Melissa’s must haves
This season…
I
Dear Readers,
In a sector as trend-led as beauty and hair, the annual announcement of the ‘colour of the year’ is always a moment of anticipation. These shades are not chosen lightly; they emerge from careful analysis of cultural shifts, consumer behaviour and the evergrowing influence of social media. They set the tone for design across fashion, beauty and décor, guiding the creative direction of the year ahead.
For 2026, WGSN and Coloro have selected Transformative Teal, a shade that speaks to redirection and ecological responsibility. It reflects the growing demand from consumers for sustainability and conscious choices. In contrast, Pantone has unveiled Cloud Dancer, an airy white hue that symbolises calm and the desire for a fresh start. Together, these colours highlight the duality of the year ahead; one of reflection and responsibility, balanced with renewal and optimism.
What is clear from these forecasts is that 2026 is set to be a year of change. Change, and transformation, is something our industry knows well. At the start of a new year, it inspires us to broaden our horizons, branch out and embrace new opportunities. In beauty and hair, being open to change is not only about following trends, but also about enhancing your business, elevating your career and ensuring you are prepared for whatever comes next.
At ABT, we are committed to supporting you through this journey. Whether in our membership magazine, on beautyandhairdressing.co.uk, or across our social channels, we will continue to share the latest developments, spotlight the professionals shaping our industry and guide you to the events that deliver the very best in education.
And if you are inspired to embrace colour trends yourself, explore our online features where we showcase nail, makeup and hair looks that bring Transformative Teal and Cloud Dancer to life. With ABT membership, you can enjoy the creativity of change while knowing you have the protection and peace of mind that insurance provides. With trends in mind, in this issue of Beauty & Hairdressing, regular columnist Alicia Humphreys highlights changes in social media marketing and how to make these work best for your business, whilst Ava Reeves encourages you to use your business pages to create a brand that converts into sales.
“I admit it, Emily in Paris is my guilty pleasure, and so too are her short, squared nails in The GelBottle Inc.’s chic Mocha shade.”
“I’m always losing lip products, so AlumierMD LipBoost with its handy carry case, means I’m never without this peptidepacked hydrator.”
Plus, if you’re aiming to take your beauty or hair business to the next level in 2026, Katie Godfrey shares how to build habits for your best year yet. Best wishes,
Melissa Dennis, Editor

Dear Members, New Year, New Transformations
A
As the “new year, new me” conversations begin, salons and beauty professionals everywhere are preparing for fresh trims, renewed enthusiasm for wellbeing and increased interest in skin education. Yet transformation is not confined to January, it is the heartbeat of our industry, happening multiple times a day with every client who walks through the salon door. Our role in the beauty and hair profession is unique, blending care with creativity and community. The most forward-thinking salons and beauty brands are embracing this blend, and at ABT we take it further by combining membership with insurance coverage. Membership with ABT is built on consistency, loyalty and trust, and when layered with insurance becomes something even stronger: peace of mind that allows you to focus on your craft, your business and your career.
When education and insurance benefits are embedded into membership, you are not left to navigate risk alone. Instead, you gain the confidence to innovate, expand your services and lead trends knowing you are covered if the unexpected happens.
The ABT team is here to support your growth and success in the year ahead. If you are not already connected with us on socials, now is the perfect time to join our community. You’ll find us on Facebook (AssociatedBeautyInsurance), Instagram (@abtinsurance) and also LinkedIn (abt-insurance). Here’s to transformation, creativity and confidence; here’s to 2026!
In a fast-moving industry where trends, product innovation and upskilling are constant, protection should never be seen as a luxury. Insurance is the silent partner in every service and treatment you provide, enabling you to do what you excel at and enjoy most.

Hairdressing charity offers dignity to those living homeless
Volunteer barbers and stylists provided more than 20 free haircuts and simple grooming services at a pop-up salon in Victoria Station, London.
The event was organised by Haircuts4Homeless, the charity that supports those living without a permanent home, and offered a small act of dignity to people experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity.
Haircuts4Homeless was set up by hairdresser Stewart Roberts, who was inspired by the actions of hairdressers around the world cutting hair for the homeless. Commenting Stewart Roberts says:
“Homelessness is not just a crisis of housing, it’s one of dignity, connection and prevention. By setting up outside a major transport hub, we hope to bring the issue directly into public view, let those affected feel a moment of care, and prompt more action from all of us – citizens, authorities, businesses.” Image Credit: Jack Eames Haircuts4Homeless: haircuts4homeless.com

Amanda was also selected to take over the Northern Lass Lounge’s online community for a day, enabling her to share and promote her business amongst its members.
Spiritual Flamingo was launched by Amanda in 2022 after she began experiencing seizures which led to a complete change of life. Through starting her business, she created a calm, nurturing sanctuary to deliver reiki, massage, meditation, sound healing and reflexology treatments and training. Commenting on her success, Amanda (pictured) told us:
“It felt amazing to be honoured because everyone in our business community has worked amazingly and achieved so much this year so I didn’t think I would be nominated. Every women that won an award thoroughly deserved it for their amazing achievements this last year and it was an honour to be part of it.” Spiritual Flamingo: instagram.com/spiritual_flamingo 20

All-aboard Fresha’s self-care campaign During December, beauty and wellness booking platform Fresha unveiled one of its largest UK outdoor campaigns to date with a full London bus takeover.
The campaign saw more than 300 “Fresharised” Routemaster buses run across high-traffic routes including Shoreditch, Camden, Oxford Circus, Angel, Hackney, King’s Cross and the West End. Branded with the line “Selfcare just got Fresha”, the campaign was designed to reach commuters, partygoers, shoppers and tourists during the festive rush, when demand for sameday and last-minute appointments peaks.
Timed with rising searches for “selfcare,” the initiative tapped into TikTok’s #LondonCommute trend, making the striking buses highly shareable. James Hayward-Browne, Head of Brand & Content Marketing at Fresha, says:
“Our goal was simple: to meet people where they are. December in London is busy and can feel overwhelming with office parties, Christmas prep, winter skin and hair flare-ups and everything in between. These buses are a reminder that self-care can happen at any time, not just once the new year begins. Whether someone needs a quick reset during their lunch break, a blow-dry before an event, or a pre-flight manicure before heading home for the holidays, Fresha makes it easy to prioritise yourself whenever you need it.” Fresha: fresha.com/for-business

Pro praises Salon System trio for Korean lash lifting
As the Korean Lash Lift trend continues to grow, Salon System’s Lash & Brow Lift is proving a popular choice for professionals. Powered by a cysteamine‑based formula, the system delivers soft curls and healthy lashes. A small, safe level of ethanolamine thioglycolate ensures consistent results, while collagen and panthenol nourish and condition eyelashes. Glue Balm replaces traditional adhesives with a mess‑free solution that offers precise lash positioning and enhanced client comfort. Lisa Stone, Head Educator at Salon System, says:
“I love the Salon System cysteaminebased trio products. They provide a gentler yet highly effective treatment that’s compatible with classic, Korean and brow lamination techniques, creating beautifully soft, fluffy and long-lasting lifts. The system performs exceptionally well on even the straightest and most resilient lashes, with a lash-loving formulation trusted by professionals for consistently stunning results without compromise or damage.” Salon System: salonsystem.com

Salon Salon Sustainability Sustainability Trends
I
If you’re thinking about making your salon more sustainable, 2026 is the year to do it! Many salon owners fear that becoming more sustainable will be a big cost, but by incorporating more eco-conscious practices, salons can save money in the long run.
Refillable products
In 2026, we’ll see many salons start to invest more in refillable products. When it comes to products like shampoo and conditioner, salons will look to offer products that, once finished, clients can return to the salon and simply purchase a refill instead of buying the entire bottle and its packaging again, reducing packaging waste. We’ll also see more salons offering refill stations in collaboration with suppliers as another way to reduce product packaging waste too.
Waste minimisation
One major focus for 2026 will be salons using dedicated recycling containers for materials such as plastics, foils and hair. This provides a great opportunity for salons to work with suppliers to return packaging and audit their overall waste. From this, they may realise the extent of their environmental impact and look at switching to compostable alternatives.
32
Nilofer Aydinli predicts how salons will pivot to become more sustainable in 2026.
For example, at Enki Towels, all our towels are biodegradable and compostable; they break down within 8–12 weeks and can be disposed of in a compost bin, food waste bin or general household waste due to their ability to biodegrade even in landfill. Looking at biodegradable alternatives is a great way for salons to reduce their carbon footprint and make their salon more sustainable.
Becoming more water and energy efficient
Salons use a lot of water and in 2026 we’ll see owners prioritising ways to be more water and energy-efficient, finding opportunities to cut costs and consumption. This could include installing LED lighting, using eco showerheads at the backwash and reviewing towel options to reduce both water and energy usage. Disposable towels allow salons to eliminate laundry, saving money on detergent, energy and water.
Sustainable ingredients
Now more than ever, salons are reviewing their product offerings, both retail and colour, and shifting away from harmful chemicals and harsh ingredients towards more eco-friendly, natural alternatives.
...............................................................................................................................................................Heather Hughes ......................................................................................................................................................... Salon Sustainability
Many salons have already begun to use ammoniafree colour processes and introduce vegan retail products that cater to a new clientele while being kinder to both the client’s hair and the planet.
Going digital
“By incorporating eco-conscious practices, salons can save money”
Salon Sustainability
As the digital world continues to grow, this is a trend that will only accelerate in the years ahead. Salons will continue to embrace digital tools and move away from paper appointment books, loyalty cards and gift cards. Instead, they’ll adopt online booking systems, e-gift cards and e-loyalty programmes to reduce paper waste while streamlining their operations. There are so many benefits to becoming more sustainable, not just for the salon, but for clients, and of course, for the environment too.

Cryotherapy.....................................................................................................................................................................
W
While we often encourage clients to shield their skin from the harsh effects of winter weather, controlled cold therapies, known as cryotherapy, can offer significant benefits for the face and body across all skin types.
Dermatologists have used cryotherapy since the 1960s, primarily with liquid nitrogen, to treat surface skin conditions such as benign lesions and viral warts. Today, as research continues to highlight the advantages of extreme low temperatures for common skin concerns, practices like skin icing and cryotherapy-inspired products are gaining popularity. Such products and treatments have wide-ranging benefits. By constricting blood vessels, inflammation is calmed and puffiness reduced; the skin’s immune defences are strengthened against environmental aggressors. In addition, boosted collagen production supports elasticity and firmness whilst pores are tightened which smoothes skin texture and minimises the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The experts in beauty and aesthetic technology at Zemits explain:
“Naturally, cold therapy has a tremendous positive impact on the skin by constricting and toning blood and lymphatic vessels. This eventually leads to improved skin immune response and helps to prevent premature skin ageing caused by skin inflammation and sun damage. “Cold impact, in general, is well known for its positive ability to stimulate blood circulation upon contrast temperature stimulation, enhancing oxygenation and nourishing skin cells, leading to a brighter and healthier complexion.”
Incorporating extreme low temperatures into face & body treatments.

Skin therapists, salons and spas have access to a wide range of technologies and tools designed to deliver skin icing and cold therapies within your professional treatments. From advanced multifunctional devices to simple handheld tools inspired by ancient practices, there’s a cryotherapy solution to bring a winter glow back to client’s’ skin this season...

Despite its intensive exfoliation, the facial leaves no residual peeling. Instead, skin feels deeply hydrated, with immediate visible results and no downtime required. The treatment unfolds in two stages; firstly, a warming Resurfacing Masque delivers powerful exfoliation, thanks to sugar cane extract (a natural source of glycolic acid), retinol and niacinamide. This is followed by the Rejuvenating & Hydrating Masque, a cooling, refreshing blend infused with hyaluronic acid and extracts of aloe vera, grape seed, green tea, rosemary and peppermint. To complete the experience, a tailored selection of iS Clinical’s cosmeceutical serums and creams is applied, leaving the complexion smooth, radiant and revitalised. Alicia Humphreys.............................................................................................................................................................
Social Media Trends you actually need to know! Alicia Humphreys outlines how social media marketing will evolve in 2026 and what this means for your business pages.
#1. AI-Assisted content becomes
the norm, not the novelty
We’ve officially moved from “AI is scary” to “AI is my little marketing sidekick.” But in 2026, we’re going a step further.
What this actually means for you:
• AI will assist with content creation, not replace humans.
• Platforms like Instagram and TikTok will introduce more built-in AI tools.
• Businesses will use AI for content topics for their audience before they trend.
• ChatGPT-style bots will become standard on websites and DMs.
The big shift?
Clients will expect faster replies and more personalised responses, and AI will help you deliver that without burning out.
#2. Long-form content makes
a major comeback
Short-form isn’t dead, but users are craving depth again. Think:
• Carousel storytelling. • 60–90 second Reels. • LinkedIn articles. • TikTok “mini documentaries”. • YouTube Shorts pointing to longer videos.
44
People want value, not fluff and the businesses willing to share proper insight will stand out in a sea of 7-second trends. Why this matters: This is incredible news for small businesses, especially service providers, because your expertise becomes your superpower.
#3. Trust-driven content
outperforms aesthetics
2026 is the year we officially leave “perfect feeds” behind. Audiences want:
• Real faces. • Honest storytelling. • Behind-the-scenes. • Case studies. • Screenshots. • “Here’s what didn’t work” posts. Pretty graphics still have a place, but trust-first content converts better. Trend takeaway: Being real is no longer a trend, it’s the strategy.
#4. Search becomes a bigger
deal than the algorithm
Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube… they’re all turning into search engines. People are no longer scrolling aimlessly, they’re searching for:
• “Best social media manager for small business”.
• “Hair colour trends 2026”. • “Best nail tech in my area”. • “Why aren’t my ads working?”.
.............................................................................................................................................................Alicia Humphreys
What you need to do:
• Use clear keywords in your captions. • Include keywords in your on-screen text in Reels.
• Add searchable titles to your videos. • Make your bio SEO-friendly.
If you don’t optimise for search, you won’t get found.
(and more necessary)
Cost-per-click will continue to rise in 2026, but so will automation.
• Autopilot A/B testing. • Auto-generated creative suggestions. • Smarter interest and behaviour modelling. • More data, even with stricter privacy laws.
to boom
More platforms, especially Instagram and TikTok, will allow:
• In-app purchases. • In-app bookings. • In-post “buy now” buttons.
For service-based businesses, this means:
• More in-app deposit options. • Faster conversions. • Less friction for your client.
#5. Paid social gets smarter Meta, TikTok and Pinterest ads will offer:
#6. Social commerce is about
Your customers won’t need to leave the app to book you, which means more bookings.
What this means for your business in 2026
✗ You don’t need…
What to expect:
Small budgets will still work, but only when paired with:
• Clear messaging. • Solid audience targeting. • Strong creative.
Paid + organic will become the winning combo for business owners in 2026.
To follow every trend To dance on TikTok An aesthetic life to grow online
✔ You do need… Messaging that speaks directly to your ideal client Clear value in your content A human-first brand A consistent posting schedule

Ava Reeves shares how to your turn your business page into a brand that converts.
When it comes to curating a social media page that reflects your business’ energy and ethos, you don’t need another ‘100 hook ideas’ download. You need to use your voice and show up in a way that feels authentic to you. Your clients can feel the difference between forced and flow. A polished page without your energy might get followers, but it won’t convert them into loyal clients. And it will drain you if you feel boxed into one type of content (creatives, I see you) This is where most get stuck. They post consistently, tick all the boxes…yet something still feels flat. That’s because you’re not meant to blend in – you’re meant to be felt.
48
.......................................................................................................................................................................Ava Reeves
1. Stop curating. Start connecting
3. Be brave enough to be different
If you want your brand to feel calm, grounded and empowering, your tone, visuals and captions should reflect that. If you want it bold and confident, show up that way, don’t hide behind another Canva carousel template.
Be patient, building an aligned audience takes time and playing the long game pays off.
People don’t just buy services anymore, they buy energy. They’re drawn to how you make them feel, not just what you do. Instead of asking, “What should I post?” ask, “What do I want my audience to feel?”
The most magnetic people online aren’t the loudest, they’re the realest. When everyone’s following trends, courage builds trust. Before posting, ask: “Does this feel like me?” If not, don’t post it. Authenticity is your algorithm.
4. Clarity converts
Post from your authentic energy, not performance and watch how magnetic you become.
2. Tell the story behind your work
Clients don’t just want before-and-afters, they want why (remember, we are nosey).
Share the moments that shaped your business:
• Why you started • Lessons learned (yes, mistakes count) • Values that guide you • The kind of experience you want clients to have
Your story creates emotional connection. Connection creates conversion. I started my beauty business in my spare flat as a single mum and grew into a recognised figure in the lash industry. People resonated with my journey because I shared the realness, not just the highlights.
A confused audience never buys. When someone lands on your page, they should instantly know:
• What you offer • Who it’s for • How to book or buy
Write captions and bios that sound human (not like our good friend Mr Chat GPT). Instead of “We offer a range of hair extensions,” try: “London’s go-to salon for natural-looking hair extensions.” Simple, grounded and real always wins.
5. Energy first, strategy second
Your page is an energetic mirror. Post from alignment, remember your why and your business becomes a brand that converts naturally because people trust it.
If you’re ready to rediscover your voice, realign your message and grow a business that stands out because it’s you, I’ve created something to help. Get daily insights in your email for 30 days to simplify, align, and show up online with confidence and clarity. Message “GROWTH” to @aligningwithava on Instagram and I’ll do the rest.

NAD+ Skincare................................................................................................................................................................
NAD+: Targeting visible signs of ageing at a cellular level
I
In the ever‑evolving beauty industry, an ingredient generating excitement among skin specialists is NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). Once confined to the world of cellular biology, this coenzyme is now making its way into serums, creams, masks and ingestible skincare as an effective anti‑ageing treatment.
Playing a critical role in energy metabolism, DNA repair and cellular communication, NAD+ is found in every living cell. It powers mitochondria, the “batteries” of cells, and activates sirtuins, enzymes linked to longevity and healthier cell function. Like most cellular processes, as we age NAD+ levels decline, leading to reduced cellular efficiency, slower repair processes and visible signs
of ageing such as fine lines, dulled tone and loss of elasticity in skin.
Traditional anti‑ageing ingredients, such as retinol, peptides and hyaluronic acid, primarily work on the skin’s surface or stimulate collagen production. NAD+ targets ageing at the molecular level, addressing the underlying cellular decline, supporting the skin’s ability to repair DNA damage and regenerate cells.
By neutralising free radicals, NAD+ can reduce oxidative stress, boost cellular metabolism to improve skin texture and radiance, enhance barrier function to keep skin resilient and reduce damage from UV exposure and pollution.
“NAD+ improves skin texture, keeps skin resilient and reduces UV damage”
52
.................................................................................................................................................................NAD+ Skincare
NAD+ in skincare
NAD+ molecules are relatively large and it may be that an NAD+ derivative may be more stable for use in topical products and supplements. Brands incorporating NAD+ often combine it with other actives to maximise results. NAD+ may be paired with antioxidants like vitamin C or E, hydrating agents such as hyaluronic acid, collagen-stimulating peptides or barrier‑strengthening ceramides.
A person’s NAD+ levels can be boosted by ingestible supplements or intravenously (IV). NAD+ supplements have already gained traction among those wanting to support skin health from within and offer retail potential for salons. For example, Curated Beauty London’s Inner Confidence supplement is formulated with NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), a form of vitamin B3, that helps replenish NAD+ levels (curatedbeauty.london).
For example, Medik8’s Advanced Pro-Collagen+ Peptide Cream includes Growth Factor MiniProtein™ to stimulate collagen levels, paired with NAD+ Longevity Booster to optimise absorption (medik8.com). Remember to look for products and formulations backed by credible science and transparent testing.
If you incorporate NAD+ skin products into your professional facials, these can be marketed as ‘premium’, whilst having NAD+ topical products for purchase to support in-salon treatments, will differentiate your salon. The NAD+ trend is still in its early stages, but with consumers increasingly educated about cellular health, NAD+ products look likely to be in demand in 2026.

Katie Godfrey...................................................................................................................................................................
BUILDING HABITS FOR YOUR BEST YEAR YET Katie Godfrey inspires us to establish new business practices to smash 2026!
N
New year, fresh energy. But let’s be honest, January can also bring a bit of pressure.
Everywhere you look, people are shouting about goals, resolutions, and “new year, new you.” However, you really don’t need to overhaul everything overnight to make this your best year in business. What you do need is consistency, clarity and habits that actually move the needle. I’ve been in business for over 16 years and the biggest lesson I’ve learnt is, it’s not the massive leaps that create success, it’s the small, intentional actions you repeat every day, even when you don’t feel like it.
So, if you’re ready to start strong and stay strong, here are some habits to lock in this year:
54
.................................................................................................................................................................. Katie Godfrey
1. Plan, don’t panic
So many salon owners and beauty pros start the year winging it. Posting on their socials when they remember, chasing clients last minute and wondering why things feel all over the show. Instead, take a few hours each week to plan your content, offers and goals. When you’re intentional, you take back control. Create a “CEO morning” once a week. Coffee, planner and no treatments. Just you working on the business, not in it.
2. Know your numbers
If you don’t know what’s coming in and going out, you’re guessing and guessing doesn’t grow a business. Start tracking your weekly income, expenses and profit. You will be amazed how quickly your decisions get smarter when you can see the real picture. If you don’t understand your numbers or know how much profit you’re making per treatment, use the Salon Success Manager App which you can download at salonsuccessmanager.com
3. Prioritise energy
You can’t pour from an empty cup. Working until you’re exhausted doesn’t make you successful, it makes you burnt out. Protect your energy like it’s your biggest business asset (because it is). Sleep, movement, time off, they’re not luxuries, they are strategy.
4. Invest in support
Whether it’s a mentor, a cleaner or a new team member, you don’t have to do everything yourself. The fastest growth I have ever had came when I started letting go. Delegation isn’t weakness, it’s leadership.
Sometimes you need to invest in the support, even if it feels scary to get to the next level.
5. Keep learning
The beauty industry moves fast. Stay ahead by learning about marketing, money and mindset, not just treatments. You can be the best at what you do, but if no one knows about you or you are undercharging, it’s going to be a tough year.
6. Celebrate every win
Too often we’re so focused on the next goal that we forget to appreciate how far we’ve come. Each client, review or new skill is a step forward. Celebrate it; that energy builds momentum.
The new year isn’t about becoming a new version of yourself, it’s about becoming more intentional. The business you want this year is built in the quiet moments. The daily discipline, the mindset shifts and the courage to keep going when no one’s clapping yet. Let’s make 2026 the year you finally create a business that gives you more money, freedom and joy.

WINTER
Sunless Tanning..............................................................................................................................................................
Tanned skin may be synonymous with summer, but there’s no reason clients shouldn’t embrace a golden glow in winter. Whether maintaining radiance from a winter holiday or simply seeking a confidence lift, sunless treatments offer more than just tan. Many clients report feeling happier and more self-assured after a professional tan. “Clients want a mood boost at this time of year; a professional tan delivers that instantly,” says Nicola Matthews, founder of British tanning brand Sienna X (sienna-x.co.uk).
Skincare meets sunless tan
Modern tanning products are no longer just about pigment, but also skincare. Hydrationboosting actives such as multi-weight hyaluronic acid and niacinamide help tans develop evenly and fade gracefully. Cleaner, more stable DHA blends now deliver smoother finishes with less of the traditional tanning solution aroma.
“In recent years we’ve seen some exciting shifts in sunless tanning, with formulas now caring for the skin as much as creating colour,” explains Nicola.
“One of the most exciting developments is the introduction of DMI (Dimethyl Isosorbide),” notes ABT Member Izabela Jachowska, awardwinning spray tan artist and founder of Spray Tan Leicester (spraytanleicester.com) and The Tanning Academy UK. “It enhances delivery of DHA and other actives, creating deeper colour, smoother fade and improved longevity. Some Why sunless tanning is more than brands using this ingredient in their marketing just asolution summer service. strategy calling their ‘sweat resistant’”.
Why sunless tanning is more than just a summer service.
Post-treatment innovations are also reshaping the industry. “Another new addition in the tanning industry is post-tan oil, a blend of dry oils which is applied by gun right after the tan solution, to hydrate and improve longevity,” explains Izabela.
“Traditionally during spray tan courses, trainers repeat the mantra “avoid oils”. However, oils from seeds like jojoba and almond work wonders for skin and tan. The oil which should be avoided is mineral oil.”

Driving winter bookings
For those clients who tan regularly during the summer, but don’t rebook during the winter months, it’s time to reposition the treatment through a targeted marketing campaign.
“January and February are great months to inspire clients with the feel-good boost that a healthy glow brings,” suggests Nicola. “Simple, uplifting campaigns like ‘Feel Good Glow’, or bundling spray tans with skincare, waxing or brow treatments, give clients a great reason to treat themselves. “Ideas like ‘Rid January Blues in 15 minutes for a week-long summer feeling’ is another great approach to drive bookings… Posting real client beforeand-afters, sharing winter tanning tips and reactivating lapsed clients with a VIP offer can make a big difference.”
Izabela adds: “Email marketing also works well to remind old clients about tanning. Your campaign could include information about dry skin in the winter and how a professional tan may help to reduce this dull look.”
Professional expertise vs. DIY
“Not every client can afford regular professional treatments and as therapists we have to respect that and help guide them towards the best results,” Nicola cautions.
“A professional spray tan is a completely different experience to tanning at home. You’re giving clients expert DHA matching, perfectly even application in all those hard-to-reach areas, natural contouring and a finish that develops evenly. “Most importantly, clients

walk out feeling instantly confident that their tan is professionally applied.”
Emphasising the skills you have as a trained sunless tanning expert is also important, educating clients about the difference between a professional and home tan. Izabela advises:
“In your marketing, you could explain that spray tan artists understand the science behind tanning, skin limitations, how to choose the correct base and DHA level and how to properly prep and protect areas like hands, elbows, knees and feet. “We balance pH, apply barrier cream, customise the solution and finish with blending techniques.
“Professionals don’t just apply colour; we create a personalised treatment that delivers better longevity, evenness, depth and finish than any self-tan can achieve at home.” However, you should also be sensitive to your clients’ choices and respect those that choose to apply their treatment themselves, as Nicola explains:
“It’s also true that some clients need to prioritise their budget on other treatments. That doesn’t have to be a lost opportunity, in fact, it’s where retail tanning becomes a powerful add-on. High-quality home tanning allows clients to maintain their glow between appointments, and this becomes incremental revenue for the therapist without adding treatment time to the diary. “When therapists position both options as part of a personalised glow plan, they
naturally increase client loyalty, treatment frequency and retail sales. It becomes a win-win for the client and the business.”
Keeping your kit in top condition
If you’re running a winter tan campaign, you’ll need to refresh your stocks of solutions and disposables, but should you worry about replacing your key kit? “Although the tanning industry evolves extremely quickly, with good care, equipment can last for years but only if it is regularly maintained,” says Izabela. “I always recommend regular deep

cleaning of machines, guns, filters and extraction units plus replacing parts before they fail.” “Check your gun spray pattern, your machine airflow, and your tent fabric. If everything is running smoothly, there’s no need to replace it. Quality kit, cared for well, really does stand the test of time,” Nicola adds.
In addition, don’t forget to ensure your air filtration system is serviced and working effectively. “The number-one essential is an extraction fan; this should be considered a standard, not an upgrade,”
warns Izabela. “For salons or home-based businesses, an extraction booth offers the highest standard, though it’s a bigger investment. Even for tent tanning, a high-quality extraction fan with reusable filters makes a huge difference. Although the initial cost is higher, the benefits are huge.”

Winter tanning is no longer just about colour, it’s about confidence, skin health and professional expertise. With evolving formulas, smarter marketing and well-maintained equipment, you can keep clients glowing all year round.

Hand & Nail Care.............................................................................................................................................................
“By sharing tailored aftercare tips, professionals position themselves as trusted experts” - Sara Pinto, Andreia Professional
HANDLE with Care
A
As temperatures drop and central heating rises, winter presents unique challenges for hand and nail health. For professionals, this is the time to educate clients, and stock shelves, with targeted solutions that protect, repair and nourish.
“Hands and nails are just as exposed to external aggressors as the face. Frequent exposure to harsh chemicals, lack of hydration and external trauma can all impact their condition,” explains Sara Pinto, Andreia Professional’s Nail Product Director.
64
Constant exposure to cold air, fluctuating indoor heating and frequent handwashing strip away natural oils, leaving skin cracked and feeling tight. Nails, meanwhile, lose flexibility and hydration, leading to peeling, splitting and breakage. For salons, this seasonal stress underscores the importance of recommending products that combine hydration, barrier repair and protection.
.............................................................................................................................................................. Hand & Nail Care
Hero ingredients When curating winter hand and nail care ranges, look for formulations that feature ingredients that not only deliver results, but also resonate with clients increasingly attuned to science‑backed beauty: Humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid): Draw moisture into the skin, ensuring lasting hydration. Rich emollients (shea butter, cocoa butter): Smooth rough patches and create a protective layer. Barrier builders (ceramides): Reinforce the skin’s natural defences against water loss.
Nail strengtheners (Vitamin E, biotin, keratin): Support resilience and reduce brittleness. Cuticle conditioners (jojoba, almond and coconut oils): Penetrate deeply to soften and protect delicate cuticle tissue.
Gentle exfoliants (urea, lactic acid): Remove dead cells, allowing active ingredients to absorb more effectively.
Professional care recommendations
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise: Encourage clients to apply hand cream after every wash. Position travel‑size tubes as “on‑the‑go essentials.” Nighttime rituals: Suggest intensive overnight treatments with occlusive balms, paired with cotton gloves for enhanced absorption.
Cuticle oil on-the-go: A drop of nourishing oil massaged into the nail bed throughout the day prevents dryness and promotes healthy growth. Most pro brands offer cuticle oil pens for retailing to busy clients.
Protective practices: “Clients should also protect hands with gloves when cleaning or washing up and ensure a diet rich in vitamins and minerals to strengthen nails from within,” advises Andreia Professional’s Sara Pinto.
Retail & salon opportunities
In‑salon treatments, such as paraffin wax dips or hydrating hand masks, can be marketed as indulgent winter luxuries that also deliver visible results, partnered with bundles of hand cream cuticle oil and protective gloves for use at home.
“Education is a powerful tool for preventing damage and building client trust. Nail techs should demonstrate how to use homecare products like cuticle oils and nourishing treatments to maintain nail health between appointments,” Sara explains.
“Winter is the season to champion hand and nail wellness”
“By sharing tailored aftercare tips based on lifestyle and nail needs, professionals position themselves as trusted experts, encouraging clients to invest in long-term care and premium retail solutions.”By spotlighting the right ingredients, educating clients on protective routines and offering curated product solutions, you can transform seasonal challenges into opportunities for care, loyalty and sales. The Practitioner’s Secret: The Invisible Tool That Turns Any Space Into a Sanctuary
?????
People may forget what’s being said or what they did, but they will always remember how you made them feel, for emotion leaves a lasting signature that words never can. For beauty professionals working in hair, nails, aesthetics or holistic care, the environment you create shapes your clients’ entire experience. The service matters, but how your clients feel in your space is what stays with them. One powerful invisible tool can elevate that feeling instantly: natural scent. Why natural scent works so quickly Scent travels directly to the limbic system – the part of the brain responsible for emotions, memory and stress. For clients who arrive rushed or overwhelmed, this immediate pathway helps them settle and feel calmer within moments. Natural vs synthetic fragrance Synthetic fragrances may trigger memories, but they cannot regulate emotions or support the nervous system. Their chemical makeup can sometimes cause headaches or irritation. Natural essential oil blends are created from natural botanicals and interact with the emotional centres of the brain and regulates your nervous system responses. Some uplift (lime, orange), some relax (lavender, camomile) and others ground and balance (pine, fir). This is why natural scent can shift a client’s emotional state so quickly. The NeuroScent approach Founded by British psychologist and aromatherapist Olga Melita, NeuroScent blends neuroscience with pure botanicals to support emotional balance, resilience and clarity. The Tatler Beauty Awards 2025 Wellbeing Set, paired with the elegant waterless Mini Portable Diffuser, offers beauty professionals an easy way to bring calm into their practice and personal life. A simple shift, yet a transformative one – natural scent can turn your workspace into a sanctuary of emotional renewal.
