PRECISION OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE

ELIZABETH STOGANENKO ARCH 211 002 HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE II SPRING 2022

Architecture is used as a way to demonstrate the state of a community or city and its embodied values. Humans want to demonstrate how successful they are and what they can achieve, in addion to incorporang their social and programmac needs. Therefore, they need to be as precise and advanced as possible through developments in technology and knowledge. The idea of precision has transformed throughout the years, starng from the classical period to the period discussed in the next four pages: the modernist period. Rather than creang precision through the careful details of ornamentaon, impressive feats of perfect domes, or precise measurements, modernist design is much more simple but sll elegant. Architects used ideas such as De Sjl and geometric architecture to emphasize a focus on the horizontal and vercal. Materials that helped achieve this was reinforced concrete. The Robie House not only used concrete to create thin horizontal elements, but also brick. The Bauhaus ulized concrete to create forms that precisely adhered to the program and ulized the glass curtain for addional horizont a l e m p h a s i s .
