1 Dominant de toute sa hauteur la PLACE SOLVAY, le CENTRE DE COMMUNICATION NORD (CCN) englobe la GARE DU NORD actuelle. Edifié au lendemain de la deuxième guerre mondiale, il témoigne encore du monumentalisme des années trente. Difficile d’imaginer que se trouvait, ici, l’ancien faubourg de Cologne, un quartier commerçant et résidentiel qui s’était développé dès 1839 autour de la gare de Cologne, laquelle remplaçait celle de l’Allée verte. Dans l’euphorie des années 1960, germa l’idée de transformer les environs de la nouvelle gare du Nord en un quartier d’affaires à l’image du modèle américain : rêve d’un World Trade Center comprenant huit tours. C’est ainsi que le plan d’aménagement « Manhattan » a vu le jour ! Dos au CCN, se dressent trois tours portant les lettres WTC, elles seront finalement les seules réalisées dans le cadre de ce projet. Après cet échec urbanistique des années 60, ce quartier a connu une nouvelle dynamique dans les années 80. Des immeubles de bureaux abritant de grandes entreprises et des ministères furent construits le long de l’actuel boulevard Albert II.

1 In zijn volle hoogte uittorenend boven het SOLVAYPLEIN, omvat het COMMUNICATIE-CENTRUM NOORD HET huidige NOORDSTATION. Het gebouw van kort na de tweede wereldoorlog baadt nog in het triomfalisme van de jaren dertig. Moeilijk voor stellen dat zich hier de oude buitenwijk Keulen bevond, een handels en residentiële wijk, die zich ontwikkeld had rond het Keulenstation. Dat was in de plaats gekomen van het station van de Groendreef.

1 THE CENTRE DE COMMUNICATION NORD (CCN, north communication centre) dominates PLACE SOLVAY from its great height and includes the current GARE DU NORD. Built after the Second World War, it bears witness once again to the monumentalism of the 1930s. It’s difficult to imagine that the old working-class area of Cologne once stood here, a commercial and residential area that grew up around Gare de Cologne, the station that replaced the Allée Verte station, from 1839.

GAUCHERET, MIXITÉ ET RENAISSANCE D’UN QUARTIER

5 Sur la gauche, suivons l’avenue Ph. Thomas dont le tracé courbe rappelle la ligne de chemin de fer reliant Bruxelles à Malines dès 1835. Nous arrivons PLACE GAUCHERET, dont le nom fait référence à un grand propriétaire terrien du 18ème siècle. La création d’un nouveau parc le long de la rue Gaucheret est aujourd’hui un atout majeur pour la revitalisation du quartier. Arpentons cet espace vert : pour le plus grand bonheur des jeunes et moins jeunes, des sources d’eau, des rocailles, des espaces de jeu de balles et de belles pelouses agrémentent ce jardin urbain original. 6 Sans doute avez-vous déjà entendu parler de ce nouvel immeuble surgi au beau milieu du BOULEVARD ALBERT II et qui en ferme la perspective : LA TOUR ZÉNITH ! Allons la voir de plus près. De ses quatre-vingts mètres de haut, elle marque la transition entre le quartier d’affaires de l’Espace Nord, découvert en début de promenade et la zone résidentielle ancienne du quartier Gaucheret. Conçu par les architectes français M. Macary et L. Delamain, en collaboration avec le Belge José Vandevoorde, ce bâtiment translucide intègre des jardins suspendus qui constituent le prolongement visuel du jardin de Wirtz. Voici donc tout un quartier qui reprend vie grâce, notamment, à la mise sur pied du projet de l’espace Gaucheret initié depuis la fin des années 90 par la commune de Schaerbeek et le privé: bureaux, logements, commerces et crèches se développent dans huit nouveaux immeubles situés à l’arrière de la tour Zénith. 7 Un bâtiment relie le parc et la place et se laisse traverser. La MAISON DES CITOYENS est conçue comme une table dressée autour de laquelle échanges, rires et discussions peuvent trouver place. Pierre Hebbelinck a com-

In de euforische jaren 1960, rijpte de idee dat de buurt van het nieuwe Noordstation in een Amerikaans aandoende zakenwijk moest veranderen: een World Trade Center met 8 torengebouwen. Onder de naam “Manhattan” werd het plan van aanleg opgestart. Ruggelings tegen het CCN staan hier nu drie torens met de letters WTC. Het zijn de enige die gebouwd werden in het kader van het project. Lange tijd als een stedenbouwkundige mislukking beschouwd, deelt de wijk sinds de tachtiger jaren in een nieuwe dynamiek. Grote bureelgebouwen, waarin grote bedrijven en ministeries huizen, rijzen op langs de Albert II laan. 2 Daarmee meet de ALBERT II LAAN zich de allures aan van een moderne beeldengalerij. We bekijken ze liefst met de ogen van vandaag. Vóór de esplanade van het Solvayplein stelt de Roemeense kunstenares Tapta (1926-1997) een monumentaal geometrisch werk voor Open geest – Perspectieven en bedenkingen, dat zich weerspiegelt in een watervlak. We volgen het centrale pad naar rechts, richting GAUCHERETPLEIN. We ontdekken in deze landschapsruimte, ontworpen door Jacques Wirtz, nog andere beelden. Hier De boog van Pierre Culot, en enkele passen verder De kleur Noord van Pal Horvath. Evenveel scheppingen die er een kunstzinnige wandeling van maken die aanzet tot bezinning. 3 De ROGIERSTRAAT, aan onze rechterkant, steekt met zijn oude bebouwing schril af tegen gordijnwanden van de zakenwijk die we juist verlaten hebben. Op de hoek met de Vooruitgangsstraat zien we rechts de toren-metuurwerk van het Noord-station. Hij is een dagelijks ijkpunt voor de duizenden pendelaars en kan zijn Art Déco-afkomst niet verloochenen. 4 We lopen verder door de VOORUITGANGSTRAAT, waarvan een deel verloren ging tijdens de werken aan de Noord-Zuidverbinding. Een aantal mooie eclectische woningen hebben de tand des tijds weerstaan en herinneren aan de industriële activiteit van weleer. We kijken in het bijzonder naar de details in de gevels van de NR 291, 293 en 295.

GAUCHERET, INTERMINGLING AND REBIRTH OF AN AREA

In the euphoria of the 1960s, the idea of transforming the surroundings of the new Gare du Nord into a business district based on the US model came into being: a dream of a World Trade Center with eight towers. That was how the “Manhattan” development plan came to exist. Three towers backing onto the CCN bear the letters WTC; these would ultimately be the only ones built from the project. After this urban development failure of the 1960s, the area found a new dynamic in the 1980s. Office buildings housing major businesses and ministries were built along the current Boulevard Albert II. 2 BOULEVARD ALBERT II is a veritable gallery of sculpture and invites us to cast a contemporary eye over its features. In front of the esplanade of Place Solvay, the Romanian artist Tapta (1926-1997) created a monumental geometric work – «Esprit ouvert - Perspectives et Réflexions »(open mind – perspectives and reflections) – over a sheet of water that catches its reflection. We then follow the central path heading right in the direction of PLACE GAUCHERET. In this landscaped area designed by Jacques Wirtz, we discover other sculptures such as L’Arche (the arch) by Pierre Culot and, a little further on, La Couleur au Nord (colour in the north) by Pal Horvath: creations that make this a walking route for art and contemplation. 3 To our right, the older buildings of RUE ROGIER contrast with the curtain wall façades of the business district that we have just left behind. When you reach RUE DU PROGRÈS, glance to the right: the clock tower of the Gare du Nord, the daily milestone of thousands of commuters, has a resolutely Art Deco style. 4 We now walk down RUE DU PROGRÈS, which had its even-numbered side amputated by the works on the Nord-Midi rail connection. A few beautiful eclectic houses have survived and recall the industrial activity of the area. Note, in particular, the details on the façades of N°291, 293 and 295.

5 We nemen de Ph. Thomaslaan linksaf. Haar boogvormige aanleg herinnert aan het tracé van de eerste spoorwegverbinding Brussel-Mechelen in 1835. Wij komen aan op het GAUCHERETPLEIN, naam die verwijst naar een groot grondbezitter uit de 18de eeuw. De aanleg van een nieuw park langsheen de Gaucheretstraat speelt een hoofdrol in de heropleving van de wijk. Tot grote vreugde van de kinderen maken waterbronnen, rotspartijen, speelruimten en mooie grasperken een spetterend geheel van deze originele stadstuin.

5 On the left, we follow Avenue P. Thomas, whose curved trajectory recalls the railway line connecting Brussels with Malines, opened in 1835. We then come to PLACE GAUCHERET, whose name refers to a major 18th-century landowner. The development of a new park along Rue Gaucheret is now a key part of the revitalisation of the area. Looking over this green space, we see that springs, rockeries, ball game areas and beautiful lawns enhance this original urban garden for the enjoyment of young and old alike.

6 U hebt wellicht al gehoord van het nieuwe torengebouw dat oprijst in ’t midden van de ALBERT II LAAN en het perspectief afsluit: de ZENITH-TOREN. Laten we hem eens van naderbij bekijken. Met zijn tachtig meter hoogte, is het een verbindingsteken tussen de zakenwijk van de Noordruimte, die we bij het begin van de wandeling ontdekt hebben, en de oude residentiële Gaucheret-wijk. Het gebouw is ontworpen door de door de Franse architecten M. Macary en L. Delamain, in samenwerking met de Belg José Vandevoorde. Helemaal doorschijnend, sluit het hangende tuinen in, die de tuin van Wirtz visueel verlengen. Hier herleeft dus een volledige wijk, ondermeer door het op zijn poten zetten van de Gaucheret-ruimte door de gemeente Schaarbeek in samenspel met de privé. Burelen, woonruimten, handelszaken en kribben ontwikkelen zich in acht nieuwe gebouwen aan de achterkant van de Zenith-toren.

6 You have probably heard of the new building that has gone up right in the centre of BOULEVARD ALBERT II, closing up the prospect: the TOUR ZÉNITH (zenith tower)! Let’s look at it more closely. 80 m high, it marks the transition between the Espace Nord business district that we met at the start of the walk, and the old Gaucheret residential area. Designed by French architects M. Macary and L. Delamain, working with Belgian José Vandevoorde, this translucent building includes hanging gardens, which form a visual extension of the Wirtz garden. In short, this area is returning to life, thanks in large part to the Gaucheret area project that was initiated at the end of the 1990s by the district authority of Schaerbeek and private enterprise: offices, accommodation, shops and crèches have taken shape in eight new buildings behind the Tour Zénith.

2 Véritable galerie de sculptures, le BOULEVARD ALBERT II nous invite à poser un regard contemporain sur son aménagement. Devant l’esplanade de la place Solvay, l’artiste roumaine Tapta (1926-1997) propose une œuvre géométrique monumentale «Esprit ouvert - Perspectives et Réflexions » créée sur un plan d’eau qui en capte le reflet. Suivons le sentier central partant sur la droite en direction de la PLACE GAUCHERET. Dans cet espace paysager dessiné par Jacques Wirtz nous découvrons d’autres sculptures telles l’Arche de Pierre Culot et, quelques pas plus loin, La Couleur au Nord de Pal Horvath, autant de créations qui en font un lieu de promenade artistique et de contemplation.
