Ellen DeGeneres certainly is keeping her day job, but she’s also ser vicing her love of traditional stand-up comedy for the first time in a while.

One of today’s most popular talk-show hosts, the winner of 30 Emmy Awards and a record-setting 20 People’s Choice Awards did stand-up specials for HBO, but the last of those was 15 years ago Under her new deal with Netflix, she makes her return to that performance format with “Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable,” which the streaming ser vice debuts Tuesday, Dec. 18.

Fellow comedy star Tig Notaro was one of the directors of the recorded-in-Seattle special, along with variety-show veteran Joel Gallen. “It was interesting,” the ever-friendly DeGeneres reflects, “because right up until I said I would do it, I really had no intention of ever doing stand-up again. I did it for so long, it just was something that I felt burned-out on, and I was ready for a new gear. I wanted to do something different.

“ The talk show has been great,” notes DeGeneres, “but I want to challenge myself, so I’ll go and host the Oscars (which she did in 2006 and 2013). As much as I love the (weekday) show, it’s so comfortable for me, nothing scares me about it and I just like

to stay creative. That’s really who I am at heart, a stand-up performer, and writing is everything to me. ”

DeGeneres confirms that “Relatable” turned out to be what she “wanted it to be. I wanted to top everything else I had done. I don’t want to be the same as I was, and I certainly don’t want to be not as good as I was, so it was a lot of pressure. I didn’t have any subjects in mind; I hadn’t been writing, and I didn’t know what I was going to write about, then the beginning of the special hit me.

“It’s the first five or 10 minutes, and it just came to me. I wrote that down, then I knew it was going to be called ‘Relatable,’ and it started flowing, I’d go up on stage and be thrilled that I had 20 minutes (of material), then I’d go up again and walk off with 24 minutes. And then, I’d have 31 minutes. It was just getting to an hour, and then I got to 1:20. That was the challenge, having really strong material the whole time.”

Now that “Relatable” has been completed, DeGeneres – who also starts a new season of NBC’s “Ellen’s Game of Games” next month – says she’s “really proud” of the result. “I like it a whole lot, and everyone I’ve shown it to is really excited about it, too.”

What kind of influence did your “Streets of San Francisco” co-star Karl Malden have on you as an actor?

Tremendous. He was really my mentor I owe so much to him. His work ethic, his tenacity You know, he was in his 60s when we were doing the show And the ability to listen, how impor tant listening was in acting.

I understood why he was a co-star for so many of Marlon Brando’s pictures, why Marlon honored him and liked him so much. He knew the responsibility of an actor to make ever ybody else good. He was less worried about himself and more concerned about making the whole production good. So it was one of the biggest lessons I learned early on. And it has to do with par ts, too. You know, sometimes in your career you’re for tunate enough to have a really good par t and hopefully you’re up for it and shine. But a lot of times, your job, however, is you’re par t of the whole and you just want to work hard at making sure ever ybody else is good because you want to be in a good project, regardless of how great your par t is. That benefits ever ybody

“Elementar y” is a bit trickier to pinpoint, not only since CBS hadn’t yet announced a start date for Season 7 as of this writing, but also because that could be anytime between now and summer. This year, the Sherlock Holmes reimagining didn’t return until late April, and some people took that as a sign that the show might be ending. Instead, it will be back, and it may well be used again to help its network achieve the aim of offering fresh programming year-round.

A: They’re trained professionals. That may sound like a quip, but even though NBC’s weekday “Today” co-anchors often their comfortable studio, they’ve worked in all sorts of conditions. That November morning in New York wasn’t the only time they had to perform in the cold ... though, admittedly, that was pretty extreme cold by the standards of that date. ‘Lidia Celebrates America: A Hear tland Holiday Feast’ salutes rural communities

Lidia Bastianich sees food as a universal language and a way of bringing people of disparate backgrounds and viewpoints together Which is why she chose Middle America as the subject and setting for her latest “Lidia Celebrates America” installment, titled “A Heartland Holiday Feast.”

“I wanted to get to know more and more of America and I do that with food,” she explains. “What I found out was America truly is a patchwork of different cultures which found the comfort, which were given the opportunity to come to live, whether it’s their parents or grandparents, find the freedom – whatever it is, religious, political – and become part of America but still keep their tradition alive.”

In the hourlong program, which airs Tuesday, Dec. 18, on PBS (check local listings), the renowned chef and author visits rural towns across the country to explore their diverse culinary traditions and how the food itself helps to shape and preserve the identities of the people and places. Returning to her own home, she then prepares a holiday feast for family and friends that’s inspired by these travels.

Among the locales she visits is Natchitoches, La., to learn about Creole cooking; Wausau, Wis., home to a thriving Hmong community of Laotian and Vietnamese refugees; Sunbury, Pa., to retrace her rural roots in Pennsylvania Dutch country; and Walker, Minn., a largely Swedish and Norwegian community where she got to experience ice fishing and catch and cook a local fish known as eelpout.

“I’d never done that before and I loved it,” she says. “This lake was completely frozen and it became like a small town – all these little tents and little houses that they have on the lake. It’s

amazing. And then they make this hole right in the floor of the house and they stood there and they fished for eelpout. This eelpout resembled very much cod and we made fritters with it and it was delicious.”

“It was like a big party,” she continues. “We had dog-sleigh rides and all kinds of good local food and getting together.”

In Sunbury, Bastianich revisited the Central Pennsylvania burg where she spent a year in high school in the late 1950s. Here, she connected with a local chef known for her shoo-fly pie, a molasses crumb cake baked in a pie crust.

“We made shoo-fly pie together,” she says. “What’s interesting about this is that I get into their family, into their culture and then they teach me, you know, food is the way to connect with people.”

“Food is the basic of life,” she continues. “You wish somebody well. You wish somebody to be full, to be nourished and so when you talk food people really open up So I went to visit her house and we made shoo-fly pie together and it brought me right back to when I was there as a teenager spending my sophomore year at Sunbury High School

Miracles are nothing new to the ardent but smallish fan base of this engaging sci-fi time-travel drama, which NBC canceled at the end of Season 1, despite strong critical support. Then, three days later, the network unexpectedly reversed itself, ordering 10 new episodes for Season 2, which earned even better reviews. Ratings remained flat, though, so the show wraps things up tonight with a two-part series finale called, appropriately, “The Miracle of Christmas.” Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter and Malcolm Barrett star.

Movie: A Christmas Carol Selfish heart need softening? Make it so. Driven Chicago ad executive Elle Bennett (Brooke Nevin,“Scorpion”) has her eyes set on an imminent promotion at her office, so she is less than thrilled when her boss, Fiona (Catherine Lough Haggquist), advises Elle she’s bringing in someone from their New York office to handle a problem. She wants Elle to work with their handsome visitor, Max Turner (Michael Cassidy, “People of Earth”), but this being a romantic comedy, the pair almost instantly are at loggerheads. Lara Gilchrist and P. Lynn Johnson also star.
