dubs the perfect comfort food. “Crispy and fluffy Baby Arepas with melted cheese and chorizo

bestof ...

are the perfect appetizer,” the episode description promises, “and there’s nothing more comforting than juicy Pollo a la Brasa with crispy skin, smothered in a spicy green sauce. Papas Huancaina with a Spicy Cheese Sauce makes for the perfect side, especially when paired with a Pisco Sour.”

Finally, during the series’ upcoming Season 1 finale, Franco tackles brunch, sharing his recipe for piledhigh Avocado Toast before crafting an elevated take on Tex-Mex Huevos Rancheros, complete with fried tortilla strips then covered in homemade salsa, refried beans, crema and fried eggs.

Bursting with flavor and Franco’s signature flair, the Season 1 finale for “Hot Dish With Franco” airs Saturday, Nov. 4, on Food Network.

Dracula: Here’s another situation where one actor (Bela Lugosi) made a frightening role his trademark, but others actually played it before he did, including in the unauthorized adaptation “Nosferatu.” Christopher Lee and (on both stage and screen) Frank Langella also would become noted for their interpretations of the character.

King Kong: The mightiest ape first reigned supreme in a 1933 stop-motion-animation milestone in which he famously carried a shrieking Fay Wray, then returned in a 1976 version (with Jessica Lange in his massive palm) and director Peter Jackson’s 2005 version (featuring Naomi atts as the apple of Kong’s eye).

Godzilla: Originated in Japan and brought to America in a 1956 version of the initial movie that added scenes featuring Raymond Burr, this giant sea monster has been revived on film numerous times in projects of var ying quality, the most notable of which starred Matthew Broderick (1998) and Br yan Cranston (2014).

The Fly: First played by Al Hedison and later by Jeff Goldblum and Eric Stoltz, this character derived its terror from generating thoughts of what could happen if man tampered with nature.

“Bruce” the Shark: Bruce was the name by which the mechanical creature was known to the cast and crew of “Jaws” (1975) who famously endured many malfunctions while engineers figured out how to get the model working again. Once it was, the scares it provided moviegoers became legendar y ... and pretty much cemented the burgeoning career of a then-novice filmmaker named Steven Spielberg.

The Alien: Based on biomechanical designs by H.R. Giger, the intergalactic enemy that first terrorized a space crew in “Alien” (1979) — then had friends and relatives who continued that campaign in the sequels — surely gave astronaut Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and others much opportunity to test the famous advertising line, “In space, no one can hear you scream.”
