A whole new world: Post-apocalyptic action series ‘Fallout’ premieres
‘The Wizard of Oz’ again classic corner
BY JAY BOBBIN
Judy Garland stars in “The Wizard of Oz”
We’re off to see
Of all the films that still enchant viewers of all ages, “The Wizard of Oz” ranks very high on the list. The 1939 fantasy based on L. Frank Baum’s book is one of the shiniest gems in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer library, so it’s no surprise that Turner Classic Movies is including it as part of a 100th-anniversary salute to the studio. The picture — which earned Oscars for its overall score and the Judy Garland-performed song “Over the Rainbow” specifically — runs Monday, April 8. Generations continue to regale in the adventures of Dorothy Gale, Garland’s character who is whisked from a Kansas farm — along with her dog Toto, of course — into a magical land where she makes fast friends with the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion (Jack Haley, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr). More than one young viewer has been alarmed by the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) and the Flying Monkeys, but this movie remains an essential element of many people’s childhoods.
One of the globe’s most successful video game franchises steps into the world of streaming series. The new action drama “Fallout,” based on the best-selling role-playing games, premieres Friday, April 12, on Prime Video.
Set 200 years after an apocalyptic event, residents of luxury bunker communities venture out onto a planet that has changed beyond belief. Ella Purnell (“Yellowjackets”) stars as Lucy, a young woman determined to leave behind the safety of the only life she’s ever known as a vault dweller to survive on the other side of the shelter’s walls on her own.
Per a Prime Video press release, “Fallout” follows vault dwellers “forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind,” leaving them “shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.” Signature “action, tongue-in-cheek gore and a twisted, post-apocalyptic setting” carry over from the games to the series.
Starring in “Fallout” are Aaron Moten (“Next”) as the Brotherhood of Steel squire, Maximus; Walton Goggins (“The Righteous Gemstones”) as the mutated, immortal bounty hunter known as The Ghoul; Moises Arias (“The King of Staten Island,” 2020) as Lucy’s brother, Norm; Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”) as Hank, Lucy’s father and the overseer of the vault; Michael Emerson (“Evil”) as wanderer Wilzig; Mike Doyle (“New Amsterdam”) as Mr. Spencer; Johnny Pemberton (“Superstore”) as Thaddeus; Cherien Dabis (“Mo”) as Birdie; Matty Cardarople (“Reservation Dogs”) as Huey; Dave Register (“Heightened,” 2023) as Chet; Rodrigo Luzzi (“Dead Ringers”) as Reg; and Annabel O’Hagan (“Dear Edward”) as Steph. Frances Turner (“The Boys”), Leslie Uggams (“American Fiction,” 2023), Sarita Choudhury (“And Just Like That...”), Zach Cherry (“Severance”) and Xelia Mendes-Jones (“The Wheel of Time”) also star in as yet unnamed roles.
In the official teaser trailer for “Fallout,” Lucy steps over the vault’s threshold and into a grim wasteland. Half-buried, wind-worn skeletons of humans and structures are the only things poking out of the dunes as far as the eye can see, though dangers lurk everywhere. By the light of a campfire, Wilzig does his best to prepare Lucy for what is ahead of her, telling her, “if you insist on staying, then you will have to adapt.” Adapting is the name of the game in “Fallout.” Humans have either adapted to the safety of the bunkers for generations or have been shaped physically and emotionally by the brutal, barren dystopia left outside. Not to mention the critters evolved to thrive in the desolation — cockroaches the size of cats, a mutant bear and a giant axolotl with fingers for teeth are just a few featured creatures in the teaser.
Jonathan Nolan (“Westworld”) serves as executive producer of “Fallout” — with Kilter Films partner Lisa Joy (“The Peripheral”) — and directed the first three episodes. Co-creators Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel,” 2023) and Graham Wagner (“Portlandia”) also executive produce the series.
more retro rewinds
“The Fast and the Furious” (USA Network, Thursday, April 11, and Friday, April 12): An enduring action-movie franchise began with this 2001 saga, casting Paul Walker as a Los Angeles policeman who infiltrates a hard-driving crew of thieves led by an expert racer (Vin Diesel, who has been part of most of the direct sequels … which number nine to date). Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster are among the nominal co-stars, but the stunt drivers clearly are as responsible as any of the actors for the success of this picture and its follow-ups.
“Rawhide” (Heroes & Icons, Friday, April 12): The Western series began its eighth and final season with “Encounter at Boot Hill,” putting Rowdy Yates (Clint Eastwood) — newly promoted to trail boss — dealing with the aftermath of a case of vigilantism. Eastwood’s upgraded status on the show wasn’t a result of his movie stardom, since “A Fistful of Dollars” hadn’t been released in America yet; it had more to do with the previously top-billed Eric Fleming’s dismissal from the series, part of an effort to re-energize “Rawhide.” Needless to say now (though we’ll say it), Eastwood went on to even greater fame.
Aaron Molten stars in “Fallout”

When the dean (Paxton Whitehead) finds out, Thornton needs to prove he can get by on his own.

Friends of Fieri: Noah Cappe continues Guy Fieri’s search for the best bites around
When Fieri calls, Cappe answers: joining Guy Fieri’s (“Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”) never-ending search for the greatest eats around, celebrity chef Noah Cappe (“Carnival Eats”) takes the wheel of the all-new series, “Best Bite in Town,” premiering Friday, April 12, on Food Network.
“For years, I’ve been rollin’ out to towns big and small lookin’ for joints serving up amazing dishes. But no matter how many miles I put on the Camaro, I just can’t fit ‘em all into ‘DDD.’ So I’ve called in my buddy Noah Cappe and the Bite Club to help me out, and they are hittin’ the road to find some killer small-town dishes on their own,” said Fieri, introducing his flame-lovin’ fans to his latest (shared) endeavor.
Joined by Tiffani Faison (“Chopped”), Shota Nakajima (“Top Chef”), Joe Sasto (“Best Bite in Town”), Aarti Sequeira (“Aarti Party”), Jet Tila (“Cutthroat Kitchen”) and other Food Network stars — who make up the newly dubbed “Bite Club” — Cappe will travel from location to location, checking out two of Fieri’s restaurant picks at each and every stop.
“From indulging in Banh Mi in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to savoring an authentic sushi experience in Davis, California, and enjoying oysters in Placerville, California, [the Bite Club] is on the hunt for the most amazing local dish,” the network explains. “Together, they explore the local food scene in cities across the country, visiting six of the most popular spots in each one. After scouring the town and tasting a wide variety of cuisines, Noah and the Bite Club nominate three exceptional dishes to present to a panel of esteemed culinary judges to determine the Best Bite In Town.”
Newly appointed to the “Flavortown city council,” Cappe couldn’t contain his excitement for the upcoming series, sharing: “This series is a whole new ride

Guy Fieri produces “Best Bite in Town”
with every episode culminating in a flavor-packed showdown highlighting the epic eats that these communities are serving up.
“It’s more than just finding the best bite in town,” he says. “It’s about celebrating the heart and flavor of each community,”
From Knuckle Sandwich and Citizen Pictures, “Best Bite in Town” premieres Friday, April 12, on Food Network.
BEST GENE KELLY MOVIES
BY JAY BOBBIN
“Anchors Aweigh” (1945): Kelly’s legendary dance routine with animated mouse Jerry is a definite highlight of this sailorson-leave romp also starring Frank Sinatra and Kathryn Grayson.
“The Three Musketeers” (1948): Kelly plays D’Artagnan, alongside much of the MGM contract-player roster at the time, in this musical take on the legendary adventure tale.
“The Pirate” (1948): A circus performer (Kelly) pretends to be the pirate a smitten woman (Judy Garland) wants to meet.
“Summer Stock” (1950): A theatrical company uses the barn of a farmer (Judy Garland) who eventually falls for the troupe’s director (Kelly).
“An American in Paris” (1951): Widely acclaimed as one of the best musicals ever made, this masterpiece boasts an iconic climactic sequence that’s a dancing tour de force for Kelly.
“Singin’ in the Rain” (1952): Teaming him up with Debbie Reynolds and Donald O’Connor, another of the screen’s top musicals casts Kelly as a movie star making the transition from the silent era to “talkies” — and needing a singer to help him with that switch. Kelly also co-directed again with Stanley Donen, the late filmmaker whose 100th birthday will be marked by Turner Classic Movies in a tribute including this film on Saturday, April 13.
“Inherit the Wind” (1960): A famous trial over the teaching of Darwin’s theory of evolution inspired the stage play that director Stanley Kramer turned into this excellent film, with Kelly in a sterling cast that also includes Spencer Tracy and Fredric March as the opposing attorneys.
“Xanadu” (1980): In his final feature-film role, Kelly plays one of the people significantly inspired by a muse (Olivia Newton-John).
