Whippets are a different shape to Greyhounds and Italian Greyhounds. A Whippet should have a long, lean head and a body with a series of graceful curves. Whippets are suitable for everyone: singles, couples, families of any size and owners of any age. They can happily live in houses with yards, townhouses and even apartments.

Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
As we begin the new year, I would like to acknowledge and extend our sincere thoughts to all DOGS NSW members, their families and the broader community who have been impacted by the recent extreme weather events. These conditions have affected many across the state, including our dogs, clubs and volunteers.
We recognise the challenges this creates, particularly for those managing properties, events and the welfare of their animals, and we thank everyone for their resilience, patience and mutual support during this time.
I am pleased to report that Workshop 3 of our Strategic Planning process has now been successfully completed. This workshop saw strong engagement and thoughtful contributions from both Committee and Board members, reflecting a shared commitment to shaping a clear and sustainable future for DOGS NSW. With just one workshop remaining, we are now well positioned to finalise and deliver our Strategic Plan, which will provide direction and focus for the organisation in the years ahead.
We are also looking forward to holding a Town Hall meeting to share progress, communicate key priorities, and engage directly with our members. These forums are a vital part of open governance, and we encourage members to participate, ask questions and contribute to the ongoing conversation about the future of DOGS NSW.
As part of our broader strategic thinking, moving forward the show and trial calendar will be considered holistically, encompassing all DOGS NSW events across both sporting and conformation disciplines. This approach is intended to better support business viability, reduce unnecessary clashes, and improve equity and participation across all activities. By taking a whole-of-organisation view, we aim to ensure that all disciplines are supported fairly and sustainably.
I am also very excited about the upcoming Sydney Royal 2026, which remains one of the most significant events on our calendar and a showcase of excellence for our sport. Thank you to the incredible teams who work tirelessly to make this event possible with amazing success. I encourage all members to get involved and support this wonderful event, whether as competitors, officials, volunteers or spectators. Your participation plays a vital role in its continued success.
The Board is very much looking forward to progressing our agreed strategies and directions, with a number of initiatives to be rolled out over the coming months. These initiatives will focus on strengthening governance, improving operational efficiency, supporting clubs and members, and ensuring DOGS NSW is well positioned for the future.
In that spirit, I would also ask members to keep an eye out for opportunities to put their hand up and contribute to what we are calling our organisational “knowledge tree”. We are keen to harness the skills, experience and expertise of our diverse membership to support future strategy, projects, and initiatives. Your knowledge is one of our greatest assets, and we want to ensure it is recognised and utilised.
Finally, thank you for your continued support and the important contributions you make to DOGS NSW. I look forward to seeing you at our dog performance sports, shows and events throughout the year, and to working together as we continue to strengthen and grow our organisation.

Dear Members,
MESSAGE
From 16 October 2025, small dogs will officially be allowed in the cabin on selected domestic flights with Virgin Australia. As it’s the first time in Australian aviation history this has been possible, it’s a huge milestone for Aussie pet parents who want to take their dogs with them on holiday. The routes and seat allocations are, at this stage, restricted to only Virgin Australia flights on route from Melbourne to the Sunshine and Gold Coasts, however, it is expected that this will eventually open doors to not only other routes, but also with other airline carriers. Check out the informative article about what you need to know on page 32, ‘Flying with Dogs In-Cabin (Australia),‘ written by Michelle Hutch from Pawtripper, with an extract from Virgin Australia's website.
Dog trainer and behaviourist, Sarah Rutten, recently released her new book ‘The Canine Perspective: Using Force-Free Methods to Unleash Your Dog’s Paw-tential’ and our own Kate Davidson interviewed her in an article featured on page 25. Look below and on socials for more information about Sarah Rutten coming to DOGS NSW in March this year for a special talk.
DOGS NSW Public Relations Events Committee hosted another successful Christmas Show and Party on Saturday evening, 20 December with a great attendance and wonderful entries. A fun time was had by all and coverage of this festive event commences on page 10, with colourful imagery supplied by Daniel Harmis Photography.
The 2026 Advance™ Sydney Royal Dog Show commences April 2 and once again we have an article supplied to us by the RAS to get you ready and offer reminders about this much anticipated event. A must read for all exhibitors, the article commences on page 14, with words from John Bryson.
The Spotlight breed this month is the elegant and fun loving Whippet. A wonderful, adaptable breed, suitable for a host of different kind of owners, the Whippet is easily trained and loves to be involved in energetic pursuits and sports.
December's 'World of Dogs' book competition winners were Beverley Murray, Janelle Woodward and Lee Fratturo. Congratulations!

Join respected dog behaviourist and force-free training advocate Sarah Rutten for a thought-provoking session that digs into the science behind how dogs actually learn and why old-school methods might be doing more harm than good.
With over two decades of experience helping dogs and their people, Sarah is known for her straight-talking, no-BS approach.
She’ll challenge common myths, explain why dominance theory has been debunked, and explore how reactivity, aggression and anxiety are more often signs of stress, not stubbornness.
Topics she’ll cover include:
•
•
Dominance Theory Debunked – Where it came from, and why it’s time to let it go
Why Dogs Really Behave “Badly” – Understanding the role of the nervous system
What Force-Free Training Actually Is – (Hint: It’s not just about treats)
•
• •
Body Language & Stress Signals – Learn to read what your dog is really saying
The Stats Behind Punishment – What the research says about long-term effects
Whether you’re skeptical, curious, or ready to evolve your approach, this session will offer insights backed by science, and delivered with Sarah’s trademark Aussie humour and clarity.
Unpack the myths. Understand the science. Build better relationships with your dogs.
Rising rates of rare diseases in dogs and cats pose new challenges for vets
WA’s leading veterinary hospital at Murdoch University is reminding pet owners that if they notice changes with their pets to go and see a veterinarian. Diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and thyroid conditions in dogs and cats are on the rise, and the signs can be really subtle.
Like in humans, environmental and lifestyle factors are contributors to increasing rates of disease and early detection is key to better outcomes.
Dr Robert Shiel, Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine at Murdoch University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, said treating these complex diseases requires a multi-disciplinary approach to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatments.
“Many endocrine diseases are increasing in frequency. This trend raises questions about environmental factors and parallels in human medicine,” Professor Shiel said.
“Endocrine diseases such as diabetes, hypo and hyperthyroidism and Cushing’s disease can present in various ways, including changes in appetite and coat condition.
“One example of an increasing trend is Hyperaldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome) in older cats. This is a condition that can lead to high blood pressure, muscle weakness, lethargy and eye problems. It was rare 40 years ago but is becoming more common.”
Dr Albert Thomas, a lecturer in Veterinary Oncology, said cancer rates in companion animals also remain persistently high: one in four dogs and one in five cats will develop cancer during their lifetime.
“Unfortunately, the statistics are high, and those rates are going to continue to grow as better diagnostics and treatment options become available,” he said. “We’re now exploring targeted therapies, particularly adapting human drugs for common animal diseases.”
The demand for new and improved approaches to animal care is only increasing as pet ownership grows.
The 2025 Pets in Australia study by Animal Medicines Australia estimates pet ownership rates are 12% higher over pre-pandemic levels. There are 31.6 million pets living in 7.7 million households – representing 73% of all Australian households - almost 50% of which are dogs, and 34% cats. The report found that despite cost-of-living pressures, Australians spend $21 billion annually on their pets.
Murdoch’s School of Veterinary Medicine is responding to this increasing demand for care with constant advances in veterinary clinical research.Dean of Veterinary Medicine Dr Henry Annandale said these included:
• A significant focus on cancer treatments for dogs and cats to improve quality and length of life.
• Advances in treatment of diseases like diabetes, blood disorders, cardiovascular disease, thyroid and adrenal disorders, and injury management.
• The increasing role of veterinary research in disease economics and prevention, for example food safety and public health policy, disease response, and mitigation of the impact of climate change and natural disasters on animal health and productivity.
“The integration of technologies like telemedicine and digital imaging, and the aligning of veterinary training with realworld practice needs, have ensured the veterinary profession today is vastly different from that of decades gone by,” Dr Annandale said.

24 February is the National War Animal Day for War Animals in Australia, ‘Purple Poppy Day’. We wear a purple poppy and take the time to think about not only the soldiers who gave their lives in war, but also to spare a thought for the four-legged and winged hero's that have fought and died alongside our troops.
We also recognise the deeds and sacrifices of those currently serving, and we honour the working horses and dogs that serve on our own shores, not just in military but also in the police and border force services.
War Animal Day also provides the opportunity for us to consider the impact that conflict has had on animals around the world. It is estimated that more than 8 million animals died in WW1 alone: 400,000 horses left our Australian shore - only one was allowed to return home. 20,000 dogs, 200,000 pigeons, camels, mules, donkeys and even insects all played their part in battle.
During the Vietnam War, the use of Agent Orange destroyed the habitats for Elephants, Asian Tigers, Civets, Leopards, and other species causing their extinction in this area. At least 40,000 animals were killed by landmines for the 20 years that followed.
The current war in Ukraine has affected millions of animals. From wildlife to beloved pets, many animals have died and even more remain starving, traumatised, or in dire need of care. Devastatingly, thousands of animals have had to be left behind as people are forced to flee their homes.
Animals have been put to many uses in war. Serving as transport, beasts of burden, messengers, protectors, mascots and pets. They have played an important part in all wars in which Australians have been involved.
Military Working Dogs are trained for specific jobs, including tracking, explosive detection, patrol, search and rescue and attack. In the thrones of combat, war dogs proved their intelligence, courage, and steadfast loyalty time and time again. Most importantly, they offered comfort and companionship on war's brutal battlefields.
animals that gave their lives
Memorial Organisation.
WWII hero Smoky, became the first war dog to be honoured with Distinguished Service Medal in the USA. The medal is the highest award American animals can receive. Found in an abandoned foxhole in New Guinea, the Yorkshire Terrier (pictured right) spent two years backpacking through the jungle with troops. She slept in their tents and shared their rations. Smoky participated in 12 air-sea rescue and photo reconnaissance missions. She survived 150 air raids on New Guinea and made it through a typhoon on Okinawa. She was credited for saving lives of others by warning the soldiers of incoming fire.
Donkeys were in constant demand to carry supplies to the frontline.
The homing ability and navigational skills of carrier pigeons saw them used during the First and Second World Wars. Some were even awarded medals for gallantry.
On our own shores, many agencies still use animals like to perform duties in our police and border force, such as patrols, special operations, parades and escorts. Our Police Dogs are amongst the best trained in the world, crucially
important in the detection of drug, firearms/ explosives and human remains.
These animals displayed great valour, courage and bravery. They were drafted into service, stood side by side with their humans.
By all of us acknowledging them for the incredible bond they shared, and for the sacrifices they made alongside those they served with, we can now restore some of the respect they are due.
It is important to bring your attention to the fact that there is currently no Department of Veterans Affairs waiting to support our war dogs when they retire. Because of their age, the families who take on these dogs are unable to take out pet insurance to help with the costs of his veterinary care.
AWAMO has a program in place to financially help and support these veteran Australian Military Working Dogs, like 'Manic'. Funds raised by the charity are used to purchase medication, cover veterinary treatments, supply comfort aids and assist with end-of-life expenses. There remains around 20 Military Working Dogs (MWD) that have deployed multiple times to Afghanistan that are either still in service or recently retired. 11 have given the ultimate sacrifice, killed in Afghanistan protecting our troops.
Veteran of the Vietnam War and Paul Zaat, during his time in service found himself passionately writing poetry, mostly to document the experiences of the brave men of the 8th Infantry Battalion. He wrote this poem, in honour of the retired military working dog, ‘Manic’ (see pictured below next to the memorial).
For more on 'Manic' and AWAMO :
"To love unconditionally, to serve unquestionably.
To trust beyond endurance.
Bearing no malice, loyal and protective They work, play, live, share, enrich, fight and die for us and with us, asking little in return. They are the animals.

DOGS NSW PUBLIC RELATIONS EVENTS COMMITTEE
Christmas 2025 Championship Show & Christmas
Party
The DOGS NSW Public Relations Events Committee hosted the DOGS NSW Members, Families and Friends Christmas Party on Saturday 20 December 2025.
Despite being only a few days out from Christmas Day itself, the night was well attended and we had the best entry for a single show event for 2025 at Orchard Hills.
Everyone arrived after lunch to set up the event and noted that the ground staff had worked very hard in preparation for the event. The sun was shining as members, full of Christmas cheer, started slowly arriving to get their dogs and gazebos ready. Carols were playing in the background and the atmosphere was electric. We were very lucky with the weather, Orchard Hills had a 39 degrees the day before as well as the day after the show.
The afternoon flew by, getting ready for the kids’ events, putting up decorations on the tree and preparing for Santa’s arrival. This year we had an outstanding number of members decorating their gazebos to add to the already festive atmosphere.
We had some wonderful donations and support this year from members:
• Royal Canin
• Heiniger
• Vegie Chips
• Benjamin Black
• Daniel Harmis Photography
• Robyn Foster & Arcticpalace Siberian Huskies
• DOGS NSW Staff
The evening event commenced with a Welcome to Country and an introduction to the evening by Events Committee Chair John Bryson.

As well as Mrs Lyn Brand and Mrs Carol Doherty who jumped in and helped with the large sweepstakes entry ensuring the show ran on time.
Thank you to our capable stewards along with Marilyn Parker on certificates. We were very aware of the tight timelines we were working to, but were pleased that the main attraction Santa Claus, arrived right on 8.00pm in a sleigh pulled by Robyn Foster’s family and friends’ beautiful Siberian Reindeers. Robyn, thank you for an amazing job.
The kids’ fun activities, along with the gifts and lollies, were all greatly received, and the children looked to be having a great night. There were pony rides and an amazing balloon artist in the kids' play zone, along with lots of games and the kids just loved it!
On behalf of the committee, I would like to personally thank Susie Kearnes, our very hard-working Committee Secretary, for the hours of dedication, ensuring the event went smoothly. Suzie really is the backbone of this event, and her contribution is greatly appreciated. Tanya Scales came on board this year as Chief Elf and was a great asset to the event including helping Santa source all the gifts and wrapping them. Thanks as well to photographer Daniel Harmis. Daniel capturing so many amazing images, creating lots of memories of the event.
Many thanks to Santa (Scott Ross) as well as elves Tracie Buckley, Rebecca Boylson, Sue Boylson and Penny Dalziel. Finally, the dedication of staff members Kerry Christofi and Abby Davis who do so much behind the scenes. Thank you all for your ongoing assistance.

Join us in 2026
Entries for the 2026 Sydney Royal are open and filling fast and whether you’re a long time Exhibitor or considering making your debut, the 2026 Show is not to be missed.
From the competition to the camaraderie, the Show has been an iconic Australian celebration of dogs since 1869 and under the stewardship of the Companion Animals Committee of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW, continues to grow and evolve.
Following its popular introduction in 2025, the Sydney FCI International is back in 2026 to provide an additional opportunity for Exhibitors and has been refined to enhance the experience. Judging for both the FCI and ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal classes for each breed take place on the same day, doubling the chance to show and win while Easter Show visitors can see their favourite breed twice on the same day.
The Show’s panel of international judges has been increased to five in 2026 and headlines a team of exceptional Officials across the entire Sydney Royal Dog Show. Mrs Mary White from Canada, Mr Boris Špoljarić from Croatia, Mr Antonio Almeida from China, Australian Miss Janelle Robbins and Mr Warner Céspedes Arias from Costa Rica bring a wealth of global experience and depth of knowledge to the conformation shows, as well as the Club Specialties running at the Royal. The Sweepstakes competition will take place on Saturday April 11 under the excellent eye of Australian Judge Mr Aramis Lim while a great opportunity exists for Junior Handlers to show under Janelle Robbins who’s been a longtime champion of the expansion of competition for Juniors in Australia.
With Easter falling in the first week of the Show, Obedience and Rally once again kick off the 12 day showcase while the crowd favourite Agility trial will provide a high-octane finale on April 13. The enormously popular Festival of Dog Sports is also back courtesy of sponsor Ora Pet Beds with entries opening in late January and more places on offer in the evening Trick Dog and Scent Work classes.

Extra Highlights
Day 12 combines the purebred with the pristine! While the Groomers take centre stage in the competition stakes with the ‘Dogs Australia Canine Grooming Championship’, the ‘Meet the Breed’ display gives clubs the chance to show off their breed to the multitudes of dog-loving Easter Show visitors.
Lunchtimes will be loaded with entertainment; the incredible Police Canine Team back to wow the crowds in 2026 along with the superstars of the Agility Dog Club of NSW.
Do you know a canine hero? The RAS is again on the search for two ordinary dogs who’ve proved to be extraordinary over the past year. Thanks to the Australasian Animal Registry, winners of the ‘Government Service Dog’ and ‘Assistance or Companion Dog’ categories will be awarded $1500 cash for their bravery, devotion or commitment to the human canine bond. Details on how to enter can be found on the dog competition page of the website, rasnsw.com.au
The Sydney Royal Dog Show takes place over 12 days, commencing April 2, but preparing for it can be a 12-month endeavour for many Exhibitors, as well as the organising committee. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or first timer, it’s an experience like no other and we hope you’ll join us in 2026.
Attending the Show
It’s all about planning! Make a list, then check it twice. When packing for an early start don’t forget crates and trolleys, benching chains, water, food bowls, chairs, portable fans, grooming gear, treats, bedding for the bench and your all important Exhibitor pack.
Your pack will contain an exhibitor manual along with your tickets and passes, please ensure you read this for crucial information such as bench sizes and directions to the showground as well as the pavilion. A board no larger than 450mm x 150mm displaying the registered Kennel and/or the dog’s name and the official prize cards and ribbons for the Show may be placed over the benches.

The pavilion opens at 6.30am and benching is any time between 6.30am and 9.00am. Entry to the Showground with a dog is not permitted after your allocated benching time. If you plan on using the Gate 11 dog and gear drop off zone, please take note of directions in your Exhibitor manual as your GPS is unlikely to take Easter Show road closures into account. Efforts to clear Australia Avenue for an improved vehicle turnaround procedure are ongoing but given the limited space, we ask that you assist by being prepared and staying in the stopping bay for no longer than 10 minutes.
You will receive a minimum of two One-Day Entry Passes in your pack; the second ticket is to enable you to bring someone with you to help. If using the Gate 11 drop off zone, please ask Security at Gate 10 for a wrist band to allow the driver to re-enter the Showground on foot after parking the vehicle. Alternatively, if you don’t have a trolley laden with gear and opt to head straight to the P5A carpark, it’s a flat walk across the bridge of approximately 600m to the pavilion. There is also a shuttle bus every ten minutes from the carpark that drops you off at Gate 9.
Don't Forget Parking
Exhibitor parking in P5A should be purchased along with your entries, or through your MyRAS account while entries are open. Parking is not controlled by the RAS, is limited and difficult to secure after entries have closed. If you forget, please call the office and we will endeavour to help but can’t guarantee additional passes will be available after the close of entries.

ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show: Toy Group Specials, Best Puppy In Show, Champion Junior Handler
Sydney FCI International: Group 4, Group 8.
It is imperative that Exhibitors check their pack when it arrives in the post to ensure the parking ticket purchased is included and is for the correct date. The green ‘Dashboard Slip’ also in your pack allows your vehicle to enter Gate 10 for access to the Gate 11 drop off zone. The purple ‘bench slip’ confirms you are bringing a dog/s into the Showground and notes your bench number and additional purchases such as a catalogue. The Event Office is unable to provide a replacement if a parking ticket is misplaced during the day.
Please note that under no condition are dogs to be left in cars or trailers in the carpark. Temperatures are often high during Showtime and quickly climb even higher in carparks. If any dogs are found in carparks, security, the Police, the RSPCA and the Companion Animals Section will be notified which may result in disciplinary action and Exhibitors being refused entry to future Royal Shows.
Benching Explained
Benches are built to a set layout in the pavilion and comprise giant, large and medium benches. It is possible to request a bench that is more suitable, in a different part of the pavilion or in a group but we urge you to do this as soon as you have purchased your entry and no later than one week after the close of entries.
Due to the large number of breed entries for the Sydney Royal, benching is allocated using a system which sorts dogs each day alphabetically by breed size and breed . This means if you are showing different breeds on the same day your dogs will almost certainly be benched in different parts of the pavilion. Benching requests should be emailed to the Event Manager: companionanimals@rasnsw.com.au outlining the day of showing, the breed/s, Exhibit name/s, Exhibitor name/s and the specifics of the request.
Benching requests made more than one week after entries have closed will be accommodated if possible.
Keeping Valuables
The bench area is restricted to Exhibitors only and there is approximately one metre between the public walkway fencing and your benches. All valuables should be kept out of sight, and with you at all times. There are lockers located outside the Dog Pavilion and Howie Café
to secure valuables if required and Exhibitors are urged to inform the Dog Office if they feel anyone is acting suspiciously. We do have volunteers throughout the pavilion but during busy times they cannot be ‘everywhere’.
Grooming
You MUST bring your own grooming supplies and we encourage Exhibitors to bring their own grooming tables. The Plush Puppy grooming area has dryers and standard grooming tables, but these facilities are suitable for small and medium breeds only. Power points are limited but Exhibitors can groom at their bench while being mindful of other breeds nearby.
Drug Testing and Vetting
To protect the integrity of Australia’s largest dog show, the 2026 ADVANCE™ Sydney Royal Dog Show will once again be conducting random drug testing. If your dog is undergoing you must fill out a Treatment Notification Form (TNF) and submit it to the dog office on the
There are several prohibited substances that are tested for, some of which may be necessary for the dog’s health and welfare. If known in advance, the dog may be given permission to be exhibited by the Veterinary Committee which examines the forms. If no form is submitted however, and the dog is tested and found to be positive, it may result in disciplinary action that could see you lose your title, ribbons and prizes.
Female dogs in oestrum are eligible to compete in conformation classes but not in Obedience, Rally, Agility, Trick Dog or Scent Work. Vetting of entire females will take place in 2026 for
Socialising Sensibly
The Sydney Royal Easter Show prides itself on being the ‘Social Royal’ with Exhibitors encouraged to catch up with friends and
meet new ones.
We do ask Exhibitors to remember that they are representing the Sydney Royal Dog Show inside the pavilion and to be sensible with alcohol consumption. The Sydney Royal has a strong RSA policy and does not condone drinking and driving. No bottles of alcohol are to be visible to the public and the assembly lawn and seating areas are alcohol-free zones.
Shopping
Our commercial stands will once again be available at the show for some retail therapy. We appreciate their support of the event and hope you will support them right back! A handy trick is to visit the stands at the start of the day before the crowds for a chat with the Exhibitor and uninterrupted spending!
The DOGS NSW ‘Meet the Breed’ stand is, as always, one of our feature exhibits. It’s located in prime position on the commercial walk and is a great way to promote your breed.
Contact DOGS NSW on info@dogsnsw.org.au to find out how you can contribute to educating the public on why pedigree and registered breeds make great family pets.
Companion Animals & Other Highlights
If you have some time during your day and someone to mind your dog, you might like to check out the Pet Pavilion in Hall 3 where we showcase our other Companion Animals competitions. It truly is a celebration of all creatures great and small with Rabbits, Cavies (Guinea Pigs), Cats, Rats, Aviary Birds, Frogs and Reptiles, all competing for Sydney Royal glory.
Of course, the Grand Parades are always a Show highlight, and we endeavour to ensure that dogs are front and centre of each one. In 2026 they will take place on Friday 3 April, Sunday 5 April and Friday 10 April at approximately 4pm and we would love you to be involved. If your Club would like to participate, we need approximately 8 people and 8 dogs for
each one. You get to keep the Sydney Royal Easter Show cap you wear for the parade and will also go in the draw to win free tickets to the 2027 Show.
On a Final Note......
The Sydney Royal represents so many things, extraordinary history and prestige, the celebration of our rural traditions and all the fun and entertainment of the Show.
For those in the world of dogs it’s also one of the biggest highlights on the competition calendar and a chance to showcase excellence in breeding, training and showing.
The Sydney Royal Easter Show is the largest annual ticketed event in Australia, and the RAS hopes you’ll be a part of its history in 2026.

Three theory nights across Northern Beaches and Ku-ring-gai areas, followed by an outdoor demonstration day on Sunday 9 November 2025, at St Ives Showground, gave families a chance to put their new dog safety skills into practice.
The program is created to reduce dog-related incidents, build confidence in children, and help families create safe, structured environments where relationships between dogs and humans can truly flourish.”

Whippet
Many people think that Whippets are skinny, nervous, fragile and won’t come back off the lead, but nothing could be further from the truth. They are versatile, athletic, muscular, robust, playful, confident and responsive.
History / Country of Origin - United Kingdom
A member of the Sighthound family, the breed developed in the United Kingdom, firstly as a poachers’ dog, then as the ‘poor man’s Greyhound’ for the North Country miners. While there are now limited opportunities to race Whippets, the breed has always been very popular as a family pet worldwide.
Appearance
Whippets come in all colours, either solid (black, white, blue, red, fawn) all shades of brindle, with or without white trim, and parti-coloured (and solid or rindle, broken with white). The colour range and markings mean that there is a huge variety of Whippets, but you can rest assured that the character of each and every one is the same.
If you look closely, you’ll see that Whippets are a different shape to Greyhounds and Italian Greyhounds. A Whippet should have a long, lean head and a body with a series of graceful curves. This is especially helpful when it wants to get its nose under a blanket, shimmy under and curl up into a ball.
Temperament
Whippets love life, whether chasing a leaf that’s fallen from a tree or curling up in your lap while you watch TV. They are funny, loving, with a definite sense of humour, usually at their human’s expense. They are not aggressive to other dogs or people and happily co-exist with other breeds. They will bark and alert at visitors, but more from excitement than hostility.
Training
Whatever your activity, your Whippet will fit in. They learn routines and adapt quickly, easily keep up with joggers, are excellent agility dogs, love lure coursing, make wonderful pets as therapy dogs and can be trained for the obedience ring. They are excellent conformation dogs and, best of all, are wonderful family companions.
There is a perception that you can’t let Whippets off-leash in an open area as they won’t come back, but that’s not entirely true. When let off their lead, they love nothing more than to run in a huge circle around you, normally up to 30 metres away. As soon as they’ve let off steam, they come back with a big smile. If there’s something interesting to chase, a Whippet will run after it; like any dog, your Whippet should be trained to come back as soon as it is called.

Amiable, dignified, with a gentle soul, the Whippet has a streamlined grace and is lightening quick when he has something to chase.
Suitability
Whippets are suitable for everyone: singles, couples, families of any size and owners of any age. They can happily live in houses with yards, townhouses and even units and apartments. Whippets fit in anywhere, on your lap and in your bed. Whippets gladly gravitate towards children and they can become good little friends. However, supervision is always important with young children.
They are not an aggressive breed and will also happily co-exist with cats, if they are introduced at a young age.
The males can be slightly more sooky than the girls, however they are all good cuddle monkeys.
There are also many fun activities you can do with your Whippet, which includes Lure Coursing, Obedience and Agility. If you want a laugh each day and a dog in your life, a Whippet is right for you.
Care and Health
With such a short, sleek coat, the Whippet needs minimal grooming. Regular clipping of toe nails, teeth-cleaning and the occasional bath is all that is needed. They are clean dogs by nature, which makes them an ideal house pet.
The major consideration in caring for a Whippet is keeping it warm; as they are thin-skinned and don’t have much body fat, they feel the cold more than most other breeds. Whippets need a coat in the cooler months: ask for a coat suited to a Whippet, so that the back is curved to fit the dog.
Whippets are a very healthy, hardy breed; they enjoy long lives (up to 14 -17 years). Auto-immune diseases have been linked to Whippets, but these are not common.

Beyond Obedience
Understanding Dogs through a Force-Free Lens
After more than twenty-one years in the dog training and behaviour industry; “which makes me older than I care to admit,” Sarah Rutten jokes, one thing has become abundantly clear: lasting change in dog training doesn’t come from force, control or intimidation. It comes from understanding. As the founder of The Canine Perspective and author of The Canine Perspective: Using Force-Free Methods to Unleash Your Dog’s Paw-tential, Sarah has built her career on helping people see dogs not as problems to be fixed, but as sentient beings to be understood.
Sarah’s path into the dog world, however, wasn’t linear. Before working with dogs, she tried her hand in real estate, office roles and other conventional careers. “I just couldn’t find a place where I felt I belonged,” she explains. A turning point came when someone suggested a simple exercise: draw two columns; one for what you’re good at, and one for what you love. If something appeared in both columns, it was worth investigating.
Two things landed firmly on both lists: event management and working with animals. As Sarah explored that intersection, one idea kept rising to the surface. “What about being a trainer?” She recalls. “Something about that felt right.” While she quickly discovered that almost anyone could call themselves a dog trainer, Sarah knew she wanted to do it properly. She researched courses carefully and chose one that aligned with science and ethics. That decision shaped the entire trajectory of her career. “It lit a fire I didn’t even know I had,” she says. “I found a level of passion I never expected.”
Over the years, Sarah immersed herself in canine behaviour, learning not just how to train dogs, but how dogs actually learn. Many dog owners come to training believing they need to be firmer, more dominant, or more “in charge.” These beliefs are deeply ingrained, often inherited from traditional advice that frames dogs as animals constantly testing human authority. Sarah tips this narrative head-on.
“Dogs aren’t trying to take over the household,” she explains. “They’re responding to their environment, their learning history and their emotional state.”
FEATURE
The dominance-based model of training, she notes, stems from misinterpreted studies of captive wolves, research that has long since been debunked. Yet its influence persists, often justifying the use of punishment, fear or physical force. Force-free training offers a very different approach. It removes pain and intimidation from the learning process and replaces them with clarity, consistency and reinforcement. When dogs feel safe, they are able to think, engage and learn.
Sarah often explains this difference by likening training to a classroom. In a punishment-based classroom, wrong answers are met with humiliation or punishment. Students freeze, confidence disappears, and learning shuts down. “That’s exactly what punishment does to dogs,” she says. Fear may suppress a behaviour in the moment, but it doesn’t teach understanding. In a force-free classroom, mistakes are met with encouragement. The message is simple: Nice try. Let’s try again.
Confidence remains intact, engagement increases and learning continues. This is why force-free training is effective not only for puppies and family pets, but also for dogs experiencing fear, reactivity or aggression.
One of the most common mistakes Sarah sees is the assumption that dogs “know better” and are deliberately choosing to misbehave. In reality, behaviour is shaped by reinforcement and unmet needs. Dogs bark, dig, chew and explore because these behaviours are natural and often rewarding. What people label as stubbornness or defiance is more accurately explained as confusion, stress, boredom, pain or accidental reinforcement. “If a behaviour is happening,” Sarah says, “there’s always a reason.”
Consistency plays a major role in helping dogs succeed. Dogs don’t need harsh rules, but they do need predictability. Inconsistent expectations create anxiety, while clear, consistent boundaries create security. Leadership, Sarah explains, is not about dominance, it’s about being fair, calm and reliable.
A dog’s age also dramatically shapes behaviour. Puppies are not naughty; they are learning constantly. “They’re tiny, furry scientists gathering data,” Sarah explains. Every interaction teaches them something about the world.
'Early training should focus on enrichment, gentle guidance and essential life skills that build confidence rather than fear.'
Adolescence, however, can feel like everything falls apart. “They hit the teenage phase and their brains fall out,” Sarah laughs. “It’s normal.” During this stage, dogs may appear forgetful or push boundaries. Patience, positive reinforcement and thoughtful management are key, as this phase is temporary when handled with understanding.
Senior dogs, Sarah believes, are often overlooked. Many people assume learning stops with age, but she is adamant that this is not the case. “It’s never too late,” she says. Older dogs can continue to learn and benefit greatly from training and enrichment, provided their needs are respected. Pain management, modified activities, choice and patience are essential, along with dignity. Senior dogs deserve engagement, not invisibility.
Throughout her work, Sarah emphasises that training is as much about the human as it is about the dog. Language matters. She avoids terms like command, dominance and alpha. “We’re not pack leaders,” she explains. “We’re guardians. We’re family.” Changing language changes mindset, encouraging cooperation rather than control.
Choice is another critical element. Dogs that are over-controlled often become anxious, while behaviourally healthy dogs benefit from autonomy within safe boundaries. Sarah also stresses the importance of environment. When a dog doesn’t respond, it is rarely stubbornness. More often, the dog is overwhelmed, distracted, unwell, or has not learned the behaviour in that specific context. Dogs are precise learners, and success depends on setting them up to succeed.
When it comes to fear, reactivity and aggression, Sarah is unequivocal. “Aggressive dogs do not need a heavy hand. They need understanding.” Punishment increases fear, and fear fuels aggression. Scientific research consistently shows that forceful methods escalate aggressive behaviour and can lead to shutdown, anxiety and confusion. In some cases, dogs subjected to punishment-based training deteriorate to the point of euthanasia. A force-free approach is not only effective, it is the safest option.
At the heart of learning is reinforcement. “All behaviour that gets reinforced gets repeated,” Sarah explains. Food is not a bribe, it is payment. Just as humans wouldn’t work without compensation, dogs shouldn’t be expected to either. Reinforcement can include food, toys, play, sniffing, access to the environment or attention. Understanding what an individual dog values is key.
Sarah’s approach is instinctive and highly individualised. Rather than walking into sessions with rigid plans, she listens closely to the nuances of each dog and guardian. Breed tendencies matter, but individuality matters just as much. Dogs are a species with shared needs, but every breed, and every individual, has unique drives, preferences and motivations. Teaching guardians how to identify and respect those needs is central to her work.
Several years ago, Sarah’s career was unexpectedly paused when she became seriously ill with mould illness. She spent four years unwell, during which her memory was significantly affected. “I was terrified I’d forget everything I’d learned,” she says. To cope, she began writing everything down. Over time, she wondered if those notes could become something more. In February 2024, she signed up for a writer’s intensive, marking the beginning of her book. Six months later, The Canine Perspective was launched, making it just outside the 100 of all Kindle titles and #1 on Amazon in 11 categories within 48 hours.
Now in recovery, Sarah is already looking ahead. She plans to begin writing her second book in February 2026, building on the growing public understanding that dogs are sentient beings with wants, needs and agency. The next chapter, she says, will explore how guardians can honour breed-specific instincts, provide safe outlets for natural behaviours, and deepen the two-way bond between humans and dogs. “When you truly understand your dog,” she explains, “everything becomes easier.”
Today, Sarah lives on the Sunshine Coast with her husband and their two pugs; “just us, by choice,” she smiles. Both run their own businesses. While the move from Ballina to Queensland came during her illness and required significant adjustment, she remains “a NSW girl at heart.”
Ultimately, Sarah’s message is one of compassion and hope. Dogs are forgiving. Guardians are learning. Behaviour change is possible without fear. “If you’re here, if you’re curious, you’re already doing better than you think,” she says. “It’s never too late to see your dog from a new perspective.”

Why Variety, Balance and Science Matter in Your Dog's Diet
An article i n partnership with Royal Canin
Feeding a dog well isn’t just about offering what they appear to “like.” True nutrition is about delivering complete and balanced diets that meet a dog’s needs at each life stage, size, lifestyle and health status. Puppies, adults and seniors all have different physiological requirements, and what supports an active young dog, will not suit a senior with lower energy needs.
Brands such as Royal Canin base nutrition on scientific research on how dogs grow, digest, sense and interact with food. This research shows that a single diet type doesn’t always meet every dog’s needs. Instead, a varied approach using dry and wet food formats can help enrich the dog’s feeding experience, while still ensuring precise, complete nutrition.
This article explores why nutrient balance matters, how different food textures support wellbeing, and how dogs’ senses guide the way they experience food.
Why Complete & Balanced Nutrition Is the Foundation
‘Complete and balanced’ is a common term for pet food brands, but it has a very specific meaning – diets that provide all the essential nutrients in the correct ratios, including proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fibre, to support everyday physiological functions such as growth, digestion, immunity and skin health.
Royal Canin emphasises that dogs require precise nutrient profiles, not individual ingredients. Different ingredients can have similar nutritional profiles and are also better for the environment. Their diets are formulated to meet these needs according to:
• Life stage (puppy, adult, senior)
• Breed or size
• Activity level
• Specific health needs (skin, digestion, dental, weight control, urinary health as examples)
This precision means that when dog owners follow Royal Canin’s feeding guidelines, the dog receives the right amount of nutrients each day - whether they’re eating dry food, wet food, or a combination of both.
How Dogs Experience Food - Their Senses Matter
Dogs do not perceive or approach food the way humans do. Their preferences are shaped by three key sensory systems:
1. Smell
Dogs have a highly developed sense of smell. Aroma is often the first, and most influential way they assess a meal. Wet food, because of its moisture content and texture, typically releases more aroma, making it particularly appealing to smell-driven eaters.
2. Taste
While dogs have fewer taste buds than humans, they are highly sensitive to certain nutrients, especially fats and proteins. Diets must balance taste with nutritional precision, which is why Royal Canin designs palatability based on nutrient-driven
preference, not simply flavour masking. All Royal Canin diets are rigorously tested for palatability, in fact it's one of the reasons they are the number recommended brand by vets and breeders.
3. Texture & Mouthfeel
Texture plays a major role in acceptance. Some dogs prefer crunch for stimulation and chewing. Others, particularly older dogs, can gravitate toward soft or mousse-like textures that are easier to lap or chew.
Royal Canin adjusts kibble shape, size, hardness and density for different breeds and jaw types, while their wet foods offer pâté, loaf, gravy or jelly formats to suit a range of preferences.
Understanding these sensory differences is essential when choosing a feeding approach that supports both nutrition and enjoyment.
Why Variety Helps: Using Wet & Dry Food Together
Royal Canin supports mixed feeding because each format provides unique benefits, and together they can create a richer, more enjoyable and nutritionally appropriate routine. It’s important to remember that pets often thrive on familiarity and don’t crave the variety of foods humans do. While we sit down to a meal as a social gathering and appreciate how the food looks, dogs tend to eat very fast and often alone. In fact, changing diets suddenly, can mean digestive upsets or refusing food.
Benefits
of Dry Food (Kibble)
• Concentrated nutrition due to low moisture content
• Helps support dental health (chewing helps reduce tartar formation)
• Easy portion control
• Convenient and shelf-stable
• Breed and size specific kibble shapes aid chewing and digestion
Benefits of Wet Food
• High moisture content supports hydration and urinary health
• Soft textures can help senior dogs or dogs with dental considerations
• Enhanced aroma makes meals more appealing
• Can support healthy appetite in fussy or sensitive eaters
Mixed Feeding: The Best of Both Worlds
Using wet and dry formats together can:
• Provide textural and sensory variety
• Support hydration while maintaining dental benefits
• Improve palatability for selective eaters
• Help maintain a healthy weight through controlled portions
• Offer flexibility – have them together or feed wet and dry foods separately.
According to Royal Canin’s feeding guidance, mixed feeding should still follow complete and balanced principles, with portions adjusted so total calorie intake remains appropriate. It’s important to note that when you mix and match brands, you will likely lose the complete and balanced diet profile, as not all brands have the same nutritional profile.
What to Consider When Designing a Feeding Plan
A balanced feeding approach, whether using dry or wet diets should consider:
Life stage and breed/size needs
Puppies need more energy-dense and protein rich nutrition and DHA (Omega-3) for their rapidly growing bodies and minds. Seniors often need support for joints, cognition and metabolism. Certain breeds can have more prevalent conditions, like labradors are more prone to weight gain and digestion issues due to fast eating.
What to Consider When Designing a Feeding Plan
Digestive tolerance
Texture, ingredient profile and transition speed all influence gut comfort. Royal Canin diets contain ingredients that promote the development of gut-friendly bacteria, helping improve digestion.
Complete & balanced status
Every food you include should meet AAFCO/FEDIAF standards unless used only as an occasional topper.
Hydration & texture needs
Wet food supports moisture intake; dry supports oral health and chewing satisfaction.
Sensory preferences
Smell-driven dogs may respond better to wet food, with many dogs loving the mechanical chewing and texture that can come from kibble.
How about Raw Foods?
If owners choose to include raw food as part of their dog’s diet, they should be aware there are risks that come with this:
• Without professional guidance, most raw and home cooked diets often lack proper ratios of nutrients and minerals your dog needs. Using scientifically developed diets ensures a complete and balanced nutritional approach.
• Raw diets can have a higher risk of contamination, with studies showing a higher bacterial load, like Salmonella, Listeria and E Coli.
• Antimicrobial resistance can also be an issue, with raw foods potentially containing multi-drug-resistant bacteria.
• Chewing bones can lead to choking, fractured teeth and GI blockage and should only ever be provided if they are the right size, quality and under your supervision.
Looking ahead: trends and the future of balanced feeding
From what Royal Canin describe, and from broader movements in pet nutrition, we can see some evolving trends:
• Mixed feeding becoming mainstream: Rather than seeing dry vs wet as competing formats, many vets and brands recommend a combination, leveraging the benefits of each.
• Sustainability and ethical sourcing: As with food for humans, concerns about ingredient origin, environmental impact and ethical treatment are beginning to influence dog food choices. Royal Canin only sources from audited long-term and accredited suppliers, often close to factories, to ensure freshness and quality. They also have the largest pet food packaging recycling scheme, with over 700 sites across Australia and New Zealand.
• Personalisation & flexibility: Tailored diets based on individual dog’s age, activity level, breed, and preferences rather than generic “one formula for all.”
In the future, we may see clearer standards for pet food regulation and the claims pet food companies can make, and this will ensure better education and less misinformation for pet parents.
The Future of Dog Nutrition: Personalised, Flexible and Science-Led
As more owners explore their options for feeding quality nutrition, several trends are emerging.
Mixed feeding is becoming mainstream, supported by both science-based brands and pet-parent preference.
Precision nutrition is increasing, with more diets tailored to size, breed and health status. Texture and sensory experience are recognised as key to supporting appetite and enjoyment.
The Future of Dog Nutrition: Personalised,
Flexible and Science-Led
Sustainability and sourcing continue to influence consumer choice. The future is not about choosing one feeding philosophy over another - it’s about understanding your dog’s needs and responding with balanced, evidence-based nutrition.
Your local Vet Professional is a great source of information on the changing nutritional needs of your dog as they age or have health issues.
Conclusion
A well-fed dog doesn’t need a single food for life. What they need is a complete and balanced diet for their needs now, offered in textures and formats that support their senses, their digestion, and their changing needs across life stages. You no longer have to compromise between taste and nutrition.
Royal Canin delivers precise, scientifically formulated dry and wet diets designed to support every breed, size and age. Using dry food for convenience and dental health and wet food for hydration and aroma, can create a feeding plan that is both nutritious and enjoyable in the long term.
In the future, we may see clearer standards for pet food regulation and the claims pet food companies can make, and this will ensure better education and less misinformation for pet parents.

Flying withDogs In-Cabin (Australia)
TIPS FROM OWNERS Words: Michelle Hatch
Introduction: Virgin Australia has officially announced it: from October 16, 2025, dogs will finally be allowed in the cabin on select domestic flights. It’s the first time in Australian aviation history this has been possible and it’s a huge milestone for Aussie pet parents.
Flying with your dog in the cabin is finally taking off in Australia. We asked frequent US dog owners what actually works: from carrier training, under-seat carrier fit, food/water timing, calm routines, and where to find airport pet-relief areas.
The hardest part of your next holiday shouldn’t be leaving your best friend behind.
For Australian pet parents, the arrival of in-cabin flights with Virgin Australia is a game-changer; it means we no longer have to choose between a holiday and our dog’s presence.
However, taking your small dog on their first flight (especially for destinations like the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast) comes with a critical question: How do I ensure it’s a smooth flight for both of us?
To answer this, Michelle Hatch from Pawtripper sourced real-world advice from experienced U.S. dog owners who fly in-cabin regularly. They shared their secrets for turning a daunting journey into a calm, predictable experience.
Meet the Travellers: Pup Passenger Flight Bios
This guide is based on first-hand interviews with U.S. dog owners who fly in-cabin regularly.
Siena: @sienainthecity (pictured left)
Breed / weight: Miniature Dachshund, 4.5 kg
• 1st Flight In-Cabin ~ LA to Dallas
• Vibe: calm, nap-loving, curious
• Carrier comfort: left out ~1 month; treat games made it a safe, happy place
• Pre-flight routine: early flight; no breakfast/water before a 3-hour hop
• Airport moment: delay jitters, a short terminal walk settled her
• In flight: silent; likely slept
• Top tip: acclimate to the bag weeks ahead
Miso @misopug (pictured right and above top)
Breed / Weight: Pug, 6.1 kg
12+ flights (LA to SF/PDX, LA to Paris)
• Vibe: chill, people-watcher, sturdy traveller
• Carrier comfort: month-long exposure; surprise treats inside; practice car rides
• Pre-flight routine: long walk; tries pet-relief area (hit-or-miss)
• In flight: sleeps most of the time; likes top open at the gate to see the action
• Gear tip: pick a carrier that attaches to your carry-on
• #1 advice: practice the carrier until it feels normal
How to Prepare a Dog for Flying (4-Week Plan)
To prepare a dog for in-cabin flying, make the carrier a safe, familiar space over four weeks – open at home, feed inside, practise short zip-ups and car rides, then do an under-seat rehearsal the week before you fly.
Every owner came back to the same idea: start early and make the carrier a safe, positive place. Siena’s human left the carrier out for about a month and turned it into a “fun, safe place” with treat games. Miso’s family layered in short car rides so the carrier “just felt normal” outside the house. Finn’s person had the crate around for months, occasionally closing it briefly and even carrying him in it so being zipped wasn’t brand new on flight day.
4-week carrier training plan: The best tip for in-cabin success
• Week 4: meals/treats in carrier; partial cover; aim for 20 – 30 minutes of calm hang-outs daily
• Week 3: short car rides with the carrier secured
• Week 2: add brief zip-ups (1 -3 minutes working up to 10–15 minutes) and reward those quiet exits!
• Week 1: under-seat fit rehearsal at home (make sure you’ve check airline dimensions)
Quick-start checklist
• Carrier out 30 days early: meals/treats inside
• Short car rides in the carrier (week 3)
• Zip-up practice to 10 – 15 minutes (week 2)
• Under-seat fit rehearsal (week 1)
• Flight day: long walk, light food, last potty, wipes + spare mat packed
What are Virgin’s cabin carrier rules?
Bookings are now open for flights between Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast and Melbourne and the Gold Coast. Check Virgin's website for updates on dates and routes.
Pet requirements set by Virgin Australia from their website:
Your pet must:
• Be a small cat or dog, with a combined weight (pet + carrier) of no more than 8kg
• Be at least 8 weeks old
• Be up to date with vaccinations
• Have a valid veterinary certificate (if required)
• Not be a prohibited breed
• Not have given birth within the last 7 days
• Fit comfortably in an approved pet carrier under the seat in front of you
• Remain in their closed carrier at all times except during security screening or whilst using the animal relief areas
• Must not enter the airport terminal outside of the carrier
Your carrier must:
• Be an approved pet carrier (max dimensions: 44cm L x 26cm W x 28cm H)
• Allow your pet to stand up, sit, turn around and lay down comfortably when the carrier is closed.
• Have all but one opening secured with cable ties prior to arriving at the airport.
• Be soft-sided, well-ventilated and escape proof
• Have a leak proof base and be lined with an absorbent mat (no puddles)
How it works
Virgin has designated specific seating areas for those travelling with their furry companions.
• As a pet-parent you'll be assigned one of our pet-friendly seats: 18A, 18F, 20A or 20F.
• If you’re travelling with friends or family who also have pets, you’ll all need to sit separately in the designated pet-friendly seats.
Pet seating
• Your pet must stay inside their carrier for the entire flight.
• The carrier must remain closed and stowed under the seat in front of you until the aircraft has arrived and you’re ready to disembark.
Keeping your pet secure
Pets must stay in their closed carrier at all times — both at the airport and onboard. The only exceptions are:
• When passing through security screening, or
• When using an airport animal relief area.
Travel for cats
• Heads up cat lovers, currently cats can only fly on the Melbourne to Sunshine Coast route.
How to book your pet in cabin
To book, call our Guest Contact Centre on 13 67 89. Be sure to book early because there’s a limited number of pets spaces on each flight.
Important things to remember:
• You’ll need to book more than 72 hours before travel
• You must check in in person with one of our Guest Services Agents no later than 75 minutes before departure
• Paws up! We have an introductory fee of $149* per flight for your pet to join you in the cabin
• Only one pet per guest
What should my dog eat and drink before a flight?
Give a light meal 2–4 hours before departure, offer only small sips of water and take a final toilet break just before security; skip feeding during short flights.
Keep it light and planned. Miso gets an extra-long walk before the airport and a pit stop at the pet-relief area, though they noted it’s hit-or-miss whether she’ll actually go. Siena flew early in the morning and skipped breakfast for a short hop, which aligned nicely with her usual nap time.
Practical Tips
• Morning flights pair well with natural nap rhythms
• Keep food light for short sectors; bring only tiny treats
• Use pet-relief areas if available, but carry wipes/liners just in case & do a longer walk prior to airport arrival
Where are airport pet-relief areas on trial routes?

Gold Coast (OOL): Two pre-security Assistance Dog Zones – one along the northern walkway (north of check-in) and one near international arrivals (south end); both with toileting space and pet-friendly water: https://www.goldcoastairport.com.au/accessibility/accessibility-overview/terminal-facilities?utm_source=chatgpt.com Sunshine Coast (MCY): External relief area only – use it before security.
Keeping Dogs Calm on Planes (Owner Tips)
Calm dogs come from calm routines – train quiet time in the carrier, use familiar scents or pheromone spray, board early if allowed, and settle your dog with brief, pre-tested distractions.
If you’re flying with a dog in the cabin for the first time, think “quiet crate at home = quiet dog on planes.” Once the groundwork is done, many small dogs simply sleep. Siena “didn’t make a sound” for the entire flight – classic morning nap energy. Finn’s human called the whole experience “surprisingly easy” after consistent crate practice. Miso likes watching the world at the gate with the carrier top unzipped (when allowed), but once onboard they zip and settle Miso per crew instructions.
Calm-onboard habits
• Rehearse quiet crate time at home; reward resting, not fussing
• Brief visibility at the gate can help some dogs; onboard, keep the carrier zipped and follow the crew’s directions
• Essential Calming Tools: For many owners, a long-lasting, low-odour chew or a portable lick mat is the ultimate distraction for take-off and landing. This helps focus nervous energy.
Is flying in-cabin right for my dog?
In-cabin flying suits small, well-trained, low-anxiety dogs; if your pup is over size/weight or still building confidence, consider a road trip or speak with your vet about alternatives. Not sure your pup’s a good candidate? Read our vet advice for flying with dogs before you book.
Flying suits calm, well-trained dogs best. Finn’s human puts it bluntly: “If your dog isn’t generally a calm dog, they aren’t going to like flying. Working with your dog to be well trained is the key.”With a little prep, you’ll be relaxing into the shared adventure and rewarded with memories together. Don’t be afraid to just go for it!
FAQ: Flying with dogs in the cabin
Q: What are the best tips for flying with a dog in the cabin?
A: The best tips centre on early preparation and training. The most crucial tip is implementing the 4-Week Carrier Training Plan outlined in this guide, making the carrier a familiar, safe place long before your flight. You should also choose an airlinecompliant carrier, keep pre-flight food light, and use long-lasting chews to manage anxiety during take-off and landing.
Q: How long can dogs stay in a carrier comfortably?
A: With training, many small dogs can rest quietly for 60–90 minutes. Build up gradually at home before you fly.
Q: Should I feed my dog before a short flight?
A: For 1-3 hour hops, most owners keep food light and offer a few kibbles at take-off/landing as a distraction.
Q: Is it different to travel with dogs on U.S. airplanes vs Australian flights?
A: The basics are the same. U.S. airports often have pet-relief areas; in Australia they may vary, so plan a last stop before security. Always check your airline’s current rules for air travel with dogs.
Q: What’s the best carrier feature to prioritise?
A: Airline-compliant size, a firm base, good ventilation and a way to secure it to your suitcase handle for easier airport movement.
Medical note: This article shares owner experiences, not medical advice. Always consult your veterinarian and check your airline’s current pet policy before you book.
Check in with your vet
The risks of air travel can be higher for some animals because of changes in altitude, pressure in the cabin and changes in temperature. Before you fly, it’s a good idea to visit your vet to make sure your pet is healthy and ready to travel.
Veterinary certificate
Virgin Australia may require a veterinary certificate for your pet; this is an official health report from a registered vet confirming your four-legged friend is ready to fly. It must be issued within 14 days of your flight.
A veterinary certificate is required if your pet:
• Has a medical condition or is unwell
• Has had surgery in the last 2 weeks
• Has recently sustained an injury
• Is a brachycephalic breed requires you to complete a specific (Brachycephalic Fit-To-Fly assessment form)
• Is between 8 weeks & 12 weeks of age
• Is over 12 years old
• Is pregnant
• Needs to be sedated on the recommendation of your vet
You can also ask your vet about:
• Preparing your pet for travel
• If your pet is on chronic medication, ensuring you have enough for the duration of travel, including possible delays
• Options for veterinary care (if required) at your destination
