She is a mother who sees the world from the lens of many who work day-in-and-day-out to support their families and strive to make a difference in their own communities. In the world where political connections, credentials and titles are a privilege, Lorna is genuinely down-to-earth. She looks at the world, with all its challenges, as an opportunity to explore real possibilities and optimism for the future. Her work on the ground as a community advocate, for people of all ages and cultur-
al backgrounds, has also given her a real view of the world that is unpretentious – most common to people who silently thrive with their daily triumphs and struggles. She approaches community problems with common sense. She tackles peoples’ issues such as caregiving, food insecurity, health care inequalities, racial discrimination and the lack of job opportunities from the ground up. Actions speak louder than words. The question of ‘How can we help you?’ is always a primary concern to Lorna. This focus on others through her advocacies and actions has made Lorna an extraordinary worker for the community. Biden recognizes Fil-Ams’ ‘immense contributions to our country’ during start of Filipino American History Month by ChristinA M. Oriel AJPress
U.S. Democratic presidential nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden said that if elected, he would work alongside Filipino Americans “to protect the American people.” The presidential candidate’s promise came as October marks Filipino American History Month in the United States. “During Filipino American History Month, we celebrate the community’s immense contributions to our country — from early immigrants to the millions today, many who serve in the military or as frontline workers. As President, I’ll work alongside them to
protect the American people,” he said in a tweet on Thursday, October 1. In a longer statement posted on his campaign website, Biden said Fil-Ams “have enriched and strengthened every aspect of our country.” He also paid tribute to the “countless Filipino American essential frontline workers and caregivers” working during the pandemic as over 208,000 individuals have died from COVID-19. “And we offer our prayers to the families of Filipino American nurses, who represent 4% of nurses in the United States, but make up more than 30% of nursing deaths due to COVID-19.
