Llamas wants customers to feel, look good
Story and Photo S By Cathy Spaulding
esthetician ‘LoVes’ heLPing PeoPLe
Esthetician Whitney Llamas seeks to help people feel good, as well as look good.
“I love helping people,” she said. “I love meeting people, and I love helping people.”
Llamas, who works at The Ritz Salon, 1209 N. York St., specializes in facials and full body waxing.
She recalled having skin problems as a younger adult.
“So I know what it feels like to not love and feel 100 percent comfortable in my skin,” she said. “So, I like to help people to love their own skin.”
Llamas said she adapts her facials to her clients’ skin.
“No two facials are ever the same,” she said. “Everybody has different things they want to see changed in their skin. If they have certain skin care goals, we work with those goals, as well as their skin type.”
For example, if someone with extra dry skin wanted to work on aging, Llamas said she would work on hydrating the skin, but making sure they are not over-exfoliating or causing any sensitivity.
“Dryness can also lead to sensitivity,” she said.
She works with various skin types, including dry, oily or sensitive, as well as work with acne or pigmentation.
“You have people with aging skin, so
they want to work on their fine lines and wrinkles,” she said. “Or people have dull skin, and they just want to have glowing, healthy looking skin.”
Waxing services include eyebrow and lip waxes, underarm waxes, and bikini waxes.
Llamas has been an esthetician since 2018.
“I like just seeing my clients happy,” she said. “Skin care is not always immediate. It takes time. It takes dedication from both me and the client. So, when they’re happy, when they’re smiling, when they’re relaxed and feeling good, that’s when I know I’ve done a good job. It always helps to see those long-term results.”
esthetician whitney Llamas uses a hydrodermabrasion machine with a diamond tip to help balance and smooth skin tone.

Sweet treats keep customers coming
Story and Photo S By Cathy Spaulding
M exican snacks treat L oca L s for 12 years
O ver the years, Snow King has introduced Muskogee to flavorful Mexican snacks, or botanas.
There’s the fruit cup, which brims with sticks of jicama, pineapple, honeydew, watermelon and cantaloupe covered in lime juice and a spicy dilled fruit sauce called chamoy.
There’s corn in a cup, which features corn, mayonnaise and chili powder. There’s agua fresca, water infused with fruit.
“We make them fresh,” said Maricruz Yahuitl, who works at the Snow King stand. “People like to mix them with watermelon and pineapple.”
Visitors have enjoyed Snow King’s Mexican twist on snacks for nearly 12 years, since it opened on a grocery store parking lot. It has remained a family operation ever since.
Yahuitl said that, in those first years, people came for the fruit cups.
“Now it’s mostly everything,” she said. “People came and wanted snow cones.”
So the family bought snow cone machines.
“Now, if they want a snow cone, they get a snow cone and if they want a fruit cup, they get a fruit cup,” she said. “We like to try new things.”
The snow cone menu goes beyond sweet fruit flavors. The Little Devil snow cone has lemon-lime ice and is topped with salt, fresh lime, chili powder and spicy chamoy.
Family involvement keeps the Snow King going, she said.
“We’ve been together, helping out my brother, Miguel Yahuitl, he’s the owner,” she said. “He started slowly, but once we came together as a family, the community helped us.”
Maricruz Yahuitl said Snow King prepares its snacks to order.
“We thank the community for following us,” she said.

New roofing company selected by readers
Story and Photo S By Ronn Rowland
newcoMer Makes iMPact on residents
Stephen Lane has only been in business 15 months.
So upon hearing that Roughneck Roofing was selected by the Muskogee Phoenix readership as the top roofing company, he was thrilled.
“I use this roofing business as an avenue to give back to the community,” Lane said. “I try to give back to the community, but it also helps me get my name out there.”
A Fort Gibson native. Lane played soccer at Bacone College. When his soccer career ended, he said it was time to spread his wings.
“Born and raised in Fort Gibson,” he said. “I ended up moving away for 15 years with a different business doing operations management for a logistics company. You end up coming back home…I left as fast as I could when I was 18.
“Now I’m here with my wife, who teaches in Fort Gibson, an 8-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son.”
Lane worked for Roughneck Supply for almost 10 years before he formed the limited liability company (LLC) for Roughneck Roofing in 2020. He said he started his first project with Roughneck Roofing in May 2021.
“I had received my roofer’s license in the mail, and the very next day, a friend of mine asked if I knew a reliable roofing contractor,” Lane said. “I showed him a copy of my license and said, ‘Give me a chance.’ You could say that was a little bit of luck, but you need that sometimes.”
Roughneck Roofing was based in Fort Gibson until recently. Now his base of operations is located at 2421 S. York St., #14, sharing the same office area with his former employer, Roughneck Supply.
“There will be a wall to separate the two businesses,” he said. “But I clearly have a history with those guys.”
His jobs surround all aspects of roofing, from repairs to remodeling.
“I would say that 80% of our business is re-roofs,” he said. “Another 10% we have commercial and the other 10% is repairs.”
stephen Lane recently moved roughneck roofing from fort gibson, his hometown, to new office space on south york street in Muskogee.
