“Dachshund is a German word meaning ‘badger dog,’ and as the breed name suggests, the Dachshund was developed to enthusiastically dig his way into a badger den and dispatch its occupant. The Dachshund’s long, low body was custom-made for this dirty, subterranean work and these tireless little dogs are game for anything. " ~AKC

Chairman's REPORT
Dear Members,
As we close out 2025, I reflect with pride on the progress DOGS NSW has made. It has been a year of innovation, community connection and renewed focus on our purpose.
One of our biggest achievements has been the way we have promoted our sports. Initiatives such as SprintDog™ have highlighted how dog activities can appeal to a broader audience, acknowledging that today’s owners are often looking for fun, family-friendly events alongside their dogs. At the grassroots level, community promotion has been essential. From Bunnings BBQs to First Aid courses for dogs, we have been out in the public space, reminding families that DOGS NSW is the first place to turn when it comes to responsible dog ownership.
Our events remain strong and continue to grow. The Sydney Dog Lovers Festival had a great turnout from our breeders and the Canine Sports Spectacular showcased not only our dogs but also the variety of sports our members enjoy. These events allow us to connect with the public in ways that are both educational and inspiring.
A great area of growth and popularity are the Grooming competitions.
I am also pleased with the recognition DOGS NSW has gained as a respected stakeholder with the NSW Government, ensuring that our voice is heard in important legislative discussions affecting dog owners.
Innovation has been a theme throughout the year. The Fast N Furious show format brought fresh energy and flexibility. New initiatives will help us remain relevant and engaging.
I was honoured to be President in 2025 and warmly welcome the new Board members who bring fresh ideas and energy to our organisation.
Looking forward, I encourage our focus for 2026 to be positivity and inclusivity. Negativity holds us back; working together will move us forward. Let us celebrate our staff, support our regions, promote purebred dogs, and continue to inspire public participation in our sports.
Kind Regards
Lyn Brand
DOGS NSW President
Her Excellency The Honourable Margaret Beazley AO KC, Governor of New South Wales
The Dog Lovers Festival has come and gone for another year and it's popularity seems to be ever increasing, particularly as the organisers merged both the Cat and Dog Lovers Festivals together this year for the one admission fee. Over the weekend there were 25,600 visitors with an audience crossover of approximately 53% into Dog Lovers Festival and 44% into Cat Lovers Festival, increases of 23% and 15% respectively.
DOGS NSW successful participation at the event was amplified by the participation of approximately 16 breed and sport clubs, each bringing their own expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm, celebrating the diversity of pedigree dogs and the many sporting activities you can enjoy with them. There was a dynamic schedule of demonstrations and information sessions designed to educate, entertain and inspire visitors. Coverage of the event can be viewed from page 12.
The Field Spaniel Club of NSW launched their inaugural Scent Work Trial on Sunday 17 August with 170 entries representing 99 enthusiastic dogs and their handlers. With the trial's "Open to All Breeds" format, well-respected NSW Judges Christine Stani and Tracie Donnelly, a wellorganised, friendly club welcome, combined with great food, the scene was set for a most successful day. Coverage of the trial commences on page 24.
Kate Davidson interviewed Herding Working Party Convenor Ann Moy on the vision of the Herding Program in NSW. The article commences on page 28 and is accompanied by some wonderful herding photography by Linda Leman.
Following this is news on NSW member Jess Kimpton and her Border Collie 'Stitch' who is representing Australia in the International Sheepdog Trial in New Zealand. Caroline Zambrano reports on page 32.
In other news we have the Breed Talk/Grooming Seminar for Spaniels by FCI All Breeds Judge and Grooming Judge FCA, Gerardo Paolucci (Argentina); the Photographic Winners from the David Roche Gallery (SA); 'NOT DOGS'new evidence shows dingoes are on their own evolutionary path; VetChat launches Australia's first Veterinary Telehealth Industry Report.
The Spotlight breed this month is the plucky Dachshund. Intelligent, lively, courageous and quite bold, this breed has three coat types: Smooth, Long-Haired and Wire.' September's 'Vetnex' Competition winner was Kirsten Barouch. Congratulations Kirsten!

Best in Show 2025 winners announced
The David Roche Gallery in South Australia, is thrilled to announce the winners of the inaugural Best in Show 2025 Australian Photographic Dog Prize exhibition. The Prize, which called to capture the essence of the canine spirit, was open to amateur, professional and young photographers with a first prize of $5000. The Young Photographer (1218 years) category offered a first prize of $500 and the People’s Choice Award offered $500.
From 250 entries nationwide, 80 exceptional finalists were chosen across the categories of Dog portrait, Dogs and companions, Dogs in action, and Puppies.
First Prize: Amateur or Professional Photographer $5000
Legacy of Turnix 2025 by photographer Alicia Adamopoulos of Adelaide (pictured right)
Entry: “Photographed in his loungeroom in Hahndorf, South Australia, on 16 May 2025, 96 year-old Des Delaine sits quietly with the last three Pointers of his beloved Turnix line. Surrounded by trophies and memories, the image reveals the deep, unspoken bond between a man and the dogs who have been his lifelong companions. A breeder and judge devoted to the Pointer since childhood, Des now faces the end of his breeding journey, capturing a moment of love, loyalty, and shared history.”
Co-judge and Australian animal photographer, Alex Cearns OAM said: “This photograph is very poignant, with a sombre colour treatment and excellent storytelling by emphasising a lifetime of memories in the background. It successfully creates an end of the era atmosphere. The composition is beautiful with the dogs almost circling their human. Technically it’s brilliant and combined with the emotional pull, it is very deserving of first prize.”
Young Photographer (12-18 years)
First Prize $500
Mavis and Darcy 2025 by photographer Isabella Rogers of Adelaide. (pictured right)
Entry: “This photograph features my nana, Mavis and her dog, Darcy. I spent the day with my nana and wanted to capture the bond between her and her dog. Darcy is very special to my nana as she got her after the passing of her partner.”
Co-judge Robert Reason, Director of David Roche Gallery said: “There is a strong and emotional connection between the subjects, you immediately feel their love, connection and bond. A gentle soft light comes across from the right beautifully highlighting the moment between Mavis and Darcy.”
About Best in Show 2025: Australian Photographic Dog Prize
As the nation’s only biennial art prize dedicated to domestic dogs, Best in Show 2025 pays homage to the legacy of its founder David Roche AM (1930-2013) who was a canine breeder, exhibitor, judge and art collector. Today, his home Fermoy House, is the foundation of not just his art collection, but hundreds of canine show sashes, ribbons, trophies and photographs.
NOT DOGS - new evidence shows dingoes on own evolutionary path
Expert commentary by CQUniversity Psychology Senior Lecturer Dr Bradley Smith, with UNSW research fellow Kylie M Cairns, Deakin University’s Professor Euran Ritchie, & University of Sydney Associate Professor Thomas Newsome.
For decades, scientists, policymakers, graziers and land managers have been locked in a surprisingly high-stakes debate over what defines a dingo. Are these wild canids their own species? Or are they simply feral dogs?
The intensity of the debate can seem baffling. But the naming of animals influences how they are perceived and managed. The dingo debate has very real consequences for conservation laws, cultural recognition and respect, and the future of one of Australia’s iconic animals.
In 2020, researchers proposed four conditions dingoes would have to meet to be considered separate from domestic dogs: reproductive isolation (they don’t mate and produce fertile offspring), genetic distinctiveness, independent evolutionary path and distinctiveness from South-East Asian village dogs, which superficially resemble dingoes.
In our new research, we lay out the scientific case showing dingoes do indeed meet these requirements, across genetic, behavioural, ecological and archaeological evidence. We now have a clear answer: dingoes are distinct.
Australia’s wild canines have been on their own evolutionary path for thousands of years. As a distinct lineage, they should be recognised in their own right as a species or subspecies. They are not Canis familiaris, the domestic dog. They should be named either Canis dingo or Canis lupus dingo
Species aren’t always in neat boxes
One of the greatest challenges for modern taxonomy is how to categorise “species” that don’t fit in neat little boxes but exist along a continuum.
It’s harder still for species whose long and significant associations with humans can lead to substantial changes that are evolutionarily significant.
It’s widely accepted domestic and wild animal populations should be distinguished and be given different scientific names. Domestication is often portrayed as a simple before-and-after event. But this isn’t accurate.
Domestication is a long, messy continuum. Some domesticated species such as cattle and modern dog breeds depend on humans for their survival. But dingoes are different. They have lived alongside people but are also entirely capable of surviving without us, and have done so for thousands of years.
In evolutionary terms, what matters is the trajectory. Did human contact fundamentally alter the appearance, biology and behaviour of the species, locking it into a domestic lifestyle? Or did human influence have little effect, meaning the species has been shaped primarily by natural selection in the wild?
Do dingoes meet the criteria to be considered taxonomically distinct?
Our research shows how the four conditions have been met to consider dingoes separate:
1. Reproductive isolation
Dingoes have been separated from other Canis lineages for 8,000-11,000 years. Genetic studies show dingoes have little contemporary interbreeding with domestic dogs, even when they live in the same areas. While all Canis species can interbreed and produce fertile offspring, differences in breeding seasons and behaviour act as natural barriers. Unlike dingoes, domestic dogs rarely establish wild, self-sustaining populations.
2. Genetic distinctiveness
Genome-wide analyses reveal dingoes descend from an ancient “eastern” dog lineage, while most modern domestic dogs
2. Genetic distinctiveness
come from “western” and “Arctic” dog lineages. Since their arrival in Australia, dingoes have remained genetically isolated.
3. An independent evolutionary lineage
From a genetic point of view, dingoes are more distinct from domestic dogs than domestic dog breeds are from each other. Modern dog breeds have undergone waves of mixing and human selection, while dingoes have not. This is why dingoes lack the genetic adaptations to starch-rich die ts that domestic dogs evolved alongside agriculture and human contact.
Dingoes have carved out their own ecological niche in Australia’s unique environments, from deserts to snowy mountains. They have developed separate traits such as hyperflexible joints and a single breeding season over autumn and winter. By contrast, humans have heavily shaped the evolutionary path of domestic dogs, making them reliant on us.
4. Clear up whether dogs found in South-East Asia are dingoes
Some researchers have suggested dingo-like village dogs in South-East Asia are actually dingoes. While dingoes share some ancestors with these dogs, modern genetic evidence shows dingoes and their closest relatives, New Guinea singing dogs, are a separate population.
What’s in a name?
The question over how dogs evolved is not yet resolved. Some taxonomists believe dogs are a subspecies of wolf, while others disagree. Given this uncertainty, giving dingoes a unique scientific name can be done in two ways.
If we consider dingoes distinct from both dogs and wolves, the most appropriate name would be Canis dingo — recognising the dingo as its own species with a long, separate evolutionary history.
But if dingoes are not distinct from wolves, the correct name would be Canis lupus dingo. This would treat it as a subspecies of wolf, while still acknowledging its wild lineage separate to domestic dogs.
The name of the dingo matters
There is real power in the name of a species.
Under some state laws, dingoes are defined as “wild dogs”. This means dingoes are targeted for lethal control – even in many national parks. If treated as a domestic dog, dingoes can be ineligible for official threatened species lists.
As a result, the species is often overlooked for targeted conservation, while its culturally significant role for many First Nations peoples is often not recognised nor respected.
Defining dingoes as a distinct species or subspecies would allow governments to differentiate them from domestic dogs in laws, policies and conservation programs, and align western science with First Nations knowledge holders who have long distinguished between dingoes and dogs.
Ending decades of confusion will take work
To clear up long-running disagreement over the dingo, we believe the time has come for an independent, evidencebased review by a national scientific body. This would bring together geneticists, ecologists, taxonomists and First Nations representatives.
This approach helped untangle similarly knotty problems overseas, such as the United States National Academies’ review to settle the taxonomy of red and Mexican wolves.
An Australian review could finally end decades of confusion for the dingo and ensure our laws reflect the most up-todate scientific evidence.
Taxonomic debates might sound obscure. But this naming question will shape the future of one of Australia’s ecologically and culturally significant animals.
We believe the evidence shows the dingo is not a domestic dog – it’s on its own path. The question is whether Australia can accept this evidence.

Breed Talk on Spaniels
An Unmissable Opportunity for Breed Enthusiasts
Words ~ Kath Purkis
It’s always special when the DOGS NSW Canine Grooming Committee opens its doors to welcome international expertise. The Breed Talk on Thursday 28 August 2025 featuring FCI All Breeds Judge and Grooming Judge FCA, Gerardo Paolucci from Argentina (pictured left) , was a rare event that combines passion, knowledge and practical wisdom in ways that can transform how we understand and appreciate our beloved Spaniels.
Adding to his credibility as a grooming expert, Paolucci maintains English Setters at home in Argentina, demonstrating his deep commitment to pedigree breeds and their proper care and presentation. His visit to Australia represents a unique opportunity to tap into international perspectives and techniques that might otherwise remain thousands of miles away.
What made this event particularly compelling was its comprehensive scope. Rather than focusing narrowly on just one aspect of Spaniel care, Paolucci covered the full spectrum, from first hand learning trade secrets to the modern techniques that showcase them at their finest in the show ring.
He explained how the best dog professionals think about their breeds. They don’t see grooming as separate from breed history, or show presentation as disconnected from a dog’s working heritage. Instead, they understand that excellence in any one area requires appreciation for the whole.
Gerardo did a live demonstration on a Field Spaniel as part of the workshop. There’s something irreplaceable about watching an expert’s hands at work, and asking questions, in real time, about the subtle insights that emerge only in live conversation.
The “Tips of the Trade” portion of this event provided invaluable, difficult-to-capture insights that can only come from direct observation and interaction.
Perhaps, most importantly, events like this remind us that DOGS NSW is about community. When enthusiasts gather to learn and share, everyone benefits. Novices gain confidence and direction. Experienced hands pick up new techniques, and our breeds themselves, benefit from the raised standards and deeper understanding that result.
The Spaniel breeds, with their diverse purposes, temperaments and grooming requirements, offer endless opportunities for learning and refinement. Whether you’re drawn to the Field Spaniel, Clumber Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel, or any of the other distinctive Spaniel varieties, this event provided something valuable.
“An informative, practical and hugely enjoyable seminar” ~ Anne Brophy
“Gerardo was fabulous and I went home immediately to try the grooming techniques he taught us.” ~ Kath Purkis
The DOGS NSW Canine Grooming Committee deserves recognition for arranging this special event. By bringing together breed enthusiasts, grooming professionals, and show competitors under one roof, they’re fostering the kind of knowledge exchange that strengthens our entire dog community.
DOGS NSW Canine Grooming Committee continues to demonstrate its commitment to breed education and excellence by hosting events such as this.

The 2025 Sydney Dog Lovers & Cat Lovers Festivals achieved some significant milestones. Together, the combined festivals featured 16 sponsors and event partners and 256 exhibitors. Visitors enjoyed a blend of Canine and Feline inspired entertainment and education delivered via 9 major attractions across the two Festivals. For the Dog Lovers Festival, highlights included the ADVANCE™ Stage hosted by Shelly Horton, Kurgo®DockDogs, the Vitapet Arena, and Pat-APooch presented by Barney.
Other guests across the two Festivals included Brodie Young, Lara Shannon & Dogs Down Under, Jamie the Dog Trainer, ABC Muster Dogs’ Marlene Brewer & Hudson, The Dog House Australia’s Courtney Agius, DOGS NSW Dances With Dogs, Saba Sayed and Rose Horton.
The combined Festivals attracted over 25,600 visitors* with over 80% stating that the dual event format provided ‘good value for money’. With an audience crossover of approximately 53% into Dog Lovers Festival and 44% into Cat Lovers Festival**, individual attendance estimates are 19,000+ for the Dog Lovers Festival and almost 17,000 for the Cat Lovers Festival – increases of 23% and 15% respectively.
Attendance
For 2025, Dog Lovers & Cat Lovers Festivals introduced free cross-entry between the two Festivals, recognising that around 30% of households with a cat also have a dog (and vice versa). In a cost-of-living crisis, this provided additional value for visitors and helped drive significant footfall through both festivals.
Despite the challenges of two weeks of very poor weather leading in the Festivals, and a final round AFL match scheduled at last minute in the Sydney Olympic Park precinct, this year’s combined Festivals achieved a marked increase in overall attendance for both events. Whilst the combined attendance achieved 25,609 unique visits, the audience cross-over between Festivals equates to estimated individual show attendances of 19,342 for Dog Lovers Festival and 16,947 for Cat Lovers Festival - an increase of 23% and 15% respectively. This result is an encouraging endorsement of the decision to co-locate the two Festivals, and provides a sound platform to grow both the Festivals and their audience in 2026.
Visitor Insights
Post-Festival surveys of a large visitor sample revealed that the primary motivation for attending was to ‘Purchase Products & Services’ so visiting exhibitor stands was again the stand-out attraction. Impressively, 72% of visitors across both Festivals made a purchase, with 25% spending between $50 and $100 and 40% spending over $100.
Visitor satisfaction was strong, with the Dog Lovers Festival achieving a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 50 and the Cat Lovers Festival an NPS of 47 - both regarded as excellent results that reflect high customer loyalty.
The co-location proved to be a big success for both Festivals too, with 44% of Dog Lovers Festival visitors attending the Cat Lovers Festival, and 53% of Cat Lovers Festival visitors attending the Dog Lovers Festival.

Exhibitor Feedback
All exhibitors were provided an opportunity to provide feedback per the post-festival survey, and on most measurables, they indicated that the 2025 festivals outperformed the 2024 iteration. Face-to-face feedback has been mostly positive, with a strong intention to rebook for 2026.
Key to note is that both Festivals well exceeded event industry benchmarks on visitor quality, quantity, and meeting new customers.
DOGS NSW at DOG LOVERS FESTIVAL 2025
Connecting with Thousands of Dog Lovers at Sydney Olympic Park
Dog Lovers Sydney 2025 proved to be a resounding success for DOGS NSW, once again cementing our position as the leading authority on pedigree dogs and canine sports in New South Wales. Held on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August at Sydney Olympic Park, the event attracted thousands of passionate dog owners, families, and future dog lovers, providing an invaluable opportunity for us to showcase the incredible diversity of dog breeds and sports.
A Prime Location & Stand-Out Presence
Thanks to the efforts of Kerry Christofi, DOGS NSW was allocated a prime position right alongside the Advance Stage – an enviable location that ensured constant visibility and strong foot traffic throughout the weekend. The layout of our stand created an inviting and interactive space for the public to stop, ask questions, and participate in our many activities.
Across the weekend, our stand and supporting breed clubs ran a dynamic schedule of demonstrations and information sessions designed to educate, entertain, and inspire visitors. Highlights included:
• Dog Sport demonstrations showcasing agility, rally, and other exciting canine activities
• Dancing Trick demonstrations that had the crowd cheering and smiling
• Basic Obedience displays, giving new dog owners practical tips they could take home
• Interactive information sessions on responsible dog ownership
• Meet a Breed opportunities, introducing visitors to a variety of purebred dogs
• Pat a Pooch sessions, easily one of the most popular parts of the weekend
Many sessions were so popular they reached standing-roomonly capacity, with six dedicated staff members managing seating and ensuring smooth session transitions.
Breed Club & Community Support
Our success was amplified by the participation of approximately 16 breed and sport clubs, each of whom brought their own expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm to the stand. Together, we created a lively, educational hub that celebrated the diversity of pedigree dogs.
A special mention goes to the Field Spaniel Club of NSW and The Siberian Husky Club of NSW, who worked hand-in-hand with our volunteers to engage with the crowds and answer a steady stream of questions. We would also like to recognise Kath Purkis from the Field Spaniel Club of NSW and Fi Knight, from The Siberian Husky Club of NSW, whose support and assistance were invaluable over the two days.
Volunteers: The Heart of the Event
Our stand was managed and operated by an exceptional team of DOGS NSW volunteers. Their dedication, professionalism and warmth ensured every visitor had a positive experience.
President Lyn Brand was also in attendance, with her much-loved dog Tanner , who quickly became a star attraction and a favourite with the crowd.
SHOWS
Pat-a-Pooch – A Public Favourite
The Pat-a-Pooch sessions were a clear highlight of the event, giving families, particularly children, the chance to sit, cuddle and connect with our dogs in a relaxed and safe setting. These sessions generated an extraordinary level of public engagement and provided an ideal way to promote responsible dog ownership while allowing people to experience the gentle nature of our breeds first-hand.
Looking Ahead
The Dog Lovers Festival organisers once again demonstrated their ability to deliver a world-class event with high public attendance and exceptional engagement opportunities. We strongly encourage all breed and sport clubs seeking to raise their profile and connect with the public to consider participating in future events – it is an excellent way to promote your breed and share your passion for dogs with a wider audience.
Special Acknowledgements
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this successful weekend:
• DOGS NSW Staff members Kerry Christofi and Abby Davis for their ongoing dedication and preparation work to ensure our stand was ready to welcome visitors.
• Chris Gedzyk and the Grounds Staff Team, for their outstanding efforts during bump-in and bump-out operations.
• Our tireless volunteers and Committee members, without whom this event would not have been possible.
• All participating breed clubs and representatives, for their enthusiasm, professionalism and passion.
Conclusion
Dog Lovers Sydney 2025 was more than just an event, it was a celebration of our shared love for dogs and the many ways they enrich our lives. The weekend provided an outstanding platform for DOGS NSW to connect with the public, highlight the value of registered breeders, and promote the fun and rewarding sporting activities available through our clubs.
With such strong participation, high public interest, and an incredible team effort, this year’s festival stands out as one of our most successful community engagement initiatives to date.

Dachshund
History / Country of Origin - Germany
Short legged, long bodied hounds of Dachshund type were recorded in carvings in Egyptian monuments as far back as the 15th century BC, and there is evidence that the English, as well as the Germans and Italians, had a similar hunting breed back in the 15th and 16th centuries. The breed was standardised in Germany where the dogs were used to enter badger dens, an exercise which required short, powerful legs and a long body. Hunting per se is now frowned upon, but Dachshunds still retain the instinct and excel in Earthdog.
Most of the early dogs were bred with extremely crooked forelegs amounting, by present day standards, almost to a deformity. A German book on hunting published in 1719, however, does contain pictures of two dogs which very much resemble modern day Dachshunds and in 1879 the first German Stud Book was formulated listing the dogs and their breeders. Our show dogs today trace directly back to these. By the end of the 19th century the Germans were holding dog shows and hunting matches and Dachshunds were being developed in a greatly improved form. The Standard Dachshund back then was much smaller than the Standard size found in non continental countries today and continues to be preferred, even to this day.
The Dachshund Miniature and Dachshund Rabbit were bred to specialise in hunting small prey, like rabbits. In fact, the name “Kaninchen” is literally the German word for rabbit, and the breed is often referred to in English as the “Rabbit Dachshund.”
The Dachshund, also called Dackel or Teckel, has been known since the Middle Ages. From the Bracken, dogs especially suitable for hunting below ground were consistently bred. From these shortlegged dogs, the Dachshund evolved and is recognised as one of the most versatile hunting breeds. He also shows excellent performance above ground, hunting while giving tongue, flushing and tracking wounded game. The oldest Club devoted to the breeding of Dachshunds is the “Deutsche Teckelklub” e.V., founded in 1888.
For decades the Dachshund has been bred in three different sizes (Teckel, Miniature Teckel and Rabbit Teckel) and in three different coat varieties (Smooth-haired, Wire-haired and Long-haired), resulting in nine varieties.

Country of Development
Dachshunds came to England around 1860, and prizes were first awarded at the Crystal Palace Dog Show in 1875. Both Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales were keen Dachshund fanciers and this Royal patronage helped the breed tremendously. In 1877 the Kennel Club in England divided the Dachshund exhibited into groups, according to weight, and in 1878, another innovation occurred, division by colour. The breed was given its first real organisation when The Dachshund Club was formed and aided by Royal favour, the Dachshund had really arrived.
Miniature Dachshunds were introduced into England from Germany in 1938 and the Miniature Dachshund Club of England was formed in 1935. Early importations were in many cases unattractive; popeyed, short in ear and lacking in bone, but with the judicious use of small standards English breeders evolved the miniatures of today.
Characteristics
Intelligent, lively, courageous to the point of rashness, obedient. Especially suited to going to ground because of low build, very strong forequarters and forelegs. Long, strong jaw, and immense power of bite and hold. Excellent nose, persevering hunter and tracker. Essential that functional build is retained to ensure working ability. 1.
Appearance
The breed is described as moderately long and low; compact with a well-muscled body; bold, defiant carriage of head and intelligent expression. In 2008 the Breed Standard to define the expected ratio of length to height, making it clear that adequate ground clearance is required to ensure dogs are fit for function.
The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (World Canine Federation) differentiates between the Dachshund Miniature and Dachshund Rabbit based on two measurements taken when the dogs are 15 months old: chest width and weight.
According to the FCI standard, a Dachshund Miniature can weigh up to 4.5 kgs and have a chest measurement of between 30 and 35 cm. The male Dachshund Rabbit can weigh up to 3.5 kg and the female 3 kg. Rabbit varieties must have a chest measurement of 30 cm or less.
Standards ideal weight is 9-12kgs.1.
Coat Types
Smooth-Haired - Dense, short and smooth. Hair on underside of tail coarse in texture. Skin loose and supple, but fitting losely all over without dewlap and little or no wrinkle.
Long-Haired - Soft and straight, or only slightly waved; longest under neck, on underparts of body and behind legs, where it forms abundant feathering, on tail where it forms a flag. Outside of ears well feathered. Coat flat, and not obscuring outline. Too much hair on feet undesirable.
Wire-Haired - With exception of jaw, eyebrows, chin and ears, the whole body should be covered with a short, straight, harsh coat with dense undercoat, beard on chin, eyebrows bushy, but hair on ears almost smooth. Legs and feet well but neatly furnished with harsh coat. 2.

Temperament
Friendly by nature, neither fearful nor aggressive, with even temperament. Passionate, persistent and fast hunting dog with an excellent nose.
Health Issues
The breed generally suffers few health problems providing they are kept well exercised and fed a healthy, balanced diet. DNA testing for cord1 PRA has helped ensure there are very few cases of blindness from this genetic mutation. On average, they live to 12 years old and it is not unusual for them to live well beyond 15 years.
As a dwarf breed, they have an increased risk of back problems (IVDD). Research by the RVC in 2013 suggested that exaggerated length and lack of height also contributed to an increased risk of IVDD.
We recommend that puppy buyers ask about any history of back problems and avoid buying puppies from parents with exaggerated length of body or excessively short legs. Lafora’s Disease has been identified in Miniature Wires and a DNA test developed. Breeders have responded and almost all Miniature Wires have been tested.
Suitability
Dachshunds aren’t built for distance running, leaping or strenuous swimming, but otherwise these tireless hounds are game for anything. Smart and vigilant, with a big-dog bark, they make fine watchdogs. Bred to be an independent hunter of dangerous prey, they can be brave to the point of rashness, and a bit stubborn, but their endearing nature and unique look has won millions of hearts the world over. 3.

Field Spaniel Club of NSW Inaugural Scent Work Trial ~ 17 August 2025
170 entries, 99 dogs, and one perfect sunny day combined to create an unforgettable milestone for canine sport in NSW.
The Field Spaniel Club of NSW's inaugural Scent Work Trial exceeded all expectations, establishing a new benchmark for inclusive canine events in the state.
With 170 entries representing 99 enthusiastic dogs and their handlers, the trial's "Open to All Breeds" format proved to be a masterstroke. From noble Field Spaniels to determined Hungarian Vizslas, the diversity of participants demonstrated that scent work truly celebrates the one thing all dogs share; their incredible abilities.
Judges Christine Stani and Tracie Donnelly, both respected NSW Scent Work Judges, managed Advanced and Novice levels across Containers and Interiors with precision and warmth.
The progression from simple birch detection in Novice classes to the more complex birch and clove combinations in the Advanced levels showcased the sport's natural learning pathway, inspiring newcomers, while challenging experienced dogs.
What truly set this inaugural trial apart was its celebration of community. The bake stand became an unexpected star of the day, with Portuguese tarts disappearing almost as quickly as they appeared, while sea salt brownies, lamingtons, and delicate madeleines created their own fans. The club's BBQ proved equally popular, with the sizzle of sausages and the convivial atmosphere raising funds while bringing competitors together during breaks.
Nature seemed determined to bless this milestone event, delivering clear skies and perfect temperatures that kept both two-legged and four-legged participants comfortable throughout the day. The sunshine highlighted the natural beauty of the Hawkesbury venue while creating ideal scenting conditions - no wind interference, stable temperatures, and an excellent setup for judges.
The success of this inaugural trial sends a powerful message about the future of canine sport in NSW. By creating an inclusive, well-organised, and genuinely enjoyable event, the Field Spaniel Club of NSW has exhibitors saying they will be back again next year.
“The Field Spaniel Club of NSW promises to build on this remarkable foundation and we look forward to bringing more events to the DOGS NSW community whilst promoting Field Spaniels.”
~ Kath Purkis, President at Field Spaniel Club of NSW
The sight of handlers celebrating their dogs' achievements; whether earning their first qualifying score or adding another title to an impressive resume, reminded everyone present why we participate in these sports. It's not just about ribbons and sashes (though the quality prizes were certainly appreciated), but about the journey of partnership and discovery that scent work uniquely provides.
“Huge congratulations to the Field Spaniel Club of NSW for a lovely run trial. A small club doing big things.” ~ Beatriz Insausti
“In the best possible way this was what I would call an “old school” trial. Fabulous club and club members, every detail covered to make sure we had the best day. Right down to the Field Spaniel bunting.” ~ Penny Mead.
“It was a fantastic day, everyone was lovely and we were lucky enough to come away with a title. Thank you so much, we will be back.” ~ Shana Lennox
“Bonnie & I thoroughly enjoyed the day! Thank you so much for all the hard work you guys put in.” ~ Caitling Oliver
“It was a lovely trial, great venue, great food, great company & great searches. Thanks to everyone involved no matter how big or small.” ~ Linda Anslow
“It was a great day! So impressed with how smoothly everything went. What a great achievement for a new club. Thanks to judges, stewards and volunteers!” ~ Helen Voyce
As competitors packed up their gear and headed home with happy dogs, many were already asking about next year's event. The inaugural trial's success has clearly established scent work as a viable and popular addition to NSW's canine sport calendar.
For the 99 dogs, and the handlers who supported them every step of the way, this was more than a trial; it was a celebration of what makes the human-canine partnership so extraordinary.
The Field Spaniel Club of NSW has proven that with vision, organisation, and genuine passion for canine welfare, a single club can create something truly special. The inaugural scent work trial wasn't just an event - it was the beginning of a new offering for the club and its members.

The Rich Tradition & Progressive Vision of Herding in New South Wales
Words: Kate Davidson ~ Images: Linda Leman-Wildframe Photography
In New South Wales (NSW) herding is not just a competition—it’s a heritage. The Dogs Australia Herding Program, implemented by DOGS NSW, in liaison with national leadership, offers a structured pathway for purebred working breeds to retain their natural instincts, showcase their skills, and ensure high standards of welfare and governance.
Origins and Purpose: Safeguarding Herding Instinct
The Herding Program was introduced to preserve the working instinct in dogs bred for stock-handling, ensuring breeders could assess and maintain that drive through structured testing. It follows a progression from the Instinct Test, through Herding Test, to Pre-Trial, then onto trial courses A, B, and C - with a Course D in development to simulate farm-style tasks such as moving stock between yards and paddocks.
These tests are rooted in the Rules and Regulations of Herding, first formalised by Dogs Australia in 2001, mandating standardised evaluation and course designs across states to preserve breed heritage and working ability.
Breed Eligibility: Who Can Take Part?
Eligibility includes dogs in Group 5 (Working Dogs) and several other recognised herding breeds like Giant and Standard Schnauzers, Keeshonds, Rottweilers, Samoyeds, Kerry Blue and Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, plus mixed-heritage dogs on the Associate Register with clear herding ancestry. Dogs Australia also maintains procedures for recognising additional breeds under the Herding category as needed.
Governance—From State Committees to National Oversight
In NSW, the Herding Discipline is overseen by a dedicated Herding Working Party (HWP) and represented by a Dogs Australia State Herding Rep in national discussions. Rule changes and updates are vetted via this structure: proposals are reviewed by the HWP, discussed among participants, then adopted through Dogs Australia for nationwide consistency. Ann Moy, a DOGS NSW Board Member and a veteran Judge, notes she has judged in Queensland, Tasmania, NSW and South Australia, finding consistent standards throughout.
Animal Welfare: Mandatory Standards and Codes
Herding trials must comply with strict welfare requirements under both Dogs Australia Rules and NSW law. State-based legislation, such as the NSW Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 and related regulations, imposes a duty of care on stock and dog handlers - always mandating humane treatment and welfare provisions.
At the industry level, the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines provide a framework for livestock welfare, now endorsed across states and shaping legislative practice on transport, handling, hydration, and humane treatment of animals used in trials. Consistent access to fresh water, prohibition of dog-inflicted harm, and human oversight over livestock handling are enforced in all trials under the Herding Working Party’s guidance.
Venues, Expansion & Future Growth
Activities across NSW span coastal and western regions, with venues provided by two Sydney-area clubs and expanding regional trial sites. A key supporter of the sport, DOGS NSW provides access to dedicated herding grounds at the Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affairs in Orchard Hills, where herding trials and training days are regularly held. The venue features suitable livestock and infrastructure aligned with Herding Program standards, making it a vital hub for Sydney-based handlers and events.
HERDING
The broader program continues to seek regional properties where livestock are accustomed to dogs and varied working styles - ensuring uniform, safe, and suitable conditions for both stock and handlers (e.g., in the Western Region). This strategic focus on venue access is central to the sport’s future growth and participation across the state.
• Expanding venue access across NSW, especially in livestock-scarce areas
• Increasing judge numbers via training and mentoring
• Boosting public and club awareness of herding discipline within breed communities
A Well-Governed Tradition with Ethical Foundations
The NSW Herding Program combines the legacy of traditional working breeds with the expectations of modern ethical governance. Its layered regulatory framework ensures:
• Consistent regulations across all Australian states through Dogs Australia
• Rigorously trained judges to maintain competitive and welfare standards
• Compliance with state-level animal welfare legislation and national guidelines
Through the efforts of DOGS NSW, the Herding Working Party and Dogs Australia, herding remains accessible, fair, safe and true to its roots.
Challenges in Judge Availability - How NSW Is Responding
One persistent challenge in NSW (and nationally) is ensuring enough qualified herding judges to meet growing demand for tests and trials. The pathway to becoming a judge is rigorous: candidates must have trained and titled a dog through Instinct, Herding Test, and Pre-Trial levels, served as scribe and stock handler in multiple events (typically three of each), and successfully complete both written and practical assessments under the Dogs Australia Judges Training and Assessment Program. These stringent requirements, while essential for maintaining high standards, naturally limit the speed at which new judges are accredited.
In NSW, DOGS NSW and the Herding Working Party are actively addressing this shortage through initiatives such as:
Launching judge intake campaigns: NSW recently received two strong applications for next year’s training scheme, potentially increasing the pool of judges in NSW.
Providing locally accessible training: Established training schemes under DOGS NSW support candidates through lectures, practical sessions, and mentoring delivered in venues and via Zoom.
Mentoring partnerships: Aspiring judges are teamed with experienced judges in live events and trials to gain required practical experience and feedback.
Together, these steps aim to bolster judge numbers, enhance consistency in trial delivery, and ensure the Herding Program remains well-supported into the future.
Ann Moy confirms the challenge but also highlights NSW’s relative strength: “Herding Judges are an issue in both NSW and other states. NSW is probably in a better position than many other states, as we have two applications for next year’s Training Scheme,” she says. “Stock handlers are generally an easier task as most people love to work their dogs on stock anywhere and anytime.”
With continued encouragement from DOGS NSW and structured mentoring, the state is building a sustainable base of judges to ensure ongoing trial opportunities for working dogs and their handlers.
Final Thoughts
For breeders ensuring instinct remains alive, handlers looking to engage their dogs meaningfully, or newcomers drawn to working dog heritage, the important takeaway is clear: Herding in NSW is grounded in tradition, guided by comprehensive governance, and sustained by an unwavering commitment to breed integrity and animal welfare. Over the coming years, with new courses and expanded venues, it promises richer opportunity and ongoing growth.
NSW handler Jess Kimpton and Border Collie 'Stitch' to represent Australia at International Sheepdog Trial
New South Wales sheepdog handler Jess Kimpton and her seven-year-old Border Collie NEWCOMEN STITCH is one of just four dog-and-handler teams chosen to represent Australia at the 2025 Trans-Tasman Sheepdog Test in New Zealand on 31 October to 1 Nov 2025, competing for the prestigious Wayleggo Cup.
The prestigious international event pits the best handlers and dogs from Australia against those from New Zealand on a hybrid course that blends both countries’ rules. Teams must guide three sheep through four obstacles.
“I’m so excited to be representing Australia,” Jess exclaimed. “There’s always a strong rivalry with New Zealand, but it’s built on good sportsmanship. We’re out there to win for our country and that’s pretty special.”
The 32-year-old from East Kurrajong earned her spot after standout results at the NSW Selection Trial in Bungendore, where many competitors ran multiple dogs, but Stitch was her only eligible entry.
Finishing in the top three secured Jess’ place on the NSW team, which went on to compete at the Ted Gaby Interstate Challenge, held at the Supreme Australian Sheepdog Championships in Northam, WA.
There, the NSW team placed second, and Jess and Stitch led the way with the highest overall score for the team. Their result ranked them in the nation’s top four, earning one of just four coveted positions on the Australian team!
Breaking barriers in a male-dominated sport
Sheepdog trialing has been part of Australia’s heritage for more than 150 years, with the first recorded trials held in Forbes, NSW in 1870 1.. Today, the sport remains male-dominated. Jess is only the third woman ever to qualify for the Australian Trans-Tasman team and just the second from NSW.
“These days you’re just another competitor,” said Jess. “The women in the sport cheer each other on, and we’re proving we’re not just making up the numbers - we’re competitive!”
Jess grew up on Sydney’s Northern Beaches in a dog-sport family. At age four she ran her first agility course with her mum’s dog, and later famously trained two chickens to weave poles and run tunnels to prove she was ready for a dog of her own. In her teens, a mentor introduced her to sheepdog work, and she’s been hooked ever since.
Below: Jess with 'Stitch'. Above: 'Stitch' in action.
Right: 'Stitch' with his NSW State Title trophy & ribbon
Jess has been trialing in three-sheep working dog trials for around 15 years and has been training sheepdogs and their handlers for more than 12 years, alongside preparing her own dogs for national competition. All of her competition dogs are trained and mostly bred under the “Quickstep” prefix, which Jess shares with her mum, who also breeds reining-bred Quarter Horses.
The Heart of Jess' Success
Drawing on nearly 20 years of experience across multiple breeds and canine sports, Jess credits her success in sheepdog trials to the unwavering support of her family, the partnership she shares with Stitch, and her philosophy of guiding dogs to use their natural instinct with confidence and empathy.
“Stitch is more than a ‘trial dog’; she’s my partner,” she said. “When we’re in sync it’s magic. She’ll even ‘tell me’ when I’m wrong. It’s a true partnership – almost like we can read each other’s minds.”
When it comes to training sheepdogs, Jess explained, “I reward what’s right, calmly block what isn’t, and let the dog learn to make good choices. Confidence is everything in the dog and in the handler. You can’t push sheep around a course; you guide them.”
Jess’ achievements span more than Border Collies. She earned Australia’s highest herding titles with a Samoyed and Shetland Sheepdog on sheep, ducks and cattle, and her Shetland Sheepdog, 'Fox', is the only of the breed to attain his Herding Champion title. Beyond dogs, she has also competed in equestrian events with reining horses.
Jess has additionally trained animals for film and television, including working with Sam Neill on 'Rams', and more recently on 'The Fall Guy' and 'Colin from Accounts.'
Balancing Motherhood & Sheepdog Trialling
Today, Jess balances motherhood, sheepdog trialing and life on her Hawkesbury Valley acreage, where she and her husband Morgan (a breeder of Kennel Club Border Collies from European working lines) are raising their young daughter Evie along with sheep, horses, chickens, a cat and a team of six Border Collies aged from eight months to 15 years.
“I’m so lucky to have the support I do to keep doing what I love – working sheep – even as a mum,” said Jess. “When Evie was younger, I thought the dream of competing might be over. But I proved myself wrong; you can be a mum and keep chasing your dreams.”
Good luck to Jess and Stitch to retain the Wayleggo Cup at the Trans-Tasman Sheepdog Test in New Zealand!

VetChat launches Australia’s first Veterinary Telehealth Industry Report
A nation-wide shortage of veterinarians, combined with cost-of-living pressures and high pet ownership, with nearly 70% of households owning pets, has pushed the system to the limit, leaving it functional only in well-resourced regions (mostly metropolitan areas).
The result is that animals often face delays in treatment, or miss out on care altogether, while veterinarians are overworked to exhaustion. Telehealth offers a practical and scalable solution to bridge these gaps.
While not a replacement for in-clinic care, Veterinary telehealth provides immediate access to professional veterinary guidance - helping carers understand what action is needed, and how urgent it is. By reducing unnecessary emergency visits and providing timely reassurance, telehealth eases pressure on an already overburdened workforce. With thoughtful reform, in line with technological advancements and community expectation, veterinary telehealth can do more. This will further improve outcomes for animals, support the wellbeing of veterinary teams, and help create a more sustainable system of care.
As Australia’s largest veterinary telehealth provider, VetChat is proud to play a vital role in shaping the future of pet healthcare. We take this responsibility seriously and are committed to working in partnership with veterinarians, clinics, government and other stakeholders to build a safe, sustainable and accessible veterinary profession. Our vision is a future where every Australian, regardless of their circumstances or location, has fair and reliable access to veterinary care.
On 23 September 2025, VetChat, Australia’s leading provider of veterinary telehealth services, released the first comprehensive Veterinary Telehealth in Australia 2025 report, marking a major milestone for the profession and the future of accessible pet care.
The report provides data on how Australians and veterinarians are engaging with telehealth, and highlights the role it plays in addressing the nation’s veterinary workforce shortages, cost of living pressures and access challenges.
Key findings include:
• 1 in 6 Australians skipped a vet visit in the past year due to affordability concerns or access barriers such as regional location.
• Only 20% of Australians know vet telehealth exists, but 81% would use it once aware.
• 53% of online consultations happen after hours (6pm–9am), when clinics are closed.
• 80% of vets working in telehealth also continue to work in-clinic, underlining that telehealth complements traditional practice.
• 75% of vets in telehealth report a positive or substantially positive impact on their mental health, citing flexibility and sustainability as key drivers.
Dr Claire Jenkins, CEO and Founder of VetChat , said the report underscores how telehealth supports, not replaces, the veterinary profession: “Telehealth is not a substitute for in-clinic care. It’s a tool that complements the work of veterinarians, reduces pressure on emergency clinics, and ensures more pets get timely care. By filling critical gaps after-hours, in regional areas, and for carers facing cost-of-living pressures, telehealth improves access while helping make the profession more sustainable.”
VetChat works with clinics across Australia to provide after-hours triage support. With over 40 Australian-registered vets on its team, VetChat is uniquely positioned to demonstrate how telehealth can relieve pressure on stretched practices while creating new opportunities for veterinarians to work flexibly and sustainably.
The report also calls attention to the outdated regulatory framework in Australia, with most state guidelines drafted over five years ago and failing to recognise the safe use of online Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationships (VCPR). This gap leaves many pets without care options, despite the model being widely adopted in countries such as the UK, US, and Canada.
Veterinary Telehealth in Australia 2025 is designed to provide policymakers, industry leaders and practitioners with a clear evidence base to inform future regulation and adoption.

Access to 24/7 emergency vet care is concentrated in capital cities, and on the east coast
Open 24/7 Veterinary Emergency hospitals
Open restricted hours emergency care
24/7 Veterinary emergency hospitals are concentrated in cities, largely leaving regional and rural communities to depend on local vets answering phones through the night, on top of their full daytime hours.
With the current shortage, there are fewer vets to share this after-hours burden. Many clinics are already at full capacity, leaving them unable to take on new clients.
As a result, pets can be left without care after hoursor even over an entire weekend - unless their owners can travel long distances to an emergency hub.

NOTICE TO ADVERTISERS
The Competition and Consumer Act came into force
on 19 April 2011. Certain provisions of the Act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the Act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the Act are strictly complied with. Advertisers are warned that it is their responsibility to be able to substantiate any statements or claims made in advertisements. In cases of doubt, advertisers are asked to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.
DISPUTES
From time to time, members refer to DOGS NSW matters in which it is not appropriate for our organisation to become involved. For example, disputes between members in relation to the sale of dogs. These are usually private matters to be determined by the contractual agreements between parties. Disputes on such matters should be resolved by the courts and not by DOGS NSW.
Members are requested to refrain from referring such matters to DOGS NSW. They are issues of a private or domestic nature and should properly be resolved by the courts or the Department of Fair Trading.
