To become Patsy Cline for a cable movie, Megan Hilty made a deep dive into the countr y-music icon’s life, times and songs. Debuting Saturday, Oct. 19, Lifetime’s made-in-Nashville “Patsy & Loretta” recounts the friendship between Cline and Loretta Lynn (played by Hilty’s fellow Broadway veteran Jessie Mueller, of “Waitress” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”). They were at very different career stages when they met, with Cline well-established and Lynn just starting out and after Cline’s tragic death in a 1963 plane crash, Lynn carried the mantle of accomplished women in countr y for both of them.
“I normally have a really hard time watching myself,” friendly “Smash” alum Hilty says, “but with this, I think because I look so different, I was able to sit back and enjoy it. When they first approached me about it, I said, ‘How much hair is going into the wigs?’ I feel like no matter how good the script and everything else is, if you don’t have a good wig, people are going to be focused on that the entire time. And they told me that was a massive priority.”
Still, Hilty understood there was more to the part than the look and “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces” and “Walkin’ After Midnight” are among the Cline classics she renders. “I didn’t really know about her life,” she
admits, “and the more research I did, the more madly in love I fell with her I read two different books, and I did not like one of them very much because it seemed like a lot of gossip Then I read another biography on her that made sense, and I watched anything of her that I could get my hands on; it’s mostly of her performances and not much patter, so the personal stuff was a lot of guesswork.”
Reuniting Hilty with “Smash” executive producer Neil Meron (in his first solo effort after the passing of his longtime producing colleague Craig Zadan), “Patsy & Loretta” was directed by someone who knew its background: Callie Khouri, the Oscar-winning “ Thelma & Louise” writer who created and produced the drama series “Nashville.” The result, Hilty maintains, was “the most pleasant working experience I’ve ever had. Ever ybody on that set was legitimately upset that it was ending, and you dream of having that kind of environment.”
Cline and Lynn’s daughters – respectively, Julie Fudge and Patsy Lynn Russell – are co-producers of “Patsy & Loretta,” which made Hilty even more determined to get her task on the film right. Cline was “a real person, with a real legacy to uphold, and I wanted to be extremely respectful of that,” Hilty reflects. “I think the script does her justice.”

Supper ’s ready: Memorable food scenes on film
Food: It’s what’s for dinner – both in reality and on screen.
In fact, filmdom has supplied many memorable food-related moments over the years, be they in eating and cooking scenes or even in unconventional situations. The following is a list of a few we think are the best.
“Goodfellas” (1990): Those wiseguys sure know how to eat. That’s the takeaway from the prison scene of Martin Scorsese’s mob classic, in which Paulie (Paul Sorvino), Henry (Ray Liotta) and other inmates debate the correct preparation of tomato sauce with, among other meats, pork because “that’s the flavor.” You can practically smell the onions sauteing through the screen.
“Big Night” (1996): This ‘50s-set drama about two brothers (Stanley Tucci, Tony Shalhoub) trying to keep their New Jersey Italian restaurant afloat introduces us to timpano, an elaborate baked pasta dish that apparently when done right is a genuine culinary experience. The dish looked luscious but the eatery still folded.
“The Great Outdoors” (1988): Who can forget “the Old 96-er”? That’s the 96-ounce (aka six pound) hunk of prime aged beef that John Candy’s vacationing family man Chet attempts to consume so he can get his meal for free. This may be the first instance of meat sweats in a major motion picture.
“Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977): Wyoming’s Devils Tower plays a prominent role in Steven Spielberg’s classic about alien visitation, both as a possible landing site and the subject of
entranced character creates at the dinner table in front of his puzzled family, the result of telepathic communication with extraterrestrials.
“National Lampoon’s Animal House” (1978): Speaking of mashed spuds, how about Bluto’s (John Belushi) imitation of a pimple? Or the food fight? Not exactly food photography at its finest but the gross-out factor is certainly present in John Landis’ raucous comedy about a rowdy ‘50s college fraternity.
“Waitress” (2007): When she couldn’t say it with words, small-town server Jenna (Keri Russell) expressed her pent-up anger and frustration through her pies, with creations such as the “I Can’t Have No Affair Because It’s Wrong and I Don’t Want Earl to Kill Me Pie,” which is vanilla custard with banana – but hold the banana. Much food porn to be had here.

Loosely based on Rupert Murdoch’s family media empire, this blistering black comedy recently picked up an Emmy for its writing in Season 1, but “Succession” has really broken out in its sophomore outing as a major new hit for HBO, thanks to the performances by a stunning core ensemble, as well as such A-list guest stars as Holly Hunter and Cherry Jones. Season 2 wraps tonight, with a third season already greenlit. Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong and Sarah Snook star.
9 p.m. on KTUL The Rookie Seamus Dever and Jon Huertas, who played Detectives Ryan and Esposito on Nathan Fillion’s mystery series “Castle,” guest star in the new episode “The Bet,” which sees Nolan (Fillion) navigating some shifting dynamics with Jessica and Grace (Sarah Shahi, Ali Larter) while working a high-stakes case involving an undercover Homeland Security agent. Elsewhere, Officer Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) learns a surprising bit of information about Wesley (Shawn Ashmore). Melissa O’Neil and Eric Winter also star.
