MOOSEY Dj

From beach clubs in Tulum and Ibiza to a summer residency at Aanuka Beach House, DJ Moosey (Denise Archer) is carving out a name for herself through groove-driven sets that are all about connection, energy and atmosphere. We caught up with the Coffs Coast local to talk about her journey into DJing, international experiences, original music, and what it’s been like bringing that global sound back home.

DENISE ARCHER

ow did DJ Moosey begin, and what fi ed o n o e o d o n

I’ve always loved music, but DJ Moosey really began when I studied at the Tulum DJ Academy in Tulum, Mexico. Being there opened my eyes to music as a shared experience, something that connects people instantly. What pulled me in was the energy and the feeling of being able to orchestrate a crowd, to guide how people feel in a space through sound. Once I experienced that, it stopped being just about playing music and became about creating moments.

That feeling was overwhelming in the best way, and I knew right then that this wasn't something I could walk away from. I wanted to keep chasing that connection.

my head for a moment, but the second I started playing, everything dropped away. The nerves vanished, and it felt instinctive, like muscle memory taking over. Then I watched the room change. People slowly started moving, the energy lifted, and suddenly there was this shared momentum between me and the crowd. I wasn’t just playing music anymore, I was guiding the mood, shaping the atmosphere. That feeling was overwhelming in the best way, and I knew right then that this wasn’t something I could walk away from. I wanted to keep chasing that connection.

The residency means a lot to me, especially because it’s at home. Aanuka Beach House has such a special atmosphere, and being trusted to help shape the vibe throughout summer has been really exciting. What I love most is building a relationship with the crowd over time, watching familiar faces return and being able to evolve the sound week by week. Aanuka is my favourite venue on the Coffs Coast and one I will always return to when I am home. It holds a really special place in my heart, the venue, the atmosphere and the staff. We are so lucky to have such an incredible venue on the Coffs Coast and being able to play there whilst home has been such a highlight for me personally. on n ed o e

What has the hometown reception been like so far?

The hometown support has been amazing. Playing to people who’ve watched my journey from the beginning makes it feel really full circle. There’s something special about bringing everything I’ve learned overseas back to the Coffs Coast and feeling that energy reflected straight back at me.

What have places like Ibiza and Tulum taught you about music, audiences,

and yourself as a performer?

Ibiza and Tulum taught me how powerful atmosphere is and having the right music for the perfect moment. I’ve been incredibly lucky being able to play at some of the most amazing places internationally, from Ibiza and Tulum beach clubs to a super yacht in St Tropez, the south of France. Those places showed me that great DJing isn’t about forcing a sound, it’s about reading the room and responding to it. They also helped me craft my sound, trust myself more as a performer and lean into patience, storytelling, and letting a set unfold naturally rather than rushing it. How would you describe your sound to

someone hearing DJ oo e o e fi time?

I’d describe my sound as groovedriven, uplifting, and energetic, with a strong focus on rhythm and flow. It’s music designed to move people, whether that’s on a dance floor or just catching a vibe, and it always prioritises connection and energy. I want people to feel something, feel joy and happiness and get the crowd dancing and having a good time. I want to see smiling faces, that’s what it’s all about.

n ed o fi o n e e e and what did you learn from the production process?

My first track and release is called Take

Me by Moosey Archer, which was signed under the record label Mustache Crew Records and you can listen on all streaming platforms, Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, Beatport etc. This release was inspired by everything I’d absorbed from playing out the moods, the spaces, and the reactions of crowds. Studying music production taught me how much intention goes into every detail of a track. It made me more disciplined, more patient, and gave me a deeper appreciation for how production and DJing inform each other. There is

something so magical about being able to create your own sound and it has been the most magical gift I have ever given myself.

Are there any goals or milestones you’re working towards right now? Where would you like to see your career head?

Right now, I’m focused on growing as both a DJ and a producer, building a body of work I’m genuinely proud of. Over the next few years, I’m playing more overseas.

I’m currently in Dubai and will be heading to Ibiza for the season. I have a lot of music in the pipeline so there will be more releases on the horizon with one coming very soon... watch this space. I want to continue expanding internationally while staying connected to home, playing meaningful shows, releasing quality music, and being part of the global electronic music community in a real, authentic way.

Thanks Denise.

Local Gumbaynggirr and Barkindji musician Manduway is quietly carving out a powerful space in the Coffs Harbour music scene, blending laidback acoustic sounds with deeply personal storytelling and a growing commitment to language and culture. From his beginnings to his latest release, Jalay, wri en entirely in Gumbaynggirr, Manduway’s journey is one of creativity, connection and continuing what the old people have passed down.

HMANDUWAY

i Manduway. You’re a Gumbaynggirr and Barkindji singer, songwriter and musician based here in Coffs Harbour. Can you tell us about your musical journey so far and how c fi ec e o o e

The first instrument that I started playing was the didgeridoo around years old while in high school. I started performing with the Aboriginal Dance roup at South rafton High. When I finished school I auditioned for (ACPA) The Aboriginal Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane. I completed a Certificate where I focused on dance subjects. After about 6 months I started to feel that the dance department wasn’t really clicking for me so I continued my course focusing on subjects in the music department. This is where I started learning the piano and guitar at about years old. I continued at ACPA and finished an

Advanced Diploma. I really loved my time at ACPA where I made many close friends who were very talented musicians. They taught me just as much as the teachers because we spent a lot of time jamming in the practice rooms at ACPA. During the course I started writing songs and I also played keyboard in a piece band with some other students and we played some gigs around Brisbane on the weekends.

SW South Coast and this was one of my performance highlights of the year.

How would you describe your sound to o eone e n nd o e fi e

Laid back acoustic music. I love to focus my songwriting around my piano playing and incorporate other melodic sounds of the acoustic guitar and vocal harmonies.

Over the years since my study, I have loved teaching piano and also played keyboard with some great musicians. I have played at the Tamworth Country Music Festival with Loren Ryan and Buddy Knox. I travelled to Tasmania in 2022 and played keyboard for Maanyung at the Dark Mofo Festival. I have also written string compositions for The Australian String uartet and The Penny uartet for their performances here in Coffs Harbour. Since 202 , here in Coffs Harbour I have spent more time on my own songwriting and singing. In ovember 2025, I performed at iiyong Festival on the

I moved back to the coast at the beginning of 202 and living back on umbaynggirr country has really inspired my songwriting. This coastline around Coffs Harbour is so beautiful and some of my lyric writing has been about the places here. I have been playing gigs around the area including Coffs Harbour, rafton, ambucca Heads, runga, Macksville and Bowraville. I have had such a great response when playing live. heartwarming conversations with elders and also young people about singing in our language. Your latest release Jalay is written entirely in Gumbaynggirr language. What inspired you to create a song fully in language?

Yes that’s right, Jalay is written in Gumbaynggirr language. So, in 2021 I started attending our Coffs Harbour community Gumbaynggirr language classes. I really wanted to learn more of my own language because unfortunately I grew up only knowing a handful of words. Being a part of our language community here has been inspiring. The language is beautiful and I am proud to be speaking, singing and also teaching it now.

Can you share what Jalay means and the story or feeling behind the song?

The word Jalay means to continue something, so the song is about continuing to sing in Gumbaynggirr language and travelling around and singing in our language; continuing what our old people have left to us.

What was the creative process like writing and recording in Gumbaynggirr? Did it change the way you approached songwriting?

Recording music is always a really fun experience. Having other great musicians on different instruments who bring their own skills to create a unique recording. Using Gumbaynggirr has helped me connect to something truly meaningful to me. It has helped

me learn my language and also teach it to others.

You’ve said you hope this song will inspire other Indigenous people to learn, sing and write songs in their languages. Why is that so important to you?

I hope that it will inspire all people in our local community. I hope that they will love the song because it’s about here specifically. I also work as a language teacher and I know that here in NSW there are small numbers of people who speak their Aboriginal languages in different communities. I know music can help people learn quickly. Playing music and being creative is fun and great for the brain.

What’s next for you creatively after Jalay? Are there more releases or projects in the works?

es, I have already finished recording a song in the studio. It’s actually quite a different vibe and I aim for it to be released in February this year. Thanks Manduway.

BECOMING

Becoming U is a place-based, youth-led initiative creating powerful pathways for young people to connect, create and lead change across the Coffs Coast. In this interview, Community Connector Tess Major and Bongil Bongil Youth Collective participant and Heywire winner Jack Jones share how the BBYC is amplifying young voices, building belonging and helping young people turn lived experience into purpose.

How would you describe Becoming U and its connection and purpose within the Bongil Bongil Youth Collective (BBYC)?

Becoming U is grounded in a strong belief that young people are powerful catalysts for change. We don’t create opportunities for young people, we create them with them, involving them from the very beginning to shape projects and lead decisions about their own futures.

Locally, this work comes to life through our partnership with the BBYC, a youth-led collective creating spaces where young people (YP) feel heard, supported and empowered to lead change across Toormina and the wider 2452 area.

What are some of the key challenges young people in the 2452 area are facing right now?

I actually hear young people in Toormina always raise the same issue: the need for a place of their own. Right now, there are no safe, dedicated spaces created by, or for, YP in our suburb, and the impacts of that absence are far-reaching.

Too often, the narrative paints young people as the problem; loitering, causing trouble or riding scooters with nowhere to be. But it’s

worth asking what any of us would do with no transport, no money for food and nowhere to go that offers safety, connection, activities and support. Toormina is calling out for a purpose-built Youth Hub, co-designed with and co-managed by the local community.

How do creative projects and mentorship help young people build resilience and leadership?

Creative projects for young people, alongside adults who passionately recognise their strengths, amplify their voices and encourage them to step forward, try new things, and grow builds a strong sense of belonging. This is the very foundation for resilience and leadership. When young people feel heard, they connect deeply; to the work, to each other and to their community. This connection encourages care, purpose, and confidence to take risks together. What kinds of changes have you seen in young people who become involved in the BBYC?

One of the most rewarding aspects of placebased, youth-led work is that change looks different for every young person. While growth is celebrated, the focus isn’t on ticking boxes, it’s about showing up consistently, building relationships, addressing inequity and strengthening Toormina, with Toormina. Along the way, I’ve seen remarkable shifts.

TESS MAJOR UNITING COMMUNITY CONNECTOR

Young people who were once shy, disengaged from school or hesitant to speak have grown into confident advocates returning to school, asking questions and even respectfully challenging adults in BBYC meetings. This growth was powerfully affirmed when five BBYC YP travelled to Whadjuk Country in Walyalup (Fremantle) to speak at ChangeFest 25, delivering one of the festival’s most popular sessions on accountability to young people!

What are your hopes for Becoming U and the BBYC over the next few years?

Plans are in motion to continue growing the work, further formalise the BBYC as a community-owned, youth-led entity, and deepen partnerships with locals, schools, services, and businesses. This includes welcoming new members, hosting more Table 2452 meals, delivering new creative projects, and working alongside key stakeholders to grow the newly formed Bongil Bongil Community of Practice.

A strong focus remains on lifting the visibility of Toormina’s YP, celebrating their impact and ensuring their voices are heard in wider community decision-making. Looking ahead, the long-term goal is clear: bringing the community’s vision of a purpose-built, cocreated Youth Hub in Toormina to life! Thanks Tess.

What has being a part of Becoming U and BBYC given you that you might not have found elsewhere?

I believe that BBYC has given me a voice and genuine influence over decisions, and the actual ability to start ideas, not just approve pre-existing ones that adults have started In the collective, being queer doesn’t have to be explained or censored, it s accepted and it’s hard to find spaces or people who actually recognise this. The BB C taught me things that you don’t typically learn through education such as how power works within communities, how to lead without taking away other people’s power, how to let ideas coexist with other ideas and how to mould them into new collaborations.

You’ve been recognised nationally through ABC’s Heywire competition, congratulations! In your story, you share about losing your Mum, coming out, and navigating high school. How did writing and sharing that story feel?

Having a platform to talk about that part of my life was huge. It was a bit of a vulnerable moment for me, especially when naming certain times in my life that have caused pain. The fact that it was going to be public

BECOMING U PARTICIPANT & HEYWIRE 2026 WINNER

was exciting, because it meant people who had experienced similar stories would be able to know that there is more to life than grief and chaos, but I also feel that there was this feeling of relief. I learnt that I didn’t have to worry that my story wasn’t good enough and I could share it without fear of judgement.

You’re heading to Canberra in February for the Heywire Regional Youth Summit. What are you most excited about? What message do you hope to take to a national stage?

I’m most excited to be around young people who know what the struggles of living rurally are like Also, just being surrounded by people who are generally likeminded, and being in places where people listen. I think the message I want to take to a national stage is that queer people in regional areas aren’t rare, we’re here, we’re building culture and we’re leading quietly everyday. What would you say to other young

people in regional communities who e n o find e ce

I’m most excited to be around young people who know what the struggles of living rurally are like! Also, just being surrounded by people who are generally likeminded, and being in places where people listen.

If you feel like you don’t belong where you are from, that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. ou’re not failing your town for wanting more, you’re not dramatic for feeling unseen and you’re not weak for being scared to stand up because places that help don’t exist yet. our place might not be where you are. Sometimes finding your place means helping build it so others can be there to support you because you don’t have to be on your journey alone. ueer people have always existed in small towns we have learnt over time how to hide ourselves to be safe, but quiet doesn’t mean invisible. ou don’t have to know who you are yet to deserve a voice, safety and a future. ou are allowed to take up space, even while you’re still becoming.

Thanks Jack.

HUGO WYNDHAM

A er excelling in last year’s Newcastle Permanent Primary School Maths Competition, local student Hugo Wyndham was selected to travel to Newcastle to take part in the elite Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Challenge. We caught up with Hugo to hear about the experience, from tackling hands-on problem solving activities at the University of Newcastle to representing Bishop Drui College on a state-wide stage.

Hthrough your mind when you found out you’d been chosen for the Maths Challenge in Newcastle?

I didn’t know what it was or what to expect, and I was a bit nervous because of that, but I was happy that I got to have this opportunity. How does it feel representing Bishop Druitt College at such a big state-wide event?

It made me feel proud and I wanted to do my best to represent my school and my district. It also boosted my confidence in mathematics. What was the most exciting or surprising part of the challenge day for you?

I really enjoyed the part where we got to play a game called Buzz Fizz which started easy but gradually got more and more challenging as they added more types of numbers that had to be replaced by buzz or fizz . Was there a moment during the challenge where you felt especially proud of yourself?

Yes, I felt happy and proud when I answered a difficult maths question correctly on a test. How was it meeting other students from

across NSW who also love maths?

At the start of the day I didn’t think that I would make any friends but about twenty minutes in I was sitting at a table full of new ones. Unfortunately it was only a one-day event so there wasn’t enough time to get to know the other kids really well, but we had fun together on the day.

Did the competition change the way you think about maths in everyday life? If so, how?

that you’ll take back to your classroom? I learnt that maths is used in a lot of everyday things and can be found wherever you go. It’s not just an abstract thing that you learn about in class.

I learnt that maths is used in a lot of everyday things and can be found wherever you go. It’s not just an abstract thing that you learn about in class.

Not really, I always liked maths and still love solving maths problems because it’s fun.

Who has helped or encouraged you most with your learning in maths so far?

Probably my Mum because she has always helped me to understand things and solve problems since I was little. Now of course, my maths teachers Mr Reedy and Mr Haynes, who always encourage me to push myself and learn new maths skills.

What did you learn from this experience

Do you think this experience has inspired any future career ideas for you?

Even before this experience I wanted to be an actuary, because they use mathematics to help solve real-life problems and predict the future. It was also good to have a look around the University of Newcastle because it gave me an idea about what studying at university might be like.

What advice would you give to other students who might want to enter the competition next year?

To try really hard to do well because going to Newcastle University was an amazing experience and even if you’re nervous about it you should definitely give it a go.

Thanks Hugo.

In 2025, the Hoey Moey was named Coffs Coast Business of the Year, alongside winning Hospitality and Tourism, Visitor Experience and Events at the Coffs Coast Business Awards. The judges highlighted the venue’s consistency, innovation and deep community contribution, recognising its role in supporting local jobs, tourism and live music at scale. NORTH COAST HOTEL GROUP

North Coast Hotel Group operates a diverse range of venues across the region. How would you describe the overall experience the group aims to offer guests? What we’re really trying to offer is the feeling of walking into your favourite local, no matter which one of our pubs you’ve stepped into. We keep things relaxed, welcoming and unpretentious. Good food, cold beer, friendly faces and plenty happening throughout the week. Whether you’re rolling in after the beach, grabbing dinner with the family, or catching up with mates, each venue is designed to feel easy, comfortable and genuinely local. At the end of the day, we want people to leave thinking, “That’s exactly the kind of pub I want in my town.”

What do you think sets North Coast Hotel Group venues apart from others on the Mid North Coast?

Honestly, it’s that we actually live here. Our managers, our staff, our families, we’re part of the communities we serve. That means we’re invested in more than just running pubs; we’re backing local clubs, hosting fundraisers, supporting musicians, giving groups a space to meet, and creating places people rely on. We don’t try to make every venue identical. Instead, we deliver consistent quality while letting each pub’s personality come through. That blend, local ownership, community commitment, and genuine hospitality, gives us a really strong connection with our towns. How does the group ensure each venue maintains its own personality while still e ec n e o de e o e nd

We set the standards; great service, quality food, clean venues, value for money, and then let each pub express these standards in its own way. The Hoey Moey has a totally different energy to the Corindi Beach Hotel, and both are different again from Coramba or the Seaview. We encourage our managers to shape their venue around their locals, because they know their crowd best. Behind the scenes we share resources and support,

but out front we celebrate the individuality. That’s why each place feels unique while still clearly being part of the broader North Coast Hotel Group. Food, entertainment and atmosphere are central to great hospitality, how do your venues deliver on all three?

For us, it starts with doing the basics properly and consistently: hot, fresh, generous meals, clean lines and well kept beer, plus service that’s friendly without being over the top. Entertainment is part of our DNA, live music, trivia, sport, local events, and every venue has its own weekly rhythm. Atmosphere is the magic that comes from all those things working together: good tunes, a buzzing room, locals mixing with visitors, and a team that makes people feel genuinely welcome. Those little details matter because they turn a simple night out into a memorable one. How important is live music, events and local partnerships across the group’s venues?

still feels like theirs. We’re the spot for after match gatherings, lunch meetings, social catchups, big celebrations and small ones. Some groups even rehearse or hold committee meetings with us because we’re that accessible. We’ve intentionally built our venues to be community hubs, not just businesses. If a club or group needs help, room, or support to run something, we do everything we can to say yes. People know our doors are open, and that’s something we’re proud of.

What feedback do you most commonly receive from patrons across the group?

The line we hear most is that our pubs “feel like home.”

We’re commi ed to improving our venues without losing their character. You’ll see fresh entertainment, menu updates, and thoughtful refurbishments where they add value.

They’re absolutely essential. Live music brings energy into a venue, it creates memories, supports local artists, and keeps people coming back, but our partnerships go way beyond music. We work closely with community clubs, schools, charities and volunteer roups. e host raf es, presentation nights, AGMs, charity dinners, and plenty more. Partnering with the community isn’t a marketing strategy for us, it’s part of who we are. We put real time, staff and resources behind these events because the success of our communities is tied to the success of our pubs. What role do your venues play within their local communities?

Our pubs are “third places”, somewhere people go that isn’t home or work, but

People appreciate the friendliness of the staff, the consistency of the food, and the fact that each venue has its own character. Families love the easygoing nature of our spaces, tradies rely on us for a solid feed, and music lovers know we keep the entertainment calendar full. We’re not chasing fancy or upscale, we’re focused on creating local pubs people are proud of, and the feedback shows we’re on the right track. Looking ahead, what can locals expect from North Coast Hotel Group venues in the coming year?

Plenty. We’re committed to improving our venues without losing their character. You’ll see fresh entertainment, menu updates, and thoughtful refurbishments where they add value. At Corindi Beach Hotel we’re pushing forward with a staged improvement plan to keep improving the amenity, Coramba will continue to develop the “destination” venue brand, Seaview food and family continue to be the cornerstone and The Hoey live music and events offering will be at the forefront of The Coffs Coast. Across the board, locals can expect steady improvements, great entertainment, and the same reliable hospitality they know us for.

J ULIEG d n

Australia’s first MasterChef, bestselling author, media personality and much-loved home cook Julie Goodwin is hi ing the road in 2026 with her first ever national live tour, Your Time Starts Now. Ahead of her show at C.ex Co s on Saturday 21st February, Julie chats about taking her story off the page and into an intimate live experience blending food, conversation and connection.

Hi Julie. You’re heading o on o e fi national live tour with o e o de ee like the right moment o e nd o o on e o d It comes off the back of my autobiography Your Time Starts Now, and some of the feedback I've received from that about the conversations that need to be had, it just felt right really.

I love to get in the room with real people, and have a live conversation rather than just be on one side of a TV screen or one side of a radio show. I just thought the time felt right to me. o o d o de c e e e ence o o eone dec d n e e o co e on on e n

It’s a two-hour live theatre-style show. There’ll be a little bit of cooking, but it’s not a twohour cooking demonstration. I’ll be in the kitchen cooking at different moments, and the night will be hosted by my old radio co-

host and friend, Rabs, who’ll help keep the conversation flowing. We’ll have a big screen with footage and take a bit of a walk down memory lane, revisiting moments from the MasterChef days and what’s happened since. There’ll also be plenty of conversation and Q&A with the audience about the things they really want to know.

My whole goal is for it to feel like that moment when you’ve got people over for dinner, you’re pu ing the finishing touches on the food, everyone pulls up a stool to the kitchen bench, and you chat and laugh.

It’s really about talking through my story; what life was like leading up to MasterChef, what happened behind the scenes, and what the journey has been like since. I’ll also share some of what happens when things don’t go to plan, when life gets tricky, and some of the things you go through in those moments… and the things that can bring you back.

e o end coo n o e n nd con e on

What do you love o o e o co ed o e e on o d o What I love is being in the room, face to face with people, interacting with them and giving them the chance to ask the questions they’re actually interested in. It’s not just me guessing what people want to hear about, it becomes a real conversation.

My whole goal is for it to feel like that moment when you’ve got people over for dinner, you’re putting the finishing touches on the food, everyone pulls up a stool to the kitchen bench, and you chat and laugh. Those kinds of conversations can move from serious to funny to informative in a really organic

way. You know that feeling? That’s what I’m hoping to create. That’s why I love being in the room with people; I get to converse, not just speak. I get to find out what they actually want to know. The questions can range from Is the food cold when the judges taste it ’ to ‘How can you tell if you’re about to burn out ’ It can be anything, and I’m open to talking about whatever it is people want to talk about.

Food has always been central to your story. What do you think it is about cooking that makes it such a powerful way to connect with people?

I

I think the word you just used there connect, really says it all. Food is how we connect. As cultures, societies, communities and families, it’s how we come together. I honestly can’t think of an important occasion where food isn’t central, and the microcosm of those big celebrations is our everyday dinner table or breakfast table. What food does is make you stop and take a minute. It doesn’t just nourish our bodies, it creates those moments where we pause and communicate with each other. What do you want for dinner ’ How was your day ’ Pass the chicken.’ Who wants the last bit?’ It’s all communication and communion. Within that space, the conversation can be light and funny this happened to me today’, but it can also go deeper, like I’m actually feeling quite stressed about this.’ You get to workshop life with the people around you, whether that’s family, friends or even neighbours. It’s connection. So for me, the food itself, the recipes themselves, are really just a vehicle for conversationand that’s exactly what this show is about.

honestly

can’t

think of an important occasion where food isn’t central, and the microcosm of those big celebrations is our everyday dinner table or breakfast table. What food does is make you stop and take a minute.

I’ll be cooking and talking about food, but it’s really a way into so many other conversations.

Are there particular recipes in the show that hold special meaning for you or that you’re particularly excited about sharing?

The recipes I’ve chosen are all selected because of the stories that come with them, how they relate to my own journey, and my MasterChef story in particular. There will definitely be some cooking tips along the way, and hopefully people will walk away with a bit of knowledge, an idea, or some inspiration to try something in their own kitchen. But at its heart, it’s really about how the food connects to the stories being shared.

Rabbit has been your longtime co-host and friend. What makes him the perfect person to share the stage with? What will be his role on the night?

His role will be to steer the conversation. He’ll essentially be the MC and interviewer on the night, helping guide the discussion,

bringing in audience questions and acting as the moderator. He’s the right person for this because we know each other so well and we bounce off each other naturally. He can steer the conversation the way you would around a family table, moving easily between the light and the shade, the serious and the funny. He’ll make sure there are plenty of laughs and a bit of shenanigans along the way, while also being able to navigate the more sensitive topics and create a safe space for whatever people want to bring to the table.

Why was it important to you to focus on regional centres like Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie?

In all honesty, it’s because this is where I’m from. It’s home to me. I understand the regions because it’s where I live and where I’ve raised my family. I get the challenges that a lot of regional centres face, and I know how nice it is when things are brought to us, instead of us always having to go to the cities to experience them. I really love the nature of regional communities. It’s where I’m comfortable, it’s where I feel at home, and I think these are places where people genuinely look out for each other. I think it’s going to be a beautiful night.

Thanks Julie.

NOT ALL BUBBLES ARE CREATED EQUAL

Sparkling wines may look similar in the glass, but the way those bubbles are made can be vastly different. From the precisiondriven traditions of champagne to the fresh, fruit-forward appeal of prosecco, production methods play a defining role in a wine’s texture, flavour, and price.

Champagne is produced exclusively in France’s Champagne region using the traditional method (méthode traditionnelle), the most complex and labour-intensive way to make sparkling wine. After a base wine is created, a small amount of sugar and yeast is added before the bottle is sealed. A second fermentation then takes place inside the bottle, trapping carbon dioxide and creating the fine, persistent bubbles champagne is famous for.

sealing. The result is a sparkling wine of finesse, structure, and remarkable aging potential.

ltimately, it’s the production method that shapes not just the bubbles, but the entire personality of the wine in your glass. focus contributor.

The wine is aged on its lees, the spent yeast cells, often for years. This extended contact builds texture and complexity, contributing flavours of brioche, toast, and nuts. Through a process called riddling, bottles are gradually turned so sediment collects in the neck before being removed during disgorgement. A final addition of dosage balances the wine before

Prosecco, by contrast, is made using the Charmat or tank method, where the second fermentation occurs in large stainless-steel tanks rather than individual bottles. Once complete, the wine is filtered and bottled under pressure. This quicker, more economical approach preserves fresh fruit flavours, producing wines with aromas of pear, apple, and white flowers, softer bubbles, and an easy-drinking style meant to be enjoyed young. Beyond champagne and prosecco, other methods exist. The traditional method is used worldwide with excellent results, while the ancestral method, seen in pét-nat wines, bottles wine mid-fermentation, creating gentler fizz and a more rustic charm. At the opposite end, carbonation simply injects gas into still wine, producing large, fleeting bubbles and little complexity.

CRITTERS DISTILLERY

wHIsKy RELEASE

Cri ers Distillery Prepares to Unveil Its First Whisky: A Coastal Single Malt with Local Soul

Woolgoolga’s award-winning Critters Distillery is set to enter a new chapter, announcing that its long-anticipated whisky program is officially underway. Known for its paddock-to-glass philosophy and meticulous hands-on craft, the distillery is applying its signature purity and precision to a spirit deeply rooted in tradition yet shaped by the character of the Coffs Coast.

The inaugural whisky will follow a single malt–style framework, distilled from Australian grain and shaped through Critters’ careful fermentation and distillation methods. While

the heart of the whisky is brought to life at the distillery, the journey begins off-site. Critters collaborated with local favourites Woolgoolga Brewery and King Tide Brewery, where the initial mash was created before being transferred to the distillery for fermentation, distillation and aging. This partnership infuses the whisky with a strong sense of regional identity, drawing on the strengths of the Coffs Coast’s vibrant craft beer community.

Aged for a minimum of three years, the whisky is resting in a variety of carefully selected casks that showcase the region’s diversity. Expect nuanced expressions shaped by different barrel types, with both single-cask releases and

blended editions planned. Tasting notes are anticipated to include honeyed toffee, rich malt and a subtle hint of spice.

The single-cask bottlings will offer whisky enthusiasts a glimpse into the unique personality of each barrel, while the blended expressions promise balance, depth and Critters’ unmistakable clean finish.

The first release is scheduled for Easter 2026 and will be celebrated with a Prohibition-style launch event at the distillery. uests can expect an immersive evening featuring cigars, whiskyinspired cocktails and a nod to old-world whisky culture, marking a bold and memorable debut for Critters’ first whisky.

With its ocean-inspired identity, smallbatch focus and commitment to traditional craftsmanship, Critters Distillery’s upcoming whisky is set to become a standout addition to the Australian spirits landscape. Further details about the release and launch event will be announced in the coming weeks.

For fans of honest, handcrafted spirits, this is one release worth waiting for.

CHRISTOPHER FRASER

Hi Chris. The release of Critters Rum and Whisky has been highly anticipated. What has the journey been like from concept to bottle?

It’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. These spirits have taken years of patience, passion, and perseverance. From day one, we committed to doing everything the right way, not the fastest. That meant sourcing quality molasses and grains, refining our fermentation, and being deeply hands-on at every stage.

The ageing process was the real test. You can’t rush it. We visited the barrels regularly, tasted as the spirit evolved, and trusted the journey. Over time, flavours deepen, aromas develop, and a real identity forms. Holding the finished bottles now feels surreal, and incredibly satisfying.

What inspired you to branch out into rum nd ec fic

We’ve always been drawn to rum and whisky because they’re expressive spirits. They reflect climate, ingredients, and barrel influence and there’s something romantic about that.

Rum felt like a natural fit given our coastal NSW location and Australia’s sugarcane

With a reputation for cra ing exceptional spirits on the Coffs Coast, Cri ers Distillery has just added two long-awaited releases to its lineup - small-batch Australian Rum and Whisky. Known for its paddockto-glass philosophy and hands-on approach, the Woolgoolga distillery has quietly built a loyal following. We caught up with Director and Head Distiller Christopher Fraser to talk patience, provenance, and the journey from concept to cask.

heritage. Whisky, on the other hand, is the ultimate distiller’s challenge. Crafting it from scratch pushes every skill you have. Both spirits allowed us to experiment creatively and really explore what Australian spirits can be.

Sustainability and local sourcing are central to Critters’ philosophy. How does your paddockto-glass approach shape these spirits? It’s at the heart of everything we do. We work closely with local growers and suppliers and keep all stages in-house, from fermentation to distillation and bottling. It reduces our footprint and creates spirits that are genuinely connected to our region. It’s not always the most efficient way, but it’s the most authentic. You can taste that provenance in every sip.

Complete control is a game changer. By producing everything in-house, we influence flavour, mouthfeel, aroma, and texture. We can fine-tune yeasts, fermentation times, and barrel choices. Small tweaks make a big difference. That dedication really shows in the final product.

By producing everything inhouse, we influence flavour, mouthfeel, aroma, and texture. We can fine tune yeasts, fermentation times, and barrel choices.

What can customers expect from the rum and whisky?

The rum is rich and character-driven, with notes of toffee, burnt sugar, spice, and subtle oak, finishing clean and dry. The whisky is smooth and layered, vanilla, honey, roasted grain, and a gentle hint of smoke. Both are approachable yet complex, designed to be savoured and shared.

What’s next for Critters Distillery?

Producing your own alcohol sets you apart. How does that control impact o

We’ve always got something aging quietly, different casks, seasonal experiments, and limited releases. This is just the beginning of our rum and whisky journey, and we’re loving every second of it. Thanks Chris.

( GUS ) VASIC

Melbourne surf-rock favourites e Grogans are bringing their trademark high-energy live show back to the Co s Coast, hi ing the stage at the Hoey Moey on Friday, February 13. We caught up with band member Gus Vasic to talk regional touring, creative evolution, and what fans can expect from what’s set to be a fun night of live music in Co s Harbour.

i Gus. The Grogans have built a reputation for high-energy live shows, what can Coffs Harbour fans expect from the upcoming gig at the Hoey Moey?

Pretty much exactly that. We’re bringing a really fun set. We’ve got a solid set arranged for this tour; a mix of current tracks, some oldies thrown in, and a couple of newbies that no one’s really heard yet. But yeah, it’ll be the same old Grogans energy, that’s for sure. You’ve toured extensively across Australia and overseas, what keeps bringing you back to these regional areas and coastal town gigs? What do you enjoy about them?

There’s just such a strong passion for music in regional spots. Being outside the major cities, people might not get as much exposure to a wide range of live acts, so whenever we go to regional areas the passion and energy from the crowd is second to none. It just feels really good playing to people who are genuinely enthusiastic and really want to be there. Regional touring can be pretty gruelling travel-wise, but the second you get to the show and feel the energy in the room, it definitely makes it all worth it.

Your sound has evolved a lot over the last 10 years while still staying unmistakably yours. How would you describe where the band is at creatively right now?

We released Stagger not too long ago in the grand scheme of things, and since

then we’ve just been writing a whole lot more. I feel like with each record we step into a new light in terms of how we’re writing. Our environments change, we change, and there are all these different factors that shape it. We’ve always been comfortable writing together, but the more we do it, the easier it gets. We understand each other more now and there’s a really good creative flow between us. I think our songwriting has definitely matured, and it’s hard to explain, but you’ll hear it soon enough. Looking back, what do you think have been some of e o defin n moments for the band so far?

band has in mind for 2026? More tours, new music, collaborations..?

I probably can’t share too many details, but we’ve been writing a lot and we’ll be hitting the studio this year. There’ll definitely be new music on the horizon, a lot of new tunes, and we’ll still be playing plenty of shows. There are lots of exciting things in the works. I’m really keen to get into the studio and I’m feeling good about the tracks we’ve been writing, so I’m excited for everyone to hear them.

REGIONAL TOURING CAN BE PRETTY GRUELLING TRAVEL-WISE, BUT THE SECOND YOU GET TO THE SHOW AND FEEL THE ENERGY IN THE ROOM, IT DEFINITELY MAKES IT ALL WORTH IT.

It’s hard to pick, we’ve been grinding for a long time and there have been a lot of highlights. Over the last couple of years, going over to the States was a big one. We toured all through the US and up into Canada with Ocean Alley and played some pretty amazing rooms. Getting a taste of that full bus life over there was an experience for sure. Another big thing has been backing ourselves - booking bigger rooms even when it feels a bit uncomfortable and ticket sales can be pretty last-minute. Sticking to our guns and seeing that pay off feels really good.

Can you share any plans or goals the

Finally, why should locals make sure they’re at the Hoey Moey on Friday the 13th?

Just get down for a good bit of fun, if you know what’s good for you, you won’t regret it! Come for a fun night with the Grogs and bring the energy. The last time we played the Hoey it was such a fun night, so go for a surf or a swim beforehand, come down for a beer and enjoy some live music. It was a super sick gig last time and I’m keen to do it all over again.

Thanks Gus.

KAREN BURNS

With an infectious smile and boundless energy, Karen Bu onBurns is the creative force behind some of the Co s Coast’s most heartfelt imagery. A selfdescribed “li le pocket rocket,” her photography is grounded in connection, authenticity, and joy capturing moments that feel as good as they look. From her beginnings in Berry to formal training on the Gold Coast and a flourishing career on the Co s Coast, Karen’s warm, candid style and love of storytelling shine through every frame.

ARLINGTONLANE PHOTOGRAPHY

You describe yourself as a “little pocket rocket behind the lens.” How would you describe your personality, and how does it shape your work?

I am a little lady with a warm personality. I love to laugh and believe that the cup is always half full. I love to make people smile and feel comfortable, so I connect with my clients first to help them relax and be their most authentic selves. That’s where the magic happens. Growing up in Berry on the NSW South o e n ence e ed e your creative eye?

Growing up in the little town of trees, (aka Berry), surrounded by the most beautiful countryside landscapes and dreamy little cottages, my childhood was lived to the full on property with horses, cattle and veggie gardens. My early days were nostalgic, wholesome and some may say, even a little romantic. At school my favourite subject was art, and my early days were spent doing beautiful sketches of horses, landscapes and still life. On the weekends I rode horses and helped my grandparents on their beef cattle stud. I would also spend many weekends on my best friend's dairy farm just down the road. Their farm was at the base of Coolangatta Mountain, so from helping round up and milk 250 cows to riding up the

mountain like the Man from Snowy River to enjoy the panoramic views with a picnic lunch was such a special time in my life. From these experiences growing up, I have maintained a love of the outdoors, the arts and connection with people and animals. I love to show this through my imagery by bringing everyone’s own unique story to life through my lens.

From the countryside to the sea. It was then I found a new love in the coastline, beaches and all things ocean where I made some amazing friends who I would travel with.

You began your career as a primary school teacher. What prompted the shift from the classroom to photography?

I graduated from university at 22, so very much still a youngster who was yet to explore all the opportunities life had to offer. Keen to spread my wings after university, I relocated to the Gold Coast, from the countryside to the sea. It was then I found a new love in the coastline, beaches and all things ocean where I made some amazing friends who I would travel with. They showed me that you should work to live rather than live to work. I found that while I loved children, teaching did not fill my cup like being creative did. While on maternity leave at the age of 30, I made

the brave decision to start a new career in photography as I wanted to be a mum first and for work to fit around raising our son Blake - I didn’t want to miss a moment. Whenever I make a decision to try something new, I always want to master my craft. This led me to enrolling to complete my Diploma in Photography. I was delighted to graduate in just 12 months with Distinction. I feel as a professional it is important to have the proper training to be able to give your clients the best results, and without the support from your loved ones, most dreams do not become your reality. For me, my husband and my parents have been my biggest hype team through this journey, I couldn’t have done it without them. Thank you to Greg, Mum and Dad for believing in me.

Are there skills from teaching that still n ence o o o c en od I learned so much about children while teaching over the years and this has been resourceful in helping me to properly engage children of all ages and keep them interested during their session. Little games and prompts go a long way, and I have a whole lot of them up my sleeve. My sessions are always child led as a relaxed child makes for a relaxed parent and vice versa. I can see quickly when we need to change it up and move onto something else. My motto with children is “keep them moving and they’ll keep smiling”.

AANUKA

BEACH HOUSE

Nestled among tropical gardens with the ocean just steps away, Aanuka Beach House is a much-loved Mid North Coast wedding and events destination, known for its relaxed coastal se ing, versatility and experienced team creating unforge able celebrations by the sea.

Aanuka Beach House is a long-standing favourite for weddings on the Mid North Coast, what do you believe truly sets the venue apart?

Aanuka Beach House is a place people really feel connected to. Almost everyone has an Aanuka story, whether it be a family holiday, a milestone celebration or even their parents’ wedding. This nostalgia gives the venue real heart. Since being acquired by Tilley & Wills in 2024, this is something that we have wanted to continue as members of our team share these same stories.

Undergoing a multi-million-dollar renovation, the venue has been elevated to create a truly unique space while preserving its soul. With a wide range of adaptable spaces, Aanuka has captured the feeling of being overseas without leaving NSW. The crown jewel of the venue is our little beachside chapel, which offers the romance of a traditional ceremony without the formality of a church. We also offer onsite accommodation through Aanuka Beach Resort that allows guests to relax and fully immerse themselves in the celebration without the

logistics of getting to and from the wedding for not only the bride and groom, but their friends and family also.

How does your team collaborate with couples to personalise their day and make the planning journey feel effortless?

We understand this is one of the biggest days of our couples’ lives, and our role is to make it feel calm, seamless and joyful. Our Wedding Specialist, Mandy is assigned to every couple as their dedicated point of contact from start to finish, so nothing ever feels lost or overlooked. Mandy, is local to the area and brings international experience hosting and curating weddings around the globe, including culturally diverse celebrations to week long festivities. With deep local knowledge and strong supplier connections, Mandy acts as a fail-safe throughout the planning processfilling gaps, guiding decisions, and ensuring your wedding is always front of mind. On the day, she curates the entire experience, guiding guests through the spaces and liaising seamlessly with your chosen suppliers so you can simply enjoy every moment.

Our team prides itself on building real

relationships - we’re in it with you, not just ticking boxes. Building relations that grow into friendships with all of our guests.

From beachfront ceremonies to elegant receptions, what makes Aanuka such a versatile destination for celebrations? Versatility is built into everything we do. With over 40 years of combined experience between Tanya Watts, Brooke Allen and Mandy Chahal, our team know how to adapt each space to suit the couple, the guest list and the vision. From intimate beachfront ceremonies to larger-scale receptions, our variety of spaces, flexible teams and onsite accommodation allows celebrations to flow effortlessly from one moment to the next. We also stay ahead of trends, pushing creative boundaries and connecting couples with the right people to bring even the wildest ideas to life. No request or dream is too big.

Looking ahead, what’s next for weddings and events at Aanuka Beach House?

Let’s just say… we’re not done yet! In classic Aanuka Beach House fashion we always have something in the works. Keep an eye on our channels - the best is still to come.

Start With a Great Plan

Every unforgettable celebration begins with a little organisation and plenty of excitement. Choosing your date, defining your style and creating a loose timeline allows everything else to fall into place with ease. For destination weddings or multi-day celebrations, coordinators can help create simple itineraries that allow space for travel, welcome drinks, relaxed beach walks and plenty of unhurried time with loved ones.

With ceremony and reception options all in one location, Pacific Bay allows couples to focus on the experience rather than logistics, meaning fewer moving parts and more time to savour the moment.

Celebrate the Coffs Coast Spirit

One of the great joys of choosing Pacific Bay Resort is the opportunity to embrace everything that makes the Coffs Coast so special. From locally sourced blooms and seasonal menus to coastal-inspired styling, and live music from regional artists, celebrations here often reflect the relaxed yet vibrant spirit of the area.

The resort works closely with a trusted network of local vendors, making it easy to personalise your event, whether you’re planning a wedding day, rehearsal dinner, engagement celebration or romantic anniversary soirée.

Big Party or Intimate Moment

From locally sourced blooms and seasonal menus to coastal-inspired styling and live music from regional artists, celebrations here o en reflect the relaxed yet vibrant spirit of the area.

Love doesn’t come with a guest-list requirement. Pacific Bay is just as suited to an intimate elopement as it is to a lively gathering of family and friends. Smaller celebrations can create a beautifully personal atmosphere and often free up budget for elevated dining, bespoke styling or an extended honeymoonstyle stay at the resort.

With a range of indoor and outdoor spaces available, flexibility is a hallmark of Pacific Bay celebrations, allowing couples to design a day that feels right for them.

Make Your Guests Feel at Home

Many weddings and events at the resort naturally become mini holidays for guests. Accommodation packages, group breakfasts, welcome hampers filled with local treats, post-celebration brunches and organised transfers help create a relaxed and welcoming experience for everyone involved. Encouraging guests to stay onsite also means

the celebration doesn’t have to end after one night, it becomes a shared experience, filled with connection, laughter and lasting memories.

From “I do” moments on the Bayside Green lawn or the sandy shores of Charlesworth Bay Beach, to rehearsal dinners filled with laughter, surprise proposals and milestone anniversaries, Pacific Bay Resort is a place where love is celebrated in all its forms.

With a breathtaking coastal setting and a team devoted to the details, the only thing left for you to do is soak up every moment.

Bellinger Valley-born filmmaker Samuel L. Harrison has turned a childhood fascination with capturing moments into a career preserving love stories on film. Known for his deeply story-driven, cinematic approach, Sam creates wedding films that allow couples to relive not just how their day looked, but exactly how it felt.

SAMUEL L HARRISON

Hi Sam. You were born and raised in the Bellinger Valley and fell in love with capturing moments from a very young age. Can you take us back to those early days and how your on o fi fi e n

I first started to realise I enjoyed capturing things through photo and film when I was about or years old, circa 2002, when the first okia camera phone was released, the 650. My Dad got one, and of course the fact it had a camera was all the rage at the time (that makes me feel far too old, also )

I would run around the house with his phone recording anything and everything, much to the detriment of my Dad’s sanity

My focus shifted to photography as I grew through school and high school, photographing for hair stylists, real estate agents, parties, events, and later down the line, weddings. It wasn’t until later in life that I rekindled my love for recording moments in motion

At what point did you realise weddings were something you wanted to focus on c e e

In late 2020, an old school friend reached out and asked if I could film her wedding. I’d been focused on photography for many years by this

point, but I said yes. I had so much fun on the day, as I always do at weddings, but the video approach felt different - more immersive and, honestly, more enjoyable. Crafting a tangible story in the edit and seeing their emotional reaction afterward, more visceral than any photo album I’d delivered, was incredibly cup-filling. That’s when it clicked that this was a genuinely special gift to give people.

A wedding day is something that people spend so many months, years, decades even, preparing for. When the big day finally comes, it usually ends up racing by at warp speed. Being able to let people relive the sights and sounds of all the most important moments of their day in realtime is truly a beautiful offering, I feel How would you describe your wedding fi o co e o e d co e n o o o e fi e

Like any art form, my artistic expression is

constantly, yet subtly, evolving and improving as I learn both as a filmmaker and a human. That said, what doesn’t change is my deeply story-driven approach and meticulous attention to detail. I focus heavily on audio captured throughout the day, the vows, speeches from your most beloved and maybe your uncle too, and sometimes even the cheeky whispers during your portrait session. I combine this with intentional, cinematic imagery to tell a wedding story that feels honest, emotional, and uniquely theirs.

en o e fi n edd n d what moments are you most instinctively e c n o

Aside from all the obvious moments like the first look, first kiss, vow reactions, the list goes on it’s often the small, fleeting moments that couples engage with most when watching their film back. A moment of collection before the

aisle walk, a parent’s tear, or the colour escaping the couples’ face as the best man delivers the speech to end all speeches.

It’s also about anticipation. Knowing, for example, that most people (not all!) hug heartto-heart from the left in emotional moments, so positioning myself to aim over the right shoulder of the couple to capture the faces of those hugging them.

What does the process of working with you

c oo e o e fi en o o de e n e fin fi

I’ll always reply to an enquiry as soon as I can, at which point I’ll arrange a catch up to get to know them and see if we are the right fit. This can be a game of Mario Kart, Jenga, a cup of coffee or simply a phone/video call. If the vibe is right, and they’d like to go ahead (yay!), I’ll send them through a link to a client portal containing a quote and contract.

We’ll keep in touch throughout the lead up to the big day, and on the day itself have a total and complete blast together The idea is that by this point, I’m not a stranger with a camera, but an extension of the bridal party that’s there to cheer you on and have a great time celebrating you.

After the wedding, editing begins. Typically, couples receive a 15–30 second teaser within 48

hours, a one-minute cinematic trailer within two weeks, and their final film within sixteen weeks. Everything is delivered via a personalised online portal and a custom engraved USB.

The idea that love is awesome, community is awesome, parties are awesome and people are awesome These come together in the melting pot that is a wedding day to produce some of the most vibrant, vulnerable and fundamental emotions in our lives. These are worth capturing, I think.

What advice would

you give couples when choosing a wedding deo e

It’s one thing to take a good video, another to record good audio, and another altogether to be prepared for the worst and being able to adapt on the fly. Weddings are live events that never go exactly to plan.

e idea that love is awesome, community is awesome, parties are awesome and people are awesome! ese come together in the melting pot that is a wedding day.

I always suggest couples ask their prospective videographer how audio is recorded, what backup plans exist if gear fails, how multiple moments are captured simultaneously, how vendors collaborate on the day, and how footage is backed up afterwards. These questions quickly reveal experience and professionalism. What are you most excited about creatively over the next year and n o e e

WALLFLOWER & WILD PHOTOGRAPHY

Wedding photographer Elise McKinnon is the heart behind Wallflower & Wild

Photography, where she captures weddings with a deeply emotive, storydriven approach. In this interview, Elise shares how photography became her happy place, and how motherhood, presence and connection continue to shape the way she documents love.

i Elise. You’re the photographer behind o e d ed in Coffs Harbour. Can you share a little about your journey into photography nd o ec e o ce

Photography found me during a season of life where everything felt loud and uncertain. I picked up a camera initially as a way to slow down and notice the quieter things, light, movement, connection, moments that often pass unnoticed. Over time, it became my happy place because it grounded me. It gave me a way to be present, creative and observant, even when life felt full. Wallflower Wild grew from that place, from a love of honest moments and a desire to preserve them with care and intention.

o o e o o o e ood ed e o ee o en e o on nd connec on

Having children reshaped the way I see the world. I wouldn’t have picked up a camera again without them. Motherhood brought with it a deep awareness that time is borrowed and that moments are fleeting and unrepeatable. That perspective carries strongly into how

I photograph weddings. A wedding is one of the rare times when all of your favourite people gather in one place; that alone makes it sacred. My approach is the same as when I photograph my children, to honour the moment as it is. Connection matters. Details matter. The laughter, scrunched noses, deep breaths, tears, embodied presence and love. They’re the things we want to remember about our people and about the day itself.

Was there a turning

creatively and emotionally; it opened up whole new worlds of opportunity that felt deeply aligned.

o o d o define o o o c e

Over time, it became my happy place because it grounded me. It gave me a way to be present, creative and observant, even when life felt full.

I never really set out with the intention of photography becoming a professional role. It seemed to snowball organically, starting with taking photos of friends, being offered branding opportunities, and eventually being trusted with people’s most sacred moments. Eventually, it became clear my weeks were filling up with shoots, and I realised I needed to pursue it more intentionally. It filled my cup

My style is emotive, natural and storytelling driven. I lean into soft light, earthy tones and movement rather than stiff posing, and I want my images to feel timeless rather than trend-led, photographs that feel like memories rather than performances. While my approach is largely unobtrusive, I am very comfortable offering guidance and gentle direction when it is needed. Whether that is helping couples settle into a moment, move naturally together, or feel confident in front of the camera, my aim is always to create imagery that feels relaxed, honest and true to who they are.

do o en o o o c n co e edd n d

I love witnessing two people choose each other,

and being invited into a day that is entirely about them, their story, their people and the life they are building together. A wedding is one of the few times in life where couples are given space to celebrate their love openly, to hear it reflected back to them, and to have it named and honoured by the people who know them best.

Alongside the ceremony and celebration, I am drawn to the quieter expressions of love, the nerves, reassurance, laughter and tenderness. It feels incredibly special to document those moments so they can return to them long after the day has passed.

o oce e o e fi conversation through to the wedding day itself?

My process is designed to feel considered, personal and unhurried. We begin with a call, followed by a relaxed meet and greet where we talk through priorities, expectations and the rhythm of the day. An engagement shoot is

included, allowing us to build familiarity ahead of the wedding and giving me insight into how my couples like to be seen.

In the lead up, couples are supported with timeline refinement and practical coaching around key moments, so nothing feels rushed or uncertain on the day. While I am generally unobtrusive, I am calm under pressure and confident guiding when needed. From timeline breakdowns to dress malfunctions, I am there to support far more than the photographs themselves. I’m the photographer and the quiet carrier of the emergency kit. Tissues, needle and thread are just as essential to me as my gear. That preparedness allows the day to move with ease, even in the unexpected.

Are there particular parts of a wedding day o find e ec o n o o o

I’m deeply drawn to the intimate moments of a wedding day, private vows before getting ready, first looks shared with loved ones, whispered words of love and pride, quiet tears. I am also mindful of the moments where couples honour the people who are present in their hearts but no longer able to stand beside them.

Just as much, I love the joy and lightness of the day. Laughter spilling out during speeches, spontaneous dancing, kids underfoot, warm embraces. Those moments of celebration and connection bring balance, and together they are what make a wedding day feel full, alive and unforgettable.

What advice would you give couples choosing a wedding photographer?

Choose someone whose work makes you feel something, but also someone you trust implicitly. Your photographer needs to be emotionally attuned, but they also need to be technically prepared. This is a day you cannot redo.

Ask about backup equipment, weatherproof gear and contingency plans in case of technical issues. Knowing your photographer has systems in place allows you to relax fully and be present, and that peace of mind is just as important as the images themselves.

What inspired you to turn your passion for food into a business?

Food has always been my love language. I’ve always been the one hosting, creating spreads, and bringing people together. I realised that what I was doing for family and friends could actually bring joy to others on a bigger scale, and turning that passion into a business just felt like the next step.

You juggle motherhood, fulltime work, and a business, how do you make it all work? It’s definitely a juggle, lots of planning and late nights. I try to be intentional with my time and kind to myself when things don’t go perfectly. My kids motivate me every single day, and showing them the value of hard work and passion makes it all worth it. This year, I’m stepping back from full-time work to pursue my business more, which excites me so much.

What do you love most about creating platters and grazing tables for people? I love knowing that my work becomes part of someone’s special moment. Whether it’s a birthday, wedding celebration, or just bringing people together, being able to create something that people gather around and enjoy together is incredibly fulfilling. What has been the most rewarding moment since starting your business? Seeing repeat clients and receiving messages about how much people loved their platters never gets old. Knowing that people choose me again and recommend my business to others is incredibly rewarding. Where can people learn more about your business? Grazing by Kanisha on Instagram or Facebook. I regularly share event setups, special moments, and all the services we offer. Alternatively, you can give me a call on 0437 476 009

Corrie Wade Music Academy o ers wedding dance lessons designed for real couples, not performers. With a calm, intuitive approach, Corrie helps couples transform nerves into confidence and music into a deeply personal moment. Each dance is shaped around the couple’s song, personalities, and timeline creating a first dance that feels natural, meaningful, and unmistakably their own, and that's where your first dance becomes a moment you’ll never forget. We cha ed with Corrie Wade about wedding dance lessons and the magic behind them.

timeline. Whether it’s simple, playful, or quietly spectacular, the goal is a dance that feels natural and authentic, so when the music starts, they can relax and enjoy being together.

They’re for real people not just dancers . Most couples come in saying some version of, We don’t dance, or We’re nervous , and that’s completely normal. ou don’t need experience, rhythm, or confidence to begin, that’s what we build together. Some couples want something beautifully understated, others want fun, flair, or even a surprise element. The common thread is that they want to feel comfortable, connected, and proud when they step onto the floor.

d nce e do o o e

I offer many styles, but I often let the music lead the way. Music naturally suggests movement, timing, and mood. Sometimes couples arrive with a clear idea, and sometimes

the style reveals itself once we start working with the song. It becomes a very organic process rather than forcing a dance style onto the music we let the music shape the dance. n co e e e o n edd n on Absolutely and I encourage it. our song carries your story. Whether it’s a classic love song, something modern, or a little unconventional, working with music that matters to you makes the dance feel more meaningful. The choreography grows out of the song, not the other way around.

How many lessons do couples usually need?

There’s no set number. Some couples feel ready after just a few sessions, while others enjoy a longer creative process. Together, we design a lesson plan that suits your goals, availability, and comfort level. The aim is never to overwhelm, it’s to support you in feeling prepared and relaxed.

Weddings

Around a month or two before the wedding is ideal. That timing gives you space to learn, practise, and settle into the dance without pressure. That said, even with shorter timelines, we can still create something beautiful. It’s about meeting couples where they are.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes, all wedding dance lessons are private. This creates a relaxed, supportive environment where couples can laugh, make mistakes, and grow in confidence at their own pace. There’s no audience, no judgement, just time and space to enjoy the process together.

Do you work with other wedding dancers

Together, we design a lesson plan that suits your goals, availability, and comfort level. e aim is never to overwhelm, it’s to support you in feeling prepared and relaxed. too?

ery much so. In addition to first dances, I regularly work with father–daughter and mother–son dances, wedding party routines, and special group moments. I’m proudly LGBTQ+ friendly, and I tailor every experience to honour the people, relationships, and stories involved. Every love story deserves to be celebrated in a way that feels right for the couple.

After 25 years of doing this work, what still surprises you?

One theme comes up again and again - couples are surprised by how easy and fun the process is. They often arrive expecting stress or awkwardness, and instead they leave smiling, connected, and genuinely enjoying themselves. The experience of creating the dance together

becomes just as memorable as the dance on the day itself. That always delights me.

Wedding dance lessons are just one part of a much broader creative practice, what makes Corrie Wade Music Academy different?

We take a creative, non-traditional approach to music education for children, teens, and adults. Students are encouraged to play first, building confidence and musical instinct before focusing on reading or theory.

What results do you see from this approach?

Students progress quickly and develop real confidence and joy in playing. Music starts to feel natural rather than pressured. At the heart of it all is the belief that creativity is innate it just needs the right environment to unfold. o c n co e nd den find o more?

This year marks a remarkable milestone for the Coffs Harbour Women’s Health Centre as we celebrate 40 years of caring, supporting, and advocating for women’s health and wellbeing. What began in 1986 as a small, two-room service on Park Beach Road has grown into a cornerstone of health and community connection on the Mid North Coast. Did you know the Women’s Health Centre turns 40 this year?

Born from the passion and determination of local women campaigning for better health, safety, and reproductive services, the Centre was founded during a period of powerful grassroots activism. Within hours of opening, appointments were booked out for three months — a clear sign of both community need and community trust.

The Centre’s early decades were rich with community programs such as Tai Chi, meditation, relaxation classes and a much-loved carers’ program — all reinforcing its longstanding commitment to nurturing women’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Our feminist philosophy anchored in fairness, social justice and equality, has guided our belief that women deserve access to informed choices, respectful care, and a health service built by women, for women.

Four decades later, the Centre operated by regional based,

values led charity Health Voyage continues to uphold its founding values of equity, access, dignity, and compassion, delivering vital services including women’s health GP care, counselling, nursing, sexual and reproductive health, group programs, outreach services and specialist clinics such as the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Service.

We look forward to sharing our 40-year celebration throughout the year with our community and our service partners so keep an eye on our socials for updates and opportunities to get involved.

As we celebrate this significant anniversary, we honour the generations of women, who built, who run, and who continue to rely on this vital care. This celebration is not only a tribute to the past, but a commitment to the future: healthier people, stronger communities, and a vision of care for the next 40 years and beyond.

UNDERSTANDING NEGATIVE SELF-TALK: CAUSES, EFFECTS, AND STRATEGIES

Negative self-talk refers to the internal dialogue that is critical, pessimistic, and often self-defeating. It is something many people experience, impacting mental health, self-esteem, and overall wellbeing. Addressing negative self-talk is essential for building resilience, improving mental health, and enhancing your quality of life.

Negative self-talk often manifests as harsh, judgmental, and unrealistic thoughts about oneself. Common examples include statements like, “I’m not good enough,” “I always mess things up,” or “I’ll never succeed.” These thoughts can arise in response to daily stressors or significant life events and often perpetuate feelings of anxiety, depression, and low selfworth.

Causes of Negative Self-Talk

Negative self-talk often stems from past experiences. For instance, childhood criticism from parents, teachers, or peers can shape how we perceive ourselves. If a child frequently hears negative remarks, they may internalise these messages as truths, carrying them into adulthood.

Perfectionism is another common cause. Individuals with perfectionist tendencies often set unrealistically high standards for themselves. When they fail to meet these expectations, they may resort to negative self-talk. In today’s digital age, social media plays a

significant role. Constantly comparing oneself to the curated and idealised lives of others can lead to feelings of inadequacy.

Additionally, cognitive distortions, such as all-ornothing thinking or catastrophising, can amplify negative self-talk. These distorted thought patterns make it difficult to view situations objectively, further fuelling self-criticism.

Effects of Negative Self-Talk

The implications of negative self-talk are farreaching and may affect various aspects of life. It creates a vicious cycle where negative thoughts lead to emotional distress, which in turn fuels more negative thinking.

Negative self-talk may also hinder personal and professional growth. When individuals doubt themselves, they may feel less inclined to pursue goals or take risks, leading to missed opportunities and stagnation.

In relationships, negative self-perception may affect how individuals interact with others. They may withdraw socially or project their insecurities onto their relationships, resulting in conflicts and misunderstandings.

The effects of negative self-talk are not just emotional; they may also be physical. The mindbody connection is powerful, and persistent negativity may take a toll on physical health.

Strategies to Combat Negative Self-Talk

Awareness and Identification. Overcoming negative self-talk is recognising when it occurs. Keeping a journal to track negative thoughts can help identify patterns and triggers.

Challenge egative Thoughts. Once you have identified negative thoughts, challenge them by asking questions like: Is this thought based on facts or assumptions? Would I say this to a friend? What evidence do I have that contradicts this thought? Reframing these thoughts into more balanced and realistic perspectives may significantly reduce their power.

Practice Self-Compassion. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding. Instead of harsh self-criticism, practice self-affirmation and remind yourself that everyone makes mistakes.

Mindfulness and Meditation. Mindfulness practices may help you stay present and reduce rumination on negative thoughts. Techniques like meditation may cultivate a more positive and accepting mindset.

Seek Support. Talking to a therapist or counsellor can provide valuable tools and strategies for managing negative self-talk. egative self-talk can be a significant barrier to personal growth and well-being, but it does not have to define you. With time and effort, you can challenge negative thoughts, cultivate self-compassion, and pave the way for a more positive and fulfilling life.

Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

Reptile W

1Do I need a licence to own a snake in NSW, and how do I apply for one? Yes. In NSW, you must hold a current reptile licence to legally keep snakes. Applications are submitted via the NSW Government Environment and Heritage section online and you may need to provide details about the species, housing, and your experience.

2. What types of snakes are legal for private ownership, and which ones are prohibited? With the correct licence virtually all species of native Australian snakes are able to be kept. Non natives such as Corn snakes and Boa constrictors for example are illegal to keep.

3. Is there a difference between beginner, intermediate, and advanced reptile licences? Yes. Licences are tiered to match experience and risk. Beginner licences typically allow common non-venomous snakes. Intermediate and advanced licences may permit larger or more challenging species, with advanced licences sometimes including venomous reptiles.

4. Can children or families own a snake, and whose name must the licence be under? Yes, families can own a snake. While children may assist with the care and handling

SNAKE SENSE: OWNERSHIP & LICENSING Q&A

of the animal, this must always be under adult supervision, and the licence must be held in the name of someone aged 16 or older.

5. What responsibilities come with holding a reptile licence? Licence holders must ensure proper housing, hygiene, feeding, and welfare. They must prevent escapes, comply with rules, and follow all reporting requirements. This may include inspections by the authorities.

6. Are venomous snakes ever legal to own, and under what circumstances? Yes, but only under strict conditions with an advanced or specialised venomous snake licence. Holders need extensive experience, secure facilities, and must comply with rules and regulations.

7. What are the penalties for keeping an unlicensed or illegal snake? Penalties can include fines, seizure of animals, and in serious cases, criminal charges. Keeping prohibited species without a licence can carry significant legal consequences.

9. How often do licences need to be renewed, and what does renewal involve? Most licences are valid for 1–3 years. Renewal typically requires updating your details and confirming continued compliance.

11. Are there restrictions on buying, selling, or gifting snakes? Yes. You must comply with licensing laws and notify authorities if a snake changes ownership. Interstate transfers require permits.

12. What records or paperwork should licensed snake owners keep? Keep detailed records of acquisition, feeding, health checks, and any transfers. These records may be requested by authorities during inspections or licence renewal.

13. How does licensing help protect native wildlife and snake welfare? Licensing ensures snakes are kept responsibly, prevents illegal trade, and ensures welfare standards are met. It also protects native populations from poaching and habitat disruption.

14. What should I consider before deciding a snake is the right pet for me? Consider your experience, the species size, housing requirements, long-term commitment (snakes can live for long periods of time), and whether you can provide proper care safely.

15. Where can prospective owners find e e e o ce o c e a snake? Licensed breeders and reptile expos are your safest sources. Avoid online marketplaces or unverified sellers, as they may deal in illegal or poorly cared-for animals.

Why does

MINT MAKE WATER TASTE SO COLD?

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR SPORT AND EXERCISE SCIENCE

SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY

You’ve just cleaned your teeth, you’re feeling minty fresh and ready to climb into bed. You take a sip of water, but the water is icy cold, and your next breath feels cool and crisp.

WTricking the brain

hat has the toothpaste done to your mouth? And could this be a hack to help you feel cooler when you really need it?

Menthol, a natural compound that comes from mint plants, is the ingredient in toothpaste that creates the feeling of cold. Menthol activates TRPM receptors on nerve endings in your mouth, which are the same receptors responsible for sensing cold. So, menthol essentially tricks your brain into sensing cold, in the same way that chilli tricks your brain into sensing heat. It does so by binding to TRPM receptors and changing their shape, allowing calcium to enter and trigger a signal to the brain, which is interpreted as a sensation of cold. When you have a drink of water or take a

breath of air with menthol in your mouth, the menthol spreads all over and more receptors are activated, increasing its effect.

The receptors are now open and primed to sense cold, so any liquid or air that is somewhat cool will feel even colder than it really is.

Why is menthol in so many products?

Companies use this action of menthol to create another dimension to the flavour and feel of their products.

Menthol is added to toothpaste and chewing gum to create a cool refreshing feeling that signals “cleanliness”, and to cough drops to create the feeling of open airways. Menthol doesn’t physically cause decongestion it just enhances sensitivity and a sensation of coolness in the airways, which makes it feel like more air is passing through.

Menthol can cool the skin as well through the same receptors. That’s why menthol is commonly added to topical creams designed for pain relief.

Menthol’s cooling sensation can also act as a “counterirritant”, where the menthol activates pain receptors in the skin causing irritation, and then desensitises them, which can reduce the underlying pain. Studies have shown topical menthol can be an effective treatment for pain from muscle soreness, cancer treatment-related neuropathic pain and migraine.

Menthol as a sports supplement

The cooling effect of menthol might even be beneficial for exercise and sport. In one study, my colleagues and I found that a menthol mouth rinse reduced how hot runners felt and allowed them to run faster in a fivekilometre time trial in 33°C.

Interestingly, the menthol mouth rinse was more effective than drinking a slushie, which physically reduced body temperature, but didn’t make the runners feel cooler or run faster.

As such, how hot you feel may be more important than how hot you are at least for running performance.

The Australian Institute of Sport has categorised menthol as a group B sport

supplement, meaning it has “emerging and/ or mixed scientific support, deserving of consideration in specific populations or situations”.

Research has now shifted to adding menthol to energy gels. In one study, my colleagues and I tested energy gels with different menthol concentrations to determine the optimal amount to maximise the cooling effect. This could allow menthol to be more accessible during exercise and sport.

Interestingly, the menthol mouth rinse was more e ective than drinking a slushie, which physically reduced body temperature, but didn’t make the runners feel cooler or run faster.

implemented according to guidelines, and don’t provide an unfair advantage or violate the spirit of sport. So, menthol isn’t currently a banned substance in sports.

The use of menthol in products is likely going to become even more common in the future.

The next time you feel an unexpected cooling sensation from a food, drink or cream, the ingredients list will tell you if it’s menthol playing a trick on you.

The use of menthol in sport is controversial, because it might make a person feel cooler when exercising in the heat, and allow them to push beyond their thermal limits. In theory, this could increase the risk of overheating and exertional heat illness - a continuum of conditions from muscle cramps to heat exhaustion, to the life-threatening condition of heat stroke.

However, this hasn’t been an issue in the research published so far. An international consensus statement concluded that menthol supplements are safe when prepared and

Associate Professor Christopher Stevens is one of Australia’s leading young researchers in exercise and sport science having twice been named Exercise Sports Science Australia’s best young researcher. His research interests include improving all aspects of sports performance and specifically the areas of exercise physiology and thermoregulation. His current research projects investigate drinks, cooling strategies and training programs to improve performance in the heat.

NEW BEGINNINGS

The start of a new school year signifies new beginnings, new opportunities and high hopes for students and their families right across the Coffs Coast.

Heading back to the classroom was always an exciting time for me when I was at school.

I have many fond memories of anticipating lessons resuming, the school community coming back together and all that went with it - the smell and texture of the new books, the catchups with my mates about the summer holiday adventures we enjoyed, and that fresh-start feeling.

Right throughout my schooling - which I’m proud to say was right here on the Coffs Coast - I could not have wished for more caring or supportive teachers.

I will always be indebted to them for their guidance, mentoring and advice, and for teaching valuable lessons which helped prepare me for adult life.

Excellent teachers who are committed to, and passionate about education, are also guiding the new generation of Coffs Coast students whether they’re passing through the school gates for the first time or they’re completing

their schooling and embarking on the next chapter in their lives.

All students, regardless of where they live, deserve to have access to quality education, so it’s important to invest in improved education outcomes from childcare level right through schooling to vocational and tertiary learning. We know that affordable and quality education is a key driver to keeping families, and attracting new residents to regional NSW.

Education will always be a cornerstone of developing a progressive, innovative and prosperous community on the Coffs Coast and beyond.

That’s why I will always support our local teachers and our local schools in the vital roles they play in the lives of thousands of young people and their families across our beautiful region.

As students, teachers and staff return to school for 2026, I wish them every success for the year ahead.

May it be rewarding, enriching, and filled with many achievements by our school communities.

I’d also like to remind readers that the resumption of school also means school zones are back in force, and for good reason.

The 0km h speed limit in school zones helps to protect children on their way to and from school. The lower speed limit reduces the risk and potential severity of a crash.

Education will always be a cornerstone of developing a progressive, innovative and prosperous community on the Co s Coast and beyond.

School zone signs, dragon’s teeth road markings and flashing lights improve the visibility and driver

awareness of school zones. Please ensure you drive under the school zone speed limit when these zones are active.

Remember, increased fines and demerit points apply for certain school zone offences, while illegal use of mobile phones and speeding are among those included during double demerit periods.

To drivers and pedestrians, please put safety first around our schools.

Education Update

with SIMON DOYLE

Our school sits in a rich natural classroom, and exists on Gumbaynggirr Country. We are fortunate to have access to beaches, headlands, estuaries and forest pockets on the Coffs Coast. These beautiful and ancient outdoor areas provide daily opportunities for children to play, move and learn. When curriculum programs such as PDHPE are combined with unstructured play, sport and outdoor education experiences, students develop far more than fitness they grow social confidence, resilience, curiosity and a lifelong love of movement. The BDC Advantage contains a belief in providing opportunities to move with purpose through specialised PDHPE and sport programs and includes enabling exploratory movement in our Adventure Playground and learning through our Stage 1 Investigation Centre, kindy play area, gardens and agriculture classes.

What does outdoor learning give children?

Physical health and motor skills. Regular play, games and sport build strength, endurance, coordination and fine gross motor control. Running, climbing over rocks, playing football on a windy oval, these challenge the body in varied ways that a gym can’t replicate. The Adventure and Kindergarten Playground are a part of the amazing grounds on our school site.

Emotional resilience and wellbeing. Fresh air, challenge and movement reduce stress and boost mood. Outdoor tasks with manageable risk (scrambling over high ropes or learning to

PlAy, MOVE & EXPLORE

WHY SPORT, PLAY AND OUTDOOR EDUCATION ON THE COFFS COAST MATTER FOR GROWING AND LEARNING

paddle) teach students to assess risk, manage fear and celebrate success. Our Year 7 Outdoor Education Program provides challenges through choice with new friends early in Term 1.

Social and communication skills. Play and team sport require negotiation, leadership, turn-taking and empathy. Unstructured play often leads to creative problem solving and new friendships across age groups. Cognitive development and creativity. Nature stimulates curiosity. Outdoor lessons strengthen observation, spatial awareness and scientific thinking, children notice patterns in nature, estimate distances on the beach, or plan routes through bushland and how to overcome the challenge through choice such as navigating a water course or just being away from home for a few nights.

Environmental stewardship. Regular contact with local ecosystems, beaches, estuaries and native bush builds knowledge and care for places. This underpins responsible citizenry and sustainable behaviours.

How PDHPE ties into the outdoors.

PDHPE provides the ideal structure to harness outdoor experiences for learning outcomes. Through purposeful lessons we can -

- Practice movement skills and game strategies in PDHPE or sport using beach games, modified invasion or striking fielding activities on the oval.

- Deliver fitness ideas and conditioning sessions using local terrain (sprints on sand, circuit stations in playgrounds, gentle hill repeats).

- Explore personal, social and community health topics through real-life contexts sun safety on

the beach, nutrition for active days, and mental health strategies for stress and teamwork.

- Embed risk-management and decision-making into practical outdoor lessons (e.g., weather awareness, hydration, safe use of watercraft). Program ideas for our Coffs Coast setting. Bishop Druitt College’s belief in a rite of passage program from Kindergarten to Year 12 is built upon a framework of challenge by choice, a connection to Country and building community through these programs. The research behind being active and improving mental health is well known. As adults we should enjoy and maintain our own physical activity, and setting a positive example through physical activity can improve our connection with our children. Many achieve this through camping in the outdoors over the holidays or on weekends.

On the Coffs Coast we are privileged to have natural playgrounds on our doorstep. When our PDHPE programs, sport teams and everyday play make thoughtful use of those spaces, students become more confident, collaborative and curious learners who care for their environment. Let’s keep getting them outside, playing, exploring and discovering.

MATTERS Money

BSHOULD

uying new pieces of business equipment, plant, machinery or vehicles can be an expensive investment, but when a critical business asset is required, should you buy this item outright, or should you lease the item and pay for it in handy monthly instalments

Depending on your financial situation, it’s important to weigh up the pros and cons of buying, or opting for a leasing option.

Buying: the pros and cons:

Pro: It’s a tangible asset. When you buy an item, you own the item outright and it will appear on your balance sheet as one of your business assets. The cost of the asset can be claimed as depreciation over its effective life for tax purposes.

Pro: It’s yours for the life of the asset. Once you own the item, you have full use of the equipment for the duration of the life of the asset. If your financial circumstances change then you can sell the asset to free up the capital.

Con: It’s an expensive outlay. Paying for the item up-front is a large outlay for the business and will require you having the cash to cover this cost. Spending a large lump sum in this way may take cash away from other areas of the business, so you need to be sure that this purchase is the right decision and a sound investment.

YOU BUYORLEASE YOUR BUSINESS ASSETS?

Con: You may require extra funding. If you don’t have the liquid cash available to buy the item outright, you may need to take out a loan. Asset finance is available from funding providers but does tie you into a loan agreement that will add to your liabilities as a business, reducing your worth on the balance sheet.

Leasing: the pros and cons:

Pro: Leasing has a cheaper entry point. If the item you need to purchase has a large price tag, leasing allows you to make use of the asset without the cost of buying it in full. For start-ups and smaller businesses with minimal capital behind them, this can make leasing a very attractive option. You may not own the asset, but you can make use of it, and this may be the difference between the success or failure of your business.

Pro: You can spread the cost. There is still an associated cost of leasing, but you can spread the cost over a longer period, making it easier to find the necessary liquid cash to meet your lease payments. With this money saved, you can then invest in other areas of the business, helping you to expand, grow and bring in more customers and revenue.

Con: ou don’t own the asset. There are however different types of leasing agreements. Under a capital lease, you do own the asset (once you’ve paid if off), but if you opt for an operating lease, this is a more

short-term lease, and you won’t own the asset at the end of the contract. Ownership does have its advantages (including being able to sell off the asset if required) so it’s important to consider what kind of leasing agreement you’re entering into and what the advantages disadvantages may be.

Con: You may pay more in the long run. Most leasing agreements will attract additional costs and interest on your agreement, so you may well end up paying more than the market price for your asset in the long term. If you can cope with the higher cost, this is fine, but bear in mind that buying outright may have offered greater value.

Con: You may lose the use of the asset. If you can’t keep up your lease payments (due to poor cashflow for example) then the owner of the lease agreement may recall the asset. If this item is crucial to your business model, losing this key asset can have a profound impact on your ability to operate. In this respect, leasing is a riskier prospect, but also an easier option for businesses with less cash to splash.

Whether you opt to buy or lease your equipment, it isn’t always a straightforward decision to make. We can help you review your current financial position, assess your available cashflow and look at your regular cost base to decide whether buying or leasing is the right thing for your business.

When her Mum passed, Shelly inherited thousands of photographs and albums that revealed the true power of printed memories. Those simple, often overlooked snapshots told a story of a life deeply lived and loved, and they became the foundation of her why.

Today, Shelly photographs families, couples, and mamas with the intention of freezing fleeting moments, both messy and magical, so they can be held, shared, and cherished for generations to come. Her work is rooted in preserving life exactly as it is right now, turning ordinary moments into lasting legacies.

What services do you offer and what sets your team apart from others in the industry? We’re a small, locally owned, familyrun business, proudly part of the trusted Australian Novus Glass Franchise Network. We operate as a fully mobile service, coming to customers at home, work, or on a job site. Importantly, when you call us, you’ll speak to a real person (most likely me), not a call centre, not a chatbot, and not an automated phone system.

What are some of the most common glass repair or replacement jobs you’re called out for in the local area? Windscreen replacements, often starting as stone chips that develop into cracks. Highway driving, roadworks, gravel and dirt roads, lawn-mowing debris, and seasonal temperature changes all contribute. We recommend having chips checked early. Chip repairs aim to restore strength and integrity of the windscreen but don’t always remove the mark completely, which is something we explain upfront.

How does Novus Glass help c o e ee confiden nd looked after, particularly when

dealing with urgent repairs or unexpected damage?

Unexpected damage can be stressful, and we know it rarely happens at a convenient time, so our focus is on communication. Customers are rarely having a good day when they call us, so speaking with a real person who listens and explains options clearly goes a long way.

What role does quality workmanship and safety play in everything your team does? It's central to everything we do. Windscreens are critical safety components, so our technicians are licensed with over 10 years’ experience. We use Australianstandard glass and ensure replacements and “Advanced Driver Assistance Systems calibrations are completed accurately, with the workmanship backed by a nationwide warranty.

What advice would you give locals when it comes to maintaining their glass or knowing when it’s time for a repair versus a replacement?

Laine: We’d looked at other options, but when we heard The Shoreline was coming, we knew this was it. We didn’t want to miss out.

LAINE AND JIM DOWN RESIDENTS OF THE SHORELINE

Laine and Jim Down have been residents of The Shoreline for just over three years. With the upcoming opening of Watermark Apartments in April and a Community Open Day on 7 March, Laine and Jim share why they chose to make the move, and what life looks like now.

Jim: The maintenance had been getting beyond us. No more ladders, no more heavy gardening. It s a big relief.

Laine: Very much the same, just easier. We still play bowls, I play cards and belong to a book club. We walk the beach, and Jim still goes to the Surf Club.

Jim: There’s plenty happening here if you want it, but you don’t have to join in with everything.

Jim: Only that we wish we’d come sooner! You don’t know what’s ahead, and it’s so much easier to make the decision early.

Laine: They’re relieved. Both our kids say they’re so happy we’re here. It takes the worry away for them, knowing we’re safe and supported.

So far in January, our office has been extremely busy selling and renting homes. I expect this momentum to continue throughout 2026 with the Coffs Coast property market poised for another year of steady growth and strong lifestyle-driven demand. With interest rates forecast to remain neutral (subject to CPI data), population growth remaining robust and local infrastructure projects maturing, the region is expected to enter a phase of sustainable, confidence-led growth. Buyers, sellers and investors are approaching 2026 with renewed clarity and the Coffs Coast continues to cement its position as one of Australia’s most sought-after coastal destinations.

Key Market Expectations for 2026

• Interest rate stability creating momentum: With economists predicting rate stability following the reductions across 2025, affordability and borrowing capacity are expected to stabilise.

• Ongoing lifestyle migration: Relocators from capital cities and inland will remain a driving force, choosing the Coffs Coast for its lifestyle, beaches, schooling, airport connectivity and strong regional employment opportunities.

• Tight listings in blue-chip coastal pockets:

Suburbs such as Diggers Beach, Korora, Sapphire and Sawtell are expected to remain undersupplied, leading to strong competition and premium pricing for well-presented quality homes.

• High demand for renovated, turnkey homes: Buyers in 2026 will continue to favour modern, low maintenance and move-in-ready homes, driving strong interest in upgraded properties and newly completed builds.

• Prestige and coastal-view properties outperforming: Homes with ocean views, direct beach access, architectural features or proximity to the Jetty or Sawtell precincts are expected to see some of the region’s strongest price resilience and best sale results.

• Growth in downsizer and retiree demand: The ageing population, combined with relocators seeking lifestyle simplicity, is expected to accelerate demand for single-level luxury villas, boutique townhomes and high-quality apartments.

• Emerging strength in the sub-$900k segment: First-home buyers and young families are expected to play a larger role in 2026, particularly in central Coffs Harbour, Boambee East, Toormina and the northern growth corridor.

• Investors gradually returning: Improving yields, ongoing low vacancy rates and a more stable lending environment are expected to

attract long-term investors back into the market after several cautious years.

• Value-adding opportunity in older homes: Larger blocks and older-style properties will remain attractive for buyers seeking renovation potential or the possibility of secondary dwellings or granny flats.

• Infrastructure momentum supporting confidence: The ongoing Coffs Harbour Bypass progress, Jetty Foreshore Masterplan works and private commercial redevelopment continue to elevate the region’s long-term appeal and underpin property values.

Final Word

Overall, 2026 is shaping up as a year defined by stability, confidence and lifestyle-driven momentum for the Coffs Coast. Continued demand for quality homes, undersupply in prestige locations and the return of motivated buyers are set to support healthy market conditions. Whether upsizing, downsizing or investing, local knowledge and strategic advice will be key to maximising results in this evolving market.
