Cooks get recipes ready for Soul Food Cook-off

Event saw hiatus after death of community leader, contest originator; daughter revives it by popular demand

Debra Mitchell says she used to love watching her grandmother, Zella Wytch, make pies.

“I could never master her pie crust, because she always used her hands,” Mitchell said. “Nothing was the same to me, just adding different flavors to things.”

Such home-cooked diversity comes to Muskogee with the return of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Soul Food Cook-Off, 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center

The cook-off took a hiatus last year after the 2016 death of originator Cassandra Gaines.

Aanje Gaines Wilkerson, Gaines’ daughter, is getting the event going again after lots of requests.

“It’s a staple in the community,” she said. “Even last year, when we didn’t have it, individuals were Facebooking me or texting me, or when they saw me, they’d say ‘Are we going to have a soul food cook-off? Don’t let it die, keep it going.’ It’s something that’s just expected now.”

People have different takes on soul food, Wilkerson said.

“ We consider soul food as something that comes from the soul, down home, south cooking,” she said. “You got your greens, your sweet potatoes, your neck bones, black-eyed peas, pork chops,

fried chicken. All this stuff is homemade.”

Wilkerson said so many things are microwaved nowadays.

“We lost that art of just cooking a homecooked meal,” she said.

Mitchell said she has entered about five soul food cook-offs.

“I’ve done cakes before, I’ve done cobblers before,” she said. “But I haven’t decided what I’m going to do this year.”

Mitchell said she always cooks a mixture of greens, including collard, turnip and mustard greens.

“I just add a little twist to it to give it a really good flavor to it,” she said. “I love to cook. It’s a passion I have. I love cooking, I love to taste other people’s foods, see what other people have to offer. You get to meet people, friends and family. It’s just

Day full of events to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Pancake breakfast and service kicks off parade, car show and after-party

Celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday takes on added meaning this year, promoters say.

Derrick Reed, executive director of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center said that Monday — Jan. 15 — would have been King’s 89th birthday.

“So, we have a grand celebration planned on this day, which would have been his birthday,” Reed said.

The community center will mark the holiday with a parade, party and pancakes.

Reed said this year also marks the 50th anniversary of King’s assassination, which was April 1968 in

Memphis.

“You have to take a look at 50 years since his assassination,” Reed said. “The last thing he stated in his last speech was ‘I’ve been to the mountaintop, and I’ve seen the promised land.’ When I think about that it touches my heart. Is this what he envisioned? That’s the kind of question everybody is asking this year. Is this the kind of world he fought and died for?”

Reed said Muskogee honors King’s legacy through the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

“The programs we provide, the diversity we provide with our center,” he said. “Our youth programs are that vision of kids of all races coming together on a daily basis. Our center is

volunteer

not just for a specific group of people. It’s a community center for all races of people, all political organizations.”

This year’s MLK festivities begin at 7 a.m. Monday with a pancake breakfast. Reed said the breakfast is free, but donations will be accepted. Muskogee Ministerial Alliance and Bacone College will host a memorial worship service at 9 a.m. Alliance president, the Rev. Rodger Cutler, said the Alliance wants to “begin that day in worship and prayer.”

“We have churches from across denominations, across cultures that come together in a spirit of unity, that we believe is indicative of what Dr. King stood for,” Cutler said. “We have all denominations — Baptists,

shouts “What are you doing for

Methodists, Pentecostal, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Catholic. We have all faiths. All denominations are invited to this service as we lift up Christ in a unified manner.”

Cutler said he wants the service “to show the values Dr. King established in his life.”

“His value of unity, helping our fellow man, understanding that we all bleed the same blood,” he said. “We’re here in a unified effort to demonstrate that to our city. Dr. King said when we take for granted the things that are valuable to us, then we begin to lose who we are.”

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade follows the service.

Reed said parade entries line up at 11 a.m. The parade begins at noon

and will go along Martin Luther King Street to the MLK Community Center.

The parade will feature classic cars, bands, church marching units, youth groups.

Reed said classic cars gather on the parking lot for the annual car show after the parade.

“We’ll have food vendors on the outside, and on the inside we’ll have the 89th Dr. Martin Luther King Birthday party,” he said. “For the kids, we’ll have a kids’ zone, indoor games and activities for the kids. We will give out cake, ice cream and hot dogs for the kids. Adults will be entertained with a live band.”

Reed said the band, Instrumental, is made up of area church music ministers.

“They do a variety of music,” he said. “They’ve been around for several years.”

a fellowship.”

Mitchell’s grandmother wasn’t the only influential cook in her family.

“My dad was good at cooking anything, and I liked the idea about how he was really particular about how his food was,” Mitchell said. “My mother, she was a colorful cook. she made sure we had different colors in our meals, in our vegetables, so everything would look good enough for you to eat it.”

Janet Brown credits her mother with making her a passionate cook.

“She cooks everything great,” Brown said. “There’s nothing she can’t cook. She was a stay-at-home mom, so she always had dinner, the table and stuff ready when we came home from school. She’s a great baker. She had a lot of kids, so she had to make it work. Make do with what you’ve got, that’s where soul food kind of stems from. “

Brown put what she learned into dishes she entered in the Soul Food Cook-Off. She said she won first place for black-eyed peas for 10 years.

“I don’t have a recipe written down,” she said. “I started doing cook-offs when I worked for the city. That was the first thing that came to my mind as far as comfort food of soul food.”

Hulbert public library keeps community active

Modern facility holds programs and activities for youth

While libraries continue to offer books for all ages and levels, the modern facility holds numerous programs to keep the public active and informed.

January may be a slower month at Hulbert Community Public Library, but the staff is ready to plan programs and activities, such as a teen cooking class, a Pinterest class for adults and mature youth, reading for preschoolers, and STEAM – science, technology, engineering, art,

and math – projects for kids.

“These programs are school year activities and meet monthly except in the summer, when we focus on the Summer Reading Program,” said Pam Davis, library assistant manager.

The Hulbert library is part of the Eastern Oklahoma District Library System.

“Systemwide, the goal is community. We’re such a small town; there’s not many activities for children besides church and school, so we have activities they can do,” said Davis. “It’s not just reading a book or watching

a video.”

Program attendees usually come from the after-school program or are brought by their parents.

“They really love the hands-on. We just have fun. It’s a lively and fast-paced program, about 45 minutes,” she said. “I go over it with them, but it connects, like adding ingredients to make ice cream, and shaking the container and tossing it back and forth. They learn about chemical reactions and how it works. It’s fun and not just

listening to a film or someone talk. They get to touch and feel, use all their senses.”

Davis said they try to do one special activity each week for at least one age group.

For the third year, Kayla’s Teen Cooking Club, presented by Hulbert High School senior Kayla Rooster, will help teens be more familiar with cooking and making healthier options than grabbing a bag of chips after school. The first meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 3:45 p.m.

“Our meeting room has a sink, refrigerator and toaster oven, which is most of what Kayla needs to use,” said Davis. “Kayla teaches teens not to go home and eat snacks and chips. They don’t have Home Ec anymore, so this is a way to teach cooking skills, easy things. She doesn’t want to get way out there; she may make something holiday-related or desserts.”

These classes are to help people feel comfortable that they can do these things, and learn basic skills. All are very basic and friendly, not complicated, according to Davis.

“They’ve learned to make their own potato bar, and one time they made an ice cream bar – things to make for a get together or when friends come over,” Davis said.

For children ages 6-11, a STEM Club starts Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 3:45 p.m.

“We’ve also added the ‘A’ for arts to STEAM, with make-and-take art projects, and different activities like science experiments, math-related activities or combination activities,” said Davis.

Pinterest Club is for beginners, as well as those savvy with the online site. It meets on Thursday, Jan. 18, at 5 p.m., and is hosted by library clerk Christy Buffington.

“Some children and teens attend,” said Davis. “First, if you don’t have an account, the instructor helps them set one up. She picks things off Pinterest to make. For Christmas, they made and brought something they found

on Pinterest.”

Meeting the first Wednesday of each month at 3:45 p.m. is Storytime with Beth Caputo, for babies through age 5. The next Storytime is Wednesday, Feb. 7.

“They always read, but also do other activities like singing, dancing, bells and crafts. They don’t always do all of those, but they do a variety of activities,” said Davis.

Sometimes the pre-schoolers from Hulbert Elementary attend.

“We had about 30 attend last month. The teachers enjoy it, too, but it’s so frigid right now, we’re not sure if they’ll walk over this month,” Davis said.

While some “clubs” are set on the calendar, additional activities happen along with holidays.

Last year, for Valentine’s Day, the Hulbert library offered an opportunity to write valentines for soldiers.

“We’re still planning for this year. We also had a Valentine’s party for people without dates. We even gave them black roses as part of the fun for a joke,” said Davis.

‘Crime Story’ Season 2 dramatizes the Versace murder

J ust as executive producer Ryan Murphy has told a different tale with each season of “American Horror Story,” the same is true of his “American Crime Story.”

That stands to reason in the latter case, since that series is telling finite, true stories. First was the nine-Emmy-winning “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” and though Hurricane Katrina was envisioned as the second subject, that has turned out instead to be “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” which begins its 10-episode FX run Wednesday, Jan. 17.

Opening with an elegantly staged sequence directed by Murphy and detailing the actual 1997 crime in Miami Beach, the drama

stars Edgar Ramirez (“The Girl on the Train”) as iconic fashion designer Versace, Penelope Cruz as his sister Donatella, singer-actor Ricky Martin as Versace’s longtime partner Antonio D’Amico, and Murphyshow veteran Darren Criss (“Glee”) as serial killer Andrew Cunanan.

“I think the thing about ‘American Crime Story,’” says Murphy, “is that we’re not just (dramatizing) a crime. We’re trying to talk about a crime within a social idea. This was always interesting to us because the idea was that Versace, who was the last victim, really did not have to die. Part of the thing that we talk about in the show is, one of the reasons Andrew Cunanan was able to make his way across the

country and pick off these victims – many of whom were gay – was because of homophobia at the time.

“Homophobia (factored in),” Murphy maintains, “particularly within the various police organizations that refused in Miami to put up ‘Wanted’ posters, even though they knew that Andrew Cunanan had probably committed many of these murders and was probably headed that way ... all of which we deal with in the show. I thought that that was a really interesting thing to examine, to look at again, particularly with the president we have and the world that we live in.”

Ramirez explains his principal interest in playing Versace “has to do with (his) being haunted. Both being haunted and

hunted. And I think that is something that I really connected to, a character that basically came into the States to change everything, forever. The world that we live in is a world, aesthetically, that basically Gianni Versace created. For the first time, he combined sexiness and glamour and opulence, like no one has ever done before. He could see the sexiness of the ‘70s, and then all the opulence of the ‘80s, and he sensed that in the ‘90s. And he combined it, and everybody went crazy. So I think that it’s a disrupter, and I was very attracted to that.”

Criss equally was intrigued about portraying Cunanan, and he reports that in preparing, he found “an overabundance of information.”

Others might be surprised that Catherine ZetaJones is headlining a Lifetime movie, but she’s not.

The “Chicago” Oscar winner and “A Little Night Music” Tony winner credits the femalecentric cable network with letting her make the true drama “Cocaine Godmother” – premiering Saturday, Jan. 20 – the way she wanted to, after she’d nurtured the material for several years. Quite gritty by usual Lifetime standards, the movie casts her as Griselda Blanco, a mother of three who took to the drug trade quickly ... then became a major, murderous Miami cocaine smuggler using unlikely “mules” to transport her wares, and gaining notoriety as “The Black Widow.”

“I’ve been in and out of trying to get a production made of this,” the charming Zeta-Jones confirms, “and it came down to Lifetime opening its doors to me and promising me that they would show it in the light in which I wanted to do it. This woman had no redeeming qualities. As an actor, one always want to find something within oneself that’s similar to the character, or something you can play on. This was not that. She was morally so far-removed from what I believe in, but of course, you just revel in the desire of wanting to play her.”

The wife of Michael Douglas – with whom she shares a birthday (Sept. 25) – Zeta-Jones allows that making “Cocaine Godmother” was “like an exorcism for me in the end. It was hard for me to let go, but the whole process reminded me why I wanted to be in this crazy business. It instilled in me the love of character work, to get under the

skin of a multilayered character. It’s hard to find those roles, but it’s so rewarding to go there.”

Zeta-Jones was happy to have another Oscar winner, cinematographer Guillermo Navarro (known for “Pan’s Labyrinth”), as the director of “Cocaine Godmother.” She has her own aspirations of directing, noting that she “would probably like to do that on TV, maybe even with Lifetime. They’ve been amazing in welcoming me into that family, so that‘s something that I’m working on, to find the right piece of material to direct.”

Celebrity eonophiles put their money where their wine glass is

If you’ve ever set foot inside of an establishment that sells wine by the bottle, you’ve likely seen a few familiar names, Francis Ford Coppola and Greg Norman being among them.

Celebrities who love wine have been known to take their hobby to the next level and put their name, capital and/or blood, sweat and tears behind a product they’re passionate about. Some even take courses on winemaking and educate themselves about the business end of it, and still others get out and work in the vineyards. For a few, it has become their day job.

It’s all in the name of sharing their passion with the public – and if they can make a few extra bucks along the way, so much the better.

One is Stephen Amell, who plays the title character on The CW’s Thursday action series “The Arrow.” With partner Andrew Harding, he started Nocking Point Wines in 2012 on a lark following a baseball road trip to San Francisco. Six years later, they’re producing a variety of red and white wines from their vineyards in Walla Walla, Wash. And while the actor is usually not on site, visitors to the winery can purchase an autographed bottle from the gift shop.

More hands-on is French actor Gerard Depardieu, whose Chateau de Tigne produces reds, whites and rosés from its winery in France’s Loire Valley. So active is he in all aspects of the business that his occupation on his passport is listed as “vigneron” (or one who cultivates grapes for winemaking).

Also very active in the business is former NHL star Valeri Bure, who with wife Candace Cameron Bure (“Fuller House”), co-owns and designs wines for Bure Family Wines of Napa Valley, Calif., which produces high-end cabernet, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc wines.

Another ex-athlete who has his hands in everything from the ground up is Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver, who can often be spotted examining the crop at his Napa

Valley concern Seaver Vineyards, which is known for its high-quality cabernets. So involved is he, in fact, that he was once laid up by Lyme disease that he contracted from a tick bite on his property a few years ago.

Singer Fergie has also has taken to winemaking, and her Ferguson Crest, which she co-founded with father Pat Ferguson in 2006, bottles such varietals as cabernet, syrah, grenache and something it calls “Fergalicious” at its Santa Ynez Valley, Calif., facility.

The band Train is in the wine game as well with their Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co. Proceeds from the retail sales of its cabernets, chardonnays, merlots and other varietals go to a local charity benefiting children and families.

Kyle MacLachlan, star of the Washington-set “Twin Peaks, also happens to be a native son and wine merchant in the Evergreen State, and his Pursued by Bear Wines of Walla Walla sells cabernets, syrahs and rosés.

Fans of the 2004 movie “Sideways” will recognize Fess Parker Winery & Vineyard – founded by the late Western star – for a pivotal scene filmed at its Los Olivos, Calif., property. It was here that Miles (Paul Giamatti) learned that his book had been rejected, resulting an ugly scene that resulted in his being tossed.

As for Norman, the Australian golfer and twotime major champion has been producing cabernets, chardonnays and sauvignon blancs from his Greg Norman Estates in Australia and California since 1996. And the Francis Ford Coppola Winery sells lines such as the Director’s Cut, Storytellers and Sofia (named after his daughter) at its location in Geyserville, Calif.

Gang activity brings a

vigilante superhero out of retirement in The

CW’s ‘Black Lightning’

universe to join The CW lineup this week.

In “Black Lightning,” premiering Tuesday, Jan. 16, Cress Williams (“Hart of Dixie,” “Code Black”) stars as the title character, an armor-suited, masked vigilante gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, which he used for years to keep his hometown safe from bad guys. But when that began to affect his marriage to college sweetheart Lynn (Christine Adams, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) and their efforts to raise daughters Anissa (Nafessa Williams, “Twin Peaks”) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain, “House of Payne”), he abandoned crime fighting and settled into his existence as Jefferson Pierce, principal at Freeland High School, where he

That changes nine years later when the local gang the 100 invades his school and comes after Jennifer, forcing the nowdivorced Jefferson – with an assist from surrogate father Gambi (James Remar, “Dexter”) – to make a fateful decision for the sake of his family and Freeland.

“He’s kind of had this unwritten rule, unwritten deal with (the gang),” Cress Williams explains, “which is I will stay out of your business if you keep your business away from my school. And that kind of unwritten truce has existed until we pick up our story, where it gets broken.”

“He’s done now nine years of Jefferson Pierce by himself,” he continues, “which the school and

his daughters and the students in school have improved and they have thrived but the outside world around the school has kind of deteriorated even more. And so we have to learn that through the course of the series, I think, that what is really needed is a combination of both. What is needed is Jefferson operating at his best but also Black Lightning at his best.”

And Black Lightning at his best is someone not to be messed with. Outfitted in a mask and bullet-proof armored suit, he can shoot bolts of electricity from his hands at gun-toting villains and even pick them up, hold them in mid-air and toss them like toys.

For the role, Williams donned a suit made up of plastic plates that he says looks impressive but doesn’t vent body heat nor flex

Jalen Brunson, a real Wild Cat

March Madness may still be two months away but once conference play gets going, NCAA hoops sure gets interesting. And so it will be when junior point guard Jalen Brunson and the Villanova Wild Cats visit the Georgetown Hoyas in what is sure to be another classic Big East battle, Wednesday, January 17 on FS1.

‘Nova is once again an elite team that quickly climbed to the No. 1 spot in the rankings and is poised for another championship run come March. Brunson has been a big part of their success the past three seasons. Back in December he posted a career high 31-points in a 20-point blowout of Temple, including 22 in the first half. That’s just a continuation of what is going down as one of the most solid college careers in recent years.

This young man has shined no matter what court he’s been on, which includes the international level. He won not only a Gold Medal at the 2015 World U19 (under 19) Championships, but earned MVP honors as well. A year earlier he also represented the United States, winning Gold at the U18 tournament in 2013.

Impressive is the fact that Brunson has held off on testing the NBA waters, but that could happen after this season. He is, after all, the son of Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach Rick Brunson, who spent 9 seasons as a journeyman in the NBA.
