“Perr y Mason,” premiering Sunday on HBO
Any preconceived notion you might have of “Perry Mason” is about to be tossed out of court.
The most enduring image of novelist Erle Stanley Gardner’s iconic character surely is the urbane defense attorney played by Raymond Burr in a 1957-66 television classic that remains a staple of nostalgia-driven networks. However, a younger, scrappier Mason fuels a limited HBO series debuting Sunday, June 21. Executive-produced by Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan, and set in the Depression era, it casts Emmy winner Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”) in the title role while exploring Mason’s roots as an unconventional detective as much as a nascent lawyer.
“That is why I jumped at the opportunity,” the friendly Rhys confirms of helping to generate a new Mason. “When the initial call came, this strange thing went through my head: ‘Perry Mason?’ I realize more and more that I’d had a unique relationship to it without necessarily having a true grasp of what it was. I was aware of the (original) show, but in true recollection, I wasn’t sure that I ever watched it though my grandparents did.
“You feel like you know this identity of a trial lawyer who got everybody to confess on the stand,” adds Rhys, “but as soon as you heard that HBO was remaking ‘Perry Mason,’ you knew immediately,
‘Well, OK. That’s going to be a very different take.’ And it is. It’s the origin story of how he became a trial lawyer, and I thought, ‘Oh, how interesting.’
And then I read the first script, and that was that.”
Such other familiar characters as Della Street (now played by Juliet Rylance) and Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) also are reinvented by the “Perry Mason” reboot. John Lithgow (as Mason’s mentor in the law), Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) and Robert Patrick (“Scorpion”) are among the cast members as well. HBO-series veteran Tim Van Patten (“Game of Thrones,” “The Sopranos”) is the director and an executive producer of the show.
In preparing to play Mason, the Welsh-born Rhys – the real-life partner of his fellow “Americans” star Keri Russell – had a valuable resource in Tom Hanks while they made the recent movie “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” since Hanks had done the similarly styled 2002 film “Road to Perdition.”
“When you’re engulfed in something on this kind of scale, it’s hard not to believe the world you’re in,” Rhys reasons of the “Perry Mason” costumes and production design that are so evocative of the early 1930s. “You don’t see anything but hundreds of supporting actors in the costumes and cars, and whole streets have been made to look the way they were then, so it only strengthens the make-believe.”

Matthew Rhys of “Perry Mason” on HBO
“There is one show that Keri (Russell, Rhys’ par tner) ridicules me about often.
It’s called ‘Mountain Men.’ I often watch it in wonderment and think, ‘How do they do it?’ I just find comfor t in the simplicity of what they do. I find it enviable.”

Zachary Quinto of “NOS4A2” on AMC
“I just finished watching ‘The Last Dance,’ the Michael Jordan documentar y. I thought it was fantastic. I’ve been watching ‘The Americans’; I star ted watching ‘The Americans’ in quarantine because I hadn’t seen it before and so I’ve been watching that. I’ve been watching ‘Mrs. America,’ which I really, thoroughly enjoyed. I’ve been watching ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race.’ And then a lot of films.”

Celebrities who put their names on spirit brands generally fall into two categories – those who are merely doing an endorsement (and getting a nice passive revenue stream) and those who are invested in it.
It is those latter folks, those who have “skin in the game,” who love the liquor in question, have had a say in its design and care deeply about the craft of distilling. They really want to put their money into something they believe is a quality product.
And more and more of them are getting into the business, hoping to share their love of spirits with the buying public. Such as the following.
George Clooney, Casamigos Tequila: The Oscarwinning actor and producer and his pals restaurant mogul Rande Gerber and Discovery Land Company CEO Mike Meldman, came up with the idea for a tequila meant to be consumed “ on the rocks, by the shot and at times straight from the bottle.” Four years after its founding, the brand was so successful that Diageo bought it for $1 billion in 2017.
Sam Heughan, The Sassenach: The “Outlander” actor’s love of whiskey dates back to his teens in his native Scotland and through his Great Glen Company recently created what he believes is “the perfect whiskey blend,” one that pleases his palate and he hopes that of others. He even thinks his character of Highlands warrior Jamie Fraser would approve. “Jamie makes it,” he quipped.
Marilyn Manson, Absinthe Mansinthe: A 2000 vacation in the South of France with Johnny Depp introduced the controversial rocker to absinthe and he fell in love and created this Swiss-made spirit. Though greeted by mixed reviews, the brand did win a gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2008.

a $55 per quart price tag and a unique skull-shaped bottle.
Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, Dos Hombres Mezcal: The former “Breaking Bad” co-stars were in a New York sushi bar when they hatched the idea for this “perfect” artisinal mezcal, a unique blend of what they say is “the finest Espadin agave, hand-selected from the hillsides of a small village in Oaxaca, Mexico.” At over $60 a quart, it’s unquestionably top shelf
Ryan Reynolds, Aviation Gin: The “Deadpool” actor acquired a stake in this Portland, Ore.produced gin in 2018 after trying it and declaring it “best-tasting gin in the world.” What makes it distinctive? According to its website, it has a “much smoother, easier drinking flavor than typical London Dry gins.” You be the judge.

“John Candy: Behind Closed Doors” (Reelz documentary premiere, July 26) Canadian actor John Candy may not have been a typical leading man, but he had a sweetness and charm that made most moviegoers love him. One of the most popular comedy stars of the 1980s. Candy’s versatility was truly impressive, allowing him to play characters who ranged from hilarious to touching and even dramatic. But success didn’t come overnight for the actor, who died in 1994 at age 43.

Whose Line Is It Anyway?
In a new episode, host Aisha Tyler welcomes a returning guest, comic Jonathan Mangum, who joins cast regulars Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie in a series of improv games incorporating ideas provided by their live audience in the studio. After each round, Tyler doles out points to the players whose work she enjoyed the most, then declares a winner at the end of the episode, although the games themselves really are the whole point
8 p.m. on KQCW Penn & Teller: Fool Us
The guest illusionists may be new, but The CW clearly doesn’t believe in tampering with success as this hit reality competition series returns for Season 7. The basic premise is the same: Rising stars in the magic world perform one of their best tricks for veteran magicians Penn Jillette and Teller, who then try to crack the secret behind the illusion after just one viewing. If a magician is able to stump the duo, that stage wizard wins an appearance with the duo in their Las Vegas show.

Buried Worlds With Don Wildman
“Croatoan.” That single word, found carved into a fence, remains one of the lone clues to the fate of a 16th-century British colony known as Roanoake, where the population of this Virginia settlement vanished without a trace. A new episode called “Demon Woods” finds host Don Wildman visiting another Virginia town where paranormal activity has been spiking. After finding what may be a link to the “lost colony,” Wildman retraces the path of a mysterious relic to see whether dark magic spelled doom for the ill-fated settlers.

Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ new “Toni Morrison” offers an “intimate meditation” on the life, works and recurring themes of this masterful storyteller and Nobel Prize winner. Morrison’s personal story opens in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio, where she grew up, and leads her to ’70s book tours with Muhammad Ali and political front lines with Angela Davis. The film also features interviews with Davis, poet Sonia Sanchez, writers Fran Lebowitz, Walter Mosley and Hilton Als, and Oprah Winfrey, who turned Morrison’s novel “Beloved” into a feature film.
7 p.m. on TRAVEL Ghost Adventures
A new episode called “Voices of the Dead” finds Zak Bagans, Nick Groff and Aaron Goodwin trying to help a colleague of sorts — another paranormal investigator — and his family find closure after they suffer a traumatic loss. After they do what they can, the guys then head to the Great Lakes to investigate reports of demonic activity at a historic hotel.

7 p.m. on HGTV Hot Mess House
Organization expert and coach Cassandra Aarssen provides tips for individuals and families who are feeling overwhelmed by household clutter and chaos in this new self-shot series, which premieres tonight with two backto-back episodes. Each half hour opens with Aarssen taking a virtual tour of a client’s home, which typically is out of control via overflowing playrooms, stuffed kitchens and impassable, jam-packed basements. In addition to offering practical help, Aarssen also occasionally delivers emotional payoffs, as with a teary woman who uncovers an engagement ring she thought was lost forever.
8 p.m. on KQCW Bulletproof
Bishop and Pike’s (Noel Clarke, Ashley Walters) search for a missing girl leads them to Amsterdam, where they stumble upon a sizable human-trafficking ring run by the Markides family in the new “Episode 3.” Meanwhile, the Unit tries to exploit escalating tensions among Alex, Mikey and Eleanor (Stavros Zalmas, Ben Tavassoli, Gina Bellman).

8:30 p.m. on KOTV Broke
A canceled birthday bash isn’t the only melancholy note in the episode “Sammy’s Party,” which also serves as the series finale for this freshman sitcom. When the original plans to celebrate young Sammy’s (Antonio Corbo) big day fall through, his relatives rush to set up an impromptu backyard party, where an unexpected guest catches everyone off guard. Meanwhile, Javier and Elizabeth (Jaime Camil, Natasha Leggero) decide to look for their own place. Kyle Bornheimer reprises his recurring guest role; Pauley Perrette also stars. 9 p.m. on FREE The Bold Type Sutton (Meghann Fahy) struggles painfully with her complicated reactions to all the huge changes in her life in a new episode called, appropriately, “Lost.” Urged on by Kat (Aisha Dee), a reluctant Jane (Katie Stevens) dips a toe back into the dating pool. Meanwhile, Kat is forced to turn to Alex (Matt Ward) for help as she tries to decide on her next move in the face of mounting financial insecurity.

7 p.m. on KOTV 47th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards
Like most ceremonies taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic, the 47th Daytime Emmy Awards will be a virtual affair, with winners making their acceptance speeches remotely from their homes. One bright spot? At least these awards are back on broadcast television, after languishing on streaming social platforms in recent years. CBS, the toprated network in daytime since 1986, currently is home to the top two game shows (“Let’s Make a Deal” and “The Price Is Right”) and soap operas (“The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful”).
9 p.m. on KOED Great Performances
Emmy- and Golden Globewinning actress Christine Lahti stars as feminist pioneer Gloria Steinem in the new “Gloria: A Life” featuring an all-female cast playing both male and female roles. Playwright Emily Mann devotes Act 1 to a chronicle of Steinem’s life, particularly in terms of her path to activism. Act 2, however, changes format to a “talking circle” with the audience, moderated by Steinem herself, to discuss some of the play’s themes.

Movie: The Wrong Housesitter
Dan has barely moved into the home of his dreams when his editor has to send him on an out-of-town assignment. Luckily for him, he’s just become friends with Kristin, who strikes Dan as the sort of stable, responsible person who would make a perfect house sitter. Dan is terribly, terribly wrong about that, and while he’s away, Kristin really makes herself at home in his house, with no plans for ever leaving it — or Dan. Vivica A. Fox, JasonShane Scott and Anna Dobbins star in this 2020 melodrama.

Movie: Doctor Sleep
Mike Flanagan, who previously directed the acclaimed 2018 TV adaptation of “The Haunting of Hill House” for Netflix, followed that up by writing, directing and editing this 2019 adaptation of Stephen King’s 2013 literary sequel to his chilling masterwork “The Shining.” Ewan McGregor stars as the now-adult Danny Torrance, who is trying to recover from the chronic alcoholism he fell into to mute his psychic power when he starts getting telepathic messages from a young girl (Kyliegh Curran) who also has a shining. Rebecca Ferguson and Cliff Curtis also star.
