Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
As we approach the final quarter of 2025, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers across every part of our organisation. Whether it’s in breeding, showing, or dog sports, your dedication makes it possible for our shared passion for dogs to thrive. Without the tireless efforts of our committee members, stewards, representatives, and show managers, our community simply could not exist as it does today.
A special thank you also goes to our elected Board of Directors, who generously give their time and expertise in service of our members.
In this issue, we highlight the many facets of our vibrant Dog World, particularly the growing participation in dog sports. We are deeply grateful to all the breed and sporting groups who volunteered their time at the Sydney Dog Lovers Festival, held on the 23rd and 24th of August. This event continues to be one of DOGS NSW’s premier promotional opportunities, and your contributions made it a great success.
On a more serious note, I would like to express sincere gratitude to the first responders who acted swiftly during a medical emergency at the Library and Archives Show on Sunday, 15 June. Thanks to their professional medical response and the immediate availability of a defibrillator, a long-time exhibitor, who suffered a life-threatening episode, received the critical care they needed. The outcome was truly remarkable, and we are incredibly thankful for the actions of those involved.
The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO KC, Governor of New South Wales

Dear Members,
This edition brings you important news of the 2025 RNSWCC Board Elections and features coverage of Dogs on Show and sporting events.
We begin with details of the 2025 RNSWCC Board Elections, which commence on the opposite page. Once again, voting will be conducted by Vero Voting on behalf of DOGS NSW, with the majority of votes cast via email for ease and cost efficiency. Please take the time to read the information on pages 7 and 8 carefully. Only members residing in the Metropolitan Region are eligible to vote in this election, as Directors representing other regions are not currently due for re-election. Eligible metropolitan members are encouraged to review the resumes of each nominee, beginning on page 9.
In June, the DOGS NSW Public Relations Events Committee hosted the annual Dogs on Show Open Day. The event welcomed an enthusiastic crowd, with Dr Rob Zammit as MC. Highlights included two Championship Shows, a vibrant Pageant of Breeds, two new Conformation workshops, and an array of sporting demonstrations. For a full event wrap-up, including words from Committee Chair John Bryson and stunning images by Nicole Lane and Cabal Canine Candids, see page 22.
Also featured in this edition is the Field Spaniel Club of NSW’s “Introduction to Scent Work” Workshop. Held in June, this workshop attracted dog lovers eager to delve into the world of canine detection. Participants left with a solid understanding of Scent Work fundamentals and how to get started in the sport. Coverage begins on page 28.
The Dances With Dogs and Trick Working Party also delivered an exciting highlight—a three-day workshop led by internationally renowned trainer Anastasiia Beaumont from France, followed by private sessions for participants. Read more on page 30.
This month’s breed feature celebrates the charming and agile Welsh Corgi (Pembroke and Cardigan) - a breed beloved worldwide and famously favoured by Queen Elizabeth II. Learn more about this delightful breed on page 18.

The job of a director is to ensure the continued success of the business. A Board of Directors needs to focus on the sustainability of the business.
Falling numbers of members, registrations and entries to shows threatens the existence of DOGS NSW. While Conformation shows may be suffering, Dog Sports are thriving, and we need to nurture all of these.
We must find ways to develop new revenue sources to ensure continued success if DOGS NSW is to survive. I was involved in the organisation and running of the first Fast N Furious shows, which was an outstanding success, both financially, and in terms of exhibitor feedback. This is the type of innovation we need to work on.
The current show calendar needs revision to help support our country affiliates. Shows held in close proximity reduce the entry at both.
As a director, my focus would be on these major issues, and I would be attempting to unite the board to focus on these major issues.

Welsh Corgi (Pembroke & Cardigan)
History
Welsh Corgi (Pembroke) were first bred in Pembrokeshire in Southern Wales as cattle dogs, or ‘homestead’ dogs. The breed is a combination of the local herding dogs, much like the black and tan Lancashire Heelers, and the Spitz breeds, like Vallhunds, brought over by the Vikings who landed around the Pembrokeshire coast.
The Cardigan Corgi was also originally bred to work closely with the farmers of Wales as a herder of cattle, guard dog and companion. These qualities mean that, even today, a typical Corgi likes to organise its family and is resilient and innovative.
Appearance
The Welsh Corgi (Pembroke and Cardigan) is a low-set dog with a body somewhat long in proportion to its short legs. It is sturdy, but athletic and active. The breed’s head has a foxy quality and appearance, with large upright ears and a bushy tail that should be carried high when the dog is excited or moving.
The Cardigan has a short or medium-length coat which comes in an intriguingly wide range of colours including red, sable, brindle, black, blue merle and black and tan.
Temperament
The Pembroke Corgi is both affectionate and highly intelligent. It is not a one person dog, but will relate to each member of the family differently, happily playing rough with teenagers, but knowing instinctively to be gentle around the very young or very elderly.
The Cardigan Corgi is biddable, ready to please, as well as independent and resourceful. The breed is totally devoted to those it loves and can adjust to almost any lifestyle, be it herding livestock or living in a city apartment.
The Cardigan Corgi’s short coat requires no stripping or trimming, but will benefit from a daily brush and an occasional bath. The breed is perfectly happy with a small yard, as long as the owner takes it on a brisk walk daily.
The Pembroke Corgi’s double coat needs to be brushed and combed through once a week to keep it looking its best. Dirt falls off a clean healthy coat, so the breed doesn’t need frequent bathing.
The coat will moult twice a year.
Health
The Welsh Corgi is a robust, generally healthy dog with an average life expectancy of 12-16 years, and often it is still very healthy and playful up until the end. There are no very common health issues, but the breed can have Hip Dysplasia and Von Willebrand Disease, a blood clotting disorder. Knowledgeable breeders have tests for these and screen breeding stock so that these conditions do not become more common.
Suitability
The Corgi makes a great family pet and loves to join in all the family activities. Because it is highly intelligent and a herding dog, the breed is at its best when it is well trained. Its best feature is its huge personality: the breed is full of fun and excels as a watchdog, as it has a keen ear and a remarkable memory.

How to improve yourPet’s Oral Health
Vetnex Natural Dental Care Plaque Control
Periodontal disease is the most prevalent chronic infectious disease worldwide, affecting over 80% of dogs and cats. In clinical practice we see periodontitis leading to progressive destruction of the tooth supporting tissues, bone resorption and tooth loss.
Bacterial plaque is the primary contributing factor in the initiation of periodontal disease. Undisturbed plaque bathed in saliva will become mineralised, forming calculus. Albeit not a direct contributor to the disease, mineralised dental plaque encourages addition plaque to attach, which fuels the disease process. Despite the existence of numerous methods of treating periodontal disease, dental plaque and calculus remain prevalent in the oral cavities of many of our patients and their control remains the critical means of prevention and therapy of periodontal disease in dogs and cats.
In a human study published in Clin Oral Invest (2015) 19:1507–1518, van Dijken et al found that daily intake of the algae Ascophyllum nodosum as an adjunct to customary oral hygiene showed a reduction of 52% in supragingival calculus formation and reduced plaque formation. They also found the calculus in the algae group was characterised by a more porous and less solid structure and was easier to remove than the calculus in the control group. This is relevant to us as veterinary dentists, as the calculus is easier to remove, which translates to shorter anaesthesia and dental procedure time.
In two veterinary studies by Gawor et al, published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science (2018) 5:168, doi: 10.3389/ fvets.2018.00168, and Weterynaria W Praktyce (2013) 10, the above results were replicated in dogs and cats when seaweed containing Ascophyllum nodosum was fed as a food supplement. These studies showed a reduction in plaque, calculus and the overall oral health index when compared to the control group.

OPEN DAY
Presented by DOGS NSW PR Events Committee
Photography: Nicole Lane | Cabal Canine Candids
Part of the Sydney Show calendar since 2010, Dogs on Show was again held at Orchard Hills in Sydney on the 14 June 2025. Sydney was blessed with a beautiful winter’s day to show off everything canine.
There were two Conformation shows, with over 1000 entries held on the day, as well as exciting demonstrations in Obedience, Herding, Dances with Dogs, Trick Dog, Drafting and Scent Work. In addition there was an Earthdog Trial by The Dachshund Club of NSW Inc as well as an Agility Trial, held by The Border Collie Club of NSW Inc. Many wonderfully-themed club displays were present with information, handouts and, of course, dogs to see. The highlight of the day for me was the very colourful Pageant of Breeds.
Winners of the Pageant of Breeds were as follows:
1st Place: Irish Wolfhound Club of New South Wales Inc
2nd Place: The Collie Club of New South Wales Inc
3rd Place: Afghan Hound Club of NSW Inc
Winners of the Breed Stand Awards were:
1st Place: The British Bulldog Club of NSW Inc
2nd Place: Field Spaniel Club of NSW Inc (pictured left)
3rd Place: Norwegian Elkhound
A very well-attended Conformation Workshop for trying out showing dogs was also held twice throughout the day, in the main ring, hosted by the Field Spaniel Club of NSW Inc.
The Macarthur Dog Training Club were again on hand, in Ring 2, with Obedience and Rally displays and try outs. It was the perfect chance to explore the world of dog sports, see dogs being judged and meet passionate breeders.
Major sponsors for the event were once again Royal Canin, supported by Knose Pet Insurance, Pawfect Nibbles, Marellan Show Ribbons, Sydney Dog Lovers Festival and DOG by Dr Lisa.
I would like to thank all the Club committees that took part in this showpiece day - the amount of effort put into it was amazing. Many people deserve thanks but at the top of the list is my good friend, Dr Rob Zammit, who worked energetically all day as MC for all the various displays in the main ring. Thanks also to Ross Sinclair who judged the Pageant of Breeds. Also all the DOGS NSW Public Relations Events Committee, including Susie Kearnes, Brigette Bryson, Tracie Donnelly, Abby Davis, Kate Davidson and the tireless Kerry Christofi, who did so much in the lead-up to the event and on the day, making sure every little thing went according to plan.
Special thanks also to my fellow DOGS NSW directors, who supported the day; in particular Angus McIlrath, who organised many of the dog sports to attend, as well as manning the barbeque; along with Sue McFadden who volunteered for the task of catering, for all the volunteers and judges.
The Rural Fire Service did a great job assisting everybody parking and directing them to the action and St Johns Ambulance were on hand as well.
They say it takes a village and I was certainly very proud of the way our village came together to present this wonderful event for everything canine.

The Golden Retriever Club of NSW Inc Social & Information Day
On Sunday 22 June 2025, The Golden Retriever Club of NSW Inc held a social and information day at Castle Hill Showgrounds in Sydney’s Hills District. We advertised far and wide and were hoping for a good turn out.
The weather was picture perfect and one count had the attendance at over 110 dogs and over 250 humans! The event set-up began at 7.00am and at 4 degrees it was certainly a chilly start! It warmed up to about 19 degrees and the champagne weather made it a wonderful day to be outside with our gorgeous breed. The time frame of the event was 10.30am to 2.30pm.
There were nine vendors in attendance, each with a wide variety of items for people to buy. These included toys, treats, beds, laser-engraved doggie items, all manner of training and enrichment items, beds, handmade leather leads, snuffle-mats and even travel books for people who want to take their dogs on holidays. A pet portrait artist also attended and was thrilled to have a few commissions for some portraits of family pets.
Golden Retriever Rescue had a stall and brought some of their “rescue successes” to engage with the public and their dogs.
Other areas for people and dogs to engage in were:
* a Winter wonderland photo booth, where dogs and their humans could dress up in a winter theme and take photos
* an Information Station: with health handouts we printed from the National Golden Retriever Council site. We also had posters displayed showing our beautiful breed involved in all the amazing things they do. This was the same display that helped our club win the Most Informative Breed Stall at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show
* a Puppy Behaviour and Training tent where families could come and talk to trainer extraordinare and Club Patron Luci Ellem for help and advice
NEWS
The Golden Retriever Club of NSW Inc
Social & Information
Day
* A Scent Work station, which was set up so members of the public could run their own dogs through the basics of scent discrimination. This proved to be a VERY popular activity.
We also had demonstrations of grooming, tricks, retrieving, obedience and RATG, and an explanation of a Conformation show class. This was described to the people watching, as a judge ran one of our Committee member’s Golden Retrievers through what happens when dogs are judged at shows.
A few games were played: egg, spoon and dog, relays and some property classes for best smile, floofiest tail and quickest sit. These brought much laughter and applause from the crowd. Prize bags were given out, supplied to us by one of the pet insurance companies who sponsored our event.
Our canteen did a roaring trade, as did our Club’s Golden Goodies stall, where we had Golden items for sale. We had a 100 Club, plus a raffle with some amazing prizes.
Two of our patrons delivered insightful talks on their respective areas of expertise. Wendy Donohue spoke about rescue work, highlighting the vital role it plays and emphasising the importance of families supporting Dogs Australia and registered ethical breeders. She also cautioned against the risks associated with purchasing dogs from unregistered puppy farms.
Our other patron, Dr Karen Hedberg BVSc, addressed canine health, stressing the importance of maintaining a healthy weight in dogs. As Chairperson of the Dogs Australia Canine Health and Welfare Committee, Dr Hedberg shared valuable knowledge during her talk. She then remained on the grounds to speak individually with attendees who had concerns about their dogs’ health.
The day was a resounding success and the efforts of the committee and members who stepped up to help were hugely rewarded. With all those dogs on the ground, there were NO incidents of growling or nervousness and the dogs had as much fun as their humans! A picture perfect day and one in which we were all so proud to be involved. It gave our club the chance to sing the praises of the most magnificent breed of dog!
Field Spaniel Club’s Scent Work Workshop Sparks New Passions
Ahead of August’s hotly anticipated Scent Work trial, the Field Spaniel Club of NSW’s “Introduction to Scent Work” Workshop in June welcomed dog enthusiasts keen to explore the fascinating world of canine detection work.
With newcomers coming together, what began as curiosity about this growing sport quickly became an evening of discovery, excitement and, of course, tasty treats as we learned about our dogs’ incredible capabilities. The workshop drew an impressive variety of breeds, showcasing the universal appeal of Scent Work. Gordon Setters worked alongside Golden Retrievers, while Whippets demonstrated their focus next to energetic Jack Russell Terriers.
Each dog brought their own style to the work, showing that success in Scent Work isn’t breed-dependent but rather based on the individual dog’s engagement and the handler’s understanding. The event’s inclusive nature was evident in its dualticket approach, welcoming both handlers who brought their dogs for hands-on experience, and those who came to learn without their canine partners.
This structure allowed curious dog owners to explore the sport without pressure while giving hands-on participants the chance to see their dogs’ natural abilities in action.
Expert Guidance from the Ground Up
Steph Betts from the Western Sydney Scent Work Club proved to be the perfect guide for this introductory journey. Her expertise shone through as she demystified the sport that transforms everyday dogs into focused detection partners. Participants gained valuable insights into the different odours used in competition, the judging criteria that determines success and the pathway from casual interest to competitive participation.
The educational component was particularly well-structured, covering the fundamental principle that Scent Work builds on dogs’ strongest natural sense while also strengthening the crucial bond between handler and dog.
Steph Betts reflected on how excited attendees were by how quickly their dogs took to the work.
“The variety of breeds here was a highlight for me, Scent Work is such an accessible sport and it comes naturally to dogs. I’m already looking forward to August’s event and seeing Scent Work continue bringing our canine community together.”
Food-Focused Fun
Who doesn’t love food to get the senses going?
With high-value treats like chicken, cheese and sausage, the workshop had a welcoming vibe and a tasty aroma while still sticking to the core principles of detection work. Watching dogs methodically search for these familiar rewards provided an excellent foundation for understanding how the same principles apply to formal Scent Work odours.
Community Warmth on a Cold Night
While the evening temperatures might have been brisk, the atmosphere remained inviting thanks to thoughtful hospitality. Hot chocolate, coffee, tea and muffins helped encourage conversations and deeper connections among participants. The night was a genuine community gathering. Attendees commented on the supportive atmosphere and willingness of everyone involved to share knowledge and encouragement.
Discovering Hidden Talents
Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of the evening was witnessing the “lightbulb moments” as dogs engaged with the search tasks. In real-time, handlers discovered capabilities in their pets they hadn’t previously recognised, while the dogs themselves were excited to use their natural abilities in a structured way.
Justine Teo from Gordon Setter Club of NSW attended with her Gordon Setter, Oakley.
“I have heard wonderful things about Scent Work and have been wanting to get my Gordon Setters into it, but struggled to get into a workshop. The Field Spaniel Club of NSW workshop came up and I jumped on it right away. The workshop was so well organised and Steph was very knowledgeable, answering all the questions from attendees and giving us the confidence to continue this great activity with our dogs. I feel more confident now after the workshop and plan to involve my dogs more and even enter some trials. I had a great time at the workshop and look forward to attending more.”
Building Foundations for the Future
The workshop proved a huge success, with participants leaving with a clear understanding of what Scent Work involves, realistic expectations about getting started, and
Building Foundations for the Future
most importantly, enthusiasm for exploring this engaging activity with their dogs.
Attendees expressed immediate interest in pursuing formal training and appreciated having a new perspective on their dogs’ capabilities.
The insider tips shared throughout the evening provided practical guidance for those ready to take the next steps, while the relaxed atmosphere ensured that even the most tentative participants felt comfortable asking questions.
A Perfect Introduction
By creating an environment where both dogs and handlers could explore new possibilities without pressure, the Field Spaniel Club of NSW successfully planted seeds for future involvement in this rewarding sport.
As participants headed home on that cold evening, many carried more than just the memory of a pleasant night out. They carried new understanding of their dogs’ remarkable abilities, practical knowledge about an engaging sport and the inspiration to continue exploring the incredible partnership that Scent Work represents. We also gave certificates, ribbons & a Sniff & Eat samples out to all our attendees.
For the Field Spaniel Club of NSW and our friends at Western Sydney Scent Work Club, this evening represented not just successful education, but successful community building around a shared passion for celebrating the amazing capabilities of our canine companions.

In June, the Dances With Dogs and Trick Working Party proudly hosted a highly successful three-day workshop with Internationally Renowned Trainer, Anastasiia Beaumont from France. The workshop was followed by a fourth day of private lessons for individual participants.
Anastasiia, who currently competes with her dogs Yuki and Salsa, brought with her a wealth of experience and inspiration. She has conducted training sessions and workshops across Europe, including in Switzerland, Belgium, Poland, Estonia, Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain and Israel.
Her impressive list of achievements includes:
• Winner of the European Challenge 2018 (Grand Prix France)
• Finalist in Freestyle at the OEC 2019
• Vice European Champion 2021 (OEC Individual Results)
• 1st Place – Team World Champions 2022
• DDI French Champion in HTM and Freestyle 2024
• Finalist on Romania’s Got Talent 2024
With such an incredible resume, we were thrilled to welcome Anastasiia to Australia. She also conducted workshops in Queensland, generously supported by the Dances With Dogs Club Queensland, who played a key role in the event’s organisation.
Participants travelled from across New South Wales, Melbourne, and the ACT to take part—and they were not disappointed. Anastasiia shared her expertise on a wide range of topics, including:
• Teaching both beginner and advanced moves
• Developing choreography
• Helping handlers truly dance with their dogs
Throughout the workshop, dogs and handlers were transformed into true dance partners, learning to move with flow, precision, and rhythm. The result was an unforgettable learning experience that left everyone inspired, motivated, and eager for more.

Views and opinions expressed in this magazine are those of the correspondents and contributors and not necessarily those of the editor, DOGS NSW, the printers or other contributors. DOGS NSW will not accept anything that is poorly written, offensive or defamatory in tone or nature and will reject subject matter that is deemed as not being in the best interest of the organisation, its policies and Code of Ethics. All material is accepted in good faith and the accuracy of the contents of any material submitted is the responsibility of the contributor. Names and addresses of contributors may be withheld from publication on request but must be supplied. While every effort is made to ensure that all material is reproduced correctly, DOGS NSW accept no responsibility for any error.
NOTICE TO ADVERTISERS
The Competition and Consumer Act came into force
on 19 April 2011. Certain provisions of the Act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the Act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the Act are strictly complied with. Advertisers are warned that it is their responsibility to be able to substantiate any statements or claims made in advertisements. In cases of doubt, advertisers are asked to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.
DISPUTES
From time to time, members refer to DOGS NSW matters in which it is not appropriate for our organisation to become involved. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of dogs. These are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual agreements between parties. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts and not by DOGS NSW.
DISCLAIMER
Members are requested to refrain from referring such matters to DOGS NSW. They are issues of a private or domestic nature and should properly be resolved by the courts or the Department of Fair Trading.
The breeders who appear throughout this magazine are merely breeders that DOGS NSW understands may have litters for sale. In providing you with their details, DOGS NSW makes no representations as to the reputation of any breeder or as to the soundness or suitability of any puppy you may decide to acquire from any breeder. You must satisfy yourself that any puppy you may decide to acquire is healthy, sound and meets your requirements. DOGS NSW accepts no responsibility in respect of the information contained in the magazine or in respect of any puppy that you may decide to acquire from any breeder in it.
All breeders who are current members of DOGS NSW have agreed to abide by the DOGS NSW Regulations, including the Code of Ethics.
