An unexpected journey
By Alberto Friscione
Cancun International Airport was nearly empty at seven in the evening. I, however, was full of excitement, as I was about to dive into the Mediterranean thanks to an invitation from our boss, Adrián.
We arrived in Madrid just in time for lunch, which we enjoyed restaurant together with Harris ,Adrián and his wife. That same day, we flew to Menorca, where the incredible sailboat Aventuras awaited us, captained by Tony.
At dawn, a rubber dinghy came to take us diving. As soon as we reached the site, we put on our gear, including 5-millimeter wetsuits. The water was cool and crystal clear in the early hours; on the seabed, enormous rocks rose like medieval castles, while seagrass swayed with the tide.

I searched for fish of regular size, but none appeared. Even so, we went on two more dives. A bit disappointed, we decided to move on to Mallorca. There, we visited a breathtaking cave where rays of light created a magical curtain at the exit. It was in this underwater cathedral that we spotted colorful nudibranchs—delicate shell-less sea slugs—and a shy octopus resting in its den. Eager to see more, we headed to Cabrera, a protected area.
Here, groupers revealed themselves to be surprisingly friendly, swimming fearlessly around us.
After these dives, I reaffirmed my commitment to caring for and protecting our oceans, so they do not end up like the Mediterranean: beautiful, yes, but depleted of marine life.
