all Street’s ‘Black Monday’ is played for humor by Showtime

Black Monday signifies one of the most devastating days in Wall Street histor y, but enough time has passed for some – or at least for Showtime – to find humor in it.

The comedically toned series “Black Monday” debuts Sunday, Jan. 20, with “House of Lies” veteran Don Cheadle returning to the cable network as another tireless wheeler-dealer ... a broker involved in the 1987 event cited as the worst crash ever to rock the stock market. Ultimately, he sees it as an opportunity against the old-thinking financial establishment.

Also starring are Andrew Rannells (“Girls”) as a financial-world novice, and Regina Hall (“Girls Trip”) as “the street’s” first female head trader. With Paul Scheer, Bruce Dern and Horatio Sanz featured as well, the program counts Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg among its executive producers, along with creators David Caspe (whose wife, Casey Wilson of his show “Happy Endings,” also appears) and Jordan Cahan.

Hall’s Dawn Darcy comes out of the gate strong in “Black Monday.” Justifiably calling her “a beast,” the actress says, “ What I really love is how much comedy they’ve put in that world. Usually in a show like this, the woman is the one who’s like, ’Come on, guys, get it together.’ I love that Dawn plays with the

guys a little, and she’s kind of just as bad. As the show progresses, you see that she’s really one of the guys. ”

Though “Black Monday” is set in the late 1980s, Hall believes Dawn is just as relevant to today: “ This was at a time when things were a lot less politically correct. I can’t even say that irreverence toward women was ‘tolerated,’ it just was what it was. The fact that she had to learn to navigate that world, and still be successful, makes her a pioneer ... but it’s not like she has all-stars on her team. ”

Still, Dawn’s work is cut out for her opposite Maurice “Mo” Monroe, played by Cheadle. Maintaining she’s “always been a huge fan” of the actor, Hall notes, “To watch him work in person, and to be able to work with him and off him, it’s been a dream. He’s so rich as an artist and gives you so much. I feel like I’ve learned a lot by watching him.”

For “Scar y Movie,” “ The Best Man” and “ Think Like a Man” alum Hall, “Black Monday” follows a significant film year in which she earned acclaim for “ The Hate U Give” and “Support the Girls.” She reflects, “It all feels kind of wonderful. There are people who won’t know me (from movie work), but I’m all right with that, because Dawn has a lot of colors. She’s pretty badass.”

Since doing a comedy series is something new for you, how did you prepare for “Fam”?

I had never been to a sitcom set in my life, so I spent about a month visiting various sets. CBS was ver y gracious in letting me go to the “Big Bang Theor y” set, and I spoke to (executive producer) Chuck Lorre and he gave me some advice. Then, I went to the “Mom” set and watched Allison Janney and Anna Faris. I just made my rounds and sat and watched and learned, and it was really helpful to do that before stepping onto my own set for the first time.

As with the same network’s “The Neighborhood” this season, “Fam” is very much a racially blended comedy. Do you have any thoughts on that?

It’s something that I’m proud none of us ever really mention, or that we never really shine a light on. It’s sor t of a nonissue. We live in a day and a time where that doesn’t need to be highlighted ... I mean, love is love. It doesn’t matter what shape or form you find it in.

If you love the person for who they are, the external factors shouldn’t matter. I’m proud that the show is ver y inclusive, but it’s not something that we lean into or make into a big deal. It’s not, or at least it shouldn’t be.

The relationship between (half-sisters) Clem and Shannon, I can relate to ver y much. My brother and I had a ver y tumultuous relationship like that growing up. It’s a ver y fine line between love and hate and I definitely loved him, and he definitely hated me. (In the show,) Shannon is that annoying presence in Clem’s life.

Clem initially doesn’t want her around, but they’re so similar, Clem eventually feels a responsibility to help her go through life without having to deal with the same issues.

‘Bad’

Q: I’ve been enjoying doing in the ratings?

A: We feel bad (come on, presenting the related information, seen the last of the Sarayu produced NBC comedy the network hasn’t of ficially ordered any additional episodes, show is all but done.

Cooking Channel’s ‘Food Truck Nation’ spotlights imaginative cuisine gone mobile

It’s not often you hear restaurant owners say nice things about food trucks, what with the business they tend to take away So when Los Angeles-based chef and restaurateur Brad Miller extols their virtues on his new Cooking Channel series “Food Truck Nation,” his words resonate.

“Some of these people are putting out sometimes Michelin-level food on food trucks,” he says. “The cool thing about all these food trucks for me is just that they have so much creativity and so much energy and the reason is because when people find out about them, they go to them. Because people are checking their Instagram or checking their Twitter, they’re checking their Facebook just to go for that cuisine. They’re going there specifically for those food items, for exactly what you’re doing.”

In the six-episode half-hour series, which premieres Tuesday, Jan. 22, Miller heads to different points across the country to sample some of the unique and varied creations coming out of these mobile kitchens, such as the surf and turf burrito from the Bibuta food truck in Minneapolis; the Belgian waffles topped with cookie butter from Belgian Waffle Crafters in Durham, N.C.; the funnel cake courtesy of Drizzle Truck in California; and the wood-fired Neapolitan-style pizza produced in under 90 seconds by Blue Fire Pizza in St. Paul, Minn.

But in Tuesday’s opener, Miller stays local to check out Billionaire Burger Boyz in South Central Los Angeles, home of the Hello Burger, which is an oversized beef patty stuffed with Cajun grilled shrimp

“It’s like literally a burger where they cook cheese and shrimp in the inside of the burger and it has like two fried eggs on it, and a lobster It’s insane,”

he says. “You take a bite and it’s like leaking shrimp Cannot not hear about it if you live in L.A.”

And while that was a culinary delight, Miller says equally as impressive was the subject of an episode airing later in the season, Bibuta’s surf and turf burrito The invention of owner and master sushi chef Billy Tserenbat, it’s filled with raw tuna and wagyu beef and was, says Miller, “ one of the best things I have ever tasted.”

“They do the rice paper on the outside; that’s your tortilla, sort of,” he explains. “And then on the inside he does tuna, scallions and then he does basically like a reduction of soy sauce, sugar, ginger and a little bit of sesame seed oil and he just purees that up and that gets drizzled over that. And then he does the A5 wagyu cut in little pieces, cut into strips, and he actually sears them with salt and he gently places them in the burrito and then rolls it up with the sushi rice and paper.

“I was shocked,” he continues. “I mean, the whole crew was like, ‘This is one of the best things I’ve ever tasted.’ And it’s in Minnesota. It’s really cool.”
