Duo brings talents to OMHOF

Joe Mack and Carter Sampson collaborate for unique concert

You might consider Joe Mack and Carter Sampson a family act when they get together at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame tonight.

Mack said he and Sampson have performed together off and on for around 15 years.

“We have a pretty long history of playing music together,” Mack said.

“We’re kind of like brother and sister.

We have a lot of really interesting experiences and shared stories that sometimes will spill out in conversation in between songs. Sometimes, we’ll let listeners into where a song might have come from or why a song is there, and why we’re playing it.”

The two will fill you in on their latest collaboration at 7 p.m. today at OMHOF.

According to Mack’s website, the Tahlequah musician is known for adding his style to a variety of music.

He has performed with such diverse acts as Randy Crouch, Turnpike Troubadours, the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic.

Free-spirited Carter Sampson began experimenting with sound at the age of 15. Her website says she averages 220 shows each year.

Mack said Sampson was one of the finalists in the Telluride Songwriter festival a few years ago.

“In the last couple of years, she’s

been stretching out and performing to an international audience and has toured pretty extensively in Europe,” he said. “In the last two years, she’s flown over there five or six times to perform.”

Her international performances included the massive Glastonbury Festival in England, Mack said.

Mack described the music he plays with Sampson as a mixture

Casino Night benefits St. Joseph students

Students stay technologically up to date through an assortment of casino games

A few games of roulette or poker can help St. Joseph Catholic School students stay technologically up to date.

St. Joseph Home and School group will host a Casino Night, 6 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the St. Joseph Parish Hall. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door and will include $50 in gaming chips, two drink tickets and food.

Shari Paul, an event coordinator said casino games include blackjack, craps, Texas hold’em poker, roulette, bingo and other table games. There also will be a live auction and silent auction.

“There will be prizes for winning on the table games,” Paul said. “Lots of local

businesses have donated gift cards, dinners and things like that. People have donated jewelry.”

She said classes have assembled a variety of gift baskets for the silent auction.

“I know there’s going to be a car care basket, a book basket, a wine basket,” she said.

There also will be Pioneer Woman basket, filled with items relating to Oklahoma chef, blogger and television personality Ree Drummond.

Neil Workman’s math class put together items for a “Family Game Night” basket.

Paul said live auction items feature a side of beef, including processing. Other items include tickets to Oklahoma Thunder games.

“We have four Thunder tickets, and they will be auctioned off in pairs, so there will be

two sets,” she said.

Paul said the school relies on major fundraisers, such as Casino Night.

“Of course, our school isn’t publicly funded by the state,” she said. “It’s all through donations from the community.”

St. Joseph Principal Joanne Myers said the Home and School group holds Casino Night on alternate years with a carnival.

“Casino Night brings in the most,” Myers said, estimating that the night raises $10,000 to $15,000.

She said proceeds from previous events helped fund new Chromebook laptop computers for the middle school.

“Whatever the school needs, it helps pay for, as far as instruction or technology,” Myers said. “We rely heavily on it.”

Katie Impson with the Home and School group said she is aware that school computers need

of folk, bluegrass and the country music of Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton and John Prine.

“And then, just a little bit of obscure songs,” he said. “We play a lot of original material, but we will play a cover of something that is not on the forefront of everybody’s requests.”

Mack said that even after all these years, Sampson will surprise him with a new song.

“Sometimes I get totally lost in trying to figure out what’s going on musically,” he said. “And sometimes lyrically, she kind of blows my mind when I’m standing right there next to her.”

He chalks that up to her creativity.

“Carter has yet to show any signs of stagnation in her songwriting ability,” he said. “She’s always able to pump out songs. Seems like every year she comes out with 10 or 12 new ones that are pretty good, and a lot come out on her records.”

Mack said he expects to “raise the bar” when they play at OMHOF.

“The Hall of Fame is just a gorgeous place,” he said. “It just blows you away with all the pictures that adorn the walls, and the history that is contained in the building itself, both in form of artifacts and architecture. It kind of sets a vibe that we’re kind of honored to be there.”

ICTC classes can lead to careers

Business, technology courses available to wide-range of students

A new year often motivates people to look to the future and consider opportunities to advance career options. Attending classes at Indian Capital Technology Center is one local way to do so.

Whether as a full-time student or attending after work, there are many business and technology courses to enhance a current career or begin work toward a new venture. Hobby and pleasure courses – such as cake decorating and photography – are also available.

In recent years, ICTC has been focused on partnering with regional industries to provide training in the areas currently needed by the companies, as well as advancing with an eye on the future.

One of those ongoing needs is for school bus drivers.

“We’ve stepped up our bus driver training program to help our partner schools. The state has stepped up their rigor; it’s harder to pass the written and driving tests,” said Robin Roberts, Tahlequah campus director.

Now ICTC offers a pre-test study session with students, as well as pre-test, hands-on training to help students be more prepared.

Pre-enrollment in courses is encouraged as they usually fill up, according to Roberts.

“We’re serving about 220 high school students full-time and 125 full-time adults,” he said. “All of our programs are

technology) industry and welding always have job opportunities for students to make great money, and the auto industry is always short of skilled laborers. We’re trying to fill those demands and students desire to have higher wage opportunities,” Roberts said.

A regional catalog for ICTC includes Tahlequah, Muskogee, Sallisaw and Stilwell locations. Courses vary by campus, but range from Smart Phone Use for Savvy Seniors to Mobile Phone Android App Developer. Other subject areas include forklift operator training, phlebotomy, Spanish, tax preparation, knife-making, medical coding, wood turning, silk floral arrangements, dementia care, sign language, and dental assistant.

“Muskogee has graphic design. Tahlequah has evening photography, and we have great participation in the cake decorating classes,” said Roberts.

Recently, a criminal justice program as been added.

“It’s popular and students have had good success going from our program into entry level, unarmed security guard, or work as a dispatcher or other positions,” he said. He said many students choose to go into higher education in the criminal justice system.

“We’re a strong advocate of Northeastern State University’s program. Many of our students pipeline there,” said Roberts.

ICTC also offers more than 300 online courses including Video Game Design and Development, Web Design, and Starting and Operating Small and Home-Based Businesses.

The technology centers look to understand how to best serve the area business community, as well as offer courses individuals request, while educating students to become successful in the studies of choice.

“We want the community to be proud of their technology center. It’s funded though local taxes and we want people to feel like they’re getting their money’s worth,” Roberts said, who noted the Tahlequah campus as the highest percentage of Native American students of all the 50-plus technology centers across the state.

60th Grammys gets into a New York state of mind

When viewers sit down to the 60th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, they may notice a bit of a regional slant to the proceedings.

That’s because Music’s Biggest Night, which airs Jan. 28 on CBS, makes its return to New York City and Madison Square Garden following a 15year stint at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. And for that there will be a celebration.

To mark the occasion, twotime Grammy winner Patti LuPone will reprise her iconic “Evita” role of Eva Peron to sing “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” from that Tony-winning musical and Ben Platt will perform a classic selection from “West Side Story” – both in a special Broadway tribute honoring the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Leonard Bernstein.

As for the awards themselves, James Corden returns to host

for a second consecutive year, with the roster of musical performers including Lady Gaga (who will perform a track from her Grammy-nominated album “Joanne”), Little Big Town, Pink and Childish Gambino in his Grammy stage debut.

As for the nominations, Jay-Z tops the list with eight nods, including Album of the Year (for “4:44”) and Record of the Year (for “The Story of O.J.”). With 21 Grammys and 74 nominations to his credit, he is tied with Stevie Wonder and conductor George Solti for third in all-time nominations behind Quincy Jones (79) and Paul McCartney (78). History could be made if the 48-year-old rap star otherwise known as Shawn Carter has a big night.

Next is Kendrick Lamar with seven for “Damn,” this thirdstraight release to garner an Album of the Year nod; Bruno Mars with six, among them a Record of the Year nod for “24K

Magic,” his fifth nomination in that category since 2010; and SZA, with five nods, including for Best New Artist.

Speaking of new artists, there are four in that category in addition to SZA (whose debut studio album “Ctrl” was released to universal acclaim): Alessia Cara, a Canadian singer-songwriter whose single “1-800-273-8255” is up for Song of the Year; Lil Uzi Vert, a Philadelphia-based hip-hop artist whose debut album “Luv Is Rage 2” reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart this past summer; Julia Michaels, a singer-songwriter from Iowa whose debut single “Issues” was certified triple platinum; and Khalid, a Texasbased singer-songwriter whose debut studio album “American Teen” is nominated for several Grammys, including Best Urban Contemporary Album. A win for him would make the 19-year-old just the fourth

artist under the age of 20 (after Alison Krauss, LeAnn Rimes and Rihanna) to take home a Grammy.

As for rest of the major awards, here is the complete list:

Record of the Year:

“Redbone,” Childish Gambino; “Despacito,” Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee Featuring Justin Bieber; “The Story of O.J.,” Jay-Z; “Humble,” Kendrick Lamar; “24K Magic,” Bruno Mars Song of the Year: “Despacito,” Luis Fonsi; “4:44,” Jay-Z; “Issues,” Julia Michaels; “1-800-273-8255,” Alessia Cara; “That’s What I Like,” Bruno Mars

Album of the Year: “Awaken, My Love!” Childish Gambino; “4:44,” Jay-Z; “Damn,” Kendrick Lamar; “Melodrama,” Lorde; “24K Magic,” Bruno Mars

Kevin Frazier has worked his share of red-carpet events, but he knows the process may be somewhat different now.

The “Entertainment Tonight” co-host joins two of his colleagues from that syndicated weeknight show – Nancy O’Dell and Keltie Knight – for “Grammy Red Carpet Live,” which CBS will televise before the 60th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, Jan. 28.

The trio will talk with celebrities entering New York’s Madison Square Garden for the recording-industry event (to be hosted by James Corden), and with the stories of sexual harassment that have rocked show business lately, the amiable Frazier realizes the usual pre-show questions likely won’t suffice.

“This year, women could make a very powerful statement on red carpets throughout the award season,” reasons Frazier, who notes they have started extending that to fashion “by wearing black this year. And if they do, it will become a huge conversation and a huge part of the evening at each and every one of these award shows. It will be a loud statement on nights when fashion plays a large part in what we report about the next day, and for the designers also.”

Whatever may result from this year’s Grammy warm-up show, former sportscaster Frazier says, “The red carpet is something I think everyone should experience ... and I mean a big-time red carpet, like the Grammys or the Emmys or the Oscars, where people are coming at you fast and furious.

“The first few times you do it, it takes your breath away because it goes by so fast. Every time you turn

around, there’s another big star coming at you, and you have to have information to engage them – but also get the information you need. It becomes a test of how much knowledge you can cram into your head. And thankfully, I am a fantastic Trivial Pursuit player.”

On his suitability for hosting a Grammy pre-show: “I am a huge music fan. I was one of those kids who grew up with MTV, when it was this new, magical thing that not all cable systems had. I remember going to a buddy’s house in Ohio, and they had MTV –and from there, I’d put in VHS tapes to record ‘Video Soul’ off BET. Music has been a big part of my life.”

Rosenthal takes it around the world on Netflix’s ‘Somebody Feed Phil’

The show has a new title and a new platform but the content of what is now called “Somebody Feed Phil” is the same.

Currently streaming on Netflix after its season on PBS, the hourlong series formerly known as “I’ll Have What Phil’s Having” takes its host, Phil Rosenthal – best known as the creator/writer/executive producer of the long-running sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond” – to worldwide locations such as Bangkok, Saigon, Lisbon, New Orleans, Mexico City and Tel Aviv, to check out the local scene, including the people, the landscape, the culture and, most importantly, the cuisine.

“These are touristy spots that I’ve started with,” Rosenthal explains, “and they’re touristy for a reason –because they’re wonderful. And as the show continues, just like in life if you’re a traveler, you get a little bit further and further afield. You go to places that maybe weren’t the first places you think of for a vacation. I went to Vietnam on this one and that was a little bit out of my comfort zone in terms of thinking, ‘Where would I go? Where would I tell people to go on a vacation?’ But everyone was telling me Vietnam’s their favorite place they’ve ever been.”

Probably the most exotic meal Rosenthal had in this set of episodes was the crab omelet he dined on in a higher-end restaurant in Bangkok, which he says ran about $30 (and would cost around $90 in the states) but could feed two people. If you wanted to eat on the cheap, he says, the seaside Thai capital offered plenty of options in the neighborhood of $1 or $2.

In “The Simone Biles Story,” premiering Saturday, Feb. 3, newcomer Jeanté Godlock stars in the title role of the U.S. artistic gymnast who overcame a tumultuous childhood marked by abandonment, foster care and eventually adoption to achieve Olympic glory two years ago in Rio de Janeiro, winning five medals, four gold.

Biles’ journey began at age 6, when a coach at a gymnastics training center spotted her gift. But honing her routines to a world-class level meant sacrificing things other kids took for granted like high-school football games, proms and college at UCLA. But with the

Based on the cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan, this sci-fi series is set 300 years in the future where consciousness can be digitized, human bodies are interchangeable and death is no longer permanent. It is in this society where Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman), a warrior whose mind has been imprisoned for centuries, is given the chance to go free — if he solves a murder. support of parents Ron (Julius Tennon, “How to Get Away With Murder”) and Nellie (Tisha Campbell-Martin, “My Wife and Kids”) and younger sister Adria (Raven Bowens, “The New Edition Story”), she is able to realize her dream and make Olympic history.

The story is based on the book “Courage to Soar: A Body in Motion, a Life in Balance” by Biles, who is also an executive producer of this film.

“She always seemed like a very confident individual and I was like, ‘Man, this girl’s so strong and she has a story to tell,’ ” says Godlock of her initial impressions of Biles. “And so when I met her, it was so funny because she was all those things and more, and she was so nice and so friendly and just really down to earth and I really like

that. ... And we’re still friends, so that’s great.”

To prepare for the role, Godlock studied Biles, digesting as many films of her routines and interviews as she could to pick up on her mannerisms and speech cadence, and watching her interactions with others when she came on set. She also hit the gym where the movie was filmed in Vancouver to practice some of Biles’ choreography on the balance beam.

“When we started doing Rio, the Olympic scenes, those were way more grueling, I would say, because it was so intense because we had like 200 or 300 (extras),” Godlock says with a laugh. “And so it was almost like I was at the Olympics because I was doing this beam routine and I’m trying to focus on it and then there are so many eyes and everything. But once you do it

over and over, it gets better but it also starts taking a toll on you. But I’m in really good shape so it wasn’t so bad.”

In fact, one scene had Godlock as Biles winning the gold in the all-around competition with Biles herself looking on.

“If there weren’t 300 eyes and it was just Simone and I was playing out the scene, that is powerful enough,” the actress says. “I don’t know what it’s like to win a gold medal, but to accomplish something and to have that many people watching just in my work, it felt really amazing to kind of identify with something that necessarily wasn’t a gold medal but just an achievement, and you just get this rush. I can only imagine winning a gold medal in front of the world, and it was really powerful.”

Steven Stamkos, right at home at NHL All-Star game

The Tampa Bay Lightning will host the 63rd NHL All-Star Game, which airs Sunday, January 28 on NBC. Front and center will be the Lightning center Steven Stamkos, who will be the captain of the Atlantic Division team in the All-Star Game, which features a three-on-three format and the four divisions facing each other in a single-elimination tournament. Back from an injury-plagued 201617 season, Stamkos has the Lightning atop the NHL standings, and is again among the leading scorers in the NHL. Now in his tenth NHL season, he’s spent his entire career with Tampa Bay, who drafted him with the very first pick of 2008. With Stamkos on the ice, Tampa is competitive. Without him last season, they missed the playoffs, after three straight trips. One of those was a trip to the Stanley Cup finals in 2015, where they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks. A year later, he helped the Lightning reach the playoffs again, but was injured towards the end of the regular season and played briefly in one game.

As much as the All-Star Game will be entertaining and honorable for Stamkos and the Lightning, finally having their best player healthy and ready to make a serious playoff run is the ultimate goal. There’s still a lot of hockey left in the season, but if the Lightning remain consistent, a top seed in the playoffs is inevitable. Most of all, earning the franchise its first Stanley Cup since 2004 is the ultimate reward.

Among the highlights in the miniseries premiere, newborn Kalahari meerkats are viewed below ground for the first time, and an orphaned chimpanzee makes his way through the the treetops above Cameroon.

SECURITY VS. FREEDOM AT THE HEART OF ‘ELECTRIC DREAMS’ EPISODE

The desire for safety is primal within all of us, but what good is safety if it means giving up too many freedoms?

The question of security versus freedom has been debated for centuries and probably more so since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. And it’s the thrust of an episode that’s currently streaming of “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams” on Amazon.

The eighth episode of Season 1, titled “Safe and Sound,” is set in the near future in an unnamed Eastern U.S. city, where myriad drones crisscross the skies, reports of terror attacks dominate the news and government surveillance is pervasive. It is here that Irene and Foster Lee (Maura Tierney, “The Affair,” and Annalise Basso, “Cold”), a mother and daughter from the “free” West, arrive to make a new life.

Foster gets a preview of just how different it is here on her first day at her new high school when she sets off alarms as she tries to enter.

Informed by the jump-suited centurions guarding the school, a certified safe zone, that she needs to be wearing her Dex, a wrist-worn tracking device, the anxious teen complies and

gets one, much to the dismay of her free-thinking mother.

And Mom is not someone to be messed with. As an elected official in West America, Irene is not intimidated by a military roadblock when she enters the East city, and she’s far from amused when Foster elects to don the device, explaining that she’s giving away some of her independence in exchange for some perceived security.

“The character is a real kind of revolutionary and pretty unyielding,” Tierney explains. “She’s a radical activist in that time period in the future, where the government is sort of deeply kind of encroaching on people’s personal and psychological lives. ... I’m usually cast in more kind of softer, more roles of compassion, so I like the hardness of this woman.”

Of course, conformity has its benefits and Foster – who just wants to fit in and not be thought of as a West terrorist – soon realizes them: more friends and all the resources that Dex has to offer, including Ethan, a friendly voice from tech support.

But as Irene and the episode warns, that all comes at a price.
