“With a pot by my bed and a mini tube in my bag, TGB’s Better Balm™ has become my multipurpose saviour. I slather it on dry skin patches, chapped lips and cuticles, and even use it to tame stray hairs on a sleek ponytail.”
“I love Dermalogica’s Phyto Nature Oxygen Cream. Applied in the morning, it immediately brightens my complexion. At this time of year, I need products that I can rely on to help my skin look fresher and less tired!”
Dear Readers,
As another year comes to a close, it’s natural to pause and reflect, not just on what we’ve achieved but on where we’re heading. The beauty and hair industry is evolving at lightning speed. New treatments are emerging, consumer trends are shifting and technology is opening doors we never thought possible.
That’s why the British Beauty Council’s Industry Hub, part of the sixth annual British Beauty Week, couldn’t have come at a better moment. This year’s theme, Future of Beauty, was a celebration of everything that makes our industry so powerful: creativity, innovation and the ability to shape how people feel about themselves.
Through a series of panel discussions and demonstrations, we heard from trend forecasters, brand founders, dermatologists and experts who painted a picture not just of the next year, but of the next decade.
Unsurprisingly, AI was a hot topic, showing us how it can help businesses run smarter and how tools like 3D avatars and AR mirrors enable clients to experiment endlessly with hair and makeup looks.
But here’s the thing: while technology is dazzling, the heart of beauty will always be you. AI might design and apply gel polish nail art in seconds or deliver personalised haircare advice through an app, but it can’t replace the warmth of a stylist’s smile, the reassurance of a one-to-one conversation or the magic of human touch.
As Spa Manager Lisa Can explains in her article on our website, the introduction of VR headsets into her treatments, combined with the power of touch, lowers cortisol levels and improves breathing patterns, ultimately heightening the spa and wellness experience.
So, should we fear the future? Absolutely not. The future of beauty and hair isn’t about replacing professionals; it’s about empowering them. As products and treatments evolve, so will our skills which means even richer, more meaningful experiences for every client who walks through your door.
The future is bright and it’s ours to shape.
Best wishes,
Melissa Dennis, Editor

Megan, the person behind ABT’s Live Chat service, answers your most common insurance and membership questions.
Does
my ABT insurance policy cover me to treat children?
Your ABT policy covers you to deliver non-invasive treatments to minors, in this case those under the age of 16 years, if you adhere to specific requirements. These requirements safeguard both you as the practitioner and your client.
To meet the policy requirements, you must:
1. Obtain written parental or guardian consent clearly stating that the parent or guardian has been informed about the treatment and agrees to it being carried out on the minor. This must be kept with the Client Record Card.
2. Maintain and retain this Client Record Card and written consent for at least seven years after the client becomes an adult.
3. Strictly follow the product manufacturer’s age guidelines and training protocols. If the product or treatment you are offering has a specified minimum age limit, this must be observed without exception. The treatment must be performed exactly as you were trained, following best practices and professional standards to minimise any risks.
Where no age limit is provided by a product manufacturer, use your professional judgement to decide if the treatment is suitable. Consider factors such as the client’s maturity, skin sensitivity and any potential health concerns. Always communicate clearly with both the client and their parent or guardian about what the treatment involves, possible risks and aftercare requirements.
In addition, when piercing under 16’s, in addition to obtaining the written consent, the parent / guardian also needs to be present.
Following these guidelines ensures not only compliance with insurance and regulatory requirements but also prioritises the safety and wellbeing of your younger clients.

By taking care of your body and posture, you’re not only investing in your own wellbeing but also in the longevity of your career, explains Heather Hughes.
B Why self-care is‘career care’
Beauty careers are deeply rewarding, but they also place unique physical demands on the body. Hours spent bending over clients, reaching for tools, or clenching the jaw in moments of concentration, for example, slowly build stress and tension, often without realising it.
Over time the nervous system adapts to these ‘work postures’ and makes them feel normal. The nervous system always looks for efficiency and it assumes this is how you want to move, so it begins locking in these abnormal postures to make them your default.
Take leaning over clients, for example. What starts as a slight forward head tilt with rounded shoulders and a collapsed chest can, with repetition, settle into your everyday posture. And the posture gets even stronger if you spend time after work in similar positions, such as using a smart phone or sitting at a computer. Now, visualise the effects over 10 years into your career and beyond. Did you picture yourself slumped over even when standing?
Regularly abnormal postures increase the resting state of tension in your body over time. This leads to muscle imbalances, pain and even reduced mobility. If left unchecked, this can go beyond physical discomfort and it can shorten career longevity. It’s not uncommon to know someone who has left their job in the beauty services industry due to chronic pain or injury. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be this way. With awareness and a few daily habits, you can rebalance your body and protect your career. Small, consistent actions make the biggest difference.
Here are a few simple strategies you can implement now.
Move intentionally for 15–20 minutes a day. Choose practices that undo work postures and calm the nervous system like Somatic Movement, yoga, tai chi, or any slow, mindful exercise you enjoy. If you like it, you’ll stick with it.
Optimise your workspace Understand ergonomics principles, how they apply to your job and how to implement positive changes. For example, keep tools, products and lamps within easy reach to avoid bending or twisting. Make sure trolleys, chairs and beds move smoothly. Sometimes a simple wheel replacement or change in flooring makes all the difference.
“Your body is worth caring for as much as you care for your clients.”
Reset between every client. Just one minute helps. Jump lightly, circle your arms, twist side to side, and open and close your hands to release tension. Get blood flowing.
Think of self-care as ‘career care.’ It’s easy to dismiss self-care as optional when appointments are back-to-back and clients come first, but your body is your most important tool. You can’t deliver quality
work to your clients if your body is not optimally functioning. By taking care of your body and posture each day, you’re not only investing in your own wellbeing but also in the longevity of your career.
By understanding the role of tension and by counteracting it daily, you can protect both body and career. You and your body are worth caring for as much as you care for your clients.

Wexosomes Understanding
Discover the cell micro-messengers that can help trigger long-term skin repair and restrict hair loss.
With rapid advancements in skin care, consumers quickly pick up on scientific terminology that may be new to us and which become ‘buzz’ words when searching out effective treatments in salons and clinics. One such term is exosome.
Exosomes are now being incorporated into advanced skin care formulations promising to increase collagen and elastin, reduce inflammation and support skin barrier repair.
“Exosomes have quickly become one of the most exciting breakthroughs in advanced skincare,” explains Gustavo Cardona Chorro of Skn Care Ltd (skn-care.com), distributor of the Casmara range.
“These microscopic messengers, naturally released by cells, transport proteins, peptides and growth factors that trigger regeneration and repair.
“Their ability to penetrate skin deeply, thanks to their ultra-small size, allows them to deliver powerful rejuvenating signals where they are needed most, helping to restore collagen, strengthen the skin barrier and promote cellular vitality.”
“Exosomes are like your skin’s personal courier service, delivering the right ingredients to reboot sluggish cells, support healing and enhance function. They don’t just treat symptoms, they encourage your skin to do better, from the inside out,” adds skincare and laser specialist Debbie Thomas, founder of the D. Thomas Clinic (dthomas.com).
“Think of exosomes as micro-messengers: tiny parcels carrying proteins, peptides, lipids and nucleic acids (e.g., microRNA),” advises Dr Heather Muir, Founder of Skin Sculpt Skincare (skinsculptskincare. com). “Exosomes are naturally secreted by cells and when they fuse with a recipient “skin cell” they can modulate cell behaviour without introducing whole new cells. Essentially exosomes influence the cells you already have to behave more youthfully or become more efficient.”
Debbie Thomas adds:
“We’re in the age of regenerative aesthetics (longevity, bio-hacking, looking great but natural) and exosomes are ticking all the boxes. Consumers and professionals alike are moving away from “quick fixes” and instead investing in real, health promoting, long term change. Exosomes support that.
“They sit at the intersection of biotech, beauty and results, offering high-performance skin regeneration without aggressiveness or downtime.”
“As [clients] increasingly seek treatments that are both natural and highly effective, exosomes offer a science-backed solution with impressive clinical outcomes and minimal downtime,” says Dr Priya Verma (drpriyaverma.com), who delivers aesthetic treatments in her Harley Street clinic.
Combine with energy-based tools
Formulations featuring exosomes, which may be bovine or plant-derived, are commonly applied topically as part of treatments such as microneedling, as Dr Ed Robinson of Dr Ed Robinson Aesthetics (dredrobinson.co.uk), notes:
“In-clinic procedures like microneedling or other assisted delivery methods are more effective in helping exosomes and growth factors penetrate deeper layers of the skin or scalp where they are able to have a greater effect. Exosomes work best in combination with energy-based devices, enhancing results and minimising downtime.”
“After treatments like microneedling, radiofrequency or fractional lasers, the skin is temporarily more permeable,” explains Debbie Thomas. “This creates the perfect window where actives, especially ones as intelligent as exosomes, can penetrate deeper allowing them to work harder.
“Using exosomes posttreatment enhances healing, speeding up recovery and supercharging your results. It’s like giving your skin a personalised regeneration blueprint after it’s been primed to respond.”
Quality control
For prevention & treatment
The effective use of exosome products is likely to span your facial clientele, as advanced facialist and holistic aesthetician Abi Oleck (beauskinlondon.co.uk) outlines:
“My clients in their late 30s to mid-50s have seen the dramatic benefits, where fine lines, dullness and loss of firmness are more evident, but I also introduce exosomes earlier for preventative care, especially for younger clients exposed to a lot of environmental stress.”
“Generally, exosomes are well-tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin,” adds Debbie Thomas. “Because they’re cell-derived, they’re bio-compatible and don’t typically trigger irritation or breakouts. In fact, they can help strengthen a compromised barrier and calm down inflamed or reactive skin.”
“Exosomes have quickly become one of the most exciting breakthroughs in advanced skincare” - Gustavo Cardona Chorro
As with all components of skin care formulations, not all ingredients are equal and the quality of exosomes and their source are vital to their effectiveness.
“How exosomes/growth factors are purified (removal of unwanted material), how many there are and how they are formulated matters. These affect safety, consistency and biological activity,” says Dr Ed Robinson.
He adds: “The source of exosomes is critical. (For example), Purasomes use bovine colostrum, a particularly rich natural source of exosomes and growth factors. The timing of harvesting, ethical sourcing and an organic certified farm are all part of their quality control.”
“In skincare and haircare, [exosomes] can promote collagen production, reduce inflammation, support new blood vessel formation, improve repair signs of ageing and even increase hair follicular activity,” comments Dr Ed Robinson.
Dr Priya Verma continues:
“Exosome treatments can improve skin texture, tone and elasticity. They enhance collagen and elastin production, repair UV-induced damage, reduce inflammation, accelerate healing and even target pigmentation and redness. Over time, [clients] notice firmer, smoother and more radiant skin. Some studies also suggest exosomes can help slow the skin’s ageing process by promoting cellular repair and longevity.
“Exosomes can be particularly effective for treating fine lines, acne scars, pigmentation, sun damage and skin that is dull or dehydrated. Because of their anti-inflammatory properties, exosomes are also helpful for calming sensitive or compromised skin seen in inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.”
Exosome efficacy
Whilst there is anecdotal testimony of the effectiveness of exosomes in skin care, can professionals have confidence that the efficacy of these cell messengers has been scientifically tested?
“At present exosomes are fairly new in the world of aesthetics and skincare. There is evidence for the decrease in inflammation, increased collagen and elastin production and improved skin cell turnover. However, there are skin penetration and delivery challenges with these tiny messengers,” explains Dr Heather Muir.
“This is because the skin barrier (stratum corneum) limits their penetration. After all it is there to keep the inside in and the outside out!
How much material actually gets to the target cells is not fully established for all topical formats and human evidence is limited at present.
“There is evidence showing enhanced clinical outcomes post procedure in reducing redness and downtime and this looks to be one of the most promising uses for exosomes at the moment.”
“Topical over the counter creams or serums may contain exosomes or similar vesicles, but often in lower concentration, with uncertain purity and without the delivery mechanism needed to get them through the skin barrier in sufficient amounts,” suggests Dr Ed Robinson. “The results tend to be more modest, gradual and may primarily affect more superficial layers.”
Dr Muir concludes: “From my scientific standpoint, stronger evidence is needed with long term meta-analysis studies and in particular comparison studies are needed to compare their effectiveness with retinoids etc. More studies are needed that are independent and not manufacturer sponsored as this can produce bias. However good quality exosomes have been shown to be safe and are very promising.”
Take a look at this selection of exosome formulated skin care and how you could build these into your treatment menu:
Casmara’s Águeda’s Secret Golden Age collection harnesses botanical exosomes derived from centella asiatica, known as the ‘longevity plant’. These activate gene expression patterns linked to hydration, barrier reinforcement and skin longevity.
Created for home use, products include Intense Serum with hyaluronic acid, Intense Cream with argireline® and a pro- and prebiotic complex, plus Intense Ampoules, anti-ageing boosters with amino acids, vitamin B12 and Japanese cedar stem cells.
Clinical evaluations show that in 28 days,
“Over the last few years, I’ve been integrating exosome-based skincare into my holistic and aesthetic practice in Belgravia, London. I am particularly impressed by SkyMedic’s formulations and I believe they’re a game changer when used properly,” says Advanced Facialist & Holistic Aesthetician, Abi Oleck (beauskinlondon.co.uk).
“In my treatment protocols, I often combine SkyMedic exosome microneedling with a gentle resurfacing treatment. The micro-channels allow deeper penetration, so you get more efficient regeneration. I also use exosomes in more gentle maintenance facials, paired with lymphatic drainage or sculpting massage, to help depuff, stimulate circulation and give that glowing appearance to the skin.”

“Exosomes influence cells to behave more youthfully or become more efficient.”

Your end-of-year
Social Media Audit
Social media expert Alicia Humphreys outlines how to review your online marketing and get ahead for January.
LLet’s be honest, December can feel like a blur of glitter, gift cards and “I’ll sort that in the new year” energy. But before you switch off the out-ofoffice and roll into 2026, take a hot minute to give your social media a quick once-over.
Why? Because a little reflection now equals a lot more clarity in January. Here’s your no-fluff, easy-to-follow guide to reviewing your socials and setting yourself up for success in the new year.
Step #1: Review what worked (and what flopped)
Go back through your content and check your analytics. Here’s what to look for:
• Top-performing posts
• What got the most likes, comments, saves or shares? Reels? Carousels? Personal stories? This is the content your audience wants more of.
• Underperforming posts.
• What fell flat? What took you ages but didn’t really land? This helps you work smarter, not harder next year.
• Follower growth & engagement.
• Did your community grow? Are people commenting more or less? Look for trends, not just numbers.
Hot tip: If you’re using Meta Business Suite or Metricool, they’ll give you a simple breakdown to spot patterns fast.
Step #2: Do a digital tidy-up
December is the perfect time for a bit of social media spring cleaning:
• Update your bio. Is it still clear, current and aligned with what you offer now?
• Refresh your highlights. Remove anything outdated and add a few that guide new visitors (e.g. About’, ‘Book Now’, ‘Reviews’).
• Archive old content that no longer fits your brand, especially if you’ve had a glow-up this year!
• Check all your links. Make sure they still work and point to the right places.
Step #4: Get ahead for January
The scroll speeds up again fast in the New Year so be ready for it!
• Plan your first two weeks of January content now. That way, you’re not scrambling on the 2nd with a mince pie in one hand and your phone in the other.
• Start teasing new offers, openings or changes in the final week of December, even if you’re not officially back yet.
• Set one clear intention for January. It could be to grow your list, reintroduce yourself or launch something new. Simplicity wins.
Scan me!
Step #3: Reflect
on your social media strategy
Ask yourself:
• Was I consistent this year?
• Did my content align with my goals?
“Whatever your goal, it starts with getting honest about what hasn’t been working.”
• What do I want social media to do for my business next year?
Maybe you want more engagement, more leads or to finally hand the whole thing over to a pro (hi!). Whatever your goal, it starts with getting honest about what hasn’t been working.
Final thought: Don’t
just show up – check in!
Your socials are a living, breathing part of your business and they deserve a moment of reflection too. Even if you only do a few bits on this list, it’ll help you hit the ground running with content that’s clearer, more intentional and way more aligned.
Your business is 80% energetics & 20% strategy
Ava Reeves explains how protecting your energy can help you make empowered decisions.
II want to talk to you owners never think either, not until I training academy, calendar… yet feeling On paper, everything a different story. forcing myself through Most business advice systems, numbers, but if your energy and the joy that place has faded,
Self-employed hair and beauty professionals know this feeling well. You give your all to your clients, post consistently on socials and keep your calendar full, yet something still feels off. That’s because your business isn’t built just on systems and structure. It’s built on you!
And that’s where energetics comes in.
When I say business is 80% energetics, I’m talking about the invisible yet powerful foundation that shapes how everything flows – your energy, presence, boundaries and clarity. These directly affect how clients experience you and whether they’re drawn to your work. When your energy is aligned, your message feels magnetic and your business expands naturally. Think about it: have you ever agreed to something that felt off, like a date with someone you didn’t find attractive? It felt heavy, forced, didn’t it? Compare that to saying yes to something that feels right, the energy flows, it’s easy, effortless. That’s alignment and your business works the same way.
Check in with your body
Tension, fatigue or irritability aren’t “just part of the job”, they’re signs you’re misaligned. Taking a few intentional moments between clients makes a huge difference (as does making time for a lunch break which doesn’t just consist of a coffee and a biscuit!).
Reconnect to your why
As you evolve, your “why” will too, stay connected to it. When you’re clear on your mission, decisions feel lighter and more aligned.
“Your working hours reflect how you value yourself.”
Here’s a question most people never ask themselves: You might say you want to earn a certain amount each month, but how does that figure feel for you? Don’t think about logistics or overheads, just sit with it.
That figure is your energetic cap, the level your body, mind and boundaries can currently hold. Until you expand that, you’ll keep hitting invisible ceilings. So, how do you make your business 80% energetics? Start small…
Set clear boundaries
Your working hours, cancellation policy and communication all reflect how you value yourself. Boundaries don’t repel people, they attract respect.
Practice energetic hygiene (yep, that’s a thing!)
Start your day with intention, decide how you want to feel. When your energy is calm, your actions flow effortlessly.
Once your energetics are in place, the 20% strategy, pricing, marketing, systems, lands with far more ease. You’ll make decisions from clarity, not fear. Because true success isn’t just about doing. It’s about being.
Your energy sets the ceiling for your success. Protect it, nurture it and watch your business reflect the real, aligned, empowered you.
If you want to receive daily bite-sized insights over 30 days to help you realign your energy, simplify your business and grow with ease, just message “GROWTH” to @aligningwithava on Instagram and I’ll do the rest.

HIRING NAVIGATING THE HIGHS & LOWS OF
Katie Godfrey shares her truth about building a team in the hair and beauty industries.
HHiring your first team member is one of the biggest milestones in growing your business. It’s exciting, empowering and a clear sign that things are heading in the right direction. But what most salon owners don’t talk about, until they’re deep in it, is how hard team building really is.
Behind the scenes of many salons and clinics are business owners silently struggling with staffrelated stress, toxic culture and even betrayal. And if you’re feeling that too, trust me, you’re not alone.
The team dream vs. reality
We often start by thinking: “If I just get the right people, everything will be easier.” But managing people is a full-time job in itself. Building a team is not just about hiring for skills, it’s about building a culture that supports, protects and elevates your brand.
“Salon culture is how your team behaves when you’re not in the room.”
Here’s what I’ve learnt (the hard way) after nearly two decades in business:
1. One bad hire can cost you more than you think
Just one toxic staff member can impact your whole culture, from gossiping and drama to poaching clients or even causing other team members to leave. It doesn’t matter how talented they are; if they don’t align with your values, it’s not worth it.
Tip: Hire slowly. Trust your gut. If something feels off during the trial, act early. And always, always have clear contracts in place from day one.
2. Culture comes from the top
Salon culture isn’t your logo, your Instagram feed, or even your fancy décor. It’s how your team behaves when you’re not in the room.
Are they professional? Do they support each other? Do they respect boundaries? If not, it’s time to look at your own leadership. Your energy, your expectations and your ability to set the tone matters more than you think.
Tip: Be consistent. Lead with kindness, but don’t be afraid to enforce boundaries. Culture is built on what you allow and what you don’t.
3. You need systems to protect yourself
From gross misconduct policies to social media boundaries, Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) to GDPR (data protection) training, your systems protect both your business and your peace of mind. We’ve all heard horror stories: staff using client data, setting up shop nearby or spreading damaging rumours.
Tip: Make sure every team member signs training repayment agreements, confidentiality clauses and understands their legal responsibilities, especially when it comes to client information.
4. You will get hurt. And you will heal
Let’s be real. When a staff member you’ve trained, supported and trusted betrays you, it cuts deep. I’ve had moments where I felt like giving up, when rumours, toxic teams and constant fire-fighting took a toll on my mental health.
But here’s what I know now, you can come back stronger. The hard times teach you how to lead like a CEO, not just a beauty professional.
Tip: Don’t isolate yourself. Surround yourself with mentors, coaches or mastermind groups who understand what it’s really like.
5. There are good people out there
For every difficult team member, there’s someone amazing, loyal, hard-working and aligned with your mission. When you build a strong foundation, those people will come. And when they do, your business becomes unstoppable.
Team building isn’t just about delegation, it’s about leadership, boundaries and emotional resilience. You’ll get it wrong. You’ll learn. And eventually, you’ll build a team that not only drives revenue but lifts your brand to new heights.
So, if you’re navigating the highs and lows of hiring, remember, it’s all part of the process. And you’re not doing it alone.
If you need help and support with building your team, you can read my book Get Off The Tools, listen to my podcast “The Life Of KG” or just reach out! Always happy to chat.

Introducing pre-shampoo treatments to hair care routines.
OOffering salons an additional retailing opportunity as well as a back-wash add on, pre-shampoos refresh the scalp, unclog pores, remove product build-up and prepare the hair for subsequent treatments.
We asked Tetiana Hirenko, Senior Hairstylist at Backstage Chelsea (backstagesalon.uk), to share her thoughts on introducing preshampoo products to your clients.
“Pre-shampoo treatments have become increasingly popular in professional and at-home haircare routines. While not strictly essential for everyone, they can be transformative for certain hair types and conditions. These treatments are particularly beneficial for dry, coarse, colour-treated or damaged hair, as they help protect the cuticle, minimise moisture loss and reduce the stripping effect of cleansing.
“For fine, oily, or very healthy hair, pre-shampoos may not always be necessary, but they can still add shine and manageability.
“Stylists are in the perfect position to introduce pre-shampoos as part of a holistic haircare routine. Start by explaining the why behind the product: protecting colour, strengthening weak strands or restoring softness – advice tailored specifically to the needs of the client.
“Demonstrate the texture and application during a consultation or treatment, showing clients how easy it is to apply before shampooing. Position it as an ‘insurance policy’ for the hair, much like using a primer before makeup or SPF before sun exposure.
“Linking the recommendation to the client’s specific concerns makes it personal, while highlighting results (longer-lasting colour, reduced breakage, healthier texture) reinforces value.
Bundling a pre-shampoo with a stylist’s recommended shampoo and conditioner also helps position it as part of a complete regimen rather than an optional extra.
“When choosing pre-shampoos, look for formulations rich in nourishing and protective ingredients. Oils such as argan, coconut, jojoba and sunflower seed help replenish lipids and lock in hydration. Protein-based formulas with keratin or silk amino acids strengthen compromised hair, while ceramides repair the cuticle.
“For colour-treated clients, products with antioxidants like vitamin E and green tea extract help guard against free radical damage.
“Lightweight, water-soluble oils or cream-based masks are ideal for fine hair to avoid heaviness, while richer balms and intensive oil blends work well for coarse or curly textures.”
