Mankind’s fate may rest with one youngster in ‘The Passage’

The “Passage” in the title of a new series could refer to a young character’s rite of passage, but it actually means more than that.

Based on Justin Cronin’s book trilogy of the same name, “ The Passage” is one of the new year’s first new television dramas as Fox premieres it Monday, Jan. 14. With filmmaker Ridley Scott (“Alien,” “Blade Runner”) among its executive producers, the show returns Mark-Paul Gosselaar (“NYPD Blue,” “Saved by the Bell”) to weekly work as a federal agent assigned to transport a young test subject (Saniyya Sidney, “Fences”) for Project Noah, a secret operation involving a virus that either could save or destroy the human race. The agent ultimately comes to feel more responsible for the youngster than even he expected, going on the run with her while mankind’s fate

hangs in the balance. Jamie McShane (“Bloodline,” “Sons of Anarchy”), Emmanuelle Chriqui (“Entourage”) and Henr y Ian Cusick (“Lost,” “ The 100”) also are among stars of the saga.

A co-producer of the series, author Cronin reports that film rights to his “Passage” novels were purchased more than a decade ago. “Adapting it for an entirely different medium that has a different toolbox, it has different things that it can do,” he reasons, “and things that it can’t do that I can do For that reason, I’m completely agnostic on this. I’m really excited by what they’re doing. I didn’t write a novel where people would read the book for an hour and then not read it again for a week ... so the rhythms are completely different, the constraints are different and the requirements are different.”

And I was like, ‘No, no. Really.’ It was just that the stor y is so massive and so beautiful.”

Did having more time to work on Season 2 of “The Orville” before it premiered help?

The ef fects work, the time for the composers to write the score for the orchestra, all of the time to put together the action sequences and the special-ef fects sequences it’s about twice the work that you do on a normal hour-long show about lawyers or cops.

There are things you learn ever y season about how to make your job easier We learned a lot doing Season 1, and we learned even more doing Season 2. If there is a Season 3, that will be an oppor tunity to really streamline our process, but there are cer tain things where you’re just bound by the reality of time and the physical laws of the universe. It takes the time that it takes.

What did you think about the audience’s reaction to “The Orville’s” first season?

It was really exciting to see such a positive response from the viewers, and I think what they were reacting to was the same thing I was setting out to accomplish. There are a lot of great streaming shows, but I feel like almost ever y hour-long show on television – except for the procedurals – is serialized. It’s a soap opera, and the ar t of episodic stor ytelling is kind of gone in that format.

It used to be that the stor y dictated the tone, and I missed that. “Star Trek” had episodes that were ver y cerebral and dark, then it had other episodes that were flat-out comedies. There’s not one consistent tone in real life. You have a great day, then maybe you have a day when someone passes away and you feel completely dif ferent. That’s how life works, and there’s no reason that episodic stor ytelling shouldn’t work the same way

‘Downton Abbey’ is reopening – but not just yet

Q: I’m excited to be seeing ads for the “Downton Abbey” movie. When is that coming out? – Patricia Holland, Buffalo, N.Y.

A: The film isn’t set to open until September, so it was a calculated move to get fans of the globally popular series (seen in America on PBS, of course) intrigued and excited releasing a composite of brief glimpses almost a year earlier The first trailer makes it clear that the movie brings back the original cast members, and one of them – Hugh Bonneville, alias Rober t Crawley, Earl of Grantham – told us recently that the actors had “a lot of fun” in reuniting. The picture written by “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes, so can expect it to hold true to characters and situations already well-known to the “Abbey” faithful.

A: A few of them, in fact. Having played roles on “Chuck” one of the top “go-to” actresses for basic-cable networks, recent years have featured her in a new yuletide film on In 2015, there were two such movies: “‘Tis the Season and “Christmas in the Smokies” on UPtv (the latter of which also ran “Christmas on Holly Lane”). And 2013 saw Lancaster also star for Hallmark in “Fir Crazy”... she sold Christmas trees in that one, so she truly was “fir crazy.” Her Hallmark holiday titles repeated quite a bit during the past couple of months.

With a good many of us trying to eat healthy these days, we’d all like to know more about what goes into our foods – and hence our bodies.

So foods heavy on fats, sugars, carbs, sodium, corn syrup, gluten, partially hydrogenated oils and GMOs raise red flags for the label-reading set, and for good reason.

Food, to put it succinctly, is fuel and if we put garbage in, then what comes out won’t be great. And we’ll be overweight, sick and tired as a result, as the recent epidemic of obesity and diabetes proves.

But there are reliable sources for good food info out there, particularly on YouTube, which offers up a library’s worth of documentaries and programs to educate you on what you consume. Because life is too short to eat crap

“Nutrition 101 With Dr Mike”: In this 30-minute video, Dr Michael VanDerschelden explains the basics of a proper diet, starting by debunking the myth of the “Food Guide Pyramid” introduced by the USDA in 1992 and replacing it with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. Lots of good commonsense advice here.

“The Surprisingly Dramatic Role of Nutrition in Mental Health”: Yes, what you eat affects not only your body but your mind, and in this TED talk, clinical psychologist Dr Julia Rucklidge goes through a range of scientific research, including her own, showing the critical role diet plays in mental health.

“Processed Food Documentary: Processed Food vs. Nutritional Needs”: Beware of processed foods, is the message of this half-hour film, in which Dr Maya Adam outlines how our increased reliance on convenience foods combined with decreased physical

broadcaster Deutsche Welle comes this 2018 documentary that questions organic foods, whether they really do carry health benefits, if there really are fewer pesticides in them and whether there is any way for consumers to determine if they are indeed organic.

“Food on the Brain”: It’s no secret that junk food is bad for our bodies but in this documentary from the BBC, host Stephen Nolan travels the U.S. to learn about the inner workings of our brains and how a junk food diet can affect it.

“Super Size Me”: Morgan Spurlock’s 2004 documentary, in which he lived on a McDonald’s-only diet for a month, still stands as a cautionary tale of the perils of fast food.

This documentary from Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville looks at the decades-long career of America’s favorite neighbor, Fred Rogers. “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” ran from 1968 to 2001, entertaining children with a host of characters, in puppet and human form, and teaching valuable life lessons. Gretchen Carlson: Breaking the Silence The first of three documentaries to air as part of former Fox News personality Gretchen Carlson’s deal with A&E Networks, this new two-hour film follows Carlson as she travels across the United States looking for previously undisclosed stories of sexual harassment and abuse, with alleged incidents at such diverse venues as fast-food giant McDonald’s and a rural fire department. In the process, Carlson also reveals new details of the toll her lawsuit against former Fox News chairman Roger Ailes took on her family.

It may be largely forgotten today, but Bryan Forbes’ atmospheric adaptation of Mark McShane’s novel of the same title was one of the best-reviewed films of 1964. Playing a mentally unstable medium who talks her husband (Richard Attenborough) into abducting a child so she can get publicity by helping police with her “gifts,” Kim Stanley was named best actress by the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review. She also got an Oscar nod, but lost to Julie Andrews for “Mary Poppins.”
