Fans should expect just about anything from a band called Wild Card.
The Muskogee area trio will show such variety at 6 p.m. Thursday with a Christmas Extravaganza at Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
OMHOF Executive Director Jim Blair said Wild Card is “probably the most versatile three-piece band in this area.”
“They play anything from classic rock to country to ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s,” Blair said. “They just kind of cover a lot, and they do it very well.”
Blair said fans should expect to “get up and move” when Wild Card plays.
“They’re a very entertaining band, but they’ll also make you want to get up and move,” he said.
Singer and drummer Johnny Winkle said the band will play some holiday favorites.
“We have taken it upon ourselves to actually learn some traditional Christmas music to

put on this show and have some fun with it,” Winkle said. “We’ve got a couple we’ve done for several years now. ‘Please, Come Home for Christmas,’ which is a Charles Brown tune from 1961.”
Then, there’s the “Chestnuts roasting” known as “The Christmas Song,” he said.
“It just seems like there was a lot of good songs before, during and after World War II, a lot of really good Christmas tunes coming out that I enjoyed,” Winkle said. “Way it always strikes me is that the songs in that era were written for the soldiers, ‘We hope you’re going to be able to come home for Christmas.’ So, we’re going to dedicate all our Christmas stuff to the guys who are over

Growing program brings a ‘bit of everything’ to the performance

“A Night of Christmas Music” brings a variety of groups and soloists to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Musicians gather for the 34th time at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Program coordinator Eddie Yadon said the performance features “a little bit of everything.”
“It’s just a night of solos, ensembles, bell choir, bagpipes, brass, the Hallelujah Chorus,” he said.
Returning groups include the
Presbyterian Church of Muskogee handbell choir and the a capella group Okie-Pella.
Yadon said the program was created to bring Christmas cheer.
“This thing got started when we built the second phase of our building,” Yadon said. “The bishop wanted me to put together a community Christmas thing. I threw it together at the last minute, just to appease him. And it’s gone off so well that 34 years later, we’re still doing it.”
Yadon said the production has gone by various unofficial names.
“Everybody calls it Eddie’s Night of Christmas. That is not what I had

called it all those years ago,” Yadon said.
Steve Wiles, who leads the handbell choir and plays trumpet at the event, said the performance
has been called “the thing at Eddie’s church.”
It also has grown.
“Last year, we had to open the back curtain. People were sitting in the cultural hall, where all the food was, because there was nowhere to put everybody,” Yadon said.
Several acts have returned year after year.
Yadon said bagpipe player Rick Ewing used to play solo on Night of Christmas Music.
“He would just play a medley of Christmas tunes and tell about bagpipes,” Yadon said.
Ewing later invited fellow pipers

and drummers.
The ensemble added brass and organ, creating what Ewing and Yadon said has become a yearly favorite “Highland Cathedral.”
Yadon said bagpipes can get loud.
“And when we have six of them up there, that is really the highlight of the evening,” he said.

Ewing said eight bagpipers came last year.
“Last year, in that one piece, we probably had 20 people, maybe more” in the whole ensemble, he said.
Ewing compared the Night of Christmas to Symphony in the Park, held each June at Honor Heights Park.
“It’s a bit of Americana that is slowly disappearing,” Ewing said. “This is true
Christmas. You see everything from little Jimmy playing his first public piano piece to seasoned and accomplished musicians who have been performing for decades. It runs the entire gamut of citizens, of real people.”

there fighting right now.”
Wild Card won’t do all Christmas music, however.
“Most of the stuff that we’re trying to do is in the vein of Big Band era or Rockabilly stuff,” Winkle said. “We do a wide variety of music already, rock ‘n’ roll, country-western, blues, R & B, a little bit of disco.”
Eddie Lienhart, who plays guitar and keyboards, said they’ll play a mixture of their songs.
“We never know exactly what we plan to do for a show until we get there,” he said. “We kind of touch on a little bit of everything, keep the music as something everybody will like. We have played for every kind of crowd you can come across.”
Blair said Wild Card is one of his favorite area bands.
“I’ve taken them to Nashville at least twice,” he said. “They’re kind of
my go-to party band. I cannot say enough good about them.”
Bass guitarist Bill Morgan agreed, the group is versatile.
“We’ll do something everybody will like,” he said. “We’ll play for every kind of crowd you can think of.”
Wild Card members say one reason for their good sound is longevity.
Winkle said the band has been around for 20 years in various forms.
“We started as a fourpiece, lost one, grabbed another,” he said. “This particular line-up has been together since 2000.”
Lienhart said he enjoys performing with Winkle and Morgan.
“Both are excellent musicians,” he said. “We all have basically the same tastes of music. We’re all on the same page, pretty much. That’s what keeps the band together. We see eye-to-eye on a lot of stuff.”

Holiday fun varies from home to home, but it can entail hanging out with friends, playing games with family, skating at Snowflake Ice Rink, or driving to look at lights.
The Christmas break from school can also include a Winter Reading Program, Dec. 20, 2017 through Jan. 3, 2018, at the Tahlequah Public Library, 120 S. College Ave.
Several events and activities will educate and entertain attendees, who are asked to sign up due
to the limited space.
Those who enjoy craft projects will enjoy the next day’s activity. A Come ‘n’ Go Craft event will offer family fun opportunities on Thursday, Dec. 21, beginning at 10 a.m.
“We’ll go until there’s no more supplies,” said Newton. “It’s for all ages.”
The craft is decorating two different reindeer ornaments and a snowman ornament.
While the activity will be on going throughout the day, participants can determine how long to stay and enjoy the crafts.

Though she isn’t singing on television as consistently as she once did, that doesn’t mean the spirit has left Lea Michele.
The “Glee” and “Scream Queens” alum, currently costarring in the Tuesday ABC comedy “The Mayor,” visited Southern California’s legendary Disneyland recently to tape musical segments for a couple of that network’s holidayseason specials. The first aired in primetime last month, and the second – “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Celebration” – will fill ABC’s traditional Disney-special slot on Christmas morning, Monday, Dec. 25.
“We did a bunch of ‘Glee’ Christmas episodes as well as a ‘Glee’ Christmas album,” the lively Michele reflects, “so when they asked, ‘What songs would you like to sing?,’ I just had a
whole repertoire of Christmas songs that I’ve performed in the past. It was easy for me to pick my favorites.” (For the Christmas Day show, Michele’s choice is “Let It Snow.”)
Featuring the Very Merry Christmas Parade that long has been a Disney Parks and ABC holiday staple, the “Celebration” also includes performances by Jason Derulo, Ciara, Darius Rucker, Fifth Harmony, 98 Degrees, Fitz and the Tantrums, and “Aladdin” stage stars Telly Leung and Arielle Jacobs. Two people with “Dancing With the Stars” ties, dancer-turned-judge Julianne Hough and recent contestant (and 98 Degrees member) Nick Lachey, are the hosts; Jesse Palmer (“Daily Mail TV”) serves as co-host.
“It was just the most beautiful backdrop,” Michele notes, “right in front of the Magic Castle. That was sort of my fantasy as
an eight-year-old girl. If I could go back in time and tell myself as a child that one day, I would be singing in front of that castle dressed up like a princess ... well, it was definitely one of those ‘pinch me’ moments.”
Adding that the Disneyland staff “took such great care of me,” Michele confirms she’s no stranger to the iconic site. “I used to go to Walt Disney World once a year as a child on the East Coast, and I go to Disneyland at least twice a year – and I’ve lived in Los Angeles for 10 years. I spent my 30th birthday at Disneyland, I’ve taken friends there for their birthdays, I’ve spent Christmases there.”
Indeed, Michele muses that she’s “a Disney pro” in terms of knowing related information: “We had a lovely guide named Marvin (while taping the holiday specials), and he was giving us all these facts about the

park. And I knew all the facts! He was like, ‘OK. Do you want to take over my job?’ I love it there. It never gets old for me, truly never.”
That affinity is even more appropriate for Michele now.
“The Mayor” – on which she plays the title character’s (Brandon Micheal Hall) chief of staff – is an ABC Studios production, so along with it airing on ABC, she has become part of the Walt Disney Company family.
“I’ve always been a fan of ABC,” she maintains. “I’ve devoted Thursday nights to Shondaland (the network’s Shonda Rhimes-produced dramas) for as long back as I can remember. I moved to Los Angeles because I wanted to be on ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ and then I got ‘Glee,’ which was incredible. I still would love to be on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ these many years later.”

He’s one of the most thought-about people during the holiday season, though he isn’t real. But what if George Bailey was?
As played by James Stewart, the central character in the Frank Capra-directed 1946 movie classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” – again getting its traditional Christmas Eve showing Sunday, Dec. 24, on NBC – popularized a notion that’s been used since in countless television-series episodes: “How would life and the people I know be different without me?”
Imagine for a moment that George actually did exist, that he still was around, and that he was asked for an update on his life ... .
“It really has been a wonderful life,” Bailey says. “If I hadn’t gone through what I did back then, particularly with the people I love seeming not to know who I was, I don’t know that I would have appreciated them – or the world – as much as I have.”
Bailey isn’t surprised that his story has had so much resonance with people for more than seven decades: “I think that, at one time or another, just about everybody wonders what they’d do with a second chance at life if they got it. Avoid the mistakes you made the first time, be more considerate of others, and just make the most of every opportunity you’re given.”
Does Bailey think often about Clarence, the then-novice angel who showed him the way back from the brink of desperation?
“Oh, sure. How could I not? Without Clarence doing what he did, I would have missed out on so much – and I probably wouldn’t be here today. And you can only imagine how I feel every time I hear a bell ring.”
Born: 1907
Birthplace and current residence: Bedford Falls, N.Y.
Family info: Wife Mary; children are Pete, Janie, Zuzu and Tommy
Favorite saying: “Remember, no man is a failure who has friends.”
What he thinks of James Stewart as an actor:
“Well, if they ever make a movie about me, he’s the guy I’d want playing me if he was still here. Just very downto-earth and well-meaning. You always could see the goodness in him, and even if things didn’t go right for the people he played, you just knew in your heart that it wasn’t really their fault. Now that I think about it, it kind of reminds me of ... me.”
Favorite movie: “I like ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’ and ‘Meet John Doe.’ Very hopeful stories. Directed by that Capra fellow, weren’t they?”
Favorite television series: “Well, of course, there wasn’t any television in my younger days, but I’d have to go with the first show I remember liking ... ‘I Love Lucy.’ Still as good today.”

Through four seasons of “Booze Traveler,” host Jack Maxwell has traveled the world to places as varied as Turkey, Argentina, Australia, Iceland, New Zealand and South Africa to meet the locals and try whatever the popular drink is. But one episode this season of the Monday Travel Channel series holds special meaning for the South Boston native – and it took him right back to his old stomping grounds.
On Sept. 8, 2017, Maxwell lived a childhood dream when the lifelong Red Sox fan got to throw out the first pitch of a game at Fenway Park against the Tampa Bay Rays to retired Sox closer Ryan Dempster, an experience he says was the thrill of a lifetime – and a little unsettling.
“I was just nervous,” Maxwell admits. “You know, so many fans there and I know it was live. It’s not like a TV show where you can redo takes. This was it, man. And he gave me great tips: Don’t overdo it. People try to throw it too fast. Don’t sail it. Because a couple of weeks before that, a guy was there and he hit a cameraman right in the groin. ... And he said people get up there and it’s just nerves. And it’s different than being on camera. That’s one thing. But the physical nerves of having to throw at pitch under that pressure. So it was about the baseball and the drink.”
And the drink on that day was the mojito, made with mint actually grown at the ballpark. Unbeknownst to many Boston fans, Fenway Farms, a 5,000-square-foot rooftop garden on the third base side of the stadium, has been producing lettuce, carrots, mint, peas, spinach, radishes, chard and other assorted vegetables since the spring of 2015 to be used in foods served to fans during games and special functions. The kinds of vegetables

grown vary with the time of year, and so in September mint was in season for Maxwell’s visit.
“It just made great mojitos,” he says, “and of course, mojitos happen to be one of my favorite drinks. It’s so refreshing and I had, I guess, an authentic one if you want to call it that, in Cuba. But being at Fenway and having a cocktail with a real live World Series champion who’s just a great guy, and then getting up there and throwing out the pitch, I just don’t want to overdo it but it was really, really wonderful.”
Other stops in the 16-episode fourth season include England, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Taiwan, Norway, Michigan, Arizona, the Pacific Northwest, the Rocky Mountains and Costa Rica, where Maxwell got to take in the Central American nation’s biodiversity, the culture’s pura vida (or “pure life”) philosophy of living and the cocktail of choice, the chicha.
“We drank with locals, the villagers,” he reports, “and they made chicha made from bacteria. And so you take a chance and say, ‘Well, they’ve been doing it for years and years. Let’s do it.’ And there’s a woman who’s 103 years old celebrating her birthday that day and says she had to stop drinking it, but that’s what helped her live so long.”

‘Who’

This year’s “Doctor Who” Christmas special, premiering Monday, Dec. 25, on BBC America, marks a milestone for the show.
Not only does this seasonal episode, “Twice Upon a Time,” mark Peter Capaldi’s final appearance as the 12th Doctor, it also climaxes with the debut of new star Jodie Whittaker, the first actress to portray the titular time lord. In fact, the episode features three (at least) incarnations of the Doctor, courtesy of one of those “timey-wimey things” this show does so cleverly.
“We discovered at the end of last season that (the 12th Doctor) is refusing to regenerate, because he thinks that maybe it’s time to die,” explains guest star Mark Gatiss, who also has both written and appeared in several previous

The producer/director responsible for such comic hits as “This Is 40,” “Trainwreck” and “Knocked Up” gets back to his stand-up roots in this special filmed earlier this year at the Montreal Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, in which he riffs on topics such as living with three women, the trials of binge-watching and trying to make former President Obama laugh, along with funny moments from his career.

episodes. “Then he unexpectedly meets his first incarnation (guest star David Bradley), who is heading through the snows of Antarctica, about to regenerate for the first time. Obviously, something strange is going on with time. I play an officer from the First World War who is kind of plucked out of time, and the trenches, and gets involved in the adventure.”
A lifelong “Doctor Who” fan himself, Gatiss says he’s thrilled to be a part of this episode, partly because it marks a creative changing of the guard. Steven Moffat, who has steered “Doctor Who“ since it came back in 2005 after an extended hiatus, is moving on to other things, with Chris Chibnall (”Broadchurch“) taking over the reins.

News that an actress would play the Doctor for the first time predictably sparked controversy among some fans, even though the show’s writers had somewhat paved the way for that development by having the Master – the Doctor’s chief nemesis, who also is a time lord – played by both John Simm and Michelle Gomez, among others.
Gatiss says it’s normal for fans to mourn the departure of a favorite Doctor, but such change is built into the creative DNA of “Doctor Who.”
“I’m on record as supporting the idea of a female Doctor years ago,” Gatiss says. “It’s a marvelous idea, and I think it will give the series a new lease on life. Fans of most things, but particularly ‘Doctor Who,’ can be extremely set in their ways. But if this series

didn’t thrive on change, then the TARDIS never would never have got out of the junkyard in episode one. That’s the point of the show.” What isn’t right, he adds, is to resist this change because of sexism.
“I think a lot of people are dressing up a desire to say ‘the Doctor has to be a man’ with what is actually just basic misogyny,” he says. “If you can accept that the central character is 2,000 years old, has two hearts and flies through time and space in a dimensionally transcendental police box, you should be able to accept that he can turn into a woman.
“I firmly believe that if you lose a few ossified fans along the way, they’ll be replaced by brand-new fans who may never have watched the show – and that’s fantastic.”

From Oscar-nominated screenwriter Simon Blackwell (“In the Loop”) comes this English comedy about a ne’er-do-well (David Mitchell) who sees his chance to finally shine when he inherits the family pub upon his father’s death. His plans are complicated when the foster child his family raised years ago returns to their lives — and he suspects the now-grown man (Robert Webb) intends to steal the business out from under him.

Ben Roethlisberger has a chance to do something few athletes do, and that is go out on top. That’s assuming that he’s even considering retiring after what will be his 14th NFL season, and that he wins a third Super Bowl. “Big Ben” will guide his Pittsburgh Steelers when they visit the Houston Texans on Christmas Day (December 25), which airs on NBC.
The Steelers and New England Patriots are once again on a crash course for the AFC Championship game. Of course, upsets can happen, but these are clearly two top teams in the conference. Roethlisberger’s numbers aren’t what they once were; his best season was in 2014, when he fell just short of throwing for 5,000 yards (4,952) with 32 touchdowns and only 9 interceptions. But, he is still the glue that holds the Steelers offense together. They’ve been more than good enough to take control of the AFC North Division, which they could have wrapped up by the time they take the field against the Texans.
“Big Ben’s” story is that of a classic American sports icon. A small-school quarterback at the college level out of the University of Miami in Ohio, the Steelers grabbed him with the 11th overall pick in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft; the same draft that gave us Phillip Rivers, Eli Manning and Larry Fitzgerald. Whether “Big Ben” retires or not remains to be seen. Right now, a trip to Minneapolis in February for Super Bowl LII is the focus.

Many women are familiar with the feeling of dread and intimidation they get when they bring their car to a repair shop, expecting to be taken for a figurative ride by a mechanic who sees dollar signs in what they think is an unenlightened customer.
It is for these ladies that Jessica Chou launched her YouTube channel “Jessicann.” Combining basic maintenance tips with common sense advice on dealing with car dealers and others, the Los Angeles native endeavors to show women that they can, indeed, do it themselves and to not be afraid to negotiate or ask questions when the situation presents itself.
“I am not a mechanic. I’m not a technician or anything. I’m not even a car enthusiast,” she says. “I always just say I’m a girl power enthusiast and that’s how I got started. ... So I got on YouTube myself and started watching other people’s videos of fixing an air filter or changing spark plugs or even a light bulb. And I just discovered it was a skill set that I was super proud to have and I started showing my girlfriends and they were all super excited about it.”
In each three to six minute tutorial, Chou walks viewers step by step through such basic tasks as changing oil and spark plugs, replacing tail lights and air filters, repairing a chipped windshield, restoring an oxidized headlight lens, detailing

and washing, and fixing a sagging headliner. She also shows how to negotiate with a dealer for the price of a new car.
Most of the work is done on her since-donated 2003 Volkswagen Jetta, which she says provided her with ample repair bills and thus motivated her to educate herself, try her hand at different jobs and eventually make the series.
These are strictly beginner level repairs and maintenance, so don’t expect more ambitious projects like brake, transmission or engine work. Those she’s happy to leave to the pros.
“I always tell people, ‘If you’re not going to do it because you don’t want to get your hands dirty, think about how much money you’re saving,’ ” she says. “... I was just standing in the lobby (of a car dealership) looking at their maintenance a la carte menu and an air filter was $75. That just blew me away because they’re usually $10 and it takes two minutes. And so when I tell this to women who come by, especially at the auto shows, they’re like, ‘Wait, what? It’s $10? I just paid $75 at the dealer.’
“So yeah, that’s really the extent of my expertise,” she continues. “And there are plenty of maintenance things to really do to a car that I think will keep me busy for a while.”
