CAREER DEVELOPMENT TEAM

Career and College Success

DPS Mission

Educational equity is our collective responsibility. We prepare students for career, college and life. We create conditions and partnerships where students, families and team members belong and thrive.

CCS Vision

Every student in DPS will receive tangible support, opportunities and resources throughout their time in DPS for individual exploration and discovery, career exploration, and academic and career planning.

From Superintendent - District Commitment to Career Development Opportunities

Dear DPS Community Members,

It is my pleasure to share with you the 2024-25 Career Development Team Annual Report . DPS has great pride in having the largest known k-12 work-based learning programming across the United States. Last year alone, our diverse elementary, middle, and high students participated in nearly 22,500 experiences, an increase of over 7,000 from the previous year.

We believe that we must foster the career identity of our scholars and offer meaningful work-based learning opportunities ABOUT, THROUGH, and AT WORK throughout their time in DPS. These experiences allow youth to pursue their passions and have shown to positively impact their GPA, attendance, graduation rates, and college matriculation. Furthermore, it helps students see the relevance of what they’re learning in the classroom, build their professional network and develop a post-secondary plan that aligns with their future goals.

The Career Development Team is committed to providing equitable programming and prioritizing underserved populations to eliminate persistent educational and economic gaps. We thank you for your continued support and collaboration as we expand our efforts and ensure Every Learner Thrives.

Embark Elementary Teachers

Students are drawn to technology, but may not know how it works or the importance of keeping it safe. When MyTech came and allowed our students to fix Chromebooks that were broken, it showed students the effects of harming technology. It also inspired many of my students to build interest in technology throughout their lives and thinking about their careers when they are older.

Student Stories

Embark Elementary Student Story

In early December, the DPS MyTech team came to Southmoor Elementary School for a workshop with 2nd graders. The Denver Public Schools MyTech Hardware Repair Team equips students with technology, provides access to vital resources, and supports the digital skills development that students need to succeed in school and beyond. MyTech works on the hardware that students in DPS use and sometimes abuse- they fix a lot of student chromebooks! MyTech has worked with the Career Development Team’s programming for elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as post-secondary apprentices. They are committed to building a pathway in tech for all our learners.

When MyTech visited Southmoor, the workshop they brought to the students was incredibly engaging! Each student was given a broken chromebook. Students were shown how to open up the computer to look at the parts inside, and then diagnose the problem and fix it! Students experienced the excitement that comes with successfully solving a difficult problem and learned how they could get into the industry of computer repair themselves. Java, one of the students in the workshop, said, "This is so fun! I love electricity!”

The experience was meaningful for the MyTech team as well. Bryan Roos, the MyTech Internship and Apprenticeship Coordinator, said, “We participate in programming with elementary scholars because we believe that early exposure to technology is a powerful first step in a lifelong journey of learning, creativity, and confidence. For the MyTech team, it’s a reminder of the importance of starting early, planting seeds of curiosity and empowerment that can grow into future passions, careers, and innovations.”

Spark Middle School - Student Story

Through the Spark Middle School Career Exploration Program, students have the unique opportunity to explore a variety of careers by visiting businesses and organizations across the Metro Denver area. This year, Juan Alfaki, a 6th grade student from Merrill Middle School, participated in multiple Spark events— and discovered a passion for serving his community.

“I’m a person who wants to work in community service to help people,” Juan shared during a visit to the Denver 911 Call Center, where he explored careers in the public safety sector. During the event, Juan observed 911 call takers in action and learned how emergency calls are processed. He even got handson experience in the Computer-Aided Dispatch Lab, where he role-played taking a 911 call. Reflecting on what he saw, he said, “In the past I wanted to be a police officer, and then I changed my mind. But now I want to be one again—because everybody is so friendly and they help the community, which is something I want to do.”

Juan’s passion for helping others was further fueled by visits to other career sites. At MSU Denver’s Hospitality program, he worked alongside the head chef and learned how to make fresh pasta dough. He also explored animal health careers during a trip to CSU Spur, where he observed veterinarians performing live surgery on a dog. “It’s so fun and exciting,” he said. “I thought all jobs were boring, but that wasn’t true—everyone was friendly and helpful.”

When asked what he would tell other students considering Spark, Juan had this advice:

“It’s really helpful to learn about different jobs. It’s hard to decide on a career at a young age, so getting to see real jobs in action helps so much— and it’s fun too!”

Spark continues to provide powerful, hands-on experiences that help students like Juan explore their interests, ignite new passions, and imagine what's possible for their futures.

Xplore Student Story

During the 2024-25 school year, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College sophomore, Mirwais Massoud, was an active participant in Career and College Success programming. He attended four Xplore events and one workforce readiness conference. His experience in Xplore encouraged him to participate in a Launch Internship in the Fall and the Electric Vehicle Academy in the Summer.

Mirwais credits attending the Xplore events to helping him gain a better vision of his college and career goals. He feels he has a better awareness of jobs that are out there, how to prepare for interviews, and a new knowledge about climate change. Mirwais’ favorite trips were the St. Anthony North Hospital Tour and Police Museum. He says that the Hospital Tour and one-on-one conversation with a physician helped solidify his dream and goal of becoming a doctor.

Mirwais said that he would recommend Xplore events to younger students or any student wanting to explore careers. He would describe the events as a “fun experience” and one he will “never forget.”

Coach Program- Student Story

Students in our Creative Cohort at Lincoln High School thrived during the 2024-2025 school year, building meaningful connections with mentors that supported both personal growth and future readiness. This year’s focus on career exploration within the creative industries gave students a chance to see how their passions could connect to real-world opportunities. With the support of VF Corporation and their mentors, students explored pathways in graphic design, digital media, fashion, music, and more.

Highlights included a company visit to VF Corporation, hands-on projects, and the unique opportunity for students to give first-hand product reviews and brainstorm future products with professionals. These experiences not only broadened career awareness but also built confidence, sparked inspiration, and deepened mentor-mentee bonds through shared discovery.

As a first-year company champion, VF Corporation was instrumental in advancing our program objectives. Their engagement was so impactful that they are returning next year and expanding their commitment by sponsoring a second school.

DYEP Student Story

“My experience working at Collaborative Healing Initiatives within Communities (CHIC) was the best first job I could’ve asked for” says Kassidy Holloway, summer 2025 DYEP participant. “Everyone there is like a family to me. I learned how to interact with young children and had a great time hanging out with them . I learned a lot about myself and had fun in a leadership role. I can’t wait to work with CHIC next year!!!”

According to her supervisor, Tia Deville, Kassidy spent the summer working with their littles group (kindergarten through second grade). “Kassidy had a rough job trying to keep our littles on task, but she fought through all challenges and adversity she faced, and she did it with a smile, kind words, and a caring heart. Kassidy's growth during her time at CHIC was impressive. She came anxious, quiet and hesitant to take the lead. By the end of her time with us, she was able to lead with grace, be vulnerable and try new things, and she became more confident and comfortable using her voice.”

Kassidy is already looking forward to participating in DYEP again next year and says that she learned valuable lessons that she will be able to use in high school and beyond!

Launch Student Testimonial

My name is Christian Tesfaye, and I am currently a Junior at Vista Academy with a 3.21 GPA. In addition to my high school studies, I’m also taking college-level courses at the Community College of Aurora, a reflection of my drive to challenge myself and prepare for future success. One of the most meaningful experiences in my journey so far has been my participation in the Denver Public Schools (DPS) Ready for 2029 internship.

This summer internship focused on helping middle school students—especially incoming freshmen— transition smoothly into high school. As a student support intern, I worked closely with younger students, helping them build confidence, improve organization skills, and feel connected to their new school environment. The program taught me how to lead with empathy, communicate clearly with students and staff, and adapt to different needs and learning styles.

Beyond personal growth, the internship made a powerful impact on the students we served. It created a bridge between middle school and high school, easing anxiety, boosting academic readiness, and encouraging positive social interaction. The students came away feeling more prepared, supported, and motivated for what’s ahead. For me, the experience strengthened my leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork skills— skills I will carry into any future academic or career path. My experience in the DPS Ready for 2029 internship was more than just an internship; it was a meaningful opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of others while growing into a stronger, more capable version of myself.

Apprenticeship Student Testimonial

Victoria Pena, Apprentice at CEC Early Learning Center

My first year in the Ed Connect apprenticeship program was an amazing learning experience. I worked as a teaching assistant at CEC Early Learning Academy, supporting students ages 3-5 in their learning. I was able to observe and learn from experienced teachers and I gained valuable skills that will help me in future opportunities . My favorite part was forming meaningful relationships with my students that continue to grow even after they have entered kindergarten

As I enter my second year in the apprenticeship program, I am excited to apply everything I learned last year in a new environment . I am looking forward to working with older students, gaining experience in a dual-language setting and continuing to be a role model for students who look like me . I feel prepared and eager to see how I grow as an educator this year and to see the impact I can make.

Innovation & Expansion

Our elementary programming has exploded this school year!

Thanks to a generous grant from a local, anonymous funder, we were able to hire two full-time elementary coordinators, significantly expanding our capacity to deliver career exploration programs to K-5 students. We more than doubled our student touchpoints compared to the previous school year—reaching 11,617 total event enrollments this year, up from 5,463! In the 2023-24 school year, we organized 95 student events; this year, that number jumped to 215.

Middle School Summer Job Shadows

The Spark Middle School Program expanded its summer job shadow opportunities, nearly doubling its reach from the previous year. In summer of 2025, almost 60 students from 18 middle schools were welcomed by 13 partner sites. Students spent a half day alongside professionals— shadowing their daily work, trying out real job tasks, and exploring diverse career pathways. The experience was highly rated, with 85% of participating students describing it as above average or excellent.

In addition to job shadows, the 8th grade Spark Career Exploration class underwent several improvements over the summer. In partnership with a consulting company, the curriculum was revised to be more culturally sustaining and easier for teachers to implement. The Spark team also collaborated with the Career and Technical Education (CTE) team to secure state-level approval of the course’s scope and sequence under the ACE middle school pathway. As a result, the curriculum is now endorsed by the state and serves as a model for other school districts across Colorado.

Strengthening Futures through the Mentoring Collaborative

Through the Mentoring Collaborative, we partnered with four mentoring organizations to bring career exploration directly to students in their existing programs. Our goal was to expand career readiness opportunities by reaching students through trusted mentors, helping them connect their interests with future pathways .

We worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Denver Kids, Sims-Fayola Foundation, and the YESS Institute to deliver sessions ranging from one-time workshops to multi-part series. Topics included workplace readiness, professional behavior, career exploration, personal branding, and financial literacy.

These collaborations expanded career learning for students already engaged in mentoring relationships and deepened their awareness of post-secondary options. Feedback from students, mentors, and staff was overwhelmingly positive, reinforcing the value of embedding career readiness into mentoring programs.

Electric Vehicle Academy

In 2023, DPS committed to implementing a Climate Action Plan (CAP), a comprehensive proposal that outlines the district’s commitment to tackling climate change and promoting environmental justice. The CAP goals include increasing student exposure to green careers through career development activities.

To this end, the DPS Career Development Team initiated the first Electric Vehicle (EV) Academy in summer 2025. The Academy connected DPS efforts to electrify our transportation fleet with exposure to the current and future forms of electrified transportation, the careers associated with them and how the transportation systems and technology work through a curriculum delivered by Women Who Charge . DPS also partnered with Ohm on the Range, a non-profit that taught students about electric vehicles by helping them build an electric scooter and designing an EV of the future. We hope to continue offering the EV Academy through continued funding from the City of Denver’s Department of Climate Action Sustainability and Resiliency.

Free College Credit for Launch Internship Students

The DPS Career Development Team has partnered with the Community College of Denver (CCD) to offer student free Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) credit for a college Business Communications course. Launch students who opt into PLA credit are given the opportunity to demonstrate their competencies through reflective writing assignments that are integrated into the Communications course. Last summer, seven students received PLA credit from CCD after completing their internship. We hope to see a significant increase in the number of students opting into PLA next school year.

Career and College Success Student Profile Reports

In partnership with the Counseling and Graduation Implementation teams, we implemented the Career and College Success Student Profile Reports in 20 middle and high schools. The purpose of the Profile Report is to:

1. Provide students with an asset-based, tangible resource that is personalized to highlight their interests and their academic journey and connect to post-secondary and career options.

2. Create a tool that can assist the adults in a student’s life (parents/guardians, teacher, advisors, coaches…) by providing a resource that informs discussion about next steps.

We’re excited to report that we also collaborated with the District’s Exceptional Student Services (ESS) team to develop an additional page for students with disabilities; this will provide students and families with easy access to community agency contact information and enhance smooth transitions and ongoing services. Furthermore, we strategically embedded the Reports into our Coach Mentoring program so that mentees/mentors can unpack the personalized profiles and support next steps. Coming next year, the Profiles will be generated for all middle and high school students and available in all the consent decree languages on our student, staff, and parent portals!

Multi-Year & Significant Contributors

Without the $1,913,366 in contributions from our partners, the quality and breadth of programming offered to students by the Career Development Team would not be possible. Several companies supported various WBL programs through their generous contributions or grants.

PRIVATE FUNDER

In addition, 22 industry partners contributed $70,000 to offset the cost of student fellowship awards, specifically.

Please also refer to the Appendix for a complete list of participating partners and donors.
