The mind of Stephen King lets ‘The Outsider ’ enter HBO

It might seem impossible for someone to be in two places at the same time – including a murder scene – unless Stephen King is involved.

One of the horror icon’s novels fuels “ The Outsider,” an HBO melodrama premiering Sunday, Jan. 12. Largely adapted by Richard Price (who co-wrote HBO’s acclaimed “ The Night Of ”), the series follows a police detective (played by “Bloodline’s” Ben Mendelsohn, the show’s producer as well) who grieves the loss of his son as he investigates another youngster’s vicious death. A teachercoach (“Ozark” Emmy winner Jason Bateman, also an “Outsider” executive producer and the director of the first two episodes) is a solid suspect, but he has a strong alibi. Two-time Emmy recipient Mare Winningham, Tony winner Cynthia Erivo, Paddy Considine, Julianne Nicholson and Yul Vazquez also star.

Cast as the detective’s wife, Winningham has previous connections to King; she narrated audiobooks of his tales “ The Gingerbread Girl” and “Lisey’s Stor y,” and she appeared in the King-inspired CBS series “Under the Dome.” She reflects, “ When I was younger, I read some of his books, and ‘ The Shining’ was kind of the horror ‘moment’ for my generation. I’m constantly amazed at the amount of work that he puts out, and that makes it to film and television.”

However, Winningham stresses the “Outsider” participation of screenwriter

Price: “I had seen ‘ The Night Of ’ and was just knocked out by it, so when I heard that he was the (main) writer here, that was very exciting to me. ”

The chance to work with Bateman and Mendelsohn on “ The Outsider” also was a big draw for Winningham. “I’m a huge admirer of both,” she says. “It was Jason who initially reached out, and he explained that it basically would be following the King book, but that there would be a big departure for the character Ben would be playing ... and, playing his wife, that it would affect me as well. It was a decision made to add some drama to them as a couple.”

A veteran of such movies as “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “Georgia,” and a familiar television face from shows including “Grey’s Anatomy” and “ The Affair,” Winningham will satisfy her musical yen while “ The Outsider” unfolds. After recent New York cabaret performances, she’ll help bring the show “Girl From the North Countr y” – featuring Bob Dylan songs – from its 2018 Off-Broadway run to Broadway in Februar y.

Still, Winningham rates “ The Outsider” as a special credit for her. “It was my first experience with having women come in and direct,” Winningham notes, “and I really enjoyed that. And the whole thing was pretty much anchored by Ben, who’s my favorite scene partner. I just adore him.”

Burrell thrilled to make ‘Worst Cooks’ better

Now in its 18th season, Food Network’s “The Worst Cooks in America” has corrected the deficient cooking skills of hundreds of home cooks since 2010. It’s a fact not lost on co-host Anne Burrell. “Tell me about it,” the chef says with a laugh. “It’s like pushing a boulder up a hill all the time and it keeps rolling back on me. That’s the way I feel every time I start a new season. ”

Airing Sundays, the new season pairs Burrell with a new co-host, Alton Brown (“Good Eats”), as they each lead a team of decidedly inept cooks in a rigorous boot camp designed to transform their kitchen skills. The recruit who shows the most improvement at the end of the 10 episodes wins a $25,000 grand prize.

According to Burrell, who has been on the show since its premiere, the mistakes mostly fall into the same few categories: knife cuts, not understanding the temperature of their burner, not tasting their food, and probably the biggest sin – a lack of organization.

“People get flustered and they get really disorganized,” she says, “ so their workstation is a complete disaster and then they can never figure out which is for what and what’s going where and that kind of stuff, so things just kind of spin out of control that way.”

“I always teach people mise en place,” she continues. “It’s a French term and it means ‘ put in place.’ It’s the very first thing you learn in culinary school. It’s the very first thing that I teach people and I tell them, ‘Trust the mise en place process. Get kept the show’s success stories. Her enthusiasm for the show and the process of education is obvious.

“I love so much when people come up to me and tell me that, you know, ‘My family and I now cook together’ or ‘ This is the only show that my teenager and I can agree on,’ ” she says. “So it brings families together, which makes me absolutely overjoyed. You know, if a family can get together and eat dinner together, or when there’s things in a household when kids don’t know how to cook but are learning and parents really don’t know how to cook and are learning, they come together and they do it together, it’s a lovely thing.

In the tradition of the Emmywinning “Planet Earth II” and “Blue Planet II,” this new docuseries chronicles the story of Earth’s seven continents and how they shape the distinctive animal behavior and biodiversity encountered in each of these environments. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, the seven-part project uses the ultimate in high-tech filming to capture such firsts as footage of polar bears jumping from rocks to capture adult beluga whales, scenes of grave-robbing hamsters in Europe, and a Sumatran rhino singing.
