Top steak and barbecue cooks will be smokin’ to help the Bedouin Shrine Temple this weekend.
The Shrine will host a Bedouin Brew & Bar-B-Que on Saturday and Sunday at Love-Hatbox Sports Complex. Proceeds benefit the Shrine Temple’s general fund.
Bedouin Shriner Scott Seretean said festivities include a Saturday contest sanctioned by the Steak Cookoff Association and a Sunday contest sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and Oklahoma Barbecue Society.
However, people can enter on the mornings of the contests.
“Anybody can enter any of this,” Seretean said. “There is a $5,500 purse broken up into 10 places.”
Seretean said the Grand Champion barbecue cook gets $1,000, and Reserve Grand gets $500.
Registration for the barbecue contest is $225. Registration for the steak contest is $150, or $100 for those also entered in the barbecue contest.
People just wanting to enjoy the aromas and camaraderie also are

But, how about all that barbecue and steak getting smoked in the contests?
Seretean said the cooks will be smoking for the contest, not the public.

Don’t feel intimidated if you cannot identify all the airplanes at this weekend’s Hatbox Memorial Giant Scale Fly-In.
Event director Gaines Smith said “pilots” can offer plenty of information.
“We understand more about the planes than probably most full-scale pilots do,” Smith said. “We go out and we research the project. We want to know the history behind the airplane — who manufactured it, who flew it, what year it was flown, whether it was World War I, World War II, Vietnam, Korea, a modern jet.”

Giant Scale Fly-In will be Friday and Saturday at Love-Hatbox Sports Complex. The fly-in is sponsored by the Three Rivers Area Model Plane Society, or TRAMPS.
Admission is free.
Smith said the Fly In, now in its 16th year, attracts 30 to 40 model airplane pilots. They’ll fly 60 to 80 planes.
“This is a type of event that’s attractive to spectators any time during the day,” Smith said, adding that up

to five planes will fly at a time.
He said the event could draw hundreds of spectators.
He said giant scale planes feature wingspans of 80 inches or larger; giant scale biplanes have spans of 60 inches or larger.
“We’ll have everything from World War I warbirds all the way to modern jet warbirds — Vietnam era, World War II era,” he said. “When we finish an airplane and get them in the air, we put a little piece of
history in the air.”
Smith said he just finished building a one-fifthscale A-1H Skyraider, a Vietnam-era Navy carrier.
He said he’s been flying model planes since age 12.
“I’ll soon be 70 years old,” he said. “As a kid, aviation was very interesting to all of us boys. Back then, you had to build everything that you flew. I started out building stick and tissue airplanes. As I got older, I got into the radio control stuff. And I kept doing it after I retired here.”
Smith said he has no clue how many he has built.
“Hundreds,” he said. “I’ve done everything from civilian planes to prop jobs.”
He said model jet planes intimidate him.
However, he said people could see “some good-sized jets and actual turboprops” at the fly-in. A turboprop uses a turbine to power the propeller.
Ken West, who retired from the Air Force, said he converted a gas-powered model plane to into a SIAI
Marchetti turboprop.
“The Marchetti is an Italian light aircraft designed as a military trainer,” West said. “It was also used as a light combat aircraft for smaller air forces. There were about 2,000 Marchettis made.”
West said he likes flying jet-powered model planes.
“Most of the planes down there are propeller-driven planes,” he said. “This is propeller-driven also, but it is powered by a jet engine.”
He said the plane, which has a 120-inch wingspan, will sound “almost exactly like a jet airplane.”
“You won’t hear the gas piston engine noise you do on most of the planes,” he said. “You’ll see some of the propeller turning, but it won’t make the propeller noise the other planes do. The jet noise overpowers it.”
He described the noise as the same “whoosh” one hears at an airport, but not as loud.

away,” he said. “But people are welcome to come out and if they (cooks) offer the public a taste, they can do that.”
He said each steak contestant will be given two pieces of meat to cook, “so they’re all cooking the exact same pieces of meat.”
“The steak contest will allow gas or charcoal grill,” Seretean said. “KCBS rules are a little more strict because it has to be cooked with wood.”
Seretean said visitors can meet and chat with professional cooks, including some who have been on the Destination America TV show “BBQ Pitmasters.”
“I know for sure that David Bouska, who is Butcher BBQ, is going to be here,” Seretean said. “He’ll be happy to take pictures with folks, sign autographs, whatever. He took third place in the finals of ‘Pitmaster’ the year they gave away $50,000.”
The cooks bring in impressive rigs, Seretean said.
“Some of these guys come out with big trailers with smokers hanging on the back of them,” he said.

Antiques, collectibles and new, gently-used merchandise among items for sale
By Renee Fite Daily Press Correspondent
Anyone who enjoys a bargain and shopping for items not available anyplace else will find opportunities for both at the annual Oklahoma Home and Community Education Clubs Fall Bazaar and Flea Market Saturday, Oct. 14, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., in the Cherokee County Community Building, 908 S. College Ave.
Those with quality items for sale may find booth space is still available.
“It’s open to anyone and booths are available for $20 each, A booth space includes two tables and a backboard,” said Ann Lamons, event chair.
Setup will be Friday, Oct. 13, 2-7 p.m. Arts and crafts, antiques, collectibles and new and gently-used merchandise are among the items vendors will have available at the OHCE fundraiser.
“Some ladies have a lot of handmade craft items, dishes, shoes and purses, essential oils and handmade soaps – a variety of items of really good quality and very clean are available every time,” Lamons said.
The event is so popular many vendors request the same booth space at the spring and fall flea markets, according to Lamons.
“We have people from Stilwell, and as far as Arkansas, who regularly participate,” she said.
One vendor this time is moving and has two tables of glassware and other
home items.
“It’s always a lot of fun,” Lamons said. “I’ve always had a booth and a lot of what I sell are potted plants. If we have booth space left, I’ll have one this time.”
Since 2006, Lamons has coordinated the event, taking over after Jo Ann Carter stepped down.
“I like to meet all the people and we try to get them interested in the clubs’ projects and maybe get new members,” said Lamons, who became a member after retiring.
The OHCE members’ table will feature handmade items.
“Money from that table and the fundraiser itself go to OHCE to help fund projects throughout the year,” Lamons said.
Heather Winn, Oklahoma State University Extension family consumer science educator, said the money earned by the organization is used for community service projects.
“They have used the money to do projects for Hope House, Help-In-Crisis, Oklahoma School for the Blind and the Infusion Clinic,” said Winn. “It’s a really fun event, and the food is great. We’ll have cinnamon rolls and biscuits and gravy for breakfast.”
No food vendors will be allowed in the booths. The OHCE clubs will have the kitchen open, serving biscuits and gravy, homemade cinnamon rolls, chili, beans, cornbread, hot dogs, brownies

OHCE membership is open to everyone interested in learning a variety of crafts and skills with the option of volunteering to help with community service projects. The different Cherokee County OHCE clubs meet monthly, some in homes and some at the OSU Extension office.
The OSU Extension website defines OHCE as “a program of continuing education in all aspects of home and community life with the ultimate mission to educate its members to be well-informed and able to handle change in their homes and communities.” Through its relationship with the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, OHCE presents research-based information to its members.
Monthly educational lessons, leadership development and community service projects provide OHCE members an opportunity to apply this research-based information in their homes and communities. OHCE is in a unique position to help individual members and their families and communities develop a higher level of living through education.
No other organization is better poised to develop community leaders and informed citizens through research based educational programs, Winn pointed out. OHCE is a statewide and county based organization. County Extension educators and family and consumer sciences educators serve as advisers to county HCE organizations.
The Cooperative Extension Service is based at Oklahoma State University, with offices and Extension educators serving each county. District and state Cooperative Extension specialists and supervisors work with county Extension educators and the OHCE program. Working in a cooperative effort, OHCE members and Extension educators identify local issues facing families. These issues become the basis for OHCE educational programming and efforts are made to help families solve these problems.

“White Famous” may be principally Jamie Foxx’s story, but it rings true for Jay Pharoah, too.
The “Saturday Night Live” alum plays a fictionalized version of Foxx in his early professional days in “White Famous,” a seriocomic Showtime series developed by Tom Kapinos (“Californication”) and premiering Sunday, Oct. 15. The show’s Floyd Mooney (Pharoah) is a comedian who has to determine how much of himself he’s willing to forsake to attain fame, especially after a video of him dressing down a major movie producer goes viral and suddenly puts his career on the fast track.
Though Foxx – an executive producer and recurring guest star on “White Famous” – is the show’s main source, Pharoah maintains the process has been
“very collaborative” and also reflects his own experiences.
“It’s the story of a young comic who’s getting a chance to cross over into the mainstream and be known by the world,” Pharoah says, “and I immediately connected with the material.
As soon as I saw it, I thought, ‘Yeah, this is me.’ I could see myself as Floyd Mooney.
“I know how it is doing those $50(-per-gig) rooms, and you’re doing six of those a night and trying to build up while you’re just trying to survive. I used to work at Burlington Coat Factory, and that was the last job I had before everything started taking off. I did a semester at VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University), then I was pretty like, ‘Ah, forget this. Let’s get on the road and grind it out.’ There are direct parallels between Jamie Foxx’s coming-up and mine that are just undeniable.”
The earlier arrival of Showtime’s “I’m Dying Up Here” may have helped prepare audiences for “White Famous,” Pharoah concurs: “There’s definitely an avenue for shows that want to show the grittiness of being a stand-up comedian, and not just being funny all the time. Of course, comedians all joke around, but some things happen behind closed doors that we don’t talk about.”
On that note, Floyd struggles to keep his relationships with his son (Lonnie Chavis, one of Sterling K. Brown’s younger alter egos on “This Is Us”) and the youngster’s mother (Cleopatra Coleman, “The Last Man on Earth”) on solid footing. “In this business, you have to stay grounded, no matter what,” Pharoah reasons. “I still visit my grandma, and I’m really tight with my family. My sister’s my manager, and that’s not just because she’s

family; she went to school for mass communications, and she knows how to navigate that world.”
Pharoah explains that he left “SNL” – on which he became known for such impersonations as President Barack Obama, Will Smith and Kanye West – at the end of its 2015-16 season because “it just felt like it was time.” He deems “White Famous” a “transitional” project for him, but also considers it more than that in certain ways.
“I really believe there’s going to be a lot of water-cooler conversation about this show on Monday mornings,” says Pharoah, “just because the things we’re bringing to light are things that have been known, but people have stayed hushed about it. Or, if people have experienced them and wanted to be vocal about it, they haven’t had the outlet to broadcast it to millions of people. I can’t wait.”

If Erika Christensen and Kyra Sedgwick truly appear sisterly in “Ten Days in the Valley,” there’s good reason.
Also an executive producer (along with series creator Tassie Cameron) of ABC’s new Sunday drama, Emmy-winning “Closer” alum Sedgwick specifically wanted “Parenthood” veteran Christensen to play her half-sister in the mystery about a television producer’s (Sedgwick) desperate search for her missing daughter.
“Oh, well, look at us,” Christensen says with a laugh when asked about being “related” to her fellow star, a professed fan of hers since the movie “Traffic.”
Now a parent of a daughter herself, Christensen says she related easily to the plight of Sedgwick’s character from the moment she learned of the project. “When I first met Kyra and Tassie, my baby was four months old,” she recalls, “and one of the first things that I told them was that this (premise) was horrifying ... as it should be.”
As a relatively new mom, Christensen – who proved formidable on the obstacle course last spring on a celebrity edition of NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” – admits she’s still feeling out the balance between work and her own parenthood.
“I feel very fortunate to be able to work and not work, and to have more of a choice in that than a lot of people do,” she reflects.
“It’s a wonderful struggle. And we do all have that, and that, I very much relate to. Obviously, I had to choose to be away from (my baby) to shoot this show. And I’m very glad that I did, because I’m really proud of this show.
“Ultimately, I think that the goal is to just be the best version of yourself absolutely possible for the sake of this little person,” Christensen concludes, “and trying to show your best self to your little person, trying to set a good example. Although she may not remember that.”

With the summer in our rear-view mirror and fall in full splendor, you may be thinking about taking a trip. A few shows on basic cable this week have a few suggestions where to go for the foodie who likes to roam.
Sunday, Oct. 15, on Cooking Channel, “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” heads to Dallas to showcase some of the best Texas cuisine the city has to offer, including the barbecued brisket, the fried chicken, a pecan ball and a classic fruitcake.
Barbecue is also what’s on the menu in Louisville, Ky., in the Tuesday, Oct. 17, episode of Cooking’s “Big Bad BBQ Brawl,” where host Shannon Ambrosio challenges a local pitmaster to a bourbon and bacon brawl, tasking the rival crew to make it in the style of a pizza. The results here have got to be interesting.
Also that night on Travel is a doubleheader of “Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations,” in which host Andrew Zimmern visits Madrid to dine on the sweet and succulent roasted piglet, fried calamari sandwich and tapas; and Prague to sample a lager-marinated pork knuckle, mushroom soup and lots of dumplings. European comfort food at its finest.
If your tastes run to the even more exotic, the Sunday episode of CNN’s “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” takes the well-traveled host to Lagos, Nigeria, a oncedangerous city in the midst of a Renaissance, to check out the culture, music and, of course, the cuisine, which is very beef-centric. There is also the ubiquitous local specialty, the pounded yam.

For French cuisine, there is the Saturday, Oct. 21 (check local listings), installment of PBS’ “Moveable Feast With Fine Cooking,” which finds host Pete Evans in Cadenet, France, to see how the fleur de sel, a coveted salt used as a flavoring on French food, is harvested from seawater. Those who prefer their dining well after dark will want to check out the Thursday, Oct. 19, episode of Cooking’s “Late Night Eats,” where host Jordan Andino heads to Vancouver, British Columbia, to check out several afterhours hotspots.
Josh Denny is in a Halloween mood in a themed episode of Food Network’s “Ginormous Food” on Friday, Oct. 20, where he chows down on a 16-inch skull-shaped bowl of seafood, pasta and rice in New York City; and takes on the Super-Stack Maniac sandwich in Atlanta, a colossal dish that consists of burger patties, Texas toast, American cheese, fried eggs and bacon. Pass the cholesterol medication, please.
And Roger Mooking is literally all over the place in the Wednesday, Oct. 18, edition of Cooking’s “Man’s Greatest Food,” as he heads to New York, Chicago and the West Coast in search of the country’s best pizza. Not bad work if you can get it.

Since its 2003 premiere, “NCIS” has had its share of agent turnover, but its latest new-but-familiar face will be staying for a while.
After doing such other shows as “ER,” the U.S. version of “Prime Suspect” and the streaming “Goliath” – plus numerous movies – Maria Bello joins the enduringly and globally popular CBS adventure-drama in its Tuesday, Oct. 17, episode. She’s made a three-year deal to play Jacqueline “Jack” Sloane, a skilled forensic psychologist brought to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service’s Washington, D.C., headquarters by Director Leon Vance (series regular Rocky Carroll, who also directed Bello’s introductory story).
“Let’s just talk about Mark Harmon first,” Bello says of the “NCIS” star who ranks as one of television’s most popular actors as team leader Leroy Jethro Gibbs. “As soon as you meet this man, he is so incredibly warm and open and present, and that’s what he brings to Gibbs. You can tell he comes from sports in a lot of ways, because he’s the captain of the team. We are all motivated by him, and he’s an incredibly strong leader, but he never tells anyone what to do.”
Actually, that mirrors the relationship between Gibbs and newcomer Jack, since she’s virtually the only person in the unit who doesn’t answer to him. Bello explains that Jack has a past association with Vance: “We don’t know how they know each other, we just know they have a history. She’s the first person in some time who doesn’t report to Gibbs, she only reports to Vance ... so there’s a really mature exchange of ideas and respect. They’re equals in a way.”

“The Day I Met El Chapo,” www.netflix.com/ title/80184569
Mexican actress Kate del Castillo (“La Reina del Sur,” “American Family”) produced and stars as herself in this three-part biographical drama that tells her side of the story, of how her random tweet led to association and an eventual meeting with one of the world’s most notorious drug lords, Sinaloa Cartel chief Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Drops Friday.

While she typically plays strong women, Bello maintains Jack is a different sort of part for her. “She’s someone who smiles a lot because she thinks her job is exciting all the time. To play that kind of enthusiasm is really fun – and at the same time, she’s really smart and really elegant.
“What’s interesting about doing a series,” adds Bello, “is that the character develops through every episode. You’ll see that in one episode, I do something with lollipops in my office. It’s just something I came up with on that day, but the writers saw that and built on top of it about what it could mean. I don’t even know about my (character’s) past, though I do know that she did a couple of tours in Afghanistan. It’s a constant revelation and surprise, and that makes me excited about going to work every day.”
Bello has had plenty of activity lately, even without “NCIS.” Beyond her humanitarian efforts to help women in Haiti and Darfur, she’s a published author (“Whatever ... Love Is Love: Questioning the Labels We Give Ourselves”), she’s made a virtual-reality piece about female warriors in Iraq (“Sun Ladies”), she’s executive-produced and co-starred in two movies (“G.L.O.,” “The Journey Is the Destination”), and she’s currently negotiating deals for another film and another television series.
Still, Bello says she “was really in awe” when she was offered her “NCIS” role. “I didn’t know how huge the show was,” she allows. “I knew that everybody I know watches it, and that it’s my parents’ favorite show, but I didn‘t know it was the most-watched show in the world. As soon as I said, ‘Yes’ ... well, my whole life has changed.”
Jonathan Groff (“Glee”) and Holt McCallany (“Sully”) star as FBI profilers circa 1979, who interview incarcerated serial killers to understand how such criminals think, then apply that knowledge to ongoing cases. Based on the book of the same title by former FBI profiler John Douglas, the series also stars Anna Torv (“Fringe”), Hanna Gross (“I Used to Be Darker”) and Cotter Smith (“The Americans”).

“37 Problems,” www.amazon.com
Debuting Tuesday on Amazon after a year on Seed & Spark, this critically acclaimed web series from Los Angeles playwright and filmmaker Lisa Ebersole tells the story of Amanda (Ebersole), a struggling, single 37-year-old screenwriter who learns her biological clock is ticking faster than she thought and she has only one egg left. She’s left with the options of freezing it, finding a mate to fertilize it or do nothing and live a life different from what she imagined.

Kyrie Irving has a new team. After six seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the All-Star point guard asked to be traded, and back in July, the Cavs obliged; sending him to the Boston Celtics in part of a three-team deal that also featured Isaiah Thomas heading for Cleveland. Irving and the Celtics open the new NBA season in dramatic fashion when they visit his former team Tuesday, Oct. 17 on TNT.
A one-and-done college phenomenon, Irving spent one season at Duke and decided to forgo his other three years of eligibility and enter the NBA Draft in 2011. Cleveland had just come off a dismal 19-63 season (their first without LeBron James who had signed the previous summer with Miami), and was looking to rebuild. They took Irving with the first overall pick in the draft, as well as Tristan Thompson with the fourth pick. Progress came slowly, but Irving did earn Rookie of the Year honors in 2012 and was the NBA All-Star Game’s MVP two years later in 2014. Prior to the 2014-15 season, James opted to return to Cleveland, who also
acquired Kevin Love, and “The Big Three” in Cleveland was born. The result was three straight trips to the NBA Finals, all against the Golden State Warriors, and a championship in 2016; the city’s first in any pro sport in 52 years.
But Irving said he wanted a new environment, and that’s what’s he’s got in Boston, who played the Cavs in the Eastern Conference Finals this past season.

After someone tries to whack Javier, though, Letty is forced to ponder whether a “normal” life is even possible for them.
MONDAY
After Sun Mei and Red (Sydney Viengluang, Natalie Jongjaroenlarp) abruptly disappear without explanation, 10K (Nat Zang) and his fellow heroes are confronted with a difficult yet crucial decision: Do they abandon their friends and continue on their journey to Newmerica or mount a search for the two women, knowing that it could prove to be a time-wasting wild goose chase. Russell Hodgkinson and Kellita Smith also star.

TUESDAY
8 p.m. on KOTV Bull

At first blush, Holden Ford and Bill Tench seem to be an unusual match for FBI agents.
While Ford is young, a college grad and seemingly wet behind the ears, Tench is middle-aged, old school and a grizzled veteran of the law enforcement wars.
But both are analytical, thoughtful and fascinated with the workings of a serial killer’s mind. And as played by Jonathan Groff (“Looking,” “Glee”) and Holt McCallany (“Sully,” “Blue Bloods”), they’re the central characters in the new Netflix crime drama “Mindhunter.”
Set in 1979, the series follows the two agents with the Bureau’s Behavioral Sciences Unit as they interview incarcerated serial killers to understand how these criminals think, then apply that knowledge to ongoing investigations. While their boss Shepard (Cotter Smith, “The Americans”) isn’t crazy about their methods, they get help from Bureau psychologist Wendy (Anna Torv, “Fringe”) and Ford’s girlfriend Debbie (Hannah Gross, “Unless”), a doctoral student.
The series is based on the book “Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit” by John E. Douglas, on whose experiences with the FBI it is loosely based.
For McCallany, the series reunited him with David Fincher, with whom he collaborated on the 1999 drama “Fight Club,” and also allowed him to delve into a subject he found fascinating.

“You could spend a lifetime researching this subject,” the actor says. “What are the root causes? What are the early warning signs? What are the common attributes men have that commit these horrible crimes? And I say men because in 99 out of 100 cases we’re talking about men. And so understanding what the problems are in a particular serial killer’s childhood – whether it’s abandoned by the father, brought up by an abusive mother. Was he a guy who liked to start fires as a child or torture animals? And every case is different and every one of these kind of their own brand of insanity, if you will.”
Viewers will certainly recognize the names of the killers interviewed, such as in the first two episodes California murderer Edmund Kemper, but Netflix was reluctant to release others. The series has the tagline “How do you get ahead of crazy if we don’t know how crazy thinks,” which one could also say is the mission statement of Tench and Ford.
So confident is Netflix in this show that it’s already renewed it for a second season. That suits McCallany just fine as he’s thinking it has the legs to go five.
“I think it’s going to be a really interesting show,” he says, “because it’s very cerebral, it’s very psychological and it’ll be the only show in the history of American TV where you follow two FBI agents for five seasons and neither of them ever pulls his gun and says, ‘Stop! FBI.’ That’s not what our show is.”
