Recently I tried calling my health care provider and was put on hold. What should have been a quick question about my coverage turned into an Olympiclevel test of patience. The robotic voice cheerfully greeted me with, “Please listen carefully, our menu options have changed.” Translation: prepare to enter a maze of 47 submenus with each choice responding with “We’re sorry, that option is not available.”
Then came the hold music.
Every few minutes a recorded voice chimed in with “Your call is very important to us.” Surely this must be one of the circles in Dante’s Inferno
By the time a human picked up, I had watched three reruns of Seinfeld
When I finally escaped customer service purgatory, I asked AI if there was a quicker way to reach a live person. The answer? Forget the menu. When the robot says, “Press 1 for this, 2 for that,” just hammer the # or 0 button like your sanity depends on it. The system often short-circuits and kicks you straight to a human. It feels a little like breaking the rules, but let’s be honest—the only real crime here is how long they expect you to wait on hold.

Fall in the Golden Isles means the welcome of cooler temperatures and spectacular sunsets. It’s a perfect time to enjoy football, golf, fishing, biking, and oyster roasts. Some highlights of the season include a variety of fall festivals, including the St. Simons Wine Festival and Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival, the revelry of Georgia/Florida Weekend, and the excitement of the RSM Classic PGA Tour golf tournament. With the blur of activity, it also seems to fly by in an instant. This month, we remind you to slow down and enjoy autumn before the crush of the holidays. Sit down for a leisurely meal, linger over a lazy Sunday brunch, grab coffee or cocktails with friends as often as possible. Savor every moment, one sip at a time.

The St. Simons Island Wine Festival’s VIP Wine Tasting & Auction promises an unforgettable fusion of exceptional wine, art, and music. It also promises to sell out.

these vintages, you'll be treated to an elevated charcuterie presentation crafted by the resort’s executive chef, Chris Johnson. In this way, the official kick off of the SSI Wine Festival is a true feast for the senses, designed to enhance the delicious nuances of the featured wines.
But to be clear, the VIP event is a wine tasting, the tasting will be divine. To help activate your taste buds, I tapped everyone’s favorite sommelier, Brian Henderson, from JP’s Wine and Spirits of Brunswick, the official retail partner of the SSI Wine Festival. I asked Brian to review the list of over 150 wines that will be featured on Friday evening, pick a few that he’s excited for attendees to taste, and provide a few tasting notes. After responding, “Absolutely not. There’s no way I can pick just three,” Brian was coaxed into joining me to provide you with a three-stop, virtual wine crawl, complete with his expert notes and my pedestrian responses. Let’s get going, shall we? Since I’m always keen to get the hard part over with, we’ll start our journey on the steepest “Slope.”
“Wow! What a difference a year makes.” That was my first thought when I logged into our ticketing platform the day after tickets went on sale for the Second Annual St. Simons Island Wine Festival. I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the number sold in the first 24 hours—more than five times the number we sold in the same period of time just last year. It’s a sentiment I continue to feel as each passing day brings more enthusiasm, more interested vendors, and more ticket sales!
My point is that you should go ahead and get your tickets to the SSI Wine Festival, especially if you hope to attend the VIP Wine Tasting & Auction on Friday, October 24 at The King and Prince!
The VIP event isn’t just a wine tasting; it's also a celebration of the finer things in life. You’ll have the rare opportunity to savor a curated selection of premium and rare wines, each chosen for its rich taste and exceptional quality. To perfectly complement
BH: Hailing from one of California’s steepest vineyards on a 55-degree incline, Immortal Estate’s “Slope” offers an intensely dark and rich Cabernet Sauvignon that drinks amazingly young but is capable of aging for several decades, making it, well — immortal. But it would never last that long in my house. One sniff of steak on the grill, and it’s time to sip on some “Slope” and dream about wine country.
EH: That was really extra, Brian. Thanks! And not that this is the point, but the bottle is super cool. I’m definitely going to order a few at the Wine Festival. What do you say we head down the mountain and up the coast to Willamette (Wil-LAM-ette) Valley.
BH: People either love Pinot Noir or hate Pinot Noir, but what it really comes down to is having good Pinot Noir. This classic example of Willamette Pinot Noir is jam-packed with opulent baking spice notes and earthy forest floor. The soft, velvety tannins are silky on the palate. A glass of this gem and you will burst into song and unwind.
EH: This sounds like one Pinot Noir that might finally make me a Pinot Noir person. Hey, Brian, got anything European to recommend? Eh, oui? Allons-y! Let’s head to France for some sparkling bubbles!
BH: No, not just sparkling bubbles — this is the real stuff. With bubbles so smooth, it’s time to pop this champagne and share in the groove. This is truly a champagne that celebrates authenticity and minimalism, crafted for true connoisseurs of clean, precise, and honest wines. Made exclusively from 100% Pinot Noir and with no added sugar (zero dosage), this cuvée offers a transparent and unfiltered expression of the grape and its terroir.
EH: Ah, the real deal. C’est bien! I’ll be sure to try this one. Thanks for the curated crawl, Brian. I can’t wait for the real experience in October.
Now that we've introduced you to some of our wines, let’s talk more about what else you can expect at the VIP event!
When you enter the ballroom at The King & Prince, you’ll find the ambiance to be just as impressive as the wine. The evening will be filled with the fun but understated live sounds coming from Michaele Hanneman’s keyboard. Michaele is one of my favorite local musicians, and I know she’ll provide a joyful but sophisticated backdrop for your tasting journey. But wait, there’s more! As you mingle and sip, you'll also have the chance to bid on incredible wine-centric auction lots. These lots are carefully curated to thrill both seasoned collectors and new enthusiasts, offering unique and valuable items that celebrate wine, art, island adventures, and culinary experiences.
Last year’s auction featured magnums, cases of wine, winery stays, tasting packages, and original art, including a genuine Salvador Dalí lithograph! Attendees should expect new but similar offerings, each carefully curated, beautifully packaged, cleverly named, and exquisitely presented.
“I love attending charity events and galas, but I’m rarely interested in silent auctions,” said last-
year attendee and enthusiastic bidder, Laura Castaing. “That was not the case at the SSI Wine Festival VIP event. These were truly unique auction lots, especially for wine and art lovers. I couldn’t make my way around the table fast enough!”
As the person who solicited, wrangled, and curated last year’s auction lots, I’ll say that Laura has a point. It was not your average silent auction, and the same will be true this year. The committed donations are absolutely spectacular, including the official artwork for this year’s Festival, “Toast to the Tides,” created by local artist, Megan Torello. (shown on page 25)
It’s rare that one gets to indulge in some of their favorite things while also feeling great about supporting the community. I love binge-watching White Lotus on my couch while drinking wine and eating cheese, but it’s not like I get the luxury of knowing I’m also making a difference. But as you’re delighting in the luxury and rich, delicious wines of the VIP wine tasting, you can also bask in that warm glow of knowing your participation supports a vital cause. All proceeds from the St. Simons Island Wine Festival directly benefit Glynn Visual Arts (our local nonprofit visual arts center) and the College of Coastal Georgia's Department of Hospitality, Tourism, and Culinary Arts. By raising a glass, you are investing in local arts, education, and the future of the Golden Isles!
Don't miss your chance to be part of this exclusive event. Tickets are limited for this one-of-a-kind experience. To learn more and secure your spot for an evening that truly raises the bar, visit ssiwinefestival.com

Smoke makes everything better. At least that’s what the folks at Hootenanny’s think!
When Hootenanny’s opened up their full bar this past spring at their restaurant in historic downtown Brunswick, the crew decided to see how they might use smoke to some signature cocktails. The idea was to create syrups that could be blended with bourbon, tequila, mezcal, vodka, gin, or pretty much everything on the shelf. They have experimented with house-made smoked cherry syrup, herb based simple syrups, pineapple and honey. And they are working on combinations for fall and winter involving vanilla, maple and nutmeg (think smoky espresso martini or a hot bourbon and cider).

Two of the most popular drinks have been the “I’m on Fire” and the “Bluegrass.” I’m on Fire uses a smoked honey syrup with mezcal, and when available, is garnished with charred pineapple. The
Ingredients:
2 oz. Mezcal
.75 oz. smoked honey syrup (see below)
1/2 oz. lime juice
1 oz. pineapple juice
2 dashes chili bitters
preparation:
Bluegrass mixes gin with a simple syrup muddled with fresh rosemary, hit with smoke by pitmaster Judd Foster or Tommy Bandy on the Lang smokers out back. While the Hoot uses gin for the Bluegrass cocktail, vodka works nicely too.
These drinks pair well with Hootenanny’s latest addition and passion: house-made sausages. The sausages are handmade weekly and prepped on the smokers in the wee hours of the morning through a multi-step process before making it to the daily specials board. Judd and Tommy even attended “meat school” at Iowa State University earlier this year to learn all the secrets to successful sausage-making. In fact, the team is so excited about sausage that they are working to open a stand-alone sausage-making venture, called H Street Meats, around the corner from Hootenanny’s.

Pour all into shaker with ice. Shake and serve in rocks glass.
for smoked honey syrup:
Take one 1 cup honey and dilute with 1/2 cup water. Stir until thinned out. If you have a grill or smoker, pour into ovenproof pan, cover with foil, and place on rack for 45 minutes at 200-240°F to absorb smoke. If the honey syrup is too thick, dilute with water to syrup consistency.

Ingredients:
2 oz. Gin
3/4 oz. smoked rosemary simple syrup (see below)
4 oz. Fevertree Light Tonic lime slice
preparation:

Pour gin and syrup into a glass and mix. Top with ice and tonic water and garnish with rosemary sprig and lime slice.
for smoked honey syrup:
Heat 1 cup water in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until hot, but do not bring to a boil. Add 1 cup granulated sugar and stir until fully dissolved. Keep over low heat for 10 minutes until thickened slightly. If you have a grill or smoker, pour into an ovenproof pan, cover with foil, and place on rack for 45 minutes at 200-240°F to absorb smoke. Once smoked simple syrup is ready, muddle several sprigs of rosemary into the syrup, and let sit for an hour. Let the syrup cool to room temperature before using or storing. Using a strainer and a funnel if needed, transfer the simple syrup into a glass jar, discarding rosemary, and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
To help spread the news about H Street sausages, Hootenanny’s is rolling out a brand-new sausage cart, harkening back to Judd’s trips to New York City when he was a kid. “I always had a thing for the old-fashioned hot dog carts. I’ve told Kate forever that I wanted one.” Look for the cart around the Golden Isles, including First Fridays in Brunswick and some locations planned on St. Simons Island this fall. It will also be available for private events.
Favorite sausage flavor combinations so far have included maple blueberry gouda, jalapeño cheddar, French onion, Philly cheesesteak, apple pie and cheese beef links, traditional bologna, turkey boudin, and even mac-n-cheese. Judd and Tommy are also working on a traditional hot dog, though nothing is really traditional when it comes to the food at Hootenanny’s! As Judd explains, “We start with high quality products, including our proteins, and carefully choose our spices and ratios. Working with fruits and cheeses is especially interesting, since they

have different textures and moisture content. I have done a lot of study of traditional techniques and even went to Wisconsin last year to visit sausage makers and markets that have been around for 80 years.”

Hootenanny’s serves up the sausages in house on its platters, or specialty sandwiches of the week. They are also available on the “weekly grind” plate, with housemade pimento cheese. Sausages, along with all the other menu items, are also available for takeout for your family dinner or to feed your crew wherever they are. They’re on the Hootenanny’s catering menu too, of course! To keep up with specials, holiday barbecuterie, and other pre-order offerings, stay tuned to Hootenanny’s social media and website at hootenannysbbq.com

This October marks the one-year anniversary of King City Kitchen and a big chapter in the history of 117 Mallery Street and owners Cat and Chris McDougald. If you aren’t familiar with the restaurant yet, King City Kitchen is an homage to “Old St. Simons” with contemporary flair, offering brunch and dinner in an atmosphere that’s refined yet approachable. The restaurant is steeped in history, both from the near and distant past. The name “King City” refers to its location in the heart of the first subdivision developed on St. Simons Island in the late 1800s by Mallery King. The more recent legacy that it has been built on is that of Sandcastle Café & Grill, a beloved institution for island residents and visitors alike.
Now, in the renovated and revamped space where her parents, Tim and Melissa Wellford, operated the popular village eatery for more than three decades, Cat McDougald and her husband, Chris, honor that past and bring to life their forward-thinking vision. They have created an inviting chef-driven restaurant and craft cocktail bar with open air ocean views and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. A place where locals gather, travelers return, and every meal is a flavorful celebration.

While Cat’s talents in the kitchen may be well-known, you might not be aware that she’s quite good with words as well. She recently recounted her experiences of this first year in a recent blog at whisk-and-wander.com. I was so moved by her writing that I asked her to allow me to share excerpts, and so, here’s a little bit about Cat’s journey in her own words.
“Owning a restaurant is heavier than I ever imagined, but it’s also the fulfillment of a dream I’ve carried for years… [E]ven in the hardest moments, I’m reminded that this is a dream I once only scribbled in notebooks and talked about late at night. To be here now—living it, building it, holding it together day after day—is both overwhelming and deeply sentimental. It is at once a burden and a gift.
The restaurant is both the greatest gift and the heaviest chain I’ve ever carried. I watch someone take their first bite of Dad’s crab cake recipe or the first sip of a cocktail that took hours to create and light up, and I know we’ve given them more than food—we’ve given them a memory. That makes the sleepless nights and 16-hour days feel worth it… [E]ach time I turn the key and the dining room glows back to life, I feel that flicker of pride—that against everything, we are still here.

I will not stop showing up. Because this is not just a job. It is a calling, a generational dream, a promise, a fire in my chest that refuses to let me quit.”

This is the heart you find at King City Kitchen. It’s a perfect spot to enjoy a Saturday afternoon brunch with live music on the patio or a cozy date night at an intimate table inside where screens on the brick walls display vintage photos that capture those past moments in time. Chris, Cat, and their team are committed to providing a dining experience that reflects culinary excellence, the charm and warmth of Southern hospitality, and true community connection. They offer all day breakfast and lunch Monday and Wednesday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. (Closed Tuesdays). On Thursdays through Saturdays, they stay open for cocktail hour and serve dinner from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday brunch is 8:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. Their menus offer thoughtfully sourced seasonal ingredients with bright and bold flavors, handcrafted signature dishes, modern interpretations of classic Southern fare, and weekly specials featuring fresh catch entrees and premium cuts of meat. Sandcastle devotees will be pleased to recognize some of their breakfast and lunch favorites, like the Pier Connection, Crab Benedict, and Shrimp Salad.

specially tailored to complement their changing menu items. To try these tantalizing creations, stop in for the Apertivo cocktail hour from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, when there’s special pricing on select drinks and small bites.
Cat, Chris, and their crew invite you to join them for an Anniversary Ribbon Cutting with the Brunswick Golden Isles Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, October 2 from 4:306:00 p.m. Come celebrate this village gathering place that is so much more than just a restaurant! Follow King City Kitchen on social media for menus, special events, updates, and sign up for their newsletter at kingcitykitchen.com

When it comes to drinks, this is where their playful creative spirit thrives! No matter who you find behind the bar, they’re happy to serve up your favorite coffee drink or one of the inventive rotating house-made cocktails

In an increasingly digitized world, the gentle call of the wild can often be drowned out by the constant buzz of screens. Yet, for the healthy development of our children and grandchildren, it is more important than ever to unplug and rediscover the profound joy and invaluable lessons that nature and wildlife provide. On St. Simons Island, Georgia, the St. Simons Land Trust offers a perfect, tangible example of this vital connection, protecting significant portions of the island's natural landscape for the benefit of both its wild inhabitants and its human community.
The reasons for exposing children to the outdoors are as vast and varied as the ecosystems themselves. Research has shown that time in nature reduces stress, improves concentration, and boosts overall mental and physical well-being. Unlike structured indoor play, the natural world encourages unstructured exploration, fostering creativity and imagination. A simple walk in the woods becomes a treasure hunt, a search for animal tracks, or a quiet moment to observe a bird building its nest. This type of self-directed play builds confidence and problem-solving skills, teaching children to manage their own actions engage with their surroundings in inventive ways.
Throughout history, island residents and visitors have experienced the benefits of being outdoors, and those benefits are still readily available today, thanks to the dedicated work of the St. Simons Land Trust. Since its founding in 2000, the organization has protected nearly 1,400 acres, about 14% of the island. These protected properties, including iconic spaces and nature preserves, are not just for wildlife; they are for the community. They serve as green oases, providing clean air and water, mitigating the effects of storms, and offering refuge from the pressures of modern life.
When utilizing the St. Simons Land Trust’s Passport to Preservation, children and families will discover the importance of preserving and protecting the forests, marshlands, and streams of a barrier island.
SCAVENGER HUNTS • FUN FACTS • NATURE LOG
A prime example is the 644-acre Cannon's Point Preserve, a remarkable tract of maritime forest and marsh at the island's north end. This preserve is a living classroom, rich with both natural and cultural history. Here, families can hike or bike miles of trails, explore the ruins of an 18th-century plantation, and observe the abundant wildlife that calls this place home— from native and migratory birds to the subtle movements of fish and crabs in the tidal creeks. The preservation of this land ensures that these diverse habitats, which are part of the larger, globally significant Altamaha River delta, remain intact for generations to come.
Protected lands like those managed by the Land Trust are crucial for the health of both humans and the planet. For wildlife, they provide essential corridors for movement, safe havens for nesting and feeding, and a buffer against the pressures of development. For humans, they are not only places of recreation and respite, but also vital components of a healthy community, supporting local economies through eco-tourism and outdoor activities. By preserving these natural spaces, we are investing in the long-term health and sustainability of our shared environment.

By making a conscious effort to introduce children to nature, parents and grandparents are not only giving them the gift of health and happiness but also nurturing a sense of stewardship for the planet.

This month, the St. Simons Land Trust is once again providing a special opportunity for families to connect with nature in a fun and educational way. On Saturday, October 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the organization will host its annual Family Day event at Cannon's Point Preserve. This free event is a perfect introduction to the wonders of the natural world, with a variety of activities designed to engage young explorers. Attendees can look forward to educational booths and presentations, live animal demonstrations, and family-friendly guided walks that will reveal the hidden beauty of the maritime forest. There will also be opportunities for fishing and other hands-on activities, ensuring that every child finds a way to spark their curiosity and an appreciation for the wild spaces of St. Simons Island.
By making a conscious effort to introduce children to nature, parents and grandparents are not only giving them the gift of health and happiness but also nurturing a sense of stewardship for the planet. The lessons learned while paddling through a creek, identifying a bird by its call, or simply feeling the forest floor beneath their feet are lessons that will last a lifetime. Events like the St. Simons Land Trust Family Day are a fantastic starting point, a chance to create lasting memories while fostering the next generation of environmental champions.

When preparing to sell a property, owners should identify areas requiring improvement to ensure the home is market ready. As you develop your checklist, remember to include your la For many, fall is a time for winding down, for preparing for the dormancy of winter. But for landscape professionals, fall signals the start of one of the most opportune periods for planting. Autumn is widely regarded as the best time for landscape planting—a truth rooted in horticultural science, ecological principles, and practical experience.
Fall’s cooler air temperatures are paired with the soil’s warmth and create ideal conditions for root growth. While top growth slows or ceases, plants direct energy underground, establishing strong root systems without the stress of producing leaves, flowers, or fruit. Autumn often brings more consistent rainfall and lower evaporation rates. The reduced heat means that soil moisture is retained for longer periods, creating a less stressful environment for young plants. Many common pests and diseases slow down or go dormant during these cooler months, giving newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials a reprieve from the struggles that accompany spring and summer planting. There is also reduced competition from weeds and invasive species, along with fewer insects and pathogens that affect young plants.
BY MISTY JOHNS, COASTAL GREENERY, INC.
Autumn offers practical advantages for landscape planting. Garden centers typically increase their inventory of trees, shrubs, and perennials during the fall. Many plants are produced specifically for fall sales, and plants placed in the ground during this time tend to begin growth in early spring, while those planted in spring may require more time to establish.
While many plants benefit from fall installation, some are especially suitable for establishment in these months.
G Trees and Shrubs – Planting deciduous trees, like oaks and maples, and shrubs such as oakleaf hydrangea, in the fall promotes strong root growth. Most evergreens will also do well but be cautious in very cold areas.
G Perennials - Most perennial flowers, such as black-eyed Susan, salvia, and hosta, will settle in nicely before the dormancy of winter and emerge strong in spring.
G Bulbs – Now is the time for planting springflowering bulbs like amaryllis, ginger, gladiolus, caladium and daylily. These bulbs tolerate and perform well in the mild Southern winters.
G Turf – Cool-season grasses, such as ryegrass and fescue, should be seeded in fall to take advantage of warm soils and cooler air.

1. Timing is key! Plant early enough in the season to allow roots to establish before the first hard freeze.
2. Prepare planting sites thoroughly. Remove weeds, amend soil as needed, and dig generous planting holes. Good soil contact is vital for root establishment.
3. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of new plantings to regulate soil temperature and retain moisture. Water thoroughly after planting and keep an eye on rainfall. Plants should not dry out before winter.
4. In areas with harsh winters, consider protecting sensitive plants. Use burlap wraps or windbreaks until they are fully established.
Fall is a season of great potential for the landscaper willing to plant and plan. The science is clear, and the practical benefits are equally convincing. Whether you’re planting a single tree, revitalizing your flower beds, or transforming your entire landscape, choosing the fall season allows your landscape the opportunity to thrive. As leaves fall and the ground cools, now is the ideal time for landscape planting! Happy Planting!

BY SOUTHEAST GEORGIA HEALTH SYSTEM
Asupervisory training instructor with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in Brunswick, Dicy Peppers has more than 20 years of experience teaching TSA agents strategies and techniques to successfully detect security threats in the nation’s transportation systems. Similar to her professional life, Ms. Peppers understands the importance of annual mammograms to detect breast cancer. She has two aunts, her mother’s sisters, who were diagnosed with breast cancer and have been cancer-free for almost 30 years, thanks to early detection. So, each year, she faithfully attends her mammogram appointment.
Mammograms take only a few minutes to perform, but they could add years to a woman’s life. That’s because regular mammograms can detect the disease early—before it generates symptoms, like a lump—and when it’s easier to successfully treat.
“Sometimes, just before the appointment, I dread the discomfort of a mammogram,”

says Ms. Peppers. “But, seriously, it’s just a momentary squeeze that’s over and done with so quickly that it’s not worth worrying about. There’s no pain afterwards and knowing that early detection of breast cancer can make a difference for treatment outcomes is well worth the squeeze.”
The commitment that Ms. Peppers has to annual mammogram screenings served her well when, shortly after undergoing a routine mammogram in 2023, she was asked to return to the Southeast Georgia Health System Breast Care Center for a follow-up procedure. During an appointment with Stephen G. Barrett, MD, a board-certified general surgeon who specializes in breast health with Southeast Georgia Physician Associates - General & Vascular Surgery, she received a diagnosis of early-stage breast cancer.
“I was in shock and immediately began praying about it,” Ms. Peppers shares. “I believe the Lord was walking with me during my journey and led me to Dr. Barrett. He and his team were so sweet and gentle, but also direct and informative. I can’t say enough good things about them.”
Ms. Peppers’ treatment plan included both chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Timothy A. Jamieson, MD, PhD, oversaw Ms. Peppers’ radiation treatments, which were noninvasive and painless. “TrueBeam provides radiation with speed and precision to treat tumors, particularly those in challenging locations,” explains Dr. Jamieson. “Ms. Peppers was able to continue working, traveling and participating in daily activities throughout her radiation therapy.”

Ms. Peppers’ final radiation treatment took place in August 2024. Recent imaging scans are clear, and she is now in remission. She concludes, “I had such a wonderful team taking care of me. I recommend them to anyone who receives a breast cancer diagnosis. But another important thing that helped to keep me positive and I recommend to others, was that while I was willing to accept a diagnosis of breast cancer, I refused to allow the diagnosis to become who I am.”

Getting screened for breast cancer on a regular basis is important. Southeast Georgia Health System offers 3D mammograms, an advanced technology that can detect breast cancer when it’s small and before a lump can be felt—which is when treatment often works best.

Retirement is a significant transition, and it can bring both challenges and opportunities for women who have spent several years focused on their careers. For women approaching retirement age, it is crucial to consider various tips and strategies to ensure a smooth and fulfilling transition. An elegant pivot from work like to life of one’s own requires careful consideration. A woman retiring at 65 may live another two decades or more. That’s not only a long time to finance, it’s also a long time to figure out how to fill your life with meaningful activities.1
Retirement can change a woman’s identity, especially those who have worked in the same profession for many years. Exploring new interests and finding a new sense of purpose could involve taking on a new job title, pursuing a passion, or simply embracing new hobbies and activities. But you’ll enjoy your retirement more if you start thinking about establishing the new “you” independent of your career.
One of the first steps to take when preparing for retirement is to address financial matters. This includes reviewing your estate strategy, getting all necessary documents in order, and having contingency plans in place for emergencies and the unexpected. Consider meeting with a financial professional before and after retiring to help establish that the appropriate steps are being taken.
For women concerned about their savings or Social Security benefits, consider parttime work, working from home, or starting a small business to provide income and social interaction. You have the choice here to ease into retirement while still keeping active and engaged. The Department of Labor says that women are more likely to work part time in retirement. Many part-time jobs may not have retirement plans, making it necessary to plan accordingly.1
Another option for women is volunteering. Many miss the engagement and challenge of the workforce, and volunteering allows them to dedicate their time to helping others while gaining personal fulfillment. Volunteering can be a way to stay connected to the community while making a difference.
Now that you have the time, why not try something new? Taking classes is also a way for women to continue learning and growing in retirement. Many courses covering various

topics are available online or in person, allowing you to explore new interests and stay mentally active.
Beyond addressing financial matters and finding ways to stay engaged, women must prioritize their health in retirement. This includes eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and getting the right amount of sleep.
But your overall health includes more than just your physical body. Social engagement is also essential for happiness and health. Even for natural homebodies, spending time with others can have a positive impact.
It's essential to remember that adjusting to retirement takes time. Transitioning into retirement can be a significant change for women who have dedicated many years to their careers. However, with careful preparation and consideration, women can make the most of this new phase of life. By addressing financial matters, finding ways to stay engaged, prioritizing health, and exploring new interests, women can embrace retirement as a new beginning and enjoy a fulfilling and rewarding experience. It is normal to experience a range of emotions after retirement, but these feelings will likely change over time. Being patient with yourself and understanding that it is a process may help alleviate frustration.

October has finally arrived, and it marks the arrival of the St. Simons Island Wine Festival. The event, highly anticipated by both local wine enthusiasts and visitors, offers a world-class experience with hand-curated selections and the opportunity to learn about these tempting tipples by wine professionals from around the globe. While details about the event were shared earlier in this issue, here are several expert recommendations to help you maximize your enjoyment of this fun-filled weekend while tasting your way through hundreds of wines.
Whether you’re a seasoned festivalgoer or planning your first visit, making the most of any wine festival weekend starts with a little strategy. I recommend taking a few minutes to scan through the wine line up. Look at which wineries/producers will be present and make a list of those you are most eager to taste. I like to pick ten or so that I absolutely must taste while my palate is fresh. Now that you have cherry-picked the list, it’s time to grab that glass and get moving. Speaking of your glass, it is best to only hold it by the stem, not the bowl.
This prevents your hand from altering the temperature while keeping your fingerprints off the glass, allowing you to admire the wine’s color through a clear goblet.

I’m sure everyone is familiar with the rhetorical question, “Does a Sommelier spit in the woods?” Absolutely they do! Wine festivals are about sampling, not slamming. Take small swigs, savor the flavors, and pace yourself. Spittoons are provided for good reason. Don’t be shy, they are there to help you taste more without overindulging. If you’re unsure how to use one, a discreet lean and spit will do the trick. With so many wines to taste, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement. Take regular breaks and remember to drink water. This will ensure your palate stays fresh and you remain energized for the festivities.
One of the cardinal sins at wine festivals is wearing perfume or cologne. Wine tasting is a deeply aromatic experience. Strong scents

can interfere with your (and others’) ability to detect the nuanced bouquet of a wine. A whiff of essential oil or citrus musk might overpower delicate notes of elderflower or wet stone. Skip the spritz, save the patchouli for a Phish concert and let the wine be the star of the olfactory show.
Now that the SSI Wine festival is nearly here, let yourself be swept into its festive spirit. Gather your friends, sharpen your palate, and embrace the grapes. You may just discover that October is not only your new favorite month, but the beginning of cherished traditions for years to come. We will see you there!
Comprehensive details about the festival are available at ssiwinefestival.com.

The Coastal Symphony of Georgia begins a season of musical exploration with the Expressions concert on October 6. The four scheduled classical concerts will explore “a wild orchestra ride,” musical sketches, a child’s view of heaven, old favorites, and rediscovered pieces. “This is a regional orchestra that stands out above the many others I have worked with because of the high-level of playing, as well as the adaptability to varying styles – classical, romantic, modern, jazzy – they really can do it all!” says Music Director and Conductor Michelle Merrill. More intimate SoundBites with smaller ensembles, cocktails, and conversation with the musicians will take place at various venues around town. The Musical Mentors program is underway in area schools, and a gala event is planned for late winter. The season will culminate with a performance at the Center for the Arts on the College of Georgia campus as part of its Grand Opening in May. Concert tickets are available at coastalsymphonyofgeorgia.org

October 18th is International Archaeology Day, and like any well-researched topic, telling a more complete story about the past sometimes requires digging not just into archives but into the ground beneath our feet. This is precisely what the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s (CGHS) Archaeology Lab has been doing since its founding in 2011, as parts of our region’s history can only be uncovered through archaeology.
Located inside the World War II Home Front Museum on St. Simons Island, CGHS’s Archaeology Lab is overseen by Dr. Aaron Ellrich. It houses more than 50 collections from archaeological surveys and excavations across the region, representing over 4,000 years of Coastal Georgia history. Most of these collections are curated in trust on behalf of the St. Simons Land Trust. The Land Trust owns the artifacts, and the Lab cares for them as part of an ongoing relationship. The curated artifacts, ranging from Native American pottery and

British tableware to plantation-era tools, offer a tangible connection to the people who once lived and labored along our coast.
Some of the earliest pottery in North America was produced on our coast. A remarkable example in CGHS’s collection is a partially reconstructed vessel of St. Simons pottery (ARTIFACT A) Approximately 3,000 to 4,000 years old, this Native American vessel features punctated designs and reflects some of the region’s oldest craftsmanship.
Other artifacts recovered through archaeology include European ceramics like pearlware. Popular from the late 18th to the mid-19th century, pearlware was a common feature on dining tables of the past (ARTIFACT B) Often decorated with transfer print designs, platters, like the partially complete one featured here, reveal how households once used a range of tableware much like we do today.
Beyond the dining table, archaeology also reveals the labor that sustained daily life. Iron hoes, for instance, were essential tools on plantations across Coastal Georgia (ARTIFACT C) Implements like these serve as poignant reminders of the labor and legacies of enslaved individuals who drove much of the region’s antebellum economy.
Lastly, small finds like buttons offer glimpses into clothing and identity. CGHS’s collection includes a range, from plain to symbolic, such as those tied to military service and political events. One artillery regiment button, dating
between 1810 and 1830, bears the stamp “Extra Rich,” indicating a high-quality gilt finish (ARTIFACT D) Another, from 1829, commemorates Andrew Jackson’s presidential inauguration and is an early example of political memorabilia (ARTIFACT E)
But CGHS’s Lab is more than a repository. Under Dr. Ellrich’s leadership, it provides services in cultural resource management, artifact conservation, and outreach. It also offers hands-on opportunities. Lab volunteers help uncover and preserve history by assisting with artifact processing, cataloging, conservation, and, when possible, excavation.
So, as we move through October, consider how archaeology shapes our understanding of the past and how each new discovery brings us closer to the lives of those who shaped the world we live in today.
