A family can’t say no to ‘Yes Day’ in Netflix comedy
It’s a phenomenon that’s catching on around the country.
Parents, tired of constantly saying no to their kids, relax the rules and let their kids do whatever they please for a 24-hour period – provided, of course, it’s not illegal, immoral, lifethreatening or will tick off the neighbors. It’s called a “Yes Day” and it’s also the title of an upcoming Netflix movie.
Premiering Friday, March 12, the family comedy stars Jennifer Garner (“13 Going on 30,” “Alias”) and Edgar Ramirez (“Wrath of the Titans,” “American Crime Story”) as Allison and Carlos Torres, a Los Angeles couple who weary of being the heavies to their kids Katie, Nando and Ellie (Jenna Ortega, Julian Lerner, Everly Carganilla) and let them take the reins and make the rules for a day.
On the surface, it’s a win-win for all concerned as the youngsters get to plan their own fun without restrictions and Mom and Dad get to take something of a mental health day
But in this case, it also leads to a day of adventure around L.A. that includes a trip to Magic Mountain, a massive water balloon fight and a tidal wave of soap suds in the Torres house.
It’s the brainchild of Garner, an executive producer here who recently granted her own kids a Yes Day and pitched the idea to Miguel Arteta (“Youth in Revolt,” “The Good Girl”), who directed the film.
“One of the things that really blew my mind was that there’s been a little bit of research on it ...” Arteta explains. “And one of the things that has been consistent is that kids request to turn off their phones and parents to turn off all devices Because nowadays to think of anything that would have kids (wanting) to get offline, it’s just so surprising and also so hopeful.
“And Jennifer Garner told me that’s one of the (reasons why she) really wanted to make this movie, is that there is hope that people want to spend time with each other and appreciate each other and really be present with each other.”
Filming gave the cast a few weeks of fun. The younger actors got to go on the rides continuously during the three-day shoot at Magic Mountain and fling in excess of 30,000 water balloons during the five days filming that scene in a park north of Pasadena, where Nat Faxon’s (“The Way Way Back”) character got pummeled. And Ramirez, best known for roles in action films, got to try his hand at comedy
“It’s always such a pleasure when you take a dramatic actor and give him a free rein to have more fun,” Arteta says. “And Jen Garner was really helpful with that, encouraging him, making him feel safe to be silly. And we really lucked out that they loved each other and the kids and the five really loved each other. You hope for that kind of chemistry and you pray for it. You try to predict it. It doesn’t always happen but I think one of the reasons that there is sweetness in the movie is because they all really, really dug each other.”

Serena Wolf: From Ivy League to culinar y creator in 12 years
Serena Wolf is a multi-hyphenate culinary personality with a blog, a website, two cookbooks, video presences on YouTube and Instagram and online classes, all devoted to food and cooking. All of which came within the span of 12 years.
The daughter of “Law & Order” and “Chicago” franchise creator Dick Wolf, she graduated from Harvard in 2009 with a degree in sociology and no clue about what she wanted to do with her life. But a cooking class at the famed Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in Paris pointed the her toward her future. She fell in love and a culinary career was born.
Now, on her blog and website, domesticate-me. com, and in her live classes, she shows viewers how to make delicious, tasty recipes, breaking them down to make them more accessible and less intimidating. She also preaches to not be afraid to experiment.
“My overarching philosophy is always to foster creativity and build culinary confidence through empowering people with those basic skills that they need,” Wolf explains. “And I sort of think one of my strengths is the fact that when I did go to culinary school, I had no cooking background so I really had no bad habits to break. I was kind of a sponge. I was literally learning everything, I was building my culinary knowledge from the ground up And so I was kind of hyper aware of how things were taught effectively.”
Which is what she endeavors to do in her subscription online classes. Breaking her recipes down into teachable pieces in her classes over Zoom, the Long Island, N.Y., resident has her students cook along at home as she prepares a meal that can then serve as the family dinner So in the end, her

It’s a major convenience and win-win for all concerned.
“You have to make dinner anyway,” she reasons. “Why not make dinner with a professional and a bunch of other virtual friends once a week and make it part of your weekly traditions to try a new recipe and pick up some new skills?”
The inspiration for many of her recipes is her husband, Logan. She wanted to create healthier versions of foods he loved like chicken fingers and lasagna using leaner meats, whole grains and vegetables. In a blog post, she dubbed it “The Dude Diet,” which also became the title of her first cookbook. It caught on and eventually got her hired to create a menu for several members of the New York Giants. That led to a second book, “The Dude Diet Dinnertime.” And a whole lot more exposure.

Adapted from a successful South Korean TV format, Fox’s latest game show venture arrives with a somewhat inscrutable title, but it starts to make sense once the premise is revealed. Wayne Brady plays host to two teams of contestants who compete to see which is more successful at guessing the hidden talents of an array of mystery performers. And on this show, the “talents” can be anything from singing to spider-wrangling or firedancing. Coincidentally, Brady previously was the Season 2 winner of his show’s time slot neighbor, “The Masked Singer.”
