‘Rebel’ upbraids misbehaving corporations in ABC drama series

Free Water Analysis

Annie “Rebel” Bello is the kind of woman you want on your side in a street fight.

As played by Katey Sagal (“ The Conners”) in the ABC drama series “Rebel,” premiering Thursday, April 8, she’s a brilliant blue-collar legal advocate who drives a pickup truck and fights passionately for causes she believes in. She’ll also do almost anything to make sure she gets those she helps their due, such as confronting CEOs of irresponsible corporations at stockholder meetings.

While husband Grady (John Corbett, “Northern Exposure”) admires her zeal and daughter Cassidy (Lex Scott Davis, “Training Day”) has inherited it, her tendencies can prove exasperating for associates such as Julian Cruz (Andy Garcia, “City Island,” in his first role as a series regular), the powerful attorney with whom Rebel consults, and ex-husband Benji Ray (James Lesure, “Las Vegas”), a corporate lawyer and natural adversary for her

The series was created and executive produced by Krista Vernoff (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Station 19”) and is based on the life of activist Erin Brockovich, who is also an executive producer here.

Sagal, whose long resume runs the gamut from comedy (“Married With Children,” “8 Simple Rules”) to drama (“Sons of Anarchy,” “Boston Legal”), was attracted to the series for its blend of those elements and for the bold, don’t-take-no-for-an-answer nature of Rebel, whose lack of a law degree the actress says gives her character license to pull outrageous stunts.

“I think what I love so much about Rebel is she can cross a few lines,” Sagal says. “She can go outside the box. She can push where maybe I guess it wouldn’t be within legal bounds. I mean, not that she’s illegal, but she just pushes a little bit further

“And I think that she takes the best,” she continues. “To me it feels like she gathers knowledge from everywhere. I mean, she just takes it all. And then her primar y purpose is to do the right thing, is to fight for the right thing. And I think sometimes legal mumbo jumbo can make that a little bit confusing when it’s actually a very straight line in terms of what’s right.”

In preparing for the role, Sagal decided to meet Brockovich for lunch, not so much to talk about the nuts and bolts of advocacy but to pick up on her energy.

“I got it just sitting and hanging out with her,” Sagal says, “because clearly the passion and the fire comes even over lunch.”

Brockovich, whose career as an environmental activist was brought to life by Julia Roberts in director Stephen Soderbergh’s 2000 legal drama “Erin Brockovich,” thinks her doppelganger got the performance right.

“It’s her energy. It’s her presence ... ,” Brockovich says. “It’s like, ‘I’m a badass.’ She’s it. She gets it. So it’s just there.”

Adhir Kalyan of “United States of Al” on CBS

“Whilst I’ve been working on the show, my wife and I have mainly been watching a lot of documentaries. And we’re sor t of crime fiends and specifically fiendish about crime stories that have unfolded in Los Angeles ... . So we just got done with ‘The Night Stalker’ and then twice had watched ‘The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel.’ So those are like the most recent things we saw That might be a morbid answer now that I think about it but there you have it.”

Tyler Hoechlin of “Superman & Lois” on The CW “ ‘Peaky Blinders.’ It’s my favorite, and it’s what I unwind with.”

Andy Garcia and Katey Sagal star in “Rebel,” premiering Thursday on ABC.

Sipping with the stars: Highly rated, celebrity-branded wines

If you’re looking for a nice syrah to pair with dinner or just a light pinot grigio to enjoy with an intimate gathering, we have a few famous friends who can offer recommendations.

Indeed, these are celebrities who have turned their love of wine into a business and putting their names and/or money where their incredibly discriminating palates are. And while some are better than others, many are worth your time and hard-earned cash. The following are a few to consider.

Jim Nantz, who this week calls the Masters Tournament for CBS, has been making wine with his partner Peter Deutsch since 2009 and the result is The Calling (www.thecallingwine.com) of Sonoma Valley, Calif., which produces high-quality cabernet, chardonnay and pinot noir with prices ranging from $32 to $70. In fact, its 2014 Fox Den Vineyard pinot was a favorite of Wine Enthusiast, which rated it a 91.

The Francis Ford Coppola Winery (www francisfordcoppolawinery.com) of Napa Valley, Calif., has developed a loyal following over the years with its myriad varieties of wines and its Sofia sub-brand that has also made inroads. Some have movie themes (the Apocalypse Now red blend; the Director’s Cut line) while others are named for family members (the Eleanor red after his wife; Sofia for his fellow filmmaker daughter) and prices range from $12 to $120. Stars include the 2017 Sofia Blanc de Blancs and a 2014 Black Label Claret Diamond cabernet sauvignon, which Wine Enthusiast gave a 90.

Washington State native Kyle MacLachlan also has a passion for the grape as owner and vintner of

Jolie enjoyed a shared love of wine and in 2011 they bought a French estate in Provence and created Chateau Miraval (www.miraval.com), which specializes in rosés. In fact, its Cotes de Provence rosé was named one of the top 100 wines in the world by Wine Spectator in 2012. Since sales are mainly to restaurants, prices are not listed on its website. And if you’re looking to blow a little money, look no further than Armand de Brignac (armanddebrignac.com), a partnership between rapper Jay-Z and Moet Hennessy Its champagnes are decidedly high end with prices starting at $200 and its star being the Brut Gold, which clocks in at around $299 and a 93 rating from Wine Spectator in 2016.

Movie: The Ten Commandments

Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner and Anne Baxter star in director Cecil B. DeMille’s final film, the 1956 biblical epic about the life of Moses. The picture’s first-rate visual effects include the parting of the Red Sea — and bear in mind what a wonder that was for moviegoers at the time, well before the computer-generated effects of today. Yvonne De Carlo, Nina Foch, John Derek and Vincent Price co-star, with little Fraser Heston as the infant Moses.

7 p.m. on LIFE

Movie: Robin Roberts

Presents: Mahalia

The first project produced under a partnership between “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts and Lifetime, this new biopic chronicles the life and career of one of America’s greatest Black gospel singers. Even during a strife-torn period in U.S. history riddled by racial segregation, Jackson enjoyed incredible success in her music career. She also devoted time to political activism, however, and was a personal friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his family. Danielle Brooks (“Orange Is the New Black”) takes the title role. Kenny Leon is the director.

With Maggie (Lauren Cohan) now back at Alexandria, Carol (Melissa McBride) takes Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) on a journey, hoping to provide a release valve that may minimize the increasing tension as Season 10 draws to a close with a finale called “Here’s Negan.” In flashbacks, Negan reflects on his late wife, Lucille (Hilarie Burton, Morgan’s real-life wife), and the dire chain of events that led him to this point.

8 p.m. on TBS TNT 27th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

Simulcast with TBS, the annual ceremonies honoring the best performances in film and television for the past calendar year are broadcast live from Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Among this year’s nominees, productions receiving the most acting nods include “The Crown,” “Ozark” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Also noteworthy, Chadwick Boseman, who died last August of colon cancer at age 43, received a staggering four posthumous nominations, for his starring role in “Ma Rainey” and his supporting turn in “Da 5 Bloods,” plus his ensemble work in both films.

9 p.m. on KOTV NCIS: New Orleans

After someone hurls a Molotov cocktail into Pride’s (Scott Bakula) bar, evidence leads him directly to longtime nemesis Sasha Broussard (guest star Callie Thorne) in the new episode “Once Upon a Time.” Their tense reunion reveals she has been keeping a secret that will change Pride’s life forever. Elsewhere, Tammy (Vanessa Ferlito) demonstrates her shockingly accurate profiling skills on Hannah and Carter (Necar Zadegan, Charles Michael Davis). The guest cast also includes Jason Alan Carvell.

Struggling chefs submitted by their own restaurants get put through some grueling challenges by restaurant culinary director Cliff Crooks to help assess their real-world kitchen expertise and address much-needed areas of improvement. Each episode finds three under-performing professional cooks arriving at Crooks’ boot camp, where he first has them prepare their signature dishes to demonstrate their abilities. Next, the chefs must show their command of essential kitchen skills, then work a live dinner service in one of Crooks’ eateries. Finally, they’re challenged to create a new dish.

7 p.m. on LIFE

Movie: Tyler Perry’s Acrimony Tyler Perry wrote, directed and produced this 2018 psychological thriller starring Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”) as Melinda, a devoted wife who is content to support her engineer husband, Robert (Lyriq Bent), as he struggles to find a buyer for his innovative battery design. Eventually, however, Melinda realizes that her self-absorbed spouse is merely using her as a human ATM machine while he looks elsewhere for romance. Crystle Stewart, Ptosha Storey, Jazmyn Simon and Ajiona Alexus also are featured.

9 p.m. on SYFY Wynonna Earp Series creator Emily Andras breathed audacious new life into Beau Smith’s supernatural comic book series, producing a sassy, genre-defying Western horror comedy with a defiant femalecentric take on the occasionally violent action. The show’s true life force, though, came from leading lady Melanie Scrofano, whose portrayal of the title character — the cranky great-greatgranddaughter of Wild West lawman Wyatt Earp — has been a peppery joy from start to finish. Fan favorites Tim Rozon and Varun Saranga, among others, likewise helped carry the show, which ends its four-season run tonight.
