FIELD VISIT TO EXPLORE LOCAL MATERIALS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

As part of the preparation for the upcoming Earth Building Technology workshops, Dr. Nermine Abdel Halim and Dr. Amgad Fahmy visited the Fatma Talal Hassanen Institution for Arts and Pottery. The visit aimed to explore local Saudi materials and learn from traditional pottery techniques that can inspire sustainable building practices. 30 August 2025

THE FUTURE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM IN SAUDI ARABIA: THE KING SALMAN CHARTER

On September 4, 2025, a lecture titled “The Future of Architecture and Urbanism in Saudi Arabia: The King Salman Charter” was presented as part of the Architecture Department Guest Lecture Series. The lecture was delivered by Arch. Alia Al Thunayyan, an architectural and cultural specialist and KSUCA Ambassador. Organized by Prof. Mohamed Fekry, the lecture focused on the King Salman Charter and its role in shaping the future of architecture and urban development in Saudi Arabia. It highlighted the importance of preserving cultural identity while promoting sustainable and modern urban design

EFFAT ALUMNI SHINE ON THE GLOBAL STAGE

Effat University proudly celebrates its alumna Salwa Samargandi, winner of the World Architecture (WA) Award in the Architecture – Realised Projects category. Her firm, SAL Architects, was recognized for its outstanding design excellence and innovative architectural approach. This prestigious achievement reflects Salwa Samargandi’s commitment to highquality, thoughtful design and highlights the strong academic foundation provided by Effat University. It also underscores the growing global presence and impact of Effat graduates, who continue to contribute creatively and professionally to the field of architecture worldwide. 16 September 2025

CAPSTONE 2 STUDENTS EXPLORE REAL-WORLD ARCHITECTURE

Students of the Capstone 2 course at Effat University recently visited Al-Usayla in Makkah under the expert guidance of Dr Amgad Fahmy, gaining a unique opportunity to engage directly with real-world architectural challenges and analyze the site’s conditions while understanding the natural and cultural context shaping their upcoming projects

The visit was more than just observational it provided a handson experience that allowed students to apply theoretical knowledge, sharpen problem-solving skills, and enhance their creativity and confidence in tackling future design challenges. This experience reflects Effat University’s commitment to practical learning, bridging the gap between theory and practice, and empowering students to become visionary architects capable of designing sustainable and innovative environments that meet societal needs. 14 September 2025

ENHANCING DIGITAL DESIGN SKILLS: SKETCHUP TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS

The Architecture Department is hosting a SketchUp Training Workshop led by Dr. Mohammed Fekry, designed to enhance students’ digital design capabilities. The workshop will introduce participants to SketchUp’s powerful 3D modeling tools, enabling them to create precise models and explore innovative design approaches. Through hands-on exercises, students will gain practical techniques to improve visualization and presentation skills, essential for both academic projects and professional practice This training offers a valuable opportunity to strengthen technical proficiency, boost design confidence, and integrate digital tools effectively into the architectural workflow 17 September 2025

SUSTAINABLE BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES UNIT LAUNCHED

Dr. Nermine Abdel Halim, supported by Effat University, ECoAD, and the Department of Architecture, established the Sustainable Building Technologies Unit to promote eco-friendly construction The unit provides hands-on training in compressed earth bricks, rammed earth, and date-palm leaf assemblies, encouraging the use of local and sustainable materials 17 September 2025

RAMMED EARTH WORKSHOP SHOWCASES SUSTAINABLE TECHNIQUES

The Rammed Earth Workshop, held during the 4th International Architecture and Design Conference at Effat University (29–30 September 2025), was led by Dr Nermine Abdel Halim and Dr Amgad Fahmy The workshop provided participants with hands-on experience in sustainable construction using earth as a building material within the Sustainable Building Technologies Unit. Emphasizing the revival and modernization of traditional techniques, the session demonstrated practical applications of eco-friendly methods for contemporary architectural projects.

CAPSTONE PROJECTS AND CITY BRANDING: LINKING ACADEMIA AND PRACTICE

On 28 September, we were delighted to host Dr. Badiah Masoud for an open and interactive discussion with our Capstone Studio students.

The session, organized by Dr. Mohamed Fekry, was held in an informal and relaxed atmosphere in the Students’ Lounge at Effat Library and Cultural Museum, transforming into a vibrant brainstorming space where creative ideas flourished. This friendly setting encouraged students to explore new possibilities, challenge conventional thinking, and translate their visions into innovative yet practical project concepts.

CITY TRANSFORMATION AND BRANDING MSAU GUEST LECTURE

Arch Yara Al-Johani, alongside Prof Mohamed Fekry, will lead a specialized session for Master’s students exploring the intersection of architectural identity and city transformation Conducted on-site, this educational and research-focused session aims to provide students with hands-on insights into how architecture shapes, and is shaped by, the evolving urban environment

The lecture will examine strategies for integrating cultural identity into contemporary urban design, offering students practical knowledge to inform both their academic projects and future professional practice This is a valuable opportunity for Master’s students to deepen their understanding of the dynamic relationship between architecture, identity, and city development 28 September 2025

AISHA ALSHEHRI HIGHLIGHTS SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION AT “TOUBNA SAUDI” EVENTS

Aisha Alshehri participated as a speaker in the second and third editions of the “Toubna Saudi” events, held under the patronage of the National Committee for Red Brick, in collaboration with the Federation of Saudi Chambers and the Asharqia Chamber

The events focused on the importance of red brick in enhancing energy efficiency and building quality, while also highlighting the role of digital technologies and robotics in advancing modern construction practices

These efforts align with the Sustainable Construction Initiative launched by the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing, aiming to promote sustainability standards in buildings and communities and support the development of the construction sector in Saudi Arabia

Refan Abed has been selected by Misk Global as one of the Youth Creators of 2025, in recognition of her creative contributions and impactful initiatives. The announcement comes as part of #MGF25, a global platform that brings together inspiring young leaders from around the world to share ideas, drive change, and shape the future This achievement reflects her commitment to creativity and youth empowerment, highlighting the growing role of young talents in making a positive impact at both local and international levels

ALUMNI IN FOCUS:WIAM KAFYAH’S IMPACT ON DESIGN AND CULTURAL ARCHITECTURE

Arch Wiam Kafyah continues to make impactful contributions to architectural discourse and practice Her work exemplifies a deep commitment to researching and communicating the intersection of architectural identity, cultural narratives, and environmental responsiveness. She has been instrumental in initiatives that document and celebrate the architectural character of cities, most notably her leadership, alongside dear co-founder Fatemah Almadani, in the “Architecture of Jeddah” initiative, which catalogued more than 100 buildings as living embodiments of cultural memory and urban identity Her professional and intellectual contributions extend to thought leadership, where she actively shares insights on narrative design frameworks, sustainable architectural practice, and context-based design thinking

ALANOD ALSHAIKH PARTICIPATES AS SPEAKER AT THE INTERNATIONAL RESTORATION CONFERENCE 2025

Alanod Alshaikh participated as a keynote speaker in the first panel discussion at the International Restoration Conference, organized by the Heritage Commission on October 1, 2025. She shared her insights on cultural heritage preservation, sustainable restoration, and the integration of modern technologies with historical values. During the session, she emphasized the importance of balancing urban development with heritage conservation and the role of young professionals in safeguarding cultural legacy. Her contributions reinforced a commitment to advancing heritage preservation initiatives locally and internationally

MASTERPLAN AT THE ROYAL COMMISSION FOR MAKKAH CITY

Joud Sammakieh has been appointed Manager – Masterplan at the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, marking a new chapter in her professional journey In this role, she contributes to the planning and development of the holy city, carrying a responsibility that reflects trust, dedication, and service to one of the most significant places in the world.

EXPLORING DATA-DRIVEN DESIGN AND BIM WORKFLOWS: INSIGHTS FROM JEDDAH CONSTRUCT FIRESIDE TALKS

As part of the Jeddah Construct Fireside Talks, held from 28–30 September 2025, industry experts shared their perspectives on the evolving role of data and technology in architecture and construction. Among the speakers, Mostafa A. Gabr, Senior Architect, BIM Manager, and PhD candidate, highlighted key questions regarding the value and utilization of project data. He discussed which project data is most valuable yet often overlooked, and how BIM can integrate field, design, and commercial data to enable smoother project delivery. He also reflected on the growing importance of data-driven workflows in shaping the future of design and construction in Saudi Arabia

Amgad Fahmy, Architectural Consultant, emphasized the role of consultants in guiding design decisions through critical data insights, especially in early project stages He addressed the challenge of balancing data-driven insights with the preservation of creativity and design intent, and shared strategies for helping project teams focus on the most impactful data without being overwhelmed.

The Fireside Talks provided a platform for exploring how emerging technologies and datainformed approaches can improve efficiency, collaboration, and decision-making in the built environment. The discussion highlighted the need for professionals to adapt to a landscape where design, construction, and operational data intersect, fostering more informed and innovative architectural and engineering practices in Saudi Arabia.

The 4th International Architecture and Design Conference at Effat University (29–30 September 2025) brought together architects, designers, and academics from around the world to explore innovative approaches in architecture, interior design, urban planning, and sustainable building practices. The conference provided a platform for sharing knowledge, showcasing cutting-edge projects, and discussing the future of the built environment in a rapidly evolving world.

EFFAT UNIVERSITY HOSTS 4TH INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE &

DESIGN

CONFERENCE ON VISIONARY DESIGN

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Effat University successfully hosted the 4th International Architecture & Design Conference (IADC 4) under the theme “Visionary Design: Shaping the Future in a Changing World ” The conference welcomed over 800 participants from more than 10 countries across four continents, highlighting Effat University’s growing role as a hub for global design innovation. The conference was opened by Dr. Asmaa Ibrahim, Dean of the College of Architecture & Design, who emphasized the university’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and cultural stewardship, aligned with Saudi Vision 2030. She highlighted the importance of cross-disciplinary collaboration in addressing global challenges and advancing creative solutions.

IADC 4 featured eight thematic tracks, four international keynote speakers, and two plenary panels showcasing industry insights and alumni achievements Hands-on workshops on compressed-earth construction, folding structures, and eco-friendly paper-making using palm fibers emphasized sustainability and cultural heritage Student innovation was showcased through an exhibition of 149 posters, while 356 high school students participated in national competitions, encouraging early engagement with architecture and design. The conference also strengthened collaboration through the signing of five MoUs supporting research, professional development, and experiential learning. Supported by 15 sponsors and partners, the conference reinforced Effat University’s commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and innovative design practices and marked the upgrade of its proceedings to Emerald Publishing, ensuring international academic visibility. Guided by leaders such as Dr. Asmaa Ibrahim, Effat University continues to shape the future of architecture and design through visionary thinking and global collaboration

CRAFT FOR A CAUSE: BREAST CANCER INITIATIVE

The Craft for a Cause (Breast Cancer) initiative, organized by the ARCH Student Council under the supervision of Ms Maya, was an awareness event that combined creativity with community engagement to support the fight against breast cancer Through meaningful crafting activities, students expressed solidarity with patients and survivors while promoting the importance of early detection and regular screenings The initiative fostered health awareness and encouraged students to actively support humanitarian and health-related causes

AIAS AND ARCH STUDENT COUNCIL CAMPUS MARATHON

The marathon organized by the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) in collaboration with the ARCH Student Council brought together students from across Effat University to promote health, teamwork, and community engagement. The event encouraged physical activity and friendly competition while fostering an energetic and supportive campus atmosphere Through this initiative, organizers highlighted the importance of wellness, collaboration, and extracurricular activities in enriching student life and supporting holistic development

The Department of Architecture is hosting a lecture by Dr. Amgad Fahmy on October 1, 2025, focusing on the role of natural light in architectural design. The session explores key daylighting principles and strategies that enhance interior comfort, improve energy efficiency, and support sustainable design Students will gain practical insights into building orientation, window placement, and light distribution techniques, enabling them to integrate effective and innovative daylighting solutions into their architectural projects.

Effat University hosted the workshop “Man & Place: Interrelation in Dialogue – Reflections on Identity, Culture & Change” on 24 November 2025, led by Dr Mohammed Fekry Guest speakers Dr Adel Alzahrani, Prof Reem Alsabban, Dr Noura Ghabra, and Dr Ahmed Abdelrazik shared insights on architecture, urban planning, and cultural identity, highlighting the role of space in shaping community and belonging

MEGA PROJECT MANAGEMENT GUEST LECTURE

On 5 November 2025, the Architecture Department hosted Dr. Bassam Ghulman for senior students. His lecture, “Complexity, Collaboration, and Success: The Haramain Railway as a Case Study,” examined the challenges of large-scale architectural and engineering projects, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and effective project management. Throughout the session, organized by Prof. Mohamed Fekry, the students gained practical insights into real-world workflows and leadership in the field.

EFFAT UNIVERSITY INTRODUCES CEB PRESS FOR SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION

Effat University has introduced a Compressed Earth Brick (CEB) Press Machine to support sustainable construction research and hands-on learning. Led by Dr. Nermine Abdel Halim, the initiative enables students to gain practical experience with eco-friendly building materials, reinforcing the university’s commitment to sustainability in architectural education. On 13 November 2025, a session by Arch Wed Alyamani explored how architecture preserves memory and evokes nostalgia in Jeddah Students examined historic buildings and cultural narratives to understand how design could connect communities to their heritage. The lecture emphasized creating spaces that honor the city’s past while inspiring emotional resonance and cultural identity.

AI in Architectural Research

On 16 November 2025, Prof. Hossam Elsamaty and Prof. Mohamed Fekry led an online session on using AI tools in architectural research Students learned to search, analyze, and synthesize information to enhance architectural identity, integrating AI into their design process for innovative and creative outcomes

ARCHITECTURE STUDENTSVISIT EL KHAYYAT RED BRICKS FACTORY

On 13 November 2025, Effat University Architecture students visited El Khayyat Red Bricks Factory in Jeddah to learn about sustainable brick production. Guided by the factory team, they observed the full process from clay preparation to kiln firing and learned how optimized manufacturing reduces energy use and carbon emissions The visit connected classroom theory with real-world practice, emphasizing sustainable material choices and energy-efficient design for future architectural projects

Mastering Revit Mechanical Modeling

On 17 November 2025, the Architecture Department hosted Dr. Amgad Fahmy for a lecture on Revit Mechanical Modeling. The session focused on using Revit to design and coordinate mechanical systems, visualize 3D models, detect clashes early, and optimize workflows, providing participants with practical skills to integrate mechanical systems into architectural projects efficiently

The session demonstrated how Revit enables efficient design and coordination of mechanical systems, 3D visualization, clash detection, and workflow optimization, giving participants practical skills for integrating mechanical systems into architectural projects

Designing a Shared Future: Highlights from the 19th RED Summit Luxury Edition

The 19th Real Estate Development Summit – Saudi Arabia | Luxury Edition, held on December 9, 2025, brought together over 1,000 pre-invited leaders from development, investment, architecture, engineering, and hospitality Under the theme “Designing Tomorrow, Together,” the summit provided a comprehensive platform for collaboration, strategic dialogue, and forward-thinking discussions shaping the Kingdom’s built environment

This year’s edition featured two dedicated tracks: Development and Investment, offering in-depth discussions, strategic insights, and actionable ideas to guide the future of Saudi Arabia’s real estate sector These initiatives reflect the Kingdom’s ambition to position itself as a global hub for sustainable urban development, smart cities, and innovative real estate solutions.

As part of the GBB Future Minds Program, 30 talented architecture and design students from Effat University engaged directly with global industry leaders. They participated in workshops, interactive sessions, and panel discussions, gaining invaluable experience and insight into emerging trends and best practices in architecture and urban planning. This initiative demonstrates the summit’s and the Saudi Business Council’s commitment to youth empowerment, knowledge exchange, and nurturing the next generation of design and planning professionals. Sustainability was a key focus of the summit, highlighted by collaboration with VCM to achieve Net Zero Event standards. This effort set a new benchmark for environmentally responsible practices in large-scale industry events and reinforced the Kingdom’s commitment to green and sustainable development. Participants benefited from the expertise of internationally renowned speakers, including:

Ron Bakker (PLP Architecture): on intentional, human-focused architecture

Aala Qahtani (ALIEN Architects): on the evolution of Saudi Arabia’s architectural identity and future urban trends

The summit also featured the RICA Industry Choice Awards, recognizing outstanding projects and companies in the sector, alongside critical discussions on ethical development, smart cities, and sustainable urban planning These sessions emphasized the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors, as well as academic institutions, in driving innovation and shaping the future of the Kingdom’s built environment. The Luxury Edition of the summit highlighted the spirit of innovation, knowledge exchange, and collaboration, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s position as a leader in sustainable urban development. The Saudi Business Council continues to provide platforms where emerging talent can learn, connect, and grow alongside industry leaders, contributing to the design of the Kingdom’s cities of tomorrow. EDUCATIONAL SITE VISIT TO ITHRA

The site visit to Ithraa in Al Khobar, carefully arranged by the distinguished faculty of the Design and Architecture Department, provided students with a valuable and deeply enriching learning experience. This initiative aligned with the department’s commitment to integrating academic knowledge with real-world professional exposure, ensuring that students engage with contemporary practices that shape the design and development landscape in the Kingdom.

Throughout the visit, students toured Ithraa’s state-of-the-art facilities, gaining direct access to a wide range of specialized spaces and active project environments They were introduced to the organization’s ongoing work across various disciplines, allowing them to observe the progression of design projects from conceptual stages all the way to implementation This firsthand exposure enabled students to better understand the methodologies, technical processes, and decision-making frameworks that guide professional practice in leading design institutions

In addition, students had the opportunity to interact with professionals and project leads, discussing design strategies, material selections, sustainability considerations, and innovative technological tools utilized in both architecture and interior design workflows. These conversations offered them clarity on industry expectations and provided meaningful insight into the collaborative nature of multidisciplinary project teams. The immersive experience not only strengthened students’ technical awareness but also deepened their appreciation for the complexities and challenges that accompany real-world project development. By witnessing the integration of creativity, engineering, management, and technology within professional settings, students developed a more comprehensive understanding of how academic concepts translate into tangible outcomes. Ultimately, the visit served as an essential bridge between theory and practice, reinforcing the department’s commitment to preparing future designers and architects who are informed, skilled, and capable of contributing effectively to the evolving design sector in Saudi Arabia. Such field experiences play a crucial role in shaping student perspectives, motivating them to pursue excellence, and equipping them with the confidence to navigate the professional world with competence a d ambition.

On 29 December 2025, Effat University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with El Khayyat Red Bricks Factories to support the Sustainable Building Technology Unit and strengthen collaboration in sustainable construction and earth-based building materials. Asmaa Hussain Alganawi won the Best Research Poster Award in GIS, Mobility, and Infrastructure Systems at the 2025–2026 Graduate Studies Forum, Faculty of Architecture and Planning, King Abdulaziz University. Her research used GIS to analyze urban mobility and assess infrastructure, promoting human-centered urban planning and active mobility. DESIGNING THE END-OF-YEAR STAGE FOR AL AHLY CLUB CHILDREN’S PLAY

Cairo, Egypt – 5 January 2026

Dr. Dina Mostafa led a creative project involving the design and realization of the end-of-year theatrical stage for a children’s play at Al Ahly Club in Egypt. The initiative aimed to celebrate the talents and creativity of young performers, fostering teamwork and artistic expression in a lively, engaging setting. The project encompassed all aspects of stage design and production, from conceptual planning and scenography to the physical realization of the set, ensuring that the environment effectively supported the storytelling and performance By integrating elements of visual design, spatial planning, and theatrical techniques, the stage provided an immersive experience that highlighted both the performers’ creativity and the educational objectives of the event. This production served as a cultural and educational platform, allowing children to explore performance arts, develop collaborative skills, and express themselves artistically. It also demonstrated the role of design in enhancing the audience’s experience, showing how thoughtful scenography and stage planning can transform live performances into memorable events.

PROJECT: FROM WASTE TO WONDER

Effat University played a key role in the “Waste-toWonder” Cross-Cultural Innovation Initiative, led by Dr Sajid Khalifa Students in his Contemporary Issues in Design course were challenged to create sustainable packaging using date palm fronds, an abundant agricultural byproduct in the region

The project was a true example of interdisciplinary and international collaboration Pakistani chemistry students provided detailed research on the chemical properties, durability, biodegradability, food safety, and costeffectiveness of date palm fronds. Using this scientific foundation, Effat design students moved through ideation, 3D modeling, and prototyping, transforming research into practical and visually appealing packaging solutions.

Dr. Khalifa described the outcomes as “very creative, realistic, and practical packaging solutions”, successfully blending scientific rigor with aesthetic innovation The students’ designs featured multi-compartment trays and cultural motifs, reflecting local heritage while emphasizing functionality and sustainability

Beyond design, the project fostered teamwork, problem-solving, and cross-cultural communication. Students learned how combining perspectives from different disciplines and countries can lead to innovative, real-world solutions, highlighting Effat University’s commitment to creativity, sustainability, and global collaboration.

STUDENTS TOOK PART IN HANDS-ON FILM AND ANIMATION PROJECTS, WORKSHOPS, AND INDUSTRY-LED ACTIVITIES THAT STRENGTHENED THEIR CREATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS. EFFAT SCHOOL OF CINEMATIC ARTS SHINES AT THE 48-HOUR FILM CHALLENGE

On September 21, 2025, students from the Effat School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) won first place at the 5th 48-Hour Film Challenge. Their film Mubham, created by the TwinRail team and directed by Mohannad Al-Zahrani, stood out among 14 competing teams nationwide, showcasing exceptional creativity, teamwork, and filmmaking talent

High school students visited the department for an interactive learning experience focused on photography and animation. The visit included hands-on workshops led by faculty members, introducing students to basic photography techniques and digital animation concepts Through practical activities and creative exploration, students gained valuable insight into these fields and were inspired to explore future opportunities in photography and animation.

The SCA Chair hosted Dr. Musab Alamri for a workshop on Film Criticism, highlighting the role of critical analysis in understanding cinema’s artistic, social, and cultural dimensions The session formed part of a nationwide initiative launched in 2023 to strengthen film criticism across Saudi Arabia, engaging aspiring critics and supporting the Kingdom’s growing cinematic landscape.

DR. MOHAMED GHAZALA RE-ELECTED AS ASIFAVICE PRESIDENT, STRENGTHENING ANIMATION EDUCATION IN THE ARAB AND AFRICAN REGIONS

Dr Mohamed Ghazala, Chair of the School of Cinematic Arts at Effat University, has been re-elected for a third term as Vice President of ASIFA’s International Executive Board This re-election highlights his leadership in promoting animation education, industry growth, and international collaboration, especially across the Arab and African regions.

A pioneer in animation, Dr. Ghazala founded the first ASIFA chapter in Africa and the Arab world, directed award-winning films like Honyan’s Shoe (2009), served on international festival juries, and published research on animation. He has also lectured at universities worldwide, fostering knowledge exchange and creative development.

Through his ASIFA role, Dr. Ghazala continues to support young animators, organize workshops and training programs, and connect students to global festivals and competitions His reelection reinforces Effat University’s role in the international animation community and recognizes his long-standing contributions to nurturing talent and advancing the global animation industry

HOLLYWOOD PRODUCER TOM JACOBSON LEADS FILMMAKING WORKSHOP FOR EFFAT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

On October 20–21, 2025, Effat University hosted a special two-day filmmaking workshop led by Hollywood veteran Tom Jacobson, engaging members of the School of Cinematic Arts (SCA) Students Council in an immersive exploration of film production. The sessions offered students a rare opportunity to learn directly from an industry professional with extensive experience in major studio filmmaking.

Tom Jacobson is a respected film producer and former studio executive whose career spans decades in the motion picture industry. He has served in senior production roles at major Hollywood studios and played a key part in the development and success of numerous blockbuster films, including Home Alone, Home Alone 2, and Independence Day

During the workshop, Jacobson guided students through the entire filmmaking process, from initial concept and story development to planning, production, and bringing a project to the screen. Emphasis was placed on the foundational pillars of cinema storytelling, effective planning, and collaborative teamwork all essential components of successful film and media production. The interactive sessions allowed students to ask questions, gain firsthand insights, and learn practical tips from Jacobson’s extensive experience. Participants described the workshop as a transformative experience that inspired their creative ambitions and provided valuable perspectives rarely accessible in academic settings.
