‘Big Shot’ gets a little attitude adjustment in
A driven college basketball coach gets a lesson in humanity when he’s forced to head up a girls highschool team in a comedy/drama series upcoming on Disney+.
In “Big Shot,” premiering Friday, April 16, John Stamos (“Fuller House,” “ER”) is cast in the role of Mar vyn Korn, whose quick temper got him ousted as coach of Wisconsin’s men’s hoops team after he threw a chair at a referee. To salvage his career and professional reputation, he takes a job at The Westbrook School for Girls, an elite private institution and a far cr y from his days in the Big 10. But the gig also offers him the opportunity to step out of his comfort zone, re-examine his priorities and make changes for the better as he learns to work with a different kind of athlete – and they with him.
Created by David E. Kelley (“Big Little Lies,” “ The Undoing”), Dean Lorey (“iZombie,” “Harley Quinn”) and Brad Garrett, the series also stars Jessalyn Gilsig (“Glee”) as assistant coach Holly Barrett and Yvette Nicole Brown (“Community) as school headmaster Sherilyn Thomas.
For Stamos, “Big Shot” entailed a major learning cur ve as he readily admits his lack of basketball knowledge coming in was almost comical.
“I sort of panicked when I heard it was about basketball,” he explains, “but I dug into that part of it as much as I could. I went

to a rehearsal with (Los Angeles Lakers great) Jerr y West. I guess they call it a practice, but I called it a rehearsal, and that was the first moment he gave me a dirty look. And then I thought that his team (was) the Clippers. I thought they were a college team, and that didn’t go over well.
“But I really took it as a challenge, honestly,” he continues, “because it was just such a character that I’ve never played and it was the first character that I’ve been offered that everybody is talking about him like how unlikable he is and what a crab he is and he’s not a nice person. So I dug into that.”
As it evolves, the relationship between Mar vyn and his new players becomes symbiotic – he learns to treat them as more than X’s and O’s and they get a lesson in professionalism and taking themselves seriously For Lorey, this is a fish-out-of-water stor y about second chances.
“Even though it’s a basketballthemed show, we wanted to make it very character-driven,” Lorey explains,“ and we wanted to make sure that we never showed a basketball game that wasn’t advancing some sort of major character stor y or something like that So we’ve tried to make it really character-driven, and we tr y to find a nice balance between drama and comedy on the show as well. My background is primarily comedy, and so between David and I, I think we’ve found a nice balance.”

Martha Stewart has had her hands in so many television and retail ventures over the years, one might say she’s practically a cottage industry.
But that would be inaccurate. With her Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia brand, she became an actual industry.
Her newest TV endeavor comes this week on Food Network with “Chopped: Martha.” Premiering Tuesday, April 13, the hourlong stunt series finds Stewart presiding over the competition at an outdoor kitchen in Kennebunkport, Maine, as chefs are challenged in three rounds – appetizer, entree and dessert – to make delicious creations from a basket of mystery ingredients.
But they’ll need to adapt on the fly as Stewart has carte blanche to change the rules without notice and even take control of the clock. The winner of each episode, as determined by Stewart and fellow judges Marc Murphy and Marcus Samuelsson, advance to the finale and compete for a $50,000 grand prize.
It’s the latest step in a career that has seen Stewart dominate the culinary/homemaking/design landscape on television for three decades. The following are a few of her other more noteworthy projects.
“Martha Stewart Living” (1993-2004, syndicated): Stewart arguably made her name on TV with this half-hour series based on the same-named magazine, in which she presented segments on cooking, gardening, craft making and decorating. The show left the air in 2004 after Stewart was convicted and sentenced in a stock-trading case.

“Martha” (2005-12, syndicated and Hallmark Channel): Also titled “The Martha Stewart Show,” this variety/talk offering represented Stewart’s return to daytime television and like its predecessor featured culinary, craft-making and decorating segments as well has conversations with celebrity guests. Rising costs forced Hallmark to shutter production in 2012.
“Today” (1996-present, NBC): Hosts may have come and gone, but Stewart continues to be a presence on the iconic morning franchise with her regular segments on cooking, crafts and gardening.
“Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Party Challenge” (2016-19, VH1): In an odd pairing, Stewart joined rapper and marijuana advocate Snoop Dogg for this cooking series in which they put their personal spins on dishes for themed dinners and drinks with celebrity guests including Seth Rogen, Wiz Khalifa, Kathy Griffin and Robin Thicke. A little too much fun was had by all.

Marking an end to China’s Cultural Revolution, during which Western music was banned in favor of politically themed works, the Philadelphia musicians’ tour ignited a major onset of “Beethoven fever.” Classical pianist Lang Lang and Metropolitan Opera music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin are among the musicians who share how Beethoven’s music shaped their own careers.
