e Clitoverse crew are rewriting the script for women and gender-diverse artists on the Mid North Coast. WHAT BEGAN AS FESTIVAL CHAOS AMONG FRIENDS HAS BECOME ONE OF THE REGION’S MOST ELECTRIC, EMPOWERING, and community-driven forces in music culture.

hat was the moment or motivation that sparked the idea to create the Clitoverse? Honestly, Clitoverse started the same way most of our best ideas do: as a joke that got way out of hand. The very first version of the “Clitoverse” was just a doof stick we took to Rabbits Eat Lettuce. While we were there, we saw SOPHDEXX play for the first time and left the festival completely inspired. From that point, Clitoverse started to turn into a vision for something much bigger. We’ve been going to doofs and festivals together since we were sixteen, and no matter how much time passes, that love for music, community and chaos hasn’t faded one bit. We wanted to create a space that felt like us: a platform to play the kind of music we actually wanted to hear and an event we genuinely wanted to be at.

Over the years, we’ve realised we know how to have the best kind of fun together, so Clitoverse became an extension of that energy: a celebration of friendship, freedom and the sounds that move us.
For readers who might not know, how would you describe Clitoverse in your own words?
The Clitoverse is a creative collective and community, born out of friendship, music and a shared desire to see more women and gender-diverse artists front and centre. It is more than an event

platform. It is a movement that connects people through sound, creativity and empowerment.

We’ve all been part of the scene for years, and we wanted to create something that uplifts and celebrates female DJs and performers, while still keeping things fun, welcoming and accessible to everyone. The music industry can still be a tough space for women and gender-diverse artists. What kind of change are you hoping to drive through Clitoverse?

own events and creating their own opportunities. Whether we directly inspired them or not doesn’t matter to us; what matters is seeing more women front and centre, shaping the scene in their own way. That’s the kind of change we want to keep driving.
Can you tell us a bit about some of the incredible female artists, performers, and DJs you’ve worked with so far?

Our resident DJs are the heartbeat of the Clitoverse: THEMZ¥, RISSY ELLIOTT and K DIZZY Each of them is incredible in their own right, and it has been so special growing together, pushing ourselves and watching each other level up as artists and performers.

Festival lineups are still overwhelmingly male, and you always hear the same excuses: “There aren’t enough female artists”, “There are no female headliners in this genre”, “We book based on talent, not gender”, “Female artists don’t pull a big crowd”. The success of the Clitoverse proves that isn’t true. There are so many incredible women and gender-diverse DJs and performers out there, and you don’t need “big names” to sell tickets when the talent and energy are real.

We also owe a huge part of our origin story to SOPHDEXX If we hadn’t met her, the Clitoverse as it exists today might never have come to life. Every artist on our lineups is amazing. We are really intentional about who we book, and we’re constantly blown away by the talent, energy and generosity they bring to each show.
And the visual world of our events wouldn’t exist without Filthy Aliens, a phenomenal performance collective based in Bellingen who transform our spaces into living, breathing art. They don’t just perform, they make the Clitoverse come alive.

Continued over...

our goal is to create a platform that gives women the space, recognition and opportunities they might not otherwise receive, especially for those juggling families, motherhood and creative work.

Through the Clitoverse, our goal is to create a platform that gives women the space, recognition and opportunities they might not otherwise receive, especially for those juggling families, motherhood and creative work. Since we started, we’ve watched so many of the women we’ve booked go on to play major festivals and finally land those coveted main stage slots, and we’re really proud to have been a small part of that journey.

We’re also seeing more all-female and gender-diverse crews putting on their

What’s been the response from the local community on the Mid North Coast, and beyond, since launching?

The response since launching has been incredible. The Bellingen community has always been deeply supportive and creative, and they’ve embraced the Clitoverse from day one. There’s such a strong sense of connection here, and people genuinely want to see each other thrive.
That love and enthusiasm have helped us grow, attracting attention from artists and music lovers well beyond Bellingen, which has been amazing to see.
Your events are known for their fun themes, high energy and incredible visuals, what goes into creating these events and who plays a part in bringing it all together?
There is a whole crew behind every Clitoverse event. It is very much a team effort. The main people driving things are husband-and-

wife team Jemima and Alex, who handle everything from creative direction to logistics and making sure the night flows just right. Each event takes months of planning before anyone even steps onto the dance floor.
We also work extremely closely with Pete from Good Crew, who runs operations for us on the night as well as helps with the planning of the event. He keeps everything running smoothly behind the scenes, and we genuinely could not do this without him.

people even walk through the door.

at love and enthusiasm have helped us grow, attracting attention from artists and music lovers well beyond Bellingen, which has been amazing to see.
All of our artwork, posters and visual direction come from local tattoo artist and Clitoverse crew member Megan Ronald. Her artwork really captures the Clitoverse energy and sets the tone before
A big part of what we do is about keeping things local and supporting the Bellingen community, and the beautiful thing is that the community supports us right back. We work with GNS Audio for sound and Fulcrum Designs for staging and production which are both Bellingen based companies. We also have so many friends and locals jump in to help with setup and packdown. This year we also introduced The Sanctuary, a calm, grounding space run by Dusty West, promoting harm minimisation and giving people a place to rest and reset between dance floor moments. It is all about collaboration and

lifting up the talented people around us; everyone brings their own magic, and that is what makes each event feel so alive.
What’s been your most memorable Clitoverse moment so far?
Our most memorable Clitoverse moment has to be seeing our last Welcome to the Jungle event come to life. The Tiger Stage was a vision we’d been dreaming up for a while, and finally seeing it in full swing was surreal.
But it wasn’t just the stage. It was the heaving dance floor, the smiles on everyone’s faces and the pure love of the music. That’s exactly why we do what we do: creating spaces where people can connect, celebrate and feel completely free.
Looking ahead, what’s next for Clitoverse? Any exciting projects, collaborations, or events in the works?
Event planning for us basically starts the moment one party finishes. We are always dreaming up the next Clitoverse experience and thinking about how we can make it bigger, better and more fun, while still feeling like “us”.
You can catch us at the Bellingen Brewery on the 26th of December for a smaller Clitoverse takeover, which will be a fun, more intimate taste of what we do.

Looking further ahead, we are hoping to bring in some grant funding to help us keep growing. All of our events so far have been

run purely off ticket sales, with every cent reinvested straight back into the shows. Clitoverse is non-profit, and as our events grow, so do the risks, and some of those are now bigger than we can comfortably carry on our own.

spaces for our community,

Support through grants would allow us to keep creating safe, wild, joy-filled spaces for our community, while expanding in a way that is sustainable and still true to the heart of what we do.

Finally, how can people get involved, whether as artists, volunteers, or audience members, and join the Clitoverse community?

The best way to get involved is to come to our events and meet us in person. We really want to connect with people directly, whether you’re an artist, a volunteer, or someone who just wants to be part of the Clitoverse community.

We’re not big on getting submissions or links sent online. We want to meet you, feel your energy and see what you bring to the crew. That’s how the magic really starts. Thank you all.

like she lives; vibrantly, intuitively and with a whole lot of heart. Fresh from exploring the country’s wildest colourscapes, she’s back in the studio turning Australia’s striking expressive work yet.

i Ella. Your work is known for its joyful energy and vibrant personality, how would you describe your artistic style in your own words?
I always gravitate to abstract art because I feel like it reflects my personality the best. It's free, it's fun and you never know what's going to happen. Recently I have incorporated my abstract expression with some realism elements including longboarding surfing. I feel this is a true reflection of my personality and lifestyle.
You’ve just returned from travelling around Australia. What moments, landscapes or experiences from that trip have influenced your latest pieces?
The colours of the landscapes while travelling have blown my mind. Having grown up in Coffs Harbour where the forest meets the sea it was a very different perspective seeing dry desert plains meet the ocean and the colours that were so bright and beautiful. A favourite place for us was Francois Peron National Park in WA where there was deep orange sand that met white sand and turquoise waters. The contrast was just incredible and it really felt like you were in another place entirely. It made me inspired to be more bold in my colour choices and also that everything can change and you can adapt. What does your creative process look like from the first spark to the final brushstroke?
When I feel the pull of inspiration I start by finding the canvas size I want to bring that vision out on. Usually for me it's easier on a larger canvas but sometimes it's small depending on the pull. Once I put a background colour down I choose a few colours I want to create with, so that I'm not overwhelming myself with too many colours

Once I put a background colour down I choose a few colours I want to create with, so that I’m not overwhelming myself with too many colours that can o en end up chaotic.
that can often end up chaotic. Then, I start painting the vision I see in my head. I use a heavily textured acrylic so it creates a beautiful texture but then its the balance of getting some thin layers happening and different strokes. The painting is usually finished when I feel that if I keep on doing touch ups I'm going to ruin the whole entire thing. Continued over...

Your colour palettes are bold, playful and uplifting. How do you approach choosing colours for a new piece?
I just look at lots of different photos for inspo on colour combinations and save them so I can refer back. It's a juggle between getting the really bright fluoro pinks to balance out with some mild colours. Texture plays a part in all this too. It’s like a dance, you move in the way that feels best and if you slip up, you learn, but you always keep dancing. Generally though, I'll choose one bright colour as the main character and then a complementary colour and go from there. The trick is not having too many colours going on.
Abstract art invites personal interpretation. What’s the most memorable reaction someone has had to one of your artworks?
I'll always remember when I first started out. My sister came over to my studio and she

Texture plays a part in all this too. It’s like a dance, you move in the way that feels best and if you slip up, you learn, but you always keep dancing.
instantly fell in love with an artwork I had called ‘a stream in the desert’. I think I remember her crying as I read her the meaning of it and she was so excited about it. I think after that I realised how much power art has, and how necessary it is for our healing, joy and creative energy.
The Mid North Coast has a strong creative community. How has living here shaped you as an artist?
I started my art journey here as a kid in the school system with the best, encouraging art teacher. He helped me have the confidence to experiment and use as much paint as I wanted which helped me fall in love with abstract art. The art room became a place of safety, expression and passion for me and I truly felt
at home amongst the mess and paint. I think if I didn't have that backing at such a fundamental age it would have been a lot harder finding my style as an adult now. Living around a strong creative community now is so encouraging and inspiring as an artist and I have loved integrating back into that community after travelling.
Every artist has their own rituals. Do you have any must-have tools, habits or studio quirks that help you get into the creative zone?
I always make sure I journal and get all the junk out of my system (read ‘We Need Your Art by Amie McNee).
For me, being in nature is a really great way

for me to get back into my creative zone if I'm feeling stuck. I have loved being back in Coffs harbour for all the different varieties of nature I can immerse myself in, like the beach or the rivers out west.

Invest in good quality art supplies and they will love you back. check the floor for wet paint before you walk through your entire house with itoops!
I also have a practice of creating ‘bad art’ in my art journal. A place where no one will see it and it’s just for me to play and experiment without any rules or pressure. I believe this is such an important part of the creative process and it really helps me to be free on the canvas after I have got all my stuff out.
I find trips to the art store inspiring, visiting galleries, bookshops or going to a gig. Anything that's creative can be inspiring for my art.
Always

Looking back at your artistic journey so far, what have been the biggest lessons you’ve learned?
When stretching a canvas, do it properly the first time. Choosing a varnish that isn’t going to wreck your artwork is crucial (I learnt this the hard way). Invest in good quality art supplies and they will love you back. Always check the floor for wet paint before you walk through your entire house with it - oops! Try not to compare your early progress as an artist to others who have been practising for a lot longer than you. Art is a slow and long game. What are you currently working on, any new collections, exhibitions or creative

projects on the horizon?

I’m currently working on a collection of abstract art that combines my love for longboarding, and so far it has been really fun to create and I've had some great feedback. Lastly, where can people view your latest work, follow your process, or get in touch?
You can view my artworks in person: At Tallow and Tide at the new Coda building, and also at T&T Clean Surf, Moonee Beach. You can also follow me on instagram for my art process and behind the scenes @ella. janeart or visit my website ellarathbone.com Thanks Ella.

Bishop Drui College student Milla Adamson has made local golfing history as the youngest ever Bonville Golf Club Champion. WITH A CALM MINDSET, FIERCE DETERMINATION, AND BIG DREAMS OF ONE DAY COMPETING ON THE LPGA TOUR, Milla is proving that hard work and passion can drive success well beyond her years.

i Milla. Congratulations!
How does it feel to be crowned the youngest ever Bonville Golf Club Champion? Can you take us through what those two days of competition were like for you?
Thank you! It feels amazing. I am so proud to be the youngest champion. The two days were mentally tough but really exciting. I went in with a winning mindset, just focused on staying calm, playing my best, and finishing strong.
You played incredibly consistent golf across both rounds. What was going through your mind as you realised you were in contention for the title?
I was just trying to stay focused and not get ahead of myself. I knew I was playing well, so I stuck to my routine and took it one shot at a time.
This win marks the result of a lot of hard work and dedication. What does your training routine look like week-toweek?
I usually practice six days a week. Working on my swing, short game, and putting. I also play a few rounds each week. On top of golf practice, I do strength and conditioning at the gym to stay strong and fit.
When did you first discover the game and what is it about golf that got you hooked?
I first picked up golf when I was seven years old, starting out in the youth golf squad at Coffs Harbour Golf Club. I was drawn to the game because I love the challenge, travelling to tournaments, and meeting new people. Golf courses are also just a nice environment to enjoy. Aside from that I’m very competitive - so I love trying to improve my scores.
The Bishop Druitt College High
Performance Program and Golf Academy seem to have played a big role in your journey. How have they helped you grow as both an athlete and a student?
They’ve helped me so much. The program gives me great support to balance school and golf, and it’s taught me discipline, focus, and how to manage my time better as both a student and an athlete. The High Performance Program provides strength and conditioning sessions at school along with support around nutrition, athlete education, and mental fitness.
The Golf Academy is also a fantastic program for aspiring golfers allowing opportunities to practice and play golf each week.
Your mentor, Christine Clarke, and your coaches have clearly been strong influences. What’s the best piece of advice they’ve given you?
important has that network been in helping you chase your goals?
They’ve been super important throughout my golf journey. My family is always there for me, supporting me at every event and keeping me motivated. Guzman Y Gomez has sponsored my travel, equipment, and training - which has been amazing, allowing me opportunities to develop my game. Their support means a lot and helps me keep doing what I love. Bishop Druitt College has created an environment that balances my studies with training and competitions, which I’m really grateful for.
I first picked up golf when I was seven years old, starting out in the youth golf squad at Co s Harbour Golf Club. I was drawn to the game because I love the challenge, travelling to tournaments, and meeting new people.
There are a lot of rules for golf which Christine has helped me to understand along with other course management advice.
My coach, Jai McBride, is developing my technical skills and bringing out the best in my game through live practices and video coaching. He is always available to provide advice which helps me prepare for competitions away from home.
The best advice has been to stay focused on what I can control like my preparation, attitude, and effort. Everyone’s golf journey is different so my trick is to just enjoy my own.
You’ve also had amazing support from your family, school, and sponsors. How
Looking back on the past year, what are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned, about golf and about yourself?
Golf has taught me to stay calm under pressure and not let one bad shot or round affect me. I’ve learned to stay patient and keep believing in myself, no matter what happens.
What are your next goals? Are there particular tournaments or milestones you’ve got your sights set on for the future?
I will continue to compete in the Jack Newton Junior Golf events throughout NSW and aim to make the NSW State Team. Next year I will train to compete in some bigger amateur golf tournaments. I’m focused on improving my game and taking every opportunity to challenge myself along the way.
My long term goal is to earn a scholarship to play college golf and study in America, and go on to compete on the LPGA Tour.
Thanks Milla.

It’s a proud moment for Rivers Dance Centre as two 14-year-olds, Pearl Pisk and Baden Sully, earn acceptance into the prestigious Queensland Ballet. We sat down with Principal Jade Robinson and the young dancers to reflect on their journeys, their ambitions, and the studio community that helped shape them.
Hi Jade. Having not one but two 14-yearold students accepted into the Queensland Ballet is an incredible achievement! How did you feel when you heard the news?

I was absolutely thrilled! Hearing that not just one but TWO of our students were accepted made me quite emotional. It is a real testament to their dedication and love for dance. I feel so proud of everything they have put in and it really solidifies, as teachers, this is why we do what we do.
What do Pearl and Baden’s successes say about the level of dedication and training happening at Rivers Dance Studio?
At Rivers, we really value strong foundations, artistry and work ethic.

We hold so much focus and heart in our studio, and it’s beautiful to see it recognised on such a level. Pearl and Baden have taken every class correction, and challenge seriously, and that is what sets them apart.
We will be proudly celebrating 40 years of Rivers in 2026! 40 years is a testament to our standards and the trust our community places in us. We’re gearing up for a huge year with students and families from our past, present and future.

You’ve watched them grow and evolve as dancers over the years, what has their journey been like from your perspective? It’s been incredible to watch them transform into confident and expressive dancers. Looking back on photos recently I cannot believe how fast they have

grown. They support each other and have created such beautiful, long-lasting friendships. This year, seeing Baden as ‘Peter Pan’ and Pearl as ‘Tinkerbell’ in our end-of-year production at Bellingen Memorial Hall feels like the perfect reflection of who they’ve become as dancers - imaginative, fearless, and full of joy.
Moments like this must be so rewarding for you as a teacher. What does it mean to see your students take this next big step?
It means everything. As teachers, we pour so much into our students, hoping to give them the tools and confidence to chase their dreams. Seeing them take that leap - quite literally - into the next chapter of their training is indescribably rewarding. Thanks Jade.

Hi Pearl and Baden, congratulations to both of you! Can you tell us what it felt like to find out you’d been accepted into the Queensland Ballet?

What motivates you to keep pushing and improving as dancers?

Pearl: I was absolutely shocked and could hardly believe it was real. It’s something I have worked so hard for and dreamt of for so long, I am so overjoyed.
You’ve both been dancing at Rivers since you were very little, what do you love most about training there?
Baden: I’ve had the absolute best time at Rivers. The training has challenged me in all the right ways. From the teachers who refine my technique to the ones who help me discover and define my own style as a dancer, I’ve built an authentic relationship with each of them. with DUANE ROY WINEMAKER AT GLANDORE AND CO-OWNER OF BAR QUE SERA
“No thanks, I don’t like Chardonnay.”
t’s a phrase I hear often at the cellar door, and I suspect many of you have said, or heard something similar. What may surprise you, however, is how often those same people later walk out with a bottle, sometimes several, of the very wine they believed they disliked.
As creatures of habit, many of us instinctively avoid wines we think we don’t enjoy. If you’re convinced you dislike a style, you’re unlikely to reach for it at a bottle shop or order it at a bar. However, a cellar door or tasting room offers a rare opportunity: a moment to reset your expectations, empty your glass (and perhaps your assumptions) and approach a wine with fresh curiosity.
One of the great joys of wine is its diversity. A Barossa Shiraz is typically rich, bold, and generous in fruit, while a Hunter Valley Shiraz tends to be lighter in body, bright with fruit, and sometimes
touched with savoury complexity. They share a varietal name but express themselves entirely differently thanks to variations in soil, topography, climate, and the choices made by the winemaker.
There is no offence taken if a wine isn’t to your taste; tip it out and move on. What is helpful is sharing what you liked or didn’t like with the person pouring. In most cases, they can offer insight into why the wine tastes the way it does and help you better understand what to look for next time you choose a bottle. Which brings us back to chardonnay. Many visitors confidently state that “nobody drinks it anymore” or “chardonnay is out of fashion” yet, Australian consumption of chablis (chardonnay by another name) has nearly tripled over the past decade.
Perhaps the glass is only empty until we choose to fill it again.

After more than two decades of reinvention, resilience, and unmistakable chemistry, COG ARE STILL WALKING THE LINE WITH POWER AND PURPOSE. BEFORE THEY HIT THE HOEY MOEY STAGE ON SUNDAY 21 DECEMBER, Lucius Borich opens up about fresh music, and the energy that keeps the band moving forward.

og has had an incredible multi-decade journey. How does it feel to still be touring, creating, and connecting with fans after all these years?
All things considered, it’s a miracle. You don’t know what you’re going to get or what’s down the road when you get into this industry. I mean, you have a projection of what you’d like to do, and intentions, and then there’s all sorts of challenges. Things come along, it breaks up, put it back together, kind of bakes it again in a different way and then all of a sudden you find yourself still going, still enjoying it, and you still have something in common with the other guys in the band to keep producing music. As you get older, obviously you have more responsibilities, families, businesses, and it’s hard to keep all that stuff in some type of working order. First and foremost though, Flynn and Luca are brothers and I’ve grown up with them, so we’ve definitely got a family orientated kind of vibe as well, which I think helps keep a band together. To be 25 years in and still people are showing up for us, we don’t take that for granted at all, and I guess we feel, to some degree, that we did things right to start with and built good foundations.
You’ve recently released “Walk The Line,” the band’s first new music since 2019. What does this track represent for you personally?
Walk The Line really represents us finding the time to get back together and still feel the music in a genuine way. For us, the vibe is everything, if we can all resonate with a song and feel in sync, then we know it’s something worth sharing. As it’s been quite a while since our last release, finally putting another track out feels a bit like a small miracle. Being self-funded and independent means the process can be slow and sometimes a bit laborious, but you can only do what you can do.
What’s also cool is that the song has its own feel again. We’ve never tried to stick tightly to one genre; we’ve always liked having a wider lens, and our fans expect that from us. To release something slightly different, yet still very much in the COG sound, feels fantastic, and it gives us the confidence to keep progressing.
Cog’s live reputation is legendary. What can fans expect from the gig in Coffs Harbour?
For the Coffs Harbour show, we’ve been toying with some of the older material, songs we haven’t played in two or three years. We’ve got a big catalogue now, so we can mix and match, bring back some favourites, and throw in a few surprises, and of course, we’ll be playing the new track, which is pretty special for us. It wasn’t originally written in a room together; it came together in fragments, with parts being shared around. We only started playing it properly in a room about six weeks ago, so getting it to feel right live has been a huge relief, and it feels really good. We’ve named the tour Walk The Line, and even though we haven’t played for a while, people can expect the full COG experience. We’ve always been pretty minimalistic, no big bells and whistles; just the songs, played as well as we possibly can. You’re sharing the Coffs stage with local legends Flying Giants. What do you enjoy about performing alongside local talent when you visit regional centres?
Fans are always curious, what’s next for you guys? Is there more new music on the horizon, or are you taking things one step at a time?
Yeah, we definitely take things one step at a time, but the intention is absolutely to keep writing. I run Key Sound Studios in Byron Bay, so having that space makes it easier for us to record and produce new music in a way the budget allows. We’re always jamming, always coming up with parts, and everyone’s in a good frame of mind creatively. The challenge, of course, is time. We’re all fathers and family men now, so getting together can be tough and things take a lot longer than they used to.
For the Coffs Harbour show, we’ve been toying with some of the older material, songs we haven’t played in two or three years. We’ve got a big catalogue now, so we can mix and match, bring back some favourites, and throw in a few surprises.
It’s always great when we visit a town and can help give a local band a bit of a leg up. We remember what it was like starting out, having bigger acts put us in front of new audiences made a huge difference, so it feels good to pass that on. Supporting local artists is important to us, and giving them proper stage time, a solid PA, and a decent light show can really help them grow into the kind of shows they want to play.
We’ve always enjoyed mixing up our support acts too; it doesn’t have to be a band that sounds like COG. Over the years we’ve had everything from dub and electronic acts to heavy or more progressive bands. We like a night that feels multi-faceted, not one single style from start to finish.
Flying Giants are a good band who’ve put in the work and earned their place. They’re more than worthy. They deserve a run, and we’re stoked to have them on the bill.

Finances play a big part too. Allocating resources between real-life bills and making art isn’t always simple, and that’s a huge part of the narrative behind Walk The Line. It’s frustrating at times, but the intention is there. We want to keep pushing, keep writing, and keep producing music whenever we can.
Looking ahead to the Coffs Harbour show, what are you personally most excited about?
I’m really excited to just get out and about again. I spend so much time in the studio that it can feel like Groundhog Day, even though I love that lifestyle and created it for myself. Touring feels a bit like a working holiday; you get to travel, see people you haven’t seen for ages, and play in new venues.
What I look forward to most is the energy of being on the road with the band. Cog is always a ball of laughs. Sure, things go wrong, someone gets sick, something breaks, a flight gets cancelled, but the fun outweighs everything. Catching up with our crew and spending real time together is just good for the soul. My smile lines are because of Cog. Thanks Lucius.

IFresh o years of writing and recording, e Temper Trap are stepping back into the spotlight with a renewed energy, and Co s Harbour will be one of the first to experience it. Ahead of their intimate Je y Beach House show on January 3rd, guitarist Joseph Greer shares why the band feels more creative, connected and excited than ever.

t’s been a while since fans on the Mid North Coast have had the chance to see you live, how does it feel to be bringing your music to a place like Coffs Harbour?

We’ve been working on new music for the past few years and it’s finally starting to be released. It’s exciting to hit the stage again with fresh energy and a bunch of new songs we’re really proud of. We want as many people as possible to experience that.
The Jetty Beach House is a pretty stunning spot for a gig. What can we expect from this show?

The new songs are blending in really well with the older tracks, so you can expect a strong mix of material with a lot of energy from a band that’s feeling reinvigorated.

You’ve played massive international festivals and iconic venues around the world, what’s the appeal of these more intimate, regional shows for you?

Small shows always feel more intimate and exciting. You can feel the audience’s

energy directly, which sometimes gets lost in larger venues.
How would you describe where The Temper Trap is at musically in 2025?

We feel like we’re in the most creative, harmonious, and happy place we’ve ever been. Making this album has been a joy, and playing the new songs live has been a natural extension of that feeling.

You’ve built a global following, and travelled the world with your music. What have been some of the stand out moments for you guys?

A new song called “These Arms” has been getting a surprisingly strong reaction from audiences. Listen out for it at this gig and tell us what you think.
When fans leave your show at The Jetty Beach House, what do you hope they’ll feel or take away from the experience?

We’ve been away for a while, working on something we’re incredibly proud of. We feel like we have something to prove, and we want these new songs to stand shoulder to shoulder with the ones we’ve released in the past. I hope people leave the show feeling the same.
Thanks Joseph.

Phil Grant, aka DJ IBEXX has spent years building artists, booking shows, and navigating THE EVER-EVOLVING WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT, AND HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT IT TAKES TO BREAK THROUGH. HE’S NOW BRINGING THAT KNOWLEDGE HOME WITH THE LAUNCH OF QUE POINT DJ ACADEMY, a new space designed to empower aspiring DJs and strengthen the region’s creative community.

Hi Phil. You run Back Once Again Creative Artist Management, how has running an artist booking and events agency shaped your understanding of what it takes to succeed in the entertainment industry?
Running Back Once Again Creative Artist Management has provided me with a multifaceted perspective on the entertainment industry, particularly in terms of what it takes to succeed. Here are some key insights I've gained and even after all this time, I’m always learning, after 2 decades in the scene it never ends. The entertainment industry thrives on relationships. Building a strong network of contacts, including venues, promoters, other artists and industry professionals, is crucial. Success often hinges on who you know and how well you maintain those relationships. Artist development success in the entertainment industry isn't just about

landing gigs; it's about developing artists' careers. This includes helping them hone their craft, building their brand and guiding their career trajectory. A huge part of that is understanding the market; knowing your audience and the current market trends is vital. This includes understanding what types of events are popular, what genres of music are in demand and how to position your artists to meet those demands.
You’ve got an exciting new project in the works! What inspired you to launch Que Point DJ Academy and what do you hope to achieve with the school?
The inspiration to launch Que Point DJ Academy comes from a passion for education, identifying a gap in the market for comprehensive DJ programs on the MId North Coast, the evolving nature of the industry and a desire to build a supportive community. The school aims to empower aspiring DJs by offering a realistic curriculum that covers technical skills, music production and business management. It will leverage industry connections to provide students with real world opportunities and encourage innovation and creativity. The school is committed to diversity and inclusion, striving to create a welcoming environment for all students. The ultimate goal is to have a long term impact on the DJ community by producing well-rounded DJs who contribute positively and inspire future generations. This being only one element to an industry with endless employment opportunities, that lead into staging, sound production and so much more. How important are industry connections in helping young DJs break through, and how do you plan to open those doors for your students?

Over the past 5 years I’ve met some really awesome people in the industry up here who have helped me navigate the scene, been supportive and have had the joy of working with. Industry connections are crucial for young DJs to break through, offering access to gigs, mentorship, and other opportunities. To help students, Que Point DJ Academy
will invite industry professionals as guest lecturers along with mentors, facilitate internships, work placements, organise networking events/showcases and use existing connections to secure students' first gigs and collaborations. The aim is to bridge the gap between education with the professional world, supporting students in their career development within the competitive DJ industry. Que Point DJ Academy will offer ongoing support to all its students beyond the completion of the course, which automatically places them on Back Once Again Creative Artist Management booking agency. Que Point DJ Academy, have already trialed the curriculum, and it has paid off. The event ‘Full House’, put on by DJ Madspin Baby and iBexx, was a success, even the venue booker DJ Dangerwaves was impressed. That was only achieved because the student wanted the opportunity and they saw the end goal. Having said that, we offered plenty of support to that student, and those results are what Que Point DJ Academy wants to deliver to all students.

will learn foundational skills, while those with experience can refine their techniques and explore advanced topics. The key to thriving in this environment is a genuine love for music and a commitment to the learning process. What support has Que Point DJ Academy got from the community, and who are they?
Que Point DJ Academy will invite industry professionals as guest lecturers along with mentors, facilitate internships, work placements, organise networking events/ showcases and use existing connections to secure students’ first gigs and collaborations.
For people curious about Que Point DJ Academy, what kind of person would thrive in this environment? Do they need prior experience, or just a passion for music?
The ideal candidate for the Que Point DJ Alliance Academy is anyone with a passion for music, curiosity to learn, creativity, dedication, openness to feedback, a collaborative spirit, and adaptability. Prior experience is not required; the school accommodates both beginners and intermediate DJs. Beginners

Que Point DJ Academy has garnered extensive community support from a diverse group of committed local artists to its success. A strong network of industry professionals including established DJs like DJ Dangerwaves, booker for The Federal Hotel Bellingen, R-JAY, the booker at The Coast Hotel, George Finau, booker of the Coffs Yacht Club and Phil Grant, booker for Aanuka Beach House and The Jetty Pavillion) will become host venues for course completed students to play live within their respective genres. Jodi Taylor from Laneway Studio 37, Lizzy Rutten from Grow The Music will also be great alliances for the youth of the region through their respected community organisations and have welcomed the idea with great optimism. Additionally, DJ Prozac, DJ Madspin Baby, and R-JAY will act as mentors and tutors, delivering specialized aspects of the course within the Que Point DJ Academy. This comprehensive backing ensures that Que Point DJ Academy will offer a well-rounded and enriching educational experience for aspiring DJs. Where can we find out more or get in touch?

HTurning their Christmas budget into something far more meaningful, We Are Coast have transformed the season of giving into a powerful creative boost for local young people. is year, Jena Hacke and her team are rallying the community to help deliver hundreds of art-filled gi s, and spark inspiration where it’s needed most.
i Jena. Last year you launched the very first Creative Christmas Gift Drive, can you tell us how the idea came about and what inspired it?
Historically, we’d do the typical agency thing and send our clients various Christmas gift hampers… then I started thinking outside the box for a more meaningful way to use our Christmas budget. I realised we could focus that energy on something that could make a real difference.
After that, we decided to use that Christmas budget to make a lump-sum donation to local charities. This was great, but we eventually found a way to connect that same premise to something closer to home for us as a Creative Agency… so in 2024, Coast’s Creative Christmas Drive was born!
Why did you choose to focus specifically on
creative gifts like art supplies rather than traditional Christmas presents?
Here at We Are Coast, we’ve always been really involved and passionate about providing opportunities for local youth.
We dedicate as much time as we can to mentoring work experience kids and design students and to speaking at local careers days. This is a massive part of our ethos as an agency; we want to build up the next generation of creatives and help them get a start in the creative industry which can sometimes be difficult in a regional town.
is is a massive part of our ethos as an agency; we want to build up the next generation of creatives and help them get a start in the creative industry, which can sometimes be di cult in a regional town.
The idea of focusing on creative gifts connects to this – it’s another way we aim to spark creativity in tomorrow’s innovators. What kind of impact did it have last year, both for the young people who received the gifts and for your team at Coast?
Last year, we had hoped to make a little difference in some children’s lives. What we actually discovered was a fantastic community of people who deeply cared for our local youth and understood and appreciated the power of creativity.
Because of this, we were able to deliver nearly 50 creative gifts to Groundworks Youth &

Family Hub, who shared stories of young people lighting up as they unwrapped them. For many of these kids and teens, these simple art supplies become tools for healing, hope, and selfdiscovery.

For myself and my team here at Coast, we felt a wonderful sense of pride! It was really cool to see how putting our collective efforts behind something could exceed our intentions and make such a difference.
You mentioned that Coast matched every donation received, that’s such a generous initiative. Why was it important for you to make that commitment?
For sure. Last year we matched every gift and this year we got the party started with an initial 30 creative gift sets. It’s about putting our money where our mouth is and inspiring more people to get involved!
This year you’re hoping to make an even bigger impact. What’s different about the 2025 drive, and how are you planning to grow it?
This year we had a vision to make it even bigger than last! We invited some of our clients and local businesses to get on board as sponsors from the very beginning. Over the span of two days, we had twelve awesome businesses take us up on the offer, which just completely blew us away!

It’s cool to see each of these businesses (many of which are in creative industries as well) make this amazing decision to put their Christmas budget to something with more meaning and impact. They’ve each funded a 10-pack of creative gifts and are helping us promote the initiative.
With the incredible support of our sponsors, we are now really close to reaching our goal of 200 art supply gifts for 200 young creators!
Shout out to our 2025 sponsors: Stoka Coffee, The Town Padel, The Jetty Pavilion, Eric & Deb’s Ice-Creamery, SLR Productions, Hello Coco Studio, North Beach General Store, Embark Renovations, NDA Media, Pretty Suite Coffs Coast, Venus Tattoo Collective, and Coastal Commercial Bookkeeping.
You’ve partnered with Groundworks Youth & Community Hub again this year, as well as Headspace Coffs and Coffs Neighbourhood Centre. What makes them such meaningful partners for this project?
We wanted to focus our energy on supporting the young people of the Coffs Coast, and each organisation was chosen intentionally for their fantastic work supporting youth facing homelessness, family violence, and mental health challenges. They are just a few of the many incredible organisations making a difference right here on the Coffs Coast, and we are grateful to have them on board for our
Christmas Drive.
How can people or businesses contribute, donate supplies or support financially?
Now that our sponsorships are full, it’s over to the community. Our tree is up, and we are now accepting donations of new, unused art supplies. The gifts will support three key groups: Junior Creators (5-10), Young Artists (11-17), and Emerging Creatives (18-24). Some of the things already under the tree include art diaries, colouring books, markers, paints, canvases, and art & craft kits.
Drop off your unwrapped gifts at our studio until December 12! Our team is here Tuesday to Friday, 9am – 4pm – building brands, creating websites… and wrapping presents!
You can also make a virtual donation of $25 or $50 via our website if this is more convenient for you. We Are Coast Studio: 2/11 Murdock Street, Coffs Harbour.
Where can we find out more or get in touch?
You can head to our socials @wearecoast. agency to stay up to date on all the Christmas Drive info, or check out the blog section of our website for more information wearecoast.com.au.

What’s one local species people misunderstand most? The Redbellied Black snake. People see its glossy black body and red belly and immediately assume it’s aggressive or deadly. In fact, it’s a very shy snake and would rather avoid any sort of confrontation by getting out of the way. What are the most common myths or fears people have about this species? That it’ll chase you or strike for no reason. As stated previously, they’re shy and will move off quietly if given the chance. People also assume all snakes are dangerous. That’s far from the truth. How do reptiles contribute to pest control or ecosystem health? Snakes are the masters when it comes to pest control. Red-bellied Black Snakes eat rodents, frogs, and even other snakes, which keeps the balance in check. Dragon lizards, skinks and geckos thrive on insects. Without them, pests and rodents could spiral out of control.
What happens when reptile populations decline in an area? Rodent numbers can increase rapidly, leading to crop damage, pressure on native species etc. Frog populations may also become unstable without natural reptile predators.
What’s something surprising about its personality or habits that most people don’t know? They’re excellent swimmers and love hanging around creeks and wetlands. And despite their scary reputation, they’re very relaxed if left alone. They’re more scared of us then we are of them so they’re always happy to move on when given the chance.
Are there any venomous species that people often confuse with nonvenomous ones?
ey’re excellent swimmers and love hanging around creeks and wetlands. And despite their scary reputation, they’re very relaxed if le alone.
Definitely. We have a couple of venomous snakes on the Coffs Coast that can be misidentified as what people may assume is a python. It also swings the other way where people think a non-venomous or mildly venomous snake is an Eastern Brown snake. The best advice we can offer is to not try and catch or kill the snake. Instead, take a photo and call either Steve or myself. We can identify the snake for you and offer further advice.
What do you think would help most to shift public perception. Education,
exposure, or better media representation? Education through exposure wins every time. Seeing a snake up close and learning how it behaves, completely changes people’s mindset. The more education we can pass on to the public through exposure, means more snakes are left alone and as a result, fewer bites occur.
How do poisons or rodent baits affect reptiles? Poisons and baits can be detrimental to snakes as a lot of these pesticides can then act as a secondary poisoning or relay toxicity. What this means is that if we poison a rat or pest, a snake (domestic pet or native animals too) could then eat this poisoned pest and then the secondary animal could die as a result. Instead, opt for poisons or baits that are first generation only such as racumin. What happens when snake populations decline? Rodents multiply, and as a result, native species start to disappear such as frogs, lizards, small mammals and birds etc. This imbalance would create a problem in the ecosystem.

The holiday season is often described as the most wonderful time of the year. Yet, for many, it can also be one of the most stressful. Between shopping for gifts, preparing meals, attending social gatherings, and managing family dynamics, the idea of a peaceful Christmas can feel like a distant dream. But what if this year could be different? What if you could create a holiday season that feels calm, joyful, and truly meaningful?
One of the biggest sources of holiday stress is the pressure to make everything perfect. From the decorations to the dinner table, we often set ourselves up for disappointment by striving for an unattainable ideal. Instead, focus on what truly matters to you and your loved ones. Ask yourself what traditions bring the most joy to your family, and are there any tasks or events you can simplify or skip altogether? By prioritising what is meaningful and letting go
of perfection, you will create space for genuine connection and relaxation.

e holidays o en come with a packed schedule of events, from finishing work commitments to catching up with friends and family gatherings.
The holidays often come with a packed schedule of events, from finishing work commitments to catching up with friends and family gatherings. While it is wonderful to celebrate with others, overcommitting can leave you feeling drained. This year, consider setting boundaries that protect your time and energy. Here are three suggestions to help you navigate not overcommitting yourself: politely decline invitations that do not align with your priorities; schedule downtime for yourself and your immediate family; and communicate your needs clearly and kindly with others. Remember, saying “no” to one thing often means saying “yes” to your well-being.
Focus on presence, not presents. It is easy to get caught up in the material aspects of Christmas, but the most cherished memories often come

from moments of connection, not the gifts under the tree. Shift your focus from buying the perfect presents to being present with your loved ones.
Try these ideas: plan activities that encourage quality time, like baking cookies, playing games, or watching holiday movies together, write heartfelt notes to express your gratitude and love and practice mindfulness to fully enjoy each moment, whether it is sipping hot chocolate or listening to your favourite music.
While the holiday season can be busy, it does not have to be overwhelming. By setting realistic expectations, practising mindful boundaries, and focusing on presence over presents, you can create a Christmas that feels peaceful and fulfilling.
This year, give yourself the gift of calm and connection. After all, the true spirit of Christmas lies not in the hustle and bustle but in the moments of love, joy, and togetherness. Until next time, be kind and gentle with yourself.

CCOSMETIC & SKIN CLINIC

With an extensive medical background and a passion for natural, ethical care, Registered Nurse Ella Burgess has established herself as one of the Co s Coast’s most trusted aesthetic practitioners. Her clinic, Ella Burgess Aesthetics, blends clinical precision with warmth and professionalism, o ering a personalised approach to modern skin health.

an you tell us a little about your background and what inspired you to start Ella Burgess Aesthetics?
I began my career as a Registered Nurse working within operating theatres in Sydney where I developed a strong clinical foundation providing direct patient care. I completed postgraduate studies in Anaesthetics and Recovery and worked alongside some of Sydney’s leading plastic surgeons, which sparked my interest in facial anatomy.
I’m grateful for my years in hospital settings where I gained experience managing critical intraoperative events such as cardiac arrests and anaphylaxis. These experiences strengthened my confidence and clinical decision-making, which are essential in cosmetic medicine. I founded the clinic to provide aesthetic care that is individualised, thorough, and centred on informed decision-making.
What was your vision when you first opened, and how has it evolved since

I wanted to prioritise patient education and structured treatment planning. at vision has evolved into o ering multiple treatment modalities for facial balance and a wider range of skin concerns.
My original vision was to create a clinic on the Coffs Coast that felt both professional and welcoming; a clinical environment with a warm, luxury feel. I wanted to prioritise patient education and structured treatment planning. That vision has evolved into offering multiple treatment modalities for facial balance and a wider range of skin concerns. We’re continuing to grow, with some exciting new technologies and announcements coming soon!
What are your clinic’s core services or areas of expertise?
My core work involves providing cosmetic and skin treatments. Every patient begins with a detailed consultation to assess their concerns, determine suitability, and develop an individual treatment plan that aligns with their goals. What makes your approach to skin health

and aesthetics unique? My approach is conservative and ethical. Just because something can be treated doesn’t always mean it should be. I take time to assess facial proportions, skin quality, and patient expectations before recommending any treatment.
Education is central to my process. Patients often joke that they get an anatomy lesson they didn’t ask for, but I believe informed decision-making is essential. I explain what each treatment involves, set realistic expectations, and discuss maintenance so patients understand every step.
How do you ensure every client feels informed and cared for throughout their experience?
I ensure there’s adequate time for consultation, clear communication, and ongoing support. Patients receive detailed post-care information
in both verbal and written form, and follow-up reviews are arranged to monitor results and make adjustments if needed. I encourage open communication and patients can reach out anytime with questions or concerns.
The aesthetics industry changes quickly. How do you stay up to date with new treatments, products, and technology?
This industry evolves rapidly, so I prioritise ongoing professional development. I attend regular training sessions, workshops, and conferences in Sydney and Brisbane, and plan to attend international education events in 2026. I also review emerging clinical data and consult with experienced colleagues to ensure that every product or procedure introduced to the clinic has a strong evidence base and clear clinical indications.
What has been one of your biggest milestones or proudest achievements so far?
A key milestone has been the growth of the clinic through patient referrals and word of mouth. Expanding into my own clinic was a proud moment, it reflected the trust patients place in me and the consistent quality of care they receive. That trust is something I value deeply and strive to maintain with every patient. How would you describe your philosophy

around aesthetic care and skin health?
My philosophy is grounded in the idea that less is more. Aesthetic care should enhance natural features, not alter them. The best results are subtle and undetectable.
is industry evolves rapidly, so I prioritise ongoing professional development. I a end regular training sessions, workshops, and conferences in Sydney and Brisbane, and plan to a end international education events in 2026.
I also believe in simplifying skincare, focusing on clinically supported essentials rather than overcomplicated routines. Every recommendation I make is evidence-based, practical, and designed to deliver real results without the marketing noise.
What do you love most about being part of the Coffs Coast community?
The Coffs Coast community values authenticity and connection, which makes my work so rewarding. Many patients return several times a year, allowing me to build long-term professional relationships based on trust and respect.
Moving my business to a regional area came with challenges, as many people already have long-standing relationships with local practitioners, but I’ve been incredibly grateful

and loyalty of my patients here.
What’s next for Ella Burgess Aesthetics?
I’ll continue to expand our skin treatment offerings and refine structured treatment pathways. Ongoing education and clinical excellence remain central to everything I do. I have exciting plans and new technologies on the horizon for 2026, it’s going to be our best year yet!
How can people get in touch?
People can contact the clinic via our website, phone, or social media. If you’re unsure where to start, I recommend booking a complimentary 30-minute consultation, it’s the perfect way to discuss your goals and create a personalised plan.

Saige Ultrasound just hit the 6-month mark! How has the journey been?
There is always a big hill to climb at the start but it has been amazing. The support from our local community, doctors, and expecting families has been overwhelmingly positive. We are deeply grateful for the trust you’ve placed in us and the kind feedback we've received. Thanks to your trust, referrals, and kind words, our appointment calendar filled quickly, confirming the need for a service like ours in the region.
What is the biggest takeaway from this initial phase?
The clear message is that there is a strong demand for the high-quality, patient-focused ultrasound services we provide. We’ve heard countless stories from clients who appreciated our gentle approach, flexible scheduling, and clear communication. That feedback has fueled us daily and strengthened our commitment to clinical excellence delivered with compassion. What can patients look forward to next?
You spoke, and we listened. Demand grew faster than we anticipated, and we take seriously the responsibility to serve without delay. We are continuing to expand our capacity with more scanning hours and increased staffing. Our focus remains on creating a safe, comfortable environment

where every patient feels seen and supported. We have an amazing team right now and we will work hard to make sure any new team members will provide that same level of care and dedication.
Any final thoughts at the six-month mark?
Just one: thank you. Your confidence in Saige Ultrasound has shaped our growth, and we’re honoured to grow alongside this community.

At Allegra School, wellbeing isn’t a program that sits alongside learning, it’s the foundation on which every classroom interaction and relationship is built. Throughout the years this vision has been guided and refined by Danielle Free, Coordinator of Student Wellbeing. Her leadership in student wellbeing has become central to Allegra’s identity as a school that values connection, collaboration and care. Danielle’s work has been instrumental in creating a culture where students are genuinely seen, heard, and supported. Through her guidance, wellbeing has become part of every conversation, including the way staff respond to student challenges and how learning environments are designed to foster trust and belonging. As Danielle often reminds her team, “connection over correction” isn’t about removing expectations, but about recognising that authentic relationships are the pathway to growth.
This approach allows Allegra students to take risks, experience setbacks, and build resilience all within a framework of safety and respect. When students know boundaries exist to

They’re not passive recipients of support, they’re partners in building a school that feels safe, inclusive and dynamic.
Allegra School is built on the belief that learning should be both supportive and transformative, and this vision is reflected in every part of

With simulated gambling on the rise, exposure is no longer limited to clubs and pubs. Children as young as eleven are now being exposed to gambling-like features through gaming apps, online ads, and in-app purchases. Professionals warn that this early unregulated exposure may act as a form grooming for future gambling addiction.
2025 report from the Australian Institute Family Studies corroborates this, stating nearly 1 in 3 Australians aged 12 to 17 participated in gambling, rising to 46% among 18 to 19-year-olds. Parents have expressed concern, and 1 in 4 report finding topic difficult to raise with their children. Further findings from the Royal Children’s Hospital National Child Health Poll show that
• Neighbourhood Centres, providing parent education
• You have built a modest emergency fund to reduce stress.
• RSLs and venues, offering harm minimisation awareness
Symptoms Finances May Be Getting Out of Control:
• Health and mental health services, for clinician and physician education
The harsh reality is, according to Finder News, Australians are expected to carry more than $2.7 billion in Christmas debt into the new year, with the average person owing around $1,634. Almost half will take up to five months to repay what they spend and many will still be paying it off by next Christmas. That is a significant level of financial pressure.
• Using credit cards or loans for everyday expenses.
• Schools and education providers
• Missing payments or hiding bills.
• Drug and alcohol services, delivering education to staff and clients
• Gambling in the hope of “winning back” money.
• Faith-based organisations and parenting networks
• Feeling anxious, sleepless or arguing about finances.
• Helene – GambleAware Community Engagement Coordinator
• Sherri – GambleAware Program Manager

Capturing Community Connection through storytelling
with ANGELA MARTIN
FROM LIFELINE NORTH COAST

Graeme “Phil” Crofts is the driving force behind the Coffs Harbour Uniting Church’s Soup Kitchen. He was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to the community and was named Coffs Harbour Citizen of the Year in 2016.
“The way I see it, our job is simple; we’re here to serve a meal and offer kindness at the front door. Sometimes people walk in and say, ‘Can you help me?’ and we say, ‘Of course.’ That’s what we do. We try not to judge. Others might look at someone and think, ‘What are you doing here?’ but it’s not our business. If someone wants a meal, they’re welcome. That’s the heart of it. There’s a lot of misunderstanding about the people who come through our doors. You don’t know what someone’s been through
until you’ve walked in their shoes, and even then, it’s not for us to decide. If they want to share, we listen. If not, we still feed them.
I’ve been part of this place for 34 years.
When I was putting together the history of the Soup Kitchen, I found an old Minutes Book from the early days. It had a note from a woman I knew, I used to play footy with her son. She’d written that her work in the soup kitchen was part of her Christian journey. That stuck with me. It made me think about what it means to be a good Christian. I struggle with that sometimes, but I try to do the right thing.
I’ve been part of this place for 34 years. When I was pu ing together the history of the Soup Kitchen, I found an old Minutes Book from the early days.
We’ve had some tough characters come through, but we’ve also had some beautiful ones. In the last year, three or four people have walked in and said, ‘I used to be a diner here.’ That’s a buzz. One guy came in to help clean up and said, ‘Let’s do it again next week.’ Another was a doctor who told me, ‘I used to go to the soup kitchen when I was little.’ That’s the kind of thing that makes it all worth it.
It’s not just about food. It’s about dignity. It’s about connection. It’s about showing up for people, no matter where they’ve come from.”

For Jason and Emma de Groot, building homes is about trust, family, and creating spaces where life happens. OVER 13 YEARS, THE JDG CONSTRUCTIONS
DUO HAVE BUILT A REPUTATION FOR QUALITY, INTEGRITY, AND PERSONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP, combining Jason’s handson skills with Emma’s organisation and warmth on the Co s Coast.

Cyour business and how it first began?
JDG Constructions is a familyrun building company founded on integrity, quality, and genuine personal service. Based on the Coffs Coast, we specialise in bespoke new homes and architectural renovations, taking great pride in creating homes that reflect our clients’ visions and lifestyles.
The business began almost 13 years ago, just months before we got married. Jason’s lifelong passion for construction and design was the driving force. He wanted to create a business where attention to detail and client relationships mattered as much as the finished build. It was a leap of faith at the time, but looking back, it’s one of the best decisions we ever made.
Who’s involved in the business today, and what roles do each of you play?
Our business is very much a family affair. I (Emma) manage the behind-the-scenes side, client communication, admin, scheduling, and ensuring that everything runs smoothly from start to finish. Jason leads the team onsite, managing projects, coordinating trades, and keeping the craftsmanship at the high standard our clients expect.
We’re lucky to have Jason’s Dad, Paul, as part of the crew. He brings decades of experience as a skilled carpenter and mentor to the team. Alongside him are Lucas, our incredible Leading Hand, and Jack, an exceptional carpenter who brings enthusiasm and precision to every project. Together, we’ve created a team that not only shares our passion for building, but also our values - hard work, honesty, and family first.
We know each other’s rhythms and strengths, and we celebrate our wins together, whether it’s completing a complex architectural build or receiving heartfelt feedback from a client.
What inspired your family to go into business together?
The inspiration came from wanting to build something lasting, not just homes, but a business that reflected our values. We both wanted control over how projects were delivered and the kind of relationships we built with clients.
As a husband-and-wife team, we balance each other’s strengths. Jason thrives on-site, bringing ideas to life with precision and creativity, while I manage the details, the communication, and the support systems that keep everything on
track. Our shared vision is simple: to treat every home we build as if it were our own.
What are the best parts about working with family and the biggest challenges?
The best part is the trust and understanding that comes naturally. We know each other’s rhythms and strengths, and we celebrate our wins together, whether it’s completing a complex architectural build or receiving heartfelt feedback from a client. Working together allows us to combine creativity with consistency, and that’s incredibly rewarding.
Of course, the challenges are real too. When your business and your marriage are intertwined, it can be hard to switch off. Sometimes work talk follows us to the dinner table. Over the years, we’ve learned the importance of clear communication, respect, and humour. We remind ourselves that disagreements are about ideas, not about us, and we make space for life outside the business. Continued over...

How do you keep a healthy balance between work and family life?
Balance is something we’re constantly refining. The reality is that when you run your own business, it’s hard to clock off completely. Some calls simply need to be answered, except during Teddy’s bedtime, of course!
When we do take time off, we make it count. We live on a small property, and spending time there with our son and horses keeps us grounded. We love getting out on the river wakeboarding together, or just enjoying a slow weekend on the farm. Those moments remind us why we work so hard. It’s all for the lifestyle and the people we love.
How has the business evolved over the years?
When we started JDG Constructions, it was just the two of us tackling smaller renovations and new builds. Over the years, we’ve grown steadily and intentionally, building a reputation that has allowed us to take on more complex and architectural projects.
Today, our work ranges from high-end coastal homes to intricate renovations, often designed in collaboration with talented local architects. Each project challenges us in new ways and pushes us to refine our systems and craftsmanship.
Despite the growth, we’ve stayed true to our roots, maintaining that personal touch where clients always deal directly with us, not a chain of supervisors or subcontractors.
What values or lessons from your families have shaped how you do business?
We were both raised in families that believed in hard work, honesty, and pride in what you do. For me, watching my parents juggle work and family taught me perseverance and the importance of doing things properly the first time.
Jason’s grandparents ran their own business for many years, and even when they sold it, they made sure their staff were looked after. That kind of loyalty left a lasting impression. Jason’s Opa, a bespoke bootmaker who crafted pieces for Elton John, Kerry Packer, and Paul Hogan, worked well into his 90s.

His dedication to precision and pride in his craft is something Jason channels daily on-site. Those family values, care, respect, craftsmanship, are embedded in every project we take on.
What has been one of your proudest milestones as a family business?
Every completed home feels like a milestone, but the proudest moments are when clients tell us that we’ve exceeded their expectations, that they love coming home every day. That’s the reward that never gets old.
We’re also proud of how far we’ve come as a family unit. Seeing our son grow up surrounded by the values of teamwork and determination, and watching him take an interest in what Dad does, is something truly special.
How has the local community supported your journey, and how do you give back?
The Coffs Coast community has been at the heart of our journey. Most of our work comes through word-of-mouth and returning clients, which says so much about the relationships we’ve built.
We make a conscious effort to support local trades, suppliers, and businesses wherever possible. Keeping our projects local means supporting families like ours and contributing to a thriving, sustainable building industry right here at home.
Keeping our projects local means supporting families like ours and contributing to a thriving, sustainable building industry right here at home.
We also like to stay involved in community events and local initiatives whenever time allows, giving back to the same community that has given us so much support over the years.
What exciting plans or projects are coming up for JDG Constructions?
We’ve got several exciting builds in the pipeline for the year ahead, including a few architecturally designed homes that push

our creativity and craftsmanship to the next level.
Our goal moving forward is steady, thoughtful growth, expanding our capabilities while keeping that personal, family-run approach that our clients value. We’re also passionate about mentoring young tradespeople and helping the next generation understand what it means to build with pride and purpose.
Finally, what’s the secret to running a
successful family business?
It comes down to communication, patience, and shared goals. We’ve learned to listen, laugh, and adapt. Building homes together is one thing, but building a life together through those challenges - that’s what keeps us grounded.
Every home we construct carries a piece of our story and a reflection of our family’s values. For us, that’s what success really looks like.

Can you tell us a bit about your business and how it first began?
True Floors Mid North Coast is a locally operated flooring company specialising in commercial and residential floor coverings. Our journey began when we decided to relocate from Sydney to Coffs Harbour. Jason had been a trusted and highly regarded installer for many years with True Floors in Sydney, helping build the company and its strong reputation.
After COVID and the difficulty of finding a suitable home for our family of four, we craved more space, a slower pace, and a stronger sense of community. When we spoke to the Sydney True Floors team about our plans, they offered Jason and me the opportunity to create a new branch together, leveraging his installation expertise and my
management experience in administration and customer relations to guide its growth and operations across the Mid North Coast. It felt like the perfect fit, and in March 2024, True Floors Mid North Coast was born.
Who’s involved in the business today, and what roles do each of you play?
We co-manage the business as a husbandand-wife team. Jason focuses on installation and projects, overseeing jobs, mentoring our trade staff, and ensuring every project meets True Floors’ high standards. I (Aleesa) manage administration, sales, and customer service, keeping operations smooth and guiding clients through their flooring projects.
Our dedicated team includes a project manager, trade assistant, apprentice, residential sales consultant, and admin support. Each member plays a vital role, and their commitment makes all the difference. Together, we operate more like a work family
than a traditional business team.
What inspired your family to go into business together?
We’ve always shared a strong work ethic and a drive to build something meaningful. What inspired us to go into business as a family was the opportunity to create a business that reflects our values and the way we want to work. Working together to make decisions, solve problems as a team, and see our vision develop as we tackle each project brings us great satisfaction.
What are the best parts about working with family, and the biggest challenges?
The best part is that we’re in it together, we share the same vision and goals, and we understand each other’s strengths. We also take pride in seeing what we can achieve as a team.
The biggest challenge is switching off. Work
can easily creep into family life, and separating business time from family time isn’t always easy, especially when we’re busy with projects and deadlines. It’s something we’re actively learning to manage as the business grows. How do you keep a healthy balance between work and family life?
Finding the right balance is a work in progress. As a new business, we work long hours to get everything running smoothly, but we try to make time for our family whenever possible. Living in Coffs Harbour gives us the lifestyle we moved here for, whether it’s enjoying small moments outdoors or a quick break with the kids. We’re consciously nurturing this balance as the business matures.

How has the business evolved or changed over the years?
Even in our first couple of years, the growth has been impressive. We started from a small local base and have expanded to larger commercial projects across the region while developing our residential side. Along the way, we’ve invested in our team, streamlined operations, strengthened relationships with local builders, schools, and businesses, and worked to raise our profile in the community , helping us become a trusted name on the Mid North Coast.
What values or lessons from your parents, or earlier generations, have guided your approach?
Both of us were raised to value honesty, hard work, and respect. These principles have become the foundation of True Floors Mid North Coast. We treat every customer, client, supplier, and team member with integrity, and take pride in the details. Simple, but powerful values guide everything we do.
What has been one of your proudest moments or milestones as a family business?
Seeing our team grow and the positive feedback we receive from clients has been
incredibly rewarding. Hearing that our team was professional, the job went smoothly, or the finished result exceeded expectations reminds us of the effort we put in and the difference our work makes for our customers.
We treat every customer, client, supplier, and team member with integrity, and take pride in the details. Simple, but powerful values guide everything we do.
These moments highlight the strength and dedication of our team and the standards we uphold every day.
How has the local community supported your journey, and how do you give back?
We’ve been fortunate to see our support from the local community grow steadily, from builders offering opportunities on new projects to homeowners choosing us for their renovations. Over time, this has helped us build strong relationships and a trusted reputation across the Mid North Coast. We’ve also been proud to complete significant local projects that serve the community, including local public schools, Coffs Harbour TAFE, Coffs Harbour Hospital, The Coffs Harbour Cultural and Civic Space (Yarrila Place), and several rural fire service depots. We give back by working with regional trades and supporting apprentices as they build careers in flooring.
What exciting plans or projects are coming up for the future?
We’re continuing to grow our presence across the Mid North Coast, building our reputation in the local residential market and strengthening our ties within the community. We’re also in the process of developing and growing our showroom to help guide customers and clients through our full selection of flooring, making it easier to choose the right product for their projects. Most importantly, we’re focused on sustainable growth and creating something strong, steady, and long-term for our family and our team.

When Scarlet walks into e Barn each morning, she is reminded why this place means so much to her and to their community. What started decades ago with Cole and Ray Jones taking a chance on an empty shop has grown into a bustling hub of stories, character, and second chances for furniture and for people.
an you take us back to the beginning – how did it all start?
The Barn was founded in 1986 by Cole Jones. At the time, he couldn’t find a tenant for his shop, so he decided to try selling a few things himself. As Cole tells it, “I went to an auction at the foot of Dorrigo Mountain and bought a lot of gear… and a truck! Wasn’t planning on buying a truck, but I did. Thought I’d sell it, but decided to do a run to Sydney first. That went well, so I kept going, mostly with building materials and some furniture. The demand was huge, helping build homes around Bundagen, Bellingen and up to Thora. People said I’d go broke, but I made it happen!”
from Cole and Ray Jones. Since then, we have grown it from a simple second-hand shop into a vibrant community hub offering unique vintage furniture, building materials, home styling pieces, and estate clean-out services. Our mission has always been the same: keep as much as possible out of landfill and in the community.
What are some of your proudest moments?
We have grown from a simple second-hand shop into a vibrant community hub o ering unique vintage furniture, building materials, home styling pieces, and estate clean-out services.
After my Dad passed in 2015, the way the community rallied around us was incredibly moving. We’ve also saved hundreds of tonnes of items from landfill, finding new homes for them in local houses, Airbnbs, and businesses. When customers tell me their Barn find is the centrepiece of their home, that is when all the hard work feels worth it.
service. We love helping people find exactly what they’re looking for, or suggesting creative upcycling ideas to help them turn something simple into a one-of-a-kind feature for their home. That face-to-face connection and genuine care keeps people coming back.
Who’s been important to your story?
My parents set the foundation with Dad’s work ethic that was unmatched, and Mum’s vision for creating a family business that served the community still guides us today.
Kris is the driving force behind the shop’s daily operations, and I’ve loved bringing my passion for restoration into the mix. Stuart stepped in when we needed him most, and Sophia’s warmth makes every customer feel welcome. But it truly is a family effort, we have big working bees to tidy and reorganise The Barn, and my teenage nephews roll up their sleeves in the school holidays for a couple of solid days’ work. Everyone pitches in, and that’s a big part of what makes The Barn feel special. What sets The Barn apart?
When did your family become involved? Seventeen years ago, we bought The Barn
What’s been the key to your longevity? Community, adaptability and our customer
We’re more than a store,we’re a story. Every item has a past, and we help connect it to its future. We don’t just sell furniture; we help customers create beautiful, sustainable spaces full of character.

From long days on the farm to late-night delivery runs across the region, Promised Land Produce is a true family operation built on grit, heart, and generations of farming heritage. Libby Waugh talks us through how the business began, the roles each family member plays, and the community they’re so proud to serve.

Hi Libby. Can you tell us a bit about how Promised Land Produce began and how it’s grown into the family business it is today?
My Dad and Grandad started the business just before COVID and then during COVID things exploded. We had to help out, my brothers balanced online school work and the farm, and I deferred university to help build the business and meet the demand.
I have recently finished my 3rd year of studying at Griffith University with one more year to go. I come back in the holidays and uni breaks to help and while I’m studying on the Gold Coast I run the business from my computer completing all the orders, emails, website, app and social media. Angus is currently studying online a Bachelor of Agriculture at UNE in Armidale, and Harry is finishing year 9 at Dorrigo High School.
Your Dad Ross has deep roots in farming,
a third-generation potato farmer! What was it like growing up surrounded by that legacy, and how has it shaped your own love of the land?
Growing up with Dad, Ross, as a thirdgeneration potato farmer meant farming was just part of everyday life. We all spent time sitting in the tractor with him when we were little and started helping out from a young age; picking and planting vegetables, irrigating, fencing, and all the other hands-on jobs that come with it. It taught us a strong work ethic, but also independence, problemsolving, and how to stay calm under pressure. You learn quickly that the weather doesn’t wait and the job’s not done until it’s done.
It sounds like everyone in your family has their own area of expertise. How do you all balance your different roles and strengths within the business?
Libby - I run the social media accounts, create and produce content, run the website and app, manage stock levels, pretty much
anything to do with technology that’s me. Dad avoids the technology as much as he can! Ross – daily running of the farm, delivery logistics and delivery driver, managing stock levels, and liaising with suppliers.
Angus – day to day farming jobs, feeds the chickens, works the cattle and plants and maintains crops.
Harry – does one day a week work experience on Thursdays and helps with packing orders and deliveries. After school, he prints orders and organises them into delivery routes. He also sends out messages to customers about ordering times and reminders.
My Nan (Ross’s Mum) has a special delivery route on Thursdays.
We all help out on Thursday and Friday with the packing and deliveries.
Promised Land Produce delivers fresh fruit and veg from Red Rock to Nambucca, and even as far as Armidale and Dorrigo. What’s been the biggest challenge, and

reward of running a door-to-door delivery service across such a wide area?
One of the biggest challenges is being able to supply what the customer wants and that is something we are very proud of. Based on the north side of Bellingen, we can be impacted by flooding and road closures. We value our customers, and sometimes would travel a 2-hour road trip from Dorrigo to Bellingen if the Dorrigo Mountain closes. We have only ever had to delay deliveries once due to flood waters closing all the roads to the farm. Another challenge was that as our business grew, we had to come up with more effective ways for customers to order. People now can order through the Promised Land Produce app or through the website.
Growing up with Dad, Ross, as a thirdgeneration potato farmer meant farming was just part of everyday life. We all spent time si ing in the tractor with him when we were li le and started helping out from a young age

What’s rewarding is speaking to customers weekly and getting great feedback. My Dad loves a chat and sometimes his delivery run takes longer than it should!
What does a typical day look like for you and your family on the farm?
The typical delivery day is Thursday. This involves us getting to the farm at 5:30 in the morning and the first thing we do is start packing the produce into boxes that have to be delivered to Ebor, Hernani and Armidale. Dad then leaves the farm and heads west to make our Armidale deliveries. Myself and my
brothers and our other employees pack all the orders for the Coffs Harbour area. Angus will leave at about 8am and he covers the west side of Coffs Harbour out to Coramba, Nana Glen and then does the loop back into Moonee, Sapphire and Korora. Nan comes to the farm at 10am and heads off for her deliveries to Urunga, Valla and Nambucca. Harry and I stay in the shed and keep packing boxes until the delivery utes return. In the afternoon Dad and I will set off to Red Rock and weave in and out of Corindi, Arrawarra, Mullaway, Safety Beach, Woolgoolga, Sandy Beach and Emerald Beach making our way back to Coffs Harbour. Angus and Harry set off in the other delivery ute and complete the Bellingen, Sawtell and Toormina deliveries. Also on Thursday, Angus is still running around the farm making sure chickens and animals are fed and everything is working well. We usually end the day back at my Nan’s house for roast lamb and veggies and there’s always dessert. After all this we come back on Friday and pack the remaining orders and complete these deliveries during the day. Working so closely with family can be both rewarding and challenging. What do you love most about running a business together?
What I love most is that we get to spend time together while working towards something we all care about. Everyone in the family is a hard worker, we don’t knock off at 5pm! Some nights we’re getting home to Dorrigo at 10pm, but no one complains because we know the job’s not done until it’s done. We each bring different strengths to the business. The business was originally started with the help of my Grandad (Ross’s Dad), and since he passed in 2020, we’ve all wanted to carry on his love for farming and his commitment to the community. He was a big believer in helping others and continuing that legacy means a lot to us.
You’re clearly passionate about connecting the community with fresh, local produce. How important is that local connection to the Promised Land Produce ethos?
Local connection is everything to Promised Land Produce. We’ve grown mostly through word of mouth, and that’s because we’ve built strong relationships with other local businesses, schools, and sporting organisations. We’re not just delivering fruit and veg, we’re part of the community. As a family, we’re heavily involved in Sawtell Surf Club, from patrolling to helping with nippers, and we bring that same spirit of teamwork and service into the business. We are big supporters of local schools, sporting organisations and show societies by offering things like raffle prizes. Supporting locals is part of our ethos. It’s about keeping things close, honest, and community-driven.

Grazing by Kanisha began in 2022 as a simple hobby created from the heart of a homegrown, family-inspired passion.
What started as making platters for the people closest to me quickly became something much bigger. My family and friends were the first to recognise my talent, and their encouragement played a huge role in turning those early creations into a flourishing small business. Their support and belief in me continue to shape every part of what Grazing by Kanisha is today.
Being a family-rooted business means every platter, picnic, and grazing table is crafted with genuine care. I pour the same love into my work as I did when I first created spreads for loved ones. Over the years, the business has grown into offering a wide range of services, including elaborate grazing tables, intimate
picnic setups, and bar service for special events. Yet, no matter how much we expand, the heart of the business remains grounded in those homegrown beginnings.
The most rewarding part of what I do is seeing the joy my creations bring to people during their most important celebrations.
Weddings are a particular favourite. Creating bold, beautiful statement pieces that become part of someone’s once-in-alifetime moment is incredibly meaningful.
The Coffs Coast community has embraced my small business with open arms, and I’m proud to bring a family-driven, local touch to every event. Grazing by Kanisha truly began at home, and that foundation continues to inspire everything I create today.

Finding calm, forgiveness and connection this Christmas is something many of us hope for - whether we are spending the season with family, or apart from them after a busy and, at times, difficult year. Amidst the Christmas preparations and gatherings, I invite us to pause and reflect on one of the season’s most beautiful messages: “Peace be with you.”
Peace doesn’t mean life without challenges or disagreements and in a world that often feels hurried, Christmas offers the opportunity to nurture peace in our hearts, our families, and our communities. Showing our children how to approach life with understanding, gentleness, and gratitude.
At home, peace begins with listening, truly listening to one another, without rushing to fix or judge. Small rituals like shared meals, evening walks, or simply turning off devices to talk can create moments of calm for busy families.
In our workplace, peace looks like supporting colleagues, showing patience, and collaborating with kindness. The end of the year can be stressful, so offering encouragement and checking in on colleagues can make a big difference.
Friendships grow and change throughout our lives, and our children learn from what they see. We can help them understand that forgiveness is essential - we all make mistakes. Encourage children to apologise and let go of anger, reminding them that peace comes from
lightening the heart.
Sometimes peace in our own families feels the hardest to find. Old hurts, poor use of language, misunderstandings or distance can grow over time. The first step is often a small one - a phone call, a card, or simply saying, “I’d like us to start again.” Christmas gives us permission to soften our hearts. Whether through shared laughter over lunch, memories, prayer, or a quiet word of reconciliation, each small gesture brings us closer to the peace that the birth of Jesus symbolises.
At Bishop Druitt College, we embrace this spirit of community throughout the year, especially as we approach the festive season. One of our favourite traditions is coming together to decorate the school for Christmas. Our students, staff, and families work in partnership, and we invite families to bring tree decorations from their travels. It’s a way to celebrate our diversity and the global nature of Christmas.
We also enjoy a fun and creative Christmas door decorating event, where staff decorate their classroom doors. The students love walking around to see the unique and often whimsical designs.
Another important tradition is our BDC Christmas Hamper Appeal. We invite our BDC community, students, families, and local businesses, to contribute what they can to spread hope at Christmas. Every donation, whether it’s a gift, a hamper item, or a financial contribution, helps make Christmas

brighter for those in need. We are proud to work with Warrina Women and Children’s Refuge and The Soupie, two incredible local organisations that support those facing hardship.
As we reflect on the year, I also want to mention that there are still limited spots available at BDC for Kindy and Year 11 enrolments for 2026. We warmly invite new families to join our BDC community, where we prioritise students’ wellbeing, intellectual, spiritual, physical, emotional, and social development. If you’re considering Bishop Druitt College for your child’s education, please get in touch soon to secure a spot in one of these year levels.
The generosity demonstrated across our country at Christmas, through donations, volunteering, or simply reaching out to help others, reminds us that peace is often found in small, thoughtful actions. Last year, I was moved by the kindness I saw in Ukraine, where communities shared songs, Christmas decorations, and food, even when they had so little. Christmas is a time when we remember that hope and peace can come from the simplest acts of kindness.
So, this Christmas, may your home be filled with calm hearts, forgiving spirits, and laughter, and may our school community continue to thrive in peace, creativity, and kindness.
Peace be with you, today and always.

Hot and cramped, Diana Hernandez Jaramillo has been si ing in the rear of a specially modified three-seater Cessna nicknamed Bruce for hours, yet the Southern Cross University Research Associate isn’t complaining.
Flying over the Great Barrier Reef day-after-day chasing saltwater plumes and clouds, she reckons she’s got one of the best jobs in the world.
“The birds’ eye view from Bruce is stunning, breathtaking,” said Dr Hernandez Jaramillo who is one of the project’s instrument operators in the research aircraft.
“We see the different coral reef formations, the islands and marine creatures like sharks and turtles. Each day is different because the cloud types change and the conditions on the water are always shifting.”
Dr Hernandez Jaramillo is part of an exclusive gamechanger project headed up by Southern Cross University out of its National Marine Science Centre at Coffs Harbour. Sitting up front in the co-pilot seat is Diana’s PhD supervisor Associate Professor Daniel Harrison. Associate Professor Harrison is leading the world’s first trial of marine cloud brightening, a concept which has been largely theoretical until this project started on Australia’s Great

Barrier Reef around five years ago. Marine cloud brightening (MCB) has been proposed as a strategy to mitigate coral bleaching effect at the Great Barrier Reef, as part of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP). The idea is to generate a cooling effect on the sea surface by increasing the reflective quality of low-level marine clouds. This is done by spraying seawater droplets that evaporate, creating nano-sized (smaller than the human eye can see) sea salt particles. These particles move in the atmosphere until they reach the marine clouds. Here, the salt particles modify the microphysical properties of the clouds, making them ‘brighter’ and boosting their capacity to reflect the sun away from the ocean surface. This slows the heating of the water temperature in an effort to prevent coral bleaching in future climates.
Dr Hernandez Jaramillo’s PhD thesis set out to understand how these nano-sized particles of sea salt are transported and dispersed in the air, and if they could reach low-level clouds at

the Reef.
Her research paper published in Environmental Research Letters confirmed artificially produced sea salt aerosols can be effectively transported up to cloud base heights, where they have the potential to bolster and ‘brighten’ the clouds, enhancing cloud reflectivity and reducing solar radiation reaching the ocean surface.
Dr Hernandez Jaramillo was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy at the University’s Coffs Harbour graduation ceremony in June. She celebrated the milestone with Professor Harrison and her husband, along with her mother who travelled from Colombia for the occasion.
“It was very special for my mother to see me graduate. She feels incredibly proud,” said Dr Hernandez Jaramillo.
When Diana met Dan … and Bruce Associate Professor Daniel Harrison invited the Colombian national to be part of his MCB team as a PhD candidate (in conjunction with RRAP) in the project’s earliest days in 2020.

MCB sprayers creating plume on research vessel

Like many international students, Diana had travelled to Australia to learn English but remained stranded during the COVID pandemic.

Professor Harrison quickly identified her unique skill set as an asset to the project: a Masters in underwater technology and a Bachelor degree in aeronautical engineering.
“I was able to apply my aeronautical engineering skills, integrating the aerosol instruments with the drones and flying them directly from the boat,” said Dr Hernandez Jaramillo.
Jaramillo responsibility for fitting out the Cessna 337 Skymaster with the instrumentation essential to measure meteorological conditions, aerosol concentrations and size distribution, and cloud microphysical properties.
We fly along the sea spray plume to track it as far as possible, then return and perform multiple transits across it to understand how wide it is
“As the project progressed and the plume expanded, we needed to bring in a research aircraft –affectionately named Bruce after the shark in Finding Nemo. It became the University’s first research airplane, which was a major milestone.”
Professor Harrison gave Dr Hernandez

able to keep them airborne for around two to two and a half hours.” When combined, readings from the drones and the aircraft produce a powerful dataset.

“We fly along the sea spray plume to track it as far as possible, then return and perform multiple transits across it to understand how wide it is,” said Dr Hernandez Jaramillo.
“Right now, our main focus is on the impact these particles have inside the clouds. So, we conduct several transects at cloud base and then within the clouds themselves, looking for any changes in cloud properties.”
Dr Hernandez Jaramillo also has a Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) that allows her to fly medium-sized drones weighing up to 25kg.
“Depending on the mission, we can install different instruments on each drone,” she said. “With the petrol-electric model, we’re
Reflecting on the past five years, Dr Hernandez Jaramillo described the journey as ‘unexpectedly remarkable’.
“The most exciting part for me – and for the rest of the MCB team – has been building everything from the ground up, starting with a set of hypotheses.
“It’s been a steep learning curve, but also incredibly rewarding. It keeps me curious and motivated to keep learning.
The Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program is funded by the partnership between the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and the Australian Government’s Reef Trust.

Congratulations on opening your new store in Coffs Harbour! What inspired you to choose the Big Banana as your next location?
We’ve always had a connection with Northern NSW as my mother was raised in Ulmarra. We’ve holidayed in Minnie Water since I was a kid so it’s a very special area for us and when the opportunity came up to open our first franchise shop at the Big Banana we jumped at the chance! The Big Banana is such an iconic stopover for families so we wanted to be a part of travellers childhood memories and add a little extra sweetness to that!
Junee Licorice & Chocolate has such a strong regional identity, how do you bring that local Riverina charm to the Coffs Coast?
We renovated the shop at the Big Banana in 14 days and it was quite the transformation! We wanted to add a taste of our 1935 Junee Flour Mill to the layout with brick walls and
JUNEE LICORICE & CHOCOLATE OPENS AT THE BIG BANANA
There’s a new kind of indulgence waiting at one of Coffs Harbour’s most iconic attractions. The muchloved Junee Licorice & Chocolate Factory, famous for its organic licorice, handcrafted chocolate, and irresistible rocky road, has officially opened its doors at the Big Banana Fun Park.
our darker chocolate palette with pops of colour. We love mood lighting and a relaxing environment. Having almost the entire team doing the renovation being family members from the area, really helped ensure that objective was met as they’ve been on our journey from the beginning of Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory.
How does this store differ from your Junee factory experience?
which will add to the banana craze!
Will visitors get to see any chocolatemaking in action here?
Absolutely! Not only will they see chocolate making but they’ll be able to do it themselves. Even better!!
We are certified organic and we use high quality ingredients which sets us apart from a lot of other supermarket styled confectionary brands.
We aren’t able to bring all the offering of our 5 storey factory to Coffs but we’ve recently added an interactive chocolate making area which allows customers to get hands on and create their own delicious chocolates - freckles, rocky road and seasonal products. We will also be launching chocolate banana moulds soon
You’re famous for your organic licorice and hand-dipped chocolate treats. What makes your process and ingredients stand out from mass-produced confectionery?
I think there are a few things. We are certified organic and we use high quality ingredients which sets us apart from a lot of other supermarket styled confectionary brands. When visiting our factory you can witness all our products being made which is definitely not the case with a lot of other businesses. There is also a charm to regional

NSW that just feels different to the major city brands. Do you have any exclusive products or flavours available only at the Coffs Harbour store?
We definitely do and are currently in the process of trialling new products that will be exclusively produced and sold in Coffs Harbour. We are passionately wanting to create delicious products that showcase the best growers on the Coffs Coast so tourists passing through can get a taste of Coffs.

coated Inca berries they are a slightly sour berry and pair perfectly with the dark chocolate!
How important is community connection and regional collaboration in your brand’s philosophy?
What are your personal favourites or “must-try” items for first-time visitors?
Being surrounded by licorice and chocolate my entire life I feel I’ve sampled absolutely everything but the unique products are my favourite. Dark chocolate coated freeze dried strawberries are very addictive for me, the milk chocolate pretzels are a strong temptation when in production but I think my absolute favourite is the dark chocolate
It’s a foundation aspect to what we are trying to achieve at JLCF. We love where we live and we want to showcase that to all tourists and customers. We want to bring that into Coffs Harbour’s store by highlighting the food bowl of opportunity with fruits and nuts produced within the region, not just the bananas! We love collaborating with like minded businesses that want to create something not only delicious but fun and playful.
How do you hope visitors will feel when they walk out of your new store besides
a little sugar-high, of course?
Like they are a part of the family; that we’ve grabbed their attention with the chocolate; but that they’ve come along for the ride through our story.
How can people find out more and can they order online?
We have a website that delivers to your door juneelicoriceandchocolate.com or you can pop into our Coffs Harbour store at the Big Banana open everyday except Christmas Day. You can also follow us on socials @juneechocolateatbb or @juneelicoriceandchocolate

s Christmas looms large on the Coffs Coast, the fun of the festive season is lighting up our streets and homes, reminding us of the joy this special time of year brings.
Christmas is traditionally a time for rest, reflection, renewal, and, most importantly, reuniting with our friends and family. It is also a time for hope.
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we often forget the beauty of rest. Christmas offers a rare pause, a time to step back from our busy schedules and breathe.
We’re presented with the opportunity to reflect on 2025, with all of its challenges and its triumphs, and to look forward to the new year with confidence.
As we gather around the Christmas tree or sit down for a meal with family and friends, we’re reminded of the importance of these moments of peace and relaxation.
Renewal is another special part of the Christmas spirit. It’s not just about the new gifts we exchange or the new year ahead, but about renewing our bonds with those we hold dear. In a world which these days is moving at

breakneck speed, taking a moment to reconnect with family and friends, to share stories and create new memories, is invaluable for us all. The joy of Christmas is not in the material but in the heartfelt conversations, the shared laughter, and the feeling of being part of a community.
I’ve seen first-hand how the festive season brings out the best in our local communities on the Coffs Coast. Acts of kindness, large and small, become more frequent, and you can feel the goodwill in the air.
It’s a time of year which reminds of our shared humanity and the strength which comes from togetherness. This Christmas, let’s extend our hand in friendship and solidarity, celebrating our unity and the common values which bind us together. Let’s also reach out to those around us

I’ve seen firsthand how the festive season brings out the best in our local communities on the Co s Coast. Acts of kindness, large and small, become more frequent, and you can feel the goodwill in the air.

whose lives are a daily struggle and for whom Christmas is not so joyful. They might be battling financially and emotionally, experiencing health challenges, or simply trying to find a place to live. Helping a neighbour who is having a tough time is a hallmark of the Australian way of life.
With the cost of living hitting families hard, this Christmas is the perfect opportunity to consider a ‘staycation’ - spending your holidays at home right here on the Coffs Coast, supporting local businesses and, in turn, our local economy.
Christmas is much more than a holiday, however: it’s a season which embodies rest, reflection, renewal, and relationships.
I hope this festive season is a time of happiness, health, and heartwarming connections for all. I wish everyone a happy Christmas filled with peace, love, and joy.

many special events and seeing the smiles my work brings to people. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about being trusted to be part of life’s biggest celebrations. Weddings are an absolute favourite of mine! I have such a passion for creating big, bold, beautiful statement pieces that elevate those unforgettable moments. Knowing that my creations play a part in someone’s once-in-alifetime day is what truly makes this business so meaningful to me.
Who is your greatest influence in business? My greatest influence in business has always been the people around me, my family and friends who believed in me long before Grazing by Kanisha became a business. Creating platters for loved ones is what first sparked my passion, and seeing how much joy it brought them pushed me to turn that passion into something bigger. Their encouragement, support, and constant trust in my creativity continue to inspire me every day. They remind me why I started, and they motivate me to keep growing, keep improving, and keep bringing beautiful experiences to every event I’m part of. Why do you love working on the Coffs Coast? What advice would you give to other women starting in business? The biggest piece of advice I would give is to back yourself completely. Trust your vision, and your talent. urning a profit will be high on your list of goals as a business owner. If you want to generate the best margins, that means keeping an eye on the money that’s going out of the business, as well as what’s coming in.
How can your accountant help with this?
The days where your accountant just did the bookkeeping, compiled your accounts and filed your tax return are well and truly over. Modern accounting firms are far more interested in helping you with your financial performance, your business strategy and offering flexible value-add services that put you in better control of your finances.
If you partner with the right accountant, we can actually save you money, in the short, medium and long-term and that’s good news for the growth of your business.
Key ways your accountant can enhance your financial health
The less expenditure you have as a company, the bigger your profit margin. It sounds incredibly simple, doesn’t it? The smaller your costs, the larger your profit. But if you’re not fully in control of your financial management, it’s very difficult to know WHERE you’re spending money, and WHY you’re not achieving your profit targets.
This is where working with a finance professional adds a huge amount of value.
Your accountant helps put you back in the driving seat of your finances and that’s never been more needed than in the current economic climate.
What specific things can your accountant do and what will the impact be on the future of your business?
• Tax advice and planning. Tax costs can be one of your biggest outgoings as a business, so we’ll focus on getting your tax planning under control, applying for all the relevant tax incentives and ensuring you minimise the taxes on your profits. By paying only what you’re legally required to pay, and making use of any reliefs, we can significantly cut your tax spend in the business.
• Cashflow management and advice ‘Cash is King’ may be a cliche, but it’s true. Unless you can balance the cash inflows and outflows from your business, you’ll never have the liquid cash to pay your bills, cover your payroll costs or cover your operational expenses. We’ll show you where money is going out, and coming in, so you achieve the ideal positive cashflow position.
• Cost control and spend management To improve your cashflow, you need to reduce your cash outflows. An important way to do this is to focus on cost control and spend management, reducing your expenditure, removing unnecessary costs and negotiating better deals with your suppliers. The more you

cut costs back, the better your cashflow will be and the easier it will be to thrive, grow and become more profitable.
• Forecasting and financial modelling When we understand the key financial drivers in your business, we can build you a full financial model. This allows us to change the variables, run different scenarios and forecast the various future paths of your business. Being able to project these numbers forward gives you a clearer view of the path ahead, and that’s invaluable in the challenging economic times that we all face at present.
• Better management reporting and information. Your decision-making stands or falls on the information you have available to you. We provide detailed management accounts, breakdowns of key metrics and forecasts of your cashflow, spending, aged debt and revenue, all of which helps you to save money, make sound decisions and keep the revenues flowing into your business.
Talk to us about cutting costs and boosting profits. Rather than running your business on a wing and prayer, by working with an accountant you get a clear picture on your business financials. We’ll help you cut unnecessary costs, optimise the most profitable parts of the business and increase your overall return on investment.
Let’s talk about how we can work together to support your ongoing business profitability.

COFFS CHRISTMAS

LUNCH 4 U coordinators
Co s Christmas Lunch 4

U o ers connection and community to anyone needing a place to belong on Christmas Day. We sat down with coordinators Ange Anderson and Nick Newling to learn how this heartfelt event comes together and why it means so much to so many.

Hi guys. How did Coffs Christmas Lunch 4 U come about, and what inspired you both to get involved in this wonderful community event?
Ange - The event in some form has been going for approximately 17 years, founded by Julie Ferguson and named the ‘Orphans Christmas Lunch’. Julie stepped down after 9 years, and I saw an ad in the paper seeking volunteers to take over. Deb Leany and myself put our hands up, and we ran it for 3 years. With a two-year break, I took over the reins again and this will be my 6th year in total of coordinating and it's a privilege to host the event. Seeing the generosity of the Coffs community businesses shows the community spirit is alive and well, and people care.
Nick - Preventing food waste has always been a huge passion for me in my personal and

professional life. Growing up I have been truly blessed with wonderful friends and family to celebrate Christmas, however we realise not everyone is as lucky. As Ange said, this wonderful event has been around long before I put my hand up. I have volunteered for 6 years now and have helped co-host with Ange for the past 3 years.
For those who might not be familiar, can you describe what the lunch looks like on the day, and what’s the atmosphere like? Where is it held and who is it open to?
On arrival, guests are greeted with a warm smile, tea/coffee and a sausage sizzle. Music plays in the background and activities are made available like ring toss and table tennis. A cold buffet lunch is served with a fresh spread of meats, salads and condiments, followed by sweet desserts and lots of lucky door prizes. Non-perishable goods are also offered to those in need and any leftover food is shared through our community partners.

Christmas can be a tough time for many people. What does it mean to you to be able to offer a space where no one has to feel alone on the day?
It is truly a privilege for us to provide a safe, supportive and welcoming space for those within the community who don’t have family or friends at this time. We want to ensure that as many bellies are filled, and the guests know they are part of the broader community, and someone cares.
Nick - Ange and I acknowledge that while Christmas is typically a time of celebration this may not be the case for some that remember lost family members or reminisce about larger family gatherings. We strive to create a warm space for anyone to come and join us, no questions asked. We are a free service, and we have an overarching message to all, “We want everyone to know that someone cares” You’ve just received a small grant through

Council’s Community Donations Program, how will that funding help make this year’s event possible?

Warm cha er, light song and full bellies are a great moment of reflection each year for us. More than enough heart warmth to team up again the following year.
The grant went towards venue hire at the Coffs Showground. We don’t apply for a large amount, as we are conscious of all the other wonderful projects that may need funding. We are blessed to have support from other businesses to lighten the load and ensure the event can be run each year. To name a few, TCA – IT Services, Rotary Daybreak, Woolworths Park Avenue, Big Country Meats, The Provedores and Faircloth & Reynolds have been on board for many years. C.ex Coffs donates hams which are also a huge help.
What are some of the biggest challenges that come with hosting such a large community lunch each year, and what are the most rewarding moments that make all the hard work worth it?
Some of the biggest challenges are gauging how many people will be joining us for lunch. We have registration outlets, however it’s not always accurate so we cater for the number registered, plus more as a contingency. Most rewarding is seeing the smiles on people’s faces on the day, and the hum of the venue with chatter and laughter. Some people are very sociable and join in while others sit
quietly. There is no judgement, it’s a safe place and people can stay as long or as short a time as they feel comfortable. It’s a lot of hard work, and it takes a village, that’s for sure, but at the end of the day, we love doing it, and giving back to the community is front and centre of our drive and passion for doing it year after year.
Nick - As Ange said, it takes a village. A village of prep work, decorating, setting up and packing down! The exact moment when the last attendee has had their buffet lunch served to them and they are walking back to their seat, Ange and I usually exchange a look in acknowledgement of the day coming together. Warm chatter, light song and full bellies are a great moment of reflection each year for us with more than enough heart warmth to team up again the following year.
Can you tell us a bit about the volunteers and local support behind the scenes. How important is community involvement to the success of the event?
Without community involvement, we couldn’t run the event. We both have full-time jobs and dedicate our time to the event, in conjunction with day-to-day commitments. The ongoing support each year, is invaluable. We have a
core number of volunteers who turn up on the day, roll up their sleeves and do any duties asked of them. We are seeing more families getting involved in volunteering with parents wanting to instill a sense of community in the younger generation and help those in need. The seniors attending the lunch love to see the younger volunteers being of assistance. Community Care Options has been our auspice for the past 3 years, and their support is valued, and never taken for granted.
What planning goes into preparing for Christmas Day? When do you start, and what does the lead-up look like?
Initial planning starts late October, securing the venue, funding and media to promote the event. Nick, a qualified Chef, oversees the kitchen, working out quantities and devising the menu, and I oversee logistics, being an event coordinator, contacting past and future donors. As the weeks ramp up, we are inundated with offers of donations, goods and services and have some businesses who have supported the event for 17 years.
How can readers get involved or lend a hand?
We have a FB social media page where we encourage people to join to hear the latest updates – Coffs Christmas Lunch 4 U; email coffschristmaslunchforu@gmail.com or phone Ange 0434 080 174 or Nick 0423 675 673

Iwant to thank everyone who came along to our Swell open day in November. It was great meeting some of our neighbours as well as buyers keen to check out progress at their new address. The feedback we received from everyone who stopped in was very positive, and in fact one local Woolgoolga visitor was so impressed with his site tour, he decided on the day to secure his own homesite in The Retreat to build a new family home next year. If you couldn’t make it but are still keen to check out the new community taking shape at Swell Woolgoolga, you can get in touch with the Swell Cardow + Partners sales team to arrange a personal site inspection. With 70 per cent of homesites now sold or under offer, we urge you to enquire now to secure your preferred homesite in our first release.
Everyday life at this new coastal masterplanned community will combine modern conveniences with idyllic walkable community living that evokes memories of days gone by. Safe, wide, tree-lined streets and picturesque walking and bike paths will connect you to friends, neighbours and community for a
truly active and connected life. The Swell planning, design and sales teams are all local northern NSW businesses, collaborating to deliver the Swell vision. Collectively, we have really set out to ensure Swell will become an address that is truly special and uplifting; a celebration of the warmth and freedom we know and love about living in this coastal region. A place where neighbours become friends, and kids want to put the phones down and explore.
Older kids can ride their bike to Woolgoolga High School, open spaces and a range of activities at the Wiigulga Sports Complex, right on your doorstep. Younger kids will love the pump track, but not just for the kids, grown-ups can enjoy a pilates class and a game of pickleball, or catch up with friends at the café while the kids play at the playground or after a game of cricket.

As we head into 2026, the Coffs Coast property market is poised for another year of steady growth and strong lifestyledriven demand. With interest rates forecast to ease slightly, population growth remaining robust and local infrastructure projects maturing, the region is expected to enter a phase of sustainable, confidence-led growth.
Buyers, sellers and investors are approaching 2026 with renewed focus on lifestyle and value, and the Coffs Coast continues to cement its position as one of Australia’s most sought-after coastal destinations.
• Interest rate stability creating momentum: With economists predicting subtle rate reductions across 2026, affordability and borrowing capacity are expected to improve, supporting higher buyer enquiry across all price brackets.
• Ongoing lifestyle migration: Relocators from capital cities will remain a driving force, choosing the Coffs Coast for its beautiful beaches, schooling, airport connectivity, health services and strong regional employment opportunities.
• Tight listings in blue-chip coastal pockets: Suburbs such as Diggers Beach, Korora, Sapphire, Emerald, Bonville and Sawtell are expected to remain under-supplied, leading to strong competition and premium pricing for well-presented quality homes.
• High demand for renovated, turnkey homes: Buyers in 2026 will continue to favour modern, move-in-ready homes, driving strong interest in updated properties and newly completed builds.
• Prestige and coastal-view properties outperforming: Homes with ocean views, architectural features or proximity to the beach and Jetty precincts are expected to see some of the region’s strongest price resilience and best sale results.
• Growth in downsizer and retiree demand: The ageing population combined with relocators seeking lifestyle simplicity, is expected to accelerate demand for single-level luxury villas, boutique townhomes and highquality apartments.

after several cautious years.
• Value-adding opportunity in older homes: Larger blocks and older-style properties will remain attractive for buyers seeking renovation potential or the possibility of secondary dwellings.
First-home buyers and young families are expected to play a larger role in 2026, particularly in central Co s Harbour, Boambee East, Toormina and the northern growth corridor.
• Emerging strength in the sub-$900k segment: First-home buyers and young families are expected to play a larger role in 2026, particularly in central Coffs Harbour, Boambee East, Toormina and the northern growth corridor.
• Investors gradually returning: Improving yields, ongoing low vacancy rates and a more stable lending environment are expected to attract long-term investors back into the market
• Infrastructure momentum supporting confidence: The ongoing Coffs Bypass progress, Jetty Foreshore masterplan works and private commercial redevelopment projects continue to elevate the region’s long-term appeal and underpin property values. Overall, 2026 is shaping up as a year defined by stability, confidence and lifestyle-driven momentum for the Coffs Coast. Continued demand for quality homes, under-supply in prestige locations and the return of motivated buyers are set to support healthy market conditions. Whether upsizing, downsizing or investing, local knowledge and strategic advice will be key to maximising results in this buoyant and evolving market.
Wishing you all a safe, healthy and prosperous 2026 from the Stone Coffs Coast Real Estate Team!
