You don’t have to come hungry to Wagoner’s Chili Cook-Off and BBQ Festival — though it might help.
The festival, noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Maple Park, features lots of non-edible attractions, as well. People can paint pumpkins, touch trucks, play games, listen to music. There also will be a car, truck and motorcycle show.
All this is part of what Wagoner Chamber of Commerce secretary Ashley Brown called “a hometown event.”
“It’s not that we only have Wagoner people, but having something where the community comes out, and it’s a good atmosphere for the entire family,” Brown said. “We don’t just have one group of people. It’s fun for everyone.”
This year’s theme is “Red, White, and Blue: Hometown Heroes.”
“This is our way to honor people who have given something to the community,” Brown said. “Red is for emergency responders, white is for educators, blue is for law enforcement.”
Some of these Hometown Heroes will make their vehicles available at a Touch A Truck attraction. Brown said some of the vehicles could include a police car, school bus and ambulance.
Chili and barbecue continue to be the event’s main attractions.
WHAT: Chili Cook-Off and BBQ Festival.
WHEN: Noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. WHERE: Maple Park, Northeast Second and Story streets, Wagoner.
TASTER KITS: $5 for chili; $8 for chili and barbecue.
Brown said last year’s cook-off attracted 19 participants.
“We usually have a lot of return vendors,” Brown said. “We’ll have people who have won over the past couple of years and want to defend their titles.”
Jimmy Cagle, cooking for First Bank and Trust, placed first and won People’s Choice in 2016.
Cagle said he could not pinpoint a secret to his success.
“We just have good chili,” he said. “You do have to be talkative when people come up.”
He said he tries to give chili lovers what they want, including such options as crackers, chips, cheese or onions. He said he also makes versions with and without beans.
“That’s another option for them,” Cagle said.

Expect to be really, really scared — or not so scared — at the House of Doom.
The haunted house can adjust its scariness depending on the visitor. Three Rivers Chapter Guard Dogs motorcycle group will operate the house Saturday through Halloween at the Disabled American Veterans Louis L. Anthis Chapter.
Guard Dogs President Les Shahan said glow sticks can be given to little ones who don’t want to be scared.
“Whenever the glow sticks are coming, our actors don’t jump or scare anyone,” Shahan said. “So it can be scary or non-scary. They (youngsters) can use glow stick, come through and enjoy the haunt without the actors scaring them.”
William Ellis, a regular in the creepy clown room, said the glow sticks are his cue to tone things down.
He said that, when the glow sticks come through, he will pause and be still.
“I may even remove my mask,” Ellis said. “I wear a clown costume, so I take the mask off, so I’m just a silly guy with a clown costume. It’s not as frightful for the kids. If I’m in an area where I’m not in a clown room, I may just hide, and give Mom and Dad a little jolt if the kids are in the front.
WHAT: House of Doom.
WHO: Oklahoma Guard Dogs, Three Rivers Chapter.
WHEN: 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday through Oct. 31. Special preview night Friday. Kids’ night Monday. WHERE: Disabled American Veterans Louis L. Anthis Chapter, 4815 W. Okmulgee Ave. ADMISSION: $5 per person.
He said that on other times, when there are no glow sticks, “we can take it up to the full-blown for the adults.”
Ellis said the adjustable scariness makes the House of Doom unique.
“Most of the spook houses are either are one way or the other. It’s either for kids or for adults,” he said.
Ellis has been with House of Doom since it started six years ago. He said he always seeks a new fright for his clown room.
“Each year I change my costumes up, so then my other costumes become props in my room,” he said. “So you never really know which costume is actually me or which one is from the year prior. Every year, there is a different character in the room, and for each year, there is a different prop added.”
For example, two years ago, Ellis was a “mad butcher,” like Leatherface from “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
“But, instead of regular skin, it was only clown skins that were harvested,” he said.
Shahan said the clown room is a highlight each time.
“He has so many props in there, you don’t know what’s real,” Shahan said. “Next thing you know, he’s jumping out at you.”
The House of Doom’s maze plan changes each year, he said. This year, the house will add a laser room.
“You’re in a room that shoots lasers,” Shahan said “Someone can jump out from underneath them.”
There will be more rooms because there are more volunteer actors, he said.
He said the Guard Dogs hold classes, so actors can learn different ways to scare people.
“You can have a horror scare, you can have a shock scare,” he said, defining a shock scare as “someone coming up behind you.”
He said a horror scare consists of “someone screaming, building up the tension, building up the pressure.”
Shahan said he picks up ideas from haunted house conventions.
“We started out with very little,” Shahan said. “We’ve built up through the years. We actually had to buy storage facilities we bought so much stuff.”
One thing remains constant, however. Shahan said the House of Doom does not allow its actors to touch visitors.
He said the House of Doom got listed and reviewed on the okhauntedhouses.com website.
“We’re getting some good reviews,” he said.
The House of Doom will have a special pre-screening Friday, in which all money goes to DAV. Shahan said there will be no actors or frights involved during the pre-screening. There also will be few frights Monday, Kids’ Night, he said.
House of Doom proceeds benefit the DAV and the Oklahoma National Guard.

Dallas Thompson, last year’s second-place winner, said he makes his Right Spice chili with lean beef and “a lot of secret ingredients.”
He said he grills a chuck steak then grinds the beef.
Brown said a $500 prize will go to best chili. Second place will get $200, third place will get $100. The People’s Choice Chili winner will get $100.
The People’s Choice Barbecue winner will get $500.
Brown said the best decorated booth will win the $50 Ham it Up Award.
“All our cooks are encouraged to decorate their booths according to the theme, which is Hometown Heroes,” she said.
Taster kits are $5 for chili or $8 for chili and barbecue. Proceeds benefit the chamber.
People with taster kits can vote on favorite vehicles, as well as favorite food.
Car show coordinator Mike Hammons said the car, truck and motorcycle show will have its own people’s choice contest. He said the taster kits will have tickets people can use to vote at the show. Last year’s show had 20 to 25 vehicles.
Wagoner Arts Alliance will have 60 pumpkins available for painting and decorating. Alliance member Rhonda Moore said the group also will provide the paint, glitter, hats and other decorating accessories.
The chamber had held the event downtown in past years. However, a July 30 fire that swept through downtown prompted the chamber to move this year, Brown said. Brown said the event was moved to Maple Park for safety reasons.

The elegance and charm of the George Murrell Home by day becomes spooky as dusk turns long shadows into nighttime darkness, with unidentified noises from unknown sources.
Add in expert storytellers in period clothing, and it’s the setting for the annual Halloween fundraiser at Oklahoma’s only antebellum plantation home.
This year, the Murrell Home’s annual Ghost Stories will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27-28. Tickets are $7 per person, and must be purchased in advance. The event is not recommended for children under 8 years of age, said Jennifer Frazee, cultural interpreter with the Murrell Home.
This is the only time of year when people can visit the home after dark, according to Frazee.
“Visitors will be escorted to several of the rooms in the house,

The event takes about an hour and a half from start to finish.
“We will have many of the same great storytellers this year, including Beth Herrington, Jennifer Sparks, Gayle Ross, Donn Brown, and Preston Ware, but we also are adding a new storyteller. Northeastern State University student and volunteer Lisa Bonser will join us in the sitting room to regale visitors with her experiences at the Murrell Home,” Frazee said.
The staff has also changed up some of the locations of the stories so visitors are sure to be in for a fun treat. And some have personal experiences of the frightening kind to share with visitors.
“I have never really had anything spooky happen to me. I scare myself bad enough on my own,” said Frazee, who likes to say she is good at being unobservant when she needs to be.
“[That] or the ghosts like me and don’t want to scare me away! I think it’s the latter.”
Other employees and some members of the Friends of the Murrell Home group have heard strange noises or voices calling when no one is there, or doors have locked on their own accord. Frazee said they still can’t figure out what those orbs were on the security system.
Orbs? What are orbs? Visitors will have to come to find out.
The staff members said they enjoy all the festivities held at the Murrell Home throughout the year, in part because they like to showcase the home and the fashions of the day. But Ghost Stories is one of the favorites because it shares history in a unique way.
“We do Ghost Stories because it is a fun, traditional event,” Frazee said. “It is probably the longest-standing event held at the Murrell Home, and our visitors seem to really enjoy it. It gives us another reason to hang out with company in a fun environment.”
The George M. Murrell Home is at 19479 E. Murrell Home Road in Park Hill, near Tahlequah. Call 918-456-2751 for tickets, or email questions to jfrazee@okhistory.org.

S ometimes actors can take on the traits of their characters.
Take, for instance, Melissa McBride, who plays abused wife-turnedfearless warrior Carol Peletier on AMC’s zombie apocalypse drama “The Walking Dead.” When a snake recently appeared in her home and got stuck to a glue pad used to catch invading pests, the 52-yearold actress took action and without a second thought grasped the slithering critter and freed it from its sticky prison.
“I had a pair of gloves on,” McBride recalls, “and the exterminator guy was helping me and I got to the head part and I just put my fingers right below its mouth, around its neck
and took its tail and took it to a bush and threw it. And it slithered away. And I was like, ‘That’s something Carol would have done. Thanks Carol.’ ”
The eighth season of the hit drama kicks off Sunday, Oct. 22, with its 100th episode, and as has been the case in seasons past, AMC is offering scant few details on what lies ahead, lest spoilers be revealed. But published reports have indicated the new season will refocus the series on small-town sheriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), now sporting a gray beard and cane, evidently the result of a time jump. At least one episode will be devoted to Season 7 villain Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) past and how he became the baseball-bat-
wielding brute responsible for the deaths of two regular characters.
Elsewhere, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) is still pregnant but will not have the child, the time jump apparently not affecting her.
A Muslim character, Abbud (Avi Nash, “Silicon Valley”), is introduced. And as a tribute to the series and its hardcore fans, little in-jokes and nuggets from past seasons will be sprinkled throughout the episodes.
It’s “All-Out War” in the new season, which follows the 20th volume of “The Walking Dead” comic book series, as the Alexandrians and their allies rise up against the totalitarian Saviors. Carol will undoubtedly be involved, but what that means for the character going forward,

Melissa McBride stars in “The Walking Dead,” which opens its eighth season with its 100th episode Sunday on AMC.
McBride was offering few details.
“There is a lot of action this season,” McBride says, “and I’m really excited about some of the things that Carol is getting to do, engaging in this fight with the Saviors. I think this is the most physically challenging season for Carol. I’m excited.”
Such is life around a successful series whose storylines hinge on cliffhangers. In fact, so hush-hush are things surrounding “TWD” these days that on the day of this interview, McBride was noncommital as to whether she was working that day.
“Kind of,” she says with a laugh. “I’m trying to avoid spoilers. If I tell you that I am, then that means Carol’s still alive.”

Lea Michele may not get to sing quite as much with “The Mayor” as she did in “Glee,” but at least for now, that’s fine with her.
The Broadway veteran (“Spring Awakening,” “Les Miserables”) who attained meteoric television fame as glee-club member Rachel Berry has come off a subsequent two-year run in “Scream Queens” to play the principal aide to a rapper turned surprise mayoral winner (Brandon Micheal Hall) in ABC’s new Tuesday comedy. “The Mayor” teams Michele with a fellow Broadway alum, since “Hamilton’s” Daveed Diggs is among its executive producers.
“I don’t know what it is, why I’m drawn to very driven Type A characters,” Michele reflects, “but I think that there is a similarity. Jeremy’s (‘The Mayor’ creator-producer Jeremy Bronson) writing is so incredible, and I think more than anything, it was the musical aspect of this show which attracted me. I’ve been a fan of Daveed’s for such a long time. She is driven, but she is a much more grounded character, which is also something that I was looking for in (my) next project.”
While she understandably cites “Glee” as “one of the most incredible experiences of my entire life,” Michele – who released her second studio album, “Places,” earlier this year – appreciates how “The Mayor” incorporates music in a much different way.
“Using music as just a larger character in the show to deliver these messages and the things that we want to say and that we want to make important, that’s what I love,” she says. “And having that as a part of this project is so inspiring for me. I really, truly believe in it.
“I’ve said to Jeremy a couple of times that I get that same sensation with this group that I did with ‘Glee’ at the very beginning, where you just know you have something very, very, very special, but that really means something. And this cast, they’re so talented. They don’t even know how talented they are, so I think we have something incredibly special on our hands.”

Sedaris
a wink
At different times in her life, Amy Sedaris has been an actress, comedian, cookbook author, expert crafter, waitress and owner/operator of a cupcake business. So it would seem a natural that she would create a TV series that would marry her comedic and homemaking skills in a unique new show starting this week on truTV.
In “At Home With Amy Sedaris,” premiering Tuesday, Oct. 24, the former co-creator and co-star of of the cult comedy series “Strangers With Candy” offers up segments and tips that showcase her diverse homemaking skills, ranging from gutting a fish and making raisin necklaces to cooking without pots and pans and entertaining businessmen, all with tongue firmly in cheek. Each episode will have a theme – such as entertaining the grieving or the craft of lovemaking – and guest stars including Stephen Colbert, Jane Krakowski, Rachel Dratch, Scott Adsit, Sasheer Zamata and Heather Lawless will play either themselves or characters helping out.
A clip made available to journalists gives a good idea of what to expect. In it, Sedaris and guest star Krakowski are working on a crafting project, and when the topic of what glue to use comes up, they break out in song about how to choose the right adhesive for the job.
It’s useful legitimate information delivered with a wink and a smile, and Sedaris says it comes from a lifetime of watching homemaking shows.
“When I was younger ... in North Carolina, there was a local show called ‘At Home with Peggy Mann,’ ” she says. “And it was a woman who had a homemaking show, and it was really boring. And it was black and white and she would sit in a chair and

the cord from her shirt to the cameraman would be attached, and she would talk about back sleeves and have really boring guests on her show. And I remember pointing to that show, the TV, with my mom, and saying, ‘Oh, I am going to grow up and do that show.’ So that’s where the seed was planted.
“And I’m a very domestic person,” she continues. “I always said, ‘I want to do that TV show.’ Then I decided to do a cookbook instead. Then I did a craft book, just trying to figure it out. And then when I came to meet with truTV, it was just time to do it. I felt like this stew had been brewing for all these years, and I think it’s time now to see what it is.”
It’s simultaneously a send-up and an homage to shows like “The Galloping Gourmet,” “Two Fat Ladies” and “Martha Stewart Living.” And while Sedaris considers herself capable in the kitchen, she realizes she’s no Martha Stewart.
In fact, not even close.
“It’s just that her stuff looks so perfect and my stuff doesn’t look perfect,” Sedaris says. “It doesn’t take away from her stuff is great, but it’s also kind of intimidating. It’s like, ‘Really? Whose cupcakes are really going to look like that?’ Or, ‘Whose chicken is really going to come out of the oven looking like that?’ And I just think mine is more realistic. That’s all I’m saying.”

“Stranger Things 2,” www.netflix.com/title/80057281
It’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Ind., are still suffering from the horrors of the Demigorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers has been saved from the Upside Down but a new evil entity looms for those who survived. Paul Reiser, Matthew Modine, Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour are among the cast in the nine new episodes.

In being heard but not seen in his usual time slot for one night, Lucas Till helps to salute one of the top icons of pop music.
The title star of the “MacGyver” reboot lends his voice to CBS’ new, animated special “Michael Jackson’s Halloween” Friday, Oct. 27. Also sort of a tribute to “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” the tale – with Jackson’s estate among its producers – uses many of the late superstar’s tunes, certainly including “Thriller,” as Till and Kiersey Clemons (“Flatliners”) voice characters who meet at a strange hotel on the night of trick-or-treating.
An animated version of Jackson eventually figures into the tale, whose voice cast also features Till’s “MacGyver” colleague George Eads plus fellow CBS stars Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”), Lucy Liu (“Elementary”) and Christine Baranski (“The Good Fight”). Network veterans Alan Cumming (returning later this season in “Instinct”) and Brad Garrett (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) also are heard.
“I’ve always wanted to” do cartoon-voice work, the friendly Till maintains. “I thought, ‘Well, a couple of ”X-Men“ movies (in which he co-starred) have gone by. I’m an established actor now, and I’m going to jump into voiceovers.’ And that’s not how it works. I like doing funny voices and stuff like that, but it wasn’t so simple to get into. And it’s not so simple to actually do; I was spending my weekends doing it, and it’s not as simple as you might think.”
Indeed, Till explains, “Talking to someone face-to-face is a different thing. Doing this, you literally look like you’re in a Disney

show; you’re overdoing it when you do a voiceover, but that’s what works. It’s a totally different animal.” That was even more the case for Till since he wasn’t “with the other people you’re so excited to be on the card with,” recording his lines by himself. He reports that except for Eads, “I haven’t met a single one of them.”
Till readily attests to being a Michael Jackson fan: “Come on, I don’t think you can’t be one. There may be people who are super-fanatical about him, and I don’t reach that level, but I love Michael Jackson music. In this (special), almost anytime you hear anything by him, it’s a mash-up of at least two of his songs. It’s really cool.”
Though he now anticipates spending his Halloweens enmeshed in some sort of action on the set of “MacGyver,” which recently started its second season, Till enjoys spending Oct. 31 in the traditional way whenever he can.
“I try to dress up, obviously,” he says. “In Los Angeles, there’s a Halloween party just about every day in October, so there’s someplace you can dress up and go to. There was a point when I had been to two or three parties already and didn’t want to re-wear the same thing when I was going to see a lot the same people again.
“In the ‘X-Men’ movies, I played Havok, whose suit had a beam focuser on the chest ... so I got a paper plate and took a Sharpie and drew a pattern on it, and then taped it to my chest. And I was Havok for Halloween that year.”

“Shrink,” www.spielbergs.video/shrink
In each two-minute episode of this unique new series from “Girls” alum Alex Karpovsky and designer Teddy Blanks — who work together under the monicker Spielbergs — an artist is interviewed about their experiences in therapy, among them actress Natasha Lyonne (“Orange Is the New Black”), “Girls” creator Lena Dunham, comedian Sarah Silverman, writers Susan Orlean and Gary Shteyngart and director Kimberly Peirce (“Boys Don’t Cry”).

The Penn State Nittany Lions are a college football team known for the linebackers they send to the NFL. That is starting to change, however, as they currently have one of the more potent offenses in the nation, thanks to junior running back sensation Saquon Barkley. The Nittany Lions hope Barkley has another big game when they visit the Ohio State Buckeyes in a classic Big 10 matchup Saturday, Oct. 28 on Fox.
Barkley has been piling up yards in Happy Valley since he arrived as a true freshman in 2015. That season he set a school rushing record for the most rushing yards by a freshman with 1,072. Last season, he captured the school record for most rushing yards by a sophomore with 1,500 exactly. Penn State won the Big Ten last season, but with two losses, were bypassed for the College Football Playoff for Ohio State, whose only loss was to Penn State. After a comeback win against Wisconsin in the conference championship game, Barkley and quarterback Trace McSorley put on quite a show in the Rose Bowl, although they lost 52-49 to the USC Trojans.
The Nittany Lions and Barkley are at it again this season, as he set another school record in tallying up 358 all-purpose yards in the season opener against Akron. He’s already become one of the top prospects in next year’s NFL Draft, should he opt to go. For now, a big game against the Buckeyes looms with plenty of late season significance.

Lisa Ebersole may have “37 Problems” but getting enough protein probably isn’t among them.
Indeed, the creator, producer, director, writer and star of the comedic web series about a 37-year-old singleton facing down the prospect of a life without bearing a child – which recently made its debut on Amazon – made good on her promise to down three raw eggs, shells included, when crowdfunding hit a certain level. And she posted the video of it online.
It’s a feat she doesn’t intend to repeat if the series gets to a Season 2.
“Yeah, let’s hope not,” the Washington, D.C., native says with a laugh. “That was pretty horrible – unexpectedly horrible. I said I was going to do it if we got to like $1,000 in contributions by the end of the day and then I hadn’t really thought about how I was going to do it. And somebody said, ‘Just put it in the blender.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a great idea. I’ll just drink it really fast.’ But I didn’t count on the shells, and the shells are really undrinkable and they get stuck in your mouth, in your throat and it’s just kind of like having sand in your mouth. It’s sort of awful.”
The critically acclaimed series, which had its start in 2016 on

the Seed & Spark crowdfunding and video-on-demand platform, follows the life of Amanda (Ebersole), a career-focused Californian who realizes that at 37 her biological clock is ticking faster than she thought and learns she has only one egg left. So she’s faced with a decision: get it fertilized or frozen, or reconcile herself to life without a child.
Ebersole, an award-winning playwright based in Venice Beach, Calif. (where the series is shot), says the story was inspired by her own life and that of her friends, who all faced the baby question in their late 30s. She believes Amazon is a perfect landing spot for this series, as it deals with mature issues that face her age group.
“This is not a show for YouTubers,” Ebersole says. “This is a show that is in the world of like ‘Transparent’ and ‘Fleabag,’ other Amazon shows about women in their 30s ... that I respect.”
“(I was) not seeing programming or movies that speak to that state of being this age and really focused on your career,” she continues, “not having made it enough yet to have financial resources, but having this biology deadline catching up with you and being faced with ‘What do you do?’ ”
