RITUALIZE YOUR RADIANCE WITH OUR SKIN-FIRST APPROACH

This December marks a milestone we’re incredibly proud of, 20 years of Port Macquarie FOCUS! From day one, our community has been at the heart of everything we do, and two decades on we can honestly say we have, and still continue, to achieve this each and every month.

When we look back, we see thousands of pages filled with local heroes, events, charities, local businesses and their achievements, visiting stars and their shows and festivals as well as everyday people doing extraordinary things. Then there’s the covers! Over the years, our front pages have showcased an awesome mix of local legends, innovators, creators, business

owners, athletes and artists. Each cover has represented a story worth telling and a face worth celebrating, and we’re honoured to have given so many voices a platform. When we first started we often wondered when we would run out of interesting people to interview. But 20 years later we’re still uncovering and shining a spotlight on the people and places that make this region special.

To our readers, advertisers, contributors and the wider community: thank you for 20 years of trust, support and enthusiasm. We have never been one to toot our own horn or to do any self promotion, but we are very proud to be a print publication that 20 years later is still growing, being read and LOVED.

As much as it’s been 20 years, technically we’re not quite there yet. This is issue 237, and if you’re any good at maths, 20 years, one issue a month, equals 240 issues! And that’s because a little thing called COVID happened. We will be officially celebrating 20 years in our March edition, so look out for that one.

We hope you enjoy our December edition which is filled with lots of Christmas love and gift ideas, places to eat, drink and be merry this holiday season and as always special stories and interviews that make this town one worth living in. Celebrating Community, Connection & a New Year Together

AS WE PREPARE TO WELCOME ANOTHER EXCITING YEAR IN PORT MACQUARIE, BUSINESS PORT MACQUARIE IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE EIRE CONSTRUCTIONS AS OUR FIREWORKS HEADLINE SPONSOR FOR THIS YEAR’S NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATIONS.

This partnership is more than a sponsorship — it’s a reflection of what makes our region so special. Eire Constructions has long been a committed supporter of our local community, and their decision to once again partner with Business Port Macquarie reinforces their dedication to helping create a vibrant, connected, and memorable experience for locals and visitors alike.

For Eire, this event represents the heart of what they value: building strong foundations, investing in local people, and celebrating the spirit of the Hastings. Their continued support ensures our community can come together at Town Green to share a moment of joy, connection, and celebration as we count down to 2026.

At Business Port Macquarie, we firmly believe our business community plays a vital role in shaping the region’s identity. When local businesses invest in events like these, they help create shared experiences that unite families, strengthen community pride, and bring life to our beautiful foreshore. These celebrations don’t just light up the sky — they illuminate the power of partnership and the importance of coming together as a community.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Eire Constructions for once again leading the way as our major supporter. Their commitment helps ensure New Year’s Eve remains one of the most loved and anticipated events on the Port Macquarie calendar.

We also acknowledge and thank our valued supporting sponsors, whose contributions play an important role in making this event possible. Your support helps us continue creating meaningful moments for our region, year after year.

Together, with the businesses who champion our community, we are proud to celebrate another year of progress, connection, and shared excitement for the future.

Here’s to a vibrant New Year’s Eve celebration — and to the strong partnerships that make it all possible.

As Port Macquarie enters a period of rapid growth and transformation, Executive O cer Kylie Morris is stepping into her role at a pivotal moment for the region’s business community. In this interview, she shares her vision for strengthening connection, advocacy and opportunity through Business Port Macquarie as the region moves into its next chapter.

Port Macquarie as the region its

KYLIE MORRIS

i Kylie. You’ve recently stepped into the role of Executive Officer. What excites you most about leading Business Port Macquarie at this particular moment in the region’s growth?

Honestly, it feels like I’ve stepped into the role at exactly the right time. There’s a real sense of momentum in Port Macquarie with new people arriving, new ideas emerging, and industries evolving. What excites me most is being able to help shape that energy into something meaningful for our business community. I love the idea of helping local businesses feel supported, heard and connected as we grow. It’s a chance to make a positive impact, and that really motivates me.

place for support and information. We’re essentially the collective voice of the business community and a hub that keeps local businesses informed and empowered.

Port Macquarie is known for having a diverse and rapidly growing economy. What do you think sets this region apart as a place to live, work, and invest?

For readers who may not be familiar, how would you describe the core purpose of Business PORT MACQUARIE and the role it plays in supporting the local business community?

At its heart, Business Port Macquarie exists to make doing business in our region easier. We connect people, advocate for their needs, and help create opportunities for growth and collaboration. That could involve raising issues with government, hosting events where members can meet and learn from each other or simply being a central

Port Macquarie offers the best of both worlds. We have a strong mix of industries from health, tourism, education, construction, professional services, and a growing number of entrepreneurs choosing to build their future here. But what really sets us apart is the community spirit. People genuinely want to collaborate and help each other succeed. Combine that with our lifestyle, natural beauty, infrastructure and growing talent pool, and it becomes clear why the region is such an attractive place to live and invest.

the key issues or opportunities you’re currently working on?

We have a strong mix of industries from health, tourism, education, construction, professional services, and a growing number of entrepreneurs choosing to build their future here.

Business Port Macquarie has a long history of advocacy. What are some of

Advocacy is at the heart of what we do, and one of the biggest focuses recently has been working closely with local government on critical infrastructure issues, particularly the Wrights Road/Oxley Highway roundabout. Businesses and residents have been feeling the impact of congestion and safety concerns for some time, so we stepped in to help amplify the community’s voice. We reached out widely, and the response was incredible. We gathered more than 10,000 signatures in record time, which we then presented to Parliament to highlight just how urgently this issue needs action. It showed the strength of our community when we come together and the importance of having a business chamber that can mobilise and advocate at scale. This kind of partnership between Business Port Macquarie, government, and the broader community is exactly how we want to continue approaching major issues moving forward. Continued over...

Networking is a big part of your offering. What kinds of events or initiatives have proved most valuable to members, and how do these events help strengthen business connections locally?

Our Coffee Connections and Business After Hours events are very popular because they create easy, relaxed spaces where people can naturally connect, and these will always be part of what we do. But we’ve also listened closely to members who’ve told us that when they can’t make it to events, they start to feel disconnected from what’s happening in the business community.

We’re taking a fresh approach to what connection can look like. One initiative I’m really excited about is our new Business Connect magazine for members.

our advocacy, expanding our program offerings, and improving how we communicate with members and stakeholders. We’re also looking to play a bigger role in regional planning and economic development. Strengthening partnerships across the Mid North Coast will be key, so we can support major projects that will help shape the region’s long-term prosperity.

Are there any new programs, advocacy goals, or member services on the horizon that you’re particularly excited about?

Strengthening

partnerships across the Mid North Coast will be key, so we can support major projects that will help shape the region’s long term prosperity.

It gives people another way to stay engaged, share stories, and celebrate each other’s wins, even if they can’t attend in person. It keeps conversations going and ensures everyone feels included.

We’re also exploring more flexible formats like online touchpoints, short pop-up sessions, and small targeted gatherings. The goal is to make connection accessible for everyone, because we know how essential it is for sparking ideas, building partnerships, and strengthening the sense of community.

Looking ahead to 2026, what are the biggest priorities or projects Business Port Macquarie has planned?

Our main priority is strengthening the organisation so we can deliver even more value. That includes enhancing

Absolutely. We’re developing a refreshed professional development program focused on practical, skillsbased learning that members can immediately apply. We’re also creating a more structured approach to collecting member feedback so our advocacy is even more targeted and evidence-based and exploring new ways to increase the visibility of local businesses whether through partnerships, campaigns, or storytelling that highlights the innovation and talent in our region.

For businesses considering joining, what are some of the more overlooked benefits of becoming part of the Business Port Macquarie network?

One of the biggest overlooked benefits is the feeling of having a community behind you. Members gain access to a network of people who are willing to share knowledge, offer support, and create opportunities together. There’s also the benefit of staying informed, members hear about updates, insights and

opportunities they might otherwise miss. Being part of Business Port Macquarie sends a strong message that you’re committed to the region and invested in its future, which often opens unexpected doors.

As you look toward the future, what is your broader vision for Business Port Macquarie’s role in shaping the region’s next chapter?

My vision is for Business Port Macquarie to become an even stronger, more collaborative leader for our business community, an organisation people trust for guidance, advocacy, connection and insight. I want us to be deeply involved in shaping regional growth so it’s sustainable, strategic and aligned with what local businesses need.

Ultimately, I want us to continue building a connected, future-focused business community where people feel supported and proud to contribute to Port Macquarie’s next chapter.

Thanks Kylie.

ALICJA HUME

PHOTOGRAPHER of the MONTH

Alicja Hume has built a richly creative life across makeup artistry, design, and photography; where her gi for capturing authentic, joy-filled moments truly shines. We sat down with her to explore the roots of her love for visual storytelling, her familyinspired approach, and the artistry behind the candid, memory-soaked images she’s become known for.

HMy family tree is full of creative people. Ever since I can remember, I painted, drew, sewed my dolls’ clothes, and always looked for some new medium to explore (I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, so that explains it).

We LOVE going through these photos now with our kids, showing them what life was like back then in post-communist Poland, what our childhood was like, our many dogs and holidays near the river.

i Alicja. You’ve built a beautifully creative life across multiple mediums. What originally pulled you toward visual storytelling?

When it comes to photography, a camera was always within reach in my home. My Mum took thousands of photos of my sisters and I throughout our life and we have so many albums. Video cameras were rare, and we didn’t have one until we were teens, so photos were the only tool to capture memories. We LOVE going through these photos now with our kids, showing them what life was like back then in post-communist Poland, what our childhood was like, our many dogs and holidays near the river. It’s such a gift that my Mum gave us. Print your photos people! Photography is just one of many art forms you’ve explored, can you share a bit about your background and creative journey?

I was a makeup artist for 10 years and was lucky to work for great brands, but also backstage on fashion shows, The Voice of Poland and Dancing with the Stars. Working with a lot of photographers back then ignited a spark in me and I bought my first DSLR camera. I had no idea what I was doing but I would organise photoshoots with my friends, and we would have the best time dressing up and photographing. Years later, when my daughter was born my dusty old camera came out of the drawer and stayed for good. When I moved to Australia I got into graphic design, which is something I do alongside photography.

Family photography can feel chaotic in the best possible way. What do you love most about capturing families in their most authentic moments?

I think it is the chaos that is the most beautiful! Kids are only like that for a short time and it’s so precious. I always feel honoured being invited to be a part of that journey. In my family albums there are rarely any posed photos, there are images of us throwing autumn leaves in the air, playing tug of war with the dog, jumping in puddles - these are the ones that make me smile. I want to give that same gift to my clients. Frozen memories of a great time spent together as a family. I hope that these images will make them smile over and over again throughout the years to come.

Continued over...

Your work often feels like a blend of art and memory-making. How do you strike that balance between creativity and documenting real life as it unfolds?

Firstly, that is a massive compliment! Thank you. I don’t know if there is a recipe. I try to be present and observant. I want to capture candid moments that express who that person really is. As an artist I am drawn to detail and maybe that’s it. I look for those glimmers! I like experimenting with my camera as well. Sometimes it’s an intentional motion blur, an unusual angle or crop or even a plastic bag on my lens!

Many photographers talk about the importance of connection. How do you build meaningful rapport with clients, especially children or camera-shy adults?

I like to think I have a personality that connects easily and I’m trying to just be myself when I’m engaging with clients. When you’re authentic

and unguarded, it’s easier for people to trust and open up to you.

I thrive in chaos! Maybe that is why I’m so drawn to family photography. I do love feeding my brain with beautiful things though: photography, art, interiors.

I genuinely love kids, and they are my priority during sessions. If they are happy, I know everything will go smoothly. I always say hi to them first so that they feel an important part of the experience.

I spend some time chatting to them, about THEM! What they like to do, read, if they are into dragons or Disney princesses. Throughout the session I always have some games for them to play and by the end we are usually the best of friends. I channel my inner child when working with kids, I’m goofy, I try to make them laugh. Ah, I also have stickers! Most of us are camera shy! Often, people are just nervous about not knowing what to do, so I start every session with some basic instructions until everyone feels comfortable. I reassure my clients that if they need guidance, I will provide it. When they see how relaxed it is they can focus not on my camera, but on each other and that is exactly what I need. That is when the magic happens.

What does your creative process look like from idea to final edit? Are there any

rituals or routines that help you get into a flow?

Did I mention I have ADHD?

Routines are not my strongest suit. I’m a messy artist. I thrive in chaos! Maybe that is why I’m so drawn to family photography. I do love feeding my brain with beautiful things though: photography, art, interiors. That helps me feel inspired. Final edits are dictated by the vibe of the images I created, the mood and feel of the session. I don’t strive to have the most perfect and coordinated Instagram feed. Each family is unique, and I want my photos to reflect that.

You’ve clearly put a lot of time into honing your craft. What have been some of the most valuable lessons you’ve learned along the way?

I learn all the time! But what I came to understand over the years is that beauty is in the ordinary. I love great styling and beautifully coordinated outfits, but I think connection is the most important ingredient of truly amazing family photos. Don’t stress tiny details. If you’re going through a tutu phase or Thomas the Tank engine phase, let it all be in the photos. Those are the things you’ll want to remember.

What projects, themes or ideas are you excited to explore in your photography moving forward?

I adore photographing pregnant women. I would love to do more of that. It’s such an interesting time in the life of a woman. To me it’s magic and there is nothing more beautiful. There is vulnerability, but also so much strength in a mother. We don’t all feel glowing during pregnancy, and I think a lot of ladies are shying away from maternity photos for that reason. I get it, but I also think that this is one photography session that you would never regret. For me as a photographer on the other hand, these sessions are an opportunity to slow down, experiment and explore the more artistic side of my craft.

Finally, where can people view your work or get in touch if they’d love to book a session with you?

Super easy! You can reach out via my website: alicjahumephotography.com.au or my Instagram @alicjahumephotography.

Thanks Alicja.

Sue POLEWESKI JONES

As the Bonny Hills Art Prize prepares to celebrate its fi h anniversary in 2026, the event continues to shine as a community-driven showcase of exceptional local talent. We caught up with commi ee member Sue Poleweski Jones to reflect on how a small idea sparked in 2021 has grown into a much-loved, selffunded celebration of art, creativity, and connection on the Mid North Coast.

Sarah Spenser - Koala Pastel & Drawing

Hi Sue. The Bonny Hills Art Prize is heading into its fifth anniversary in 2026. Could you share with us how it all began?

Local artist Brian Barker was the inspiration behind the Bonny Hills Art Prize (BHAP) as a platform to encourage artists on the Mid North Coast to showcase their talent. Brian’s conversations with the Bonny Hills Progress Association saw the conception of the project embraced by art loving members and local artists, the concept flourished and work began for a dedicated team of volunteers. The BHPA approached The Francis Retreat as a suitable venue for the event, and we went from there! The St Agnes Catholic ParishThe Francis Retreat has continued to be our major sponsor over the past five years.

You now operate as a self-funded annual event with strong local sponsorship. How important has community and business support been in keeping the art prize thriving?

Sponsorship and community support is the cornerstone of the BHAP. Without the generous support of our sponsors, we would not have had the success to keep the art prize evolving. Through the entry and commission of the sold artworks we are now able to provide funds for community projects as well as reinvest back into the art prize. The quality of artwork displayed each year is exceptional. What do you think

attracts artists to Bonny Hills, and how have you seen the calibre evolve over the past five years?

Artists being natural creatives are always coming up with something new, each year there are always artworks that enchant, amaze, engross and engage the audience.

Each year we continue to see the enormous creative talent within the Mid North Coast area. The BHAP is the first art show on the calendar each year and has been embraced by art associations up and down the coast who communicate the art prize to their members. The event is widely shared on social media to encourage all artists to participate. The entry fees and commissions are reasonable and the prize money on offer is very generous. Some of our artists exhibiting have sold their work nationally, internationally as well as locally. Our judges are well renowned and respected in the art community which adds to our ongoing professional approach to holding this now annual event.

Art sales at the event are consistently strong. Why do you think the community responds so positively to the works showcased?

There is something for everyone at the BHAP. Our categories include acrylic & oil; watercolour, mixed media, pastel and drawing and small artworks, across all genres – landscapes, florals, portraits,

seascapes, animals, pets and still life with artists capturing these creatively with their own unique voice whether in abstract, realism, impressionism, surrealism or contemporary art, photorealism, pop art and expressionism.

Artists being natural creatives are always coming up with something new, each year there are always artworks that enchant, amaze, engross and engage the audience. The community and temporary community of holiday makers now recognises this and we see people return year after year and share their experience through word of mouth.

Our team of volunteers includes an artist each day who can talk with interested visitors about the art on display sharing stories and knowledge with the audience. Our display is carefully curated and hung to show works to their best. Friendly volunteers are only too happy to assist where needed.

The venue of the Francis Retreat is an amazing space to showcase art, and visitors often comment on the beautiful and relaxed environment.

BONNY HILLS ART PRIZE
Bernice Daher - Unleashed ADBRI & Rayners Lawyers Mixed Media

The inclusion of youth categories has been a wonderful addition. What inspired the team to expand the art prize in that direction?

With our focus on art within our community it was decided to be representative of all our community demographics. Children are naturally creative, and we believe the inclusion of youth provides a supportive forum for young artists to display their talent. We involve local schools to share information to the children and families. Schools and teachers have been very supportive to encourage their students to become involved in entering.

Your “Children as Artists” workshops are always booked out! What does it mean to you to be helping foster creativity in the next generation?

As artists we feel a strong commitment to supporting and coaching our young creatives. Often art gets lost amongst other curriculum areas within a school week. By providing our Children as Artists workshops we can open young minds to techniques and opportunities to explore different media and tools. These are free, funded by Bonny Hills Progress Association and all equipment is provided.

Behind the scenes, a team of volunteers keeps everything running smoothly. Can you share a bit about the people who make this event possible? Our volunteers are the backbone of the event. Our organising team start evaluating and reviewing at the end of the art prize and this forms the basis for next year’s event. Planning for the following year kicks off in June. Our team consists of volunteers with varied backgrounds, with strong project management experience and a passion for art. Mix this together and we have an amazing group of people - to plan, organise speak to sponsors, publicise and promote. We have an expanding and experienced team who ensure that the event runs smoothly. We call on additional volunteers to assist with

the set-up, hanging and daily desk duties during the art prize.

As you prepare for the 5th anniversary event, what new ideas or highlights can the community look forward to in 2026?

Our 5th anniversary event will be celebrated on our opening night. This year we will be dedicating our Watercolour Prize to a very talented artist and supporter of the art prize, the late Roger Speaight.

Our ‘Children as Artists’ workshops will be a highlight for the younger members of our community. Five workshops will be held over three days. These are run by our local artists and provide children with different ideas and techniques to explore.

3-7 years on Thursday 8th, 8-12 years on 9th and teens on 10th January.

What do you hope the Bonny Hills Art Prize continues to represent for local artists and the wider creative community in the years ahead?

Our aim is to continue to deliver an engaging and vibrant art event to our community. We will continue to evolve and connect with creatives as a forum and bring these artworks into the limelight to showcase just how important art is in our ever-changing busy world.

Bonny Hills Art Prize opens to the public on Wednesday 6th and closes on 11th January 2026. Hours are 10 am – 4 pm.

THE PLAYERS THEATRE HAS HAD A VERY BUSY AND SUCCESSFUL 2025 SEASON!

We started the year with a laugh! The hilarious play “Clue: On Stage” based on the classic board game Cluedo and 1980s cult movie kept audiences laughing and guessing until the highly entertaining multiple ending, directed by Paul Bishop.

The dramatic Bonnie & Clyde the Musical was next, directed by first-timer Kate Simpson, with an amazing cast and band, telling the thrilling and fast-paced true story of real-life fugitive partners in crime across the USA in the 1930s.

Over the June long weekend we hosted another successful One Act Play Festival, where groups from across the country enjoyed Port Macquarie hospitality. Some of our own members won prizes in a tight but very entertaining competition of theatrical talent.

Our third play The Fine Art of Deception directed by Guenter Bieniasch was an Australian thriller about money, art and friendship with a dark twist ending.

We finish the year with Billy Elliot the Musical which is currently running until 14th December. Based on the British movie, with songs by Elton John, and directed by another first-timer Wil Ferguson, this inspiring show is making audiences laugh and cry.

Coming up next year we have another interesting selection of four very different shows. Starting in February with the Australian drama Neighbourhood Watch, which is studied by HSC students, directed by Hamish Keddie.

Followed by the musical Georgy Girl, based on the music of The Seekers, directed by Paul Addison, then the comedy farce play Don’t Dress For Dinner, directed by Steve Harris. Finally we have Come From Away directed by Lance Thompson. So another great year is ahead for ‘your community theatre’. More information about upcoming shows, as well as archives of years gone by, can be found at playerstheatre.org.au.

ANNIE& CO PET SERVICES

Annalie Hanke and Geoff Booms have built

Annie&Co Pet Services into a trusted hub for local pet owners, offering everything from grooming to behavioural support with a whole lot of heart. We sat down with the duo to chat about the passion, patience, and purpose behind their mission to help every dog - especially the tricky ones - feel safe, understood, and loved.

You offer a wide range of services from walking to grooming to in-home care. How did Annie&Co first come to life, and what inspired you to build a business centred around pets?

When we first moved to Port Macquarie four years ago, we quickly realised how incredibly dog-friendly the town is, there are dogs everywhere! We realised that the demand was here. I've had quite a few pets since I was little - rabbits, birds, dogs, stick insects, you name it, and Geoffrey grew up in France with seven labrador retrievers! We wanted to share our passion for pets with a convenient, one-stop business where most of our services are available all in one place for our customers. So we thought, why not put our knowledge and love for pets to work! Your work with fearful, anxious, or

reactive dogs is a standout. What led you to specialise in supporting dogs with behavioural or emotional challenges?

We truly didn’t want any dogs to feel left out. Everyday we learn about dog behavior and body language, aiming to understand those black sheep as deeply as possible. And above all, the reward, we, the dog owners and the dogs themselves experience when we begin to see positive changes in our 4 legged friends is absolutely incredible.

Can you walk us through what a behavioural support session looks like, and how you approach training differently for a nervous or reactive dog?

Let’s consider a grooming session with a reactive dog. It can be pretty tricky to build trust and respect in such a short amount of time. One of my favorite ways to ease into it is to take my client’s dog for a walk before we even step into the salon. That walk is a

great opportunity to share positive energy and help the dog see me as a confident, friendly leader. Once we’ve had a little time to connect, we can start introducing the salon, the table, the tools... It all takes time! What are some of the most common misconceptions owners have about dogs who struggle with fear or aggression? For pet owners struggling with behavioural issues at home, what are the first steps you’d recommend they take?

One of the most common misconceptions is the idea that "my dog can't be fixed" There is no such thing as a bad dog. Additionally, please do not hesitate to ask for help; we are here to support you and your pets, not to pass judgment. There are many experienced and talented dog trainers in Port Macquarie and surrounding areas who can assist you with your, and your dog’s needs. If you want a happy, balanced pup, just remember these three simple things: plenty of exercise to keep their body active, some discipline to help their mind stay sharp, and lots of love and affection to warm their heart. It never fails!

You’ve helped many dogs transform their confidence. Is there a particular success story that has stayed with you?

Absolutely! We rescued two precious great dane puppies just a few weeks old, abandoned and left in the bush. A brave ranger found them in fear and helpless, and they were placed into our care. Sadly, those

If you want a happy, balanced pup, just remember these three simple things: plenty of exercise to keep their body active, some discipline to help their mind stay sharp, and lots of love and affection to warm their heart

early traumas caused the puppies to develop fear and aggression toward humans, can you blame them after what they'd endured? But we refused to give up on them. We put a lot of time into helping these sweet souls heal, giving them a chance to learn that trust and love can conquer even the deepest fears. Today, they are now 9 months old and both turned into incredible family dogs, overflowing with love and happiness, and the best part? They are now cherished members of two wonderful families, loved and adored every single day!

You’re also deeply involved in fostering through your partnership with Animal Rescue Coffs Harbour. How did that relationship begin?

We're happy to offer free training for pound dogs who need a little extra help. One of ARCH's puppies had a tough time with leash walking and couldn’t get adopted because of it. We spent some quality time working with him, and he quickly overcame his fears! He was soon ready to find his forever home. ARCH shared his profile online, and within a week, he was happily adopted by his forever family.

What role does fostering play in your life and your business, and what does it mean to help prepare rescue animals for their forever homes?

Fostering is a rewarding experience, though it can also be emotionally challenging. We become quickly attached to these adorable dogs, but witnessing their daily progress and helping them become happy, well-adjusted pets for the rest of their lives is truly fulfilling.

We take our time with each foster pup to ensure they have the best opportunity for successful adoption. Our "Daily Dog Program" involves working with the dogs regularly to develop balanced behaviours. This includes exposing them to various environments such as cafes, restaurants, and shops to desensitise them to different situations. We bring our rescues along to help them become comfortable in diverse settings, which increases the likelihood of a successful and lasting bond with their future adopters. How can we find out more or get in touch?

You can check us out on Facebook at Annie&Co. Pet Services, or feel free to give us a call at 0468 310 273.

STROUD HOMES

SLONG-STANDING TREE PLANTING COMMITMENT

troud Homes is proud to partner with local organisations including Koala Conservation Australia (KCA) in Port Macquarie to preserve and regenerate koala habitat across the Mid North Coast. FOCUS spoke with Stroud Homes owners Joel and Alla Freeman, and Scott Castle from KCA, to discuss their most recent plantation success.

Firstly, for those not aware, Joel and Alla, can you illustrate Stroud Homes’ long-standing commitment to the planting of trees for every new home built?

For many years now, Stroud Homes has linked every new home it builds to a direct

environmental giveback through our ForestLink Program. In practical terms, that means for every Stroud Home built, Stroud Homes funds the planting of 15 trees in a local reforestation project.

The ForestLink is not a one-off or occasional effort.

Multi-award winning home builder Stroud Homes Port Macquarie, is proud of its continued commitment to planting 15 trees for every new home built. The ForestLink Program supports local reforestation projects in the Port Macquarie and Hastings region with an aim to give back to the community where new homes are built.

Projects are selected with forestry and landcare professionals to make sure planting is environmentally relevant and supports genuine habitat regeneration.

ForestLink is a Stroud Homes company-wide, ongoing policy across the franchise network, designed to ensure reforestation happens consistently wherever

Stroud Homes operates. Projects are selected with forestry and landcare professionals to make sure planting is environmentally relevant and supports genuine habitat regeneration.

Importantly, Stroud’s contribution goes beyond simply putting trees in the ground.

The Stroud Homes Port Macquarie made a significant contribution and the team had a very successful day of planting koala food trees at our plantation.

Whilst our whole team love getting out of the office to get their hands dirty on planting days, ForestLink funding also helps with site preparation and early-stage care (like weed and grass control) so the saplings have the best chance to survive and thrive, reinforcing that Stroud Homes is committed to real outcomes, not just symbolic planting.

How does Stroud Homes’ approach further demonstrate the brand’s commitment to environmentally conscious business practices?

At Stroud Homes, the ForestLink program is part of who we are. Because it’s a companywide policy across more than 40 Stroud builders across Australia and New Zealand, it shows that caring for the environment isn’t left to chance or individual choice, it’s something we do together, everywhere we build. Construction inevitably interacts with the land, and Stroud Homes isn’t pretending otherwise. Instead, ForestLink acts as a form of restoration

that sits alongside growth. It acknowledges the footprint of building homes and responds by reinvesting in regeneration, rebuilding habitat in the same communities where Stroud Homes is building futures for families.

We partner with forestry professionals to ensure each project we support is environmentally relevant and suited to the local ecosystem. Their expertise helps us select areas where native forest regeneration will provide long term benefits for wildlife, waterways, and future generations.

Recently the Stroud Homes team joined forces with Koala Conservation Australia to plant trees on one of three koala food tree plantations. Scott, can you tell us about the achievements made within this project?

Stroud Homes Port Macquarie made a significant contribution and the team had a very successful day of planting koala food trees at our plantation. Our plantation trees help feed the sick and injured koalas in our Koala

Hospital, and the koalas in our Wild Koala Breeding Program. It takes a lot of food to keep our koalas happy, so we really appreciate the noble gesture of Stroud Homes planting koala habitat for the resident wild koalas around the plantation.

Scott, can you share some of the invaluable work your team has provided in supporting and preserving koala habitat within the region?

KCA collaborates with the NSW State Government in its koala strategy, and organisations such as Landcare, to increase or regenerate existing koala habitat across the Mid North Coast. KCA has 68 hectares of native forest which is protected in perpetuity under a Conservation Agreement, which includes areas where endangered plants and animals occur.

The area in our plantation where Stroud Homes planted trees, will also be protected, and most importantly, will feed the koalas living in the area for generations to come! Thank you all. Interview: Sarah Baker.

Your menu has launched with some exciting new additions. What inspired the latest changes, and what can customers expect from the new offerings?

There is something for everyone on our current menu. We’ve got the classics, something different, grab and go options and baked goods perfect to give yourself a little treat. When we last updated our menu, we really wanted to tap into what the customers wanted and ensure no matter what you like, there will be something that takes your fancy!

Can you walk us through a few of the standout dishes or drinks on the new menu and what makes them special to Bandwagon?

There’s so many delicious dishes to choose from, but let’s talk about the Hot Honey Haloumi. It has sweet and spicy marinated haloumi, sliced avocado, poached eggs, dukkah, and a balsamic glaze on sourdough. It is the perfect combination of sweet and savoury, with a subtle spicy warmth. This dish has been a standout customer favourite. We actually ran this as a special, and it was so popular we knew we had to put it on the menu!

BANDWAGON

Bandwagon steps into summer with a refreshed menu, standout flavours, and a vibrant community spirit, serving the dishes, brews, and warm atmosphere Port Macquarie loves.

Coming into our warmer months, there is nothing better than a crisp cold brew. We make our cold brew with a slow-brewed submersion method. We submerge the coffee for 18-24 hours and then finely filter it to produce a beautiful clear, clean, flavoursome drop. To make it next level, we now have cold brew topped with cold foam. Cold foam is a topping for chilled drinks, made from aerated cream, creating a creamy, silky, tasty layer that floats on top of the cold brew. We’ve currently got a Maple Sea-Salt flavoured Cold Foam on offer. Stay tuned for more flavours.

How do you approach menu development; are you driven by local produce, customer feedback, culinary trends, or something entirely different?

This is a great question! We take a very holistic view to menu development. We listen to our chefs, we’re aware of what seasonal local produce is thriving, we speak to our customers and we like to be across what’s hot right now. Whenever we’re travelling, we are visiting as many cafes as we can to scope what’s on offer and what people are loving.

Sometimes, we might take a particular ingredient we are excited about, and build an entire dish around it, to make that ingredient

shine. An example of that is our Smoked Trout Hash. It’s all about the trout, and pairing it with ingredients that compliment the delicate fish. In fact, we loved the trout so much, we then designed a Trout Caesar Salad.

The trout dish was inspired by a breakfast we tried in a lovely little café in Bellingen. Our dish is quite different, but that’s what sparked the idea Similarly, after a trip to Portugal last year, the inspiration was limitless.

Bandwagon has become a favourite gathering spot in Port Macquarie. What do you think sets your café apart in such a vibrant local food scene?

Firstly, we endeavour to provide a customer focused service where everyone feels welcome and valued. We love our customers and we want our space to bring people together. Whether it’s friends meeting for brunch, a business lunch, a family gathering or even a first date, Bandy is the place to go! We’re located just far enough from the chaos of the CBD, but close enough to be accessible.

On top of that, we just have the most beautiful space! We’ve got indoor, semi-outdoor and outdoor seating to suit everyone. The wood finish throughout the café gives a lovely homey feel. If you want to sit at the bar for a quick

coffee, no worries; you want a large table booking, we can do that; an intimate booth for you and a friendwe have that too!

Many people may not realise you offer functions and private events. What types of events can Bandwagon host, and what makes the space unique for celebrations?

Trends come in and out, but quality never does. What’s more important than trying to chase a trend, is focusing on good quality. This is our number one priority.

know who Johnny is and what he’s about. The way he treats his customers is second to none - he will go above and beyond to ensure you have a great experience. Johnny has extensive coffee knowledge and experience, and he goes alright in the kitchen too!

Current opening hours: Monday to Friday: 7am to 3pm (kitchen closes 2.30pm) Saturday and Sunday: 7am to 12noon.

Hospitality trends shift quickly. How do you stay fresh, relevant, and consistently deliver the quality your regulars love?

Trends come in and out, but quality never does. What’s more important than trying to chase a trend, is focusing on good quality. This is our number one priority.

We’ve got a great space for functions, birthday parties, Christmas parties, baby-showers and meetings. We haven’t done a reception yet but I reckon we could make it work!

We can seat 70-80, and accommodate a standing event of up to 100 guests. We’ve got a fully stocked bar, that’s been known to produce some pretty epic cocktails! Our space is nice and open so it’s great for mingling. You have an awesome team alongside you, can you introduce them to our readers?

All of our staff are amazing and contribute something special to our business. There’s too many to name them all so we’ll focus on a few.

Beau is our front of house wizard. He greets every customer with a big smile, usually while slinging coffees behind the machine. This man knows his coffee. He is also exceptionally skilled at ensuring the smooth running of our café behind the scenes.

Johnny. If you have been into our café, you

Dan. Dan is our Head Chef and he originates from Colombia and has had a passion for food from a young age. Dan started his apprenticeship in Colombia and gained valuable experience working as a chef in Melbourne before his move to Port Macquarie 3 years ago. Every business has a story. What inspired the creation of Bandwagon, and how has the café evolved since opening? Bandwagon opened in Port Macquarie in November 2017. We took the reins 2 years ago and we couldn’t be happier with the direction we’re going. Over the last 2 years we’ve listened to customers, tailored our food and drinks and put a lot of effort into creating a welcoming space that fosters community. That’s what Bandwagon is all about. Tell us about the new opening times for the holiday and summer season. We are back in action 7 days a week. We want to ensure our customers have access to Bandy every day during the busiest time of the year.

Offering a new product that’s currently trending can be fun and interesting, but we have to make sure the quality is there and it is not a rushed process.

As mentioned previously, we may experiment with a trend as a special, to see whether it’s something our customers enjoy, before making it a permanent offering.

For readers who haven’t visited yet, what’s the one thing you’d love them to know about Bandwagon, and why should they make it their next coffee or dining stop?

Oh if you haven’t given it a try, you’re missing out! At Bandy we are truly passionate about our coffee. Our coffee beans are from Marvell St Coffee, who take such care in sourcing only the best. We take time every morning to carefully dial in our machine to ensure every extraction is on point. We use the best quality milks, that allow our coffee to shine. Come and get your brew from the people who love coffee as much as you do!

BAGO TAVERN - THE PLACE TO BE

December…. the month of plenty. The pace of life moves up a few notches and all of a sudden there’s no such thing as a chilled-out weekend. Actually, make that chilled out five minutes in fact!

There’s something about this month that makes many of us a bit crazy. A potent combination of the onset of summer, the increasing frenzy of hurtling towards Christmas, the projects and deadlines of work to be completed before the summer holidays. And then of course there’s the ramping up of one’s social life to off the richter scale proportions!

Christmas parties, graduations, leaving dos, presentations and award ceremonies. You name it, it all happens in December. Kris Kringles, long lunches, office parties and all kinds of shindigs go down.

And so they should you say – bottoms up - and cheers!

December is kind of like a ‘get-out-jail-free’ card. All those tightly held and most virtuous routines and regimes can now be abandoned with glee! Exercise? Who seriously has enough time for that in December! Healthy eating? It is now mandatory for salads and smoothies at

CHEERS!

Palate

lunch to be replaced by carbs and champers. Work? Well considering that there’s still stuff to be done it is rather amazing that it can be perfectly ok for the work day to end at 12pm on the dot and for you team to retire to the pub around the corner till at least knock off time.

Of course all of this merriment calls for the opening of many bottles of the alcoholic kind. Now’s the time to take to your tipple. Whether it’s a mean martini, a cold brew or a never-ending supply of bubbles, ‘tis the season.

Distillers, brewers and winemakers across the globe contribute lavishly to sore heads on every street….

Our livers might say yes but somehow we yet again are swept away by the season. It becomes second nature to once again head off into the night for another soiree.

Now’s the time to take to your tipple. Whether it’s a mean martini, a cold brew or a never-ending supply of bubbles, ‘tis the season.

Yet somehow the glee and gloss of December starts to wear a little thin and we may start to crave a little down time and a lot of detox. But bravely we soldier on as we know it’s a long old haul till January 10.

Is there a better way? Do we even want to mess with the time-honoured traditions of December?

Let’s face it - this is the time that everyone wants to congregate, in that frenetic way where each and every buddy you’ve ever been meaning to catch up with will say “we MUST catch up for a drink before Christmas!” It’s your social life on steroids… all those months of winter hibernation and social deprivation are made up for and then some.

As they say, it doesn’t just rain, it pours… and that’s not just the sound of the beer taps and vino bottles flowing. Luckily there’s always New Year’s resolutions to be sworn and of course… Dry January.

It all just might make you want to hide under a rock until 2026… but whichever way you decide to tackle December, fill it with friends family, delicious food and lots of love.

Cheers!

CASSEGRAIN WINES

A TASTE OF TRADITION, SINCE

1985

Family owned and operated, Cassegrain Wines has long been renowned as a destination for fine wines. is month, the team celebrates the milestone of 40 years since opening. FOCUS caught up with the Cassegrain family and team to find out what’s in-store for this December and the future.

Hi team, congratulations on reaching such an important milestone in business. What is your secret and can you give us an overview of the evolution of the brand since inception in 1985.

Thank you Sarah, it’s a milestone we’re very proud of. Our “secret,” if anything, has been staying true to our founding philosophy. We combine the French winemaking traditions our family started back in 1643 in Bordeaux, France, with Australian innovation and knowhow through technology. We continue to only source grapes from New South Wales, allowing us to maintain consistent, yet agile, while still reflecting our coastal home.

From humble beginnings, Cassegrain’s core philosophy has resulted in a unique point of difference. Can you share a little about your diverse portfolio? Our portfolio has grown to reflect both

our heritage and the diversity of NSW wine regions. We produce a wide range of styles, yet they each share the same philosophy. Wines that are full of flavour, soft in texture and elegantly balanced. We cover the full range of price points from our Stone Circle wines, up to our Reserve wines. Our whites are shaped by freshness and purity. Rosé has become one of our best sellers, and one of the fastest growing styles. Our reds showcase depth without heaviness. Each vintage is slightly different, but the aim is always consistency, approachability and a clear sense of style.

and awards for the business including recognition for your exporting expertise as well as wins for many varietals of wines produced over the years. How do you strive to continue to improve and evolve your products?

We produce a wide range of styles, yet they each share the same philosophy. Wines that are full of flavour, so in texture and elegantly balanced.

There has been numerous accolades

While we are proud of the 700+ awards we have received, they’re not what drives us. What keeps us evolving is a genuine curiosity and a willingness to try new things. We are always keen to explore different NSW regions for fruit, trial small-batch varieties, or adjusting our approach to reflect changing tastes and trends. Wine styles move over time, and it’s important that what we produce feels current, relevant and enjoyable for today’s drinkers.

Over the last four decades there have been numerous highlights and milestones that have encouraged and fostered the growth and continued success of the business. Can you share some highlights?

We source grapes from the 10 major wine regions across New South Wales. Each site has it’s own climate, soil, and character, which influences the wine styles we create.

The three that come to mind are recent highlights. The first was winning ASVO Winemaker of the Year in 2021, the first time someone from NSW had won. Secondly, when myself and my brother created Avenir Vigneron Pty Ltd, allowing us to acquire Cassegrain Wines in 2023. The most recent is establishing taste@cassegrain in 2024. It’s been deeply rewarding to work closely with our chefs on seasonal dishes that pair with our wines, and to see it become a popular destination in the region.

Where do you predominantly source grapes for production and as a result can

you illustrate how different varieties of wines are produced?

We source grapes from the 10 major wine regions across New South Wales. Each site has its own climate, soil, and character, which influences the wine styles we create. For example, cooler sites help develop crisp, lifted flavours, while warmer regions give red varieties their richness, soft tannins and layered fruit. By embracing these regional differences, we craft wines that are both expressive and balanced, letting each variety shine while reflecting the unique conditions and personality of its origin. What is on the horizon for the business for the year ahead?

We are about to begin renovating our winery and the wider grounds. This is due to the increase in events, functions, and groups we are hosting, and will give us additional

capacity for future plans. This month the Mid North Coast Markets will be at the winery every Sunday (formally known as the Hamilton Green markets, which were held at Hibbard on Hastings River Drive).

Internationally, we continue exporting into China and Japan, with interest from several new markets. Nationally, we have appointed Vintage House Wine & Spirits, owned by 5th Generation Angove Family Winemakers, to be the exclusive distributor in Australia. You can find us in over 25+ venues on the Mid North Coast, with more coming on board every month.

For people wanting to connect with Cassegrain Wines, how can they best get in touch?

Give us a call on (02) 6582 8324, or come visit us. Cellar Door is open 7 days a week, and our restaurant is open Wednesday to Sunday. Check out our website for more information cassegrainwines.com.au

TIME

with ALEX CASSEGRAIN

CHIEF WINEMAKER CASSEGRAIN WINES

Thoughtful Bottles for Every Occasion.

Wine is a timeless gift: personal without being overly familiar, indulgent without being excessive; but the key to gifting well is choosing a wine that feels meaningful for the moment.

Here’s how to select the right bottle from Cassegrain when you want your gift to truly stand out.

For the Celebration

Sparkling Blanc de Blanc. Sparkling wine signals excitement and joy. Whether it’s a birthday, engagement, milestone at work or simply a “you deserve this”, bubbles always land well. For an extra gesture, pair with a Cellar Door tasting voucher.

For the Food Lover

Chardonnay would be a good choice if they

love cooking or dining at the region’s top spots because it is a wine that shines at the table. Fresh, balanced whites elevate almost any dish and are a hit with coastal cuisine.

For the Red Wine Loyalist

A Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot blend is the classic choice with versatile food pairings. These wines strike that ideal balance of approachability and structure.

Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot is a great example. An alternative white blend we are proud of is our Verdelho, Piquepoul Blanc, and Chardonnay. Add a Personal Touch

Sparkling wine signals excitement and joy. Whether it’s a birthday, engagement, milestone at work or simply a “you deserve this”, bubbles always land well.

For the Curious Sipper Blends of three varieties offer exciting exploration of varieties, offering depth whilst still getting an exciting experience. A 'Bordeaux Blend' like Cabernet

Ask questions of the retailer of the wine, to help elevate your gift. You could include:

• A handwritten card noting why you chose that bottle or your connection to it

• A pairing suggestion for their next meal

• The story behind the wine

Gifting wine is about shared connections, and the moment it’s opened it becomes a part of the celebration.

The Art of the Perfect Wine Gift.

What’s in

Season

If there’s one fruit that sums up an Australian Christmas in a single bite, it’s the cherry. Bright, glossy, festive, and bursting with flavour, cherries are the unofficial jewels of December, an edible celebration of everything we love about summer. You’ll see them piled high in Growers Market, sitting proudly on display, and disappearing faster than anything else from the kitchen counter the moment someone walks past.

It makes sense, cherries aren’t around for long, and when they do arrive, they arrive with a bang. December is the peak of cherry season in Australia, and it’s when they’re at their sweetest, juiciest, and (thankfully) most affordable. They’re the kind of fruit that feels like a treat just by looking at them, which is probably why no Christmas feels complete without a big bowl sitting on the table.

Cherries are one of the most seasonal fruits you’ll find. Unlike apples or bananas that are available year round, cherries have a short, intense window, usually from late November until early January. That six week stretch is all the time you get to enjoy them, which makes them feel special before you’ve even tried one. December is when growers from Victoria, Tasmania, and NSW start sending their harvest to markets. Supply increases, quality peaks, and the prices, mercifully, begin to drop. It’s the sweet spot where cherries become accessible enough to pile into the trolley without guilt, for Christmas lunch or just a sunny day snack.

CHERRIES THE CROWN JEWEL OF CHRISTMAS

Talk to anyone in the produce industry and they’ll tell you. There are two types of cherries BC (Before Christmas) and AC (After Christmas)

BC cherries are those premium early season beauties that arrive in late November and early December. They’re incredible in flavour and firmness, but often come with a price tag to match. AC cherries, on the other hand, flood the market from Boxing Day into January. By then, volumes are huge, prices usually take a dive, and suddenly cherries become an everyday luxury.

December however, sits right in that magical middle ground with solid supply and exceptional quality, and, because cherries are at their peak freshness, they’re perfect for everything from snacking to desserts (I like mine with Nutella..) to festive decorations (they make grazing boards look like a work of art)!

There’s something uniquely Aussie about cherry season. Maybe it’s because they’re a symbol of summer. Maybe it’s because they’re only around for a short time. Maybe it’s because they remind us of childhood Christmases, backyard cricket, ice buckets filled with cold drinks, and sticky fingers after reaching into the fruit bowl one too many times.

Cherries bring a touch of luxury without being pretentious. They’re simple, nostalgic, and perfectly at home in the chaos of an Australian Christmas. It’s not just their flavour that makes cherries special, they’re nutritional

powerhouses too, being high in antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium, and fibre.

Cherries are also known for their antiinflammatory properties, and some varieties contain melatonin, which can help support sleep. A fruit that’s delicious, good for your skin, and helps you wind down after a big day? It’s basically nature’s version of a spa treatment.

If you want the best cherries look for:

• Deep, rich colour – the darker the cherry (within its variety), the sweeter it often is.

• Firm skin with no wrinkles – cherries should feel plump and full, not soft or shrivelled.

• Fresh green stems – a bright green stem usually means the fruit was picked recently.

• A little shine – good cherries naturally have a glossy sheen.

Store cherries in the fridge to keep them crisp and fresh, and don’t wash them until just before eating. For maximum flavour, sit at room temperature 20 minutes before serving.

Scatter them over pavlova, fold them through salads, pair them with chocolate, or simply serve them on ice. For something a bit special, add them to a cheese platter, cherries brighten up rich cheeses and salty crackers beautifully. Cherries are more than just fruit, they’re a tradition. A signal that Christmas is here and summer is in full swing. Be sure to grab a bag (or two) at the top end of Gordon St and get yourself a bargain at Growers Market.

Hi Tye. What first sparked your passion for creating handcrafted preserves, and how did that evolve into launching your own small-batch jam business?

My passion for handcrafted preserves started when a friend’s kumquat tree gave lots of fruit and I didn’t want it to go to waste, so I made marmalade and shared it with others. That’s when I realised I had a knack for making it. I began playing with jam-themed song lyric puns like Cher’s ‘If I could turn back time, if I could find a way’ and turned it into ‘If I could make that jam, maybe some marmalade’.. which inspired the idea for Spread ‘Em. A friend believed in me and gave me a small startup fund of $500, which helped me launch Finnegan’s Spread ‘Em on 27 February 2023. Your range includes both classic flavours and more adventurous, liqueur-infused creations. How do you approach developing new recipes, and what inspires your flavour combinations?

TYE FINNEGAN

FINNEGAN’S SPREAD ‘EM

From a surplus of homegrown kumquats to small-batch jams infused with liqueurs and cheeky humour, Tye Finnegan has turned a spontaneous kitchen experiment into the vibrant local brand Finnegan’s Spread ’Em. We sat down with the jam-maker, lyric punner and market favourite to chat about creativity, community, and the delicious journey behind his cult-followed preserves.

It’s a lot of trial and error. The idea came about when one night very late I was making triple berry jam and drinking wine at the same time. I smelt them both and thought “hey, this goes together!” I poured some wine in it and a few spices and created a mulled wine jam called “Mulled By Midnight: Triple Berry Jam with Cabernet Sauvignon”. Then I thought maybe I could put liqueur in them. I started to provide a service called “Spread ‘Em Your Way” where I have customers email in their own custom jam flavour creations to info@spreademhq.com. au, which also comes with a custom designed label with their name on it or the person they’re gifting it to. One customer gave me a bottle of butterscotch liqueur and asked for Banana & Butterscotch Liqueur Jam, so that’s how that flavour was born. I’m also a bartender so I’m quite familiar with liqueurs and their flavours and what works.

Quality craftsmanship is at the heart of what you do. What steps or techniques set your preserves apart from mass-produced jams on the market?

I’ll answer this without giving away my secrets!

Mine are all small batched and are cooked over a period of 2-8 hours. Some of the flavours I provide you won’t find anywhere else. I love seeing people’s faces when they sample my jams at markets. They’re especially surprised when they taste the Orange Marmalade and how there is zero bitterness to it. It’s apparently the best orange marmalade they’ve ever had. When I was creating my Lemon & Triple Sec Curd I was thinking “how the hell does the lemon curd at the supermarket have such a long shelf life?” Then I looked at the ingredients and saw that it had no lemon or anything natural in it at all!

Tell us about the local produce you work with, how important is sourcing and seasonality to your process?

Sourcing quality produce is a vital part of my jam-making process and I carefully select fruit that meets my standards for flavour and freshness. I pay close attention to seasonality, which influences the varieties I offer at different times of the year, ensuring that my products reflect the best tastes each season brings. Luckily my ‘Flavourites Collection’ range is

available all year round!

Many small food businesses have a defining moment when they realise they’re onto something special. What was that moment for you?

I will be regularly trading at Real Food Market every Tuesday in the Hay St Forecourt, every second Saturday at the Foreshore Market and every fourth Sunday at Town Square Market.

I think it was my first market in St Kilda, Melbourne, November of 2023. I had made over $300 that day and had been getting really good feedback. My Mum came down and bought some jam and went up and down all of the stalls saying “this jam is the best!” By the end of the day every stall holder knew who I was, it was hilarious! But also, to be honest, being featured in this magazine is a pretty big deal too!

What does a typical production day look like behind the scenes at Finnegan’s Spread ’Em?

I’ll typically roll out of bed about 10-ish, prepare 2 jams for that day. Cut all the fruit up, let it sit

in the sugar for a few hours. In the meantime I might watch some Judge Judy or do some social networking for the business. Then I finish off the jams or let them sit a bit longer if they’re not ready, and leave them on the table to set while I go to work at the Port City Bowling Club - jam enthusiast by day, bartender by night!

Do you have a personal favourite spread in your collection, and what makes it stand out to you?

Oh wow, that’s like choosing a favourite child! I’m going to have to say the Lemon & Triple Sec Curd. I try so hard not to just eat it with a spoon straight from the jar, I think it’s delicious. The label on it is pretty cool too.

How has the Port Macquarie community influenced or supported the growth of your business so far?

By just coming down to the markets! I love meeting new customers and returning faces. Everybody here has been lovely so far.

Looking ahead, what’s next for Finnegan’s Spread ’Em - any new flavours, markets, or projects on the horizon that readers can look forward to?

I will be regularly trading at the Real Food Market every Tuesday in the Hay St Forecourt; every second Saturday at the Foreshore Market and every fourth Sunday at Town Square Market. I’m also releasing a new limited edition flavour - Pineapple & Melon Liqueur Jam! Perfect for summer coming up.

Where can we find your products, find out more info or follow your journey?

Swing on over to Spreademhq.com.au or visit my instagram @finneganspreadem and stay up to date with any markets I’m attending or any competitions I’m holding.

Thanks Tye.

STAY SAFE THIS

FESTIVE SEASON HASTINGS LIQUOR ACCORD

PLAN AHEAD WITH

The festive season is here, bringing with it celebrations, social gatherings, and time spent with family and friends. It’s also a time to relax, enjoy good company, and indulge in the vibrant nightlife that our local venues offer. At the Hastings Liquor Accord, we encourage everyone to make the most of this season responsibly and safely.

Our message is simple: Leave your car at home as you enjoy our licensed premises this festive season. We’re reminding our community of the importance of planning ahead to get home safely after a night out. Whether you’re meeting friends at a pub, dining at a local restaurant, or attending an end-of-year work party, the key to a safe and enjoyable celebration is having a “Plan B.”

Why You Need a Plan B. During the holidays, increased social gatherings can lead to a higher likelihood of impaired driving incidents. A good Plan B ensures that you can enjoy the festivities without the worry of how to get home safely. It might be booking a taxi, nominating a designated driver, or taking the advantage of venue courtesy buses. Whatever your Plan B looks like, make sure it’s in place before you head out.

The Importance of Responsible Drinking

The Hastings Liquor Accord is committed to promoting responsible drinking and reducing

the harm associated with alcohol misuse.

Our licensed premises are proud to offer a welcoming environment where patrons can enjoy themselves responsibly.

This season, many venues are hosting special events, live music, and festive menus. To fully enjoy these experiences, it’s vital to pace yourself, drink water between alcoholic beverages, and know your limits. Remember, celebrating responsibly not only keeps you safe but also ensures a more enjoyable experience for everyone around you.

Whether you’re meeting friends at a pub, dining at a local restaurant, or attending an end-of-year work party, the key to a safe and enjoyable celebration is having a “Plan B.”

How Local Venues Support Safe Celebrations. Our local licensed venues play a key role in promoting safety during the festive season. From providing safe transport information to offering non-alcoholic beverage options and encouraging patrons to plan ahead, these venues are actively supporting the message: don’t drink and drive.

Some venues have courtesy buses so next time you visit one of our licensed premises, don’t hesitate to ask staff for advice on transport options if you haven’t already arranged a Plan B.

A Community Commitment. The Hastings Liquor Accord is a partnership between local

businesses, NSW Police, government agencies, and community organisations. Our shared goal is to create a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone. This festive season, we’re asking all community members to join us in prioritising safety.

By choosing to leave your car at home and planning your journey responsibly, you’re contributing to a safer, more enjoyable festive period for everyone in our community.

Make This Festive Season Memorable for the Right Reasons. As the holidays approach, remember that celebrations should be a time of joy, not regret. A little forethought goes a long way in ensuring everyone gets home safely and avoids the devastating consequences of drink driving.

So, what’s your Plan B? Whether it’s catching a cab, arranging a designated driver, or staying overnight, make sure you have a solid plan in place. Together, we can make this festive season one to remember, for all the right reasons.

From all of us at the Hastings Liquor Accord, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

CHRISTMAS -MERRY-

A SPECIAL FOCUS FEATURE

From a home kitchen filled with the smell of gingerbread to markets buzzing with festive treats, MMM Tasty Treats is a small business with a big local following. Pastry chef and owner Amy shares the inspiration behind her creations, the heart of her 2025 Christmas range, and the joy that continues to shape her growing brand.

MMM

TASTY TREATS

Cbehind MMM Tasty Treats and what inspired you to start the business?

I trained as a pastry chef and worked in the industry before we had children. I’ve absolutely loved being at home with them in those early years, but as they grew, it was time to return to work in some capacity. A home-based bakery felt like the perfect balance. It allows me to use my skills, contribute to our family, and still remain present with the kids.

What sets MMM Tasty Treats apart from other local treat and dessert makers?

The feedback I hear most often is about flavour. People want something that feels homemade, but still tastes exceptional. I put a lot of energy into making sure everything looks beautiful, but more importantly, that each item tastes even better than it looks. What does a typical day look like behind the scenes in your kitchen or production space?

Every day is different in a home bakery and as a business owner. Each week brings different orders and different levels of preparation and planning are needed. I like to come into my kitchen prepared and with a plan as it makes

the flow of baking, cooling, decorating and packing much easier, and I love being efficient in my work. I do a good clean up and set down of my space before I begin and then get my mixer and oven cranking. How do you decide which products make it onto your menu throughout the year?

Most items are available year-round, but certain products are better suited to particular seasons. For example, caramel slice doesn’t love the heat of summer at markets, though I still supply it to cafés all year. I create a range of winter cupcakes for the colder months, and I always produce themed items for Easter and Christmas, so there’s definitely a seasonal flavour to the menu.

What are some of your most popular signature treats that customers come back for again and again?

It really depends on the customer. Everyone has such different tastes, and we see regulars returning for all sorts of things; melting moments, cinnamon buns, gingerbread, vanilla cupcakes and more. It’s actually hard to predict what will be most popular on any given day, which keeps things interesting. Tell us about your 2025 Christmas range. During December, our home smells like

gingerbread almost constantly, because gingerbread is the heart of our Christmas range. We offer a range of decorated gingerbread items. Our gingerbread biscuits are always a hit, especially at markets, and both small and large gingerbread houses which make the perfect centrepiece for a Christmas table or to take to a party to enjoy. For families or groups wanting a festive activity, we have large house decorating kits that include everything you need: the gingerbread pieces, icing, piping bags, lollies, a board, cellophane, ribbon, and step-by-step instructions. We also offer biscuit-decorating kits for younger children, which come with 10 biscuits, 2 icing bags and plenty of lollies to decorate. These kits have been a huge hit, they’re fun, delicious, and one of my favourites to sell as I know how much they are enjoyed as my own kids love them! We also offer a gluten-free gingerbread option. Beyond gingerbread, we have colourful Christmas-themed sugar cookies, a range of festive cupcakes (Vanilla Wreath, Red Velvet Holly, Chocolate Reindeer and Gingerbread), and a Christmas-loaded brownie topped with lots of goodies.

What flavours or themes inspired your Christmas collection?

As a Christian, Christmas is a time of deep joy and meaning for me. It celebrates the moment Jesus came into the world bringing hope, peace and life. I want the Christmas range to reflect that, be full of colour, flavour and a sense of celebration. How far in advance do you begin planning and testing your Christmas recipes?

Watching families build and enjoy them together is always really special. Sometimes customers will send me photos of their family enjoying their gingerbread house, and this is always a real joy for me.

I have some ‘go to’ Christmas recipes that are tried and tested and never fail me for flavour and are always a hit. I do like to introduce new products to my range so there is testing around recipes that happens in the months before Christmas. As for the full range, I need it finalised at least three months in advance so everything is ready for the Christmas season.

Which Christmas item has been the most popular so far, or which one do you predict will sell out first?

Gingerbread is consistently our most popular item, especially the large houses and the decorating kits. They tend to sell out quickly every year.

Do you offer custom orders or corporate gifting options for Christmas?

Yes, we often prepare mixed boxes for corporate events, Christmas parties and end-of-year gatherings. We’ve also supplied bulk Gingerbread Biscuit Decorating Kits for workplace events which have been a lot of fun. We try to work in with what the customer wants and can often customise most of our products to suit their needs.

What is your favourite Christmas treat to make, and why?

I love making gingerbread houses. They bring together creativity, tradition and a sense of celebration. Watching families build and enjoy them together is always really special. Sometimes customers will send me photos of their family enjoying their gingerbread house, and this is always a real joy for me. How can customers order, and what are the cut-off dates for Christmas delivery or pickup?

The easiest way to order is by messaging us on Facebook or sending us an email at mmmtastytreats.amy@gmail.com. We’re fulfilling orders right up until Christmas Eve, but we generally book out by mid-December,

so it’s best to get in early.

You can also find us at local markets and events throughout December, where you can purchase directly or place an order:

• Friday 5 December - PMHC Christmas Fair

• Saturday 13 December - Port Macquarie Foreshore Markets

• Monday 15 December - Port Central Shopping Centre

• Saturday 20 December - Port Macquarie Town Square Markets

• Sunday 21 December - Laurieton Riverwalk Markets

What are your goals for MMM Tasty Treats heading into the new year?

As we enter the new year we hope to continue to provide high quality tasty treats for people to enjoy.

What message would you like to share with your customers and community this Christmas?

Christmas is a time of hope. As a Christian, this season holds deep meaning for me, not just because of family and celebration, but because it reminds us that God entered the world to bring a hope that lasts forever. My prayer is that this hope would be found by everyone this Christmas.

Thanks Amy.

LILLY HOEY SUMMERLAND HEALTH

Each Christmas, Summerland Health rallies the community through its annual Toy Drive, bringing together sta , patients, families, and locals to help spread joy to children in need. In this interview, Dr. Brendan & Lilly Hoey share why the tradition ma ers, impact it has on local families, and how the community can get involved to make this year brighter than ever. the families,

This year marks another big toy drive for your team. What motivates Summerland Health to run this initiative each Christmas?

Every year we are reminded that our clinics are part of a much bigger community. The toy drive is our way of giving back to the families who support us throughout the year. We believe every child deserves to feel the excitement and joy of Christmas morning, and knowing that we can play a small role in that is what keeps us motivated. It brings our team, our patients, and our whole community together for a really meaningful cause.

Can you share a little about the impact these donations have on local families and why supporting children during the festive season is so important?

These donations go directly to local families who are doing it tough - families who may otherwise struggle to provide gifts during the Christmas period. The impact is huge.

T O Y D R I V E

For many children, receiving a new toy on Christmas morning is more than just a present; it is a moment of joy, normalcy, and hope. Supporting kids at this time of year helps ease the pressure on parents and makes the season brighter for families who need it most.

For people wanting to contribute, what types of toys or items are most helpful for the drive?

New, unopened toys are ideal - anything from baby toys all the way up to gifts suitable for teenagers. Things like board games, books, craft kits, sports gear, puzzles, dolls, cars, and sensory toys are always appreciated. We want donations that are fun, safe, and suitable for kids aged 0 - 16, as this helps the charity match gifts to children of all ages. Including gifts for teens is especially important, as they’re often the hardest group to buy for yet deeply grateful for something chosen with them in mind. No matter the size or type of gift, every contribution helps bring joy to a child in our local community this Christmas. You’ve chosen to keep donations

unwrapped and suitable for a wide age range. Why are these guidelines important for the charities you partner with?

Keeping donations unwrapped allows the charities to sort items properly and make sure each gift goes to a child who will truly enjoy it. It also helps them maintain safety standards and ensure age-appropriate matching. Having a wide range of ages covered means no child misses out. Whether they are a newborn, a primary-schooler, or a teenager, these guidelines make the distribution smoother, fairer, and far more effective.

Community support seems to grow each year. What has the response been like so far, and what does that say about the local spirit?

The response has been incredibly heartwarming. Each year we see more families, patients, and even people who have never visited our clinics dropping in to donate. It really shows the kind of community we live in. One that looks out for each other

and steps up when it matters. The generosity we see reflects a strong local spirit that values kindness, connection, and making sure no child is left behind at Christmas.

The generosity we see reflects a strong local spirit that values kindness, connection, and making sure no child is left behind at Christmas.

Your clinics play a big role in coordinating the collection. How have your teams embraced the toydrive tradition internally?

Our team absolutely loves this time of year. The toy drive has become something everyone genuinely looks forward to, almost like a tradition that brings its own energy into the clinics. Our staff get excited decorating the clinics, talking with patients about the cause, and watching the donation piles grow day by day. There’s this buzz in the aireveryone feels part of something bigger than themselves.

It brings a real sense of unity and shared purpose to our workplace. Team members collaborate across clinics, brainstorm ways to encourage donations, and celebrate each

milestone together. For many on our team, seeing the community come together so generously is a powerful reminder of why they chose a caring profession in the first place. It reinforces the values we stand for: compassion, connection, and contributing to the wellbeing of the people we serve - not just as healthcare providers, but as neighbours and community members too.

You’ve worked closely with organisations who distribute the toys. What does this partnership mean for your team and the broader community?

Partnering with organisations like the Salvation Army allows us to ensure the gifts reach the families who need them most. It means our efforts have real impact and are part of a larger, coordinated support system. For our team, it’s a privilege to connect with groups doing such important work. For the community, it means their donations are distributed fairly, amplifying the good that everyone contributes.

How do you hope this year’s drive will grow or evolve compared to past years? Are there any goals you’re particularly excited about?

Every year we aim to collect more toys than the year before, simply because it means more children will experience a brighter Christmas. Last year we reached over 350 toys, and we’d love to surpass that. But beyond the numbers, we’re excited to grow awareness, encouraging more people to get involved, share the message, and even inspire other local businesses to run similar initiatives. The real goal is to expand the ripple effect of generosity

How can community members go about making donations?

Donating is simple, just drop a new, unwrapped toy into either our Port Macquarie or Wauchope clinic during open hours. You don’t need to be a patient; anyone in the community is welcome to contribute. If someone can’t make it into the clinic, they can reach out to us and we’ll happily arrange a pick-up. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to get involved and help brighten a child’s Christmas.

Thanks Drs

SUMMER STYLE

Lfocus contributor.

et’s start with the truth: We all take the Insta perfect matching Christmas PJ photo and then those PJs come off faster than your patience on Christmas morning.

So once the elves, stripes and candy cane pyjamas are tossed aside, what do we actually wear for Christmas Day and the long, hot Aussie summer?

Good news: summer trends right now are fun, flattering, inclusive and designed for real women, living real lives (yes, even prawn peeling, backyard cricket, sweating through your bra kind of lives).

Do You Need to Wear Red & Green? Nope. Christmas isn’t about looking like the decorations, it’s about feeling special, especially when you’re seeing people you haven’t caught up with all year. Skip the costume colours and go for:

• Golds • Creams • Sunset oranges

• Florals • Coastal blues • Or everyone’s favourite neutral: leopard Festive is a vibe, not a colour combo.

What’s Trending This Summer Summer 2025 is all about easy, breezy outfits that go from beach barbecue and Christmas

lunch cocktails without a full outfit change. Here’s what’s hot: Big, Bold Florals

Think oversized flowers in orange, yellow, red, coral. Cheerful, summery and flattering on every woman.

Matching Sets

We ditched them on Christmas morning for PJs but they’re back for everything else.

Linen, rayon, oversized shirts + shorts, comfy pant sets: effortless & CHYC.

Oversized Tees - The ultimate comfort piece. Wear over swimmers, denim shorts, skirts, anything you like. Always cool, always in and aren’t going anywhere. This season, it’s all about colour and fun!

Flowy Dresses - A Christmas Day essential. Soft, breathable, swishy and prawn peeling friendly. Always a winner. Always comfortable. Always an easy way to dress up but with minimal effort.

Beach-to-Barbecue Outfits

Comfy shorts, oversized tees, textured swimsuits that can second as a bodysuit, slides and big sunnies. And if you are brave enough, a sun safe hat that also doubles as a trendy accessory. Pull-on, pull-off, look cute, stay cool dressing, without carrying the beach

WHAT WE’RE ACTUALLY WEARING THIS CHRISTMAS

bag full of extra outfits.

Jewellery: lots of layering, beach vibes, initials and layering - lots of layering, they’re all on trend right now and they can take any outfit from casual to smart casual, in a flash.

Just remember, as ladies who live on the coast, make sure you’re leaning towards the sweat proof, water proof and tarnish free pieces. They’ll last through the whole summer season and beyond and you don’t have to take it off to dive into the blue waters of our stunning beaches on Chrissy morning.

Summer style isn’t about sticking to trends, it’s about choosing outfits that make you feel gorgeous, comfortable and ready to enjoy the madness of the season.

Whether you’re in:

• A bright floral

• A breezy linen dress

• An oversized tee

• A relaxed matching set

• Or your second pair of Christmas PJs If you feel good, you’ll look incredible.

A huge Merry Christmas to you all.

Now I’m off to dig out the matching PJs and somehow bribe all my boys to wear them for just one pic!

COMING SOON

It’s only been a couple of weeks since we officially stepped into our new name, Haus of Alma, but I have to say… I’m still a little overwhelmed by how beautifully you have all embraced this change.

After 13 years as Meg + Me, making the decision to reintroduce ourselves was not something I took lightly. Names carry history and familiarity, and I’ll admit, I wondered how it might feel for all of you who have been part of our journey for such a long time.

But as it turns out, you’ve made it feel like we took exactly the right step at exactly the right time.

The messages, the conversations, the excitement, even the curiosity, have all reminded me why we love being part of this town so much. You didn’t just accept the change; you celebrated it with us. You told me it feels “more like us,” that it suits the space and the experience, and that it reflects what and who we’ve grown into. Some of you even told me you’d been waiting for the day the name finally caught up with the brand we had become.

(And yes, a few of you admitted you’d been calling me “Meg” for years and were happy to finally know my name!)

It’s funny how change works. We brace for it, we plan for it… and then, when it finally arrives, we realise it was simply the right moment to step into something that had been quietly forming for a long time. That’s how

this transition has felt for us. Not a departure from where we’ve been, but a clearer expression of who we are and where we’re going.

And now here we are, moving into the festive season - that busy, exciting, slightly chaotic time of year when the whole town seems to shift into a new gear. The days are warmer, the streets are fuller, and the energy is different. You can feel that lovely sense of anticipation building, whether it's for holidays, visitors, or simply the chance to slow down and reconnect with the people who matter most.

One of my favourite things about this time of year is seeing Port Macquarie come alive again with people who return annually, often visiting us as one of their “must-stop” spots. I love hearing what’s changed in their lives, how much the kids have grown, or what new restaurant they’ve discovered since their last trip. There’s something incredibly grounding about being part of people’s traditions - it reminds me that small businesses like ours weave themselves into people’s stories in the most unexpected ways.

It’s also the time of year when the power of shopping local becomes so clear. When you choose to buy from a small business - whether it’s a gift, a new outfit, or simply your morning coffee - you’re supporting real people who

pour their hearts into what they do.

You’re helping keep the magic alive in towns like ours, where community still matters and relationships still mean something. And honestly, that’s one of the biggest reasons our name change felt so important. It wasn’t just about fresh branding or a new logo. It was about aligning our identity with the values we’ve always held close: connection, warmth, intentionality, and the feeling of being part of something a little bigger than yourself. We wanted a name that honoured the community we’ve grown alongside - a name that feels like home, not just to us, but to you as well.

As I sit here reflecting on all of this - the change, the support, the season ahead, I feel so grateful for the people who walk through our doors, year after year, whether they live five minutes away or five hours. You’ve supported us to evolve, to dream a little bigger, and to shape a business that feels authentic to who we are today.

So here’s to this new chapter, to a summer season filled with joy and connection, and to the wonderful community who continue to walk beside us. Thank you for embracing our new name, for cheering us on, and for reminding us every day why we love what we do.

So, when are you coming to our Haus next?!

ESTELLA SONTER

At just 14, Estella Stoner is already making her mark on the national stage, claiming back-to-back titles in the fast-growing sport of Ranch Riding. With talent, grit and an extraordinary bond with her horse Cuba, she’s fast becoming one of the Mid North Coast’s most exciting young equestrians.

Hi Estella. Congratulations on another national title! How does it feel to take out the championship two years in a row at just 14?

I was really excited. The competition standard was higher this year with more people in the classes and higher score cards. It’s an amazing feeling and I’m honestly overwhelmed by it. I’m proud when I think of where I started, the work Cuba and I have put in and where we are now. Winning two years in a row is something I’ll carry with me forever. Can you share a bit about what the competition experience has been like for you?

I love the big shows; the energy, the whole scene, all those incredible horses and riders. It’s like one big cowgirl (and cowboy) family. It was so nice seeing people from all over the country who I met last year and hearing their stories. Everyone is supportive, and watching others grow is so inspiring.

I also love the challenge of competing. It’s the moment where all your training has to come together. It shows you what’s working and what

you need to improve next. This year we had a very well-known American judge, which added an international standard to our sport in Australia and made the win feel even more special. How did your interest in riding begin, and what drew you to ranch riding specifically?

Dad blames one of his mates for putting me on a horse at about two years old. After that, I took every chance I could to ride, mostly pony rides at shows (and a hobby horse in the yard… shhh). I started lessons when I was eight, but after a couple of years I realised English riding wasn’t for me.

Then I met my coach, Lara Coventry-Cox, an Australian Reining Champion. She had a huge influence on me and opened the door to Western and Ranch Riding. After a few years training with her, I met Cuba. Lara bred and trained him. I rode him at training for a couple of months and couldn’t believe it when he became mine on my 12th birthday.. ribbon and all. Since that day we’ve been nonstop training, bonding and loving each other.

You’veprogressedincrediblyquicklyinthesport. What has contributed most to your rapid rise?

I’ve had amazing support from people around me, and I also have the best partner in Cuba. Lara’s knowledge of horses and the sport is world class. She cares about our wellbeing and always knows exactly what we need to progress. She’s my friend, but when work needs to be done, she keeps me on point.

I’m totally devoted to my partnership with Cuba. I want to win, and I do the work. I listen, I practice, and I try hard to put everything together. It can be messy sometimes (I’ve thought about becoming a rodeo bronc rider a few times, lol) but to win we both have to feel confident, comfortable and connected.

What does a typical week of training look like for you, balancing school and riding?

Cuba and I train three afternoons during the week and again on weekends. I’m lucky that his agistment place has an undercover Olympic arena where we do most of our work. It’s a mix of physical and mental training for both of us. Mondays and Fridays are for the more complex exercises and strength work. Wednesdays are lighter, we focus on manoeuvres like spins and side passes.

Lessons with Lara are where we identify what’s next, and then I take that back into our training sessions.

Cuba is deaf, which makes some things harder, but also makes our connection special. He feels more than he hears. He feels emotion, and especially trust. Sometimes I just sit with him and read a book or give him big pamper sessions.

I’ve also learned how important it is to mix things up, so sometimes we trail ride, cut loose in the paddock or just play around in the arena.

I also recently got a personalised gym program and I train at our local gym two or three times a week to improve my strength and mobility for riding.

Ranch riding requires a strong partnership between horse and rider. How would you describe your bond with Cuba?

Cuba is my soul horse. There really isn’t a word that fully describes our bond. When we ride, we become one, it’s the best feeling. Of course we have our ups and downs and confusing exercises, but we always figure them out in our own language.

Cuba is deaf, which makes some things harder, but also makes our connection special.

He feels more than he hears. He feels emotion, and especially trust. Sometimes I just sit with him and read a book or give him big pamper sessions.

One of my favourite things at the moment is liberty riding- riding with no saddle, bridle or reins, basically “look, no hands!”. It’s such a beautiful expression of trust and partnership. (You can see it on my YouTube channel @ EstellaCuba.)

Winning at a national level takes a lot of commitment. What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

My biggest challenge has been nerves. Horses feel everything, so if I’m nervous, we both become one big bundle of nerves. That’s caused rushed patterns and poor technique. It can also create bad habits that are hard to fix. We worked really hard these past 12 months to correct those habits. At this year’s Nationals we were smooth and confident. I still had a few nerves, but I knew we’d done the work. I tell myself, “We’ve got this”.

Your family has supported you every step of the way. What role have they played?

I couldn’t have asked for a better family. Dad is my number one supporter. He comes to almost every lesson and actually watches and learns. He wants to know what I’m working on and how he can help. We travel to shows together and it's a really special time for us. He’s even become president of our local club, the Hastings Performance & Quarter Horse Club. Mum is always there too, watching, helping and supporting even though she knows less about horses than Dad! She gives Cuba reiki, plays sound bowls for him and helps with grooming and filming, and my brother pretends he doesn’t care but still tells me he’s proud.

What are your biggest goals for the next few years?

Next year I move into the Youth category, which means riding one-handed. I’ve started working on it, and it’s harder than I expected, but with practice it’ll become normal. I also want to start working with cattle so I can add some new events to my competitions. Cuba and I will keep training and improving together. I’ve started working Saturday mornings at a café to save for a new saddle, that’s a big goal for next year. Mostly, I just love ranching and I’m excited to keep growing, learning, meeting people and competing.

Thanks Estella.

Whether you’re seeking relief from inflammation, osteoarthritis, recovering from an injury, or managing ongoing pain, our expert-led clinic offers tailored solutions to meet your needs.

Today, she channels that experience into creating a safe, inclusive, and evidence-driven space where people can receive thoughtful, effective, and personalised skin care. Through Bare Balance, Bronwyn and her team are redefining what modern skin health looks like, grounded in science, guided by authenticity, and delivered with warmth. Bronwyn, can you tell us a little about yourself and your background in the skincare and wellness industry? I’m a registered nurse and former midwife with a background in general practice. I’ve been nursing for 15 years and working within medical aesthetics for over seven. My interest in skin health really evolved through patient care, seeing how confidence and wellbeing can improve when people feel comfortable in their own skin. It’s a privilege to combine my clinical background with something that genuinely changes how people

see themselves every day.

BARE BALANCE

SKIN CLINIC INTRODUCING

With over 15 years in nursing and seven in medical aesthetics, Bronwyn brings a rare mix of clinical skill, warmth, and genuine passion for skin health to Bare Balance Skin Clinic. A registered nurse and former midwife, she’s seen firsthand how confidence transforms when people feel at home in their own skin. Now, she’s redefining modern skin health with a safe, evidence-driven, and deeply personal approach that’s as authentic as it is e ective.

What inspired you to start Bare Balance Skin Clinic? Bare Balance Skin Clinic officially opened its own clinic space in July this year, though the journey started long before that. I began working solo, renting a room, and focusing mainly on medical aesthetics. Over time I realised that my patients achieved their best results when their overall skin health became the focus. That led me to expand into a more holistic approach, integrating advanced skin treatments and home care guidance. Opening the clinic was the natural next step - to create a dedicated, comfortable space where people could feel confident and cared for, and to grow a team that shared that vision.

How has your personal journey influenced the philosophy behind your business? My approach has always been grounded in authenticity and evidence. Every treatment we offer has been researched thoroughly to ensure it aligns with best practice

and delivers real, measurable results. I’m also very intentional about creating a space that feels inclusive and welcoming for everyone. Medical aesthetics is often seen as something just for women, but great skin health doesn’t

have a gender. Bare Balance was designed to be an environment where anyone, regardless of their background feels comfortable seeking treatment and investing in their skin. What do you love most about helping people care for their skin? It’s the transformation in how people feel about themselves. When someone sees an improvement in their skin, it often goes beyond the surface - it impacts their confidence and outlook. I also love hearing the stories that come with each patient’s journey. Over time, patients share so much more than their skin goals; they share pieces of their lives, the big moments, good and bad. Being trusted with those stories is something I deeply appreciate. It’s those genuine connections that make my work so meaningful and remind me that what we do goes far beyond the treatment room.

What makes Bare Balance Skin unique compared to other skincare studios or clinics? We take a very individualised approach. There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment here. Everything begins with understanding the patient’s skin, lifestyle, and goals. Our clinic isn’t about “fluff” or quick fixes; it’s about clinically driven, evidence-based treatments that work. The environment itself also reflects that ethos, calm, modern, and intentionally ungendered, using neutral tones like charcoal, sand, and papyrus to create a space that feels approachable and balanced for everyone. Can you tell us about the treatments or techniques you specialise in?

Our focus is on advanced skin health. We offer medical aesthetic treatments and clinical-grade treatments such as peels, microneedling, and Tixel, alongside thorough skin consultations and personalised home care recommendations. While we do provide facials, they’re not your typical “spa” facials. Each one is goaloriented and designed to achieve specific outcomes. Every service has a purpose, whether it’s supporting barrier repair, improving texture, or addressing pigmentation and overall skin vitality.

Can you introduce us to the team that work with you and what they bring to the clinic? I’m joined by my husband Pete, who is also a registered nurse, and Carli, our skin therapist and self-appointed “skin nerd.”

Pete brings an incredible level of precision and calm to the clinic. Our patients often comment on his reassuring and gentle presence. Carli is deeply passionate about education and skin function; she loves helping patients understand the “why” behind their treatment plans.

Together, we share a genuine commitment to safe, ethical practice and meaningful results. What kind of experience can patients expect when they walk through your doors? From the moment someone steps inside, we want them to feel comfortable and understood. Every appointment begins with a genuine conversation. We listen, assess, and design a treatment plan tailored

to the individual. The clinic feels calm and considered, never rushed. Our patients often say they leave feeling confident, knowing they’ve been treated by a professional team who truly care about outcomes as much as experience. The relationships we build are built on trust. Our patients know they can speak openly, and that we’re invested in their journey as much as they are.

How do you stay inspired and continue learning in the ever-evolving world of skincare? The aesthetics field moves quickly, and ongoing education is nonnegotiable for us. I regularly attend professional development courses and industry events, and I stay connected with peers and mentors who share the same evidence-based approach. Our treatments evolve as the science does. That’s part of what keeps me inspired, knowing there’s always something new to learn that can benefit our patients.

How can our readers book an appointment or get in touch with you? Readers can learn more or book online at www.barebalanceskin. com.au, or reach us directly via email at hello@ barebalanceskin.com.au. Whether someone is starting their skin journey or looking to refine it, we’d love to welcome them into the clinic and help them discover what’s possible when balance and science come together.

Dr. Kristy, one of the most common concerns I hear is about large pores. What actually determines pore size? Pore size is largely genetic. If your parents had visible pores, you’re likely to as well. However, several factors make pores appear larger than they are: excess oil production, sun damage, aging, and congestion. When pores become clogged with oil and debris, they stretch and appear more noticeable. Loss of collagen with age also causes skin around pores to sag, making them look larger.

So can we actually shrink pores permanently? Here’s the honest truth, you cannot permanently shrink your pores. Pores don’t have muscles, so they can’t open and close. However, you can absolutely minimise their appearance and prevent them from stretching. The goal is to keep pores clear and maintain skin firmness, which makes them far less noticeable.

What’s the best at-home routine for minimising pore appearance? A consistent routine focused on keeping pores clear and skin firm is essential:

Cleansing: Use a gentle cleanser twice daily. Double cleanse in the evening if you wear sunscreen or makeup.

Exfoliation: Chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid (BHA) are crucial. BHA is oil-soluble and penetrates pores to clear congestion. Use 2-3 times weekly.

Niacinamide: This vitamin B3 regulates oil production and strengthens skin. It’s one of the most effective ingredients for pore appearance.

THE TRUTH ABOUT PORE SIZE: CAN YOU REALLY SHRINK THEM?

Retinol: Increases cell turnover and stimulates collagen, maintaining skin firmness around pores.

SPF 50 daily: Sun damage breaks down collagen, causing pores to appear larger over time.

What professional treatments help with pore appearance? At PMAC, we offer several effective treatments. Microneedling stimulates collagen production, which tightens skin around pores, we see excellent results. Chemical peels deeply exfoliate and refine texture while clearing congestion. IPL can reduce oil production and improve overall texture. Venus Glow provides deep cleansing and gentle resurfacing. For significant concerns, Nanofractional RF improves skin structure and firmness, which refines pore appearance long-term.

We also have doctor-only treatments available that can significantly reduce pore size, rosacea, and facial sweating. These specialised treatments require a consultation with one of our doctors to determine suitability and discuss options tailored to your specific concerns. I’ve heard that steaming opens pores and ice closes them. True? This is a major skincare myth. Pores don’t have muscles, so they cannot open or close. However, steam can soften congestion, making pores easier to cleanse. Ice temporarily constricts blood vessels and tightens skin, making pores look smaller momentarily, but this effect is temporary. Can makeup make pores look worse? Yes, if you’re using the wrong products. Heavy, oil-based foundations can settle into pores and make them more noticeable. Look for

non-comedogenic, lightweight formulas. Never sleep in makeup, it contributes to congestion and stretching of pores.

What’s the biggest mistake people make regarding pores? Over-cleansing and harsh scrubbing. When you strip your skin, it overcompensates by producing more oil, which makes pores more noticeable. Another mistake is expecting instant results, improving pore appearance takes consistent care over weeks and months.

Any final advice for managing pore concerns? Set realistic expectations. You can significantly improve how your pores look, but you can’t change your genetics. Focus on consistent skincare with the right actives, professional treatments when appropriate, and always protect with SPF. If you’re frustrated with your progress, book a consultation at PMAC. We can assess your specific skin type and create a targeted plan for your pores, including discussing whether our doctoronly treatments might be suitable for your concerns.

KEILY NAIL AND BEAUTY EMPORIUM

KEILY Nail and Beauty Emporium is Port Macquarie’s latest nail and beauty salon which is located at Shop 2/110 William Street, Port Macquarie and is not just another “Nail Bar”. It is a place where you can walk through their moon door into a realm of harmony, positive energy, natural beauty, tranquility and experience renewal or rejuvenation while being pampered by their qualified staff who will cater to your nail and beauty needs while you relax and enjoy a barista coffee.

Hi Keith and Ly, tell us about yourselves and how you came to open your own Nail and Beauty Salon. We first met through a friend in Queensland; I had completed my second tour in Iraq and Ly was studying for her Masters in Tourism. I have had a long connection to the Asian culture having worked in Asia, and I started the first Martial Arts (Budokan Karate) classes in Port Macquarie and Wauchope, and was the personal student of Grandmaster Chew Choo Soot. While studying, Ly was working part time in a nail salon but her passion and dream was to open her own salon. We quickly realised that we had a lot in common with the same interests and desires for and within life. We travelled back to Vietnam and I met Ly’s family, who are absolutely beautiful people and Ly and I married a year later.

You have a unique Logo. Tell us what it means. The name KEILY is a combination of Keith’s name and my name Ly i.e. Kei ly. Also in the Asian/Chinese Calendar “Zodiac”, I am a snake and Keith is a dragon. This year is also the Year of the Snake. As we are partners in

life and in business you will note that the tails from the snake and dragon touch and form a heart.

What does the moon door represent?

The moon gate or door is a symbol of beauty, tradition, and spirituality with origins steeped in Chinese/Asian culture. There are some other interpretations, such as symbol of family unity or symbol of birth and renewal or rejuvenation, thanks to its circular shape and moon symbolism. Its graceful, circular design has transcended time and borders, finding relevance in various landscapes around the world.

In spiritual and architectural terms, moon gates or doors represent a passage from the ordinary to the extraordinary. They create a sense of mystery, inviting people to step into another world, whether that be a hidden garden, a courtyard, or a tranquil retreat

We would like to help our clients “get away from the every day”. We therefore invite them to enter and walk through our moon door into a realm of the extraordinary, one of harmony, positive energy and natural beauty and tranquility, a symbol of birth and renewal or rejuvenation.

We want our clients to experience a friendly, professional and relaxing environment while being pampered by our qualified staff who will cater to our client’s nail and beauty needs and relax while enjoying a barista coffee.

What makes KEILY Nail and Beauty Emporium different to other nail salons?

Firstly, the word emporium is used extensively in Asia and it implies that you have a store or large shop that sells or trades in a lot of different amazing things. So we offer our clients a complete nail and beauty experience with high end nail art, (nail design for all occasions) luxury nails such as acrylic, SNS, ombre and beauty gel and beauty services with a deluxe pedicure, manicure, eyelash extension, tint and lift, eyebrow tattoo, lovely lips, waxing, RF skin tightening and teeth whitening just to name a few while they relax with a barista coffee.

Secondly, we offer a warm friendly and relaxing environment. Our clients are welcomed” into our salon and we try to make each client feel special with a personal touch, where they can experience a professional, friendly and relaxing environment while being pampered and “get away from the every day”

We are not a “sausage factory” where clients are rushed in and out.

How long has your salon been open?

I started working in the nail and beauty industry about 10 years ago, both here in NSW and QLD while I was studying for my Masters Degree. Our salon has only been open since 22nd September this year but already people are showing a strong interest in what we have to offer and the feedback we are receiving is tremendous. Our clients really appreciate the “high end service”, professionalism and personal touch and the friendly relaxing environment where they can get away from the every day, the ordinary, and step into a realm of the “extraordinary”.

What is a typical day like in running your Nail and Beauty Emporium? I love what I do and I love my salon. It is bright, clean, open and fresh and my staff and our clients are always happy and a joy to work with. I look after managing the nail and beauty side and my husband looks after the administration side. Basically, I ensure that we are providing a “high end” service and a quality and professional

product and that our clients walk out totally satisfied, happy and relaxed. My husband manages the business side of things and he basically came up with our shop theme and concept, its design and project managed it with the incredible help from Nosworthy Constructions and Rob Gates Real Estate. What more could I ask for?

Tell us what your clients can expect when they enter KEILY Nail and Beauty Emporium. Our clients can expect a warm welcome and totally relaxing and tranquil environment. They can expect an environment where they can leave their worries and stress of the day behind. They can expect to be treated special and have their nail and beauty desires catered for by caring professionals. Our clients can expect to leave totally special, happy, satisfied and relaxed to face the days to come. What plans do you have for the future of KEILY Nail and Beauty Emporium? At the moment we are just settling in and trying to provide our clients with a high quality service and a relaxing environment. In the future we plan to expand our services to our clients,

however, our biggest challenge is securing mature, qualified and professional staff. Once we have secured more staff, I am sure our clients will be delighted with what we have to offer.

How do you maintain a healthy work/ life balance? The shop is demanding. We are open seven (7) days per week but I love what I do, it’s my passion. It is said if you love your job you never have to work again and I get a tremendous sense of achievement and joy when my clients say “WOW” when I finish their nails or eyebrows or eye lashes. It is ever so rewarding when my clients walk out of our shop with a huge smile on their face. However, I am blessed; I am totally supported by my husband, my Mum and my family here in Australia. We all work together everyday supporting and helping each other and this is how it has been in my family for generations. At the moment we are working seven days per week, but I am sure once we are well established my husband I will take a well earned holiday and go back to Vietnam and see my grandparents and family.

Finally, where can people contact you?

STRUGGLING with HIP and LEG PAIN?

Hip and leg pain sometimes called sciatic pain can be scary and frustrating. It can make walking, sitting, getting out of the car, or even sleeping hard to do. The good news is, you don’t have to live with the pain!

What Is Sciatic Pain? Sciatic pain happens when the big nerve that runs from your lower back down your leg becomes irritated or squeezed. The pain often starts in your lower back or buttock and travels through your hip, down your leg, and sometimes into your foot or toes. It might feel like a dull ache, a sharp stab, or even a burning or tingling feeling.

Why Does It Happen? Sciatic pain can start for a few different reasons:

• A bulging or slipped disc in the lower spine

(often at the L5/S1 level)

• Tightness in the piriformis muscle in the hip pressing on the sciatic nerve

• Muscle knots (trigger points) in the lower back or glutes that send pain down the leg

Sometimes more than one cause is involved, especially if you have had the pain for a while. That’s why a thorough assessment is so important before starting treatment.

Simple Tips to Help. Certain movements or positions can make sciatic pain worse. Learning

which ones to avoid can really help the nerve calm down.

Try this: avoid sitting on the lounge with your legs stretched out in front of you. Why? This position pulls on the sciatic nerve and can make the pain worse. At Poke Acupuncture, we help local people with sciatic pain every day. If you’d like to learn more or find out how we can help you feel better, get in touch today!

CKEEPING YOUR BOWEL S AND BLADDER HAPPY THIS CHRISTMAS

hristmas is such a fun and fullon time of year. Our days get busier, our meals get richer, and our usual habits disappear without us even noticing. It is no wonder so many people feel bloated, constipated or find their bladder a little more irritable by the time January rolls around.

The good news is that a few simple tweaks can make the festive season feel a lot more comfortable.

Drink More Water

It is warm, you are on the go and there is always something more tempting to drink than plain water. But hydration plays a huge role in keeping both your bowel and bladder working well.

When you get dehydrated, your urine becomes more concentrated which can irritate the bladder. Your bowel also slows down, or becomes harder to empty.

Try keeping a water bottle nearby and sip regularly. If you are drinking alcohol, using the one-drink then one-glass-of-water habit works wonders.

Keep Fibre in the Mix

December food is delicious, but it is often low

in fibre. Cheese, meats, pastries and desserts are all wonderful holiday staples, but they can also slow things down.

Easy ways to boost fibre without feeling like you are dieting:

• Add fruit to breakfasts and platters

• Choose wholegrain crackers when available

• Add a decent salad to your lunch or dinner

• Keep a gentle fibre supplement on hand if you know constipation hits every December

A little extra fibre goes a long way.

Hold On to One or Two Daily Habits

Your bowel loves routine. It functions best when your mornings and meals stay somewhat predictable. Christmas usually removes that structure completely.

Even keeping one small part of your normal rhythm helps:

• Have your morning coffee and breakfast at roughly the same time

• Give yourself a few calm minutes in the bathroom instead of rushing

• Use a small footstool to support your feet on the toilet to make emptying easier

These little habits signal to the bowel that things are still on track.

Do Not Ignore Toilet Urges

When you are busy, at an event or out shopping, it is easy to delay going to the toilet. Doing this repeatedly makes the bowel harder to empty and can irritate the bladder. If you feel the urge for a bowel motion, try to go when it presents. It is always easiest when the body is naturally ready.

Know Your Bladder Irritants

Some seasonal favourites can make the bladder a bit moody. Alcohol, coffee, soft drinks, fizzy mixers, citrus and artificial sweeteners are the big triggers.

You do not have to avoid anything, but spacing them out and adding more water in between can help reduce urgency, frequency or general irritation.

Move Every Day

Even small amounts of movement help digestion. A short walk, playing with the kids on the beach, a swim or anything that gets you moving gently can stimulate the bowel and settle the digestive system.

This Christmas, enjoy the food, the drinks, the sunshine and the family time. With a few simple habits, your bowels and bladder can stay calm, comfortable and happy all season long.

Wishing You All A Very Safe and Enjoyable December, Christmas and Holiday Season. This month can be a really wonderful and enjoyable time for connecting with loved ones, creating happy memories and having time off to rest and recharge.

December can also be a very busy time for many, with added commitments or even over-committing.

The to-do-list may lengthen with the end of year extra demands for school, study and work, as well as gift shopping, holiday planning, family and social catch-ups, and visitors popping in or coming to stay. There can also be extra traffic on the roads, challenges with finding a parking space, hot and humid weather and for some heightened emotions which can all contribute to feelings of overwhelm, stress, and exhaustion. It might feel as if you are juggling too many balls in the air.

Here are 10 Ways to Help Maintain Calm through December and over the Festive Season.

1 Simplify Your Schedule - avoid overcommitting.

2 Prioritise Self-Care - have some ‘timeout’ for play, rest and recharge.

5 Take Rest Breaks - even 5 minutes. Take a nap, take a walk, go smell the roses, dig in the garden, watch the waves, watch the clouds, pat the dog, or do some gentle stretching.

6 Get Organised and Plan Ahead - make a list and prioritise.

7 It’s Ok to say, ‘No’ - Assert boundaries with kindness and compassion.

SAFE HAVEN

With the opening of its new purpose-built space, The Safe Haven Port Macquarie offers a warm, non-clinical refuge for anyone experiencing mental distress. More than just a building, it’s a place of compassion, connection, and hope; where lived-experience peer workers provide genuine support to help people feel seen, heard, and safe.

Congratulations on the opening of the new Safe Haven building in Port Macquarie. Can you tell us about the vision behind this purpose-built space and what makes it unique?

It was very important for the Safe Haven to be accessible and welcoming. This means that it needed to be a standalone non-clinical environment, close to town and have both inside and outside spaces.

It is unique because it was formed by people who have experienced suicidal thoughts. The Lived Experience Advisory Group told us they wanted a genuine alternative to going to the Emergency Department, and it needed to be welcoming and safe for people of all ages. For readers who may not be familiar, what is Safe Haven and how does it support people experiencing mental distress?

The Safe Haven is where you can go to get support if you are experiencing distress or suicidal thoughts. It is a non-clinical service run by peer workers with lived experience of suicidal thoughts themselves who provide peer support or sometimes just a safe space.

For some people this means they may just need to come somewhere to talk or cry,

others use the sensory room which has blankets, dark glasses, a massage chair and music. Some people prefer doing some mindfulness activities, sitting in the garden or having a cuppa while talking through what they are going through with someone who understands.

The service is funded by the NSW Government as a Towards Zero Suicides Initiative, and the building was partially funded by NSW Health Infrastructure, so we are very grateful for funding to support this initiative for the people of Port Macquarie.

The opening event brought together staff, peer workers, and community leaders, how significant was this moment for everyone involved? It was wonderful to have the community and other services at the event. The support for the new building has been fantastic, and everyone has provided positive feedback from young people to older people, men, women

and the LGBTIQA+ community.

This service needs to be trusted by the community as a safe space that people can come to. Support from businesses, nongovernment organisations, emergency services, and community leaders are the key to creating and maintaining trust.

Safe Haven has been described as “much more than a building.” What does that mean to you and the Safe Haven team?

The Safe Haven is built entirely on human connection, through creating an understanding of what someone is going through and connecting them to other services as they need them.

All health and wellbeing services should be grounded in human connection.

As a non-clinical service, the Safe Haven is built entirely on human connection, through creating an understanding of what someone is going through and connecting them to other services as they need them.

We all experience ups and downs in life and sharing that with another person brings hope that we can get through these times together. When people are experiencing suicidal thoughts or are thinking of harming

themselves, this is almost always a natural reaction to stressors in their lives. The environment needs to be able to feel safe for the person to open up and share what they are going through, but it is the staff that really creates that connection.

It is beautiful and is a real connection between the Safe Haven and people who have experienced suicidal crisis or distress and are now able to give back through creating art.

Peer support seems to be at the heart of what you do. How do lived-experience workers make a difference in the kind of care Safe Haven provides?

Peer support is about sitting with someone and sharing distress. Sometimes that is all people need. Other times if someone is experiencing a relationship breakdown, financial issues or where pain or mental illness is driving the suicidal thoughts, people might need other services but don’t know where to turn. The peer workers know the available services in Port Macquarie, and if they don’t, they will find out.

The Safe Haven is about creating a space which isn’t intimidating to be able to walk in and just be you. The peer workers have heard all the saddest and hardest stories from people, and some of those stories are their experiences too. Sometimes there are things you can’t share with a friend or family member, things that you might

feel embarrassed or ashamed about, things that you don’t want to share with them. The Safe Haven team is ready to listen. What kind of partnerships or community connections have been vital in bringing this project to life?

We thank the Endeavour Clubhouse members who created the art in the building as part of their Art Therapy group this year. It is beautiful and is a real connection between the Safe Haven and people who have experienced suicidal crisis or distress and are now able to give back through creating art.

We also acknowledge Lifeline Mid Coast as a key partner in establishing the service and ensuring it meets the needs of the community. How do you hope this new space will impact the broader Port Macquarie community in terms of mental health awareness and support?

We want people to know that having suicidal thoughts is okay, and we are here to share in the distress and support people to understand these thoughts and work through them. We would like everyone to know that there is hope, even when it feels hopeless. Looking ahead, what are the goals for

Safe Haven, both for the facility itself and for the role it plays in shaping compassionate mental health care in regional NSW?

For the building we will keep working on the outside spaces. Outside space is important and can be therapeutic and less traumatic for people in distress to access when they’re feeling overwhelmed. We are lucky in Port Macquarie to have weather that allows us to be outside most of the year, so we hope to create some more outside covered spaces. We would like more men to be reaching out for support. We would like anyone working in trades and emergency services to pop past the Safe Haven after work to share that things are tough. We would like older men who are feeling lonely to call past for a cup of tea to talk about how to reconnect with things they love. We want to see young people bringing a friend in after school to see the peer workers if they are struggling or women who are struggling with parenting, feeling alone or isolated.

We would like people experiencing substance use issues, relationship breakdowns, family and domestic violence and financial problems that might be leading to suicidal thoughts, to come in and get some support. We will work with you to get to the other side where things can be better again.

Thanks Sarah.

LYN HANNA

HLyn Hanna has long been a familiar face on Mid North Coast courts, but this year she took her game to an entirely new level; representing Australia at the World Tennis Masters Tour Championships in Croatia. Fresh from competing on the red clay of Bol and bringing home international results, she sat down with us to share the journey behind her biggest sporting adventure yet.

i Lyn. You’ve been a longtime member of both the Lake Cathie and Westport Macquarie Tennis Clubs, what first inspired you to pursue Masters tennis at an international level?

When I played at the Forster Tennis Club Tournament in a singles event one of the players said I should think about playing in Croatia the following year. I asked what was involved and she explained the procedure. Thank you Leonie Ainsworth from Canberra for suggesting that I should nominate.

What did you need to do to qualify for the World Tennis Masters Tour Championships?

What was that preparation period like for you physically and mentally?

To nominate for the ITF World Masters Tour Team Championships you had to compete

in 3 x 700 point ITF Tournaments. I played at Rockdale NSW ITF State Championship, ITF Victorian Grass Court Yarrawonga, and ITF Gold Coast Queensland Championships. The most challenging tournament I played was at Yarrawonga (November 2024) singles. It was 49.9C on court and the following day I played in rain. Not having played on grass for years was a challenge both physically and mentally in these different conditions.

This year’s championships were held on the red clay courts of Bol, on Brac Island in Croatia. What was your first impression of the venue and atmosphere when you arrived?

We arrived at Bol 3 days prior to the commencement of the teams event. Our captain had arranged for us to practice at the venue and we were given 90 minutes each day. When we first arrived at the island there was

a gale force wind warning so practice was not pleasant. We were covered in red dust and by the third day there wasn’t any surface left on the court. We were totally surprised to see that the whole complex had been restored when we turned up for our 1st match. The courts had been top dressed and hosed down and they looked amazing. The Zlatni Rat Tennis Complex is set in quite a hilly location where the courts are on many different levels surrounded by large, old mostly pine and olive trees. All the ceremonies were held in the main arena. The Bluesun Hotel where the majority of players stayed was only a few minutes walk from the courts.

Can you share a bit about the games you played and how you went in Croatia?

The teams (75 years Queen’s Cup) were divided into 3 groups. Australia played Sweden, Canada and France (round robin format). We

won all three matches and never lost a set. I played against Sweden in the doubles with Judith Rodins (Qld). Each match consists of 2 x singles and 1 x doubles. We then had to play a Round Robin with the 2 other group winners USA and Finland. We lost 2 x 1 against the USA and won all 3 matches against Finland. USA – GOLD; Australia - SILVER; Finland –BRONZE medals. In the individual events I played singles, womens doubles and mixed doubles. I lost my 1st round singles and then nominated to play in the bonus singles (if you lose your 1st round you can nominate to play bonus singles). I won all my matches easily and then played in the final for gold against Heidi Richardson (Switzerland). 1 set all and lost in a tie breaker (10 x 6) - no medal for runner up. Womens doubles I played with Mary King from 85 Womens Team and we lost in the tie break 1st round. Mixed doubles I played with Herbert Chee (NSW) Team Manager, winning all matches up to semi finals. We won the BRONZE medal. Lost to 1st seed USA in the semi-finals.

The whole experience I will always remember and treasure. The entire Australian teams contingent were all very friendly and were great supporters. We brought home 22 medals.

Competing internationally can be expensive. How important was the support you received from your local clubs and sponsors in helping you make this trip?

Competing internationally is expensive and Tennis Australia, Tennis Seniors Australia and Tennis Seniors NSW all contributed towards uniforms, travel Insurance plus monetary support. Lake Cathie Tennis Club and Westport Macquarie Tennis Club also gave monetary support which I appreciated. Intersport Port Macquarie also supported me with sweat bands etc.

You’ve now played against competitors from all over the world. What did you learn, from their playing styles, resilience, or approach to the game?

Competing against players from other countries in the world was a massive experience for me. I had never met or played against anyone other than local and interstate players so it was a huge learning curve. Even just hitting up before you start a game was different. We started off easy volley at net and gradually worked our way to the base line and then doing all the usual hit up. The whole experience I will always remember and treasure. The entire Australian teams contingent were all very friendly and were great supporters. We brought home 22 medals. Looking back on your time in Croatia, what was your favourite moment or memory from the trip?

I was lucky enough to travel with our Team Captain (Helen Worland) NSW and her sister which made travelling easier. Our team was very friendly so we socialised a lot, eating meals together and doing a few touristy things when we could. Bol is not a very big town, lovely shops and restaurants, monasteries, chapels etc. cater well for tourists. Some of us went on a cruise to the Island of Hvar for the day, which is a similar island to Brac and there is a lot of

history on both islands. My best moment of the trip was the presentation of both medals and I was delighted that a friend and her husband came for 3 days to watch me play from France (they also call Port Macquarie home for part of the year). It was a great honour to have worn the green and gold and represent my country, although I was very overwhelmed by the experience.

You’ve proven that age is no barrier to competing at an elite level. What advice would you give to other senior players thinking about stepping up to Masters tennis?

To all those who would like to compete at an international level then its not really that hard, if I can do it so can you. It's all a bit scary to start with but tennis is such a social sport, you meet lots of wonderful people and you get to play at some lovely tennis centres in Australia. After such a huge achievement, what’s next for you on the court? Are you already thinking about the 2026 Masters Tour?

I plan on competing again next year and hope to be able to nominate for the Doris Hart Cup 80 years in Crete. My plan is to play Australian Masters ITF Gold Coast Miami, Vic Oceanic, Qld State Championship Miami Gold Coast. Thanks Lyn.

BA LIFE IN FULL FLIGHT

Ken Hazelwood was born in 1948, a country boy from the picturesque rural town of Gloucester, north of Newcastle, southwest of Taree.

ack then, Gloucester was a timber-and-dairy town of just a few thousand people, a place where neighbours knew one another and children roamed the paddocks until dusk. Life wasn’t always easy: Ken’s father passed away when he was just five, leaving him, his brother, and their mother to carry on. But Ken remembers one thing clearly, his mother devoted her life to his sister, brother and himself, always ensuring they went to bed with a full tummy and went to school in clean clothes.

Ken left school at fourteen and began an apprenticeship with the Garden Island Naval Dockyard in Sydney, working as a civilian for the Australian Navy. Diesel engines became his world, and he spent five years learning to maintain the machinery that powered warships, submarines, aircraft carriers and patrol boats. He lived in a boarding house in Ashfield, quiet and determined, an observer of the world but ready to leap when life opened a door.

Life did then open the biggest door of all through the Sydney Legacy flying scholarship. Ken still remembers sitting for his interview with Sir Hudson Fysh, founder of QANTAS. Two days later, at only eighteen, he received a letter instructing him to report to the Chief Flying Instructor at Bankstown. It was January 1966 when Ken first took to the sky. By June he held a private pilot’s licence, and he kept going. He joined the CMF (now the Army Reserve), earned his commercial pilot’s licence in 1968, and an agricultural pilot’s rating in 1969.

rewarding. In 1970 he flew for ‘Airspreaders’ based in Taree, covering the Hunter Valley and all the way up to Taylors Arm near Macksville. The rural airstrips, the earthy smell of farmland, and the challenge of low-level flying became part of who he was.

Life with Eileen was full of love and adventure.

Together they travelled around Australia and across Europe, making memories that today remain some of Ken’s most cherished.

Ken spent the next decade flying over the wide, open landscapes of regional NSW, fertilising pastures, seeding crops, bringing life to the rural communities he understood so deeply. The work was hard, skilful and

In 1972, Ken married Eileen, a compassionate, dedicated registered nurse. Life with Eileen was full of love and adventure. Together they travelled around Australia and across Europe, making memories that today remain some of Ken’s most cherished. They raised three children, Nigel, Michael and Sarah.

Life was rich and full. But in 1981, a change of government removed the tax benefits for fertiliser, reshaping the agricultural aviation industry. Ken adapted, he always had. He

earned a multiinstrument rating, flew in all weather, supported FIFO workers to oil rigs, and even travelled to Italy to help fight fires from the sky. Eventually, the lure of bigger and better aircraft drew him to Moree, where he spent the final twenty years of his flying career.

Two

years

later, he retired from flying, a long and extraordinary career for a rural country boy who once looked up at the sky and wondered what it might be like to sit among the clouds.

In the mid-1990s, Ken began losing strength in his fingers. The diagnosis came in 2001: Inclusion Body Myositis, a rare and progressive condition. Two years later, he retired from flying, a long and extraordinary career for a rural country boy who once looked up at the sky and wondered what it might be like to sit among the clouds.

Eileen passed away from bowel cancer eleven years ago, a loss that still sits tenderly in Ken’s heart. Yet he continued living independently until early 2025, supported by home care and his own quiet resilience.

Finding Home at Lake Cathie Manor

Ken moved into Lake Cathie Manor Aged Care Home in early February 2025, after a fall at home. He’d always said he would rather die than go into care, but when he arrived at Lake Cathie Manor, he surprised even himself.

He walked in, took one look around, and thought: “Wow.”

The new purposebuilt facility, with its spacious rooms, ensuite bathrooms, landscaped gardens, cinema, and on-site café, felt warm and inviting, nothing like the aged care homes he had imagined. But it was the people who truly made the difference.

Ken loves the multicultural staff, especially those from the Kiribati community. Their warmth and gentleness touched him deeply. He often reflects on the sacrifices they make to work in Australia and wishes the government did more to support them. He loves chatting with staff from all backgrounds, hearing about their lives and sharing stories from his own incredible journey.

His room is often filled with the soft hum of his desktop computer. Ken’s flight simulator remains one of his greatest joys. Not long ago, he “flew” to Kiribati, and, noticing the delighted staff member from that island nation, he took her on a virtual flight around her homeland. It was a small gesture, but one that reminded everyone of Ken’s generous spirit, and his enduring love of the skies. Ken says he didn’t want to be in Port

Macquarie, so he chose Lake Cathie Manor deliberately. Of the facilities he considered, this one felt right. It felt like home, and has now been part of the Hall & Prior Health & Aged Care Group since 01 October 2025. Lake Cathie Manor enjoys the support of a larger aged care network with a stellar reputation for personalised care and compassion.

A Life Well Lived

When you ask Ken about his life, he’ll often shrug humbly and say:

“Not bad for a rural country boy. A true Australian.”

But the truth is this:

He lived a life of courage, curiosity, and service.

He flew across Australia, across continents, and across the lives of countless people.

He loved deeply, his wife, his family, his work, and his country.

Now, at Lake Cathie Manor, he enjoys each day surrounded by kindness, conversation, and the gentle hum of engines on a screen, reminders of the sky that carried him through life.

Ken Hazelwood’s story isn’t just a life story. It’s a tribute to resilience, adventure, love, and the simple joy of finding a place where you can finally land, and feel at peace.

Can you tell us a little about your role at Dovida and what first drew you to working in home care?

I’m a care advisor with Dovida, which means I support and advocate for older people and their families to understand their care options, navigate the Aged Care system, and put the right supports in place so they can continue living safely and comfortably at home. A big

RILEY BUGDEN DOVIDA

As a care advisor with Dovida, Riley Bugden plays a key role in helping older people remain safe, supported, and independent in the place they love most - home. Riley shares what person-centred care looks like in practice, the relationships that inspire him, and why Dovida’s local, connected approach makes such a di erence on the Mid North Coast.

part of my role is really listening and getting to know someone’s story, their goals, and what matters most to them.

I was first drawn to aged care because I love the idea of helping people stay in the place where they feel the most comfortable - home. I’ve always been passionate about supporting people to keep their independence and dignity, and home care gives me the chance to make a meaningful difference in someone’s everyday life.

Dovida is known for its person-centred approach. What does that look like in your day-to-day work?

For me, person-centred care means starting with the person, not the service. Every day, I look at how we can shape support around someone’s routines, preferences, and goals. That might mean adjusting visit times to suit when they feel their best, matching them with the right caregiver or checking in regularly to make sure we’re responding to any changes. It’s also about involving people in their own care decisions. Clients and families know themselves best, so I see my role as working alongside them, not telling them what they need.

What do you love most about being welcomed into people’s homes and lives?

It’s a real privilege. When someone invites you into their home, you see their world, their dayto-day, their routines and the things that bring them comfort. I love the trust that comes with

that and the genuine relationships that form over time.

Being in someone’s home also gives you a deeper understanding of what they need to stay safe and confident. You get to tailor support in a much more meaningful way because you're seeing their life as it really is. Every client’s needs are different. How do you and your team tailor your support?

We start by getting to know each person as an individual and their health needs, but also their habits, interests, personality, and what independence looks like for them. From there, we build a plan customised to them.

We’re also very flexible. Needs change, and we adjust quickly, whether that’s increasing support, introducing new services, or simply shifting things around to help someone feel more comfortable. Matching the right caregiver is a big part of this too; when the personalities click, everything just works! Dovida talks about creating a “Circle of Care.” What does that mean to you?

To me, the Circle of Care is about connection. It means everyone involved in a person’s wellbeing such as family, care staff, nurses, GPs, allied health who are all communicating and working together with the client at the centre.

As a care advisor, I’m often the link between all of these people. I help coordinate, share information, and make sure everyone is moving in the same direction. When the circle is strong, clients feel supported from all sides, and that leads to better outcomes.

Many of our clients have lived here for decades, so they have deep roots and strong connections. We respect that, and try to support them in a way that feels familiar and local.

How does living and working on the Mid North Coast influence your approach to care?

The Mid North Coast has such a strong sense of community. People look out for each other, and that really shapes the way we work. Many of our clients have lived here for decades, so they have deep roots and strong connections. We respect that, and try to support them in a way that feels familiar and local. We also understand the unique needs of the region, from rural areas to tight-knit neighbourhoods. Being local means we can respond quickly, build long-term relationships, and offer care that truly fits the community. What would you like people considering home care to understand about Dovida?

I’d like people to know that Dovida is

local; it isn’t just about providing services, we’re about supporting people’s whole wellbeing. We focus on dignity, independence, and genuine connection. Our goal is to make life easier, safer, and more enjoyable in a way that feels personal and respectful.

We walk alongside people. We take the time to listen, to understand, and to build care that fits their life.

What keeps you passionate about this work?

The people. Every day I’m inspired by the relationships I build, the trust families place in me and the team, and the difference even small changes can make in someone’s life. Helping someone stay independent and seeing their confidence grow, never stops feeling meaningful.

I’m also motivated by the team at Dovida. We care deeply about each other and what we do, and that sense of purpose keeps me passionate and proud to be part of this team.

Thanks Riley.

WHY BUY A SUZUKI MARINE OUTBOARD?

Offering a compelling combination of performance, innovation, and proven reliability makes them a top choice for boating enthusiasts across Australia. Whether you're fishing offshore, cruising along the coast, or heading out for a day on the estuary with family, there is a Suzuki marine outboard to match your needs.

Fuel Efficiency - Suzuki’s Lean Burn Control System predicts fuel needs based on operating conditions, allowing the engine to run on a leaner, more efficient air-fuel ratio. This system delivers significant improvements in fuel economy across a wide operating range, from low-speed operation to cruising.

Reliability and Warranty - Suzuki outboards have built a strong reputation for long-term durability. Every new Suzuki outboard comes with a 3-year unlimited hours manufacturer’s warranty. For even greater peace of mind, owners can extend this to a 6-year warranty when the engine is serviced by an authorized Suzuki Marine dealership at 12-month intervals. Adding an extra 3 yrs of warranty shows Suzuki’s confidence in the reliability of their outboards.

Lightweight and Compact Design - Lightweight outboards help reduce overall boat weight while improving handling and fuel

economy. Suzuki’s outboards are engineered to be both light and compact, enhancing fuel efficiency and overall boat weight balancing. This design ensures easier handling that contributes to better overall boat performance.

Quiet Operation - Known for their exceptionally quiet operation, Suzuki outboards incorporate advanced Japanese engineering to minimise the engine noise. A lot of our Suzuki Marine customers often comment on how they don’t realise the engine is on because it’s that quiet!

Advanced Technology

Integration - Suzuki integrates cutting-edge technology into their outboards. For instance, models from the 115hp upwards can incorporate drive-by-wire technology, offering smooth shifting and instant throttle response. This technology also simplifies rigging and provides superior throttle control.

Whether for fishing, leisure, or commercial use, Suzuki offers a range of outboards to suit various boating needs. Their outboards are designed to perform reliably in diverse conditions, making them a versatile choice for Australian waters.

Owning a Suzuki Marine Outboard isn’t just an outboard, it’s an investment for boaters seeking optimal performance on the water.

DREW MIANTE

2025 NATIONAL APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR

Drew Miante has just been named the 2025 National Apprentice of the Year at the Bus Industry Confederation Conference, a remarkable achievement for the Port Macquarie local. We caught up with her to talk about the journey behind the award, the community that’s supported her, and the passion that’s driving her forward in the transport industry.

Hi Drew. Congratulations! How did it feel to hear your name announced as 2025 Apprentice of the Year at the Bus Industry Confederation (BIC) Conference in Perth?

It was honestly surreal. It’s not something I expected to happen; to be recognised on a national stage was an incredible honour. The whole experience has led me to reflect on how far I've come, all the things I've learnt, and the challenges I’ve overcome.

I wouldn’t have been able to get to where I am today if it weren’t for the people who have helped lift me up. My mentors, workmates, friends, and family have all played a part in shaping the person I am and the professional I'm becoming. This recognition belongs to all of them too.

Can you tell us a bit about how you came to be nominated and what the whole experience has been like for you?

I was originally nominated for the BusNSW State Awards by my workplace Busways, which was an unexpected honour. I am grateful to my entire team for supporting me and believing in my potential from day one.

At the 2025 BusNSW Industry Awards, I received BusNSW Apprentice of the Year; I then progressed through to the next stage as a nominee for the National Bus Industry Confederation Awards. Attending the Nationals in Perth was both nerve-racking and incredibly motivating and confidence-inspiring. It was there that I was awarded the 2025 National Apprentice of the Year Award. I am proud to be representing not only my workplace and the industry, but also women in the trade. I genuinely appreciate the industry for recognising young Australians who are passionate about making a difference in their fields.

What first sparked your interest in working in the transport industry, and how did you find your way into an apprenticeship with Busways?

I’ve always been very hands-on. I enjoy solving mechanical problems, working on my own cars in my spare time, and I had also completed a Certificate I in Light Vehicle Servicing. When a family member mentioned that there was an opportunity to apply for a Heavy Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship with Busways, I thought, “Why not give it a go?" I had no mechanical background - just curiosity, determination, and a willingness to learn. Three years later, I'm proud to say I've found a career that challenges me, motivates me, and gives me purpose.

Many people don't realise how much work goes into keeping buses safe and reliable. Can you walk us through what a typical day looks like for you?

A typical day starts with checking what jobs need to be done for that day. This can include routine servicing/maintenance, diagnosing faults, and the potential breakdown. One day might be straightforward, and the next you might be dealing with a fault that takes hours to track down. Some days we’re really busy,

especially when multiple buses need mechanical attention all at once. Other days we can take more time to dig into more complex problems. It keeps things interesting; no two days are the same.

There is always something new to learn or a different challenge to solve.

Everyone is always willing to help each other out, and that makes it a great environment to learn in. My team honestly feels like family now, and that is one of the best parts of the job. It makes coming to work not feel like work.

What part of the job gives you the most satisfaction? Is there a particular skill or area of work that you have really grown passionate about during your apprenticeship?

I get the most satisfaction from successfully diagnosing a tricky issue and seeing the bus leave the workshop running again. It’s a great feeling knowing that the work we’ve done directly contributes to the safety and reliability of the public transport our community relies on every day. I’ve also found myself developing my skills in the electrical and air conditioning

side of things as I progress through my apprenticeship. The more I learn, the more I want to keep learning. It’s a good feeling to see your skills grow and know you’re making a difference.

You work out of the Port Macquarie depot, what is special about being part of that team and serving this region?

I grew up in Port Macquarie and used to be one of the kids catching the buses I now service, so there is something rewarding about giving back to my community and having that full circle moment. Our depot has a supportive, close-knit team. Everyone is always willing to help each other out, and that makes it a great environment to learn in. My team honestly feels like family now, and that is one of the best parts of the job. It makes coming to work not feel like work.

Being recognised at a national level is a

huge milestone. How has this achievement shaped your goals for the future?

It's shown me that I'm on the right path and that I really do have the potential for a long and successful career in the industry. This recognition has motivated me to keep pushing myself, take on more responsibility, and maybe eventually move into more advanced technical roles. It’s made me feel more confident in my abilities and more excited about what’s ahead.

I will continue improving and learning; it’s exciting to see how far I can go.

What are you most excited to learn or take on next in your career?

I am excited to keep developing my skills and knowledge as I progress further in the heavy diesel industry. I want to assist and mentor others entering the industry. As I progress, I hope my experiences can inspire more young people, especially women, to consider a future in the trades, to back themselves, and to recognise that this industry truly has a place for them. I want to help create a pathway that feels welcoming, achievable, and empowering for the next generation.

Thanks Drew.

EDUCATION UPDATE

GENERAL

e Power of Performing Arts in School Life

In a world where academic pressure and digital distraction often dominate, the performing arts offer something unique for students: the opportunity to move, speak, sing and create together. At its heart, performing arts education in Catholic schools supports a well-rounded approach, where students from all backgrounds can experience and shape not only their academic journey, but their personal growth as well.

Enhancing engagement, motivation and school belonging

Research by the University of Sydney and the Australian Council for the Arts shows a clear links between student’s participation in the arts and their school engagement, motivation and sense of belonging. A recent study found that those involved in the arts had higher homework-completion rates, greater class participation, stronger educational aspirations and improved self-esteem and life satisfaction. Developing cognitive, creative and collaborative capacities

Performing arts can also strengthen a child’s ability to think creatively, solve problems, communicate clearly and work in a team. Research from the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP), shows that students involved in the arts demonstrate higher levels of resilience, class participation and educational aspiration.

In drama, children explore characters, situations and emotions. In music and dance, they learn to coordinate, listen and express themselves. These activities promote critical thinking and collaboration, skills that are valuable in every subject and in life. For primary-aged students, the impact is more profound, supporting the development of identity, agency and confidence.

Supporting social-emotional wellbeing and inclusion

Performing arts provides safe opportunities for self-expression, empathy and emotional development. Students learn to take creative risks, support each other and share their perspectives in constructive ways. The ATYP study found that students who engage in performing arts feel happier, more connected and better able to manage stress and anxiety. Importantly, performing arts education can be a strong equaliser. Research shows that it benefits all students, but particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, including children from regional and Indigenous communities. For Catholic schools in regional areas like Port Macquarie and the Hastings region, this reinforces the importance of making arts opportunities accessible to every student, regardless of background or ability.

Extending into secondary school: building pathways for confidence and careers

In our Catholic secondary schools, students have opportunities to specialise in areas such as drama, music, dance or production, deepening both skill and self-awareness. We offer strong creative and performing arts programs, both as part of the curriculum and co-curriculum. These range from HSC subjects to large-scale musical productions and extracurricular ensembles.

A spotlight on local creativity and collaboration

This commitment was on full display at the St Agnes' Parish Catholic Schools SPARK Creative Arts Showcase, held at the Glasshouse on 20 November. Students partnered with local performing arts stars Tim and Stephanie Maddren of Gotcha Back Productions. Events like SPARK form part of our St Agnes' Catholic Parish Schools Arts Nest program, not only highlighting student talent, but providing industry-level experience and building lasting confidence.

The development of our Arts Nest program embodies our commitment to holistic education. Students benefit from workshops, exhibitions and performances that foster both artistic development and personal growth. The performing and creative arts are far more than an extra activity. They enhance our creative curriculum, community engagement, personal growth and confidence and teach collaboration and encourage creativity. performing arts help students thrive in the classroom and in life.

CKeep the cheer, cut the costs! A smart Christmas for Homeowners.

hristmas has a way of sneaking up on us. One minute we’re enjoying those first warm afternoons, and the next we’re knee-deep in school concerts, gift lists, and the annual debate about who’s hosting Christmas. For many it’s a joyful time, but it can also be the most expensive time of the year.

If you’re juggling a mortgage, the festive season can easily pull your financial plans off track. However, with a bit of planning and a few smart habits, you can enjoy it without sacrificing your long-term goals, because let’s face it - Santa’s not paying your mortgage.

Start

With a Seasonal Spending Plan

Most households underestimate their Christmas spending. It’s not just gifts, it’s food, travel, school holiday activities, end-of-year catch-ups, and the rising cost of summer living. Before the silly season hits full speed, set a realistic budget for Dec/Jan.

It should include buffers for things we often forget: the electricity bill from running the aircon, the “just one more gift” moments, or the multiple trips to the grocery store for missing ingredients.

A clear spending limit gives you confidence to enjoy yourself without worrying about the mortgage looming in the background.

Don’t Let Christmas Dip Into Your Offset

Your offset or redraw isn’t Santa’s sack, it’s the engine room that keeps your interest costs down. It can be tempting to pull a little extra from savings to “get through Christmas,” but remember: every dollar you withdraw is a dollar you’re paying interest on again.

If you’re hosting a big gathering or buying gifts for a large family, keep spending within your normal cash flow wherever possible. Your future self will thank you in January.

Choose Experiences Over Expensive Gifts

Port Macquarie is spoiled for choice when it comes to low-cost activities. A beach day, a picnic at Town Beach, a walk along the Coastal Track, or a sunset BBQ at Oxley Beach can be just as meaningful as anything wrapped under the tree.

If you’re feeling the pressure of buying for everyone, try setting a family Secret Santa, set gift budgets, or “experience-only” agreements. They save money, and often make Christmas more enjoyable.

Be Conscious with Credit and Buy Now Pay Later

Credit cards and BNPL platforms can be useful tools, until they aren’t. Christmas is one of the biggest months for people falling into repayment traps they didn’t expect. If you use these services, map out exactly when repayments are due and make sure they fit your January budget.

Take Advantage of Sales, But With a Plan

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Boxing Day sales can stretch your Christmas dollar further, but only if you shop with purpose. Before you open your shopping apps or head to Port Central or Settlement City, write a list and stick to it. A bargain only saves you money if you were planning to buy it anyway.

Prepare for the Summer

Break

Between childcare, day trips, and feeding hungry kids who seem to eat double during school holidays, January can quietly become one of the most expensive months of the year. Plan early. Map out low-cost activities and set a weekly budget. Free local options, like the local pool, parks, bike rides, and markets, can keep costs down without sacrificing fun.

Give Your Finances a Quick Health Check

While the year winds down, it’s the perfect time to take a step back and assess where your mortgage sits. Are you on the right rate? Do you have an adequate buffer in your offset? Are you making the most of repayment strategies that suit your goals? Christmas should bring connection, not financial stress. When you stay intentional about your spending and protect the progress you’ve made on your mortgage, you give yourself the best gift of all, peace of mind.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas. See you back here in 2026!

MERRY CHRISTMAS

from all of us at Priest Legal

We are almost there!

Christmas will soon be upon us! For many professions and businesses, the Christmas period is a time where the doors are temporarily closed for a week or two for some much-needed rest and recuperation and family time.

For many businesses though, particularly in the retail sector, the Christmas Holiday period is their busiest time of the year. With the influx of holiday makers flocking to our beautiful region – it is their time to shine. Extra staff, longer hours, stocking up for the masses, and ... a little extra patience.

The Christmas period for most of us is a happy and positive time of the year. A time when families and friends catch up, eat too much, and exchange a few presents, hopefully many laughs and create long lasting memories. If this is you, be thankful for what you have. Let’s also not forget those in our community who might not be so lucky. Check in on your neighbour, help others, donate food or items or your time to one of our wonderful local charities if you can. A little act of kindness will likely have a greater impact on those less

fortunate than you could have ever imagined. From all of us here at Priest Legal, be kind to each other and have safe and happy Christmas and New Year period.

PS Hasta la vista – message from Emilie I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone whose journey I have had the privilege to share in my working life as a lawyer with Priest Legal over the last 25 years. It has been an extraordinary experience but above all it has been an enormous privilege. I have learned as much from you, our clients, as hopefully, I have been able to assist you with to resolve your issues or achieve better outcomes. Some of the lessons that I have learned from you are: Don’t say too much. There was a saying that "loose lips sink ships". In these days of prolific social media chatter, it’s good to remember that "less is more". Be kind.  Be kinder than you want to be. It

Brave means going outside your comfort zone, trying new things but remaining cognitive about what you are doing. A brave lawyer is a good lawyer.

is not a sign of weakness, but of strength. Kindness towards each other finds solutions. Be generous. Generous in your thinking. Share your bounty. Hard fought disputes are based on narrow-minded personal views that are not sustainable in the kaleidoscope of life. Our lives are so much better for keeping an open mind.

Be brave. Brave does not mean stupid like riding a motorised bicycle without a helmet. Brave means going outside your comfort zone, trying new things but remaining cognitive about what you are doing. A brave lawyer is a good lawyer. Having reached the age of three score and ten, the time has come for younger, brighter, braver lawyers at Priest Legal to have the privilege of working for you.

“Hasta la vista” means “see you later” not good-bye. I look forward to catching up in more relaxed settings where we can chew the cud and reflect on whatever takes our fancy.

with KATE WOOD-FOYE

THE GUTS, GRIT AND GROUNDWORK OF REMARKABLE REGIONAL ENTREPRENEURS, INNOVATORS, LEADERS AND GAME CHANGERS.

Katie Turner is one of those rare entrepreneurs who doesn’t just build a business - she builds a feeling. As the vibrant Founder and Fun Director of DVINE Experiences, she celebrates regional tourism with her signature mix of charisma, creativity and wholehearted connection. Her sunsoaked, joy-filled approach has turned boutique tours into unforge able moments that champions the very best of the Mid North Coast. Katie shares the bold vision and brave thinking behind her journey as a true game changer in the experience economy.

KATIE TURNER

Your energy on DVINE Experiences’ Instagram is pure sunshine and spark, from vineyard strolls to luxe long lunches. What was the defining moment when you realised you could turn your passion for regional experiences into a business that genuinely changes the way people connect with the Mid North Coast? My love of travel has been lifelong. At 19 years old, I backpacked around Australia for 12 months, then explored Europe, Thailand and Brazil, with many more trips in between. Travel shaped my world view, it taught me connection, curiosity and how powerful shared experiences can be. My first job at 16 was at the Vogue Coffee Shop in Macquarie Centre, where I fell in love with hospitality. After school I was fortunate to begin a traineeship at the chef-hatted Mezza Luna in Potts Point (now The Butler). I was trained by the best, serving guests including Pierce Brosnan, Rene Rivkin and even Tom and Nicole celebrating a milestone. It was the cornerstone of my understanding of service, theatre and craft and the moment I realised hospitality could be an art form.

Speaking of the very best - Neil Perry was the GOAT. The way he shaped the Australian hospitality landscape was visionary, and being able to interview him on a podcast in 2022

remains one of my greatest “pinch me” moments. His influence reinforced for me that extraordinary hospitality isn’t just about food or wine, it’s about how you make people feel. We always loved the Mid North Coast. My grandfather lived in Port Macquarie, and we holidayed here for many years before COVID changed our world completely. In the middle of it, I returned home with a mini-bus and a mission: to literally drive business to regional operators who deserved to be seen.

You’re not just the founder, you’re also the fun director, it’s such a brilliant, cheeky title. How does this capture the essence of who you are as a leader, and how do you intentionally weave that sense of fun, heart and high-vibe hospitality into every DVINE experience? Thank you! Business can get so serious. I’ve been running businesses since I was 23, and DVINE is the first that blends my passion, purpose and lived experience into one offering.

The title “fun director” reminds me, and our guests, that fun is non-negotiable, and while I may be the face of DVINE, I’m backed by a small but mighty team: Michael Sallustio, our exceptional Partnership Manager; my husband Tom, whose unwavering support turned a wild idea into a real business; and my daughter Tilly, who brings her bright energy to our sales and guest engagement. Together, we

deliver the high-vibe, people-first hospitality that defines us. We flipped the script on what a tour can be. Every DVINE guest has a fun director on board, their personal concierge for the day or the entire weekend. They’re not just a driver; they’re the heartbeat of the experience, shaping the flow moment by moment.

We’re proudly all-inclusive - cold bottled water, snacks, grazing platters or lunch, balloons and bubbles for celebrations. Thanks to our partnership with Angove, every special occasion begins with bubbles. DVINE feels deeply handcrafted, boutique, sensory and personal, yet you’re simultaneously scaling, systemising and innovating behind the scenes. How do you balance that “Katie magic” with the operational engine needed to grow a modern tourism brand?

It’s a delicate balance and one we’re deeply intentional about. We use smart systems and AI so our energy stays focused on the humans in front of us. When someone reaches out, whether it’s a DM, call or email, the tech supports us so we can respond in a deeply personal way. 2026 is a major scale year for DVINE, but no matter how far we grow, the heart remains hospitality. Co-founding one of Sydney’s first full-stack podcasting studios, The PodHub, taught me the power of messaging, media and customer experience. DVINE is the culmination of 30 years of hospitality, entrepreneurship and travel. I’m also fortunate to have had an extraordinary mentor in my Mum, a single mother who introduced me to travel, culture and my love of books as a librarian. She taught me compassion, resilience and kindness, and those values shape both me and the business every day.

Your tours champion local winemakers,

creators and small businesses. What’s one moment or partnership that made you stop and think, “Yes, this is why DVINE exists”?

There are countless moments. Every operator has a story, and amplifying those stories is the heart of DVINE, but one moment stands out. Last year I brought Australian Diamonds Captain Paige Hadley to the region for a breakfast event created especially for young girls. Our event, “DVINE Conversations with Paige,” was designed to show that your postcode does not determine your potential. Paige spoke openly about leadership, mentorship and navigating social media with grace. It was powerful and deeply affirmed DVINE’s purpose: to bring world-class experiences to regional communities. We also partnered with Goudy Events to bring Real Housewives stars Teresa Giudice and Whitney Rose, and iconic performers from RuPaul’s Drag Race, to Port Macquarie for their “Bring Back My Wives” tour, the only regional stop. It was a huge moment for representation and celebration.

So much of your brand is about connection to place, people and joy. What have you learned about building a business that’s as emotionally resonant as it is commercially successful?

You must always come back to your core values. Every business I’ve founded has been service-driven, and money can’t be the only motivator. Experiences matter. People matter. Hospitality matters. Sustainability is a pillar for us, shaped by my time in Brazil witnessing rainforest devastation. Inclusion is another, and intuition is essential. As women especially, we must trust our internal compass. Our tagline is: Crafting DVINE Experiences with DVINE People in DVINE Places. And there is

only one “I” in DVINE for a reason - these moments are best shared.

You’re a passionate advocate for the region through Tourism Port Macquarie and have stepped onto stages and into studios as a speaker. How has that expanded your impact, and taught you about shaping the future narrative of regional tourism and digital innovation?

With a media background, a degree in economics and nearly 30 years of entrepreneurship, I’ve become a strong advocate for small business and for higher education that integrates real-world experience. One of the highlights of this year was being invited to sit as a panel judge at UNSW. Their Work Integrated Learning program pairs academic excellence with practical industry relevance, and being able to mentor and assess students working on live industry projects has been incredibly rewarding. Sitting on the Greater Port Macquarie Tourism Board has deepened my advocacy for regional operators who work tirelessly behind the scenes. I believe in collaboration over competition and love sharing what I’ve learned, through events like Digital Deep Dive and various podcasts.

My family and I fell in love with the region many years ago. Today we live on a small farm with chickens, geese, alpacas, two puppies, home-grown vegetables and the beach twelve minutes away. We swapped boardrooms for a bus and we’ve never looked back. Our mission is for the next generation not just to stay, but to thrive. We want to inspire, educate and create experiences that preserve our cultural identity while showcasing the beauty of the Mid North Coast with DVINE style.

DVINE stands for: Discover Vibrancy In New Experiences.

RESORT LIVING AT HOME

DESIGNS FOR LIFE focus contributor.

here’s something unmistakably blissful about walking into a space that feels like a resort. It’s not just luxury furniture or designer accents, it’s the mood. That sense of calm, connection, and effortless elegance that makes you exhale the moment you step inside. Resort-style decorating, especially in Australia, is about creating a sanctuary that embodies our love of nature, craftsmanship, and laid-back sophistication. From the texture of rattan to the crispness of linen, this look invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and savour everyday life as though you’re always on holiday.

BRINGING A HOLIDAY STATE OF MIND TO MODERN AUSTRALIAN INTERIORS

Few materials capture the spirit of resort living quite like rattan. Handwoven chairs, side tables, and statement bedheads add warmth and texture to a space, recalling afternoons under tropical palms. The craftsmanship, tells a story of heritage and artistry that resonates beautifully with Australia’s relaxed design ethos.

Pair these with hand-carved timber pieces; a richly stained coffee table, perhaps, or a detailed chest to anchor the look. Each curve and grain creates visual depth and a sense of connection to the natural world.

Underfoot, layer textural rugs in jute, wool, or a wonderful mix of both. They soften hard floors, ground the space, and invite bare feet.

The Essence of Resort-Style Living. Enter a home infused with resort-inspired design and you’ll notice it instantly - the light, the textures, the relaxed rhythm of the space. There’s a quiet confidence in every detail, from the materials chosen, to the palette inspired by sky, sand, and sea. It’s less about mimicry and more about mood: layering natural elements, tactile finishes, and soft tones to evoke a sense of retreat.

Think furniture that borrows from classic European, American, and Asian influences, but with an Australian twist. Pieces that honour tradition yet feel effortlessly modern. The key is to curate rather than clutter, combining comfort with understated elegance to achieve that elusive “holiday-at-home” feeling.

The Beauty of Rattan and Hand-Carved Details

Linen Dreams and Botanical Bliss. In the bedroom, the resort aesthetic finds its softest expression. Swap crisp cottons for pure 100% linen bedding. Its breathable texture and natural crinkle invite you to unwind in comfort, whatever the season. There’s something about linen that feels both luxurious and lived-in, the perfect balance for an Australian home.

Layer in botanical prints through cushions, wall art, or drapery to blur the line between indoors and out. Ferns, palms, and wild flora evoke the lushness of a tropical garden while keeping the mood sophisticated and serene.

Crisp Whites and Textural Layers. In the living room, the resort look starts with one hero piece: a white slip-covered sofa. Timeless, fresh, and practical, it captures the spirit of coastal escapes while being easy to care for. Change the vibe seasonally with cushion rotation. Think sandy neutrals in summer, or deeper tones in winter.

Exotic Touches and Eclectic Accents. Resort style is about blending textures, colours, and cultures to create an exotic sense of journey and discovery. Pile on cushions in tropical prints and geometric patterns, mix materials like velvet, linen, and silk, and finish with artisanal accessories. Hand-thrown ceramics, woven baskets, or sculptural lighting add that ‘collected over time’ feel that makes a home feel curated and deeply personal.

The Great Outdoors: Alfresco Luxury. Resortstyle living naturally extends beyond the walls. Our love of outdoor entertaining makes wicker and teak furniture essential ingredients; a teak dining table that will weather beautifully over time, or a set of oversized wicker lounge chairs dressed in neutral cushions. The goal is to blur boundaries between inside and out, making your deck or patio feel like an open-air retreat.

Your Sanctuary. Ultimately, the magic of resortstyle decorating lies in coherence. It’s in how textures, tones, and materials work together and isn’t about matching sets or trends. The modern Australian resort-inspired home isn’t about replicating a five-star suite; it’s about capturing the feeling it gives you. Calm mornings, golden light, the sound of the breeze through an open window. A place where everyday feels a little more special and where the holiday never ends.

Navigating the challenge of finding reliable local trades for your renovation projects is no small feat. At Oxley Nu-Look, we recognize the importance of trust in your renovation project.
