Congratulations are in order:
Television’s best work is awarded at the 75th Primetime

Emmy Awards

Diane Keaton experiences her own ‘Baby Boom’ classic corner

Diane Keaton has been serviced well by the vast majority of her films, but “Baby Boom” ranks high among the ones that have suited her best. Being presented by Turner Classic Movies on Sunday, Jan. 14, the 1987 comedy casts her as J.C. Wiatt, a workaholic businesswoman who suddenly becomes the guardian of an infant relative. She’s certain she can balance her very active career with her new surrogate motherhood, but it doesn’t quite work out that way.

Eventually forced to reinvent herself, J.C. moves out of fast-paced New York to relaxed and scenic Vermont — where she gets inspiration from her newly inherited child to develop a baby-food brand that she labels Country Baby. Then-married screenwriters Charles Shyer (the movie’s director as well) and Nancy Meyers give Keaton terrific material, and she’s backed by a marvelous cast that includes Sam Shepard, Sam Wanamaker, Harold Ramis, James Spader and Pat Hingle. Keaton reunited with Meyers on the 1991 remake of “Father of the Bride” (which TCM presents the same night) and “Something’s Gotta Give.”

Roll out the red carpet, because it is finally time to honor the year’s best television. The 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards air live coast-to-coast on Fox, Monday, Jan. 15. Broadcast from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, this year’s long-awaited awards ceremony welcomes TV’s on-screen and behind-thescenes stars to recognize the achievements of nominees and winners alike. Originally set to take place in September 2023, the ceremony was postponed due to both writers and screen actors guild strikes last year. With the new submission guidelines in place for Emmy eligibility, all nominated work had to have aired in its entirety by May 31, meaning that, at the very least, it has been over seven months since these stellar TV shows, specials and movies have graced our screens.

It comes as no surprise that the most-nominated series at this year’s Emmy Awards is HBO’s “Succession,” with a staggering 27 nominations for its final season. One of the most critically lauded shows in recent memory, “Succession” started strong in 2018 and only gained momentum over its four-season run. The final season of “Succession” was appointment television with its incredible writing, directing and performances recognized with nominations this year.

In the Outstanding Drama Series category, “Succession” is nominated among fellow HBO series “House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us” and “The White Lotus,” as well as “Andor” on Disney+, AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” Netflix’s “The Crown” and Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.” Outstanding Comedy Series nominees are ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” HBO’s “Barry,” Hulu’s “The Bear,” Amazon Freevee’s series “Jury Duty,” Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” the Hulu sitcom “Only Murders in the Building,” “Ted Lasso” from Apple TV+ and Netflix’s “Wednesday.”

Three performances from “Succession” were nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, with Brian Cox as patriarch Logan Roy, Kieran Culkin as the neurotic Roman Roy, and Jeremy Strong as eldest boy Kendall Roy, all competing in the category. Jeff Bridges in “The Old Man” on FX, Pedro Pascal in “The Last of Us” and Bob Odenkirk in “Better Call Saul” are also nominated.

The nominees for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series spread the wealth across more series than Lead Actor, with nominations for Sharon Horgan in “Bad Sisters” on Apple TV+, Melanie Lynskey on “Yellowjackets,” Elisabeth Moss in Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Bella Ramsey in “The Last of Us,” Keri Russell in Netflix’s “The Diplomat” and Sarah Snook in “Succession.”

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series nominees are Bill Hader in the final season of “Barry,” Jason Segel in the Apple TV+ series “Shrinking,” Martin Short in “Only Murders in the Building,” Jason Sudeikis in the Apple TV+ sitcom “Ted Lasso” and Jeremy Allen White in “The Bear.”

In the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series category, nominations go to Christina Applegate in Netflix’s “Dead to Me,” Rachel Brosnahan in “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Quinta Burnson in “Abbott Elementary,” Natasha Lyonne in Peacock’s “Poker Face” and Jenna Ortega in “Wednesday.”

Taron Egerton in the Apple TV+ miniseries “Black Bird,” Kumail Nanjiani in Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales,” Evan Peters in “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” Michael Shannon in Showtime’s “George & Tammy” and Steven Yeun in “Beef” are nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, while Lizzy Caplan in “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” Jessica Chastain in “George & Tammy,” Dominique Fishback in Prime Video’s “Swarm,” Kathryn Hahn in Hulu’s “Tiny Beautiful Things,” Riley Keough in “Daisy Jones & the Six” and Ali Wong in “Beef” make up the Lead Actress nominees.

more retro rewinds

“The Hustler” (Hulu, streaming): Paul Newman would win an Oscar for reprising the role of pool shark “Fast Eddie” Felson in 1986’s “The Color of Money,” but he first played the part in this superb 1961 drama, pitting Felson against the iconic Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason). Their showdown is captured beautifully by Eugen Schufftan’s striking cinematography, which earned an Academy Award; Piper Laurie and George C. Scott also star.

“Elementary” (Start TV, Sunday, Jan. 14, through Saturday, Jan. 20): The contemporary take on the Sherlock Holmes saga has joined this channel daily, with Jonny Lee Miller as self-styled sleuth Holmes and Lucy Liu as his Dr. Watson, who oversees his addiction recovery – and gets much more than she bargained for as she discovers his unique talent for solving crimes.

“Wanted: Dead or Alive” (Heroes & Icons, Monday, Jan. 15, through Friday, Jan. 19): Steve McQueen was starting a movie career – see: “The Blob” – at the time he became a television star through this Western series. He played Josh Randall, a bounty hunter with a very distinctive weapon, a shortened-barrel rifle that he wielded like a pistol. (Interesting fact: Sammy Davis Jr. coached him in how to do it.) McQueen’s special brand of cool was on bountiful display here, setting the stage for him to rule the bigger screen in subsequent years.

‘Bake’ to school: Kids complete their culinary curriculum in school-themed competition
Duff

Careful, your dog might really eat this homework: “Kids Baking Championship” returns with an all-new episode, airing Monday, Jan. 15, on Food Network.

During this fresh batch of 10 new episodes, hosts Duff Goldman (“Duff Takes The Cake”) and Valerie Bertinelli (“Valerie’s Home Cooking”) welcome 12 young bakers-in-training, putting them through a gauntlet of increasingly difficult pastry-making challenges. This season, the kids will also be met with an added theme, as Season 12 celebrates a return to school in the new year.

“From picture day portrait cakes to blondies that celebrate the most popular recess game, hopscotch, and to cafeteria lunch dessert imposters, they must showcase their baking knowledge by making the most delicious and visually stunning treats imaginable,” Food Network describes.

This season’s competitors range in age from nine (Elise Stark; Abilene, Texas) to 13 years old (Levi Dubner; Boca Raton, Florida), including: Andy Coyle (Redwood City, California; age 11), Anaiah Hodges (Manvel, Texas; age 10), Leland Jackson (Ann Arbor, Michigan; age 12), Jaime Lee (Yorktown, Virginia; age 11), Madison Lendor (Monroe, New York; age 10), Henry Muranaka

age 11), Oscar Stowell (Ross, California; age 12) and Camryn Williams (Charlotte, North Carolina; age 11).

Following weeks of competition — sweet for some, salty for others — the best of the bunch will go on to compete in Season 12’s massive two-episode finale, airing Monday, Feb. 26.

According to the network, the finale episodes will include a “tie-dye doughnuts and ice cream competition, and end with the ultimate challenge of a volcano cake for the school science fair, with the added stipulation the baked good must actually be able to erupt.

“The winning baker,” they continue, “will become head of the class and graduate with a $25,000 grand prize, a spot in Food Network Magazine and the title of Kids Baking Champion.”

Needless to say, with life-changing prizes on the line, these gold-star students are eager to put their best foot forward, hoping to impress their teachers as they explore this season’s culinary curriculum.

All-new episodes from this 12th season of “Kids Baking Championship” air Mondays on Food Network.

BEST TV LAWYERS

Perry Mason (Raymond Burr, “Perry Mason,” CBS, 1957-66): The Erle Stanley Gardner-created character who confirmed that law shows had a place on television, Mason rarely lost a case ... which might have made him seem superhuman but also helped real-life attorneys have a shining public image.

Martin Kazinsky (Ron Leibman, “Kaz,” CBS, 1978-79): Kaz was in a unique position to know how the legal system worked, since he had been a convict himself before representing others.

Arnold Becker (Corbin Bernsen, “L.A. Law,” NBC, 1986-94): Lawyers can have very active social lives, too, and it’s hard to imagine anyone’s being more active than Arnie’s ... a fact that sometimes got him into trouble on the job.

Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston, “Law & Order,” NBC, 1994-2010, 2022-present): Though he was a part of the system, fierce justice-for-all proponent McCoy sometimes skirted it in prosecuting to ensure that the right people got the right destinies. Waterston is playing the part again on the NBC revival that returns with new episodes starting Thursday, Jan. 18.

Theodore Hoffman (Daniel Benzali, “Murder One,” ABC, 1995-86): A stern legal eagle particularly savvy about the way the media worked in covering attention-grabbing cases, “Teddy” was the star defense attorney anyone in the public eye wanted to have.

Ally McBeal (Calista Flockhart, “Ally McBeal,” Fox, 1997-2002): Even if you weren’t always sure where she might be headed in dealing with clients, Ally had a colorful, often fanciful personal life that kept her exploits interesting.

Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies, “The Good Wife,” CBS, 2009-16): She was skilled in the courtroom, but this estranged wife of a disgraced politician also showed how an attorney can keep her head high professionally while facing intense personal challenges.
