I love Thanksgiving—until someone drops a conversational stink bomb at the table. Luckily, I’ve mastered the art of distraction. Here are five hilarious tactics you can borrow when your family reunion turns into an interrogation.
The second someone says “politics,” you lean in and declare, “Wow, this stuffing is AMAZING. What’s in it? Sage? Magic?” Everyone will happily debate breadcrumbs instead of ballots.
Interrupt with, “Can we just take a moment to appreciate how juicy this turkey is?” Say it like you’re nominating it for an Oscar. Instant topic change!
When someone mentions money, burst into a dramatic coughing fit. Nothing redirects faster than Grandma rushing for the ginger ale.
If the table gets tense, grab your glass and announce, “Let’s toast to pie! Because pie has never once judged us.” Everyone will laugh, clink, and forget who started the argument.
Whenever things get dicey, shout: “Did you see that play?!” Nobody even cares if there’s a game on—they’ll start arguing about football instead, which is the only acceptable fight at Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is all about gratitude and here at Elegant Island Living, we’re especially thankful for our loyal readers who have shared this journey with us for 23 wonderful years.

At the College of Coastal Georgia, success ripples outward, across classrooms, families, and businesses, reaching every corner of the Golden Isles. In 2025, those ripples grew stronger than ever, fueled by record enrollment, groundbreaking programs, and a steadfast commitment to student success.
This academic year opened with remarkable energy. Enrollment surged past 3,700 students, the highest in the College’s history, and every on-campus housing space was filled. The University System of Georgia recognized this achievement with the Chancellor’s Cup for enrollment growth, marking an unprecedented fourth consecutive win. Beyond numbers, the accolade affirms Coastal Georgia’s welcoming, studentcentered culture that continues to attract learners from across the state and beyond.
The College’s growth is also shaping the region’s future workforce. In June, Coastal Georgia broke ground on a major expansion of Miriam and Hugh Nunnally Hall, home to the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. Featuring advanced simulation labs and training spaces, the new wing will allow the College to graduate more nurses and healthcare professionals, supporting one of the Golden Isles’ largest economic sectors and ensuring stronger community healthcare for years to come.

The ripple effects of education are felt throughout the community. Coastal Georgia celebrated the first graduates of its innovative Paraprofessional to Certified Teacher Pathway program this spring, directly placing new teachers in local classrooms. The graduating class included 66 first-generation students, 103 non-traditional learners, and 21 militaryaffiliated graduates, each a testament to the College’s mission of access and opportunity.

Beyond academics, Mariners are making waves through service, athletics, and leadership. Students contributed more than 9,000 service-learning hours to community projects. On the national stage, the Cyber Defense Club rose 60 spots in rankings, and five students completed the rigorous Honors Program. Six golf players earned All-American Scholar honors, and standout softball player Rylee Mills was nominated for The Sun Conference’s prestigious A.O. Duer Scholarship Award.
Last fall marked a historic milestone: the 60th anniversary of the College’s first classes. What began as a small two-year school has since evolved into a vibrant four-year public institution, fueling more than $100 million annually into the local economy while also enriching the cultural and civic fabric of the Golden Isles. From advancing healthcare initiatives to opening a new Center for the Arts, each achievement continues to send ripples of progress throughout the community.
At Coastal Georgia, one student’s success inspires peers, strengthens families, fuels businesses, and uplifts communities. The ripple begins here, but its impact reaches far beyond campus, shaping the future of our region.
At Coastal Georgia, every success story is a ripple that transforms lives and strengthens communities. Through the Navigator Society, donors giving $1,000 or more help chart the course, ensuring programs in healthcare, education, and beyond meet critical community needs. With 80% of graduates staying local, Navigators ensure the ripple continues to grow. Learn more at ccga.edu/navigator

From casual sports attire for game day or an afternoon on the links, crisp looks for an evening on the town, or outerwear fit for adventure, Steve has it covered.
The five years that Bullington SSI has been open is just a drop in the bucket, compared to Steve’s five decades of experience in the fashion industry, including 22 years at Ralph Lauren and 20 years at the Atlanta Apparel Mart. It

was that vast experience that led him to create his own line of classic, traditional menswear that never goes out of style. Steve has always been keenly aware of what his customers desire and is dedicated to providing them with the top-notch quality they expect. The hallmark of the Bullington line of clothing is laid-back style with perfect fit. The many merchandising awards that Steve has received over the years are evidence of his talent and skill. Fall and winter wardrobe essentials are also well-stocked at Bullington SSI with plenty of quilted vests, warm sweaters, and soft brushed-cotton flannels that can easily be layered on chilly days and for outdoor adventures in cooler climates. Steve notes that when you’re looking for warmth without bulk, the Cumberland field vests and jackets are ideal. BY MISTY JOHNS, COASTAL GREENERY, INC.
Thanksgiving is a time-honored holiday marked by gratitude, gathering, and the celebration of the harvest. One of the most recognizable aspects of Thanksgiving décor is the use of plant material. As the holiday centers on nature’s abundance, botanical elements are an essential part of creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Incorporating these elements draws on the traditions of the harvest season, filling your space with color, texture, and a spirit of gratitude.
Thanksgiving occurs in late fall, a time when many crops are harvested. Pumpkins, bundles of wheat, and cornucopias filled with fruits and vegetables, not only serve as a reminder of the agricultural roots of the holiday, but also symbolize abundance, prosperity, and gratitude for nature’s gifts. Decorating with these natural elements also helps create a sense of connection to the changing seasons. Fall’s earthy colors like deep oranges, rich reds, and golden yellows are reflected in leaves, berries and seasonal flowers. Incorporate some of the following key elements indoors to bring the beauty of the outdoors inside and create a cozy, festive environment for gatherings with family and friends.
These harvest symbols are frequently utilized in Thanksgiving table settings and entryway arrangements. Available in various colors and sizes, they enhance centerpieces and displays with rustic charm and unique style. For a more personalized and festive touch, consider painting or carving pumpkins and gourds, or arranging them in baskets alongside chrysanthemums and sunflowers.
Tall corn stalks provide height and structure to outdoor Thanksgiving decorations. Indian corn, with its multihued kernels, brings a vibrant touch of color to wreaths and garlands.
Wheat stalks, pampas grass, and other dried ornamental grasses, lend a soft, natural feel and a hint of elegance. They pair beautifully with

seasonal flowers or can be bundled for a simple yet striking mantelpiece accent.
Hay or straw bales are well-suited for outdoor environments, providing stable foundations for decorative arrangements while enhancing porches and patios with a timeless seasonal atmosphere.
Maple and oak leaves, whether fresh or preserved, introduce rich shades of red, orange, and yellow into interior spaces. Utilized in garlands, centerpieces, or arranged along tables, they effectively convey the distinctive atmosphere of the season.
Holly or other berry-laden branches introduce poignant pops of color and an organic touch, ideal for festive wreaths and table décor.
Chrysanthemums, sunflowers, and marigolds are seasonal favorites. Their bold hues and full blooms add texture to bouquets and arrangements while reflecting the warmth of the season.
Using autumn’s natural elements like pumpkins, oak leaves, dried ornamental grasses, chrysanthemums, and sunflowers for Thanksgiving decorations is a longstanding tradition. Honoring the holiday’s history in this way allows us to connect with nature and express our gratitude for its abundance, while adding warmth and beauty to celebrations with loved ones.
Happy Thanksgiving!

BY ZOE HERRINGTON, FOUNDER
About a month ago, a third-generation customer had an appointment with me to remake her grandmother's ring. I had known this young lady since she was born, so it was an honor she chose me to help her. When she arrived, her excitement was palpable. Her dream man and now her dream ring being made from a timeless family treasure.
She started explaining the fond memories of her grandmother and their time together when she was growing up. She said, “This was my grandmother’s pride and joy.” I took one look at the ring and replied, “I can see why. Can you tell me your vision of what you would like to do?” She quickly responded, “You always have the best so I would your input.” I said, “You are in for the rarest

all treats today, young lady!” One of our vendors had just released their 5” thick 2025 catalog and I was able to look up the LATEST designs in wedding bands. When I turned the book to show her a picture, her eyes filled with tears—what I had found was a ring so close to hers that it could have been made by the same factory.
She was astounded, because she was holding a treasured heirloom that she felt compelled to change just to be up with the latest trends! Our eyes locked, hers with disbelief, mine with sheer joy. “My friends said this ring was not in style,” she told me. I replied, “Not in their style maybe. Their rings are now out of style.” I explained, “When a vendor of magnitude spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on molds, they have done their homework five years forward. costs the factories a lot of money to make a mold, print it, publish it and to send it out. This is a science to them, since they make molds for jewelers, they have seen enough variations to let them know when they have a winning item! All we need to do is bring life back into this ring by making it look brand new. It will take some work, but you have your dream ring and with our workmanship and quality we can make your ring as beautiful as when your grandmother walked down the aisle. Since gold is a soft metal, we will put a new back on it and retip all of the diamonds making them as secure as they once were.”

asked whether I was surprised at the comeback of her treasure, and my simple response: “Great style never goes out of favor.” When I inquired about any vision she might have had in mind before coming in, she told me about the anxiety she’d felt, because she connected so many memories with the ring. I asked her to share some, expecting a pause, but they came rushing out with her excitement.
A beautiful heirloom is now perfect for a beautiful new beginning. Never underestimate the value of your heart’s true desire or the importance of legacy.
"Without a doubt, Noble House Jewelry is the only discounted, high-end jewelry store on the Island. Zoe suggests you shop and compare. She's right.”

Lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, claiming more lives each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. In recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Southeast Georgia Health System is working to raise awareness about lung cancer and the importance of early detection through screening.
“Lung cancer often develops silently,” says Nicholas Buchanan, MD, internal medicine physician with Southeast Georgia Physician Associates–Primary Care. “By the time a person shows symptoms—like a persistent cough, chest pain or coughing up blood—the

disease is often already in an advanced stage. That’s why screening is so important for those at risk.”
Smoking is the greatest risk factor for lung cancer. “If you are a current or former smoker, your risk of developing lung cancer can be up to 25 times higher than that of someone who has never smoked,” Buchanan explains. Other factors include age, family history, prior radiation exposure, certain occupational exposures and chronic lung diseases such as COPD.
For high-risk individuals, a low-dose CT scan can detect lung cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. “Low-dose CT scans have changed the game,” says Buchanan. “They allow us to find lung cancer before it spreads, and the radiation exposure is minimal—about one-eighth that of a regular CT scan.”
The Southeast Georgia Health System Brunswick and Camden campuses, along with the MRI & Imaging Center, are designated Lung Cancer Screening Centers by the American College of Radiology, which means they meet high standards for imaging and patient care.
“It’s reassuring to have this level of screening available locally,” Buchanan notes. “Many people delay care because they think it’s not accessible or they’re afraid of the process. But this is a simple, non-invasive scan that could potentially save your life.”
Screening is generally recommended for adults aged 50 to 80 who have a 30-pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. A pack-year is defined as smoking one pack of cigarettes per day for a year. “If you’re unsure whether you qualify, the best place to start is with your primary care provider,” says Buchanan. “We can assess your risk and help you understand your options.”
He also points out that many insurance providers cover the cost of lung cancer screenings for eligible patients. “People are often surprised to find that these screenings are covered,” he says. “That financial accessibility removes one of the biggest barriers to early detection.”
Ultimately, Buchanan emphasizes that early action is key. “The sooner we find lung cancer, the more treatment options we have—and the better the outcomes. Screening saves lives. If you're at risk, don’t wait for symptoms. Talk to your doctor and get screened.”

BY CINDI PHILLIPS, PRESIDENT/FINANCIAL PROFESSIONAL, FINANCIAL FREEDOM ENTERPRISES, INC.
The reason withdrawals from a Traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) prior to age 59½ are generally subject to a 10% tax penalty is that policymakers wanted to create a disincentive to use these savings for anything other than retirement.1
Yet, policymakers also recognize that life can present more pressing circumstances that require access to these savings. In appreciation of this, the list of withdrawals that may be taken from a Traditional IRA without incurring a 10% early withdrawal penalty has grown over the years.
Outlined below are the circumstances under which individuals may withdraw from an IRA prior to age 59½ without a tax penalty. Ordinary income tax, however, is generally due on such distributions.
If you die prior to age 59½, the beneficiary(ies) of your IRA may withdraw the assets without penalty. However, if your beneficiary decides to roll it over into his or her IRA, he or she will forfeit this exception.2,3
2. Disability
Disability is defined as being unable to engage in any gainful employment because of a mental or physical disability, as determined by a physician.4
3. Substantially Equal Periodic Payments
You are permitted to take a series of substantially equal periodic payments and avoid the tax penalty, provided they continue
until you turn 59½ or for five years, whichever is later. The calculation of such payments is complicated, and individuals should consider speaking with a qualified tax professional.4
4. Home Purchase
You may take up to $10,000 toward the purchase of your first home. (According to the Internal Revenue Service, you also qualify if you have not owned a home in the last two years.) This is a lifetime limit.
5. Unreimbursed Medical Expenses
This exception covers medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.
6. Medical Insurance
This permits the unemployed to pay for medical insurance if they meet specific criteria.
7. Higher Education Expenses
Funds may be used to cover higher education expenses for you, your spouse, children, or grandchildren. Only certain institutions and associated expenses are permitted.
8. IRS Levy
Funds may be used to pay an IRS levy.

Notes:
1. In most circumstances, once you reach age 73, you must begin taking required minimum distributions from a Traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA). You may continue to contribute to a Traditional IRA past age 70½ as long as you meet the earnedincome requirement.
2. Distributions to a non-spouse beneficiary are generally required to be distributed by the end of the 10th calendar year following the year of the Individual Retirement Account (IRA) owner’s death. The new rule does not require the non-spouse beneficiary to take withdrawals during the 10-year period. But all the money must be withdrawn by the end of the 10th calendar year following the inheritance. A surviving spouse of the IRA owner, disabled or chronically ill individuals, individuals who are not more than 10 years younger than the IRA owner, and a child of the IRA owner who has not reached the age of majority may have other minimum distribution requirements.

BY BRIAN HENDERSON, CSW, FWS, ADVANCED SOMMELIER, JP’S WINE & SPIRITS
Holidays are a time of joy, generosity, and let’s be honest a fair amount of stress. Between gift shopping, meal planning, and navigating family dynamics, choosing the right wine can feel like one more puzzle piece to fit. But fear not, with a little strategy and a splash of curiosity, buying holiday wine can be one of the season’s most delightful tasks.
Not all holiday gatherings are created equal. A cozy dinner with close friends calls for something different than a frenzied congregation of office partygoers or a formal family feast. For intimate meals, consider wines that invite conversation. Think small production Pinot Noir, a thought-provoking Chenin Blanc, or a funky pét-nat. For larger crowds, opt for versatile, crowd-pleasing bottles like Côtes du Rhône, Prosecco, or a crisp Sauvignon Blanc.
Holiday menus are notoriously eclectic: turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce, latkes, roast beef, and more. Instead of chasing the perfect pairings — aim for wines with balance and flexibility. Medium-bodied reds with good acidity such as Gamay, Barbera, or Grenache can handle a variety of flavors. For whites, look to unoaked Chardonnay, Riesling (dry or off dry), or Grüner Veltliner. And do not forget every sommelier’s Swiss army knife of the wine world, sparkling wine. It is a pairing powerhouse and a festive mood-setter.

It is not necessary to make extravagant purchases to enjoy quality wine. Numerous regions and lesser-known grape varieties present excellent value options. Exploring alternatives beyond the mainstream selections can yield affordable wines with substantial character. Portuguese red blends, Italian Verdicchio, and French Aligoté provide noteworthy complexity at accessible prices. Additionally, purchasing wine by the case may offer discounts and help ensure an adequate supply for unexpected guests.
Do not overlook the world of non-alcoholic options. Whether you are hosting guests who abstain, pacing yourself between parties, or simply curious about the booming area of zero-proof beverages, non-alcoholic wines and festive alternatives deserve a spot on your holiday table. Today’s options go far beyond grape juice. De-alcoholized wine, spirits and

botanical-infused aperitifs can mimic the complexity of traditional cocktails. Offering a thoughtful non-alcoholic selection ensures everyone feels included in the celebration, and it is a savvy move for hosts who want to keep spirits high without overindulging.
Some final tips on holiday drink buying:
• Shop early to avoid supply hiccups and last-minute widespread panic.
Do not be afraid to try something new. The holidays are a perfect time to have a glass of wine and catch your breath.
• Come visit your favorite neighborhood wine nerd and ask about our hidden gems.
Whether you are hosting, gifting, or simply sipping by the fire, the right wine can elevate every moment. Cheers to a season filled with flavor, laughter, and well-chosen bottles.

The paintings of Linda Perno Dotter will be showcased in the Jekyll Island Art Association’s November exhibit at Goodyear Cottage. Originally from Monmouth County, New Jersey, Linda discovered her creative passion early in life and refined her artistic skills at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art. She has received commissions for tourist publications, logo design, and personalized oil paintings held in personal and corporate collections. Now living on the Georgia coast, Linda draws daily inspiration from the area’s rich wildlife, vibrant colors, and ever-changing light. An active member of Jekyll Island Art Association, McIntosh Art Association, and Georgia Coastal Artists Guild, Linda strives to capture a moment, a memory, a place, or a person with atmosphere and emotion. Her work reflects both technical skill and a deep connection to her surroundings. The exhibit is on display November 1-24, with a Meet the Artist reception on Sunday, November 2 from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Art lovers are invited to a special evening of creativity and community on Friday, November 14, as Anderson Fine Art Gallery and ArtTrends Gallery team up for a joint event featuring two dynamic pop-up shows. At Anderson Fine Art Gallery, St. Simons Island resident Jane Hartley will present Music in the Air, a collection celebrated for its expressive style and lively compositions. It was inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s 1952 book Player Piano in The Age of Automation . Just steps away, ArtTrends Gallery will highlight the vibrant work of Ken Wallin, whose colorful coastal and landscape paintings capture the essence of the Golden Isles. This one-night-only event invites guests to enjoy two unique artistic visions while strolling between the neighboring galleries. Meet the artists, mingle with fellow art enthusiasts, and celebrate the thriving art scene on St. Simons Island.

The weather is getting (ever so slightly) colder, plenty of leftover Halloween candy is hanging around, and the holidays are quickly approaching. Is there a better time of year to curl up with a good mystery?
The Little Theater of Brunswick certainly didn’t think so. From November 20 to 24, 1957, the playhouse staged its own whodunit, drawing visitors to its production of the murder mystery Laura by way of advertisements made to look like newspaper headlines. The production was based on the novel of the same name by Vera Caspary, originally published as a serial in 1942. Laura soon found additional popularity as an Armed Services Edition, one of thousands of titles made into small paperbacks for distribution to the American military during World War II. After the war, Caspary collaborated with playwright George Sklar on the theatrical version of her novel. Both writers’ names appear on the Little Theater’s advertisement.
Far from a typical poster, this promotional piece featured four full pages of information on the production. Faux articles gave intriguing insight into the plot, and the cast biographies highlighted Kenneth Williams, the new “speech and dramatic teacher at Glynn Academy,” who played the detective. Several other members of the cast had previously appeared in multiple Little Theater productions. The back pages of the “newspaper” overflowed with well-wishes from local businesses, McGarvey’s Furniture, the Tait Floral Company, and City Drug Store on Newcastle Street among them.
The late 1950s were exciting years for the Little Theater. Founded on April 21, 1931, the organization spent its earliest years putting on productions in Glynn Academy’s Memorial Auditorium. Its very first show, Captain Applejack, included a set that rocked like a real sailing ship. Promotional materials for Laura noted that, for decades, the Little Theater “had no established headquarters,” instead operating out of school auditoriums, church parish halls, and even the Oglethorpe Hotel. In 1954, the theater bought the parish house of St. James Lutheran Church. The building was then moved from Gloucester Street to 609 Grant Street, the new home of a thriving playhouse with the motto Nil Desperandum – “Never Despair.”
This month’s featured images from the collections of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society are two pages from the newspaper-style advertisement for the Little Theater of Brunswick’s production of Laura held from November 20-24, 1957.
