A Grand Winter Ball offers an elegant break from winter’s chill.
Talk of the Town, a big band orchestra from Norman, will perform for the ball at 7 p.m. Saturday at Legacy on Main Street, Eufaula.
Tickets are $20 for the concert and dancing, or $45 for those also wanting to dine on heavy hors d’oeuvres and desserts.
Venue owner Karen Weldin said the ball may seem familiar to longtime lake lovers. She said Fountainhead State Lodge, a sweeping Miami Beach-type hotel that used to be at Lake Eufaula, held formal winter dances.
“It was a winter ball every year,” Weldin said. “Since I opened Legacy, I’ve had several local people tell me about that, and wish they had something like that. So I said, ‘Okay, we’ll have a Winter Ball at the Legacy.”
Linda Pruitt recalled going to the Fountainhead dances in the early 1980s.
“It was very elegant, very well-attended,” Pruitt recalled. “I would say it was very upscale, very dressy.

I think every one of them had big band music, so it was great for dancing. It was a very enjoyable evening out in the middle of winter.”
She said a professional photographer would take pictures of couples.
“ We decorated it to the hilt,” she said, adding that there was a different theme each year.
“String of Pearls was one theme,” she said. “We decorated it with a lot of pearls.”

Hear the past, present and future of the blues tonight at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
Blues musician/historian Dr. Harold Aldridge joins Selby Minner and Blues on the Move, plus newcomer James “Bebo” McDaniel will perform at 7 p.m. Thursday, part of the monthly AMMP Showcase. The Association of Muskogee Musicians and Performers, dedicated to promoting area musicians and music events, presents the showcase on the first Thursday of each month.
Minner said she’s new to the AMMP group and happy to work with the showcase. She said she and Dan “Oklahoma Slim” Ortiz will perform together.
“I know there’s a tremendous amount of music here in the region, and I always think it’s good when we

all work together, very important,” she said. “It builds community. I went to the showcases recently, and the music was great. I’m just happy to be part of it.”
At 73, Aldridge combines the history of blues with his story.
“My basic concept has been to define how it got started and the history of it through field hollows, work songs and all, then how it moved from that into a musical form,” he said.
Aldridge lived that history while growing up in Taft.
“Guys I grew up under were doing what I do today, but they didn’t call it that,” Aldridge said. “They were just playing music on the front of these bars and joints, looking for tips. Or they played in these barrel houses, and you could go there any time of day and night and buy you some liquor.”
He said he listened to their stories, as well as their music.
“Sometimes, I was standing between my daddy’s legs, and I had my elbows on both his knees, looking up at these people and going, ‘boy, they’re having fun,’” he said.
Aldridge said he didn’t know how important the music was when he started playing it.
“It was something I did for myself,” he said. “I was just playing for myself, then people started saying ‘hey, why don’t you come play for this
house party.’ And I’d play, and they’d give me several pieces of fried chicken and some bread.”
Aldridge grew up to become psychology professor at Northeastern State University. Now retired from NSU, he has played blues “informances” through the Oklahoma Humanities Council and Friends of Rentiesville Blues.
“Now people are wanting to know,” he said, adding that telling the stories is “ what makes it legitimate.”
James “Bebo” McDaniel, 25, has a McAlester area blues trio, Bebo and the Evil-Doers.
McDaniel said his style, a blend of Freddie King and Jimi Hendrix, can get “out there.”
“But we play the classic stuff, too,” he said.
He said he can contribute a “young face and a new energ y” to blues.
“I got into the music about a year or two after
my father passed,” he said. “I’m adopted, so I didn’t know my grandpa was also a blues player.”
Minner said she’s known McDaniel since he was about 12, when his mother brought him to Rentiesville blues programs.
“When he was 21, he started coming on a regular basis, and he’s been well received, Minner said.
McDaniel said Selby and the late blues great D.C. Minner taught him nearly everything he knows about music.
“I took some lessons here and there, but I never really picked it back up until I started hanging around them,” McDaniel said. “I played the blues festival they have every year. I star ted playing drums when they had a jam there a few years ago.”

tests, Pruitt recalled.
“One couple in particular came from Tulsa every year,” she said. “You could tell they obviously had lessons. They always won. It was just really nice.”
Ball-goers don’t have to move like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers — or those two Tulsans — to appreciate the music Saturday at the Grand Winter Ball.
Weldin said there will be plenty of tables where people can just sit and listen to the music.
“Whether people dance or not, that’s the real message I want to get out there — don’t be afraid if you don’t know how to do any ballroom dancing,” she said. “Just come and listen to the music. They are talented musicians.”
Talk of the Town Orchestra founder Joe Windes said the group seeks to keep big band music alive. He said the group has played for most of the ballroom dance clubs in Oklahoma.
Windes said the band’s repertoire is “about 6,000 tunes.”
“So we can play for a while,” he said. “That encompasses all kinds of programs. Of course we can do big bands, jazz, swing, all the ballroom dances, the Latins. We can also do entire programs of gospel or Dixieland or Christmas.”
It’s all up to the audience.
“We do take requests,” Windes said. “We’re about the only big band that will do that. We kind of depend on the local venue to tell us what they want.”
Windes, who plays saxophone and clarinet, is one of two original Talk of the Town members involved.
“But we get new people all the time,” he said. “The most amazing thing is there are a lot of young people who are good musicians who want to play the big band stuff. We can keep going.”

Numerous classes, rehearsals, performances, and community events take place in the NSU Jazz Lab in downtown Tahlequah.
By Renee Fite Daily Press Correspondent
Jazz music brings talented musicians to perform and aspiring Northeastern State University students to compete in Tahlequah every year at the NSU Jazz Lab. It’s not unusual to be walking past the Jazz Lab, 315 N. Muskogee Ave., and hear live jazz music from a class or rehearsal in session pouring out as someone opens a door to enter or exit. And Tahlequah is home to a jazz festival that brings international performers here.
In the 1960s, Muskogee band teachers Jack Romine and Lowell Lehman also had student jazz combos that rehearsed after school and performed for special occasions. The love of jazz music spread to NSU when Lehman started the university’s first jazz band.
According to the “History of Jazz at NSU” on the NSU website, Lehman, now a professor emeritus of music at NSU, is credited with founding the Green Country Jazz Festival in the 1970s. This has brought internationally-renowned jazz artists to the region for over four decades. In 2010, Leh-

man was inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame for service in jazz education.
Incredible musicians have passed through the NSU Jazz Lab since its inception in 1992 by former NSU President Roger Webb. He wanted a place where jazz students could practice the craft and other NSU students could come together in an informal atmosphere to enjoy live jazz. Joe Davis, the university’s instructor of jazz at the time, was consulted. Webb and his staff developed a plan that led to the design and construction of the NSU Jazz Lab in 1993.
Today, a picture of Davis performing on a saxophone hangs in the balcony overlooking the Jazz Lab stage.
In his honor, the online history account continues, Webb placed a neon
sign over the stage door. It simply read “Joe’s Place.”
The memories of Davis and his students Jacob Farinelli and Mike Antle, members of the River City Music Show, who all died within a year of each other in 1994 or 1995, are secure with those who follow jazz in Oklahoma and the region.
Moving forward with the program, saxophonist Will Campbell from the University of North Texas was hired to lead the NSU Jazz Studies program, followed by saxophonist Arthur White, then Dr. Tommy Poole. It is currently under the direction of Dr. Clark Gibson, a saxophonist, composer and arranger.
With each new director, the jazz studies program grew, as did opportunities for students.
Campbell was instrumental in creating Oklahoma’s only undergraduate jazz degree program while at NSU. White established a second large jazz ensemble, numerous jazz combos and added a course in jazz education and pedagogy. He also produced Okla-

homa’s first internationally-released and critically-acclaimed university jazz CDs: “Hour of the Pearl” with guest artist Scott Wendholt, “Appointment in Milano” with jazz legend Bobby Watson, and “The Point” with guitarist Henry Johnson.
Under Poole’s direction, the university expanded the jazz curriculum to include Jazz Theory I, II, and III. Poole also started having the NSU Jazz Ensemble perform twice annually at the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame in Tulsa, which is considered one of the region’s premiere jazz venues. The NSU Jazz Ensemble was selected as the Collegiate Honor Jazz Band by Oklahoma Music Educators Association in 2012, and released its sixth CD, “On Cue-the Music of Seamus Blake,” to critical acclaim that same year. In 2015, the NSU Jazz Ensemble released its first student jazz combo CD, “Out Front.”
The newest Music Facilities Manager of both the Jazz Lab and the Center for the Performing Arts is Ashley Sage.
“This includes event and concert planning, managing rentals of both spaces, event set-up and tear down, maintenance of all equipment, and running sound and lights for all events,” said Sage. “At the Jazz Lab, I have a staff of two student workers who help me. Their names are Ciera Steen and Yudelki Vargas.”
Events that happen in the Jazz Lab include NSU Music Department faculty and student concerts and recitals, guest artist recitals, community events, fundraisers, and more.
“Coming up on March 4, we have the annual Green Country Jazz Festival Judge’s Jam,” Sage said. “The Jazz Lab is also the home of all of the NSU Jazz Studies courses, including theory courses, improvisational classes, student combo rehearsals, studio courses, and private lessons. Several of the student teachers for the NSU Community Music Academy teach private lessons in the Jazz Lab during the week as well.”
The Jazz Lab is available to rent for any university, community, or private event.
“Any given week, we might have every type of event from banquets to concerts to baby showers,” Sage said. “Every rental includes Jazz Lab staff available on-site to run any technical needs such as sound engineering or stage lighting and to help with set-up for your event.”

D ebuting as a Golden Globes host for the awards’ 75th anniversary, Seth Meyers knows much more is involved than celebrating the past and giving out trophies.
The NBC “Late Night” host and “Saturday Night Live” alum is keenly aware of one of the main subjects that’s been on the entertainment world’s collective mind in recent weeks and months: harassment. He admits he’s figuring out how he’ll deal with that in front of a large room of television and movie personalities at the year’s first major showbiz-awards event, which his home network will televise Sunday, Jan. 7, from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
“I don’t know if we’ll be the bellwether” for how
BY BY GEORGE DICKIE
award hosts address the conversation that has dominated the industry lately, Meyers reflects, “but certainly, we are aware that we are the first to go out. The most important thing for us is striking a balance in talking about what everybody is talking about, away from the Golden Globes, while also making sure that we use the night to celebrate all the great work that’s been done.
“Obviously, this has not been a great year for Hollywood insofar as what we’ve learned about things that were happening,” adds Meyers, “but it also was a great year insofar as the product that came out. I’m sure that’s the balance everybody will be trying to strike during the awards season.”

Checking in with

The Golden Globe nominations span such 2017 TV offerings as “Big Little Lies,” “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “The Sinner,” plus theatrical releases including “Lady Bird,” “The Post” and “I, Tonya.” Oprah Winfrey will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for what is cited as her “impact on the world of entertainment,” and the Golden Globe Ambassador (the title that previously was Mr. or Miss Golden Globe) will be Dwayne Johnson’s daughter, Simone Garcia Johnson.
A certain amount of prep was started by Meyers and his staff as soon as the nominees were announced last month, but he allows, “History shows that the closer you get (to the show, in writing material), the better the jokes are.” Meyers notes

The 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony airs Sunday on NBC.
He’s seen mostly in heavy makeup and prosthetics, such as in his role as the USS Discovery’s Kelpian First Officer Saru on CBS All-Access’ “Star Trek: Discovery” (which resumes its inaugural season this week). But Doug Jones is quick to point out that only adds more of a challenge for him as an actor.
“It’s not just about a look, for sure ...,” the 57-year-old Indianapolis native explains. “You have to be an actor. You can’t do these roles without having acting training and a background with finding the heart and soul, the wants, needs, fears, loves of that character and playing those through your body, basically, and through your voice.
“Because a part like Saru,” he continues, “I’ve got tons of dialog like any other actor would have, so it just adds another element to a performance. You’re not just spitting out witty dialog; you also have to embody this character from head to toe and give him a physicality that makes him unique and speaks to his species.”
An accomplished contortionist and mime, Jones is an expert at creating a character’s physicality through movement, as he has in such films as “Hocus Pocus,” “The Time Machine,” “Pan’s Labyrinth,” two “Hellboy” movies and “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” and the TV series “Rock Me, Baby,” “Dragon Age: Redemption” and “Arrow.”
For Saru, Jones spends almost two hours in makeup as the prosthetics are applied, which he says is relatively fast given their complexity. He enjoys playing in the “Star Trek” universe, appreciates its knowledgeable fans and relishes his character’s quirks, such as Saru’s preference of salt in his tea.
that his past dealings with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group behind the awards, have been “all very pleasant, so we shall see.”
While he’s a first-time host of the occasion, Meyers –who soon will be a secondtime parent with wife Alexi, and is an executive producer of the upcoming NBC school sitcom “A.P. Bio” – isn’t a stranger to the Golden Globes, having been a writer for fellow “SNL” veterans Tina Fey and Amy Poehler when they’ve hosted the ceremony. He acknowledges that they and Ricky Gervais have put particular stamps on the job: “I feel like Ricky turned it into a night for jokes. I don’t know if it was that as much before he showed up, then certainly, Amy and Tina were without peer when they did it.
“I love how subtly they throw them in,” Jones says. “Just like in episode three ... I’m eating a bowl of blueberries for no apparent reason. But I found out later that our early showrunner Bryan Fuller would do that ... . He would also walk around with a bowl of blueberries and offer them to people, like, ‘Blueberry?’ So that’s why they worked it in, as a little homage to him. It was a nice twist.”

Foodies know Austin, the capital city of Texas, as one of the country’s epicenters of fine barbecue, offering visitors and locals five-star dining on everything from ribs and chicken to pulled pork and brisket.
Which made “The Grill Dads” Mark Anderson and Ryan Fey all the more surprised by one of the eateries they visited there to film a recent episode.
“Every time I go there, I figure out which barbecue place I want to wait in line for and live Texas through the brisket,” Anderson explains. “So we went to a place called Wu Chow, which is some of the best dim sum, and we made chicken mao there. And that surprised the heck out of me because you don’t think about going to Texas for great Chinese food, and it was epic.”
“It doesn’t equate,” adds Fey, “that when you go to Austin, Texas, to find great Chinese food and these guys are crushing it there. Crushing it.”
In each episode of the Friday series, Anderson and Fey – 40-ish college pals and fathers with backgrounds in advertising – travel the country to places such as Austin, Seattle, Portland (Ore.), Denver, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Kansas City and Fey’s hometown of Boise, Idaho, to sample the outrageous, over-the-top and delicious and share their love of grilling.
In this Friday’s Jan. 12 episode, the pals make a stop in Jackson Hole, Wyo., where they sample offerings such as a 40-ounce steak with rattlesnake jalapeno poppers and a house-rubbed 18-ounce beef rib that’s braised to the point of falling off the bone.

Anderson: “Tony Gemignani’s ‘Pizza Bible.’ ”
What is your next project?
Anderson: “One of the things that we’ve wanted to do is to help people who watch our show learn how to cook some of these things at home. So Fey and I are working on a project where for each episode we’re going to release a 60-second video on social media with a recipe that shows people, ‘Hey, here’s this thing you saw at this restaurant and here’s how you make it at home.’ Because sometimes when people see these big commercial kitchens or giant commercial smokers, they might be like, ‘Oh I can’t make that because I don’t have those things.’ So for the people that don’t just want to eat it but want to make it at home, we’re trying to use social media content to help connect them with how to do that better.”
What did you have for dinner last night?

“The 2018 Rose Parade Hosted by Cord & Tish,” www. amazon.com/Announcement- Spot/dp/B077JGNMWS/ Add Amazon and Funny or Die to the list of programmers covering the annual Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif., this a satirical production streamed live on Jan. 1 (and available thereafter) with commentary from what Amazon calls “parade legends” Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan — a fitness guru and a self-help author played by, respectively, Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon.

Despite the title, the actor-writercomedians who star in a new series aren’t alone in it, since the show has earned a second season even before premieres.
Freeform aims for a different type of humor as Esther Povitsky and Benji Aflalo are teamed in the debut of “Alone Together” Wednesday, Jan. 10. Their on-screen alter egos mirror their real-life relationship as friends who are dissimilar, yet united by their rather skeptical view of life in Los Angeles and the general world around them. The Lonely Island, the company that includes Andy Samberg (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Saturday Night Live”) among its principals, executive-produces the show along with the stars.
Povitsky explains that she and Aflalo met at The Comedy Store, “which was,

at the time, very much like the Island of Misfit Toys. It’s very popular now, but it was not that way eight or nine years ago. It was always really empty, kind of like this club that was just for the comedians who were there. There weren’t really audience members, no one was really running it, and it was kind of a mess. It really attracted people like Benji and me, who wanted a place where we could just do comedy and have fun.”
Aflalo adds that after a year of knowing each other, “we became close friends and we made a couple of sketches together, and every now and then, we’d go on stage together. Sometimes, I would host an Open Mic Night and Esther would host it with me.” Also among the duo’s tandem projects was a digital short subject,

which became the basis for “Alone Together.”
“We’d had so many crazy experiences together,” says Povitsky, “and we were at a party for a friend of ours and just running around it together. People picked up on it and thought it was really funny, and someone just said to us, ‘You guys are a show.’ I think it was something we had always felt, but hearing someone who was a little more experienced say it to us, we decided that night that we were going to try this.”
Aflalo notes that “it took a really long time” to get from that evening to the actual sale of the series: “We were like, ’We don’t need a script, we have an outline! We’re funny!’ We had no experience in this, so it was a tough process, but it helped to have a partner there. We helped each other a lot.”

The NBA, it seems, is a twoteam league. But there are some franchises ready to bust that myth this season and one of them is the Toronto Raptors, led by DeMar DeRozan. The Raptors host their biggest Eastern Conference rival, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Thursday, Jan. 11, on TNT.
The achievements of DeRozan and his team in recent seasons have obviously been overshadowed by Cleveland, who has ousted Toronto in the postseason each of the past two years, including the conference finals in 2016. While teams like the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards have joined the Raptors in stirring the pot in the East in recent seasons, for a while Toronto and DeRozan were Cleveland’s toughest opposition in the conference.
DeRozan joined the Raptors as a top-10 draft pick out of USC in 2009. The team improved steadily and by the end of the 2013-14 season were in the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2008. They’ve returned each year since. Last season they were on the Cav’s heals once again when injuries to DeRozan and Kyle Lowry slowed them down. Still, DeRozan started 78 games and averaged a career high 23.5 ppg. Their season ended in the conference semifinals when they were swept by Cleveland. This season DeRozan has been on a hot streak, averaging over 27 ppg in helping the Raptors keep pace with Cleveland, Boston and their other Eastern Conference foes. With Lowry, Jonas Valanciunas and some help off the bench, Toronto once again hopes to be in the thick of things come April.

The Four: Battle for Stardom
Television certainly has had its share of singing contests, so one way to do a new one is to invert the process, starting with four singers determined to be terrific ... which they have to continue to prove, to keep a challenger from knocking them out of the competition. So it is with this series, which also boasts some well-known talents as it premieres: host Fergie and judges Sean Combs, DJ Khaled, Meghan Trainor and music executive Charlie Walk.
FRIDAY

7 p.m. on KTUL Child Support
The title of this premiering series is appropriate, but may suggest that it’s something it isn’t. It’s actually a game show, with Ricky Gervais among its creative forces. The sly actor-comedian chats with five youngsters and gets them to answer questions — which then are posed to adult contestants, who can rely in the kids to “save” them if they’re stumped. Fred Savage, who’s been doing quite a bit of sitcom directing lately, is the host.
SATURDAY
8 p.m. on KTUL Ten Days in the Valley
The “days” are done as the last two scheduled episodes of this drama series air back-to-back — and with the home-video set’s release several days earlier, those who can’t wait to see how the mystery turns out have a chance to see it before this telecast. Kyra Sedgwick wraps up her role as television producer Jane, whose young daughter’s (Abigail Pniowsky) abduction set the story in motion. “Day 9: ReCast” is followed by “Day 10: Fade Out.” Erika Christensen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kick Gurry, Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Josh Randall also star.

In making science accessible to the masses, “Mind Field” host Michael Stevens will from time to time make himself the subject of his own experiments –sometimes to his own peril.
That was established in the YouTube Red series’ premiere episode last January, when the 31-year-old Kansan locked himself into a plain white room for three days to document the effects of isolation and sensory deprivation on his mental and physical state. The results, he says, were both surprising and frightening.
“The biggest surprise looking back on it now is how much more mentally acute I was when I came out ...,” he says. “But it was scary when the door closed and I realized I’m not coming out for three days. And then it was scary when I stopped being able to ascertain what was real.
“All of my dreams, for whatever reason, were about me in the room,” he continues, “so I couldn’t distinguish if I was dreaming or not. And when weird things begin to happen in my dreams, which were in the room, I didn’t know if, for instance, I’m supposed to leave the room. Did someone just come in? I dreamt they did, but I could not tell what was real. I mean, that’s the classic delusions that we know happen when the brain is starved of stimulation. And so that was the frightening part.”
In Season 2, the educator and creator of the YouTube channel Vsauce continues his investigations of psychology and

neuroscience as he explores such areas as mind control, the effects of technology on the brain’s memory centers, the placebo effect and the use of psychedelic drugs to bring about self-healing and personal enlightenment.
For this, Stevens traveled to a Peruvian retreat to participate in a ceremony in which he takes ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic drink that has been consumed for thousands of years by that South American country’s indigenous people and is said to open its user to the medicine that is the shaman’s song.
After downing the concoction, Stevens initially found himself anxiety-stricken in this unfamiliar state of mind, especially in front of lights and a TV camera, but he soon found a way to work through it.
“I was able to do was overcome a lot of the anxiety I felt during that ceremony by embracing helping others, completely being as unselfish as possible ...,” he explains. “I wanted the researchers there to get all the information from me that they wanted. I wanted the crew to have as good of a time as possible. Those things made me feel better and I’ve used that lesson now in my life later.
“You know, a lot of hang-ups and anxieties can be quelled by just realizing, look, it’s not about me or what I’m worried about, I should focus on what other people want from me and how I can help them. And I’ve seen in my life a lot of those personal anxieties evaporate by taking on that approach.”
