Keeping up with the Smiths: Glover, Erskine front new series
‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’
‘Something’s Gotta Give’ for Nicholson and Keaton classic corner
BY JAY BOBBIN
Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson
star in “Something’s Gotta Give”
When it comes to giving performers of certain ages roles that are fun and vital, it’s hard to beat Nancy Meyers at her game. Most of the writer-director’s grown-up romantic fantasies have been enduring hits (“It’s Complicated,” “The Holiday,” etc.). That also applies to 2003’s “Something’s Gotta Give,” which Turner Classic Movies shows as part of its 100th-anniversary tribute to Columbia Pictures on Wednesday, Jan. 31. (Columbia actually co-produced the picture with Warner Bros.)
Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton have ideal roles as a late-middle-age music executive and the playwright whose much-younger daughter (Amanda Peet) he’s involved with. They start to fall for each other through complications that include an also-much-younger doctor’s (Keanu Reeves) interest in Keaton’s character, who has a memorably hilarious crying jag that runs for about five minutes through a montage of intertwined scenes. With Frances McDormand and Jon Favreau also in the cast, this film is a total pleasure … and not only for older viewers.
There’s no need to relive the same old entertainment this Groundhog Day, because Prime has a brand new offering (without any time loops involved). “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” an action comedy series based on the plot of the original 1941 film, brings a new twist to the classic tale of espionage and high-stakes hijinks. All eight episodes of the series’ debut season release Friday, Feb. 2, on Prime Video.
While the titular, married Smiths are likely to conjure the image of former real-life couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, both of whom starred in the 2005 film of the same name, the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” concept is, in fact, a much older production, one directed by famed filmmaker and so-called “Master of Suspense,” Alfred Hitchcock. The director — then not yet known for his 1960 masterpiece “Psycho” nor his other many memorable films, which include “The Birds” (1963), “Rear Window” (1954) and “Vertigo” (1958) — became very well known for his gripping thriller style, but he also had a penchant for comedy, as was evident in several of his films, such as 1938’s “The Lady Vanishes” and, yes, the 1941 spy comedy “Mr. & Mr. Smith,” led by Carole Lombard (“My Man Godfrey,” 1936) and Robert Montgomery (“Lady in the Lake,” 1946).
Since Hitchcock’s premiere of the now-classic tale, several other takes on the cat-and-mouse spy game have been born. This newest series iteration of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” stars the multi-talented rapper, writer, actor and producer Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) as a suave new spy who must assume the identity of “John Smith,” a standard, unassuming, run-of-the-mill husband to his wife, “Jane,” also a new hire by the same spy agency, played by three-time Emmy nominee Maya Erskine (“PEN15”).
First announced in February 2021, the eight-episode series was originally designed to include “Fleabag’s” Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the titular missus. But, due to some conflicts on the creative side, Waller-Bridge stepped away from the series, and Prime’s new series was born with Erskine as co-pilot.
Glover, meanwhile, who signed an exclusive deal with Amazon in 2021, takes his usual stance with respect to the series and has become involved both on camera and behind it. In addition to starring as the mysterious John Smith, Glover also co-created the series with “Atlanta” and “Fargo” writer Francesca Sloane.
Alongside Glover and Erskine, Paul Dano (“Little Miss Sunshine,” 2006), John Turturro (“Barton Fink,” 1991) and Michaela Coel (“I May Destroy You”) are listed among the show’s big names as well. Dontae Hawkins (“WuTang: An American Saga”), Alex Huynh (“The Greatest Beer Run Ever,” 2022) and Tamara Torres (“Orange Is the New Black”) are also credited among the cast, while Ron Perlman (“Hellboy,” 2004), Alexander Skarsgard (“Succession”), Sharon Horgan (“Bad Sisters”), Úrsula Corberó (“Money Heist”), Eiza González (“Baby Driver,” 2017) and Sarah Paulson (“American Horror Story: Coven”) are all credited as guest stars or cameos.
The series is described by “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (2005) writer Simon Kinberg as “’Married... with Children’ with guns,” but the official Prime Video synopsis provides a much clearer picture of what writers have planned for the series, including budding romance, prime real estate and plenty of situational comedy.
“Two lonely strangers land a job working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels and a dream brownstone in Manhattan,” the Prime Video synopsis reads. “The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. & Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other.”
Approaching the story with heavy firearms and a light sense of humor, “Mr. &. Mrs. Smith” asks the question: “What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?”
more retro rewinds
“In Good Company” (Peacock, streaming): Meant to be primarily a comedy, it might be hard to laugh at 2004 film in the current economy, but it’s still smartly written (by Paul Weitz, also the director here) and beautifully acted. Dennis Quaid plays a veteran advertising executive who gets a demotion under a new, younger boss (Topher Grace) with limited experience – and if that’s not challenging enough, add the fact that the boss starts dating the elder man’s daughter (Scarlett Johansson). Marg Helgenberger and, in a great cameo, Malcolm McDowell also appear.
“The Russia House” (MGM+, Monday, Jan. 29): They might seem oddly matched at first, but Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer ultimately make a compelling couple in this 1990 adaptation of a John le Carre novel. Connery plays a British publisher who’s passed a potentially explosive manuscript by way of a Soviet woman (Pfeiffer), thrusting them both into considerable espionage. The location filming is a plus here, as is an expert supporting cast that includes Roy Scheider, Klaus Maria Brandauer (who was Connery’s “Never Say Never Again” nemesis) and John Mahoney.

“The Woman in the Wall”
Lorna Brady (Ruth Wilson), a woman from the small, fictional Irish town of Kilkinure, wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house. Lorna has no idea who the dead woman is or if she, herself, might be responsible for the apparent murder, thanks to extreme bouts of sleepwalking. Meanwhile, as Det. Colman Akande (Daryl McCormack) searches for a murderer and Lorna searches for the daughter that was taken from her, their paths collide in ways they never could have anticipated. Available via the Paramount+ With Showtime channel.

“R.M.N.” (Jan. 28)
A few days before Christmas, having quit his job in Germany, Matthias (Marin Grigore) returns to his Transylvanian village, wishing to reconnect his son, Rudi (Mark Edward Blenyesi). When a group of new workers are hired at the small factory that Matthias’s ex-lover, Csilla (Judith State) manages, the peace of the community is disturbed, underlying fears grip the adults, and frustrations, conflicts and passions erupt through the thin veneer civility.
“Curb Your Enthusiam” - Season 12 (HBO/Max — Feb. 4, Season Premiere)
It’s the end of an era as this iconic comedy comes to a close with its 12th season.
Starring Larry David as an over-the-top version of himself, the series offers a tongue-incheek depiction of the writer/producer/comedian’s fictionalized life.
To keep the narrative spontaneous, the series is shot without a script and cast members are given scene outlines and improvise lines as they go. The series also stars Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, Cheryl Hines, J.B. Smoove, Richard Lewis, Ted Danson, Vince Vaughn and Tracey Ullman.

“The Greatest Night in Pop” (Jan. 29)
On Jan. 25, 1985, dozens of the music industry’s biggest names gathered in Los Angeles to record a song — “We Are the World,” co-written by two of the 20th century’s biggest names in music, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie — to benefit African famine relief. Chronicling the creation of this massive musical event from start to finish, the film — featuring never-before-seen footage — looks into the early planning stages, writing sessions with Jackson and Richie, the recording sessions inside the famed Henson Studios and more.
“Choir” (Jan. 31)
This six-part documentary series follows the Detroit Youth Choir as they prepare for the performance of a lifetime. Through their eyes, audiences experience the highs and lows of life growing up in Detroit, navigating the challenges of balancing family, school and athletics, all while pursuing dreams of taking their talents to the next level and performing on one of the world’s biggest stages.

“One Day” - Season 1 (Netflix — Feb. 8, Series Premiere)
One Day tells the story of Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) who, on 15th July 1988, the night of their graduation, speak to each other for the very first time. The next morning, they go their separate ways but where will they be on this one ordinary day the next year, and the year after that, and every year that follows? Each episode finds Dex and Em, one year older, on this one particular date, as they grow and change, move together and apart, experience joy and heartbreak. Based on the worldwide bestseller by David Nicholls.
“Tokyo Vice” - Season 2 (Max — Feb. 8, Season Premiere)
Loosely inspired by American journalist Jake Adelstein’s first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat, this series, filmed on location in Tokyo, takes viewers deeper into the city’s criminal underworld as Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) comes to realize that his life, and the lives of those close to him, are in terrible danger. Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, Ayumi Ito, Yosuke Kubozuka and Miki Maya star this season.

Ramsay returns: ‘Next Level Chef’ heats things up with all-new episodes
The “next” evolution in cooking competitions, Gordon Ramsay’s “Next Level Chef” returns with an all-new season, beginning with a special episode airing Sunday, Jan. 28, on Fox.
This series — which was renewed for both a third and fourth season in May 2023 — follows competing chefs, divided into teams, as they tackle a series of cooking challenges. During this one-of-a-kind culinary gauntlet, Ramsay’s contestants find themselves on the iconic “Next Level Chef” stage, split up across three stories, with each team randomly assigned one of three stunningly different, stacked (and stocked) kitchens — how stocked each kitchen is, however, depends on which level the team has been assigned, with the highest level kitchen equipped with a wide range of modern tools and devices, the middle offering a standard commercial kitchen, and the bottom level containing a limited collection of lower-quality equipment.
In their kitchens, the chefs are then given a short time to collect ingredients before they must prepare, cook and plate their dishes — incorporating any surprise ingredients that may be delivered to them — within a tight, 45-minute period. After presenting their finished concoctions, one member each from the top two teams will be sent up to the top kitchen, where they will compete in a 30-minute, head-to-head challenge that determines who “takes the cake.”
During this latest season (Season 3), Ramsay is joined by chefs Nyesha Arrington (“The Taste”) and Richard Blais (“Reinventing the Meal”), as together the mentors leave no stone unturned, going out to recruit their own group of talented chefs to compete in the upcoming season, each hopeful of finding the next big name in the culinary game.
bestof ...
For the first time, “Next Level Chef” will also hold audition rounds, taking place over the first three episodes of the season. Professional, homebased and social media-loving chefs will all compete against one another for a chance to be drafted into the game, where they will be mentored by Ramsay, Arrington or Blais.
With the recipe for success in this competition calling for creativity, consistency and cunning, these chefs are willing to do what it takes to make it to the top and win a life-changing $250,000, truly taking themselves to the “next level.”
A mouth-watering and jaw-dropping competition, Season 3 of “Next Level Chef” premieres Sunday, Jan. 28, on Fox.

BEST STANLEY KUBRICK MOVIES
Kirk Douglas and Jean Simmons in “Spartacus”
“Spartacus” (1960): Title star Kirk Douglas — who also produced the film — reunited with Kubrick by hiring him to direct this Roman-gladiator epic, on which Douglas famously also took a stand by giving blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo full credit for his work. The picture’s four Oscar wins included one for co-star Peter Ustinov.
“Lolita” (1962): The ads acknowledged that many people thought a movie never could be made of Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial novel about an older-man/younger-woman affair, with James Mason and Sue Lyon in those roles, but Kubrick managed to do it (with Nabokov writing the screenplay).
Shelley Winters and Peter Sellers also star.
“2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968): A movie so singular and famous that Kubrick’s name immediately comes to mind when it’s mentioned, this sci-fi milestone examines the battle of wills between two astronauts (Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood) and the computer that runs the spaceship they’re aboard. The juxtaposition of futuristic sights and classical music is ingenious. Turner Classic Movies shows the picture Thursday, Feb. 1, as part of its series “The Power of Film.”
“A Clockwork Orange” (1971): Kubrick went back to the future in a much different way with this memorable adaptation of Anthony Burgess’ novel, with Malcolm McDowell as Alex, a gang leader who undergoes a brutal rehabilitation to cure him of his penchant for “the old ultra-violence.”
“The Shining” (1980): Kubrick brought the Stephen King best seller to the screen, with a perfectly eerie Jack Nicholson as the new caretaker of a snowed-in mountain hotel where he slowly goes mad and terrorizes his wife (Shelley Duvall) while their young son (Danny Lloyd) displays clairvoyant tendencies.
“Eyes Wide Shut” (1999): In Kubrick’s last film, then-spouses Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman play a couple who explore their romantic fantasies ... which seem to leap from their imaginations into their real lives.
