ABT Members’ News........................................................................................................................................................

ABT Members’ News We celebrate the summer whilst planning ahead As we enter May and head towards June, summer really is in sight and unless we’ve been lulled into a false sense of security, the weather has changed for the better. What we do know is that summer nail and makeup colours are here, ahead of the first official day of the new season (June 21st), and here’s hoping we all have our Sun Protection Factor (SPF) at the ready.

It’s imperative that we embrace SPF skincare and protect ourselves and clients’ skin, not only against ageing UVA and UVB rays but also the more dangerous effects of sun damage. If you don’t already have a year-round conversation with clients about the necessity of SPF products, this is the time to start as May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and establishing good habits now could protect against future issues. On page 48, we explore retailing opportunities from brands embracing SPF in their product ranges as well as providing you with educational resources to support clients in identifying early signs of skin cancer through the ABT-Accredited MASCED (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection) training programme delivered by skin cancer awareness charity SKCIN. Once you’ve completed the MASCED course contact the ABT team and we’ll add your new certification to your membership.

Plus don’t forget if there are any new treatments that you would like to add to your skills this summer, ABT are here to help you with a wide range of ABT accredited training courses which can be found on the course finder via the ABT website (abtinsurance.co.uk).

The one-on-one time that we share with accredited lecturers, tutors and insured members is vital to help us deliver membership benefits, provide you with new merchandise since our acquisition by Howden and learn how we can help enhance your career and business. We’re delighted to confirm that ABT will be returning to Professional Beauty North taking place in Manchester in September. Come October we will be back in London for Professional Beauty Autumn, finishing off the show season with new launches and more membership benefits. Plus, the ABT team will again be on-hand to help with your renewals and new memberships.

Exclusive ABT Member discount

But back to this summer. On Sunday 6th July, we look forward to celebrating with nail techs, industry suppliers and educators at the annual Scratch Stars Awards, taking place at the Underglobe in London. ABT is sponsoring two awards, Nail and Beauty Salon of the Year and Educator of the Year, and we’re delighted to have negotiated an additional £10 discount off early bird tickets exclusively for ABT members. Email ella@abtinsurance.co.uk to receive your ABT members’ discount code; just one of the many membership benefits of being part of our ABT community.

On-hand to help

In March it was a pleasure to meet our members on the ABT stand at Professional Beauty London. Over a glass of fizz, we enjoyed hearing insightful industry feedback and stories of what you are currently up to within your businesses.

Meet our Members...........................................................................................................................................................

Over the last decade Shannon Boyle has risen to become an award-winning lash artist, salon owner, educator and influencer. Her lash videos featuring real clients reach an incredible 25 million views on TikTok and as Elleebana Educator for Northern Ireland, she has achieved numerous professional accolades and brand recognition for her lash lifting and brow lamination treatments.

Aged 13, Shannon undertook a makeup course and trained in eyelashes at just 16 starting a parttime business. When she left school at 18, her entrepreneurial instincts led her to focus on building a full time enterprise rather than going to university, working from home as a self-employed lash artist. Shannon explains: “Whilst studying make-up, it became evident that the lash industry offered many lucrative opportunities and that you could earn a good salary as a lash artist, which inspired me to enter the industry. Since then, I have developed a lifelong passion for lash artistry and the amazing results that you can achieve.”

Through hard work, knowledge and passion, Shannon not only excelled as a lash artist but has also built a successful business, establishing Shannon Boyle Artistry offering bespoke lash services including Classic and Russian Volume Eyelash Extensions, Elleebana Lash Lift and Tint, HD Brows and Brow Lamination.

A lifelong PASSION for

LASHES We meet Shannon Boyle, ABT Member, Educator and Lash Artist from Belfast, who shares her inspiring story of success.

“I love that I get to tailor treatments to women to enhance their features and make them feel good about themselves,” says Shannon. “I love a client’s reaction when they see the end result after a Lash Lift, as they are completely mesmerised by their lashes. I also love working for myself and being in charge of my own destiny. “Working in the beauty industry is so much more than just undertaking treatments. You need to know all about managing finances, how to run your own business, marketing, training staff and setting up investments. The skills I’ve learnt as a beauty entrepreneur have been invaluable and have set me up for the future and given me strong business and life skills.”

Her reputation and achievements as a leading lash artist soon led her towards educating others, establishing an ABT-Accredited training academy. From here, as the official Elleebana Trainer for Belfast, Shannon now delivers the brand’s accredited lash lift and brow lamination courses. “I absolutely love teaching and it is amazing to

inspire my artists in their career journey and to ultimately transform their lives,” Shannon enthuses. “It has created so many opportunities, from educating and inspiring artists in their career journeys, networking, meeting new people, speaking at global industry events, to raising my profile in the industry.” Shannon has successfully achieved ABT Accreditation for all the courses she delivers in person including Classic Beginners Foundation, Russian Volume Advanced, Elleebana One Shot Lash Lift, Elleeplex Profusion Brow Lamination and Elleeplex Profusion Lash Lamination as well as the Classic Online Eyelash Extension Course. She believes that working with ABT has helped her to excel as a lash artist, educator and beauty entrepreneur, saying: “Becoming an ABT member and having my courses accredited by ABT has played a huge role in the success of my business and career. ABT is a highly respected professional body within the beauty industry, and its accreditation provides a mark of quality and trust that both clients and students recognise. Having ABT accreditation has enhanced my credibility, ensuring that my training courses meet high industry standards. This not only reassures students that they are receiving reputable and recognised education but also sets them apart in their own careers. “Additionally, being an ABT member has been instrumental in safeguarding my business and maintaining compliance with best practices. The association has strengthened my reputation, increased business opportunities and helped me build a thriving reputation that clients and students can trust.”

“The skills I’ve learnt as a beauty entrepreneur have been invaluable and have set me up for the future.”

Last summer, Shannon decided to utilise social media to educate consumers about professional lash treatments and raise her business profile. Little did she realise that her ‘before and after’ videos featuring her real clients would lead to her becoming a TikTok sensation! “When I put the first video on TikTok in August 2024 it went viral! One of my videos on TikTok generated 25 million views in total, which was incredible. I now have clients approaching me asking to be in one of my TikTok videos, which is amazing!” Following her many achievements, what does Shannon aim to accomplish over the next five years? “To build my online presence in the beauty industry through the content that I create and to keep learning as a lash artist and educator,” she answers. We have no doubt that she will succeed.

SRVC Studio X Andreia Professional at LFW

Manicurist Hayley Evans-Smith partnered with nail brand Andreia Professional when working backstage at SRVC Studio’s London Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2025 runway show.

From left to right: Stacy Humphreys, Head of Education UKI at Xpert Professional; Shaun Christie, Sales Manager at Xpert Professional, South East; David Donnellan, Managing Director UKI for Xpert Professional, Tony Rizzo MBE, Founder of Sanrizz; Leonardo Rizzo, International Creative Director at Sanrizz; and Sharon Cox, International Education Director at Sanrizz.

Creating 18 nails for each of the 32 models in the show, Hayley and her assistant Yuca Murakami produced a total of 576 nails! Following the designer’s brief, Hayley styled nails that defined the collection’s aesthetic fusion of sci-fi, suiting and sensuality.

“SRVC has always celebrated the strong and powerful woman,” Hayley explains. “Nails have the ability to finalise a look’s tone, so it was important that they embodied the collection’s concept right to the finer details. Using piercings in an unexpected manner – especially on delicate nails – adds a tough and assertive vibe. My goal was to create a statement that made the models feel confident and empowered, bringing Ricky’s (designer) and Anna’s (stylist) ideas to life.” She adds: “I absolutely loved using Andreia Professional NC21 Nutricolor as the base and then airbrushing Nutricolor shades on top. The LAB Coconut Cuticle Oil was essential on the day - it made the skin glow, and my team loved them too!” Andreia Professional / Salon Services: salon-services.com Hayley Evans-Smith: haylznails.com

SELL, SCALE OR FRANCHISE?

T

The beauty industry has changed dramatically in recent years. Once a thriving, fast-paced industry, it now presents salon, clinic and training academy owners with new challenges. Staffing shortages, rising costs and shifts in consumer behaviours have made it harder than ever to maintain profitability.

Many beauty business owners find themselves exhausted, stuck and unsure of their next move. Some feel like closing is the only option, while others wonder if their business has more potential than they realise. The truth is, your business is an asset and with the right strategy, you can sell, scale or even franchise it for greater success.

Do you feel like giving up?

Is your business sellable?

Staff recruitment struggles: More professionals are choosing to work for themselves, making it harder to find reliable employees.

Here’s what makes a beauty business valuable to potential buyers:

Running a beauty business has always been demanding, but recent years have made it even tougher. Here’s why many owners feel drained:

Rising costs: Inflation has increased expenses for wages, rent and supplies, squeezing profit margins.

Changing client behaviours: Consumers are more cautious with spending and loyalty isn’t as strong as it once was. More competition: With the rise of home-based and mobile beauty businesses, traditional salons need stronger marketing and differentiation. These challenges leave many owners wondering if it’s worth continuing. But instead of shutting down, there are smarter ways to exit or scale your business profitably.

40

Many beauty business owners never consider selling because they assume no one would buy their business but most are sellable, if they’re structured correctly.

Profitability: A business that generates consistent revenue is more attractive to buyers. Operational independence: If your business can run without you, it’s more valuable.

Systems and processes: Documented procedures make it easier for a new owner to take over. Brand reputation: A strong client base and online presence increase its appeal.

Team stability: Having reliable, well-trained staff in place adds to the business’ value.

If your business isn’t fully sellable yet, small strategic changes can increase its value in 6-12 months and make it a lucrative asset instead of a burden.

.................................................................................................................................................................. Katie Godfrey

Sell, scale or franchise?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed in your business, selling isn’t your only option. Here are three different ways to move forward:

1. Selling your business Selling is a great option if:

• You no longer feel passionate about running it • You want a lump sum to invest in something new • The business has strong systems and profitability A common misconception is that selling means finding someone willing to pay the full price upfront. However, most salon sales involve structured payments where the new owner takes over gradually, reducing financial risk. Tip: The more profitable and well-documented your business is, the higher the sale price you can command.

2. Scaling your business

If you still love the industry but feel overwhelmed, scaling can provide relief while increasing revenue. This might involve:

“Small strategic changes can increase your business’ value in 6-12 months”

• Hiring a salon manager to oversee operations • Expanding services, locations or online training • Leveraging passive income streams like retail sales

Scaling allows you to increase profits without working more hours, but it requires strong leadership, marketing and financial planning.

3. Franchising your business

Franchising is an ideal option for business owners who want to expand without managing multiple locations themselves. A franchise model works best if:

• Your salon or training academy has strong branding and systems

• There’s demand for your business in other locations • You want to grow but prefer others to handle day-to-day operations

Many buyers prefer buying established salons instead of starting from scratch. If your business is thriving, it could become a franchise opportunity for other aspiring owners.

Katie Godfrey...................................................................................................................................................................

Shifting to a CEO Mindset

One of the biggest mistakes beauty business owners make is becoming too emotionally attached to their business. Yes, your salon is your passion but at the end of the day, it should be profitable and sustainable. If it’s draining you financially and emotionally, it may be time to: Streamline operations: Improve efficiency, reduce waste and optimise pricing.

Delegate and automate: Invest in management and software that lightens your workload.

Think like an investor: Instead of seeing your business as a personal project, view it as an asset that should generate long-term value.

By shifting your mindset from a stressed-out salon owner to a confident CEO, you’ll be in a stronger position to sell, scale or franchise successfully.

If you’re at a crossroads in your business, you don’t have to shut down or struggle alone. There are ways to turn your hard work into a profitable exit or expansion strategy. Whether you decide to sell, scale or franchise, the key is making your business attractive to buyers. If you’re unsure how to assess your business value, make it sellable, or transition into franchising, now is the time to start planning for the future. Your business is worth more than you realise, make sure you maximise it!

Sun Protection.................................................................................................................................................................

As summer fast approaches, clients naturally become more conscious of the importance of wearing a product to protect them against the sun’s harmful rays. Although it’s been long known that wearing a daily SPF year-round is the best way to keep skin healthy, for many it’s only overseas holidays or intense temperatures that encourage consumers to reach for the sunscreen. Whether it’s generational, due to cost or simply a lack of education, as a professional dedicated to clients’ wellbeing, you’re perfectly placed to support them in sourcing sun protection that suits their lifestyle and pocket, whether they need an all-round formula that suits the family or a highend skin product they can build into their daily regime. This is your opportunity to not only discuss clients’ needs during their appointments, but also ensure you are stocking the products they’re looking for.

What’s more, May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, an annual event that aims to highlight the importance of protecting skin and the ability to spot the early signs of skin cancer. Although as beauty and hair professionals you are not qualified to medically identify skin issues, you are perfectly placed to observe changes in skin and signpost clients towards the right medical help. If you’re in any way unsure, we asked the experts why wearing a high spectrum SPF product is so important.

“SPF is the one non-negotiable skincare step that everyone should be incorporating into their regime regardless of age, skin type or skin colour. No one is completely safe or protected against UVA/B damage without daily SPF use,” says Kimberley Medd, Head of Clinic at online retailer Face the Future (facethefuture.co.uk), who recently published their second annual ‘365 Days of SPF’ Report, highlighting the importance of daily sun The 365 Days of SPF campaign protection.

is lobbying to slash the 20% VAT charged on all SPF products in the UK. #AxeTheSPFTax

48

“The sun emits harmful rays year-round, even on cloudy days. The UK’s climate, which is often cloudy and damp, might suggest less sun exposure and therefore the attitude of wearing sunscreen frequently is overlooked, leading to cumulative UV damage over time. “There are two types of sun rays that can damage your skin in different ways. UVB rays are responsible for sunburn while UVA rays can lead to premature ageing and the development of skin cancer.

“Not everyone realises that while we’re at low risk of sunburn in the UK most of the year, UVA rays are present year-round and are the main UV aggressor that we should be protecting our skin against daily, to help reduce accelerated fine lines and wrinkles (collagen depletion), protect against pigmentation/sunspots, discoloration and heightened skin sensitivity.” Kimberley continues:

“Whilst skin cancer is rightly still the number one reason to wear SPF, there are a multitude of protective benefits to wearing sunscreen that go beyond sunburn. This includes minimising and protecting the skin from hyperpigmentation, sunspots, fine lines and wrinkles, accelerated collagen depletion, drier skin from no barrier protection and maintaining an even skin tone.” Karen Harvey-Conran (karenharveyconran.com), clinic owner and specialist in advanced procedures, agrees:

“When it comes to sun protection, we always say: don’t skimp on SPF. We recommend using at least SPF 30 every single day to keep your skin safe from harmful UV rays. This level blocks 97% of UVB rays (the ones responsible for sunburns and skin damage). While SPF 50 gives you just a little extra boost, SPF 30 is more than enough for everyday use in the UK. “A lot of people think they only need SPF when they’re on holiday or enjoying the sun, but that’s not the case. UV rays are sneaky and can cause damage on cloudy days or even through windows! That’s why we always tell our clients to wear SPF daily, even if it’s rainy outside. Just like we make time for a cup of coffee in the morning, SPF should be a non-negotiable part of your routine.”

Sun Protection.................................................................................................................................................................

Kimberley Medd, Head of Clinic at Face the Future, shares...

The 5 W’s of Sun Protection 1 2 3 .

Who: All skin types and tones should wear SPF.

.

What: Wear a minimum of SPF 30 or higher.

.

When: SPF should be worn every day, even indoors, and reapplied every few hours depending on factors such as excess perspiration, UV exposure, physical activities/sports and post swimming and sauna use.

4

.

5

.

Where: All skin that is exposed or uncovered should have SPF applied. This includes the back of the ears, hands, neck and face as a minimum. Why: SPF protects against skin damage and reduces the risk of skin cancer, a largely preventable form of cancer.

If clients are unsure as to what level of sun protection they need, Julia Barcoe-Thompson, Director and CoOwner at Face the Future, shares this advice:

“According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, applying SPF 30+ protects you from 97% of UV rays, while SPF 50+ from 98%. UVA rays can cause skin cells to age, linked to increase in wrinkles, and can cause some indirect damage to cells’ DNA. UVA emitted in tanning beds emit three times more intensity than the UVA in natural sunlight.

“Sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin including the face, neck and ears and head if you have thinning or no hair. A lot of the frequently forgotten areas of application include the ears, nose, lips, back of the neck, hands, tops of feet, along the hairline and exposed scalp.”

“Many sunscreens contain Avobenzone, a common ingredient that reacts with minerals in water, causing orange or peach staining on blonde and lighttoned hair extensions. Combined with saltwater, chlorine and UV rays, this can leave hair and extensions dry, brittle and discoloured.”

In addition to choosing Avobenzonefree SPF products, Rachel recommends covering hair with a hat or scarf when in direct sunlight, avoiding submerging hair in pools or the sea (braid and bun it up instead) and saturating hair with bottled water before and after swimming.

How to help further

In addition to educating clients about SPF use, you can also play an important role in raising awareness of skin cancer, looking for early signs and pointing clients towards the right medical support. Developed by national skin cancer awareness charity SKCIN, the MASCED (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection) training programme – which is ABT Accredited – equips you to provide trusted advice to clients and, by observing their skin health, help them access early detection, diagnosis and treatment. So far there are 11,000+ MASCED accredited professionals nationwide. Marie Tudor, CEO of SKCIN (skcin.org), explains:

“With skin cancer now the UK’s most common cancer, and 90% of cases preventable, education is absolutely “To ensure the face is fully protected, 2mg of product should be 2 applied for every cm of skin,” adds Kimberley Medd. “This roughly key. Hair, beauty and aesthetics professionals are uniquely placed to equates to a full finger length. Salon Inclusivity...............................................................................................................................................................

Beaut

yf or Ev eryone

Cassidy Bailey discusses how to create an inclusive salon culture this Pride Month and beyond.

B

eauty and hair salons are uniquely positioned to be sanctuaries for all people, but making sure your space feels truly welcoming requires more than good intentions. Pride Month is a time to celebrate diversity and reflect on how we can create more inclusive spaces, especially in industries built around personal care and self-expression. Prioritise client comfort and confidence with these tips to create and maintain inclusive spaces this Pride Month – and always!

#1. Send a clear message People feel safer when they know they’re welcome. For the LGBTQ+ community particularly, a rainbow – or rainbow flag – is an unmistakable sign that wherever they’re walking into is a safe space.

For your salon, that could mean a rainbow flag sticker in the window by the entrance or even a rainbow flag emoji in your social media bios or captions. Or, if the rainbow doesn’t work for you, add a statement to your website and social media about being proud to be inclusive. Tip: Feature diverse models in your social media. Include different gender expressions, body types, ethnicities and abilities.

#2. Make your services gender-neutral In many salons, it’s normal for services and pricing to be related to gender; take a haircut, for example. The distinction between a ‘men’s

56

haircut’ and a ‘women’s haircut’ enforces gender in an area that could easily be offered neutrally for clients’ comfort.

In this example, instead of a haircut for a man or woman, the service could be reframed as a ‘short cut’ or ‘long cut’? Pricing based on time or hair length, rather than gender, makes services more inclusive. “Traditional beauty industry pricing often reinforces outdated gender norms, with ‘men’s’ and ‘women’s’ services carrying different costs despite requiring the same level of skill and expertise,” says Havva Aykac, company director of Luxe Studio Cosmetics. This small but meaningful change means clients “can feel confident knowing they’re being treated as an individual, not as a gender category.”

Tip: Review your service menu and reword it to be gender neutral.

#3. Be mindful of your language

#4. Support clients with safe spaces

Taking extra care with the language you choose to use in your salon is a key part of helping your entire client base feel welcome. This isn’t to say that language should be policed; it’s about making small adjustments to ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable.

It’s time to think about both the physical and emotional safety of your clients. Making your clients comfortable includes thinking about how they feel about themselves during their visit. A truly inclusive space feels safe at every step, so how can you offer that?

Language can shape experience and there are simple changes you can make to the words you use so your clients have a great one. Instead of saying, “Do you have a boyfriend?”, ask “Do you have a partner?”. Making a conscious effort to use more neutral language will allow your clients to divulge personal details in a way that feels safe to them. When it comes to pronouns, you could try asking about theirs at the start of an appointment and offer yours too! It’s as easy as saying, “Hi, I’m Sarah and I use she/her pronouns. What about you?”

Tip: Update forms and booking systems to include pronoun fields and neutral gender options (not just ‘Mr’ and ‘Mrs’ or ‘M/F’).

Emotionally, this includes things like using inclusive language, signposting your salon as an accepting and welcoming space and following your clients’ lead when it comes to discussing personal details. Physically, this means ensuring your consultation areas allow for privacy, especially for sensitive services like post-surgery treatments. Also, having gender-neutral toilets is a great way to show consideration for all. Tip: Highlight inclusive values in your salon policies. Try adding a short, welcoming statement to your booking confirmation emails or policies page.

#5. Educate and empower your team

#6. Be prepared to make mistakes

Inclusivity isn’t a box to tick. It’s an ongoing practice and it’s always a team effort. If you’re a team manager or supervisor or work closely with other colleagues in your salon, it’s vital that the whole team is on the same page.

Everyone makes mistakes, what matters is how you handle them. So, if you find yourself in an awkward or regretful situation where you may have upset a client, regardless of intent, it’s important to apologise and learn from the experience.

“Educating your team about LGBTQ+ issues and using inclusive language is key. Providing training on topics such as genderinclusive language and understanding LGBTQ+ employees can promote a more welcoming environment,” says Avril Kealy, Digital Content Strategist at Phorest.

Regular open discussions can help staff feel more confident and compassionate when it comes to practising inclusivity. Be open to questions from other members of your team and don’t worry if you don’t have all the answers. Tip: Open up the conversation with a Q&A box on your Instagram Story or invite clients to DM you with ideas if there are specific issues you’d like to tackle or areas you’d like to improve.

In the case of incorrect language use, the solution could be as simple as asking what they would like you to say. So if you’ve used the wrong pronouns, apologise and ask, “What are your pronouns?”. Correct yourself and then move on without making a big deal about it and simply make the effort to use that language going forward. In the rare instance that someone is deeply offended by your mistake, all you can do is apologise and make the necessary changes to avoid making the same mistake again. Remember, you’re only human. Tip: Stay open to feedback and encourage a culture of learning among your team.

Being an inclusive salon isn’t just good ethics, it’s good business. Clients are drawn to spaces where they can be fully themselves. So this Pride Month, and every month, make sure your salon is a place of warm welcomes, acceptance and beauty for everyone.

SkinBase Marks

TWO DECADES

of global success

Award-winning SkinBase™ was founded by salonowner Leesa Faulkner (right) and her brother Richard.

F

Founded in February 2005 by brother and sister entrepreneurs Richard and Leesa Faulkner, the company specialises in manufacturing and distributing highperformance Microdermabrasion, Hydro, Intense Pulsed Light and Radio Frequency devices. Their pioneering Pay As You Go scheme opened up the possibilities of advanced treatments to salons and spas across the UK and further afield.

This year Staffordshire-based non-surgical aesthetic equipment brand SkinBase™ is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Today SkinBase™ technologies are used by over 2,200 businesses worldwide and their courses in MDPro microdermabrasion, Intense Pulsed Light and Collagen Lift have all achieved ABT Accreditation. SkinBase™ was first established after Leesa, who ran a high street salon at the time, experienced difficulties with her existing microdermabrasion machine. Despite the treatments being popular with clients, she found the equipment to be unreliable. Their engineer father, Keith Faulkner, set out to design and make something more reliable and the SkinBase™ MDPro was born.

Richard, already a successful business owner himself and with a background in sales, took the helm to market and sell the new machine, running the business from

home. Meanwhile Leesa travelled the UK providing therapists with free training on the SkinBase™ Microdermabrasion system. Richard knew that for salon owners and therapists to invest in a new brand of microdermabrasion they would need to experience the benefits to their business first hand. So instead of offering a single salon demonstration, they encouraged salons to trial the machine, free of charge, for two weeks without any commitment to buy. This bold move proved to be genius. The ability for beauty professionals to experience the effectiveness and reliability of the SkinBase™ machine in their own business ensured they had the confidence to invest in the system.

“It’s surreal looking back, it was a completely different business back then, we were new to the industry and I personally spent a lot of time speaking to salon owners and working out what they needed in order to make the business a success,” Richard Faulkner reminisces. “We had a really small team and we did everything. I would be making calls to new customers one minute and printing

59

Business Profile................................................................................................................................................................

off direct mail letters to send out to lists of salons the next. We built up a process that worked for us around the free trial offer and that has largely remained the same. I’ve always wanted the focus to be on providing a great service and making it as easy as possible for salons to do business with us and I think we still do that to this day.”

In response to the recession in 2008, SkinBase™ invested in the world’s first truly automated Pay As You Go (PAYG) system using their patented technology to record treatment data. Financed by Richard remortgaging his house, this was a huge gamble but necessary as so many salon owners were struggling to gain traditional finance to purchase machines outright.

The SkinBase™ PAYG scheme meant that businesses could take on a SkinBase™ MDPro on a rental basis with no ongoing servicing or consumable costs. Therapists were now able to introduce microdermabrasion to their treatment menus without a big investment. Seventeen years on and the PAYG model is strong for SkinBase™, with the twoweek free trial offer also still available.

Success further afield

In 2010 the business expanded further into Europe. Already available in the Republic of Ireland, the company moved into Italy and Sweden. In 2024, the brand was introduced into the lucrative United States market, with SkinBase™ US launching at the International Esthetics, Cosmetics & Spa Conference (IECSC) in New York. The SkinBase™ HQ was also on the move, as in 2012 the company invested in a brand new facility in Talke, Staffordshire, with space for manufacturing, administration and a purpose-built training centre to support their growing therapist network.

60

SkinBase’s success is a team effort, with the company moving to a new HQ in 2012.

The portfolio expands

With the popularity of non-surgical treatments showing no sign of slowing, in 2014 the company expanded with the launch of SkinBase™ Intense Pulsed Light, through a partnership with an Italian company. This Medical CE certified IPL system, also available on the PAYG scheme, delivers permanent hair reduction and minimises the appearance of acne, vascular lesions and sun damaged skin through stateof-the-art light wavelength technology. The company has continued to innovate, with the introduction in 2019 of the SkinBase™ Collagen Lift machine, available to buy or rent, sculpting and visibly improving the appearance of the face and body using radio frequency. Combining the technology of the Collagen Lift with the MDPro, the company designed the SkinBase™ Collagen Ultimate advanced facial treatment to resurface, regenerate, repair and sculpt the skin.

The original and ever-popular SkinBase™ MDPro was upgraded in 2024 with the launch of the SkinBase™ Hydro attachment for facial treatments that banish dull, tired skin and enhance radiance. The Hydro handpiece incorporates a natural blend of AHAs and BHAs to gently exfoliate, followed by an infusion of Brightening, Clarifying or Renewing serum to address clients’ individual skin concerns.

............................................................................................................................................................... Business Profile

“I always wanted the focus to be on providing a great service and I think we still do that to this day” Continuing to raise brand awareness

SkinBase™ continues to work hard to keep brand awareness high whilst supporting their valued therapist network. The first SkinBase™ national TV campaign launched in 2017, promoting the brand and treatments to consumers and driving new business through salon doors. The company also participated in TV show presented by Zoe Ball, documenting a group of clients through a six-week course of treatments, and later partnered with salon business mentor Liz McKeon to film a pilot show, The Salon Turnaround.

A key aspect of their therapist support is the SkinBase™ Transformation of the Year competition. Launched in 2022 to recognise the significant difference skin therapists make to their clients lives, the competition invites therapists to submit before and after results from their SkinBase™ treatments. Entry is now open for the SkinBase™ Transformation of the Year 2025, searching for the best client results from a course of treatments using SkinBase™ Microdermabrasion, Hydro, IPL, and/or Collagen Lift technologies.

Along with technical support available seven days a week, SkinBase™ therapists are further backed through the official SkinBase™ Therapist Facebook group, an online community of 3,000 members sharing business advice and treatment results. As they mark two decades of success, the SkinBase™ team have much to celebrate. Over the year’s they’ve scooped industry accolades not only for their treatments but also customer service, training, innovation and use of social media.

We look forward to seeing what the SkinBase™ team achieve next. We’re told there is a new device in development that will complement the existing range of Aesthetic devices. We’ve no doubt it will be fantastic!

The company was founded in 2005 with the launch of the SkinBase™ MDPro microdermabrasion system.
