PRESIDENT’S NOTE Dan Bouet

September was a big month for AZPCA, with a couple of major events that really brought our club together.

We kicked things off with a special celebration for PCA’s 70th Anniversary at The Vault in Scottsdale. Approximately one hundred members joined us for the program, with guest speakers from PCA National, and a great lineup of cars both inside The Vault and out in the parking lot where many members displayed their own. It was a fantastic way to mark this milestone. A huge thank you to Ron Evans for generously allowing us to use his business for the event at no cost to the club.

Next up was the largest Porsches ‘n Pancakes we’ve ever hosted, held at Anthem Country Club. We had approximately 185 members attend and nearly 100 cars on display an impressive turnout and a lot of fun. Thank you to Frank Grimmelman, our Director at Large, and his wife, Maria, for organizing this record-setting event.

Unfortunately, not everything went as planned. Our season-opening HPDE at Inde Motorsports Ranch on September 27–28 was cancelled last minute due to heavy rain and potential flooding on the access roads. It was a tough call, but one for everyone’s safety. A big thank you to CJ Dorland, owner of Inde, for allowing us to reschedule for early spring at no additional cost to the club a generous gesture we truly appreciate. We’re already looking forward to returning to Inde, and in the meantime, our next HPDE at Podium Club is on October 18. We hope to see many of you there.

Looking ahead, our annual Concours d’Elegance is coming up on November 1 at the Westin Kierland. The team has been working hard to make this a fantastic event. If you’ve ever thought about displaying your car judged or not this is a great opportunity to participate. We had a strong turnout of cars last year and are hoping to repeat that for 2025.

I also want to take a moment to thank all of our volunteers. Your time and energy behind the scenes are what make events like Concours and so many others possible. We’re still looking for a few more people to help out that day, so if you’re interested, we’d love to have you join the team.

Here’s to another great month ahead I look forward to seeing many of you at Concours and at our fall driving and social events.

From the EDITORS Gregg and Ali Bull

As the autumn breeze begins to settle over the Valley, we look back on a September packed with camaraderie, celebration, and unforgettable driving experiences. Our monthly members meeting at La Locanda Italian Bistro set the tone for a month of friendly gatherings and delicious Italian fare. The highlight for many was the PCA 70th Anniversary Celebration, where we reminisced over seven decades of Porsche passion and innovation (see story pages 26-29 for a full recap). The annual Porsche’s and Pancakes brunch at Anthem Golf and Country Club was another crowd-pleaser, combining great cars, great food, and great company with a record-breaking attendance.

We also ventured out for one of our annual charity events, driving to Cottonwood for a day of wine tasting, laughter, and supporting a worthy cause. These events brought our members together and reminded us what makes the AZPCA family so special community spirit and a shared love of all things Porsche.

Welcome Back, Valley Members!

With the return of cooler weather, we’re excited to welcome many of our members back to Phoenix and the Valley. October promises to be one of our busiest months yet, with a jam-packed calendar of events designed to engage, entertain, and connect our club community.

2026 AZPCA BOD Election Candidates

Director at Large

I grew up here, ASU graduate, then was Active-Duty U.S. Army as a career officer, serving in a wide range of roles including command in Armor, and senior staff positions mostly in strategic planning and global policy, focused in Europe (the majority of my time and assignments was in Germany, Italy, and France) with combat zone deployments in the Middle East. My final assignment was as the Army Attache at the US Embassy in Paris. I retired in 2020 and returned to Phoenix.

Since retirement from the Army, I have been the Global Account Manager for Military Sales at Michelin North America.

My Porsche CV:

30-year PCA member, with time in several regions, including Germany region, Alpine Mountain (Colorado), and Potomac Region in DC/Northern Virginia. Cars owned: 1975 911S, 1985.5 944, 1996 993, and currently 2010 Carrera S (997.2). I am a long-term “car guy” and Porsche Enthusiast. I tend towards the technical side of things, and do most of the work on my cars, spending a good amount of time to understand everything about the cars.

I feel I am uniquely positioned to serve as an “At Large” board member due to my widely varied and extensive activities and experience in the automotive enthusiast’s world.

2026 AZPCA BOD Election Candidates Director at Large

I've been in property management for close to 20 years with our families’ commercial properties. I am a long time Rotarian, Eagle Scout and a Porsche enthusiast (I only own 5 so Alpio has me beat). I am relatively new to the club, roughly 2 years ago my brother-in-law recommended we join. He mentioned that you were a fun group with awesome drives and committed to having a good time. Please consider me for the position of Director-at-Large.

2026 AZPCA BOD Election Candidates

Director at Large

Hello, my name is Michael, and I am a current member of the Porsche Club of America Arizona Region. My wife, Jia, our daughter, Cici, and I reside in Scottsdale. For the past 23 years, I've honed my leadership, business, and innovation skills, including 15 years as a software sales executive in Silicon Valley and the last three managing a private equity firm. My professional background, supported by a Master's degree in Management from Harvard, has equipped me with the skills to lead with a fresh perspective and help guide our club into the future.

My journey with Porsche began with a childhood fascination that has never faded. I’ll never forget the thrill of seeing my first Guards Red 911 Turbo Whale Tail, whoa! That fascination led me to my first Porsche a White 95B.1 Macan S with a Red interior, a car that led to my Guards Red 992.1 9112S, and today, Jia's White Cayenne and my Carmine Red Cayenne Coupe. To us, these cars are more than just vehicles; they are an integral part of our family and a source of shared passion. My own experience with a variety of Porsche models has reinforced my belief that every Porsche and every owner is a valued part of our club community.

Having recently stepped into the role of Social Activities Chair, I've had the unique opportunity to listen and learn from many of you. I am already enjoying planning major annual events like the Concours d'Elegance and the Holiday Gala. As your Board Director, my goal is to honor our club’s traditions while bringing new energy and a clear focus on the areas that matter most to our members, including championing inclusivity, enhancing accessibility, and enriching the membership experience.

My passion for Porsche runs deep, and I believe my commitment to this community is what makes me the right choice for this role. I am dedicated to serving our members and would be honored to earn your vote and the opportunity to help build an even more vibrant and welcoming community for all Porsche enthusiasts.

2026 AZPCA BOD Election Candidates Director at Large

Thank you for considering me for the position of Director At Large for the upcoming board season. I’m somewhat new to PCA, having joined in 2023 after purchasing my first Porsche. But my love of cars dates back to my early years collecting buckets of Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars.

My Porsche Background

Today, I own a 2022 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet in aventurine green, and a cobalt blue metallic 2006 Porsche Cayman S that has the coolest six-CD disk changer around.

You may have met me and my wife at the 2024 Annual Holiday Party at Las Sendas. We also took part in the Tri-Region Extravaganza in January 2024, including the mystery Sonoran Desert tour. I started my track career with a “Hooked on” Driving event years ago, tracked at AMP multiple times and participated in our autocross events as well. I’ve driven several HPDE events at Podium Club and am already registered for the Tucson INDE event and the autocross at Phoenix Raceway. All that said, a highlight of 2025 was my wife sitting navigator at the Prescott Valley Autocross event hosted by the PCA Mountain region – an experience she actually looks forward to repeating!

Why you should vote for me:

- I’m organized and love details, lists, budgets, and plans (spreadsheets and all)

- This would be my only volunteer effort for the year, meaning it gets my full attention

- Previously a firefighter and volunteer with Pinal Search & Rescue, I’m good in a crisis

- My novelist wife wants me out of the house more so she can write in peace

- I can talk to anyone and make them feel at home – car enthusiast or not

- I used AI to turn my cars into Transformer cartoons, and I can teach you

- I want to help more people discover our awesome community

My day job(s): Building structures that last I’m the Operations Director for Sunland Welding, a structural steel fabrication and installation business in Gilbert, AZ. Yearly, we move approximately 350,000 lbs. of steel like a finely choreographed dance. My role oversees project management, staffing, efficiency, safety, and innovation.

I’m also CEO of OILCO Liquid Handling Systems, based in Middletown, NJ. Our family pioneered the design and manufacture of the most extensive line of heavy-duty swivel joints available world-wide. Our products can be found in petroleum, waste water, steel mill, and coastal terminal systems around the world.

(Did I mention my wife wants me out of the house more?)

Thank you for considering me for the Director at Large spot!

2026 AZPCA BOD Election Candidates

Director at Large

As a Phoenix native and longtime car enthusiast, I’ve been a proud member of the Arizona Region PCA since 2017. My love for Porsche began at a young age, thanks to the iconic styling of the 911, and sparked what would become a lifelong appreciation for German engineering. During my high school and college years, I spent countless hours wrenching on BMWs and diving into the import tuning scene, which was hugely popular at the time and provided a low barrier to entry for young enthusiasts. Those experiences taught me the value of hands-on learning and community, but Porsche has always been my original passion.

In 2017, with some not-so-subtle encouragement from fellow AZ PCA members, I purchased my 2014 981S from another club member. Finally becoming a Porsche owner was a milestone I’d thought about for years but I wasn’t prepared for how quickly “just one” turned into “what if I made room for another?” Almost immediately after the purchase, I joined the PCA and realized how true the saying is: “Come for the cars, stay for the people.” What started as a personal goal quickly expanded into involvement with a welcoming community of people who share similar values and a passion for great cars.

While I’ve been involved with other car clubs over the years, I feel a strong pull to contribute more meaningfully to the Arizona PCA. I’m excited about the opportunity to serve as Director at Large and help strengthen the connections that make our region so special. I believe in building engaging experiences that are welcoming and accessible to all members whether they’re longtime enthusiasts or just discovering the joy of the Porsche marque.

Club Secretary

I am currently the Club Secretary and have been in this role for the past 2 years During that time, I have become very involved in our Club administration, activities and have helped foster the culture of the club.

By day I am an Aerospace Engineer and have been in the aerospace industry for over 35 years. I have had the opportunity to work on some fascinating projects over the years from Blue Origin’s maiden New Glenn Rocket launch to a successful Mars Rover landing to a very tricky Asteroid sampling mission.

My attention to detail has always served me well in my career and I believe it is a fundamental skill to continue to fulfill the role of Secretary for the club. I have been happily married for over 30 years to my beautiful wife Alison who is a big part of AZPCA too.

We purchased our 1995 Porsche 993 Cabriolet in May of 2021 and quickly joined AZPCA. During this time, we have thoroughly enjoyed participating in AZPCA events, volunteering, running Going Places, the Club Newsletter and we have met many wonderful members, many of whom have become close friends.

I believe that continuing in the position of Club Secretary would benefit both the club with continuity and would allow me to continue to develop even greater connectivity with our board and membership. I look forward to continuing to serve the club in the near future.

2026 AZPCA BOD Election Candidates

Club Treasurer

Marty Ercoline

I am the current Treasurer and I am asking our members to vote me back into this position so I can complete my role as AZPCA Treasurer. My wife Abby and I have been AZPCA members since 2014 and we are very active with the AZPCA organization. I bring years of experience serving large social clubs in various operational support positions. In my professional life, I manage my Wealth Management practice and I handle all types of monetary events daily.

When I stepped up to fill in for the prior Treasurer having left the Phoenix area, I got to work looking deep into how we were conducting our financials. I noticed that we were not operating by the PCA National operational guidelines and that we did not have electronic payment capabilities established for paying our vendors quickly and efficiently. I also realized our QuickBooks had been setup in a very cumbersome manner, making it difficult to obtain much needed balances and financial reports when needed. I also realized our club banking account information had not been updated for almost 10 years. First, I cleared up our Bank account profile and officer information. Secondly, I established electronic bill payment and Zelle services for our vendors and members. Third, I put in many hours to get our QuickBooks running much more efficiently and matched our club financial processes to the PCA Operations manual. We are now in compliance with National’s recommendations, we now have the ability to pay our invoices electronically within minutes, our bank accounts are current, and our QuickBooks is easier to manage with our key financial reports being more accurate. I’m planning to setup financial reports for each Director so they can manage their event cash flows with more accurate information.

I’ve been married to my wonderful wife Abby for 36+ years and we are avid Porsche owners.

I love to drive my 911’s and Abby loves to drive her Macan. We have two grown children who live and work in the Phoenix valley and are working hard to become Porsche owners. Abby and I like rescuing dogs and support multiple no-kill pet shelters.

2026 AZPCA BOD Election Candidates

Club Treasurer

I am writing to express my interest in the open Treasurer position on the board of the Arizona Chapter (AZPCA) of the Porsche Club of America.

With over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry, I am a seasoned executive with deep expertise in commercial real estate, private equity, and operational finance.

I have held senior finance roles, including Controller and CFO, across diverse industries such as commercial real estate, HVAC, hospitality, and automotive collision repair

I recently launched a diversified enterprise with James Huard and Danny Page, integrating automotive services and financial consulting. Established Aces Auto Care (domestic/Asian repair) and Aces Elite Auto Care (exotic vehicles), designed to capture diverse market segments in the automotive sector.

I founded Luxe Accounting Solutions, a boutique firm providing high-touch bookkeeping and CFO advisory services to small and mid-sized businesses. Responsible for strategic direction, capital structuring, brand development, and building scalable infrastructure for long-term growth.

I have also served as CFO of Sentinel Development for over seven years, where I worked closely with private equity firm, Westport Capital Partners, to reposition distressed commercial real estate assets.

I am also a lifelong Porsche enthusiast. My husband and I are avid collectors and currently own nine Porsches, including two highly cherished air-cooled models. This passion has deepened my appreciation for the Porsche community, its heritage, and the camaraderie it fosters.

Serving on the board would be both an honor and a dream come true. I believe my blend of financial acumen, leadership experience, and genuine enthusiasm for Porsche ownership uniquely position me to make a meaningful contribution to the Club. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I would be delighted to discuss how I can support the Club’s mission and serve its members in the role of Treasurer.

2026 AZPCA BOD Election Candidates

Club Treasurer

Steve Weddell

I am running for Treasurer of the club. I have been an active member since joining AZPCA in 2021 and have attended a number of HPDE, social events, and driving tours. My passion for the Porsche brand began as a teenager when a neighbor took me for a ride in his new 944. I currently have a 718 Cayman GT4 (manual) which I enjoy driving around town and on driving tours. My track car is a modified 718 Cayman GT4 (PDK) and you will often find me down at Podium Club.

I worked at Leslie’s Pool Supplies in Phoenix (2015 to 2023) where I served in various roles including Chief Financial Officer, Secretary, Treasurer, and member of the Board of Directors. During my tenure, I had responsibility for a number of areas including finance, accounting, internal audit, procurement, supply chain, manufacturing, information technology, human resources, and investor relations. I currently serve on the Finance Committee at Paradise Valley Country Club and have also served on the board of the Leslie’s Charitable Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central & Northern Arizona.

During my time with AZPCA, I have formed many new relationships, and it is evident that the members share a strong enthusiasm for the brand and the club. My commitment to you will be to actively listen to members, maintain fiscal responsibility and accountability, and collaborate with the board to continually improve the member experience. It would be a great privilege to serve you as Treasurer of the club and I appreciate your consideration

HAPPY 70TH ANNIVERSARY PCA

The stage was set for a perfect PCA 70th Anniversary Party and all the performers were ready.

We had a very generous AZPCA member, Ron Evans, offer up his amazing facility, The Vault to host this event.

We had some fantastic members volunteer to not only arrange this wonderful event, Frank Grimmelmann and Rook Younger take a bow, but also help make sure everyone got signed in without a hiccup. A big thanks to Maria, DeLynn and Jill just to mention a few.

DeLynn, Jill and Maria welcoming all the attendees and getting them signed in. Once through the doors guests were treated to an absolutely first-class event.

A bird’s eye view of the layout that Ron and all the volunteers orchestrated.

Our illustrious guest speakers were ready for action and they didn’t disappoint us.

Mark got things underway with his usual wit and zippy routine, for anyone that has attended a PCA Parade event you will be very familiar with his ability to command a crowd and make sure no one escapes his humor, he introduced Frank and invited him up to say a few words.

Frank started things off by thanking everyone involved in organizing the event especially Ron Evans and went through the highlights of the day’s activities and turned the mic back to Mr. MC himself Mark

Mark had some very interesting tales to share with us regarding not only his time with PCA but also his comrade in arms, Richard Strahola, the current PCA Treasurer.

Richard is no stranger to both the PCA and the AZPCA community, if you have ever gone to one of Alpio’s Cars n’ Coffee events you will have no doubt seen Richard rocking up in one of his prized Porsche’s. Richard shared with the group some of the amazing events coming up in the very near future, stay tuned for more information.

The next speaker up to chat about the history of PCA was none other than our own AZPCA world famous novelist Jim Bultema. Jim spoke at length about the unique beginnings of PCA from its humble first unofficial meeting in Bill Sholar’s house on February 8th, 1955 to its first official members meeting at Blackie’s House of Beef on September 13th, 1955 with only 12 members in attendance. Fast forward to 2025 and the PCA now has a staggering 167,000+ official members! WOW what a journey.

Next up was Ron Evan’s the host of our 70th anniversary party. Ron has always been a car enthusiast and when he decided he wanted to find a hobby before he “officially” retired from the medical profession he thought that starting a little car storage place would be a good idea. The Vault is a truly amazing facility and the business that Ron runs is a smooth as the engines in the cars that are stored under its roof. Ron gave us a little history of the origins of the Vault as well as some of the incredible Neon signs found throughout the building.

MC Mark Scheivitz Frank Grimmelmann Richard Strahola Jim Bultema

Ron and his team then opened up the buffet to the 100+ AZPCA members It was beautifully laid out with something for everyone.

While members enjoyed the incredible buffet they were treated to music by Allen Fenske Anyone that has visited Alpio’s Coffee n’ Cars will have seen and heard Allen’s wonderful guitar playing.

Thanks again to Ron for opening up his amazing facility to the AZPCA family.

Thanks to all of Ron’s backroom staff

We would also like to thank the unsung heroes who supplied us with all the amazing photos and music.

- Alex Rentzis at SpartaPhoto

- Jan Nyquist Photography

- Mark Baker (photos)

- Allen Fenske (guitar music)

And a big round of applause for all the Members’ who made it out to this event.

October’s Off-Road Adventure - Crown King

Off-Road Driving Tour & Lunch to Crown King

Thursday, October 9, 2025

The weather will be Porsche perfect for driving your Porsche SUV Four-Wheel Drive Vehicle on an off-road Tour up to Crown King high in the Bradshaw Mountains for a delicious lunch at the famous Crown King Saloon. Crown King was a former gold mining town dating back to 1875 and has a current population of 133.

The saloon has an interesting history and is one of the buildings still standing and in use in Crown King. The Crown King Saloon has maintained its place as the center of activity in town. The Saloon was originally constructed and operated in the nearby mining town of Oro Belle (now also a ghost town). In 1910, it was disassembled and brought to Crown King piece by piece after the mine at Oro Belle had played out. The building was home to a brothel and bar in both towns and now serves the public as a hotel, cafe, and bar.

The Tour is a 53 mile and a two-hour drive from the starting point in North Phoenix over an easy and safe all-weather off-road dirt trail. The Tour will traverse through the rugged beauty of the Bradshaw Mountains and route through the small communities of Bumble Bee and Cleater. Cleater is the home port for the Cleator Yacht Club. Yes, there is a yacht docked outside adjacent to the Bar & General Store.

The lunch and tour details are being finalized and will be published in the next issue of Going Places and posted on the Region’s Website with a MSR registration link. Please save the date and plan on joining other Region members enjoying their Porsche SUVs, or other NonPorsche SUV Four-Wheel Drive vehicles, for the day on the trail.

Ladies Drive to Tonto Natural Bridge

Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2025

Attention PCA Ladies! Pack a picnic lunch and bring your Porsche out for a mid-week drive on the Beeline Highway, up the Mogollon Rim from Payson, to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. This is a ladies-only drive, and Porsches only!

Bring a picnic lunch and a dessert to share. We have a covered ramada reserved just for our group, with parking for our Porsches adjacent to the ramada. Bring your sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots so you can best experience the trails and viewpoints throughout the park.

Tonto Natural Bridge is believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. There are hiking trails with several scenic viewpoints, and one trail takes you all the way to an observation deck in the creek bottom. The park provides a habitat where you are likely to spot deer, javelina, an active community of hummingbirds, and numerous other forest critters.

The historic Goodfellow Lodge features interpretive exhibits including artifacts on the history of Tonto Natural Bridge, information about travertine, and prehistoric inhabitants of the area. Park entry fee is $5 per car, payable when you enter the park.

Arizona Region Tech Session

ARIZONA REGION TECH SESSION

Saturday, October 25, 2025 8am – 10am

A Porsche Tech Session will be hosted by Arizona Region Sponsor/Member Jonathan Betancourt of Trackside Motorsports. Jonathan will cover the routine Porsche maintenance and service of the various mechanical items for the members to have a better understanding of why maintenance and service is critical for reliability, longevity and safe operation at the limit when participating in spirited driving, HPDE and Autocross events. This is geared towards members who prefer to perform their own maintenance and service on their own Porsche car.

About Jonathan: Trackside Motorsports was founded in 2020 by Jonathan. His passion for cars started out in high school with muscle cars. However, his true love of performance driving came when he acquired his first Porsche, a 2007 911 Carrera S and went to an HPDE event. He was instantly hooked! Since then, Jonathan has spent every spare moment figuring out what makes a car fast and fun on a racetrack. Jonathan became a certified Porsche Club of America Instructor in 2015 to further hone his driving skills and teach other people performance driving techniques.

You must register to attend and the maximum capacity will be limited to 25 Members There is no cost to register Refreshments will be provided for the members

FOGO de CHAO – Brazilian Steak House

Your Porsche club is excited to present, for the second time, one of Scottsdale’s most exclusive restaurants, FOGO de CHAO. Brazilian churrasco grilling is a traditional style of barbecue that is a popular method of cooking and dining, especially in churrascarias, which are Brazilian steakhouses. You won’t want to miss this one, one of the most exciting venues we have gotten for the club in three years.

Maximizing the Benefit of Porsche Ownership

Rich Andrade August, 2025

In late July through early August Betsy and I took a drive in our 2009 Porsche Cayenne covering over 3200 miles from Arizona to the most northwestern part of Oregon. I was determined to enjoy the Oregon Beaches to the maximum and make our Cayenne part of our experience. Porsche engineered the Cayenne to fulfill multiple agendas enabling spirited driving and off-road experiences Our first-generation Type 957 model has a locking front/rear two speed transfer case. For sandy beach conditions the differential ‘lowlock” gear 3 and 4 in low range were sufficient to keep us going.

Ft Stevens Beach Oregon Wreck of the Peter Iredale

My friend Mathias who is familiar with the Ft. Stevens area offered valuable recommendations for our trip. He offered extra credit for a photo of our Cayenne near the Peter Iredale. I passed the exam and earned a few more points!

Iredale in Seattle, circa 1900

Peter Iredale shortly after grounding in 1906

Peter Iredale August 2, 2025

The Peter Iredale was a four-masted steel barque that ran ashore October 25, 1906, on the Oregon coast en route to the Columbia River. She was abandoned on Clatsop Spit near Fort Stevens in Warrenton about four miles (6 km) south of the Columbia River channel. Wreckage is still visible, making it a popular tourist attraction as one of the most accessible shipwrecks of the Graveyard of the Pacific.

Sailing from Salina Cruz, Mexico, on or about September 26, 1906, Peter Iredale was bound for Portland, Oregon with 1,000 tons of ballast and a crew of 27, including two stowaways. The voyage up the coast was unremarkable until the night of 25 October, when Captain H. Lawrence sighted the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse at 3:20 a.m. local time. The crew altered course first east-northeast and then northeast to enter the mouth of the Columbia River in thick mist and a rising tide. Under strong winds out of the west, an attempt was made to wear the ship away from shore, but a heavy northwest squall grounded Peter Iredale on Clatsop Sands (now called Clatsop Spit). High seas and wind drove the ship ashore. A lifeboat was dispatched from Hammond, Oregon and assisted in evacuating the sailors, who were tended to at Fort Stevens. No casualties occurred in the accident.

Meet this Month’s Featured Member - Rich Andrade

1. When did you join PCA? I joined December 1, 1999

I was quite honored to get a nice letter and this nice citation in the mail from PCA National.

B. 1987 928 S4

Displayed at 2018 Rennsport Reunion VI. Purchased from a friend that three years prior I assisted with the purchase. It had 63,000 miles on it in 2004, currently has over 195,000 miles. I've driven it over 132,000 enjoyable miles in 21 years.

D. 1979 Euro Track 928

I purchased my 1979 Euro 928 in April 2001 as a track prepared car. I’ve upgraded the engine and transaxle but otherwise it is as it came. You’ll see me at PCA DE days where I also instruct novice drivers.

2. What Porsche(s) do you have? A few A. 1993 928 GTS (purchased new)

My 1993 928 on Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car Magazine Cover page July 2011

Proudly displayed in March 2024 at the Carefree Car Show

C. 1979 928 Featured in Two Magazine Articles

I rescued this 1979 928 from a friend who had to move with only a few weeks notice. Yes, I paid $500 for it as it had sat for over a decade in his home garage and required a repaint and a lot of work. In the period of a few years, I fully restored it. It runs like new. It caught the eye of feature editor Jeff Koch of Hemmings Magazines, who previously featured my 928 GTS.

E. 2009 Cayenne

While this “beach going Cayenne is my wife Betsy’s Porsche, I’ll claim it for this article as I do all the work on it. This Cayenne goes on and off road with over 210,000 miles on it.

Meet this Month’s Featured Member - Rich Andrade

3. Where are you from?

I was born in Phoenix, I grew up in Scottsdale Arizona back when it had less than 15,000 residents. I went to Coronado High School and graduated from Arizona State University with a BSEE degree (Electrical Engineering).

4. Family?

Wife Betsy who served the AZ Region PCA as goodie store manager for 15 years

5. Work background or trade?

Following graduation from ASU I was hired into the first class of new college graduates at Intel Corporation in Santa Clara, California into a marketing group. I moved with the single chip microcontroller group to Chandler Arizona when they opened that as a new facility. I took on automotive marketing responsibility and was assigned an ex-pat position to Munich Germany and interfaced with many automotive suppliers, including Bosch which provides key subsystems today for many Porsches. I was involved with the creation of the CAN-bus as a worldwide standard used in most all automobiles, trucks, busses and even aircraft. Following that I worked in 32-bit RISC CPU marketing. I was a member of the first venture-funded spin-out of Intel, a company named DevelopOnline. Next, I worked with singer-songwriter Jerry Riopelle to bring his fantastic invention the “beamz music system” to market I own and operate Electronik Repair, Inc and provide repair services for Porsche 928 fuel, spark and other electronics

6. What makes your car special/upgrades/personalization?

The Porsche 928 was my first European car. It is an amazing GT cruiser. I’ve driven over 200,000 miles in Porsche 928s They still make me smile I keep my cars, except the track car, stock with the exception of wheel upgrades for my 1987 S4 Porsche designed them well and I don’t find any upgrades necessary.

7. Favorite memory with a car?

The most beautiful drives in the 928 were in the Colorado Rockies on two curvy lane roads. My 928s were a joy.

8. Where/Why did you buy your Porsche?

Following my ex-pat assignment in Germany I wanted a German car. A friend of my had his 1984 928 for sale Betsy and I flew to Boston, drove it home to Arizona in three days and I’ve owned them ever since Purchasing my 1993 928 GTS new was a very special day

9. Top 3 cars you would own?

Having driven new GT3s on the track with students convinced me this is the way to go. The GT3RS would likely be beyond expectations as I haven’t driven one of those.

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

AZPCA Region Event Cancelation Policies & Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event Cancellation Policy

Most of our events have attendance limits, and they fill up quickly. Also, we often have waiting lists for those wishing to attend but do not have a secured attendance spot. Increasingly, attendees sign up and simply do not show up for the event without canceling in advance. This behavior impacts the event registrar/organizer, the event facility, and those on the waiting list wanting to attend but cannot. This behavior demonstrates a lack of common courtesy, requiring it to be addressed proactively. On the first occurrence a warning will be issued, and on the second occurrence privileges to attend future events may be impacted. Also, any registration fees for paid events will be forfeited without recourse since the club is charged regardless. The cancelation policy requires cancelation of your registration on MSR for paid or unpaid events a minimum of 7 days prior to the event date, unless there are serious and extenuating emergency circumstances as assessed by the event registrar/organizer. Most importantly, please be courteous to your fellow members so that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy events.

Event Organizer Responsibilities

Event organizers are required to send out a reminder approximately 9 days in advance of any event reminding registrants of the event and summarizing their responsibilities by including the following language:

Thank you for your RSVP. Please note that whether or not there is a registration fee for this event, the restaurant is expecting a certain number of attendees we provide to them in advance and incur cost accordingly If you need to cancel please do so at least one week prior to the event date (being a no-show without notice is rude to other members who wish to attend, the restaurant and to the event organizer). Additionally, if there is a fee or prepayment associated with the event, it will be forfeited if cancelled less than 7 days before the event. Thank you!”

Additionally, event organizers are requested to send out a reminder two or three days prior to the event simply as a courtesy to remind those attending.

IMPORTANT AZPCA Information

Reimbursement & Stipend Policy for AZPCA HPDE Events:

1. Reimbursement is provided to 5 key workers / volunteers for actual round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts), and if applicable, $120/night stipend for lodging/ incidentals. If it is not an overnight event and/or a requirement, then spend is reduced to $40. Key workers are volunteers that are attending the event solely to work the event but not participate in the event. Examples could be: Grid worker(s), Safety inspector(s), Timing and Scoring Chair, Safety Chair, Event Chair, CDI. Excludes: Corner workers/flaggers.

2. A corner worker/flagger is offered a $100 stipend or a $175 MSR credit for a future HPDE event, by choice of the flagger.

3. Other non-critical volunteer positions are provided a lunch (lunch will either paid for individually or provided as part of event to all participants).

4. The Event Organizer is reimbursed for fuel costs related to event planning/execution and round-trip fuel cost (upon providing receipts and log).

5. Continue to offer discounted registration fees for approved AZPCA Instructors.

November’s Driving Tour - Fall Colors/Flagstaff

Interesting drives featuring fall colors along historic Route 66, socializing and dining with your PCA friends at the beautiful Little America Hotel, and stargazing in the dark skies over Flagstaff.

Our club’s fourth annual overnighter to Flagstaff will follow a route through Prescott Valley to Ashfork, then east on historic Route 66 to Williams, where we will take in the small town historic charm Williams has to offer: Americana-style shops, restaurants, and other venues dating back to the early 1900s, many celebrating the town’s important role as a stop on Historic Route 66.

From Williams, our route will again follow portions of Route 66 on our way to Flagstaff. Expect to experience beautiful fall colors along the way to the Little America Hotel in East Flag.

The Little America Hotel is an experience in itself one of the special features of this event. “Set within 500 acres of Ponderosa Pine forest, Little America Flagstaff is a haven from the mundane. Flagstaff’s only AAA approved Four Diamond hotel combines inviting hospitality with the natural beauty of Northern Arizona and instills a passion to return to this distinctive resort.” We will arrive in the afternoon, and an impromptu happy hour is sure to happen!

November’s Driving Tour - Fall Colors/Flagstaff

The highlight of Day Two is a visit to the world-famous Lowell Observatory in the evening. But we have a day full of activities planned before then: a group breakfast at the Silver Pine Restaurant in the hotel, followed by a drive along several stretches of historic Route 66. The special destination for this drive is Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, a fascinating example of the amazing forces that formed the geology around Flagstaff

Our visit at the observatory will include a historical talk prior to a very interesting tour/presentation just for our group. The Deluxe Stargazing Package is a 3-hour private experience utilizing the 24-inch Dyer Telescope

On Friday, you will be on your own to explore other sites in and around Flagstaff before returning home, or you can plan to join some of us on a drive back to the Valley via Lake Mary Road and Mormon Lake.

When you register for this 3-day event on MotorsportReg, you will pre-pay for the Stargazing tour/presentation at the Lowell Observatory. You will pay your own check when we meet for breakfast on Thursday at the Little America.

You will make your own room reservation at the Little America Hotel. Our special rate is only $109/night + tax for a Grand View King room, the hotel’s nicest room category.

Sign up to join your fellow PCA members for three days of fun driving, fun socializing, and fun stargazing in Flagstaff!

Danielle’s Column - Rolling, Rolling,

Yeah, we’re about to hit the road. In a few days, my partner and I will pick up a camper/van and, over two weeks, head for parts northwest. We’re planning on hitting the Oregon/Washington coast, up to Vancouver, a detour to Vancouver Island, east to Banff, down to Glacier and home. With two dogs.

Are we crazy? I guess we’ll find out.

I do know that, when I sprung this plan on friends and family, the uniform response was something like, “Gee, I had you pegged as a room service, Daiquiris by the pool, valet parking, hot tubbing, road runner. What gives?”

A valid question. One major response is that we need some time and space, to cut off, recompose, regroup, reenergize. It’s sort of an experiment. I want to see if I can really slow down, smell the roses, commune with nature, throttle back. All that stuff. It’s not something that comes naturally to me.

Not that we’re actually roughing it. Although that’s a relative term. A few weeks ago, we drove out to said vehicle to check it out. And, lo and behold, like so many things in life these days, you scratch the surface and you uncover a whole world you didn’t know existed. Like the website Outdoorsy, which lists vehicles to rent. It’s kind of like a mobile Airbnb or Vrbo. That’s where I found the gray monster.

It starts as a Mercedes Sprinter van. Which means four-wheel drive, and a turbo-Diesel engine. Then we blast off into all sorts of custom additions, dreamed up by the owner. Like a remotecontrolled fold-out awning, solar on the roof, flat screen TV. Our “host” asked me what type of coffee I like. “Keurig Peet’s French Roast,” I said. And he made a note – it has a Keurig machine.

In fact, the printed “van inventory” runs to ten pages. Extra Ziplock baggies, oven mitts, bear spray, USBC charging cord (2), a fuzzy lounge pillow …. Beau, the owner, sent us videos. He told us to plan on an hour to walk through. Is this “glamping?” Beats me.

Now, one item has me in knots. Will I suffer from withdrawal when I’m driving the thing. Will the longing for a Porsche, say, on the Road to the Sun, be too painful. I asked Beau how fast it goes. He said it more than keeps up with any traffic. And it handles, he said. Except in crosswinds. Well, I thought … ok!

There’s a bit of a throwback here, a reliving one’s youth. When I was 11, my parents loaded my two sisters and me in a new Buick and we hit the road, from NY to LA and back, for five weeks. Without air conditioning. My seat, as the oldest, was behind the driver. Most of the time with my head stuck out the window, imitating man’s best friend. The wind blast was such that I kept licking my lips … and they became so chapped, they expanded across my face.

Danielle’s Column - Rolling, Rolling, Rolling

But my sisters and I still, to this day, over 60 years later, talk about that trip. About the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD, about Tioga Pass, about the Tetons.

When my daughters were young, we took a road trip from Chicago to my parents in Charlottesville, VA. In a minivan we owned for two whole years. Mostly, the girls sat silent, with their earphones surgically attached to their heads When they did speak, a sole question came out. “Can you explain again why we’re not flying?”

So, sure, there’s a “remembrance of things past” element to the adventure. And a coupling with the reality that, if we don’t do these things, if we don’t keep moving forward with new adventures, if we don’t expand our comfort bubble, while we can, time could very well run out.

I learned the hazards of settling for something, for being too practical, when I owned a ’68 VW Beetle in college in the early 70s. I thought the swing-axle suspension would kill me, and it nearly did. From then on, my driving motto has mimicked the tag line for that lost and lamented magazine “Automobile” – no boring cars. But a camper van?

My father drove until a stroke at 86. My mother drove until she was 91. When she stopped, it wasn’t because she couldn’t drive … I followed her at 91, and she had no problems … but because she thought she should.

One visit to my parents, I programmed the GPS in their car for “home.” There, I said, just press this, and the car will navigate you home. From wherever you are. O the thank-yous. Turns out, they were so afraid of getting lost, they were staying in a roughly 5-mile radius.

This trip is all these things, and more, much more. Like, for example, will we still speak to each other. But I’ll leave that for another day and time. There’s just one thing to do.

Hit the road, Jack.

Kimberly’s Korner - Facts, Figures and Fallacies

5 Reasons Why the Porsche 911 Is So Iconic

Mention sports cars, and most people will think of a low-slung, fast, and beautifully designed vehicle. Even without realizing it, they are probably visualizing something that resembles a Porsch 911. Since its debut in 1964, it has become a symbol of precision engineering, timeless design, and high-performance driving. But what makes it so iconic? Here are five reasons .

First, there’s the design. The 911’s shape has remained consistent for over 60 years. This distinctive silhouette includes round headlights, a sloping rear, and a rear-engine layout. By preserving the original spirit, Porsche has created a sense of timeless continuity.

Second, it has authenticity as a race car. The 911 has conquered just about every major motorsport event. This includes wins at Le Mans, Daytona, and the World Rally Championship. It's also won countless GT and endurance races. Anyone who owns a 911 can feel like they are driving a winner .

Third, are its technical achievements. The rear-engine setup was once criticized for its handling quirks. Porsche has since refined it into a performance advantage. The signature flat-six engine is known for its sound, reliability, and compact packaging. It’s a car that rewards the skilled driver like few others .

Fourth, is its usability. It offers supercar performance in a package you can realistically drive every day. Unlike some exotics, it's both aspirational and attainable, especially older models. It’s comfortable, reliable, and practical traits rarely associated with high-performance cars.

Fifth, the 911 has built a cultural legacy - probably because of the first four reasons. It’s loved by collectors, celebrities, and racers around the world. Iconic versions like the 911 Carrera RS 2.7, 930 Turbo, 964 and 993 generations, and the GT3 and GT2 RS models all have cult followings.

Kimberly’s Korner - Facts, Figures and Fallacies

The Porsche 911 isn’t just a great sports car it’s a benchmark. Few vehicles have managed to evolve so much while staying so true to their origins. This commitment to excellence has made the 911 absolutely iconic.

Bruce’s Book Reviews - BMW 3-Series 50 Years

BMW 3-Series 50 Years by Tony Lewin, Published November 4, 2025 by Motorbooks, Beverly, MA

The flurry of 'anniversary' books in recent years is a sign of how many aspects of the world underwent a fresh start or reawakening after WWII. The industrial enterprise formally named Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) in 1922, substantially predated WWII and produced motorcycles to support the German effort in that war.

There are twelve Chapters ranging from Spark of Genius to Embracing Electric. These chapters are distinguished more by design eras than by years or even model numbers. A nice and unique feature is the 6 panel (including foldout) photographic “ 3 Series Timeline” tracing products back to a radial cylinder Aero engine from 1917. Somewhat confusing to the numerics is that the classic 2002 is treated as a significant part of the 3Series lineage, though the first car with an actual 3 series number was the 303, produced in the mid '30s, the first car with 6 cylinders. This book considers the sport sedan of 1975 to be the real start of the “3-Series” cars.

The layout of BMW is somewhat complicated though chapter names (but not numbers) appear on the lower right of each page. From Chapter 3 on, each many chapters have special 'sidebar' sections such as “Design Up Close”, Motorsport, and Collectability. Each chapter has three tables: Timeline, Basics and Engineering, and Styles and Versions, that appear at various locations in the chapter and finally a Powertrains and Performance table that appears toward the end. Within the chapter text there are headings for the several paragraphs that follow. There is a great deal of information presented, but most of it is in narrative form not as a research reference. If you want detailed information about the design and gestation of a specific model, it will all be in this book. Which chapter is the appropriate on may not be clear, but the Index will direct your search precisely. “M” models are included with no discussion of the separateness of the organization behind them.

Perhaps as interesting as the discussions of cars is the initial description of the trials and tribulations of the German company physically and economically affected by two world wars. Book describes many parallels with the early years of Porsche, especially the use of racing successes in the early years as an aid to selling customer cars.

Bruce’s Book Reviews - BMW 3-Series 50 Years

BMW is hardbound with a photographic cover and different illustrations on the end papers. There are 224 heavyweight, 9-1/2 x 11inch pages and a four-page three column index with no entries for Porsche, but does have two for Karl Ludvigsen. By the time you read this it should be available for $50 at your favorite book seller at Quartoknows.com

Talks Tech with Scott M - Tires for your Porsche

Tech Tips Tires for Your Porsche

Question:

What is the most important component on your Porsche? As you read from the title of this article, it is TIRES! Everything your Porsche does is transmitted through the tires to the road. The wrong or worn tires can dramatically affect how your Porsche drives.

Tires have come a long way over the past hundred years. Today’s tire and performance-vehicle manufacturers spend billions of dollars engineering the highest performing and safest tires for our cars. From the 356 to the 991, the right set of tires can be all the difference.

Let’s start with the basics on how to read a tire’s sidewall. If you have never looked at the sidewall of a tire, all the letters and numbers can be confusing. With the help of this illustration, I will point out some important information.

Tire size (225/50R 16) has three main measurements. The first number is the tread width in millimeters. The larger the number, the wider the tire is. The second number is the tire aspect ratio. This number is the ratio between the side wall and the tread width. A 50 aspect ratio is twice as wide as it is high. The last number is the tire and wheel diameter. The tire and wheel MUST have the same diameter!

Another helpful marking on the tire is the date stamp showing when the tire was manufactured. The date stamp is after the DOT compliance number. This date stamp is four digits with the first two numbers the week and the last two the year.

As you can see in this photo, this tire was manufactured 24th week of 2004. Tires will age even if they are not used,

so Porsche recommends replacing tires that are more than four years old. Any time you are looking to buy a used Porsche, it is good to check this date stamp to see if the tires need to be replaced.

Porsche sports cars will wear tires differently from other passenger cars and trucks. Because Porsche cars have performance alignments, the inside of the tire will wear faster than the outside. It is important to check the inside of the tire for wear, not just the outside. A misaligned car or incorrect tire pressure will cause wear and drastically decrease the life of a tire. Cold tire pressure is one of the most important things to check on your Porsche weekly. Newer Porsches will have the recommended tire pressures on a badge somewhere on the car. For earlier cars, you should check the owner’s manual. As temperature changes, so will tire pressure (10 degrees=1 PSI change), so be sure to check tire pressure often because there can be a nine PSI difference through the seasons.

I have had many customers ask me for advice about what

McIlvain Talks Tech with Scott M - Tires for your Porsche

tires to purchase. I always recommend N-spec tires. Porsche engineers work with different tire manufactures to engineer specific tire attributes that include wet and dry grip, top speed, noise, hydroplaning, handling requirements, high speed durability and serviceability. If the manufacturer can meet or exceed these requirements, then the tire is designated an N-spec tire and can be fitted to a Porsche. There are different N-spec numbers. Zero is the first in the evolution of the tire; four is the latest. You must always match the N-spec to the same number when getting new tires. You NEVER want to have mismatched tires with two tires being different types. This will cause a handling imbalance between the front and rear of the car and is very unsafe! For more info on N-spec tires and a detailed list of N-spec tires, please visit Porsche’s website, http://www.porsche. com/usa/accessoriesandservices/porscheservice/ documentsanddownloads/.

Tires for the Track

If you are new to the track or are still a novice, it is recommended that you use street tires. The reasoning

behind this is that street tires are more forgiving and predicable than race tires. I have had students in the past start on race tires and it set them back in the long run. For someone in DE 3 or 4 I recommend starting on a DOT R tire before moving to a full competition tire. A DOT R tire is still legal to drive on the street but will give great grip. They will wear very fast if driven on the street, so it is best to have two sets of wheels and tires. Whatever track-day tire you choose, make sure to have them heat cycled or heat cycle them yourself. Heat cycling is where the tire is brought up to operating temperature and then allowed to fully cool down. This helps the tire last much longer and provide even wear. Just like street tires, make sure to check tire pressure and alignment to get the maximum performance and longevity out of the tire.

For more information on tires, visit tirerack.com where most every detail of tires is explained and there are great reviews on most tires in production.

The Stuttgart Market Letter

A

ugust in the car world means one thing: Monterey Car Week. And this year’s Porsche numbers look nearly identical to what we saw last year, with 120 cars on offer, a 68% sell-through rate, and $54,470,490 in total sales. That’s just 21 fewer cars than last year’s 141, and only a $19,010 difference in total volume from 2024’s $54,489,500. The real story comes in the two-year trend, as Monterey 2023 also featured 120 Porsches, but brought just $26.6 million at a 61% STR. To see the dollar volume more than double while holding firm on sell-through suggests that stability has returned to the top of the Porsche market.

Our top five sales were dominated by my favorite three-letter word: R U F. Leading the way was a 1989 RUF CTR Lightweight, one of just six produced and the only example finished in Bordeaux Red. This car carried even more significance as Alois Ruf’s personal driver and showed just 11,745 miles from new. From the moment it crossed the block, there was no question it would sit at the top of the charts, and sure enough, nothing else over the course of the week came close to unseating this “Yellowbird.”

Joining it in the top five were a pair of 2021 RUF CTR Anniversary models, built to celebrate three decades since the original Yellowbird. Both examples were single-owner cars, both showed fewer than 500 miles, and both were specified in eye-catching combos. Each hammered just over $3m, essentially confirming the private-party valuations we’ve been hearing for some time.

But the real surprise, and frankly a joy to see, was a proper 1960s Spyder finding a new home. The 1960 718 RS 60 Spyder was one of just six customer cars delivered new to US-based privateers and came with distinguished ownership from day one. Its racing career stretched from 1960 through 1964, and while it was upgraded to annular brakes in 1963, the car retains its original Wendler coachwork and numbers-matching competition engine. A prior restoration was carried out by Paul Russell & Company, with a complete engine rebuild by Fuhrmann expert Bill Doyle. Add in documentation from Jim Perrin and Jürgen Barth, and you had a very complete package. The car ultimately sold for $3,525,000, a strong result and a welcome sight after several years of sluggish interest in Porsche’s ‘50s and ‘60s race cars.

A real head-turner in Monterey was the 1988 911 TAG Turbo by Lanzante. The UK-based motorsport specialist and longtime McLaren partner built just 11 of these cars, each fitted with a 1.5-liter twin-turbocharged TAG-Porsche V6 Formula One engine, the same “TTE P01” units that powered McLaren to championships in the 1980s. This particular example carried engine no. 051, codenamed “AP87,” which Alain Prost campaigned during the 1986 and 1987 seasons. Finished in Mintgrün over Black leather with Blue/Green Tartan inserts, and showing just 311 miles since completion, the car produced 510 hp and was capable of a 200-mph top speed. It sold for $1,930,000, an extraordinary sum, but a sum that to me, seems undervalued for the history and performance in this package.

Singers, on the other hand, showed some softness in Monterey. A 1990 911 Singer DLS, the “Mame Commission,” sold for $2,645,000, well below the $3m result we saw earlier this year. Joining it was a 1990 911 Classic Turbo Study, the “Cielo Mio” Commission, which sold for $1,490,000 against a low estimate of $1.5m, trailing the $1.68m result of a similar car. While Classic Studies have recently crept back above the $1m threshold online, these Monterey results suggest that even at the very top, Singer values are taking a step back. It wasn’t all million-dollar fireworks in Monterey. There was a Porsche at nearly every price point. One that stood out was a 1970 914-6 that continued the strong return to form we have seen for little “sixers,” selling at a healthy $148,500. Fresh from a comprehensive five-year restoration with about $90,000 invested, this California-delivered car wore its original special-order Green Metallic finish and carried a rebuilt flat-six by Aase Motors paired with a side-shifter conversion. With its quality workmanship and unique touches, the price felt well-earned and underscored the renewed strength of the 914-6 market.

The Stuttgart Market Letter

Moving a little upmarket, but still under the million-dollar mark, I was especially curious to see how this 1971 911 ST Rally would fare. With buyers paying top dollar for the new 911 S/T, who wouldn’t want the original in their garage. This car was one of just five Works-built ST Rally cars prepared for the 1971 East African Safari Rally, restored by Porsche expert Gary Kempton, and documented by Hugh Hodges. It has been shown at both Rennsport Reunion and Amelia Island and remains road-registered and event-eligible. Presented in its original colors with period rally equipment, it failed to sell at a high bid of $550,000, but it is still available at $700,000. That is 2024 911 S/T money. Which would you rather have: the legend, or the tribute?

All in all, Monterey delivered another solid week of results for the Porsche market. Newer models continue to lead the charge with strong results across several GT and RS variants, while the classic segment remains mixed, facing some resistance at the top. Still, we saw enough record-setting sales and big-money surprises to suggest there’s plenty of life left in the market. As always, we’ll be watching the effects of Monterey play out over the next month. Until then.

Drive your Porsche on a Racetrack with AZPCA!

Expand your car control skills and explore the capabilities of your Porsche on a racetrack in a safe, controlled environment with no speed limits! AZPCA’s HPDE & TT program (that’s short for High Performance Driver Education and Time Trials) is all about experiencing your Porsche on a road circuit. AZPCA provides personal driving instructors for new participants to guide them through the day. Our instructors will navigate you along the road circuit, teach you the fundamentals of driving at track speeds, but also keep you in a comfort zone so you have a good time. There are flaggers on track, just like at a real racing event. The club also arranges an ambulance and tow truck on site for emergencies.

For the HPDE events, four groups of approximately 10-25 drivers are formed based on experience level- Beginner, Intermediate, Experienced, Advanced. Grouping allows everyone attending to have a good time. Beginners don’t have to stress about having little/no experience- chances are, there are several other drivers in the same group just starting out.

Based on instructor evaluation, you are advanced to the next group up when appropriate. Sometimes this is after one day, or sometimes it takes a several events. Higher run groups typically means more speed but with a better, practiced skill set to control the speed safely. This keeps track days exciting for you as you advance your skill set.

While this is definitely NOT racing, there is a natural tendency to evaluate yourself to other drivers in your group, but HPDE is not structured to award “fast” times. To satisfy the competitive nature in you, we offer an optional “Time Trials” sessions where those specific TT sessions are timed and you compete against others in your class. Lap times are broadcast live so you can see in real time how you stack up against your competitors. Time trials are structured so that you get three clean laps, meaning, you will be by yourself on track without dealing with other cars in your way.

How is a typical HPDE day structured?

A track day starts around 6:30 -7:00 am. You’ll check-in and get your car safety inspected on-site first. A drivers meeting kicks off around 7:45 am, with the first car on track around 8:30 am. A forty minute lunch break splits the day and the event is usually over around 4:00 pm. You can expect five 20-minute sessions (100 mins total) of track time each day, although some events are structured with four 25-minute sessions. Time trial sessions are optional to add-in during your registration, and that consists of two additional timed sessions (one morning, one afternoon) consisting of three hot laps.

The beginner group will also have classroom discussion after their sessions to discuss car-control and vehicle dynamics and what they experienced.

The club either provides lunch or there is an option to purchase one on site. Since there is down time in-between your driving sessions and classroom discussion, there is lots of opportunity for comradery with other club members and opportunity to socialize and check out other cars attending.

What do you need to bring?

Your vehicle (preferably a Porsche) in good maintenance. (Some club members bring their other cars btw – we won’t shame you if you do that)

We provide a required checklist of things to inspect on your car before coming to a track day. If you aren’t mechanically inclined (or don’t care to do this yourself), you can take the checklist to a mechanic of your choice to do the inspection for you. We have a few places we can recommend if you don’t have a preferred mechanic. Main points of interest are good tires, brakes, brake fluid, no leaking fluids, no abnormal driving characteristics of the vehicle. We conduct a final brief safety inspection on your vehicle the morning of the event.

Helmets are typically available to rent when you register for the event– you can try the sport before you commit to purchasing a helmet.

There are additional items you can bring to make the day more comfortable or exciting – chairs, cameras, etc. There are lots of online video you can watch telling you to bring this or that. While that can be somewhat helpful down the road, keeping it basic is usually best. If you forget something, chances are there is someone there that will let you borrow/have theirs.

Lastly and most important: don’t forget to bring a desire to have a good time and willingness to learn!

G

Let’s Have Porsche Fun Getting Dirty

etting your Porsche Special Utility Vehicle (SUV) Four-Wheel Drive or your Porsche Carrera Dakar Rally Vehicle filthy dirty on an off-road trail is a lot of fun and will reward you with experience you cannot get on a twisty-asphalt paved road with your GT3RS or Boxster. Off-Road Driving Tours are like on-highway driving tours, but with more breath-taken views of nature The off-road tours provide a safe relaxed, slow paced, noncompetitive enjoyment for members to enjoy the great outdoors and backroads (trails), and to learn off-road driving techniques within the capabilities of their Porsche SUV vehicles with minimal impact on the environment

Porsche A.G. introduced the Cayenne and Macan model vehicles for Porsche car owners to enjoy various outdoor activities. The Porsche Club of America (PCA) developed a program for their members to enjoy those outdoor activities with other PCA members therefore developed program standards for the Regions to administer for their members with emphasis on safety and fun.

Those program standards are known as the PCA Minimum Off-Road Driving Tour Standards. Those standards defined/categorized five trail types with a rating designator using numbers, 1-5, and are based on the difficulty to traverse the trail from easy/safe to extremely difficult/risky dangerous

A Category 1 Trail is a graded well-maintained all-weather dirt packed gravel trail with grades less than ten degrees and wide for opposing traffic to safely pass without moving to right and stopping. No ruts or rocks to crawl over A Category 2 is a dirt gravel and sandy trail with infrequent maintenance with ruts and/or rocks up to 5 inches. Grades can exceed 10 degrees or 17 %. A Category 2 Trail is wide for two vehicles to pass safely along the entire route.

Category 1 rated Trail is an appropriate trail for Showroom Stock Porsche SUVs. Category 2 rated Trail would be more suited for Porsche SUVs with some minor vehicle/suspension modifications such as Springs and Shock packages.

A Category 3 Trail is characterized by a single vehicle two-wheel width track path trail with natural rutted washes or gulches with water crossings up to 6 inches in depth, and grades between 10°/17% to 15°/27% and some slickrocks up to 7 inches. Safe vehicle passing is only possible in selected spots.

Category 3 rated Trails may require an aggressive Spring and Shock Suspension Package, larger tires, under carriage armor with a moderate lift for additional ground clearance.

Trail Categories 4 & 5 are essentially extreme off-road trails with obstacles that have limited bypasses, rock gardens, deep water crossings, steep grades, and off-cambered narrow width trail paths. Categories 4 & 5 Trails are not approved nor will be Porsche ventured due to higher risk of personal safety and damage to the Porsche vehicle

At this time, unless there is a demand for the Region to host events on Category 3 rated Trails, the Region’s focus will be Category 1 Trails. Category 2 Trails may be a possibility in the future if members expressed an interest

Let’s Have Porsche Fun Getting Dirty

The standards also set the group size, based on the trail type category, the requirements for the Group Leader and Sweeper roles, Release and Waiver of Liability for Member Adults and Minors, Planning and Trail Driving Conduct, minimum trail & recovery equipment for the vehicle and personal provisions, Minimum (both Cellular & Two-way Radio) Communications Requirements between the Group Leader and Sweeper for all the participants.

Additionally, the PCA subscribes to the principles of the environmental organization T.R.E.A.D. (Travel Respect Educate Avoid Do) Lightly (https://treadlightly.org/learn/recreation-tips/4x4/). Their principles must be and will be followed to the maximum extent possible meaning; the Club will stay on established trails and will not blaze/start new trails.

In addition to the PCA minimum standards, there are non-PCA Trail Etiquettes that members should be aware of for the safety of everyone on the trail. It has become a standard practice that all off-road trail organizations utilize two-way radio communications to relay immediate changing trail conditions to the members of their group to avoid collisions or other hazardous conditions/situations

Although, the off-road trail groups communicate changing conditions to the member drivers in their respective groups, the individual trail groups are never on the same radio channel and have direct communications to effectively communicate between the groups. In this case, standard hand signals are usually given by the respective Group Leaders of the oncoming groups signaling the number of the following drivers and the Sweeper will signal the end/last vehicle.

The respective Group Leaders will communicate this information over their respective groups’ radio channels to the members in the groups. Where this information becomes very important are in the blind turns/curves/grades when the oncoming traffic cannot be seen, especially when the group(s) may be spread out.

For personal safety, members should never venture off-roading alone without another vehicle/driver in case there is an unforeseen situation. Also, members should develop a list of equipment and provisions to bring along with them in case their time on the trail is unexpectantly extended and the distance to services is far.

Some items to consider and be prepared with but not limited to; Water/Food, Medication, First Aid/Trail Trama Kit, Spare Tire/Jack, Wheel Blocks, Blankets, Tow Straps, Flashlight, Small Hand Tool Kit, Portable Air Compressor, Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) Off-Road Navigation Mapping System, Satellite SOS Position Tracking Device with Service, Portable Chairs (for picnic on the trail runs), Gloves, Trash Bags, Tire Gauge, Toilet Paper, Paper Towels, Hand Sanitizer and/or Cleaner, and Automotive Electrical Fuse Kit

Some trails can be rough, or wash-boarded, which can reduce the fun factor for many members. Some steps can be taken to minimize the rough roads by a technique called “Airing Down” your tire pressures when you reach the dirt road. Airing down to the appropriate and safe tire pressures will be contingent on your wheel and tire types and what is recommended by the tire and wheel manufacturers for off-road travel based on your vehicle model. You may want to consult with your Porsche Service Advisor about what is recommended for your vehicle’s wheels & tires.

Most Off-Road Touring Organizations factor in “Airing Down” and “Airing Up” locations as part of their event planning.

Some off-road vehicles have a feature that will electronically disengage the front Swaybar while off-roading by just activating the feature button on the dash/center console. By using this feature, it will allow the suspension to articulate and soften the suspension ride stiffness as you traverse over the trail rough spots without sacrificing the vehicle stability. You should check and see if your vehicle has this feature. This feature may be available only on specific suspension packages

Let’s Have Porsche Fun Getting Dirty

It is essential that everyone conduct a self-inspection of their vehicle prior to getting dirty in accordance with the PCA Off-Road Driving Tour Self-Inspection Safety Checklist. Off-Road Tours on Categories 1 & 2 Trails do not require a complete checklist to be submitted, only events on a Category 3 Trail require a completed and signed Self-Inspection Safety Checklist to be submitted

The items required to be checked are routine safety checks that normally should be performed prior to operating your vehicle. The items to be inspected are but not limited to; all Tires including the spare for Condition such as wear, bulges, cracks, the age of the tire can be critical; Tire Pressures; Undercarriage for loose or hanging components; Under the Hood for brake, power steering, engine & transmission oil levels; Windshield Washer fluid; Coolant fluid leaks; Brake Rotor & Pad wear; Hoses & Belts; Vehicle Tow Hook Accessible; and Full Fuel Tank.

The emphasis on safe driving on the trail is paramount. Member drivers should know their abilities and limitations for operating their vehicle safely in all road conditions. Members should respect the posted signs and not consume alcohol or drugs while operating any motor vehicle.

The Speed Limit should never exceed what is safe for conditions. The speed into blind curves should never exceed 15 Miles Per Hour and most cases come to a halt before safely proceeding, and always expect the unexpectant, and never assume it is safe and no one is coming around the turn. On grades, the uphill traffic should be given the right-of-way preference and if necessary, pull to the right and stop in a safe spot to allow the traffic to pass.

Members should always keep a visual on the vehicle behind them and ensure there is a safe distance with the vehicle in front and not follow too close. If the vehicle behind is no longer visible slow down or come to a halt until you have sight of the vehicle. If there is a change of directions or route deviation, you should wait at that point until the following vehicle is in sight.

Members should drive with their headlamps on to increase visibility to other drivers. No passing will be allowed unless there is a need to overtake a stationary vehicle that is no longer in transit (motion) and/or has waved you by, and if the pass can only be completed safely.

Also, included in the PCA Minimum Off-Road Driving Tour Standards is the means of communication between the Group Leader and the Sweeper, and the Tour Participants. It is important that the Group Leader communicate changing conditions, and the sweeper keeps the group leader advised on the group’s status.

In most cases, the off-road driving tours are in areas of poor cellular telephone service/coverage. Additionally, as conditions can change rapidly and it is imperative that the information gets relayed quickly, the cellular telephone is not the speediest means of effectively communicating that information, only two-way radios are the best method of communication.

There are various types of two-way radio devices used on the Trail. The most common radio devices used are the Family Radio Service (FRS) portable radios that do not require a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Radio Station Authorization (License) and the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) radios that do require an individual FCC License. Both radios services utilize the same frequencies. The only difference is that the non-licensed FRS radio service radios operate at a lower transmitter power level than the GMRS radios The procedure to request a GMRS Radio License is merely submitting an application and a $35 fee to the FCC for a 10-year license.

Let’s Have Porsche Fun Getting Dirty

There is no requirement for the members to purchase a two-way radio in order to participate in the off-road tours. The two-way radio is just a tool for receiving safety information and if necessary to communicate with either the Group Leader or the sweeper or other members in the Tour

If the member elects to purchase a portable (walkie-talkie) radio, they should be aware that depending on the make/model of the radio purchased, the radio may or may not perform very well from inside of the vehicle and the performance may not be very effective of more than a quarter mile (1,000 to 1300 Feet in distance). The poor performing and less-than-quality radios are usually the inexpensive foreign brand radios that usually cost less than $100 for two-radio packs that are purchased at various consumer discount center retail outlets or from on-line warehouse merchandise operations.

The better performing consumer FRS or GMRS radios will normally cost more than $100 per radio and can be purchased directly on-line from the manufacturers or the respective dealers websites such as Cobra Electronics, Midland USA, Rugged Radios, or Motorola Solutions. These radios are already preprogrammed with the FRS/GMRS channels from the manufacturer.

If any member has questions regarding these radios, please feel free to contact Kenny Mitchell at kenmitchelldirector@az.pca.org

Off-Road Tours venture and explore miles and miles away from various services that may be needed if an unexpectant incident/event should occur. Also, the location of an unexpected incident/event may be difficult to identify since there are no recognizable landmarks nearby. Most off-road landmarks may not be known to emergency services. That is why it is important that drivers should have a GPS driven off-road navigational system that does not rely on a cellular telephone service signal.

It is imperative that there is a contingency plan for members to implement in case of an on-trail incident such as, but not limited to, mechanical breakdowns, collision or roll-over event, and medical emergencies. The Contingency plan should include a procedure to implement in case there is no cellular telephone service signal.

The Region has hosted a couple of off-road driving tours in the past couple of years, and they have been well attended. Also, the Region has allowed members to drive their non-Porsche SUV type four-wheel drive vehicles to attend and will continue this practice. The driver must be an active PCA member, and the vehicle must be a highway legal licensed a four-wheel drive SUV capable of being driven at all highways at legal speeds. In other words, no motorcycles or side by side All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) or Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) will be allowed.

Arizona Region is planning to host several Off-Road Driving Tours throughout the year Currently, there are plans in the works to have an off-road driving tour on one of the weekdays the first week in October. This driving tour is planned for driving to Crown King for lunch at the Crown King Saloon, by way of downtown Cleator, known for the home base of the Cleator Yacht Club. Information on this Tour will be listed on the Region’s website Event Calendar and in Going Places.

Porsche market

Mart shoppers are PCA members who know Porsches, know what they’re looking at, and are serious, ready, willing, and able buyers — not tire kickers. Because PCA members take care of their Porsches, vehicle quality in The Mart is better than other websites. And these are not anonymous buyers and sellers, they are registered PCA members.

The Porsche Club of America features news, videos, and information about the current market for used Porsches in the monthly Mart Fresh News email newsletter.

The Mart is one of the most visited parts of PCA.org, recording over 650,000 page views per month. In addition to your online Mart ad, you get a summary version of your ad in Porsche Panorama.

Mart Fresh News also highlights a variety of Porsche listings from PCA’s Mart Classifieds. When you find a vehicle in The Mart, you can be assured that it’s been cared for by a registered PCA member — not some anonymous seller.

It’s a free benefit of membership — there is no charge to place an ad in The Mart!

PCA has 20 registries for those super enthusiastic about their Porsche model

The PCA Registry program was established in 1995 to encourage closer relationships within Porsche model owners in PCA. The program allows PCA members to network with others in their specific area of interest. Sharing of information fosters restoration and maintenance of members’ automobiles. A registry can potentially provide a new resource for historical displays at Parades and other PCA events, along with information for articles in Porsche Panorama. Don’t see a registry for your Porsche? We are also looking for individuals who are interested in starting a registry for a model that doesn’t have an existing registry.

Through the Ages now features the

New for 2025, the Porsche Club of America History Book contains an overview of the club’s history, followed by individual sections covering specific detailed items. Some sections were designed for use as standalone articles for region newsletters. Individual chapters and page numbers can be “clicked on” from the contents page. What’s happening in the Porsche Market Place?

The original RUF RCT (Ruf Carrera Turbo), introduced in 1992, was born out of RUF’s ingenuity in repurposing surplus parts from BTR conversions of Porsche 964 models. Built on the 964 platform, the RCT combined a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six with Bosch Motronic management to produce up to 370 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque delivering performance on par with the earlier BTR models. In keeping with RUF’s philosophy of blending performance with everyday drivability, the RCT retained much of the 964’s usability while offering significantly enhanced speed and handling. The RCT EVO is a modern evolution of that concept, offering 425 hp along with optional carbon-ceramic brakes, center-lock wheels, and an integrated roll cage. True to RUF’s bespoke nature, the RCT EVO could be configured in various body styles and drivetrain layouts, making it a versatile yet highly capable continuation of the original RCT's spirit.

This RCT EVO started life as a 1990 911 Carrera 2 Coupe 5-Speed and was sent to RUF Automobile Canada for conversion following the owner’s purchase in April of 2023. As part of the transformation, the sunroof and drip rails were deleted, a fixed rear spoiler was added, and the car was refinished in its original shade of Baltic Blue Metallic. Inside, the cabin was reupholstered with bolstered sport seats in custom Oyster leather, along with minimalist pull-strap door panels that eliminated the standard armrests and storage pockets. Under the rear decklid, a RUF-built 3.6-liter M64-based flat-six features a RUF turbocharger, intercooler, sequential multiport fuel injection, and twin-plug ignition, producing 442 horsepower according to a December 2023 dyno sheet.

While RUF RCT EVOs are quite rare, we’ve actually seen two examples cross the block already this year. The first failed to sell at RM’s Miami sale, while the second an example built by RUF Canada hammered at $661,500 back in March. This latest RCT EVO sold at a final bid of $583,000, landing right in line with expectations, but still representing a bit of a deal compared to the car that sold earlier. Well bought.

AZPCA Regional eNEWS

AZPCA REGION eNEWS

AZPCA Region publishes several emails each month to notify the members of the upcoming social and driving events and other pertinent Region business and activity information. These emails are known as eNews email blasts and will be identified by the PCA Banner as you see above.

It has come to the Region’s attention that several hundred members are not receiving the AZPCA Region’s eNews email blasts. This may be because the PCA National Office may not have your correct email address or there may be a technical problem with your email address. Or the member at one time elected to opt out of receiving the emails and would like to begin receiving them.

AZPCA Region would like to help the members in resolving this issue of you not receiving the eNews emails. If you are not receiving any of the emails that are labeled with the above banner, and prefer to receive them, please email the Region’s Communications Chair, Kenny Mitchell at kenmitchell-director@az.pca.org
