America with homegrown artists in ‘The Express Way’

classic corner

Rodney Dangerfield goes ‘Back to School’

Movie vehicles for stand-up comics don’t always work, but “Back to School” — which MGM+ shows Thursday, April 25 — shows how genuinely funny they can be when they do. The 1985 comedy services Rodney Dangerfield ideally by casting him as Thornton Melon, a mogul of big-men’s clothing stores. His son (Keith Gordon) considers dropping out of college, so Melon strikes a deal to take classes along with him, making the tycoon what another character calls “the world’s oldest living freshman.”

Along with many amusing scenes, the picture offers a terrific collection of supporting players, from Sally Kellerman as an alluring literature professor (and Melon’s new crush) to Ned Beatty as the easily bought-off head of the college … “Dean Martin.” Burt Young, Paxton Whitehead, Adrienne Barbeau, William Zabka (“The Karate Kid”) and recent Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. also have memorable moments, and composer Danny Elfman and his group Oingo Boingo turn up in a party sequence. This is just pure fun.

From sea to shining sea, Americans express their creativity, and the new, fourpart documentary series “The Express Way With Dulé Hill,” premiering Tuesday, April 23, on PBS, looks at the ways self-expression and creativity are intertwined. Featuring artists from four different corners of the United States — in California, the Appalachian region, Texas and Chicago — “The Express Way” looks at the ways these individuals use art to make connections within and outside of their communities and how they use their artwork to challenge views and blaze a trail for others to follow in the future.

Best known by most for his portrayal of Gus in eight seasons in the detective sitcom “Psych,” which he also reprised for three spinoff films, Hill, a real TV veteran, has also had starring roles in “The West Wing,” “Ballers,” “Suits” and more recently, the ABC sitcom “The Wonder Years.”

Now, turning his attention to the artistic pursuits of others, PBS shared in a news release that Hill traveled across America “to connect with local visionaries, activists, changemakers and pioneers who are using their artistic passions to foster connection, deepen empathy and create meaningful change within their communities.”

“There are many people in this world who create space out of nothing. They are the ones turning on the light, setting the path and then guiding others along the journey,” Hill shared about the series in the release.

Shaheem Sanchez, known for his performance in the 2019 film “Sound of Metal,” is a deaf dancer based in Los Angeles. Hill meets with Sanchez in the first episode of “The Express Way,” connecting over a shared passion for dance before getting to know other artists across California.

Also featured in the California stop of “The Express Way” is a group of senior citizens who call themselves the Grant Street Follies, a committed activists and cabaret performers in San Francisco who use their art to combat anti-Asian hate and celebrate the city’s historic Chinatown. Finally, Hill meets trailblazing musicians in Los Angeles’s own Mariachi Arcoiris, the world’s first LGBTQ+ mariachi group.

Visiting the Appalachian region, Hill gets a thorough musical education. In Kentucky, he meets first with Doug Naselroad, the founder and director of Troublesome Creek Stringed Instrument Company. His program, The Culture of Recovery, teaches people to make stringed instruments as an assistive outlet while they recover from opioid addiction. In Johnson City, Tennessee, Grammy-nominated bluegrass musician Amythyst Kiah (“Black Myself”) teaches Hill about the history of Black artists in traditional American music. The founder of “Latin-grass,” musician Joe Troop (“Red, White & Blues”), shares how he fused folk music with bluegrass instrumentation and continues to innovate with his latest collaboration with Venezuelan musician Larry Bellorin (“Caballo Viejo”).

Next, Hill makes his way down to Texas to meet artists who are leaders within their local communities. Hill meets Abuela M’api Rainflowa, founder of Houston Aztec Dance & Drum, who shows him the “Mexica” handshake, as well as the Aztec Sun Dance and a sweat lodge ceremony. At his next stop in Texas, David Lozano, executive director of Cara Mia Theatre, welcomes Hill to Dallas, sharing with him some of the theater’s productions that focus on the Latino experience. In Denton, John Bramblitt, a man who lost his vision taught himself to paint again using touch. Bramblitt creates vibrant paintings and murals, leads workshops and helps foster artistic abilities in other people with vision impairment. In the final installment of “The Express Way,” Hill blows into the Windy City to meet artist activists. In Chicago’s South Side, Hill watches on as the Andre Theatre Collective casts its first play written by incarcerated playwrights. The production explores crime in the city and its impact on Black communities. Elsewhere in the city, Vershawn Sanders Ward’s Red Clay Dance uses African Diasporic dance to make a space for People of Color in her community to feel seen. Hill later meets musician Bassel Almadani, of Bassel & The Supernaturals (“Smoke”), who spreads awareness of the Syrian civil war and refugee crisis with his platform.

“Looney Tunes” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, April 21): Rarely do animated series make up this channel’s weekend “Binges,” making it unusual that classic Warner Bros. characters are so much in evidence in the final day of a marathon of the short subjects that have been so popular with multiple generations for so long. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig and company do their things in a festival of cartoons displaying the unique visual style and humorous sensibility that have kept these attractions distinct from virtually any other entries in the genre.

“Peter Pan” (Freeform, Sunday, April 21): One of the true gems of the Disney library, this animated 1953 feature is a fanciful adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s play about “The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up” (as the story’s original title referenced him). Bobby Driscoll supplies the voice of the most famous resident of Never Land, who comes to the rescue of the Darling children after they become captives of the notorious Captain Hook (voice of Hans Conried) and his pirates. Another pivotal character here, as anyone remotely familiar with the tale knows, is the fairy Tinker Bell.

Food and friends: Celebrity guests join Garten in six

The table has been set for Season 4 of “Be My Guest With Ina Garten,” beginning Sunday, April 21, on Food Network.

According to an episode description shared by the network, the six-episode season begins as Ina welcomes her close friend, actress Jennifer Garner (“13 Going on 30,” 2004), for a day of cooking and conversation on Ina’s property.

“Since Jennifer mentions she has trouble nailing her grandmother’s cornbread recipe, Ina troubleshoots with her incredible Brown Butter Skillet Cornbread,” the description shares. “After discussing family, love and childhood memories, they head into the kitchen for a pizza collaboration to create the ultimate Garner and Garten Pizza and Jen’s Pizza Crackers.”

In the following episode, Ina is joined by astronaut Nicole Mann, who rolls her sleeves up and joins the “barefoot contessa” in the process of making an Apple Crostata — a dish Mann craved regularly while commanding the International Space Station. Together, they discuss their careers and family lives, before digging into a slice of warm, ooey-gooey, apple-y goodness.

With great conversation to be had — and many dishes to taste — Ina then bids farewell to her “out of this world” sous chef, preparing for a whole season’s worth of formidable friends. From actress Emily Mortimer (“Mary Poppins Returns,” 2018) and restaurateur Danny Meyer (“Top Chef”), to writers like professor Frank Bruni and the New Yorker’s acclaimed editor, David Remnick, Ina’s kitchen-table philosophy shines through: the more, the merrier.

“Ina then welcomes culinary entrepreneur Danny Meyer to dish about the highs and lows of the restaurant world over Croissants and Smoked Salmon served with delicious Vanilla Coffee Shakerato; shares amazing stories with journalist Frank Bruni as they enjoy her foolproof Gruyere and Herb Omelet with fresh herbs from her gar-

den; treats actress Emily Mortimer to her favorite ravioli in Ravioli en Brodo while talking life, love and the secret to Emily’s Yorkshire Pudding; and has dinner in the garden with brilliant editor David Remnick joined by their other halves — Ina’s husband, Jeffrey, and David’s wife, Esther,” Food Network continues.

With plenty of conversation to come, Ina shared her excitement for the upcoming season of guests and was quoted as saying: “I learn so much about my guests when they visit and viewers will, too. There’s nothing better than chatting with interesting people over great food — each episode is filled with unexpected stories, laughs and inspiration.”

Produced by Pacific Productions, Season 4 of “Be My Guest With Ina Garten” premieres Sunday, April 21, on Food Network.

BEST AUTO RACING MOVIES

“Viva Las Vegas” (1964): As the second season of The CW’s “100 Days to Indy” starts Friday, April 26, this is the song-filled Elvis Presley version of auto racing … but with that said, his star power merged with that of Ann-Margret is undeniable.

“Grand Prix” (1966): The granddaddy of all car-race films — but still as exciting almost 50 years later — director John Frankenheimer’s superbly photographed drama weaves a bounty of driver’s-seat footage throughout the personal stories of rivals played by James Garner, Yves Montand and Brian Bedford, among others.

“The Love Bug” (1968): Go ahead, laugh ... but there’s definite charm to seeing Herbie, the Disney studio’s Volkswagen with a mind of its own, stay in the race when others conspire to put him and driver Dean Jones out of it.

“Winning” (1969): Paul Newman adopted racing as a personal hobby as a result of his work on this drama, about the rivalry between two drivers (Newman and Robert Wagner) over a woman (Joanne Woodward, the real-life Mrs. Newman).

“Le Mans” (1971): After passing on “Grand Prix,” racing enthusiast Steve McQueen mounted his own genre film, which is admittedly weak in the story department but engrossing when it came to sequences on the track.

“Death Race 2000” (1975): Racing doesn’t get intentionally more lethal than in this cult classic that stars David Carradine, but gave Sylvester Stallone one of his first big roles.

“Days of Thunder” (1990): Many genre traditions are recycled in this story of a cocky hothead (Tom Cruise) who learns his lesson — actually, several of them — when he joins the NASCAR circuit.

“The Fast and the Furious” (2001): The stunts have become ever more elaborate as the franchise has progressed, but the original tale captures the pure-adrenalin excitement of street racing brilliantly.

“Cars” (2006): The aspirations of the animated Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) are the focal point of this Disney story, also featuring Paul Newman’s voice in one of the actor’s last roles.

“Ford v Ferrari” (2019): Christian Bale and Matt Damon are excellent as driver Ken Miles and engineer Carroll Shelby, who were a potent duo as they readied to race at Le Mans in the mid-1960s.
